The Convertibles: A Music Program -- Thursday, July 9th at 7pm

The Convertibles quartet will entertain you with music from the 1950s and 1960s, along with some barbershop songs! This concert event will be fun for patrons of all ages.

Armchair Travelers: Egypt -- Friday, July 10th at 1:30pm

Carl DiNello will take you on a trip to Egypt. Discover the sights and culture of this country through color photographs and personal experience. Light refreshments will be served.

Chick Lit Book Discussion -- Wednesday, July 15th at 7pm

Stop by to discuss The Other Woman by Jane green. Books are now available at the library for check out. New members are welcome!

You can read either The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins or Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher -- or you can read both! Both books are available on display at the library for you to check out. What is Grossology? -- Tuesday, July 14th from 10 to 11:30am

Grossology is the science of all things gross and vile! We'll talk about things that you're not allowed to talk about. Here is your chance! Warning: not for weak stomachs! This program is based on the Grossology books by Sylvia Branzei-Velasquez. For kids ages 8-12. Registration is required; to register, call (708) 301-7908.

Trivia Game Night -- Wednesday, July 15th at 7pm

Join us for a fun night of trivia at the Homer Library! Kids in grades 3 - 5 are invited to take part in the trivia game night. Kids in grades 6 and up are invited to trivia game night on Wednesday, July 22nd at 7pm.

Thursday Morning Family Movie -- Thursday, July 16th at 10am

Babysitting Class -- Saturday, July 18th from 9am to noon

Learn basic first aid, how to plan and prepare for babysitting jobs, change diapers and much more! For kids ages 10 and up. Registration at the circulation desk is required as space is limited, and there is a $20 fee per participant.

Used Book Sale -- Accepting Donations as of July 24th

The library will soon be accepting donations for our Used Book Sale! Due to space constraints, we are asking that patrons drop off donations on the following days only: Friday, July 24th through Wednesday, August 5th. We will be accepting gently used books, although we cannot take encyclopedias over 5 years old, items in poor condition, magazines, or textbooks. Thank you for your help in making this event a success!

The Used Book Sale begins with a Friends' Night pre-sale on Thursday, August 6th from 5-8pm for patrons who are Friends of the Homer Library (Not a friend of the Homer Library? Join today! Membership is just $5 for an individual or $7 for the whole family!). The sale will be open to the public on Friday August 7th from 8:30am-4:30pm, on Saturday, August 8th from 8:30am-3pm, and on Monday August 10th from 8:30am-8pm.

How to Get the Job You Really Want -- Wednesday, June 24th at 6:30pm (please note the revised time!)

This program, which begins at 6:30pm, covers all of the tools in a job hunter's kit from resumes and cover letters to negotiating compensation. Wendy Lalli, a former recruiter, career columnist for the Daily Southtown and current career coach, tells job searchers how they can direct their job efforts to get a position that not only fits their skills and experience, but also matches their personal goals and lifestyles.

It's a friendly group, and new members (in grade 6-8 as of Fall 2009) are always welcome. Members will receive volunteer hours for attending YAC meetings.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting -- Thursday, June 25th at 7pm

Teens in 9-12 grades are invited to join the library's new Teen Advisory Board! Members will have the opportunity to influence the Homer Library's teen services. TAB will meet once a month to discuss books, programming, and other library topics. Members will receive volunteer hours for attending TAB meetings. Fundraiser at Cold Stone Creamery

Looking for a way to celebrate the arrival of summer and benefit your local library at the same time? The Homer Township Public Library District is pairing up with Cold Stone Creamery for a fundraiser of yummy proportions! Grab a voucher, available at the Homer Library and by clicking here, and head on down to the Lockport location of Cold Stone Creamery (16527 W. 159th Street) on June 23, 24, and 25. Celebrity scoopers will be there to serve you from 4-7pm, and if you use a voucher at any time during business hours, the library will receive a portion of your purchase! All vouchers received on these days will be entered into a raffle in which customers can win a free Cold Stone cake or a $15 Cold Stone gift card. Our DVD Collection Is Here!
Patrons can now check out DVDs at the Homer Library! Look for our DVD collection in the front of the library in the new arrivals section. There is a limit of 5 DVDs per person, and the check out period is one week. There are no holds or renewals on DVDs owned by the Homer Library, and there is a late fee of $1 per day per DVD. We hope you enjoy our newest collection!

Summer Reading Program Kick-Off & Program Registration
The library's Summer Reading Program starts on June 15th! June 15th also marks the first day of registration for any summer programs. Also, the Bookmobile's Summer Reading Club runs from June 8th - July 29th, when readers will have the chance to win fun prizes! We hope to see you at the library or on the bookmobile this summer!

Summer Reading Program Kick-Off & Program Registration

The library's Summer Reading Program starts on June 15th! Stop by the library to meet Boomer, the mascot for the Windy City Thunderbolts, beginning at 9:30am. June 15th also marks the first day of registration for any summer programs. In-person registration begins at 8:30am, and telephone registration begins at 12pm. Also, the Bookmobile's Summer Reading Club runs from June 8th - July 29th, when readers will have the chance to win fun prizes! We hope to see you at the library or on the bookmobile this summer!

