Cut Phase : Weeks 4 & 5

After spending the past nine months in a lean build focused on building muscle, I officially started my cut three weeks ago! A cut phase is where all the work you’ve put into building muscle starts to show. It’s the phase where you intentionally create a calorie deficit so your body taps into stored fat for energy while doing everything you can to maintain the muscle you’ve built.

I’ve been really ready for this phase, which you may have read about here.

What My Macros Look Like Now

In a cut, you’re eating slightly less than your body needs to maintain its current weight. This deficit is what drives fat loss. But the key is not to drastically slash calories. You still need enough fuel to : 1) support your workouts, 2) maintain muscle and, 3) keep your energy, mood and hormones in a good place.

At the end of my build, I was eating in a calorie surplus with one high carb day:

Previous (Build Phase)

• 2,370 calories
• 300g carbs
• 135g protein
• 70g fat

High Carb Day

• 2,445 calories
• 340g carbs
• 125g protein
• 65g fat

For this cut, my calories and macros lowered and there’s no more high carb day:

Cut (Week 1 & 2)

• Calories: 2,125
• Carbs: 250g
• Protein: 135g
• Fat: 65g

Cut (Week 3)

• Calories: 1,935
• Carbs: 225g
• Protein: 135g
• Fat: 55g

Cut (Weeks 4 & 5)

• Calories: 1,790
• Carbs: 200g
• Protein: 135g
• Fat: 50g

It’s still plenty of food for me and I feel satisfied. I’m actually still eating the pretty much the same foods, just less carbs and fat. You can check out this what I eat in a day post for more detailed info. It also explains why I eat many of the same things on repeat and don’t get tired of it.

Training + Cardio Changes

My strength training is staying the same. I’m still lifting four days a week and I detailed those workouts for you here.

For weeks 3 & 4, I did three MISS sessions (moderate intensity steady state) for 25 minutes each and one 20-minute HIIT session. That’s an

I’m still aiming for 10,000 steps a day, drinking about 100 ounces of water, and staying consistent with my strength training.

I keep a written log of everything and I love being able to look back at my progress over the months.

Week 3-4 Results

I started week 4 at 112.2 lbs and ended week 5 at 110.4.

I’ve been sticking very closely to my calories and macros. One day we went out to eat for lunch at a Mexican restaurant and I tried my best to order what would fit my macros the best. When I was choosing what to eat, I logged different things in MyFitnessPal and was shocked at how high calories and macros are on most things.

I ended up ordering the grilled redfish and it was really good!

I also had two birthday parties to attend and chose to eat at home and not indulge so I could stay on track. I’m glad I made those choices because it just wasn’t worth it to me. I’ve been working so hard for over a year and now is the time to really lock in and reveal that hard work!

No cupcakes for me . . .

and no alcohol. It’s not hard for me to avoid drinking since I don’t really like how it makes me feel.

But dessert? That’s what I’d prefer over wine. No cake for me right now although I LOVE chocolate and this one looked pretty good!

Check-In Photos

I like to share where I started compared to now. It’s really incredible how we can transform our bodies over time. But, the changes are small in the day-to-day and that’s why I encourage you to take progress photos of your own fitness journey. So you can look back and amaze yourself.

I also think it’s wild that my weight is nearly the same in both photos, it’s just my body composition has changed.

Pro Tip : Prep in Advance

One thing that really helps set each day up for success is planning the night before. That way, I’m not scrambling the next day to figure out what to eat and how it’s going to fit into my plan.

Every evening, my daughter and I play outside together, usually before dinner. We come inside and eat dinner around 6:30. By 7:30, I’m back in the kitchen tidying up, filling my water for the next day and looking over my meal plan – prepping anything that I want to have ready for the next day.

By 8:00 p.m., I’m wiped for the day! I like to end the night watching a little t.v., sometimes with a decaf coffee as a wind down treat. I’m usually helping getting my daughter get ready for bed by 8:30 and in bed by 9:00 p.m.

But, I wake up (usually before) my lights come on at 5:00 a.m.

Locking In

I’m really seeing the consistency pay off now. It’s the boring daily grind that multiplies over time and I really think that Week 6 is where the magic happens in that you really start to see a change after being at it for 6 weeks.

We have Ali-Shaun’s couples birthday party this Friday and a pool party on Saturday and I’m so looking forward to hanging out with everyone. But, I’ll still stick to my plan while enjoying everyone’s company. I still haven’t decided if I’ll have a drink or not, I can fit it in my macros so I’ll just see how I feel when the time comes.

I just unboxed and steamed the clothes and plan to try on today so I can share everything with you on Friday!

Today, I’m rounding up some of my favorite Amazon spring outfits under $50 that I’ve worn over the years and I’d still wear today.

