Beauty Review: Spa Symphony Super H2O Bian Stone Facial Treatment and Facebook Giveaway!

These days, finding an experienced and trustworthy facial salon is as difficult as breaking a coconut with your bare hands. I've also become rather prudent with my choice of spas and treatments. I believe most of you will know why.

I've visited a few spas in the past few months and have been pretty pleased with their services and adherence to good hygiene practices. I think the best facial option now is to stick to your guns and only go to spas that you've patronized and enjoyed.

I was introduced to Spa Symphony when I attended the V 10 Plus Star Bloggers event two months ago. I must say, I was rather happy with the results.

However, the brief facial session was only able to provide a temporary relief to my congested skin.

As you can see in the photo below, even with makeup on, I could not conceal the zits and bumps around my chin. They were still rather visible.

And according to Katerine, my facial therapist at Spa Symphony, the problem stems from the fact that there's too much debris and sebum trapped deep within the pores. And this in turn results in dilated pores that are clogged and of course unsightly.

And the solution?

Katerine suggested deep cleansing, extractions (gulp!) and a soothing mask later.

She removed my makeup with milk cleanser and scrub from international beauty brand, ANESI.

Here's my bare naked face after cleansing and scrubbing.

Katerine explained that the reason why my face is so oily is because it is extremely dehydrated suggested that the clogged pores and pimples could be the cause of excess oil secretion and hormonal imbalance. So she recommended Spa Symphony's new treatment - Super H2O Bian Stone Facial for my skin. The treatment seeks to eradicate dehydration problems with revolutionary ingredients such as Rice Bran extract and brown seaweeds.

Rice Bran is commonly used to treat eczema (atopic dermatitis) while brown seaweeds are best known for their acne-fighting properties.

Before carrying out the extraction, Katerine removed the dead skin cells from the top of the epidermis with a diamond peel treatment. She emphasized that this will loosen the debris residues and make extraction easier later.

Then she steamed my face for 15 minutes to open the pores.

Well, no photos of the extraction process as I was in immense pain. :O

Even after a diamond peel treatment and loads of steaming, my pores were still pretty closed and dirt and sebum were still deeply embedded in the epidermis. Sigh. The result of frequent makeup application, oily skin, improper cleansing techniques and lack of facial treatments.

Katerine spent about 30 minutes removing the dirt and excess sebum completely.

The extraction tools used in this process carries the highest risk of bacterial infection so Spa Symphony made sure that all tools and equipment were sterilized and disinfected before using them on me.

Phew. It's finally over.

It was a hard battle and my face is now covered in red marks. :(

And Katerine closed the pores again with the Bian Stone gua sha therapy.

Bian Stone is a modern take on natural skin healing gua sha therapy. During the treatment, the Bian Stone is skillfully rubbed along specific channels and meridian points on the face to shape, reduce bloating and tighten pores.

Katerine then massaged some serum on my face before applying a purifying blue mask. See next picture.

The mask exuded a relaxing mint fragrance which was totally refreshing.

Katerine gave me a relaxing and rejuvenating neck and shoulder massage while we waited for the mask to dry.

And then we removed the mask!

I thought this looked like a scene from some horror or sci-fi movie. Haha!

Tadah!

My face swelled a bit from the squeezing and tugging during the extraction process and I was left with conspicuous red marks on my face for the next few days. To be honest, my self-esteem was slightly trampled for those few days.

It didn't help that I had to remove my makeup at a Panasonic beauty workshop the following day and have myself filmed for the Singapore Blog Awards promotional video.

Even though there were some red marks and purging symptoms on the first few days of the treatment, my skin felt less bumpy and rough.

It's been two weeks and my skin condition has improved significantly. It is much smoother than before and I'm suffering from less breakouts.

There are still dark marks on my chin area but they are getting lighter everyday. Even though healing is taking longer than usual due to a more aggressive extraction process, I'm glad Katerine solved the root cause of my constant breakouts.

One more thing I would like to highlight is the thoughtfulness of the spa. I noticed they provide trinket boxes for customers to stash their jewelry as well as contact lens kits for customers to store their lenses during the facial.

