Volunteer Opportunities

The Catholic Mission in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belize, Central America opened its John Paul II Jr. College in August 2013. The Jr. College has offered associate degrees in Liberal Arts, English, and Business.

The Mission has staffed its high school, now open for over 20 years, with generous volunteers from the U.S., Canada and other countries. Volunteers have made the opening and the running of the high school possible. Once staffed with 100% volunteers, the high school is now run with about 3/4 paid Belizean staff and about 1/4 volunteers staff and serving close to 500 students per year. Over 300 hundred volunteers have served at the high school over the past 20 years. Most will tell you they were some of the best years of their lives.

The Mission is now looking for a few adventurous volunteers who would like to dedicate a year or two of their lives in the exciting project of teaching at this brand new college. They will begin small with between 25 and 30 students the first year, (i.e. 1 class). All students are to be required to take their liberal arts core, for which they have mainly volunteer teachers. Few specialization classes will be offered the first year.

They will be filling positions to teach the following courses in the coming (2014-2015) school year:

- Latin
- Theology
- Philosophy
- Trivium
- Humanities

Requirements are:
·         Must have at least a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, theology, philosophy, history, or English.
·         Must be willing to work in missionary conditions, i.e. eat local foods, live without air conditioning, live in simple housing, etc.
·         Must have a zeal for serving and a desire to help young people bring about a deep synthesis of Faith and Reason.
·         Should be practicing Catholic (nominal Catholics need not apply), and willing to live an exemplary life in and out of the classroom. Non-Catholics will be considered as well, but all teachers must be willing take an oath of fidelity in which they promise to teach nothing contrary to the official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
·         Must have a flexible personality and ability to adapt to circumstances.

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
Several members of the Ohio Senate have filed a poorly-designed bill that would put social workers in charge of deciding whether children can be homeschooled in Ohio.
Senate Bill (SB) 248 was introduced on December 3, 2013, and would require children’s services to review all homeschool notices to determine whether homeschooling is “in the best interest of the child.” Under this proposed legislation, children’s services would be required to meet with parents who choose to homeschool and conduct separate in-person interviews with each of their children. Children’s services would then make a recommendation for or against the excuse from compulsory school attendance.
Children’s services would have to recommend against homeschooling if they determine it is not in the child’s “best interest” or if the family has any record of a child welfare investigation, regardless of the result of that investigation. If there is a recommendation against homeschooling, the superintendent would be ordered to delay excusing the children for homeschooling until the family participates in a CPS parenting “intervention.”
This bill is breathtaking in its attempt to impose unreasonable government intrusion on Ohio families. In responding to this ill-advised legislation, however, it is important to keep in mind the background that has led to this bill.

Background

The bill is being called “Teddy’s Law.” It was drafted as a way to respond to the death of 14-year-old Teddy Foltz-Tedesco in January 2013. News reports indicate that Teddy had been abused for years by his mother’s boyfriend, Zaryl Bush. After teachers reported abuse to authorities, Teddy’s mother withdrew him from public school, allegedly to homeschool him. Reports tell a sad story of a broken home where neighbors, friends, family, police, teachers and others knew Teddy was being abused for years. Finally, Bush beat Teddy so severely that he later died of his injuries. Both Bush and Teddy’s mother are now in prison. A news report can be found online.
HSLDA condemns child abuse and is saddened by Teddy’s death. (Visit HSLDA’s website for more information on responding to child abuse.) HSLDA supports the prosecution of child abusers like Bush and the improvement of systems that prevent child abuse. However, SB248 does not actually address the problems that led to Teddy’s death.
Teddy Foltz-Tedesco died because those responsible for protecting him did not step in as the law or common sense would have dictated. Why? Although news reports indicate that abuse had been reported for years prior to Teddy’s death, it does not appear that any serious intervention was made by government authorities charged with investigating such allegations. Why was not enough done to protect Teddy from known abuse?
Even if, as SB 248 would require, his mother had sought social service’s approval to homeschool and was denied, he still would have been at home subject to abuse after school. Regardless of where he went to school, Teddy was left by authorities in a home where they knew abuse was occurring.
SB 248 would not have saved Teddy.
Furthermore, SB 248 turns fundamental American values upside down. The United States Supreme Court has recognized that parents generally act in the best interests of their children (Parham v. JR). In Pierce v. Society of Sisters, the Court ruled that parents have a fundamental right to direct the education of their children. SB248 replaces parents with unqualified social workers to make educational decisions for children.
What happened to Teddy Foltz-Tedesco is a tragedy that could have been prevented. The system may need reform, but Senate Bill 248 is a step in the wrong direction.

