Interested in saving money on your phone bill? CUB will show patrons how to save money by cutting out unused or unneeded telephone services. Patrons are encouraged to bring a recent phone bill.

Adult Book Discussion -- Wednesday, November 18th at 7:30pm

We'll be discussing Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult at November's meeting. This will be our last meeting of 2009, as we won't be meeting in December, but we look forward to more great discussions in 2010! Copies of January's book will be available at the library in mid-December.

Teen Drop-In Craft: Paper Bead Jewelry -- Tuesday, November 10th from 4-5:30pm
Teens in 6th grade and up are invited to drop in anytime between 4 and 5:30 to take part in the paper bead jewelry craft! Teens can makes their own beaded jewelry with paper, magazines, and/or newspapers.

Teen Advisory Board -- Thursday, November 12th at 7pm
Help the library plan upcoming library events for other teens! The Teen Advisory Board is open to high school students, and service hours are given for attending each meeting.

Youth Advisory Board Meeting -- Wednesday, November 18th at 4:30pm

The next YAC meeting is almost here! YAC members volunteer for events in the library and the larger community and have fun while doing so. It's a friendly group, and new members (in grade 5-8) are always welcome. Members will receive volunteer hours for attending YAC meetings.

Teen Manga Group -- Thursday, November 19th at 7pm

Love manga and anime? Join us as we plan for next month's cosplay party (to be held on Thursday, December 10th) and talk about any great manga we've recently read! For teens in 6th grade and up.

Kids Art Club -- Thursday, November 12th at 6pm
Learn fun facts about some of the world's greatest artists and use your imagination to create your own masterpiece to display in the library! For kids in 3rd to 6th grade. Space is limited and registration is required.

Starlight Story Time -- Monday, November 16th at 6:30pm

Enjoy a "starry" story, craft and a snack! For kids ages 4 - 7 only. Space is limited and registration is required.

Thanksgiving Craft -- Tuesday, Novmeber 17th at 4:30pm

As a reminder, the International Cheese program was rescheduled from November 17th to November 2nd due to the a scheduling conflict. November is Food For Fines Month!

From November 1st to 30th, Homer Library patrons can pay off library fines with food instead of cash! Bring in one non-perishable food item and we'll waive $1 off existing fines or returned overdues. Paying for late fees for InterLibrary Loan items and replacement fees of lost items is not included in this offer. Up to $20 in overdue fines will be waived for each donation from the following list of acceptable items:

+ 8 oz. or more can of fruits or vegetables
+ 6 oz. or more can of meat, fish, or poultry

+ 10.5 oz or more can of soup (no packaged soup or ramen, please)

+ 1 box pasta, rice, or dried beans

+ 12 oz. or more box of cereal

+ 8 oz. or more jar of peanut butter

Offer valid only during the month of November. Only non-perishable, undamaged, unexpired, and labeled items will be accepted. Additional donations are welcome. All donated food will be given to local food banks for distribution. Thank you for your support!

"Donate 1 DVD" Drive

As you have hopefully seen, the library's DVD collection, which was established in June, is steadily growing. With DVDs for every age group, the collection had been extremely popular! We are looking to expand the collection with the help of generous patrons like you! Do you have one (new or gently used) DVD to donate? Bring it in! We are currently accepting donations of all types of DVDs, from childrens movies to documentaries. With just a small donation of one DVD, you can help the Homer Library reach our goal of 100 DVD donations for the month of November! Thank you for your support!