All in all, it was a satisfying and invigorating process. The attentiveness and vast skincare knowledge of Katerine impressed me enormously and I thought the experience certainly deserves 4 big fat Honeyz crowns. :)

And here's what I think of the Enavose Swiss Glacial Loose Powder SPF 15...

I used to touch up my makeup with foundation but the result is a cakey face look. So I'm all for loose powders these days as they're light and less pore-clogging. However, most loose powder jars are too bulky for my small purses and too inconvenient to use in public. Usually, I'll have to shake the jar to load the powder on the sifter tray but the result is always a huge mess because more powder will get on my bag and clothes than on my face.

Enavose eliminates this problem by installing a huge powder puff on its lid that leaves a small gap between the sifter and the puff. This allows an appropriate amount of powder to come through the sifter, preventing wastage in the process. Brilliant!

Unlike most loose powders that produce a matte finish, the reflective mineral pigments of the powder imparts a satin finish instead. The face looks radiant and dewy even after several layers of powder.

Here's my face with only L'Oreal's Lucent Magique Light Infusing Liquid Foundation.

Love the velvety look. I thought I looked like I had highlighter on. Haha!

However, I have to warn you that the reflective mineral pigments is pretty prominent and produces a sparkly look when applied. Not that it's a bad thing but if you're going for clean and au naturel look, you might find it too glittery for your liking.

Even though my face looked shiny and oily after application, I thought it felt pretty smooth like I'm touching silk. And that texture lasted for a couple of hours. That's pretty amazing for my oily skin.

Singapore Blog Awards 2013 Nominations: Beauty and Vlog

I've been nominated as a finalist in the Singapore Blog Awards'(SBA) Beauty and Vlog categories! *prances around*

As mentioned in my Facebook posts, I wouldn't have been able produce those photos and videos, write the reviews, maintain a beauty encyclopedia and get my craft on without your unwavering love (e.g. emails, FB likes and the increasing views).

And of course, the biggest and sloppiest kisses go to my supportive family who've partaken in all my blog activites i.e. Spa parties, vote contests and this latest video I made for the SBA's vlog contest (see above). :D

Last year, I left my job to become a full time blogger. I was very relieved to have left the rat race but I was shocked to realize that I was about to enter a super rat race which was even more competitive. Because instead of vying for that promotion with a small group of people, I'm now going up against writers from all over the world for readership and attention in cyber space.

I read somewhere that the blogosphere is like Hollywood and blogging is like acting. And I concur with that totally. Everyday, there are many up-and-coming bloggers who begin blogging and want to make their mark in the blogging scene. Now if you've been blogging for some time, you'll know that blogging is not all fun and glamorous. Not everyone can gain 100,000 views and land juicy sponsorship deals overnight. A lot of hard work and time is involved to produce posts that are deemed good and worth reading.

To concentrate on blogging full time, I lost precious family and friends time, some good job opportunities and a stable income. But in return, I've learnt so much about the path to success, learnt how much my family and friends mean to me and also forged many great friendships with readers, fellow bloggers and brands.

To receive the nominations from the Singapore Blog Awards is truly gratifying. It made all the sacrifices worth it and this journey a more meaningful one. I was also very glad that my family came out to support me by participating in my video blog entry for the Singapore Blog Awards.

The theme of the video for the Best Vlog category is something/someone from/about the 60’s that inspires you. I've always been very inspired by grandma's fighting spirit and her ability to juggle the demands of work and family at the same time.

She's also always been there for me and will always be my best roommate, friend and grandmother. So I decided to make a video about my lovable grandma who's also to me - the biggest icon in the 1960s. :P

I thought this is also a great opportunity to get the family together, record a family video and to remember grandma's legacy.

Beauty Review: Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Cream and Origins Blogger Workshop

I've officially crossed the 'late 20s' mark a few weeks ago which also means the red alert for wrinkles is now full on.

Anti-aging creams are no longer optional but mandatory in my beauty regimen. *shrieks*

However, I have to be really mindful with this one as my skin is not the most receptive to rich creams and serums. These products tend to suffocate the skin, causing congestion and zits.

