Detailed Side Skirt Installation - Honda Civic

It is always best to fit the sideskirt first before applying paint.

Some items may require work such as drilling holes or sanding to install.

If not supplied with your new side skirts, you are going to need the following for the installation: Tapping Screws, Small Screws, Speed Nuts, Installation Hardware, Rivets

First step is to remove your old side skirts, unscrew all of the bolts at the ends. Now locate the plastic grommets on the side skirts and remove them. You may need to break them to get them off, now the part should just come off the car. You will replace theold grommets with ones provided with your side skirts. If none are provided, you can purchase some at your local automotive parts store. Clean any grease, oil, dirt, etc. from the area. Dish soap works fine.

Installation Procedure
Now test fit the side skirt to make sure that it fits properly. You may need to make slight modifications to line it up for a secure fit. if there are no pre-drilled screw holes on the side skirt make them now. Once you are done modifying the parts and they are a good fit, take the parts to a local auto paint shop. Make sure you do not install the side skirts prior to painting them. If you do and they do not fit correctly, you will need to repaint them after making modifications to them. After the side skirts are painted and dry, fit them onto the body of the vehicle. If you do not have existing holes to attach the new side skirts to your car, you will need to drill new ones now. Just be careful when drilling near the newly painted parts, dust can attach itself to them. Once drilling is complete, use the supplied tapping screws to install the side skirt.Check loose screws periodically and tighten them.

This is just a general instruction on installing your own body kit, in most cases body kits come with their own instruction manual. If that is the case, it is best to follow them first or if there seems to be a problem with the fit, try consulting a professional.

Guidelines on installing your own body kit.

Prior to installing a body kit on your car, you should take proper steps to ensure that it is done correctly. We encourage you to have the parts installed by a professional but for those you who want to do the project on their own these directions will get you started.

Prepping & Cleaning Procedure:
Using a good quality paper towel and grease remover or lacquer thinner, completely and throughly clean the painted surface area on the car where you will apply double sided tape. Do not allow the paper towel or cloth to remain on the car for too long as it will cause damage to the painted surface. Once cleaned, use a minimum amount of adhesion promoter (just enough to fully coat the surface) on a clean lint-free cloth and apply a thin coating to the surface where you will apply the double face tape. All the adhesion promoter to completely dry before you attempt installing the new part(s).

Note: If you do not intend to paint your entire car, we highly recommend that you paint the bumper prior to installing it on your car.

Front Bumper Installation:
Remove your old factory bumper and save all of the hardware to use later. You may need to remove the styrofoam insert as the new bumper may not fit properly over it. Pre-fit the new bumper on the car to make sure that everything lines up. If it does not, make adjustments by sanding or grinding. Use your old factory bumper as a guide to drill new holes into your new bumper. Once you have done so install the new bumper with the original factory bumper hardware.

Side Skirt Installation:
After removing your old side skirts, use a cloth to clean the using the procedure mentioned above. Once prepped, pre-fit the side skirts onto the car to make sure parts are properly aligned. Use a grease pencil to mark where you want to install the side skirts. Now you will need to measure out a strip of double sided tape and attach it to the side underside of the side skirt if they did not come with it. Peel back about 2" of the plastic backing from the tape, so you can position the part on the car with the remaining plastic backing still on the tape. Position the part on the car and once in place pull the plastic backing to expose the double sided tape and press firmly to assure good adhesion. If screw holes do not align properly you will need to drill them yourself at this point. Use a screwdriver to attach screws.

Rear Bumper Installation:
Remove your old factory rear bumper and trim panel that is located above the bumper. Save all of the original factory hardware for later use. You may need to discard the styrofoam absorber as the new bumper may not fit properly over it. Place the bumper on the car to test fit it. Once you have it lined up properly and fit is assured drill holes into the new bumper using the original factory bumper holes as a reference. Using the original factory screws, attach the bumper to your car. You may need to drill additional holes into each wheel well to secure the bumper.

There are 2 main materials for building body kits, and I hope this helps out in your search in buying a body kit for your Honda Civic. These 2 materials are out in the market and both of them have their own pros and cons so it is up to the buyer to make sure what fits the need.

Fiberglass - Can be repaired if damaged. Cheaper than Urethane, but often harder to install. Has better paint finish than Urethane.

Urethane - More resistant to small impacts, but irrepairable. Famous for it's durability. Smoother simpler to install. More expensive than fiber glass.

2006 Honda Civic: Review

America's best-selling compact car is redesigned for 2006 with new styling, new safety equipment, and more power. Civic returns in 4-dr sedan and 2-dr coupe body styles, plus a gas/electric Hybrid model. Compared to the 2001-2005 generation, the sedan is larger outside, but smaller in some dimensions inside. The coupe is slightly smaller inside and out. Curtain side airbags are new to Civic, and are standard on all '06 models. ABS is also newly standard on all.

Sedans and coupes come in DX, LX, and top-line EX trim. A sporty Si coupe replaces an Si hatchback. The Hybrid comes only as a sedan. All have a 4-cyl engine. DX, LX, and EX models have 140 hp vs. 115-127 hp previously. The Si has 197 hp, up from 160. The Hybrid combines a gas engine and an electric motor for 110 hp; the previous Civic Hybrid made 93 hp. The Hybrid automatically runs on one or both of its power sources to balance acceleration and fuel economy. The system recharges itself; no plug-in charging is necessary. DX, LX, and EX models use a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic. The Si comes only with a 6-speed manual. The Hybrid has a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that provides near-infinite drive ratios. EX, Si, and Hybrid have 4-wheel disc brakes. The Si has a sport suspension, uprated brakes, and a limited-slip differential designed to direct more power to the outside front wheel in a turn to aid handling.

Front side airbags and curtain side airbags are standard. A navigation system with voice activation is available on EX, Hybrid, and Si. New interior features include a two-tier instrument panel with an analog tachometer ahead of the driver and a separately housed digital speedometer directly above.

Compared to the previous Civic sedan, the '06 is 3.2 inches longer in wheelbase and about 1.5 inches longer and wider overall. It loses 1.4 inches of rear leg room and nearly a half inch of front head room. The coupe's wheelbase is 2 inches shorter than the sedan's, but 1.2 inches longer than the preceding coupe's. It loses an inch of front head room and 2.5 inches rear leg room. The sedan gains about 180 lb over 2005 models, the coupe about 145.
