La Jolla, one of the most affluent communities of San Diego, is also one of San Diego’s most attractive destinations for tourists. Visitors can soak up the sun at its numerous beautiful beaches (including the La Jolla cove), stroll through its famed shopping districts, and check out the plethora of museums and aquariums, such as the Birch Aquarium and San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. La Jolla is also notable for its many delicious restaurants, both casual and upscale. The following guide should provide you with plenty of ideas on where to eat should you visit La Jolla.

PIZZA

While La Jolla is known more for its fancy eateries, there are many casual dining establishments as well. The most well known La Jolla pizza restaurant is Extreme Pizza. This pizzeria specializes in thin crust pizzas and uses gluten-free ingredients. They are known in particular for their unique topping options. Adventurous combinations include a pizza with Middle Eastern ingredients (homemade hummus, tomatoes, olives, onions, feta, fresh basil, pepperoncinis, and mozzarella), the Ragin’ Rooster pizza (chicken marinated in BBQ sauce, red onions, fresh cilantro, cheddar and mozzarella), and the Paia Pie (Canadian bacon, Hawaiian pineapple, Mandarin oranges, fresh tomato sauce, mozzarella and cheddar).

SUSHI

If you have a hankering for some La Jolla sushi during your visit, you should make Clay’s La Jolla your destination. Although billed as a sushi lounge, this restaurant actually has a diverse selection of seafood and non-seafood plates, such as chicken, steak, hamburgers, and so on. Like Extreme Pizza, Clay’s La Jolla is known for its unique menu items. The Ahi Tuna Tower, for example, features diced tuna tossed in Thai chili oil, mango, Japanese cucumber, micro beet flowers, ginger guava mustard, and pomegranate on a purple Thai rice cake. Clay’s La Jolla is committed to its vegetarian customers also, so you can find plenty of vegetarian or vegan options here.

ITALIAN

The Piatti Ristorante & Bar is the number one Italian restaurant in La Jolla. Piatti is a traditional Italian trattoria, complete with open kitchen, stone hearth, and outside patio. Although the food is delicious, the atmosphere is really what makes this place special. Piatti manages to balance luxury and casualness just right - it is classy without being “fancy schmancy.” If you dine here, you will definitely want to opt for the outside patio seating, especially during the summer months. Its blend of classy and casual also makes it the perfect restaurant to take a date.

hometownmeal.com

Orange-Vanilla Iced Tea

Orange-Vanilla Iced Tea

As the summer days begin to heat up, iced tea season is in, and it’s time for another refreshing vapor beverage recipe. We’re using a Volcano Vaporizer to introduce a couple of southern flavors to our iced tea, before serving the tea with a vapor garnish. Say hello to iced tea with vapor infused vanilla. To get started, you’ll need:

1 Gallon Filtered Water

½ oz Black Tea Leaves

1 cup Raw Cane Sugar

1 tsp Vanilla Extract

1 cup Simple Sugar

½ cup dried Orange Peel.

1 oz Vodka (optional)

Brew the leaves in water just off the boil, around 195 degrees F.

Add the sugar while the water is still hot, and mix thoroughly for 60 seconds.

Place the tea in the fridge to cool down, and turn your vaporizer up to medium heat, around 350-400 F.

Fill the heating chamber with 1 tsp of vanilla extract, making sure to use a liquid pad where necessary.

Combine the Simple Sugar and Vodka in a large mixing bowl.

Once the vaporizer reaches temperature, turn on the fan and wait until a powerful vanilla scent emerges from the vaporizer.

Dip the mixology attachment into the mixing bowl for 10-15 seconds 3-4 times.

Taste and repeat if necessary.

Next, turn the vaporizers temperature up to 425 and add the dried orange peel to the filling chamber.

Add orange vapors to the ice until the glass is full of a light colored mist.

Slowly pour the tea over the ice, and add 1oz of the sugar-vodka mix.

Serve with a slice of orange.

This is a beautiful vaporizer recipe that produces a delicate orange tea experience, with a mild hint of vanilla flavor in the aftertaste. If done correctly, the drink should be served immediately, so that the vapors do not dissipate into the air. Include an orange peel garnish in each glass for an added bitter aspect, or turn the vaporizer’s heat up above 400 F for a slightly smoky note.

With so many islands making up the Bahamas, complete with beautiful corals and warm tropical-weathered waters, it is hardly surprising that fish is the local staple diet. Indeed, many of the restaurants you’ll see on the Bahamas serve excellent – and mouth-watering – seafood menus, based of course on the ample local catches.

Bahamas Delicacies from the Sea

A local soup to start with is called “souse”. This contains onions, pepper, water, lime juice and meat. The soup is usually served as an appetizer to the main meal and tastes great as a stand-alone, too.