Databases for Job Searching and Resume Building
Did you know that Homer Library patrons have access to databases that can assist those who are searching for a new job? The Learning Express Library database offers self paced tutorials on topics such as job searching skills, creating resume and cover letters, and interviewing. Users can also find career information and practice tests for a variety of occupations. The Coin Career Library database offers a simple resumer builder and information such as average Illinois salaries and occupational outlooks. To access these (and other!) library databases, click on the "Find It Online!" link located in the column on the left side of the library's home page, or just click here! Teen Read Week
October 18th marked the first day of Teen Read Week! Sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association, Teen Read Week has been encouraging teen reading since 1998. To celebrate, teens in grades 6-12 can check-out a YA book and then stop by the Reference Desk for a treat pack! Also this week, teens can attend the Teen Movie and Drop-In Craft (more information on both events is listed above). Teen Open House: An Update!
Our Teen Open House party, held to celebrate the library's official opening of the new teen area, was a great success! Teens filled the library all night to decorate cupcakes and cookies, to participate in or watch the grossness of Teen Food Fear Factor (although many teens made it to the final round, Clarke finished the "cat vomit" quicker than everyone else in order to win the competition!), to win prizes and eat pizza, and to rock out to the songs of local band Carnival Heist! Author Fair
The Homer Library is excited to announce that our 4th Annual Author Fair will be held at the library on Monday, October 19th from 7-9pm. Meet the people behind the stories! Throughout the night, local authors will give short talks discussing their books, writing methods, and/or publication process. All authors will have tables throughout the library, at which they will sell and sign their books and also answer questions from patrons. Interested in living a healthier lifestyle? Start by learning how to improve your diet with El Chef Michael Niksic's Healthy Eating presentation. This program covers a wide range of ideas and methods to improve your diet and eating habits in a reasonable and straightforward manner.

Mystery Book Club -- Monday, October 5th at 7pm
The Mystery Book Club will be discussing A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny. We are a welcoming, lively group, and mystery lovers are always welcome to join in on the fun! Books are available at the library for check-out the month before the meeting.

Most Haunted Locations of Illinois -- Monday, October 5th at 7pm
Chad Lewis, co-author of the Illinois Road Guide to Haunted Locations, will take you on a ghostly journey to some of the most haunted places in Illinois! From phantom creatures prowling the woods to graveyard apparitions located in your own backyard, no place in Illinois is without its own haunting. Registration preferred.

College Planning Workshop -- Tuesday, October 6th at 7pm
College Funding Strategies will host a free college planning workshop for parents of high school students who are looking at increased college tuition. This session concentrates on helping your high school student pick the right college while causing the least impact on your family's finances. Registration preferred.

Armchair Travelers: Thailand -- Friday, October 9th at 1:30pm
Explore the faces and places of Thailand with Bill Helmuth in this exciting program. Visit Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and more, stopping at Buddhist temples, flower markets, and exquisite palaces along the way. Light refreshments will be served.

Teen Open House -- Wednesday, September 30th from 5-8pm
The library's Teen Open House is quickly approaching! The event, for teens in 6th grade and up, will be held on Wednesday, September 30th from 5 - 8pm. Activities including raffles, gaming, and a photo scavenger hunt will be held throughout the night, so stay the whole night or drop-in at any time! We'll also be having a food fear factor contest (with a signed parental consent form/waiver) -- we encourage those with food allergies to take their allergies into consideration before choosing to participate, although if you decide to participate and have food allergies, please turn in your signed consent form/waiver by September 29th so that we may accommodate you. Hungry teens can decorate their own sweet treats from 5-6pm and indulge in pizza at 7pm while listening to the songs of local teen band Carnival Heist. Teen Book Discussion -- Tuesday, October 6th at 7pm
We'll be discussing The Compound by S.A. Bodeen at our next Teen Book Club meeting. With a nuclear bomb heading their way, Eli and his family retreat into an underground compound to live for 15 years. But as the years pass, Eli becomes suspicious of his father, which leads him to wonder: who has been sabotaging the compound, and what is really left outside in the real world? Books are available at the library, and new members are welcome! For teens in 6th grade and up.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting -- Thursday, October 8th at 7pm
Teens in grades 9-12 are invited to attend the library's Teen Advisory Board meetings! We'll be discussing ideas for upcoming programs and projects. Members will receive volunteer hours for attending TAB meetings.

Culture Club: Greece -- Saturday, October 10th from 10-12pm
Calling all kids in grades 2-5! Travel to faraway lands and explore foods and customs from other countries around the world. First stop: Greece! Banned Books Week
Banned Books Week, which runs from September 26th through October 3rd, is an annual event sponsored by the American Library Association. The Homer Library is highlighting BBW with a display of challenged and banned books from around the country. We are also handing out BBW bookmarks, while supplies last. So visit the display and "celebrate your right to read!" For more information on how area libraries (including the Homer Library!) are highlighting Banned Books Week, you can read this article in the Southtown Star.

