My Strength Training Routine for Building Lean Muscle After 50

Hi friend! I hope you are doing great and having an awesome week! Today, we’re going to get into one of the most important parts of my body recomposition journey – strength training.

When I first started focusing on building muscle, I was lifting five days a week using progressive overload. I’ve recently adjusted my routine to four strength workouts per week so I could have an extra recovery day and also add back some time to my week.

After being in the gym 5 days a week for probably 8 months, it’s really good to get a day back to myself where I don’t need to go to the gym. With working on my health coaching business, I’m taking Thursday to focus on my clients.

Today, I’m sharing my current weekly workout routine, along with the exercises (reps, sets and weight) I’m doing right now. I hope this detailed info is helpful, but if you have any questions, feel free to email me: honeywerehomeblog@gmail.com

My Weekly Strength Training Schedule + Cardio

Right now my workouts look like this:

Day 1: Glutes & Quads + HITT
Day 2: Shoulders & Triceps + 25 min MISS
Day 3: Glutes + 25 min MISS
Day 4: Rest
Day 5: Back & Rear Delts + 25 min MISS
Day 6: Rest
Day 7: Rest

My strength workouts take a little less than one hour, and I also aim to walk 10,000 steps a day.

What Is Progressive Overload?

The key to building muscle is something called progressive overload. This simply means gradually increasing the challenge placed on your muscles over time.

You can do this by:

Increasing the weight
Increasing the number of reps
Adding additional sets
Improving your form and control
Increase the time under tension, i.e. focusing on the total time your muscles are under strain

Over time, these small increases force your muscles to adapt and grow stronger. Progressive overload is one of the biggest reasons I’ve seen changes in my body composition.

My first two sets of the first two exercises are warm up sets. I also rest at least 60-90 seconds between sets.

Below are the weights I’m currently lifting, but the goal with progressive overload is to gradually increase strength over time. So, I’ve built up to these weights and it took a year to get where I am now!

How to Start Strength Training After 50

If you’re new to strength training, it can feel overwhelming at first. The good news is that you don’t need a complicated routine to get started. I’m 51 and seeing some new muscle for the first time!

For women over 40 and 50, strength training is one of the most important things we can do for our long-term health. Here are a few simple tips if you’re just getting started with lifting weights.

Bikini

Start With 2-3 Workouts Per Week

You don’t need to train five days a week to see results. For beginners, two or three strength workouts per week is a great starting point. This gives your muscles time to recover while still building strength. Once you get comfortable, you can always increase your training frequency.

Focus on Compound Exercises

Compound exercises work multiple muscle groups at the same time and are incredibly effective for building strength. Some great beginner exercises include:

Squats
Hip thrusts
Deadlifts
Lunges
Rows
Shoulder presses

These movements help build a strong foundation.

Don’t Be Afraid of Lifting Weights

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from women is that lifting weights will make them bulky. In reality, strength training helps women:

build lean muscle
support metabolism
improve bone density
increase overall strength

It’s taken me over a YEAR of weightlifting HEAVY 5x a week to even build what I have! So please don’t worry about getting “too big”!

Progress Slowly

You don’t have to lift heavy right away. Instead, focus on:

learning proper form
building consistency
gradually increasing weights over time

That gradual increase is exactly what progressive overload is all about.

Strength training has been one of the most empowering habits I’ve added to my routine. Not only have I become physically stronger, but I also feel more confident, energized, and strong in everyday life.

I’ve always wanted to be able to do an unassisted pull-up and recently tried it at my gym. This set up had 10 lbs assist, but I didn’t need it! I was able to do 6-7 reps! That felt so good!!! I shared a video on my instagram if you want to check it out!

Wedding Guest Dresses in Every Color

Hi friend! Welcome to a fresh new week! I hope you had a great weekend and a wonderful Easter Sunday!

