As our school year is coming to a close, apparently so is our kids’ computer. I now have a BIG gripe about the Switched on Schoolhouse curriculum. All of a sudden, the SOS system had a glitch and we lost one-third of the work the kids have completed this year. YUCK!! The computer was partly to blame since it is on its way to the local trash heap as soon as we can replace it. I was foolish in relying on the computer to keep the records for me. I should have printed them out on a weekly basis to stick in my records book. Lesson learned the hard way! At least we saved a good portion of the lessons through the back-ups! Make your kids do a daily back-up of their lessons and be sure to print out the finished lessons grade at the end of each week for your records. Other than that, the curricula was fairly good. I did not have to be as involved in the teaching process which was really helpful for us this year.

How many of you out there suffer from something called Mother’s Guilt? You know it. The kind that gets you when you are at the dentist’s office and you are told your child has a cavity. It is like you have been slapped in the face. You truly take it to heart! You feel so guilty, like someone is telling you that you are a bad mother for allowing your child to get a cavity. So many of us can get wrapped up in this, especially those of us who homeschool. When we see our child struggling with learning, we tend to take that to heart and blame ourselves for our child’s struggles. Pray, relax and breathe! As a child grows older, we have to allow them to become themselves too! (They just might be the adult who has to have false teeth. We will still love them!)

This is so true with children with special needs. We have a tendency to place our own expectations onto the child. This can have direr circumstances often leading to a stifling of the child’s true abilities and an increase level of frustration for all parties involved. We all need to learn to separate our guilt from the equation when a child does not meet our expectations. I struggle with this too! There are things my child will excell in and things my child will not and that is okay! Don’t get me wrong! I still have very high expectations for my children. I just try and not come down hard on myself when it seems they will not have success in the task at hand. It just might be who they are! My children continue to surprise me and blow me away with what they have overcome! So, today work on getting rid of your Mother’s Guilt. Our children will be what the Lord needs them to be in order for His Glory to be done! Pray, relax and breathe!

This is an absolutely free web site. It features tons and tons of streaming and downloadable videos and resources. These videos are videos you may have seen on PBS or even discovery channel. There is also access to curriculum standards, blackline masters, and teachers guides for all ages and grade levels.

All you have to do is request a pass code; send an email with your name, homeschool name, address, childrens ages and your accountability association’s name and address.

Don’t miss out on this very valuable and yes FREE FREE FREE resource.

We have been using it for this past month for our science. The access to so many videos has opened the door to “virtual field trips”, and supplemented our weather unit with visual aids. My daughter has enjoyed the full access to the videos “The Magic School Bus”.

As we have had our ups and downs with switching over to the Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum, I have to say that I have enjoyed their science curriculum. Within the program, are great science experiements. If you do not have the supplies to actually complete the experiment, there are videos included so the kids can watch the experiment and learn from it. Well, I just purchased a science kit from Home Science Tools just for Switched-On Science. It is great. Very complete kit! Everything has been easy enough for me to follow and I was impressed with the cost. So, if you are using the science curriculum, I highly recommend purchasing the accompanying kit from www.homescience tools.com.

I am unaware of how many of you watch American Idol and saw Tuesday night’s episode with the young lady who misspoke so many of her words. I laughed out loud so hard while watching her state that she sang from the wrong rectum. It was priceless. I was able to use it as an awesome example to my children of what an uneducated adult can sound like. Anyway, my son is a wonderful reader and his vocabulary grows weekly as a result of this. He often times uses a ‘big’ word in a sentence in the wrong way, but I praise him for at least trying to use these words. It is the start of a great foundation in my book. Today, though, he completely created a new word on me. It so reminded me of the young lady from American Idol. He missed only one problem on his math test. As I handed him his test paper back, he through out an “aw man, I knew I mutilplicated that problem wrong!” (We haven’t stopped picking on him about it yet…)

Hi All!

