28th Annual Alamo Music and Wine Festival - Sept 11, 2010, Fun Things to Do in Alamo CA

The 28^th Annual Alamo Music and Wine Festival, hosted by the Alamo Rotary, is a community celebration that is one of the fun things to do in Alamo CA and it benefits the Alamo community and our schools' music programs while providing a variety of activities for the entire family. This 28^th annual Alamo Music and Wine Festival will be held 1-11 pm Saturday, September 11^th at the Alamo Plaza.

Headlining this event will be the "Fabulous Cruise Tones", who will feature music from the late '50s up to the hits of today for dancing under the stars beginning at 8:00 pm. Another popular Bay Area band, "Slim Chance" will play at 4pm. In addition, local music groups will perform starting at 1:00pm. The day will be filled with activities for the entire family. Food, games and local business booths will be set up throughout the festival area. Activities for the kids starting at 1pm will include Wheel of Fortune, ring toss, rock climbing wall, Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero and inflatable jump houses.

Dinner tickets are a modest $12.00 per person and will be good for selections from Forli's, Faz, Maggieray's and Don Jose's. Dinner will be served from 5:30 until 8pmThe Alamo Rotary is also offering hot dogs, burgers and chips at affordable prices.

The wine and beer both will be open throughout the Festival and will feature wines from Cline Cellars and Jacuzzi Family Vineyard. Commemorative wine glasses will be available for purchase at the event with your first glass of wine.

Alamo Rotary Club will donate proceeds to local school programs and community charities including the music programs at these local schools.

Alamo's Citizen of the Year will be presented at 7:15pm, followed by the drawing for Raffle prizes. Raffle tickets are $5 each, or five tickets for $20 and can be purchased from any Alamo Rotary member prior to the festival or purchased during the festival. You do not need to be present to win. Title Companies in CA MUST charge a filed rate with the State of CA or RISK SEVERE Penalties.

Title insurance rates are often questions. Scott Hoen of First American does a great job of explaining the oversight at the state level in this post. I know that I often use the CA ALTA Title Wizard to see the quoted rates from several companies and even recommend to clients that they do so as well.

Via Scott Hoen, ePro, MBA (First American Title Company):

Many times I discover that the news media recommends to consumers to seek out title insurance and escrow discounts but they can not be legally offered by a Title Company in operating in the State of California. Rates are different based upon the title policies offered and based upon what the Title Company files with the State of California

Title Insurance Companies operating in California MUST charge clients an escrow rate and title rate that is filed with the State of California. There is NO discounting allowed or the Title Representative and/or Company is at risk to be fined or lose their license. In this case a Title Company in San Diego settled with the CA Department of Insurance.

A press release was issued on August 30, 2010 by Commissioner Poizner Announcing a Settlement with Corinthian Title Company

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner today announced that he has reached an agreement with an underwritten title company to resolve an enforcement action taken against the company by the Department of Insurance. Corinthian Title Company, Inc., licensed to transact title business in San Diego county, allegedly failed to file escrow rates between October 2008 and November 2009 despite the fact it solicited and provided escrow services during that time; failed to comply with its underwriter's filed rates, resulting in overcharges and undercharges; and gave discounts on lender title insurance policies in residential refinance transactions that did not meet qualification criteria for those discounts, resulting in undercharges alleged as illegal rebates to induce the referral of business.

In his press release, Commission Poizner said, "I refuse to allow title companies to break the law through illegal rebating or through overcharging consumers". "It is mandatory that companies file their schedule of rates prior to charging those rates and the rates they file with the Department are the rates they are required to charge consumers - no more and no less. I will continue to make sure that consumers are treated fairly, and that title insurance companies are not driving up costs in the system through illegal rebating and other schemes."

This settlement with Corinthian includes a $100,000 monetary penalty, plus a $10,000 reimbursement of legal fees and costs to the Department of Insurance. The settlement also includes an agreement by Corinthian Title to cease and desist from failing to file rates and to cease and desist from failing to conform to filed rates. Additionally, the company agreed to cease and desist from engaging in illegal rebate conduct.

Check out your favorite Title Insurance Company -- most of the time they have a title rate calculator on their website so you can compare pricing but realize that they have to charge what is posted and filed with the State of California and discounting simply NOT ALLOWED.