Thank you again for your honeymoon suggestions. Elliott and I spent some time over the weekend reviewing all of your ideas, responses, and recommendations and y’all are so helpful! I think we’ve decided to shelve the idea of Greece for now, especially since many of you pointed out that it’s likely to be cooler at that time of year.

Now, we’re looking into the Caribbean, South America, and the Virgin Islands. All exciting destinations and I will keep you posted!

Wedding Guest Dresses in Every Color

Today is all about wedding guest dresses and I found so many good ones on Amazon. I thought it would be fun to do a round up and share each one in a rainbow of colors. And, most of them are available in several different colors.

Have you ever had your colors done? I’ve only ever asked AI and was told that I’m a “soft autumn.”

Apparently, my best colors are neutrals (warm beige, camel, tan, soft chocolate brown and warm grey) and also olive green, dusty teal/soft turquoise, warm navy, terracotta, peachy coral and soft plum.

It’s recommended that I avoid: icy pastels, stark white (boo!), black and bright/neon colors.

I think I tend to agree with these suggestions and definitely don’t think black suits me well since my hair is brunette now.

It was fun to try these different colored dress dresses on and see how they looked. I was surprised at the colors I gravitated towards.

I was very smitten with this pink dress! It’s got an asymmetric one shoulder, fitted to the hips with flattering ruching. The skirt has beautiful, flowy movement.

April Intentions: What I’m Focusing on This Month

Hi friend! Welcome to April! I feel like March was a looong month, but here in Houston, it’s definitely feeling like spring and especially now that the time changed and our evenings are longer.

Today, we’re bringing back the Monthly Intentions post where I share what I’m focusing on this month. There’s something grounding about taking a step back at the beginning of a new month and asking yourself, what actually matters most right now?

Everything can feel important and I know we’re all juggling work, family, health, home, and relationships. So, these monthly intentions posts are a way of simplifying things and narrowing it down to reduce the overwhelm and prioritize the most important.

If you haven’t done this in a while, take 5 minutes today and ask yourself: What actually matters most for me this month? If too many things come to mind, you can prioritize and pick the top 2 or 3.

My April Intentions

1. Showing Up Fully for My Health Coaching Clients

This is a big one for me right now. Stepping into health coaching aligns perfectly with where I am in life. I truly want to provide real value to every single person who trusts me to help guide them.

That means being present, thoughtful, and intentional with each client and listening, supporting, and helping them build something sustainable. It’s meaningful work, and I want to show up for it in the best way I can.

I’ve blocked out Thursdays for client calls and check-ins and am now opening up a few spots on Wednesdays too.

As far as what I’m offering, here’s a mini breakdown:

8-12 Week Coaching Program: Real Change That Lasts

From there, we move into goal setting and building a personalized action plan that actually fits your life.

2. Locking In on My Cut

After spending months in a lean build, I’m ready for this “cut” phase. I’m focused, committed, and excited to see the results of all the work I’ve put in. There are lots of components to this goal, but I’ve gotten into a good rhythm with it, so it’s all doable. (And also why the weekly planning is so important!)

Hitting my macro targets
4 weight lifting sessions/week
4 MISS cardio sessions/week + 1 HIT session (or a spin class in place of 2 MISS)
10k steps a day
Drinking 100 oz water a day
Getting 8 hours of sleep a night

I know how easy it is to get distracted or lose focus, but this month I really want to stay locked in and follow through. I am trusting the process and looking forward to seeing results! You can read all the details about my Week 1 results here.

3. Being Intentional with My Time at Home

This one is the most important. My son is in full teen mode. He driving, he’s independent, and naturally spending more time in his room or out with friends. I know that’s all a natural and healthy part of this stage of life, but it makes me even more aware of how quickly this time goes.

Which makes me thankful for all the little moments in between. The quick conversations, check-ins, and everyday connection. This is where just paying full attention matters so much- being mindful not to be looking at my phone while my kids are talking to me. Simple things like that.