Action Requested

Please contact the bill sponsors to ask them to withdraw Senate Bill 248. You can give them some or all of the following messages in your own words:

I am calling to urge you to withdraw Senate Bill 248. Instead of solving the problems that led to Tedd’s death, this bill violates fundamental American values—including parents’ fundamental right to direct their children’s education without unwarranted government interference, and citizens’ right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Requiring government agents to investigate parents and children before homeschooling is allowed violates both of these fundamental principles of freedom. Such a process in no way solves the problem that led to Teddy’s tragic death—rather the bill merely serves as a smokescreen more likely to obstruct a clear view of what happened to Teddy.
Teddy Foltz-Tedesco died because people responsible for protecting him—family members, neighbors, police, and child services workers—failed to do what they should have done as already provided under the law. These people already knew that Teddy was being abused for years—why wasn’t something done? This question should be answered. Instead of imposing onerous burdens on innocent parents, someone should be trying to investigate why Teddy was not removed from such an abusive situation known to so many. You should look at changing children’s services policies and procedures that require scarce human resources to follow up on virtually every anonymous tip and even on silly allegations. When this happens resources aren’t available to protect children who need and deserve them—children like Teddy.
As a practical matter, if properly followed, current laws already provide sufficient authority for the government to investigate and intervene in cases of abuse. And the current legal structure for homeschool families whereby local school districts are notified and families demonstrate annual academic progress has worked well for nearly 25 years. Parents should not have to jump over the hurdles that SB 248 would create to remove their children from bad situations in traditional schools, such as abuse, bullying, or inadequate education.
Furthermore, children’s services employees are just not equipped or qualified to decide where children go to school. Is the Ohio legislature going to authorize hiring the hundreds of new “homeschooling agents” required under this bill? Or will you just tolerate the further stretching of resources so that more children like Teddy do not receive the attention they deserve?
This bill is poorly designed, does not solve the problem, unduly burdens innocent families, and prevents parents from making decisions that are in the best interest of their children. Please withdraw Senate Bill 248 and focus your reform efforts in a way that will actually solve the problem rather than violating the rights of fit parents.

Purpose

The Director of Development at St. Philip Neri Catholic Newman Center is to educate, inspire and inform parents, alumni, faculty, staff and members of the community about the mission of the Newman Center. The Director of Development is in charge of the day-to-day working of the Newman Center when Chaplain is not present.

Goal

15-20 donor visits a month;
Maintain/oversee automated record keeping, database and accounting procedures on Raiser’s Edge for fundraising and communication with approximate donor base of 5000;
Develop, manage and implement (in collaboration with the Chaplain) all aspects of capital campaigns; identification, cultivation, and solicitation of individual, corporate and foundation contributions; cultivate and directly solicit key donors, working with the Chaplain, Advisory Board and other key volunteers, as appropriate;
Develop annual fundraising plan in collaboration with the Chaplain and other key volunteers including specific short and long-term objectives and programs and action strategies to achieve objectives for presentation to the Advisory Board;
Manage Newman Center in a fiscally sound manner by ensuring the appropriate systems, policies and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals and Newman expenditures;
Promote good relationship between the Newman Center and donors by preparation and/or management of all direct mail letters, case statements, grants, brochures, newsletters, websites and sponsorship proposals required to support fundraising efforts;
Make personal calls and visits and coordinates meetings involving Chaplain, key volunteers and Board members for fundraising purposes; monitors results of fundraising efforts and prepares reports and analyses for Chaplain and Board;
Promote public relations and fundraising effectiveness by assisting with the communication of the Newman Center’s mission and goals, participating in the community and civic organizations and activities, and initiating and participating in various projects and activities aimed at achieving funding objectives;
Promotes and coordinates alumni and volunteer efforts toward enrichment of the Endowment Fund;
Promotes Board participation by coordinating committee work for Board involvement;

Translator Needed

There are unfinished French translation projects left them in this state due to more pressing publishing interests by the translator. These are important works by a renowned Thomist, and someone is needed who is at least as skilled as the translator in French translation to help him complete and edit them. He is happy to share the publication credit equally with whomever is willing to help, even in cases where he has done more than half the work.

Saint Cecilia Classical Productions Inc. is conducting a nationwide talent search for traditional Catholic young ladies of exceptional music ability in the areas of classical voice (alto or soprano), string or wind instruments (piano, violin, harp, guitar, etc.) They are interested in graduating seniors or recent graduates. Individuals who were home-schooled for their pre-college education or were raised in the Tridentine Mass tradition are also encouraged to apply. Students who have not yet graduated may participate in our program through the summer months. While not a requirement, acting, dance, Music Theater, choir, public speaking or pro-life counseling experience would be an additional plus. Some knowledge of Latin would also be helpful.

Their main base of operations will be the Akron-Canton area of northeast Ohio, with some limited travel within the state being required. While, technically, this is an all-volunteer ministry, some compensation will be provided each performer on a per concert or event basis. All of our concerts are done on a “free will offering” basis, with all net proceeds going to the performers. Additionally, all expenses for travel, lodging & meals will be paid. This is a great opportunity to learn more about one’s own faith, while evangelizing our Catholic population, and bringing them the pro-life message. Central America

The Catholic Mission in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belize, Central America will be opening its John Paul II Jr. College in August 2013. The first year the Jr. College will offer associate degrees in Liberal Arts, English, Business, and Primary Education.
The Mission has staffed its high school, now open for over 20 years, with generous volunteers from the U.S., Canada and other countries. Volunteers have made the opening and the running of the high school possible. Once staffed with 100% volunteers, the high school is now run with about 3/4 paid Belizean staff and about 1/4 volunteers staff and serving close to 500 students per year. Over 300 hundred volunteers have served at the high school over the past 20 years. Most will tell you they were some of the best years of their lives.
They are now looking for a few adventurous volunteers who would like to dedicate a year or two of their lives in the exciting project of opening a new college. They will begin small with between 25 and 50 students the first year, that is, 1 or 2 classes. All students will be required to take their liberal arts core. Few specialization classes will be offered the first year.

