I’m really excited to share today’s post with you, all about the physique changes that I made in the last year.

Last June, I hired a coach to help me reach my fitness goal of building lean muscle while staying relatively lean.

Before that, I successfully lost a good amount of body fat while maintaining and even gaining a bit of muscle. But, when I went into reverse mode to bring up calories, I started floundering and ended up gaining back some of the body fat I had initially lost.

So, I decided to hire a coach to help guide me with my calories and macros and almost as importantly, as a person to help hold me accountable week after week.

I was 50 years old and had never made a full commitment like this before. I was in the right headspace for it, meaning that I was really ready to go all in and commit for the long term – a fully year.

No more 6 weeks here, making progress, taking two steps back, and on and on.

I was ready to be patient and trust the process.

To find out exactly where I was starting, I scheduled a DEXA scan so I could get a true baseline of my body composition.

If you’re not familiar with a DEXA scan, it’s considered one of the most accurate ways to measure body composition. It tells you how much of your body is fat, lean muscle, bone mass, and even your visceral fat (the fat surrounding your organs). It’s much more informative than stepping on a regular scale.

I simply Googled to find a local DEXA location and found one about 10 minutes from my house. The DEXA scan cost about $100 and only takes 6 minutes. You simply lie down on the table with your clothes on while the machine scans your body. Then, it gives you all the results and the technician will review what the data means.

My initial DEXA scan results are below.

Then, for the next 9 months, I focused on building muscle so calories and macros increased, I strength training 5 days a week with progressive overload, walked 10k steps a day, drank 100 oz of water a day and aimed for 8 hours of sleep.

At the beginning of my muscle building phase I weighed 108.6 lbs and was eating around 1,440 calories a day.

At the end of my muscle building phase, I weighed 113.6 lbs was eating about 2,400 calories a day.

Then, I spent three months in a cut where I brought calories/macros down to lose some of the body fat I had gained during the build.

I took weekly progress photos so I knew my body had dramatically changed, but I wasn’t sure what the DEXA numbers would show. I was truly blown away when I found out.

When I looked at the comparison, one thing stood out immediately: the scale says I only lost a little over 3 pounds.

But, I lost 6.8 pounds of body fat while gaining 3.6 pounds of lean muscle!

And, I was at 16.5% body fat! I’ve never been that low body fat in my entire 51 years!

That just goes to show how long it takes to build muscle. If any of you are worried about getting “too bulky” lifting weights, that is wasted energy! It just won’t happen. You have to eat properly and train for months, if not years, to truly gain pounds of muscle.

And, if you focus only on body weight on the scale, you won’t necessarily be seeing the whole story.

I do have to say that when I look back at the last year and how I was able to recomp my body, I am proud of the hard work I put in. It’s not easy to show up day in and day out and of course there are ups and downs along the way. But, I stuck with it and I’m so glad I did!

And I’m glad that I have something to show for my efforts. I’m so glad I took progress photos because they really show the difference.

The Things I Did to Change My Body

I Hired a Coach

One of the best decisions I made was hiring my coach. Having someone take the guesswork out of my nutrition and training allowed me to stop second-guessing every decision. Instead of wondering if I was doing the right thing, I simply focused on executing the plan. Having that accountability partner was key for helping me stay on track.

I Tracked Macros

Before this past year, I thought I ate pretty healthy. But I wasn’t eating in a way that supported my specific goals.

I already knew how to track macros, but I wasn’t 100% sure how many calories and protein, carbohydrates, and fat my body actually needed.

I Prioritized Protein, Ate Plenty of Carbs & Healthy Fats

If there’s one nutrition habit that made the biggest difference, it was increasing my protein intake. Getting enough protein helped me recover from my workouts, preserve muscle while losing fat, and ultimately build lean muscle over time.

Now I build every meal around protein first and I’ve eaten at least 125 grams of protein every day!

I also didn’t fear carbs. In fact, I ate more and more carbs as my build went on, ending up with about 290 grams a carbs a day. Wayyyy more than the 100 grams of carbs I used to eat back in the day.

And I always kept my fat grams at around 25% of my total calories.

I Focused on Strength Training

Instead of chasing calories burned, I focused on getting stronger.

I lifted weights five days a week and worked toward progressive overload, gradually increasing the weight or reps over time. You can see my exact workout plan here.

I planned my workouts every week and scheduled them in like an appointment with myself.

If you want to commit to working out, look at your schedule and figure out when you can make it happen and do it!

I Walked Almost Every Day

One habit that has stayed incredibly consistent is walking.

I aim for around 10,000 steps a day, and I truly believe that daily movement has been a huge contributor to my overall health and fat loss. Not only does it contribute to my daily calorie burn, it puts me in a great mood.

Now that it’s summer and we don’t have to rush out the door for school, I’ve been starting my day with a 30-minute outdoor walk. I absolutely LOVE getting outside and walking my unique neighborhood. It’s early in the day, not so hot and seeing other people out and about walking energizes me.