What I thought about the Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Cream...

I smell nature everytime I open the lid of the tub. The fragrance is soft and alluring. And the best part is, the lightweight cream absorbs into the skin pretty quickly, leaving a smooth and silky finish.

Apply only a dollop of the anti-aging cream each time. Anything more and you may create a sticky finish.

I do not use the cream on my entire face but only on the problematic areas like the nasolabial folds and neck. Of course, my lines haven't vanished completely but I thought they looked softened and less visible. I've been using it for three weeks and I haven't noticed any major breakouts so I guess I'll continue to use it until the day I need botox. :P

Glitzing up the Queen Elizabeth II Cup 2013 with classy champagne and joyful banter!

I never thought I would attend a horse racing event, place a wager on a horse race and even better, win it.

But I did. All on one night!

It all happened when I was invited by the Singapore Turf Club to their Queen Elizabeth II Cup that took place last month.

Read this quick recount of my adventures at this prestigious annual horse race. :)

In 1972, the Singapore Turf Club introduced the Queen Elizabeth II cup when Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II paid her first visit to the Bukit Timah Racecourse. Since then, it has become a tradition of the turf club to celebrate this memorable visit in pomp and pageantry fashion with the organization of the glamorous Queen Elizabeth II Cup race (QEII Cup) every year.

This year, the event was held on April 26 at the Marquee of the Singapore Racecourse and 'your humble blogger' was invited! :D

I was also given a guest invitation, so I asked B along. :D

The theme is Victorian Affair so I wore a cocktail dress and adorned it with a cute fascinator that was made by the lovely folks of the Singapore Turf Club.

B also wore a hat to go with the theme. Looking suave! Haha!

And we're ready to rock and roll!

Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome by some Victorian costume minglers who graciously agreed to take not one but several photos with us. I don't wanna flood this page with too many photos so only showing the best one (below). :P

Jessie, Head of the turf club's Digital Media department kindly offered to take us on a tour around the club before dinner commenced.

Then we went to the Marquee (where the party was held) and was immediately greeted by a flamboyant and glamorously dressed crowd. Think The Great Gatsby.

Certainly felt like celebrities. :P

Paparazzi galore!

It was the turf club's first Ladies' Night of the Year so not only did we ladies get to relish a sumptuous buffet spread, we were also generously treated to delicious cocktails, professional henna services and pampering manicures.

This was done in less than 5 minutes!

On top of beauty services, there was also a fashion bazaar where ladies could satisfy their shopping urge.

The activities do not end here. We were also entertained by belly dancing performances and contestants of the Best Hat on Track contest who wowed us with their catwalk moves.

While we were sipping fine wine and enjoying the host of exciting activities organized by the Singapore Turf Club, the boys on the racetrack were contesting for a whopping SGD350,000 prize money.

Jessie made sure we were not left out of the action and excitement, so she brought us to the parade ring where we could get up close but not so personal with the race horses.

The reason why we can't get too close is because they might kick us with their back feet should they feel threatened or agitated. So here we are, 2 metres away from the giant ponies.

Then I spotted No. 6 winking at me!

Jessie said it was a sign - Tim (No.6) was trying to 'establish a connection' with me. So she suggested that I bet on him later.

And so I did!

We watched as the jockeys led their winning horses to the racetrack.

Bye horsies! Good luck! Especially you Tim! :P

Jessie brought us to an exclusive spot where we had an unobstructed view of the starting barrier.

And let the race begin!

And Tim came up trumps! Yay! And so did I, in a way. Won 22 bucks!

Guess what's this for?

It is a weighing scale for the riders.

So why do we need to weigh them?

According to Jessie, this is to ensure there's no discrepancy in their weights before the race and after to prevent cheating.

So riders are required to ‘weigh out’ before the race which involves standing with full riding equipment, on the digital scale in front of the Clerk of the Scales. After the race, riders 'weigh in' to identify any weight differences. And should there be a difference, the Clerk of the Scales will lodge an objection with the Stewards, who will automatically hold an enquiry. The horse involved will be disqualified.