Amazon Jeans & Pants Under $50

Size Reference: I’m petite, almost 5’1, weighing 1101 lbs. My true size in tops and dresses is XS or XSP and my jeans/pants size is 0P/25P.

Now that spring is upon us, I am loving all things eyelet! I found this super cute top that ties in the front, so it’s almost like a cardigan. You’ll want to wear a tank underneath, but the eyelet detail is just precious and even the crochet detail at the chest is such a fun little detail.

I’m wearing it with these high waisted jeans that fit and flat are so well. They have a high waist, no pockets or added bulk in the front/hip area and then they flare out to a slightly wider leg with a raw edge hem. They also have some stretch, so they’re comfortable.

For a pop of color, I found this orange eyelet top. It has three-quarter length sleeves with elasticized wrists and petite front buttons. It’s on the more casual side since it’s collarless.

These white jeans are by Levi’s, a go-to for spring.

This green tank is such a pretty color and on the shorter side, although it’s not belly baring with a high waisted pair of pants.

I really like these lightweight linen floaty pants, but they were way too long on me, even though I’m wearing a wedge. If you are taller, give them a try, I think they are a great style and can be also worn as a swim cover-up.

Really loving this dress for a nice dinner out on vacay. It’s a bandeau style with a sticky grippers at the top to help keep it in place and then it’s rushed along both sides with a little side slit that makes it easier to walk in.

I think the watercolor/floral print is really pretty.

This colorful sundress will also be coming with me to Mexico! It has adjustable shoulder straps, pockets, and I just thought the mix of colors and florals was so vibrant and fun. Kind of reminds me of Marimekko.

This little sundress is also a cute option. It’s a strapless style with a smocked bodice, and then a simple skirt hitting me just below the knee, so not too short.

It would be easy to throw on over a swimsuit or you could add a cardigan or jean jacket on top.

I felt like if this jumpsuit fit me a little better it would be a winner! It’s got a fun smocked bodice, and then wide Palazzo pants with pockets.

It’s definitely giving cool boho vibes, but it seemed like the pants were sewn a little bit funky at the waist.

I’m CRAZY for this little romper dress. I’m wearing it right now while I type this up! It’s a dress with a bodysuit you step into underneath. And I just added a white tank.

It’s incredibly soft and comfortable. It looks like Free People, but not as oversized as that brand tends to be.

I got this romper dress in gray and was so crazy about it that I bought it in another color. This pink is so fun for summer.  It’s incredibly comfortable with a lot of stretch and I can see wearing it all summer long on hot, casual days.

This athletic dress is both comfortable and functional. It has a built-in shelf bra and bike shorts that are not attached, so you can actually pull them down to use the restroom.

And here are my newest pair of athletic shorts that I’ve already been wearing on repeat. These have a comfortable high waist, ultra lightweight and fully lined. The blue is so pretty, but they come in a rainbow of colors.

I also got a few new tops to wear over my sports bras when I work out. This style is a tank with larger arm holes and then a cute little keyhole tie side. It’s super lightweight, so you won’t get too hot while wearing it during workouts.

The next style is a crop, elbow length T-shirt. Again, super soft and stretchy, and you can wear it with both shorts and leggings.

If you prefer a more traditional style tee, but want it in an activewear fabric, this one is for you. It has a higher V-neck and short sleeves, plus a shirttail him. It’s got plenty of stretch too.

As for activewear, these are my favorite CRZ leggings in a bright cobalt blue and I got this new activewear tank. That’s cute from the front, but especially from behind!

These are the CRZ bike shorts. I often wear when working out because I tend to get hot in the summer. These have a 4 inch in seam and high waist. The top is so lightweight and stretchy, with exposed stitching and an open back.

How It Started

In January 2025, right before my 50th birthday, I committed to walking 30 minutes a day. In the beginning, my goal was simply to walk for 30 minutes each morning. Life is so full and busy, and I knew if I didn’t do it first thing, it might not happen. So, I created a routine where I would walk in the morning before the day got going.

Most days I used my foldable treadmill from Amazon, which made it much easier to stay consistent. I didn’t have to drive to the gym or worry about weather. I could just hop on and walk.

Some mornings I would watch a show or listen to a podcast, but often I just used that time to wake up slowly and move my body.

Treadmill 

I usually walk at a 3.5 pace/incline 3 and I can answer DMS or emails while I’m walking or watch a video. Having something to do helps pass the time and it’s like double bang for the buck.

And, to remove any resistance to walking, I’ll often leave my sneakers and socks (code HONEY25 for 25% off) right by the treadmill with my airpods and ipad.

These seem like little steps, but they all add up! Less excuses!

I walked every.single.day for 30 minutes from January 1, 2025 all the way to mid March 2025 when I missed one day. It was the day we woke up at the crack of dawn to drive home from Florida and it took so long that by the time we got home, I was beat, hungry and just needed to chill.