What’s Next?

After being in a cut for 13 weeks, I felt ready to reverse – meaning slowly increasing my calories while working to maintain the physique I’ve built.

I could have stayed in the cut longer to get even more lean (I was curious what that would look like), but while it’s summer, I was ready to prioritize enjoying more meals out and little treats with my family. When you are on strict eating plan, it can affect those around you and I wanted a bit more flexibility right now.

My Weekly Vlog

For so many years, I thought success meant I had to eat less and less. Now I know the goal is to have a healthy metabolism, build and maintain muscle, and create habits that I can sustain for the rest of my life.

At 51 years old, I feel stronger than I did in my 40s. I have more muscle, less body fat, and a much better understanding of how to fuel my body than I ever have before.

And, according to my DEXA scan, I’m only 35! I told Elliott he’s marrying a MUCH younger woman – ha! My Superpower age is 41, but I’m still digesting all those results.

It’s Not Too Late For You

The most important thing I’ve learned during this journey is that if I can change my body in my 50s, you can too!

It’s easy to think that it’s too late for us as we enter this phase of our life, but that’s not true! In our 40s and 50s and beyond, we have LIFE experience, know more of who we are, and STILL HAVE PLENTY OF TIME to build and live in our dream bodies!

Through consistent strength training, eating enough protein, learning how to fuel your body, and sticking with it long enough to let the results happen, it WILL happen! And the good news, the time will pass anyway!

During this process I realized that my true passion is to help women in their 40s and beyond change their physiques so that they can feel confident, strong and passionate about life.

I became a certified health coach and offer personalized macro coaching sessions. For me, as a pretty driven and disciplined person, it was still critical for my success that I had a coach to check in with. There were so many times that I knew “I would not be eating this or doing this walk” but I knew I had a check-in coming up each week. That accountability kept me on track and making progress week to week.

Now that the new month is here, I’m sharing my intentions for this month. And, during summer especially, I’m learning to have only a couple of things to focus on.

These kinds of posts are more meaningful to me and I hope it helps you to take a step back at the beginning of a new month and ask yourself, what actually matters most right now?

Everything can feel important and I know we’re all juggling work, family, health, home, and relationships. So, these monthly intentions posts are a way of simplifying things and narrowing it down to reduce the overwhelm and prioritize the most important.

Reviewing My JUNE Intentions

Let’s take a look back at my June Intentions and see how I did with those. This helps me be mindful moving forward.

Last month, I wanted to give myself (and our family) grace and I think we’re doing really well with that. I got back into a “new” morning routine that includes a good 30-minute walk outside after my morning coffee and quiet time and I’m loving that! It’s calm outside and not so hot and it’s just a great way to start the day.

We also did our “just us” trip to Fredericksburg for Elliott’s birthday, and not documenting it was a great way to simply connect and be together.

My JULY Intentions

Summer has a way of reminding me how quickly time passes. Before I know it, school will be starting again, routines will get busier, and we’ll be counting down to our November wedding and the holidays.

I don’t want to rush through this season.

Especially when my kids are with me, I want to be fully present. I know that word is probably overused, and for me that means paying attention and not being distracted. Saying yes to pool days, afternoon adventures, basketball, ice cream dates, movie nights, and all the little moments that make summer special. I don’t want to be distracted by work or constantly thinking about the next thing on my to-do list.

I’m still learning, but summer used to really stress me out. When I was working, I longed to be with my kids. When I was with my kids, I felt like I should be working. It caused me a lot of anxiety and I’ve done a lot of inner work to try to not freak out like I used to.

When the kids are with their dad, I can shift gears. I want to use that time intentionally to work, create content, study for my Certified Personal Trainer exam, coach my clients well, and move my business forward.

There is a time for family, and there is a time for focused work, and I want to embrace both without feeling pulled in two directions. I know that my situation may be different from yours. It’s really hard being divorced, but I also have spent over a decade building a business that allows me to work from home with flexible hours. I’m incredibly thankful for that.

I’m also continuing my commitment to my own health. My goal isn’t perfection, it’s consistency. Hitting my macros, getting my workouts in, walking every day, drinking water and getting good sleep. These habits help me feel strong, energized, and confident.

Finally, I want to continue building this new chapter of my career. Becoming a certified personal trainer has been a goal of mine for a long time, and each study session gets me one step closer. I’m halfway done studying now!

My July Intentions

• Be fully present with my kids when they’re with me.
• Let go of work guilt during family time.
• Use kid-free days for focused, productive work.
• Continue studying for my Certified Personal Trainer exam.
• Stay consistent with my workouts, walks, and nutrition.
• Keep building my coaching business one step at a time.
• Slow down enough to enjoy this season instead of rushing through it.

I’m learning that life doesn’t have to be perfectly balanced every single day. Some days are for work, some are for family, and some are simply for rest.