I hope your holidays were all bright and cheery. Ours had lots of ups and downs, including an illness that had me down for the count for 2 weeks. We are all better now and are looking forward to the new year. As I began preparing for the upcoming semester, I wanted to be able to give my kids some extra work on the areas they are weak. After much research, I think I have found exactly what I was looking for at www.worksheetlibrary.com. The cost is $29.95 a year, but well worth it. The worksheets are broken down by grade and subject. Within each grade, they also list the subjects and items that each grade is suppose to have learned by the end-of-the-year. This is a great way to doublecheck what you currently are working on in your homeschool. I have been very pleased with the selection and have even come across a few sheets that contain lessons we have not learned yet. Check them out. If you get on their mailing list, they will send you some free downloads from time to time so you can see if the worksheets would be right for you.

I know the recent election has caused many of us to pause. We have some very interesting days ahead of us. With a new President who supports so many things we oppose, who knows how our lives are going to change. We are going to have to fight harder for our right homeschool, I believe. In my devo this morning, I came across this scripture: “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you” (Isaiah 54:10 NIV).

Thank-you Lord for that wonderful reminder this morning that no matter what happens in life, you Love Me. Our mountains are about to be shaken and the hills removed, but God will be right there beside us all - loving us! We will submit to the new authority God has placed above us on this earth and we need to pray for Obama and his soul and his governing of this country. In another email I received this morning, someone so wonderfully put this that I just had to share with you all:

Our GOD is a GOD of peace. I will rest in HIM even in the face of what seems to be defeat. The people wanted a king and they got the king. (1 Samuel 8:6-21) GOD sees our hearts and HE knows who are faithful. Our greatest chance to shine is in the darkness. I do not believe it will be easy, but my Redeemer lives. My heart is heavy, but I will continue to praise HIM. Our GOD is an awesome GOD!!!!

Bless you all!

Boy, have I caught some slack from letting my children (soon to be 12 and 13) go through their first haunted house. Yes, parts of it scared them to death and they were down so far in the wagon that I literally thought they had become part of the wagon. No, they did not like any of it and both vow never to go again. But despite all my warnings, they really, really wanted to go and would not let up about it. So, I came up with what I thought was a God-given idea. I took them through their first haunted house. While my kids hated it, I must admit that I personally have not laughed like that in a while. Let me tell you how I turned this into an AWESOME teaching moment that neither child will soon forget!

1) I asked both kids if they enjoyed the haunted hayride. Of course, they shook their sad little faces and said no. Then I asked if they were better for it after going through it. Again, they said no. Finally, I asked them if it changed them in anyway. They said yes and told me that they were going to be afraid and needed to sleep with me when they got home and all kind of things.

2) I explained to my children that this is what things of this world can be like, i.e. premarital sex, drugs, and alcohol. They will look fun and wonderful from the outside, but after you have gone through them you will not be better for it and in some cases, you will be changed in a way that you do not like. Sometimes, they can even cause you great fear. I totally got to explain to them that this is what the bible means to be in the world but not part of the world.

3) Plus, I got to put in the plug that your parents really do know what we are talking about and maybe next time when I tell them that they will not like it they will be a bit more likely to listen to me.

4) My kids have already joked that when they are going to go out with their friends at age 16, that mom will say “Remember the Haunted House” and they will know exactly what I mean. I pray that is true!

5) I also got in a huge lesson on fear. They know what it is like now and exactly how things of this world can make them feel. The bible tells us to fear nothing but He who can send us to death. My kids have a more complete understanding of this now. They came through their experience and knew they were safe and protected.

6) This would not have worked if I had waited till they were 16 and had the realization that the haunted house was really a big joke. I am sure we will have plenty of teaching moments with this one as they get older. I already have tucked away some of them to use for later. When we discuss sex in more complete detail when they are older, I can say that having premarital sex and having to wait and see if you are pregnant is going to make your body fear like it did in the haunted house. Also, going to a party where there is under-aged drinking and the party gets busted is also going to make you feel the fear you felt in the haunted house. It is not worth it. The list goes on and on and on.