Cooking @ Your Library / Fright Night @ Your Library

The Homer Library is hosting two series of adult and teen programming this Fall! The first series, Cooking @ Your Library, consists of four fantastic programs for foodies! El Chef Michael Niksic returns to the library for these events: Healthy Eating (September 29th), Chocolate Chocolate (October 14th), International Cheese (November 17th), and Jellies and Jams (December 8th). Each program begins at 7pm. Chef's Niksic's programs are both delicious and popular, so space is limited and registration for each program is required.

Our second series is entitled Fright Night @ Your Library! Learn about the Most Haunted Locations of Illinois (October 5th), uncover the mysteries of vampires in Vampire 101 (October 27th), and witness dramatic readings of Creepy Classics (October 29th)! Each program begins at 7pm. Registration for the Fright Night programs, which are open to adults and teens, is preferred! The library now subscribes to Reference USA, a database for researching business and residental information. Used Book Sale: Update!
The library's second annual Used Book Sale was a great success! We would like to thank those who donated books for helping make this event happen. New Database: Illinois Public Records

The library has added another database to our reference collection! We now offer access to Illinois Public Records provided by Record Information Services. Scroll through Chicagoland’s public records: real estate transactions, mortgages, foreclosures, and more. Keep an eye on housing values in the community and help safeguard your biggest investment - your home. Sort by name, city, zip code, and more. Record Information Services is a 17 year old data compiler of public records serving the Chicagoland area. This database is currently available for in-library use only, but we hope to soon provide off-site access to it as well. So feel free to log on to it the next time you're in the library!

Used Book Sale: Donations and Sale Hours

The library is now accepting donations for our Used Book Sale! Due to space constraints, we are asking that patrons drop off donations on the following days only: Friday, July 24th through Wednesday, August 5th. We will be accepting gently used books, although we cannot take encyclopedias over 5 years old, items in poor condition, magazines, or textbooks.

As for the sale itself, the public is invited to purchase paperbacks for 25 cents and hardcovers for 50 cents on Friday, August 7th from 9am - 4:30pm and Saturday, August 8th from 9am - 3pm. On Monday, August 10th from 9am - 8pm, patrons can fill a library bag for $5.00 ("green" bags are included in the cost.) On Tuesday, August 11th and Wednesday, August 12th from 9am - 8pm, items will be available at a special offer of buy 1 get 2 free!

Friends of the Homer Library are invited to a special Friends pre-sale on Thursday, August 6th from 5 - 8pm. Not a friend? It's easy to become one! Sign up at the circulation desk -- just show your library card! There is a $5 fee for an individual membership, or a $7 fee for a family membership. The Homer Library will be holding various teen craft workshops within the coming months and we are asking for patron donations of craft supplies! We will be using the following items: altoid tins, glue, magnets, beads/jewelry supplies, capri-suns/juice boxes, sewing supplies, empty CD cases, modpodge, inkpads, canvas and paint (for canvas). If you have any of these items and are willing to donate them to the library, please drop them off at any time. Thank you for your support of our teen programming!

Wendy Lalli, a former recruiter, career columnist for the Daily Southtown and current career coach, tells job searchers how they can direct their job efforts to get a position that not only fits their skills and experience, but also matches their personal goals and lifestyles.

Attention brides! Learn tips to avoid stress during wedding planning, secrets that brides should know, and other wedding planning ideas. Presenter Linda Zec is a wedding professional with over 20 years of experience in the wedding business.

Fundraiser at Cold Stone Creamery

Looking for a way to celebrate the arrival of summer and benefit your local library at the same time? The Homer Township Public Library District is pairing up with Cold Stone Creamery for a fundraiser of yummy proportions! Grab a voucher, available at the Homer Library and by clicking here, and head on down to the Lockport location of Cold Stone Creamery (16527 W. 159th Street) on June 23, 24, and 25. Celebrity scoopers will be there to serve you from 4-7pm, and if you use a voucher at any time during business hours, the library will receive a portion of your purchase! Our DVD Collection Is Here!
Patrons can now check out DVDs at the Homer Library! Look for our DVD collection in the front of the library in the new arrivals section. There is a limit of 5 DVDs per person, and the check out period is one week. There are no holds or renewals on DVDs owned by the Homer Library, and there is a late fee of $1 per day per DVD. We hope you enjoy our newest collection!