Here we are with star jockey Joao Moreira. He was the jockey who rode on Tim and ultimately, led him to victory. Kudos to you Joao!

What I think of it...

V 10 Plus Star Bloggers Event

Top Japanese skincare brand, V 10 Plus just held their very first bloggers event last month and my beauty encyclopedia, Honeyz Cube was granted the great opportunity of celebrating this significant milestone as their marketing partner. Whee!

The best part was - not only was I there for work (inviting and hosting the bloggers), I also got to enjoy a delectable spread of pastries, an invigorating V10 Plus facial and a bag of V 10 Plus goodies. :D

The event was held at the luxurious Spa Symphony that was founded by national swimmer Leslie Kwok (also dubbed Most Beautiful Man here). :P

The spa, albeit its confusing walkways, was huge and inviting. The V 10 Plus Star Bloggers Event took place in two of Spa Symphony's lavish facial treatment rooms.

The founder of V 10 Plus, Akiko Yokota, commenced the event with a thorough introduction of the brand and its star products - V 10 Plus Serums, emphasizing that V 10 Plus products are free of parabens, artificial colors, mineral oil and chemical fragrance and suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin. Up-close, Akiko san's skin looks flawless! Smooth, fair, freckle-free and blackheads-free. The V 10 Plus serums did wonders for her skin.

Then it was my turn to experience the V 10 Plus miracle.

Due to time and space constraints, the facial consisted of only three steps - clean, exfoliate and moisturize. The facial therapist exfoliated my face with V 10 Plus' peeling gel and white flakes (as seen below) were consequently formed. Full review of the peeling gel here.

Then she finished off with gentle massages using V 10 Plus' most lusted-after product - Hyaluronic Acid Serum (SGD128, 30ml).

I love the gel-like consistency of the serum. I was so glad that it wasn't too oily or sticky for my blemish prone complexion. The lightweight serum seeped into my skin shortly after application leaving it soft, smooth and calmed. I had a few angry red spots before the facial and the redness was significantly reduced after the facial. Its gentle formulation proved to be a killer! 4 Honeyz crowns!

My Holiday Fashion Repertoire!

Last week, I visited London and Paris - the fashion lands that inarguably never fail to produce ubiquitous but timeless fashion trends.

And since I'm in the ultimate fashion hub, I can't let my inner fashionista down. I brought at least 20 different apparels - jackets, coats, skirts, pants and tops to make sure I always look modish and camera-ready. Haha!

On my first day in Paris, I opted for a fun and young look to go with my joyful vacation mood. :P

Following the intensive moisture treatment from weeks ago, my mane is fully tamed and all ready to rock the dip-dye hair look! :P

Still pondering: Pink hair or no pink hair?

Well, I can't help being this indecisive because dabbling in the trendy dip-dye phenomenon before meeting the in-laws for the first time is pretty risky. I mean what if the dye job goes wrong and I end up looking like a vagabond? I don't want them to hate me. :(

Kenji promised that everything will be fine and before I could say anything, the wizards of Hair Profile began working their magic to bring my hair back to life.

I'm a pretty lucky girl because the salon was actually bustling with customers at the time and yet, the directors still insisted on personally styling my hair.

Talk about commitment!

My scalp is rather sensitive so some hair dyes cause irritation and itching. I was worried about this but thought 'Dang it! For fabulous looking hair, the itching is all worth it.' *scratch scratch*

Well, all worries of irritation were eliminated when Kenji (Director of Hair Profile) introduced Napura's CM|10 Colormix. It comprises several types of essential oils that encourage the safe application of color and reduces the aggressive effect of coloring substances. The particular calming properties of the essences used mitigate the itch sensation and improve the welfare of the skin throughout the exposure time, preventing irritations and redness. In fact, regular use during coloring may help to prevent scalp sensitivity!

Kenji astounded me once again with his commitment to great service and quality. :)

Hair was dyed dark brown and adorned with golden streaks. Kenji hid the highlights underneath the hair so that they can only be seen when I flick it. Peekaboo!

And now we welcome the pink wave!