So, you may not take your kids to a haunted house. I did and I used it to my advantage. The things of this world can harm us and I wanted my children to really learn this! It is not something either one of them are soon to forget!

My daughter just finished reading her 3rd novel from cover to cover and actually remembered what she read! Praise God! It just made me cry. We have struggled so long! Way to go! I attribute a lot of her success to the wonderful teachers at Learning RX! Both kids have been in their program for about 4 months now and I can see the differences. Even my son is able to SIT and complete most of his work now. SIT and work. Never thought it would ever happen. This program really works. It is provides cognitive skills training that empowers anyone of any age to learn faster and easier. Tutoring and other programs reinforce WHAT students must learn (information). LearningRx learning centers identify and strengthen the skills behind HOW students learn. They provide testing and life-changing training for students of all ages who desire to learn and read better for life. I highly recommend them. We have gone to the one located in Mt. Pleasant, SC. If you call, ask for Julie Chase and tell her I sent you. Email me if you would like more info!

Please pray for my brother and sister-in-love, Kevin and Elysa. Kevin’s mom went home to be with the Lord this morning at 5:30am. She fought a very long battle of Parkinson’s. Her personality was lost a long time ago and her body has finally caught up. This has been a very tough time for the whole family. She left behind a loving husband, 2 sons, 2 daughter-in-laws, and 4 grandchildren (3 of which have autism and are going to have a tough time understanding where their Oma went). Please pray for them all. I love each one of them and even though everyone is relieved that her suffering on this earth has ended, she will be dearly missed by those she left behind. Give your loved ones an extra hug today! Ignore the small stuff that gets on your nerves and keep your eyes on the big picture! We are not promised tomorrow!

God Bless You All!

I just shared this email with my friends and family and I thought it would be a wonderful one to share with you all as well.

Time has not allowed me to send this email until now, but I know it will brighten your day. Sometimes you just have to dance! When life gets you down and satan runs you over, sometimes you just have to dance! On August 30 of this year, Scott turned 39. We have been hit with so many challenges and through it all, my husband has this true talent to make people laugh. It use to be his defense mechanism when he was younger that has blossomed into a wonderful gift from God. I continually receive this wonderful blessing from him! There is not a day that goes by that my husband does not make me laugh! The worse your mood, the harder he will try. On his birthday this year, he wanted to visit our favorite Japanese Restaurant. Before we arrived, both of our children reminded me that the restaurant would sing Happy Birthday to you. I decided to let them plan it all. McKayla nervously snuck out saying she needed to go the restroom and bravely went to the hospitality counter to inform them that we had a birthday boy sitting at our table. She came came back just beaming. When the chef asked if it was a special night for anyone at the table, both Andrew and I had to point out that it was Scott’s birthday. Let the games begin. This chef picked on Scott and gave him a taste of his own medicine. He had the whole table laughing. As our dinner drew to a close, a gentleman came over to ask Andrew if it was his birthday. Andrew said that it was his Dad’s. Oh No! The jig is up now. Scott knew something was going to happen. When the waiters and waitresses walked over, there were only 3 of them in the birthday conga line. I remarked outloud that Scott apparently was not important enough to draw a big crowd. Our waiter heard us and within moments, there were 15 employees beating a drum and singing out Happy Birthday to my husband. It only gets better from here. After the first song, they asked Scott to stand up on a chair and dance for the second song. This is something I do not think you would ever see me doing in a public restaurant, but my husband knew it was his kids who set this whole chain of events into action and he planned along beautifully. I was laughing so hysterically at the site of my husband dancing on this chair, that I almost needed to excuse myself to go to the restroom. The kids were just beaming with pride with the thought they jsut pulled one over on dad. The restaurant clicks a picture of its special birthday patrons. I so wish you could see the chair in this picture. This was Scott while he was dancing. As he danced, one of the patrons sitting at our table pulled out a dollar from his wallet to “pay Scott for his dancing”. By this time, the whole restaurant has joined in on the laughter! You can see the redness (from embarrassment) in Scott’s cheeks in the picture. It was a great memory to share with our kids and I know it will be one that will be repeated often throughout the years. (Probably not as often as the story of both dad and Gampa walking through the screen door in the same night! That’s another story!) So, I pray that no matter what life brings you, you remember to always dance!!!