We’ve started prioritizing Friday night family dinners and I really want to protect that time. It’s cool that after dinner, the kids will usually stick around and play cards with us. It’s my favorite thing to see everyone laughing and having fun together.

With my daughter being 10 years old, she still loves to spend time with me. #thankGod! After school, play outside together almost every day. She’s an athlete and most happy with a ball in her hand so we play basketball, throw the football, play two square, and sometimes even swim now that the weather is starting to heat up. I don’t love playing sports, but I love being with her in her element.

At night, before bed, we’ve been spending a few minutes playing Head’s Up – the app on your phone. It’s such a fun game – we laugh so hard! She loves to play the “food fight” card if you’re looking for an easy one for younger kids.

Elliott and I also have a couple of weekends alone this month, which I’m really looking forward to. The hard part about being divorced is that you have to split your time with the kids. I really try to just accept that and take advantage of those days alone – especially when it comes to connecting with Elliott. We both miss our kids terribly when they’re with the other parent, but it does give us an opportunity to connect with each other.

We’ve also been going to church regularly, which has become an important part of our routine. In my morning quiet time, I’ve been incorporating more daily devotionals into the start of my day.

I’m going into April feeling focused and excited for what’s ahead. There’s a lot I’m working toward, and I just want to be present for it all.

Where Should We Honeymoon?!

Hi friend! I hope you’re having a great week! Today, I thought we could talk about wedding planning and specifically, get your ideas on honeymoon destinations!

Where Should We Honeymoon?

I’m so glad we finally have a wedding date and venue selected (I shared all the details in this post).

We’ve sent out Save the Dates and I asked Ali-Shaun to be my maid of honor and she agreed! I’m so thankful to have her by my side! And she happens to be a phenomenal event planner!

One of Elliott’s best friends is an ordained minister and he’s going to officiate the ceremony. it will be so special to have someone close to us marry us. Sean has a great personality and will definitely make it memorable.

And . . . that’s about all that’s been decided so far!

I still need a dress . . . but what’s more on my mind lately is where we’ll get to honeymoon. I’m so excited to marry Elliott and we’re thinking that we’ll go on a honeymoon shortly after the wedding – so it will be early November.

We want a honeymoon that is meaningful, something that feels like a true exhale after months of planning and a really special way to start this part of our lives together.

So naturally, we’ve been going down the rabbit hole of “where should we honeymoon?” and have been Greece on the top of our list.

Neither of us have ever been there and it’s been somewhere I’ve wanted to go for ages. Mediterranean food is my favorite and I’d love to get eat my way through Greece. Also, it looks like such a stunning place with all the white buildings and blue water. It feels romantic without trying too hard.

After a busy season of life, we’re not looking for a packed itinerary. We’d prefer a mix of beautiful views, amazing food, walkable little towns and time to relax and just be.

Other Popular Honeymoon Destinations (And Why Couples Love Them)

Having said that, we haven’t ruled out other places. Here are a few more ideas and the main attractions when I was researching online:

Italy – Romance, incredible food, and a mix of experiences from the Amalfi Coast to Tuscany. Perfect if you want culture + scenery + amazing meals.

Maldives – Overwater bungalows, crystal-clear water, and total privacy. Ideal for a true “escape from everything” honeymoon.

France – Paris for romance, the South of France for coastal charm. It’s timeless, elegant, and perfect for a mix of city + relaxation.

Hawaii – Easy travel (especially from the U.S.), beautiful beaches, hiking, and great food. A balance of adventure and relaxation. My grandma Nola lived in Hawaii and I was lucky enough to spend time with her in the summers when I was a kid. And, fun fact: when I worked at Hooters in college, I got to go to the Hula Bowl in Hawaii with some of the team! I’d like to go back with the whole family, so I don’t think it will be our honeymoon spot.

Mexico – Close, convenient, and often more affordable. All-inclusive resorts make it easy to truly unwind. We got engaged at the Coral Excellence in Playa Mujeres and that was an amazing trip!

