Retro Thing is a great blog. I found this nice little piece on the Silvertone guitars that once came right out the Sears catalog. A cool piece of vintage kit that had a humble start as a not so cool basic consumer axe. Many artist got their start with a Silvertone guitar. And not mentioned is Jack White who use that rare silver tone amps. There are some good links to other Silvertone links at the end of the Retro Thing article if you wish to learn more. The Silvertone amps sound great and the guitars look wonderful.

This is a cool little scope for DIY’ers form Seed Studio. It may not be mad scientist grade but for under fifty buck it is pretty cool. It has been sold out for a while but hopefully there will be more. There is a lot of other Arduino and Monome related stuff on the site also.

Dark Night of the Soul or Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and David Lynch

Dark Night of the Soul is a collaboration with some two the most interesting and strange music maker of today. Then throw in visuals from surrealist indie film maker David Lynch and the fact you can but the album in the old school physical copy way sans the music and you have quite a fascination. The music album is great and I can imagine adding the book of photos from Lynch that act as a visual accompaniment create quite an effect. The package only comes included with a blank CD-R due to legal issues with Danger Mouse and EMI. More copyright hell in this modern world.

You can however hear the whole wonderful album at NPR and read the article about it. It is worth a listen. It includes guest spots by James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils. And if you think NPR is just a lot of talk you are sadly mistaken. All Songs Considered is one of the best sources for great music you may not hear elsewhere just like Dark Night of the Soul. Even the during the news programs you’ll hear the best damn bumper music ever.