Hi All! I pray you are all having a great week. We have now completed 3 weeks of schooling and I already need a break! There are times that the daily grind really gets to me. Just as I was getting really bummed out - God knew exactly what I needed to help me out. He led me to an online Science class on creation. I just signed up my kids. It is for 6 weeks, starting Sept. 22. It is geared toward children aged K-8th grade or anyone interested in the wonders of God’s awesome creation! The information for the class can be found at http://tinyurl.com/creationkids. The outline of the class is as follows:

Class One: The Creation Week

Class Two: Flood Geology, Noah and the Fossil Record

Class Three: Evidence for a Young Earth and the Big Bang

Class Four: Thermodynamics, Problems with Darwin’s Theory, False Concepts

Class Five: DNA and Protein, Ernst Haeckel, Human Senses

Class Six: What Scientists Believe, Bad Science, and Hoaxes

I’ll let you know how it went when it is done, but thus far, I am impressed. The handbook we downloaded was pretty good. I know even I will learn a few things!

Blessings!

Well, we have now given the English program a good ole college try. The curriculum is working great for my son who is a very independent learner and great reader. However, it no longer meets the needs of my daughter. She has some expressive language learning disorders and having to figure out the lessons all on her own by reading off the computer screen is now driving her CRAZY. I have tried to supplement by reteaching the lesson to her after she has completed the lessons. I see what she has missed and go over it with her. That seemed to work for a bit, but now she is resisting completing the lessons in the first place. She tells me that she just does not understand it till I teach it to her. She is more of a visual learner too. It was worth a try. I have really tried to move both of my children to more independent studies, but it looks like we still have a bit more to do before we can make that happen. I would love input on some other curricula you guys have used, especially for those with language learning disorders. I am going to keep going with my son. We will see where that leads us.

Hi Everyone!
I do not normally send out referrals for anything, but this time I just had too. My husband found this wonderful site called www.thegrocerygame.com. You can try it out for only a $1.00 for a month - for as many grocery stores that she has set up in the area. I have Bi-Lo, Publix, Wal-Mart, CVS and Food Lion checked right now.
Let me tell you that it is well worth it. Basically, this lady has taken all the advertised as well as the unadvertised grocery store specials and linked them with their corresponding coupon. She has really put together an awesome program that is easy to use. If the item is listed as blue, she urges you to stock up on it. The price would be lower than what you can get it from Costco or Sam’s. If it is green, it will be free for you except for tax. If it is black, it is okay to purchase in small amounts. It is that easy. I urge you to try it. If you like it, then you can sign-up for the service which is only $5.00 per grocery store for an 8 week session. (If you are nice enough to use my email address, monica@scottkillen.com, as a referral when you sign-up then I get 12 weeks free.) I pray you are all doing well and that this blesses you financially in some small way. With gas prices the way they are, we need all the help we can get. Even if you don’t use coupons, this program will make it easier to see the store specials.