Kenji painstakingly picked out the gold highlights and painted them pink.

To minimize hair loss due to scalp irritation or breakages, Kenji made sure the potential of Hydrogen (pH) level remained balanced by constantly spraying a Napura pH balancer on my scalp. According to him, dye jobs will elevate the pH of the scalp and hair, making them more alkaline. This may cause the hair cuticles to open, allowing bacteria to enter. The Napura pH balancer is an acidifying spray treatment and it will neutralize the scalp by contracting the cuticles, thus preventing fungi and bacteria from getting in.

The process culminated with Napura's K|10 Kera-Filler leave-on treatment that stabilizes hair colour and revitalizes its structure by protecting the capillary fiber in an optimal way. The silk proteins in the product ensure that hair stays shiny and vibrant for a long time.

And I'm done!

Kenji kept his promise - dark resplendent-looking tresses with hints of pink and of course without any compromise on the current length and texture.

I thought it looks trendy and oozes class at the same time. Ingenious! Even the in-laws loved it!

To maintain the glaze and color of the hair, Kenji gave me a bottle of Redken Color Extend Shampoo to take on the Europe trip. Well, he needed to ensure that I still kept my title as the 'Wannabe Purveyor of Style' even when I was half way around the world. :P

Also met the pretty Ginevi who was getting her hair makeover from Kenji too.

According to Kenji, the pink hair only lasts three weeks so I decided to do a photoshoot with Honeyz Paint House to immortalize the look. :P

The gaps between the lashes were filled and I thought they look a tad longer than before.

My lashes are rather weak and tend to fall out easily whenever I apply or remove eye makeup. But after just 3 days of use, my lashes became more firmly attached as I noticed less fallen lashes around my eye area.

The gentle and odorless formula of the serum also makes it lash extension friendly. A few days ago, I started applying the serum on my lash extensions too and noticed that not only do the extensions last longer, they also looked thicker and glossier.

Even though the serum cost a whopping SGD39.90 for a 7ml bottle, I thought it's worth every penny because nowadays, my lashes look beyond luscious - naturally!

We've heard the horror stories of eyelash extensions - eyelash breakages, allergic reactions and balding eyelashes so I've always resented eyelash extensions. I rather perm then extend my lashes - thinking that it is less detrimental.

Well, expectedly I'm so wrong. Perming weakens the lashes which can also result in breakages and to add fuel to the fire, the chemicals used may also irritate the eyes and skin around them.

In case you're wondering why she used lashes of different lengths, it is because uneven lashes produce prettier and more naturally-looking lashes. She also used longer lashes at the outer corners of the eyes to create the kitten flick look (or winged eyeliner look).

Because if they are of the same length, this is how they'll look.

The extensions last up to 6 weeks and it's been two months so I decided to go back to Lolita Group at Marina Link to replenish the fallen lash extensions.

I've been to the Lolita Group salon once and the salon looks rather different from the last time I saw it. Apparently, it underwent a major overhaul.

This was how it used to look like.

And Lolita freshens up the salon with this brand new look!

It looks more spacious now with a chill out space equipped with magazines and candies and a new shelf that exhibits a whole new range of beauty products from LJH.

Jocelyn also added new beds to accommodate more customers. How thoughtful!

Then I was ushered to my very own private treatment room by Ally, my lash artist of the day. She's very experienced and has served many top bloggers like Dawn Yang and Mag of modgam.com fame.

These were the 'leftovers' from the last treatment.

Not too bad eh? Most of them were still firmly adhered to my own lashes. I was rather surprised by this result because I knew my permed lashes were too weak to hold the extensions for long. The lightweight extensions and skillful techniques of Pinky defied the laws of gravity and prevented the extensions from falling out. :D

This time, I requested for a more dramatic look so Ally suggested removing the old extensions completely and replacing them with brand new extensions that are between 10mm to 12mm.

Here we go!

To make sure that the lash extensions and chemicals do not come into contact with the bottom lashes, Ally covered them with skin-friendly tape before she proceeded with the removal.

Within a mere 10 minutes, all lash extensions were removed.