Another great delicacy is the local craw-fish (a sort of local lobster). This lobster is served with rice and pigeon peas, which are also known as tropical green peas or “gandul”. The meal also normally comes with bacon, tomatoes, and celery. Add some thyme and a pinch of pepper and you have a great meal to enjoy as the sun sets in front of you.

For dessert, try the local specialities like avocado cheesecake or pineapple tart. Most of the desserts will concentrate on the local coconuts that are ample across the islands. So be prepared to have almost anything served with some coconut – or coconut milk – to add natural sweetness or creamy richness to the foods.

Of course, with all this, you will need a drink to wash it down. Try the local tea called Island Rose tea, which you can have hot or cold. And don’t forget that the Bahamas has its own beer called Kalik, served in pretty much all Bahamas beach resorts. Kalik is a brewed on the island and accounts for over half of all the beer consumed across all the Bahamas. It is not, however, sold outside the islands, so make sure you have a taste of it while you’re there.

Even though it has not officially ever left the islands, the Kalik beer has won international recognitions; it has won three times the Monde Selection Gold Medals from the International Institute for Beer Quality Selections. The beer is not heavy in alcohol, and is often drunk during the day to quench the thirst instead of loosen the inhibited.

So in just one evening meal the distinctiveness of the Bahamas has come out across these dishes, delights, and drinks. If, later in the evening, a light snack is required, try the conch salad. A conch is a snail-like mollusk, typically skinned before it’s eaten.

The lightly cooked conch salad usually comes with onions, celery, sweet pepper, and tomatoes. Half a cup of sour orange is also usually added, along with lemons. You can’t get a better late-night meal in the Bahamas than this!

Diabetes strikes millions each year all over the world. A small number are born with the condition of either the inability to produce insulin or the body is resistant to the insulin it produces. This is called Type 1 diabetes or juvenile diabetes. The greater number of diabetics is diagnosed later in life, or what is called as Type 2 diabetes or onset diabetes. The condition presents itself because of unhealthy lifestyles and diets, making their insulin production inadequate for the proper functioning of the body.

In both cases of diabetes, the diet is of primary importance. Since diabetes is a disorder of the metabolism, it is important to be under a strict and healthy diet to properly manage this condition. The following are some of the ways to manage diabetes properly through proper diets:

Avoid or cut down dramatically on artificial foods such as colas and sugar packed drinks, packed or canned food, diet chocolates and the like.

High sugar breads, such as white bread, nan, pizzas, burgers and other high cholesterol fried foods.

Sugar packed products such as juices, sweet fruits and other sucrose rich items.

High carbohydrate food such as corn flour, white rice, fried potatoes, overt amounts of dairy and eggs.

Excessive amounts of roasted peanuts or too much tea or coffee. These items decrease nutrient absorption as they are diuretics, making glucose absorption much harder for the diabetic.

Decrease the amounts of butter, ghee, oils or other food additives that are high in fat as they prevent insulin absorption by the body.

Now that the don’ts have been discussed, the allowed foods for diabetics are what follow:

Use poly-unsaturated oils (corn oil or safflower oil) or mono-saturated oils (olive oil or bran oil) when cooking food.

Use herbs to promote insulin processes such as karela (bitter melon) methi seed sprouts, neem, jamun fruit and other plant extracts. These are often available in over the counter supplements.

Increase garlic consumption as this helps in decreasing cholesterol in the body and helps in lowering blood sugar levels. Garlic is also rich in potassium, zinc, sulphur and manganese to replace these lost nutrients when diabetics urinate.

Increasing the fiber content in the diet helps in managing diabetes. Thus increasing whole wheat fiber in the food intake, such as bread and oats, can help in managing most diseases especially diabetes.

Increasing the intake of soya bean, vegetables, legumes, butter milk and other healthy ingredients can help in managing diabetes.

Unlike many diet fads, it’s not just what you eat but when you eat and how much you eat. Managing diabetes is a daily concern and thus in order to keep it in check, do be aware of what is allowed and what is disallowed for those suffering from metabolic disorders such as diabetes. Also, having a regular check up and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper exercise and habits can help keep diabetes in check yet still enjoying what life has in store for you.

I recently had the great pleasure of being part of an event at Boathouse Restaurant of Traverse City, Michigan. Traverse City is a small, but culturally rich city that enjoys the shores of Lake Michigan. The Boathouse Restaurant is located on the water, with over 300 feet of frontage, and limitless lake views. It is gorgeous. But there’s more to the Boathouse than meets the eye.

Boathouse strives to offer their guests the best, freshest, most local ingredients possible. The owners grow many of the restaurant’s vegetables, fruits and herbs themselves. The restaurant also features many local wines, as Traverse City is the wine capital of the Midwest (as well as the cherry capital of the world).