A special friend of mine shared an incredible story with me this morning. Her husband is fighting cancer right now. He is doing great but a recent medication is making him feel very sick and tired. His back just aches and it is so hard for him to get comfortable. Last night, he could not sleep. He arose and went into the spare bedroom to sleep. As he laid there between alertness and slumber, he began to have a conversation with God. It was a true heart to heart of how tired he is with his battle of this awful disease. What God showed him was incredible! A friend of his from work’s father is also fighting cancer. His cancer is much more advanced and he is under hospice’s care. My friend’s husband has never met this man at all, but here he was walking him to heaven’s gate. He just knew that’s where they were walking and then he immediately woke up. As he came into the office today, he sought out his friend to tell him of his dream about his dad. His friend was not there. He called on the phone later to tell him that his dad went home to be with the Lord this morning around 6am. WHOA!!! Do you have the chills? It brought tears to my eyes!

I just had the strangest thing happen with my daughter tonight. But at the same time, it was extremely insightful! She placed two drawings she had made earlier that night onto our pillows. She chuckled as I walked into my bedroom and found the pictures.

As I read the inscriptions, I was immediately intrigued. She had written good-bye on both of them. When I asked her about them, she remarked, “That’s in case you die tonight. I wanted to make sure I said good-bye.” After I got over my laugh and saw her tears, I realized she was being serious. We have told our children often that we are not promised tomorrow. She really wanted to make sure we knew she loved us. It really meant a lot to her. Out of the mouth of babes!!! Have you told all your loved ones how you feel? You are not promised tomorrow. Do not wait! If you can’t speak the words, take a lesson from my daughter and make a card. May God Bless you All!

We had a small learning curve we had to master before the kids really could complete an assignment on their own. We learned a cool technique within the program. When you have one of the book pages open, you can right-click on the mouse and select to have the passages read to you. This is especially great for one of mine who really has trouble with reading comprehension. I can also go into the program and reset assignments and quizzes. We had to do this for the first couple of them because we were all still learning. The program also keeps up with how much time they spend on each assignment. I really liked that. Plus, already having the lessons plans completed and ready to print really saves me a lot of time. I also like that there are built-in projects and research papers the kids have to complete. We haven’t completely determined if we really like using it just yet, but there is still time…

We just switched to this curriculum. I know it is the end of the year. I wanted something the kids could do throughout the summer on their own. We don’t take the whole summer off. When we have in the past, it was awful starting again in the fall. My kids seemed to have forgotten everything. Now, we continue on a summer schedule. Anyway, we just purchased the Language for 5th and 6th grades and Bible. I have to say that I am impressed. There are two main parts to this curriculum - the teacher’s and the student’s. I had to go and set up each of my students in my section. It was great. I could set up how many attempts I was to give them to try and answer the question correctly, my calendar year, how many assignments I want them to complete each day, the grading scale, whether to take off for spelling, and so much more. I can review their answers and everything. It is great! When the kids click onto their section, a list of assignments pop up. They can tell which assignments they have completed and when they are due. SOS even assigns projects. It is way cool! We just started. As we complete sections and tests, I will blog some more to let you know how it is going. For now, the kids are very successful. They read the chapter on their own and answer a series of questions. After they answer it, they push the grade button and get instant feedback. I have it set for three attempts right now. The kids go through all of the questions once and grade them. Then, we go back through the ones they missed together so I know what needs to be taught again. So far, it is wonderful! We will just have to see how the tests go.

We will have to take our trip to Kennedy Space center later on in the year. God had other plans for us right now. I have really messed up my left-leg. I either pulled a tendon or detached my muscle on my left calf. It is really painful and will take me weeks to recover — boohoo! So, unfortunately we cannot go next week. Keep at lookout though. This is still something we can’t wait to do!

My husband shared a truly, uplifting story at lunch today. I pray I do it justice as I tell the story. He met a lady today whose husband went home to be with the Lord recently. He left behind an incredible wife, a very young child and a new infant. He spent only 6 hours with his infant child before he went home and passed away. My husband was impressed by this young mother’s strength and courage. She spoke so warmly of her husband. She told of the day he went home to be with the Lord. The very day their infant was born. She was happy her husband had gotten to meet his new child and called it a good day. This was the Lord’s plan and she knew her husband was with the Lord. So, I ask you, “Will it be a good day the day you die?” “Will people be able to say that you have gone home to be with the Lord?” I pray for each of you that it will be a good day! “Will others see God’s strength in you if you were in this young mother’s shoes?”