Argentina – One of Elliott’s colleagues recommended this one. A more unique option- think Buenos Aires culture, Patagonia landscapes, and incredible wine country. Great for couples who want something a little different and adventurous.

Bali – Lush scenery, private villas, and a mix of relaxation and spiritual/intentional travel. Often more budget-friendly for luxury.

St. Lucia – Known for its dramatic mountains (the Pitons) and romantic resorts. A favorite for couples wanting something tropical but elevated.

I was listening to something but I can’t remember what – and heard Africa is a great honeymoon destination.

South Africa – One of the most popular choices because you can do a little bit of everything- safari, wine country, and beautiful coastal views. It feels adventurous but still very accessible.

Kenya – Known for iconic safaris and incredible wildlife. If seeing animals in their natural habitat is on your bucket list, this is hard to beat.

Tanzania – Home to the Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro, plus you can pair it with a relaxing beach stay in Zanzibar. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

Morocco – A completely different vibe – colorful markets, beautiful architecture, and unique desert experiences. Great if you want something cultural and visually stunning.

Cut Phase Week 1: I Already Feel Leaner (Here’s Exactly What I’m Doing)

Hi friend! Welcome to a fresh, new week! After spending the past nine months in a lean build focused on building muscle, I officially started my cut! A cut phase is where all the work you’ve put into building muscle starts to show. It’s the phase where you intentionally create a calorie deficit so your body taps into stored fat for energy while doing everything you can to maintain the muscle you’ve built.

I’ve been really ready for this phase, which you may have read about here. There’s something motivating about shifting into a phase where you get to see the results of all that hard work start to come through.

I just finished week 1 and wanted to share exactly what I changed, what I’m doing now, and how it’s going so far.

What My Macros Look Like Now

In a cut, you’re eating slightly less than your body needs to maintain its current weight. This deficit is what drives fat loss. But the key is not to drastically slash calories. You still need enough fuel to : 1) support your workouts, 2) maintain muscle and, 3) keep your energy, mood and hormones in a good place.

At the end of my build, I was eating in a calorie surplus with one high carb day:

Previous (Build Phase)

2,370 calories
300g carbs
135g protein
70g fat

High Carb Day

2,445 calories
340g carbs
125g protein
65g fat

For this cut, my calories and macros lowered and there’s no more high carb day:

Cut (Week 1)

Calories: 2,125
Carbs: 250g
Protein: 135g
Fat: 65g

It’s still plenty of food for me and I don’t feel like I’m starving. I’m actually still eating the pretty much the same foods, just less carbs and fat. You can check out this what I eat in a day post for more detailed info. It also explains why I eat many of the same things on repeat and don’t get tired of it.

Training + Cardio Changes

My strength training is staying the same. I’m still lifting four days a week but have added in more intentional cardio.

I’m now doing four MISS sessions (moderate intensity steady state) for 20 minutes each and one 20-minute HIIT session. I was worried about this part just because it’s more time training and it’s already a lot of time to be in the gym with a busy schedule.

BUT, I’ve found that it’s doable. I’ve been walking at home in the morning before school drop off. Then, when I get to the gym, I do my weight training and MISS cardio.

I also have some flexibility built in, which is great. I can swap a spin class in place of the HIIT session or even use spin for two of the MISS sessions. This past week I did a spin class for the first time in ages and it was so fun. I’m going to do another one next week!

I’m still hitting 10,000 steps a day, drinking about 100 ounces of water, and staying consistent with my strength training.

Week 1 Results

I started the week at 113.6 pounds, and my first check-in came in at 111.2.

I know not all of that is fat loss, there’s always some water shift when calories drop and I was on my cycle when I started. But, it still feels really encouraging to see the scale move. More importantly, I already feel a little leaner, less puffy, and more dialed in overall. Mentally, I feel so good being in this cut phase!

And, when I look at the big picture, I’m so impressed with my results. This is why taking progress photos can be important – so you can see the changes that are almost imperceptible on the day-to-day.