My first visit to Boathouse was for a special Farm to Table Event, in honor of Bakers Green Acres. A local farm family, the Bakers, were invited to dinner. The family provided the ingredients, and the chef transformed them into a gourmet four-course meal for us.

We enjoyed family style seating at tables while Chef Eric Nittolo introduced us to the family of honor and the themes of the event. The farmer himself then took the floor and told us how the chickens and hogs of which we were about to partake, were raised. It was an education!

We started our learning experience with what was probably the most delicious salad I’ve ever enjoyed: an apple beet salad, with local mixed greens, local apples, and epoisses cheese. It was a work of art.

The next course was potato-wrapped chicken, with asparagus risotto and a morel cream sauce. This was followed by the main entrée: Mangalista hog schnitzel, breaded and fried, and served with beet spätzle, capers, grilled lemons, and a lemon buerre blanc.

And lastly, we were treated to a local ice cream topped with candied pecans, which somehow worked wonderfully with the recommended local wine: Left Foot Charley.

As you can probably infer, it was much more than a meal, and reminded me of the sense of community that used to surround mealtime, and could, with just a little effort, surround mealtime again. We were not in a hurry, we enjoyed one another’s company, and we knew what we were eating, and who was responsible for bringing it to the table. It was a yogic experience, and I recommend it to everyone. Visit the Boathouse Restaurant, or create your own Farm to Table event. Then sit back, and enjoy.

I’m not going to lie, I love to eat food and right now all you food lovers out there should be prepping yourself for an onslaught of pure eating joy. Since I’m being honest, I have another important snippet of information that may even make some of you angry or frustrated. I am one of those people who can eat as much as they want and not gain a pound. In fact, my main concern is to eat as much as possible so I don’t lose weight and let me tell you, I enjoy every minute of it! However, I have started to become a little concerned that maybe food has the upper hand in our relationship.

Does food run my life?
From the moment I wake up until the moment I go to bed you want to know what I think about? You guessed it, food. Have you ever just finished a meal and there you are already thinking about your next experience? “Oh man, that breakfast was sooo good. I’m stuffed. What do you think we should make for lunch?” I’m telling you, it’s controlling me and I don’t know what to do.

Why do I like to cook?
Well considering that it apparently controls my life, I better know how to make it. But it’s not just that. The slicing, the dicing, that fresh cut garlic hitting your nose. The colors, the smells, the excitement as it bubbles on the stove or in the oven, not to mention that I got it all to come out at the right time somehow. Wow! I don’t know about you, but this is just about the time of the process when my “food dance” comes out. Yeah that’s right, my food dance. I get so excited when food is almost done, it looks so tasty, and maybe even just as I’m eating that first bite, I find myself hopping around in pure joy. I told you it’s got a hold of me and there’s no way to stop it.

Why do I like to exercise?
For a while I had myself convinced that I simply love days where I ski in the morning, shovel snow in the afternoon, and play basketball at night. I thought maybe I love the exercise and that it’s good for my health, etc, etc. Then, the truth started to reveal itself. The more I exercise, the hungrier I get and the more I love to eat. When I’m full at 5:00 from a big lunch, do I settle for a light bite of dinner at 7:00? No way, are you crazy? I go do something active to build up the appetite for a proper meal! Okay, now, I was just thinking that I could somehow turn it all around, tell you that food doesn’t control me, but then it hit me.

Why do I still eat when I’m full?
Yes, that’s right. Many of us do it and it’s so hard to stop. We need to realize, it’s not our fault. What else could explain why I would want to go past being satisfied, to pretty full, to stuffed, to "don’t look at me, it hurts!" And then when I’m sitting there at the restaurant table in a state of misery I catch myself picking at the bread that’s still in the basket thinking, "Why oh why is this still here, waiter please come save me!" The explanation is simple.

Food is just that Delicious
It all comes back to my original point. Food is fantastic, tasty and wonderful. It is a joy of life that many of us are lucky to be able to enjoy in excess. However, to truly enjoy eating, you should earn it. Be active and be healthy and you will enjoy eating even more. There are many people in the world who aren’t so lucky, so when you’re eating I better hear some loud "MMM’s" coming from your mouth!

For college students, lazy singles, hungry families, and busy people, the website www.diningin.com is a gift from the heavens. The website is basically an order and delivery service from nearly any restaurant in your area, even those that don’t deliver themselves. Diningin works with the restaurants to deliver your food within an hour of ordering. I know, an hour seems like a long time for the hungry, but couple hunger with laziness and hunger is no match. An hour is but a speed bump to enjoy a plate of Chili's ribs delivered right to your front door.