It is wonderful especially if you feel overwhelmed with homeschooling and living a Godly life. She if the wife of Mike Farris, one of the originators of the HSLDA and a huge advocate for homeschoolers. She is a mother of ten children and has felt everything that each of everyone of us have. I thought the book was going to be about practical tips to homeschool, instead it is more of her biography. It is wonderful! I was convicted over and over while being comforted at the same time. We all go through tough times, but we don’t have a full appreciation of the good times without the the tough times. Praise and blessings to each one of you during the holiday season.

Hi Everyone! Feel free to comment! I would love to hear from you! I was reading my sister-in-love’s blog this morning only to remember something that happened to me in September that I wanted to share with you all.

I was having one of my days! Everything seemed to be going wrong! The kids and I had a field trip planned to Cypress Gardens. It was about 45 minutes from our house. We barely made it out of the house and it seemed that every traffic light stopped my along the way. We were running about 15 minutes late. I wanted to call the field trip coordinator only to realize that I did not have her number. That knowledge did not sink in until we were about 5 miles from our destination. Then it hit me. The reason I did not have her number, was I had forgotten my purse. Now what was I going to do? I explained the situation to the children with the expectation of meeting some resistance only to be blessed! In the midst of my apologizing to the children because it looked like they were going to miss out on this field trip, Andrew turned to me and said, “It’s okay Mom. God’s what’s the most important, not this field trip!” I was humbled and no longer felt the stress of the morning on my shoulders. We were blessed again when the attendant let me call my husband and pay to enter into the gardens by credit card. Needless to say, we had a great time! How much easier would our lives be if we kept our eyes on God? When you feel the stress of homeschooling or from just being a mom, keep Andrew’s words in your ear, “It’s okay. God’s what’s the most important! Amen!

It is so hard when you are homeschooling to keep things in perspective and to keep your eyes on the bigger picture. The mundane tasks we do everyday can get to us if we let them. Plus, when you are having a power struggle with your child, the days seem endless with struggles! Print this little poem out and stick it on your refrigerator. It is a good one to keep on the top of your head! God Bless You All!

Hey! I decided to just make this entry personal. We all have different reasons for homeschooling. We believe it truly is the best thing for our children. But how do we know when we are reaching our children? I do not believe that standardized tests reflect anything accurate in our children. So, how do you know? Do you ever feel like you are just like a rat stuck in its wheel, going nowhere? I have recently had feelings like that and I tend to get very anxious over them. I have been praying to God to help me overcome my anxieties in homeschooling my children. Well, last night he sent me two angels that made me feel so good about what I am doing. We housed two of our church visitors last night. They came into town for a vacation only to have to put their mom into the hospital for a bleeding ulcer. Their prayers were answered in better health for their mom, but their timeshare ran out and they needed a place to stay for one more night. We opened our home to them and they gave back to us so much more. This couple, who are grandparents, took such an interest in my children. They sat down with them and asked them all about their schooling. They loved our little classroom and really took the time to engage both of my children. As I stood in the corner sipping on my hot chocolate, tears stung my eyes as I heard my children explain what they were currently learning. It was incredible!! This couple later took me aside and told me just what a delight my children were and it was obvious they had a true love for the Lord. How often do we get to hear these words. We work so hard with our children! It was a blessing and in my eyes, an answered prayer! So, to all you homeschooling mommas, keep up the good work. Don’t give up!

The kids and I LOVE to go letterboxing. It is similar to geocaching but not quite as difficult. You basically follow the “treasure map” to locate a hidden plastic box. Inside the box is a book that you can stamp and sign. Then, you take the stamp found inside and stamp your book with it as a memory or your search. The kids and I have found a couple around town and as far away as Greenville, SC and Raleigh, NC. It’s great fun! Try it out today! http://www.letterboxing.org/ Let me know what you think. Come back and post a comment! Also, the forums should be up and running soon. That will be a great way for us to capture and record all sorts of ideas and tips.