I think it’s so wild to see how the scale is higher on the high, but my body is more muscular and leaner than the left.

How I’m Feeling So Far

So far, I’m LOVING being in this cut! It feels like a smooth transition. I’m not starving, I still have energy for my workouts, and I feel motivated.

What I’m Most Excited About

This is the part I’ve been looking forward to. After months of focusing on building muscle, this is where everything starts to come together. I’m so excited to see more definition, reveal the muscle I’ve been working so hard to build, and continue tightening things up week by week.

I think a lot of women either skip this phase or rush it, but a proper cut done gradually and intentionally is what allows you to actually see the results of your strength training. It’s not about getting smaller, it’s about getting more defined, strong, and confident.

This is just week one, but I’ll keep sharing updates as I go as long as you want to see them.

Updated Closet Tour | Making Room for Two

Updated Closet Tour | Making Room for Two

The two month countdown is on until Elliott moves in full time!

He’s been slowly bringing more and more things over and says that now, when he’s at his townhouse he feels like he’s visiting there and feels at home with us here. Love that! And he has his own office and the garage is also his domain. Along with the landscaping and pool upkeep! This man does so much!

Of course, him being here full time means I need to make room for his things in our shared closet. Not that it’s a big ask – the closet is plenty big enough for both of us. I just had to do some decluttering and rearranging. I love this kind of thing and wanted to share where we’re at so far with it!

Similar Table

The closet is a big walk-in style with lots of vertical space I don’t even use. Those bags on the top shelf can be moved to our downstairs hall closet since they’re mostly for travel and pool days.

The pull down hanging bars over the dresser will be where Elliott will hang his suits that he wears less frequently. He works from home also and is in the travel industry. Luckily, he can reach that bar easily whereas I have to get on my tippee toes.

As of now, Elliott has both the top dresser drawers and one lower drawer. I take up the rest with my intimates, pajamas, workout clothes, shorts and belts. Luckily, we have more drawer space in our nightstands.

We’ve made the left side of the closet “his side” and so far he’s just got a handful of shirts, jeans and shoes. This man likes his boots and has a collection, so we’ll see how those all fit. . .

Continuing to the left, I had all my jewelry on that blank shelf and back wall, but he helped me move everything to the other side. Now, he can add more of his hanging clothes there.

On the bar are all of my Amazon jeans, pants and skirts. I found clear kids hangers at The Container Store and love how minimal and clean they look here.

Beyond that are my dresses. This is the only space where we can hang long things. The basket is for our dirty clothes and the folding ladder is for when I need to reach the tall shelves.

And all the shoes! It sounds crazy, but I do try to limit my collection.

Bag Dividers

On the opposite side are the rest of my jeans with labels by brand so I can easily find them. It helps when I’m sharing things for work.

Below the jeans are my bags, separated by clear dividers to keep them upright and separated.

Here is where my jewelry was relocated. I like to have everything where I can see it.

The jewelry box is an Amazon find and I like it for organizing my rings and earrings I reach for often, plus watches and seasonal earrings in the drawers.

And I also have two earring stands with several little decorative bowls holding jewelry I reach for often.

I especially love the acrylic necklace holder. You can attach it to your wall with the adhesive strip it comes with or with screws. I chose to use the screws. I like how it keeps your necklaces easily accessible and tangle free.

I have a few more bags hanging and then my tops take up two bars. They’re organized by weight and color, with the very end being all my Amazon clothes – which is helpful when I’m sharing things for my blog.

My hangers are from California Closets but sadly, I can’t find them online. I love how thin these space saving hangers are, but they’re not velvet, so they don’t get dirty with fuzz and lint.

I like using these acrylic dividers to separate my folded sweaters, but since it’s getting warmer here, my sweaters and warmer weather clothing are in the white bins on the top shelf. I added the above older picture so you could see.