The entire process takes about two hours and since I'm keeping my eyes closed during this period, Ally applied a complimentary soothing eye patch mask under my eyes for a mini eye facial! Talk about great service!

And the makeover begins...

Each lash was attached 1 – 2 mm away from the root. This ensures a healthy eyelash will continue to grow and the skin on the eyelid is kept clean.

Then Ally finishes the treatment by fanning off the dust and sprinkling water on the extensions.

According to Jocelyn, water enhances the viscosity of the glue and ensures that it holds the extensions for a longer period of time. I thought this was rather amusing because lash artists usually advise against water contact. Yay!! This means I don't have to discard any water activities!

The final product.

You may experience a slight stinging sensation and redness of the eyes during the treatment due to the fumes from the glue but these symptoms usually wear off after a few hours or a day.

To keep my lashes clean and tangle-free, Novalash gave me a lash wand to maintain the lashes' cleanliness and tidiness.

Here's an important fact...

The greatest nemesis of Novalash extensions is Glycol. Any cosmetic product or cleanser containing glycols, organic solvents, urea or high concentrations of alcohol should be avoided to ensure the longevity of the extensions. This is because products such as these can potentially break down the adhesive bond and shorten the lifespan of the extensions.

So I've been using Novalash's alcohol-free Clean Lash cleanser pads. Each pad is soaked in pomegranate extract, pomegranate seed oil and mineral oil to remove makeup and to condition the lashes, extending their lifespan and ensuring that they remain flexible and radiant.

With Novalash's eyelash extensions, I no longer use mascara so removing eye makeup is a breeze. My peepers also look bright and happy 24/7.

What I absolutely love about Indulge in Nails is their hygiene mantra. They adhere to good sanitation practices by ensuring that all tools and sinks are thoroughly sterilized before the customer uses them.

These are my horrible tootsies before the treatment.

High heel horror! One of the many ramifications of wearing high heels are bruised toe nails (or subungal hematoma). Since I can't treat them right now, I decided to cover them up with a dark gelish nail polish.

According to Susan, our nail plates hold grime, moisture and oil so to ensure that the gelish manicure last, we need to get rid of them by dehydrating them with this NSI Nailpure Plus Nail Preparation. To prevent chipping and to maximize shine, Susan also applied these ORLY products to my nails. She explained that these products supply the nails with ample vitamin C and E to protect them, fill ridges and to produce a glossy finish.

Well, I thought so at least.

So I decided to decorate my fingernails with (none other than) cute bunnies!

I'm the luckiest girl in the world! :P

Before I parade my new bunny nails, here are my thoughts after the visit...

Their dedication and passion totally shines through the quality of their work. On top of pretty designs and a well kept salon, I was also impressed with their added attention to hygiene and sanitation. This is a huge plus point to me as we all know that there are millions of germs lurking in those nail tools and practicing proper disinfection techniques will prevent the spread of harmful germs.

The only gripe is - it's not within walking distance to Ang Mo Kio MRT station so getting there might be a hassle for some. Nonetheless, it is still a rather good salon with great value and service.

Beauty Review: Hair Profile and Special Promotion for Honeyz Belles

B just dropped a huge bomb on me announcing that on top of visiting The Lourve and touring the shopping streets of London during our upcoming Europe trip, I'll also be meeting the future in-laws! Eek!!!

It is the first time I'm meeting them so presentation really counts.

I gotta look my best! So first up - get rid of the frizzy hair! I haven't trimmed my hair in months so the mane has gotten a little crimpy and unkempt. But I'm also a pretty troublesome customer when it comes to hairstyling - the length has to be the same, texture softer, colors more vibrant but not loud and so on.

Hence, I've been on a quest for a good and experienced hair salon. And recently, I was very glad to discover an unexpected hidden gem beneath the trendy shops of Far East Plaza.

And the 'diamond' is none other than Hair Profile Salon. It is located at 14 Scotts Road Far East Plaza #01-91.

Still can't believe I missed this all these years.

The cozy salon sports a futuristic design with classy fluorescent lighting and abstract furniture.

