Troy Turner, owner of Clo-Dex Carpet Care, and his wife, Linda, have been in the carpet business for about a year now. Their company has already had about 100 jobs, but cleaning the Stuart Castle carpet has been their most interesting by far. "It's quite a place to go through and look at," Turner said. "It was a pretty neat opportunity, not that many people get a crazy opportunity like that." The Stuart Castle has been around since the 1904 World's Fair. The founder of Brown Shoe Co. built a house on the property that was used for a summer home. Around the 1950s, dermatologist Wallace Stuart bought the house and the surrounding acres from the owner. Wallace wanted to build a castle for his then-wife. After 10 years of construction on the house, she filed for divorce from the doctor. Now the castle is in foreclosure after another doctor bought it from Wallace. Mg Property Preservation Inc. in Troy, Ill., now manages the house. The company contacted Turner's carpet business in April to clean the carpet of the estimated 8,000-square-foot castle. "I can't imagine trying to heat and cool that place," Turner said. "It's massive, which is kind of why people are turned off by it." The castle sits on six acres, but when Wallace was the owner it comprised about 122 acres. Turner said the castle is far from being haunted, as many people believe, but it does have an unusual background. "Just the history and story is pretty cool," Turner said. "There are a lot secret passageways. I never could try to find out how to find my way to the garage." Because of other press publicity at the time about Turner's family-owned business cleaning the castle's carpet, Turner received a phone call from a widow who told him she usually did not let men come into her home.