To foray into this world of good eats and laziness, just visit diningin.com. Even the restaurants that seem too high-end or formal for delivery participate in this program. If you want a burger from McDonalds or a petite filet from LeStinky French Bistro, they have you covered. By entering your zip code, you can see a list of many restaurants that deliver through Diningin. Small chain and high-end restaurants alike are on this list. You can browse restaurants by cuisine, genre, and more. Just a few examples of cuisines are Asian/Sushi, Cuban, Deli, Ice Cream, and Steakhouse. Countless others are found on this list, and the cuisines more popular in a city are most likely to be found on that city’s list. For instance, in Chicago, you know there will be a ton of deep dish pizza stops. For you Philly folks, be prepared to have a kaleidoscope of choices to order a cheese steak from. Basically the only thing they won't do is chew your food.

Catering can also be ordered through this website. Catering did we say? Yes! You thought having someone cook your food was easy enough, now you can order the food online and have it delivered to your door. In a few years, they may even bring the guests and entertainment! Well, maybe not but you get the picture I am painting. Once again, cuisines or restaurant types can be searched. This is also a “Daily Deals” tab for each city. Specials are always something eaters are looking for and Diningin caters (food joke) to the frugal as well as the extravagant.

Here is the bad news - if your house is outside of the delivery range, you are out of luck - sigh. This site is mainly for city dwellers so many suburbs are not included in this range. This makes sense since the delivery time is estimated at under an hour.

With delivery time under an hour from ordering, Diningin.com is a great place for lunch ordering at work and dinner ordering at home. And, if you have any questions, they are available most hours of the day. You will most likely reach their answering service but they will be able to assist you with any order questions either way. When it comes to dinner, you can order your food before you leave the office, drive home (probably in rush-hour traffic), and have your warm dinner arriving just in time with you. Oh did we forget to mention that you pay online? You won't even need to sift through your pockets to get money for your delivery person or have them waiting by your front door while you look for money, possibly eyeing up your collection of porcelain alligators or your 22inch Vizio. You simply type in your credit card information and pay for the food and tip. With all of these great aspects, Diningin is something you should try for your next meal.

Most people have probably heard the old wives’ tale that eating carrots will help you see in the dark, but is there any truth in these kinds of statements? It is certainly true the vitamin E which is found in carrots is associated with people’s night vision but no matter how many carrots you eat you unlikely to be aware of any noticeable improvement in your night vision! Can eating any other foods help my eye sight in anyway? The answer to this is no but there are certainly foods that you should consider eating which can help maintain the health of your eyes. These foods are as follows :

Kale

Spinach

Brussel sprouts

Collards

Lettuce

So what is it about these particular vegetables that may help maintain the health of my eyes? Well put simply, they all contain the anti oxidants Lutein and Zeaxanthin which are known to be vital to the health of our eyes. These anti oxidants are thought to reduce the chances of getting degenerative diseases in the eye such as cataracts and Macular degeneration. Fortunately, cataracts can now be easily treated by surgeons but the same cannot be said of macular degeneration which can lead to a slow loss of central vision. There is no successful treatment for macular degeneration so anything that may prevent it or at least slow down its progress should be embraced. Not even laser eye surgery can treat macular degeneration which is why is causes blindness in so many people throughout the world.

Now I am not saying that if you eat enough of these vegetables every day you are guaranteed not to get macular degeneration. What I am saying however is that a diet high in these anti oxidants will give your eyes every chance of fighting off these diseases hence maintaining your vision for longer. Besides these vegetables are good for your general health regardless and they are also extremely tasty!

When on vacation one of the things you like to do is getting to know the tradition, culture and of course the typical food of the state or country you are visiting. Some people might do research before going on vacation, but, if you are like me you know you will get there with no clue of where to go eat. That’s why I’m taking the time to write about how you can choose the best tasting food in town when traveling.

Now days most of the people carry a smart phone, so it’s easy for them to just download an application where they can search for places. In my case, I do not have one of those, so I just go with the old way.

Below is a list of tips that will help you choose a quality restaurant on your next vacation:

Just ask people that are from the area. The staff of the hotel that you are staying at, store employees or people you find on your way, who probably will be the best to tell you where and what the best places to eat in the area. They will also know of the various types of restaurants such as Mexican, Italian, and French…etc. if you don’t feel like exploring typical local food in that town.

Most hotels carry local tourist guide and sample magazine which all contain sometimes numerous discount coupons and local restaurant weekly ads. Also, in those publications you can find anything from food, stores or places of interest in the area. If you don’t find one in your hotel room, you can always ask someone at the front desk of the hotel or go to the local tourist information center where they definitely will have that type of information ready for you to grab. Check the restaurant listings for summary of particular restaurant menu offerings, location, phone number, and of course the pricing information. Or you can use, if available, the computer at the hotel and you can search for websites or blogs that contain information about local restaurants like for example us ( www.hometownmeal.com ).

You can also walk a short distance or drive around to find restaurants that might have great food nearby.