The salon is a huge advocate of vitamin-enriched and protein-heavy products so it has brought in the famous international haircare line Redken to rescue and nourish our damaged tresses.

This is the current state of my hair.

I've been contemplating on joining the dip-dye hair trend but since I'm meeting the parents this time, I decided to drop this idea for the time being.

Kenji, the owner of Hair Profile, has been in the business for 18 years. He advised against 'settling for less' when it comes to hairdos and suggested that I still get a subtle hair color makeover.

This is Kenji, who's apparently thinking about the ideal hairstyle for me. Haha!

Kenji assured me that it will not be a 'shocking' hair dye job. He promised to give me dark resplendent-looking tresses with hints of pink without compromising the current length and texture.

Sounds great and here we go!

This is me, still looking scared and worried. Haha!

To achieve beautiful pink streaks, the hair has to be in a tip-top condition. No dry wimpy hair because the bleaching and dying involved in the process will worsen the condition and make the hair as dry as a desert. Adding colors will only produce a tacky hairdo.

Kenji made sure he tamed my unruly hair well before my hair color transformation.

And the first step, snip the split ends!

Then he freshened up my locks with these amazing products from Redken.

Kenji gave my hair a nourishing treatment with products that were jam-packed with nutrients and moisturizers. According to him, this will give the hair a good defense when we feed it with bleaching powder later.

It's treatment time!

Kenji is a perfectionist I tell you! After much deliberation, he decided to dye my hair when its condition is 100% satisfactory.

So he gave me this bottle of Murie M Home Milk to hydrate and boost my dry and flat hair before I come back again for my hair color makeover.

With this, he proceeds to style my hair.

Ta-dah!

The annoying frizz was coaxed into soft and bouncy locks and the hair's natural shine was also restored. My mane feels hydrated and very smooth.

Straight hair is boring so Kenji decided to spruce up my neat locks by curling it to make loose bouncy waves.

Afterthoughts...

My hair was revived and I love the temporary curls that lasted through the night!

During the process, Kenji periodically asked if I were satisfied with the haircut to make sure he did not snip off too much hair. I thought that was rather thoughtful as most good hairstylists will probably just do whatever they want.

I'm also a huge fan of the cosy and friendly ambience of the salon. Kenji and his team's great hairstyling skills and good service certainly made my experience at Hair Profile a very pleasant one. Trust me, Kenji is proficient and talented enough to not only deliver what you want but more than what you expect. He's a force to be reckoned with. Haha!

My first encounter with art was when my mom enrolled me in a Mongolian dance class when I was four years old. Despite the physically demanding training sessions, I fell in love with the strong yet elegant dance moves as well as the beautiful notes of the Mongolian folk music that to me, showed a delicate side of the Mongolian people and their culture. In line with the PAssion Arts Month festivities, Whampoa is doing their part to reach out to the needy within the community. On Saturday, 13 April 2013, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at Block 91, Whampoa Drive (Beside Whampoa Makan Place), a series of ceramic and visual art demonstrations, and a fusion heartland musical performed by professional, and community artist would take place in Whampoa.

Along with the stellar musical performances, there will also be a ceramic and visual art charity flea market. All proceeds will be donated back to the community through various VWOs, and needy households. This event is indeed a treat for the eyes, as well as a way to give something back to the community. The final stop of this Arts journey takes place at Boon Keng MRT station open space at 11am. Evergreen Choir and Kallang Jazz Band will be belting out evergreen hits to warm us up for 3 hours of Arts attack! All participating groups will gather here at Jalan Besar’s Arts Village.

Wowee! It's gonna be a fun-filled artsy weekend! I'm certainly looking out for the ceramic and visual art demonstrations as well as the performing groups!

Look good, Feel Great Masterclass by Olay and Honeyz Facebook Giveaway!

Last weekend, I spent a fruitful and enlightening afternoon at the Four Seasons Hotel for Olay's 'Look good, Feel Great' masterclass.

On top of dexterous makeup tricks and useful skincare tips, the speakers at the event also imparted some valuable biochemistry knowledge to help us understand how our skin behaves in order to choose the right products for our skin.