But, I continued walking after that! If you commit to something and fall off track, just start again the next day. Don’t let it get you down and sabotage all your progress and efforts.

When My Goal Became 10,000 Steps

At the end of June 2025, I hired a coach to help me with my lean build goal. One of the habits she asked me to focus on was walking 10,000 steps a day.

Instead of just walking for 30 minutes, I began paying attention to my total daily movement.

I started looking for more opportunities to walk throughout my day.

• Taking a quick walk outside
• Walking while on phone calls
• Parking a little farther away
• Getting up and moving instead of sitting
• And playing outside with my daughter

I still use my treadmill regularly, but I also love getting outside whenever I can. Walking outside has become one of my favorite ways to clear my mind and step away from screens. Whenever I get outside for a fresh air walk, I always come back feeling refreshed.

How I Track My Steps

I track my steps using my Apple Watch, which makes it easy to see where I am throughout the day. I find that it takes a dedicated 30-45 minute walk to get 10,000 steps a day, depending on how active I am throughout the day. Lots of times I end up with around 12,000 steps.

But, if I notice I’m a little short on steps in the evening, I’ll simply take a quick walk to finish out my steps. I’ve literally been known to jump on the treadmill in my pajamas for 5 minutes if I need to get a few more steps in!

The Benefits of Walking Every Day

Walking may not seem like much, but it’s one of the most underrated habits for health and longevity. Here are some of the benefits I’ve experienced:

• Walking helps increase daily calorie burn without putting stress on your joints or wearing you out.
• It’s one of the easiest ways to stay active consistently.
• Some of my best ideas happen when I’m walking. Often, I’ll dictate entire blog posts into the notes app on my phone while I’m walking.
• Stepping away from screens and being outside helps clear my mind and reduce stress.
• Ironically, moving more actually makes you feel more energized, not less.
• Unlike intense workouts, walking is something you can do every single day for the rest of your life.
• Action precedes motivation. If I’m tired at the end of the day and have more things I need to do, if I do a quick walk, I get more energized and motivated to do other things.

How to Get Started Walking More

If you’re thinking about adding more walking into your routine, my biggest advice is this:

• Start simple. You don’t need to hit 10,000 steps right away.
• Start with just 10 minutes a day. Make it manageable and easy so you stay consistent.
• Walk first thing in the morning. Getting it done early removes the “I’ll do it later” problem.
• Track your steps – A fitness tracker or smartwatch can be really motivating.
• Look for small opportunities – Take the stairs, park farther away, or go for a quick walk after dinner. All of those little steps add up!

The Habit That Stuck

After over a full year of walking 10,000 steps a day, it’s no longer something I have to think about. It’s just part of my routine. When something becomes automatic, it feels less like effort and simply becomes part of your lifestyle.

And Elliott often walks with me. We always walk on weekend mornings and sometimes in the evening too. I love our conversations that we have while walking. Even if things are tense, it seems that walking eases our stresses and helps us connect again.

If you’re looking for a place to start with your health, walking is one of the best habits you can build. And habits tend to build on habits, so it’s a GREAT first step to take!

Several people have sent DMs lately asking if I got hair extensions again. Fair question since I have let my hair grow out and it’s getting quite long. I do not have extensions and I doubt I ever will get them again.

I’ve been getting regular trims and I did use the full bottle of Nutrafol, but I’ll be honest, I’m not sure it did anything. It’s so hard to tell . . .

I’m also using K18, and in full transparency, they brand sent it to me. It’s a molecular leave-in mask that you apply to your wet, towel dried hair after shampooing. You don’t use conditioner on the day you apply it and only use 1-4 pumps. I’ve been using it after every shampoo and my hair seems to like it.

Swimsuits & Coverups

Today, I’m sharing swim styles – a mix of one-piece swimsuits, bikinis and coverups. Most of these are from Amazon, but I did get a made-to-order bikini from my long-time friend and swimwear designer, Karen Martin.

Karen has been designing and sewing swimsuits for over 20 years and she’s so talented!

I asked her to make me a swimsuit for a pool party Elliott and I are going to in a couple of weeks. When you order with Karen, you get to choose the fabric (she has tons!) and the style.

I let my daughter pick my color and it’s called Peacock Shimmer.

I got the “Tri Top” and “Loop Tie Side Brazil” which is a low rise style. I’ll also be ordering a “Tiny Brazil” bottom that sits higher on the hips without ties so I can mix and match. I also love how she lined the suit in that bright yellow – so fun!

I got hooked on the Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso and figured out how to make it at home!

It’s a delicious sweet treat and I make it with decaf espresso if I’m going to have it in the afternoon so it doesn’t interfere with my sleep!

Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso 

• One shot espresso
• 1 tblsp brown sugar syrup 
• 1 cup Oatly Oay Milk
• Ice
• Shake & Enjoy! 

Brown Sugar Syrup :

• Boil half cup of water and one cup of brown sugar, let simmer five minutes 
• Add dash of cinnamon and splash of vanilla 
• Stored in the fridge up to a week (I keep it in a mason jar)

Cut Phase : Weeks 2 & 3

After spending the past nine months in a lean build focused on building muscle, I officially started my cut three weeks ago! A cut phase is where all the work you’ve put into building muscle starts to show. It’s the phase where you intentionally create a calorie deficit so your body taps into stored fat for energy while doing everything you can to maintain the muscle you’ve built.

I’ve been really ready for this phase, which you may have read about here.

I shared my Week 1 results here and today, I’m recapping Weeks 2 and 3.

What My Macros Look Like Now

In a cut, you’re eating slightly less than your body needs to maintain its current weight. This deficit is what drives fat loss. But the key is not to drastically slash calories. You still need enough fuel to : 1) support your workouts, 2) maintain muscle and, 3) keep your energy, mood and hormones in a good place.

At the end of my build, I was eating in a calorie surplus with one high carb day:

Previous (Build Phase)

• 2,370 calories
• 300g carbs
• 135g protein
• 70g fat

High Carb Day

• 2,445 calories
• 340g carbs
• 125g protein
• 65g fat

For this cut, my calories and macros lowered and there’s no more high carb day:

Cut (Week 1)

• Calories: 2,125
• Carbs: 250g
• Protein: 135g
• Fat: 65g

Cut (Week 2)

• Calories: 1,935
• Carbs: 225g
• Protein: 135g
• Fat: 55g

Cut (Week 3)

• Calories: 1,790
• Carbs: 200g
• Protein: 135g
• Fat: 50g

It’s still plenty of food for me and I don’t feel like I’m starving. I’m actually still eating the pretty much the same foods, just less carbs and fat. You can check out this what I eat in a day post for more detailed info. It also explains why I eat many of the same things on repeat and don’t get tired of it.

Training + Cardio Changes

My strength training is staying the same. I’m still lifting four days a week and I detailed those workouts for you here.

For week 3, I did three MISS sessions (moderate intensity steady state) for 25 minutes each and one 20-minute HIIT session. Week 2 I did four MISS for 20 minutes, but switched it to three for 25 minutes so I wouldn’t have to go to the gym for another stairmaster session.

The cardio sessions are getting more doable in that I’m getting used to them and I just watch a video while I do it so that it’s more ‘enjoyable.’

I’m still aiming for 10,000 steps a day, drinking about 100 ounces of water, and staying consistent with my strength training. In week 3, I had three days in a row where I came close to 10k steps, but was a little shy. Usually, I’m over 10K steps.

I keep a written log of everything and I love being able to look back at my progress over the months.

Week 3 Results

I started the week at 112.6 pounds, and checked in at 112.2, so only a .4 lb reduction. It’s not the greatest, but you can see I ate Indian food at a restaurant on Saturday (so yummy!) but I went over my calories/macros and then was also on my period.

We were at an Indian restaurant and it was buffet style – I went back for seconds and also had a big piece of Naan bread. Meanwhile, back at home, Elliott and I binge watched Indian Matchmaker – fascinating!

Even one meal out at a restaurant usually causes my weight to go up for a few days and also when I’m on my period.

I try not to stress over these ups on the scale because I know that with staying consistent and on point the next week, especially with my water, I’ll likely see a drop again.

Week 1 | Week 3 – always have the sheet marks since I wake up and take this pics first thing in the morning!

Pro Tip : Prep in Advance

One thing that really helps set each day up for success is planning the night before. That way, I’m not scrambling the next day to figure out what to eat and how it’s going to fit into my plan.

Every evening, my daughter and I play outside together, usually before dinner. We come inside and eat dinner around 6:30. By 7:30, I’m back in the kitchen tidying up, filling my water for the next day and looking over my meal plan – prepping anything that I want to have ready for the next day.

By 8:00 p.m., I’m wiped for the day! I like to end the night watching a little t.v., sometimes with a decaf coffee as a wind down treat. I’m usually helping getting my daughter get ready for bed by 8:30 and in bed by 9:00 p.m.

But, I wake up (usually before) my lights come on at 5:00 a.m.

Locking In!

At the end of Week 3, I felt very determined to LOCK IN on Week 4! I’m so ready to see the scale drop after my lunch out and with being off my period. Which, by the way, I’m 51 and in perimenopause and had a cycle about two weeks prior to this one, so that was fun:/

When I committed to getting in the best shape possible in my 50s, I meant it and I’m continuing day after day to work on that. We have a pool party coming up May 2 and that’s a little extra motivation to stay tight on my plan for the next three weeks!