One thing we’ve been trying to be more intentional about lately is sitting down for dinner together as a family. Life gets busy with work, kids, sports, and everything else on the calendar, so it’s easy for everyone to grab something different or eat at different times. That’s been a habit I’ve longed to break for such a long time in our own house, but it’s really hard when you’re not used to it.

We started out slowly with low expectations. First, we had to figure out one day of the week where we could have everyone sit down together. We started with Fridays because, at the time, Elliott didn’t live here, but he was always here on Fridays and sometimes Saturdays we’d eat out.

Next, what could everyone agree on to eat?

We had to think through what is one meal that we all like and look forward to eating – burgers and brats.

That was a good first choice for us because everyone likes that and Elliott really enjoys grilling.

He and I can both have burgers, but he can use a lower fat meat for mine and a higher fat for him and the kids. We can also choose different buns (or no bun for him) and toppings and that don’t interfere with the experience.

Now that Elliott has moved in, we’re making it a priority to enjoy a few more meals at the table each week.

The challenging part is that I’m so used to eating my own meals and cooking something different for my kids. Elliott’s been expressing a desire for us to eat more of the same things for both simplicity and the ease of cooking. And I like that idea too.

BUT, we have different health and fitness goals.

I’m tracking my macros and focusing on hitting certain calories, protein, carbs and fat to support my Fit at 50 lean muscle building.

Elliott prefers to eat mostly keto because he has osteoarthritis and he feels like that type of diet keeps the inflammation down in his body.

When he cooks, he uses lots of oil and butter and I use barely any! It’s been something we’ve had to talk through and communicate about so that we can find our happy medium. Instead of making two separate dinners, we’ve found that with a few simple swaps, like adding rice or potatoes to one plate and extra veggies or avocado to another, we can all enjoy the same meal.

Usually, before dinner we’ll go for a short walk, then come home and cook together. It’s become one of my favorite parts of the evening. And I love it when the kids are with us and we can eat together at the table.

I share these things to let you know it’s not perfect and is still a work in progress, but we are putting in the effort because both Elliott and I feel that it’s a meaningful way to bond and run our household.

Now for the fun part – the meals we’ve come up with that we can all enjoy together!

Size Reference: I’m a shorty (5’1) and petite, weighing about 110.  I typically wear size 0p/25 jeans, XS or XSP in tops and dresses.

It has definitely heated up here in Houston so I ordered a couple new jean shorts from Amazon and I’m so happy with this pair!

They have zero gaping in the waist, a comfortable denim material with a high waist and a little bit longer of a hem.

I paired them with this boat neck style ribbed knit tank – very cute, casual and comfortable.

If you like a little bit longer inseam, these are a cute pair! These are also a comfortable high waist in a cut off style. Again, no gaping in the waist which can be hard to find, so I really appreciate that!

I’ve also seen jelly sandals everywhere lately, and think this pair is cute and easily dresses up the outfit.

I’m sure this tank looks familiar, it’s that same v-neck I’ve tried before and packed for Denver. I love this style for summer. It’s regular bra friendly and goes with everything.

These opaque white jeans are a winner! They have a high waist, front patch pockets and a wide leg that gives you legs for days.

I love red and white together and this would be so cute for the fourth! The top blouses with an elastic hem and has a little higher neckline which feels nice and polished.

The stitching gives it a modern feel with a faux tie detail at the shoulder that’s just darling.

These maxi skirts are always popular this this time of year. The white goes with everything, and I wore it in Fredericksburg. It’s midi length, (more maxi on me ;)), elastic waist, flowy movement.

I paired with this bright bubble style tank with pretty pleating. It was a little big on me, so I just tucked it under.

I really like this shell style tank that can be dressed up or down. I’m wearing it with those jean shorts and front tucked it. It’s a nice lightweight cotton material. This top would also be perfect for work with a blazer and pants.

V-Neck Tank Tops

Seriously, just the perfect stretchy ribbed knit v-neck. On repeat over here!

This is a two piece skirt and top set. The top has a hook and eye closure all the way down, and is really cute but the material does not feel the best. It feels almost flimsy and thin.

This is definitely a get what you pay for set, but still a fun style.

This poplin cotton set is really fun for summer especially in the orange. It’s a button down and skirt with shorts underneath. You can easily mix and match the pieces too.

This knit set is really cute. I really like the big stitching and collar that dresses it up a little. It’s a stretchy sweater knit, so really comfortable.

I rolled the shorts once since they were a little long on me, but so cute.

This sets also a sweater knit material, super comfortable and loose so still good for warm weather. It’s a cropped v-neck with the contrast hem and stripes, but not belly baring.

The shorts are just a pull on style with a functional drawstring and pockets. You could probably size down if you don’t want it as relaxed.

I’m so smitten with this midi dress, also from Petal + Pup. I love this deep emerald color with the blush florals. It feels silky on, has ruching on the side and a demure slit that’s not too high.