Brookfield Zoo Passes for Homer Library Patrons

Did you know that the Homer Library offers free Brookfield Zoo passes for check out? It's true! Zoo passes are given on a first come, first served basis, and cannot be reserved. We recommend you call the library to see if a pass is available (at 708-301-7908), as we have only 4 passes and they are in high demand during the summer months. Only Homer Library patrons ages 18 or older can check them out. With each pass, up to 8 people are entitled to a free general admission to Brookfield Zoo and the Hamill Family Play Zoo (this also includes free parking for up to 2 vehicles). Passes can be checked out for 3 days. An overdue fine of $5.00 per day will be charged to your account if it is returned late. When returning the zoo passes, please do not return them in the book drop. We hope you enjoy your time at the Brookfield Zoo!

Jean Drive: An Update!

We are happy to announce the the library's Jean Drive was a great success! Library patrons and staff donated a total of 140 pairs of jeans, all of which will be given to an area shelter. The Summer 2009 edition of the library newsletter is now available! Inside you will find information on all of our upcoming summer programming, including our summer reading program, bookmobile activities, and special events. Summer Reading Program Kick-Off & Program Registration
The library's Summer Reading Program starts on June 15th! Stop by the library to meet Boomer, the mascot for the Windy City Thunderbolts, beginning at 9:30am. June 15th also marks the first day of registration for any summer programs. Also, the Bookmobile's Summer Reading Club runs from June 8th - July 29th, when readers will have the chance to win fun prizes! We hope to see you at the library or on the bookmobile this summer!

Teen Intern Applications Still Being Accepted
Applications for this summer's Teen Intern Program are now available! You can pick one up at the library, or you can download one here! The program is open to teens who are entering 6th grade & up (as of Fall 2009). Shifts are usually limited to 1-3 hours per week, and volunteer space for each event is based on first come, first served (dates and times of each event are available on the application). The deadline for applications is June 1, 2009, and applicants will be notified of their schedule by June 8, 2009. There will be no orientation meetings this year, so please read the rules found on the application. We look forward to having you intern at the library this summer!

Teen Advisory Board
Teens in 9-12 grades are invited to join the library's new Teen Advisory Board! Members will have the opportunity to influence the Homer Library's teen services. TAB will meet once a month to discuss books, programming, and other library topics. Members will receive volunteer hours for attending TAB meetings. Summer TAB meetings will be held on Thursday, June 25th at 7pm and Thursday, July 23rd at 7pm.

Bookmobile Event: Celebrate National Children's Book Week

Visit the Bookmobile any time between May 11th and June 3rd to enter the bookmark contest! The contest is being held in celebration of National Children's Book Week. We hope to see you soon!

May 17th is the last Sunday that the library will be open until September! From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the library is closed on Sundays. But we will be open regular hours Monday through Saturday, except for holiday closures. Have a great summer!

Remembering Barry Levine, a beloved board member

Barry Levine, Homer Library Trustee, PALS trustee, and friend to many, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009.

Barry loved the library and was a wonderful supporter and advocate for books, reading, literacy and access for those with disabilities. He will be greatly missed by many people and organizations that he devoted his time and energy to. He was found with his earphones on listening to a book in his last moments. Barry would think that was a fine ending to a wonderful life.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, children, family and friends.

Presenter Alex Brooks will cover behavior-related issues including how to train an aggressive, timid, or overactive dog; basic commands; ending excessive barking; leash training; tips for purchasing a dog; the differences between pet shops; private breeders and shelter dogs; understanding your dogs; understanding your dog's body language; and how to introduce a new dog into the home or to an existing dog. No pets please!

Bookmobile Event: TLC Animal Shelter Donation Drive

In honor of National Be Kind to Animals Week, the Homer Library Bookmobile, in partnership with the TLC Animal Shelter, is holding a donation drive. TLC is in need of the following items: paper towels, postage stamps, foam floor squeegees, non-clumping kitty litter, money for veterinary services/utility bills/etc., and gift cards for Menards, Home Depot, or gas cards. Donations will be accepted on the Bookmobile from April 27th through May 27th. Thank you for your support!

The Homer Library is proud to offer our newest online program -- 10 Weeks to a Tech Savvy Parent! This program is a FREE online course for parents, adults, and other patrons interested in learning more about popular websites and Web 2.0 tools. This course will cover introductions to the various websites and tools, discuss how these websites and tools would be useful for both adults and children, and also promote Internet safety. Participants can read articles and watch tutorial videos on tools such as online communities, blogs, RSS aggregators, video sharing and more! 10 Weeks to a Tech Savvy Parent is hosted on Learnhub's website, a social networking site for teaching and learning. Author Visit: Suzanne Morgan Williams -- Thursday, May 7th from 4:30 - 6pm

Childrens author Suzanne Morgan Williams' latest book, Bull Rider, has been selected by the Junior Library Guild for their Spring 2009 collection. Join us as Ms. Williams discusses skateboarding, bull riding, and how a young boy copes with the return of a wounded brother from the war. During the program, participants will help create a Rodeo Mural and design their own Brand to be displayed in the library. This event would make a great Scout outing! Friday, May 1st is the first day patrons can sign up for the Microsoft Office 2007 computer classes being held in May. This seminar will teach the small business owner how to set up their company books on the computer using the accounting package QuickBooks. Topics covered will include how to set up a company file and an industry specific chart of accounts, along with the basics of how to perform accounts receivable and accounts payable functions within QuickBooks. Additional topics that will be covered include bank reconciliations and how to backup and store your data.