Exciting Teaching Opportunity

Northridge School is a Catholic all-boys bicultural school located in Mexico City, and is partner schools with Northridge Prep in Chicago and the Heights in Potomac, Maryland. They currently have classes of grades 1st - 6th, and next year they will begin their middle school with the addition of a 7th grade. There are plans to add one grade a year through high school. He works now as a professor at the ITAM--the leading financial university in Latin America.

I am writing you from Mexico City at the request of my friend Tony Janeiro, whom you know. My name is Brad McBride, I am a professor of Business and Finance at a university in Mexico City, ITAM (Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México). Tony mentioned that you are considering teaching at Northridge School here but have some reservations about the issue of crime and insecurity in this city and country. Tony asked me to give you a frank appraisal of how I see it being an American and resident in Mexico for the past 24 years. I believe that currently, Mexico City is (ironically) safer, much safer, than the northern regions of the country. What many Americans do not understand is that the narcoviolence plaguing Mexico is generally concentrated in the northern states, such as Chihuahua (especially Ciudad Juárez), Nuevo León (around Monterrey), Tamaulipas (south of Brownsville, Texas), and secondly, in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa, and maybe somewhat in Michoacán. But truthfully, and this is not "chamber of commerce" style propaganda, Mexico City is a better place to live than ever. It reminds me of Dickens' words in "Tale of Two Cities": "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Mexico City has improved due to better air quality (with the introduction of unleaded gasoline at Pemex stations), with the increase in real estate values causing factories to move out of the immediate city to places beyond the valley on the other side of the mountains, meaning there is less air pollution, and by the introduction of one day per week without a car programs, here known as "Hoy no circula".

The crime rate is perhaps a little better (lower) than it was before, but it is definitely not worse. Many foreigners have come to live here and certain neighborhoods such as la Condesa, la Roma Norte, Santa María la Ribera and others have become fashionable places for young creative types, sort of like on the North Side of Chicago or the Upper West Side of Manhattan, etc. I find this city to be an endlessly fascinating place and if one uses one's wits, one will not get in trouble. Don't get in an unlicensed "gypsy cab" but use a "taxi de sitio", don´t wander through unsafe neighborhoods at night. Don't dress ostentatiously with Rolex watches, etc. and other fancy adornments. Don't drive a Mercedes Benz or Hummer through the streets of the city, as that calls attention. But if you live modestly, you will most likely be all right.

Meanwhile, this city offers the greatest of offerings of restaurants (food from all over the world, not just tacos and enchiladas), movies (foreign films from all over the world at the Cineteca Nacional), concerts, music, orchestras, symphonies, bookstores, magnificent parks (the Parque México in la colonia Hipódromo Condesa neighborhood is stunningly beautiful), museums (el Museo Nacional de Antropología, el museo histórico del Castillo de Chapultepec, el Museo de Bellas Artes, el Palacio Nacional, etc., etc., etc. there are too many to mention in full.) This city is also a major financial center for Latin America, and if you wish to learn about finance in emerging markets, it is a great place for that. The social life is grand, there are many friendly people here, and many of them sit out at restaurants on the sidewalks until the late hours of the evening socializing. All of this which I greatly enjoy makes it difficult for me to ever think about leaving, so most likely I will be here until I retire in the distant future, primero Dios, as they say in this country.

Meanwhile, this city offers the greatest of offerings of restaurants (food from all over the world, not just tacos and enchiladas), movies (foreign films from all over the world at the Cineteca Nacional), concerts, music, orchestras, symphonies, bookstores, magnificent parks (the Parque México in la colonia Hipódromo Condesa neighborhood is stunningly beautiful), museums (el Museo Nacional de Antropología, el museo histórico del Castillo de Chapultepec, el Museo de Bellas Artes, el Palacio Nacional, etc., etc., etc. there are too many to mention in full.) This city is also a major financial center for Latin America, and if you wish to learn about finance in emerging markets, it is a great place for that. The social life is grand, there are many friendly people here, and many of them sit out at restaurants on the sidewalks until the late hours of the evening socializing. All of this which I greatly enjoy makes it difficult for me to ever think about leaving, so most likely I will be here until I retire in the distant future, primero Dios, as they say in this country.

Summer teaching positions with the Institute offer the opportunity to:

- Earn more than $6,000 during the summer. Teachers typically earn between $500 and $700 per week while teaching.
- Gain over 500 hours of teacher-training and teaching experience with a variety of age groups.
- Help students of all ages develop their reading skills and ability to become imaginatively absorbed in books.

The Institute is an educational service provider that teaches developmental reading programs in partnership with the continuing education departments of more than 100 colleges and universities across the United States. Our classes for students of all ages improve their reading skills and teach them to experience absorption in literature.