The library's Summer Reading Program starts on June 15th! June 15th also marks the first day of registration for any summer programs. Also, the Bookmobile's Summer Reading Club runs from June 8th - July 29th, when readers will have the chance to win fun prizes! We hope to see you at the library or on the bookmobile this summer!

Looking for Summer Fun?
The Homer Library has information on day trips, county fairs, and other local festivals! We also have several travel books to guide you on your summer vacations. Look for a special summer travel display across from the circulation desk!

Fundraiser at Cold Stone Creamery
Looking for a way to celebrate the arrival of summer and benefit your local library at the same time? The Homer Township Public Library District is pairing up with Cold Stone Creamery for a fundraiser of yummy proportions! Grab a voucher, available at the Homer Library and by clicking here, and head on down to the Lockport location of Cold Stone Creamery (16527 W. 159th Street) on June 23, 24, and 25. Celebrity scoopers will be there to serve you from 4-7pm, and if you use a voucher at any time during business hours, the library will receive a portion of your purchase! All vouchers received on these days will be entered into a raffle in which customers can win a free Cold Stone cake or a $15 Cold Stone gift card. Vouchers are valid at the Lockport Cold Stone Creamery only. For extra fun, visit the Homer Library’s Bookmobile, which will be at Cold Stone on Thursday, June 25 from 4-7pm. Mystery Book Club -- Monday, June 8th at 7pm

We'll be discussing two books this month: Whiskey Sour by J.A. Konrath and The Fifth Floor by Michael Harvey. Both books are available at the library for check out. New members are welcome!

Prairiesmoke Writers Group -- Wednesday, June 10th at 7pm
The monthly meeting of the library's writers group is still going strong! Stop by to discuss your work with other writers and have fun with some group writing assignments. New members are welcome! Writers of all levels are encouraged to attend. Registration is not required.

Armchair Travelers: Hawaii -- Friday, June 12th at 1:30pm
Frank Klicar will guide you on a tour of Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and Molokai. Visit beautiful beaches and legendary volcanos, and learn about the history and traditions of each island. Light refreshments will be served!

Chick Lit Book Discussion -- Tuesday, June 16th at 7pm

June's selection is Everyone is Beautiful by Katherine Center. Join us for fantastic discussion, new friends, and fun times!

Knitting Group -- Tuesday, June 16th at 7pm

Bring your yarns and needles and join the library's monthly knitting club! Meet other knitters and view each other's projects. The group meets on the third Tuesday of every month.

Beginning Birdwatching -- Wednesday, June 17th at 7pm

Interested in birdwatching? Attend this informative event lead by an impressive group of speakers: Bob Bryerton, Facility Coordinator of the Plum Creek Nature Center and Bill and Denise Allaway, owners of Wild Birds Unlimited. This program is emceed by Leo Bigus, Nature and Wildlife Columnist for the Homer Horizon.

Teen Manga Group -- Thursday, June 11th at 7pm
We'll be having an art show, so bring your favorite manga-inspired artwork to show off to the rest of the group! Not an artist? Come anyway and enjoy the work of your friends! Open to teens in 6th grade & up.

Teen Movie Night -- Thursday, June 18th at 7pm

Get Wild In the Wilderness -- Wednesday, June 10th from 10am to Noon at Culver Park
Join Girl Scout Troop 515 and the Homer Library's bookmobile staff for some exciting outdoor games, storytelling, and crafts at Culver Park! Registration is recommended for this free event. Call (708) 301-7908 to register.

Touch a Truck Day -- Friday, June 12th from 10:30 to 2:30pm at Dellwood Park
Come to Dellwood Park in Lockport (Woods Dr. & IL Route 171) and visit the Bookmobile along with lots of other large vehicles! Make sure to stop & say hi to our awesome bookmobile staff!

Build Your Own Sundae -- Tuesday, June 16th from 11:30 to Noon OR 12:30 - 1pm

Build your own ice cream sundae with creamy vanilla or chocolate ice cream and choice of fabulous toppings! This sweet program is for kids ages 6-9. Registration is required, and the first day of registration is on Monday, June 15th (for more information on program registration, please see "More Info" below).

Father's Day Craft -- Tuesday, June 16th at 4:30pm

Surprise your dad with a handmade picture frame for Father's Day! Children 6 and under require adult help. There is a $3 fee per child.

Thursday Morning Family Movie -- Thursday, June 18th at 10am