Thanks to someone posting a message on another homeschool group, I have been introduced to lap books. They are great and I can’t wait to start working on one tomorrow. Basically, you start with 3 manilla folders and build out a book with it. Then, you glue your daily lessons into the book - kindda like a scrapbook, but so much better. The 2 main sites that I highly recommend are: www.liveandlearnpress.com and www.homeschoolinthewoods.com. At www.liveandlearnpress.com, they offer 3 free downloadable lapbooks. You have to join their yahoo group first to gain access, but the yahoo group is slamful of lots of ideas. At www.homeschoolinthewoods.com, they offer the BEST old testament lap book. I ordered it instantly and I can’t wait til it gets here. They also offer what looks like a GREAT time-line kits. I was so excited that I wanted to order it all. Enjoy and have fun! Let me know if you like them as much as I do!!

If you are like me, you have spent more time worrying about your child’s education than you need too. We all have! I don’t think you can take on the task of homeschooling your child without having those kinds of days. For me, I either need a quick kick in the tail or a gentle reminder from the Lord himself. When you have your days of worry, go to these scriptures and spend some time in prayer and watch your worries disappear:

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Matt. 6:27

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matt. 6:24

We are called to teach our children. If we have Christ as our center focus, how can we not be effective in teaching our children? Yes, we will all have those days, but look to Christ and pray! Shoot me an email and I will be happy to pray for you too!

As a parent, I sometimes worry about all of the junk on the Internet. My children don’t use the Internet without supervision and I spent a few dollars on software that blocks adult oriented material. I remember wishing there was a simpler (and cheaper) way to block sites that I didn’t want my kids to see. I knew that the Internet uses a big phone book (called DNS) to translate human-readable names (like homeschoolcampfire.com) to one of 4,294,967,296 machine-readable numerical addresses. If only I could find a way to white-out all of the places I didn’t want the kids (or myself for that matter) to stumble upon.

Enter OpenDNS. OpenDNS is a free service that I discovered a while back. OpenDNS has recently added several new features of interest to me as a protective parent. You can tell OpenDNS to block known phishing sites. (Phishing sites are sites that look legitimate but are set up to harvest sensitive information–read account numbers and passwords!–from unsuspecting visitors.) You can also tell OpenDNS to block known adult web sites. In fact, you can tell OpenDNS to block any site you wish.

OpenDNS has other advantages (ever wish you could just type ‘hc’ into your browser instead of homeschoolcampfire.com?) which you can read about on the OpenDNS features page, but as a parent I am most concerned with the site blocking options (and the fact that it is FREE).

Did I mention that OpenDNS is easy to set up? OpenDNS provides illustrated instructions for any type of computer setup you might have. Setup takes less than five minutes. Instructions are presented in detailed steps and screen shots are provided for almost every step.

One thing to note is that OpenDNS does not block search results, nor thumbnail images from adult sites that result from image searches, but then most software doesn’t block this type of thing.

I have been using OpenDNS for about 6 months at both my home and my office and I have never had a problem with it. It is simple and easy to use–just set it and forget it. I highly recommend OpenDNS as a weapon in your arsenal to protect your kids from Internet trash.

If you click on the Back to School link, you will see a section on the right-hand side about newsletter subscriptions. These are great for keeping track of what your child should be learning from kindergarten up to the fifth grade. I subscribed to them last year and have been rather impressed with the newsletter. It is written from a view point of the public schools to the parents. For example, the one I received today was titled, “What Will My Fifth-Grader Learn in Writing?” I used the newsletters as a gauge to make sure I covered what needed to be taught during the school year. The rest of the website is full of lots of great tips and ideas too.