Monogram Hook

A feature that I quickly got spoiled by is that the lights turn on automatically when you walk into the closet. It’s insanely satisfying to not have to reach for the light switch!

To make more room in the closet dresser, I moved my swimsuits and coverups to the drawers in my nightstand dresser.

I got lucky that the organizing bins fit perfectly in here!

I’m so excited for Elliott to be here all the time. I miss him so much when he’s gone – he’s such a soothing presence in my life. And, he’s been my biggest cheerleader while I’ve studied to become a health coach and taken on my first few clients. Only 225 days ’til we get married!!

This pan is similar to the cult favorite Always Pan, but bigger so I like to cook large, one-pot meals in it. I’ve had it for many years and it’s held up great. I hand wash it.

A while ago I did a bedroom update. I layered the oversized Duvet Cover in color “02-Linen” – a perfectly neutral “greige”. It’s also soft and billowy with the oversized Down Comforter. Elliott thinks it’s on the heavy side, but I love it.

I think the oversized duvet really compliments my bed frame and makes the room feel so serene and cozy. No more “too short” bedding!

Hi friend! I hope your week is going great! I’ve packed a lot into this week, but I’m staying on track with my planner that we filled out last Sunday! I’ll be live again this Sunday if you want to plan your week with me!

Today’s style post is all from J.Crew Factory and I found a great pair of jean shorts in a perfect mid length, along with easy breezy linen pants, mix and match tops, swimsuits and a darling cover up! Let’s go!

Size Reference: I’m petite, weighing about 111 lbs, my true size is XS or 0P.

These jean shorts are great, just what I was looking for. They’re a little longer of an inseam, but are cute and comfy to run around in. I think I will live in these all summer long!

J.Crew and J.Crew Factory make such great basics. Their tees are great quality – this one is 100% cotton, feels great on, and comes in several colors.

Here is another tee, but in a v-neck style. I think the kelly green is so pretty!

I’m such a fan of these lightweight breezy sweaters and this is a fan favorite – the Beach Sweater. It’s lightweight and perfect for spring and even breezy summer nights.

I also tried a few styles of linen pants. These have an elastic waistband, functional drawstring and pockets. I really like the thin stripe detail on this pair.

These are the white version of the previous pair of linen pants. Such a classic style!

I paired them with an easy breezy, relaxed button down. You cannot go wrong with a top like this – so many ways to button, tuck and style it!

I also paired those linen pants with this navy striped tank. It’s regular bra friendly with a high neckline, and minimal, chic style.

Since the top is shorter and more of the pants are showing, I noticed the pockets a bit more. I didn’t notice that in the striped pattern or darker colors.

I think the linen pants in this vibrant red is so fun and playful!

I paired them with this button up vest top. I like the swooping hemline at the bottom, it feels very feminine and flattering. I left the top buttons undone because it was snug on me, but it does button all the way up.

These pants remind me of a chino, but even better! They have a patch front pocket, fitted in the waist and leg then flare out. Perfect if you’re looking for good pant alternative to jeans or traditional slacks.

I paired them with this denim top that has a notch collar and v-neck. It looks polished worn tucked or untucked.

Talk about a comfy dress! It’s stretchy, not too short, regular bra friendly and lightweight. I really like the black and white stripe detail.

It’s the perfect blank canvas for more layering with a jean jacket or cardigan. Here I styled it with this fun floral silky scarf.

JCrew Factory has great, high quality swimwear too! I really love the print on this swimsuit. It has a comfortable ruching around the waist and the one shoulder stays comfortably put.

All of the swimsuits have removable padded cups as well.

I really like this brown one piece. So classy! I think the brown looks a little softer than a traditional black.

The white floral detail so pretty on this swimsuit bright pink swimsuit. It’s bandeau style with a removable halter style strap. It also has that flattering ruching in the tummy.

I’m smitten with this crochet cover up! The collar makes it feels a little dressier and the side slits make it easy to move in.