Top makeup guru, Larry Yeo opened the masterclass with a live makeup demo with one of the participants.

This was probably one of my most favorite sessions of the class. He dispensed many makeup knowledge tips during his short presentation and my most favorite was getting the perfect winged eyeliner.

Larry suggested using our lower waterline as a guide. The wing on the upper lid should start where the lower waterline ends so it'll look like you've extended it. This method helps you create a perfect and equal pair of wings. I've tried it and trust me, it works. I'll be demonstrating this method in my next Youtube makeup tutorial so look out for it!

Next speaker is Barbara Koh, editor of Singapore Women's Weekly.

She showed us how to create show-stopping looks with some simple floral and striped prints and also divulged the secrets to looking effortless but carefully crafted.

Layering and colors are also key to fashion success. Layering can accentuate your figure or hide your body flaws while colors add a tinge of youth and fun to your ensemble!

Next, we were treated to a live demo on product application and massage techniques by none other than Olay's Regional Training and Capability Leader, Susan Park.

Finally, we were introduced to Olay's Senior Scientist, David Khoo who shared the latest skincare technology for the All New Olay Regenerist range as well as introduced the Skin Fatigue theory which I've explained in my Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream review.

According to him, a good skin care product is usually more water-dispersed. This is because the main composition of our skin is water, and more water-dispersed products can carry the ingredients deeper in skin layers.

So he carried out a live demonstration where he mixed both the Olay NEW Regenerist and a Prestige Skincare brand with water in separate bottles. He then asked a participant to shake both bottles to test its solubility. The Olay NEW Regenerist quickly dispersed in the water which indicates a possible high absorption level in the skin.

Travel Review: Kyoto and Hotel Monterey

Angelic plum blossoms, Geisha streets, a magnificent gold-plated temple and an elegantly decorated boutique hotel. Aww... Kyoto, what more can I ask for?!?

I was hoping for a pink Spring with B - stroll down a beautiful park with many cherry blossom trees as the backdrop. Something like this...

Okay, I know the above might be beyond the realms of possibility but I was hoping that it will be close.

To fulfill our romantic pink dream, B and I went online to search for the ideal Spring destination. Kyoto popped up many times during our search and unknowingly, we were beginning to imagine our dream holiday - feasting on yummilicious sushi, indulging in hot spring baths and taking photos of scenic landscapes and historically rich shrines.

And then we made our decision - Kyoto here we come!

Since we intended to visit Tokyo too, we decided to fly to Haneda Airport (aka Tokyo International Airport) and take a train to Kyoto.

We took the Keikyu railway line from Haneda Airport to Shinagawa Station then transferred to the JR line Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto Station.

The journey to Kyoto takes 160 mins (2hrs 40 mins), so there's a high possibility that you'll feel peckish after sometime. Well, great news! The shinkansen offers delectable bites, bentos (box lunches) and a varied array of beverage options at reasonable prices.

We arrived in Kyoto at last!

We spot our hotel!

We chose the Hotel Monterey after reading its glowing reviews on Trip Advisor.

What we loved about this hotel was its great location (Karasuma Sanjo in the center of Kyoto) that provides easy access to Kyoto's best shopping districts like Gion, famous heritage sites and tourist attractions as well as popular dining spots.

Walk into the classy hotel and be greeted by the sparkly chandeliers hanging off the ceiling, shiny floors and warm smiles of the Hotel Monterey staff.

The reception

The decor of the lobby is heavily influenced by British culture and heritage, from the paintings, to the faux fireplace to the Victorian furniture.

"A hotel that combines the best of Kyoto's stylish culture and Britain's traditional heritage. The design is based on the arts and crafts of Scotland, particularly Edinburgh, its ancient capital. In fact Kyoto and Edinburgh are not only sister cities in name, but they also share many traits such as the lively street atmosphere and traditional culture. This hotel expresses the relationship between the two cities through its traditional architecture and warm atmosphere."

Ooh... they have a library too.

Gotcha! It is not a real library. It is actually a cafe called 'The Library'.

The cafe/bar adheres to the english theme with a traditional British stately-home library design that is artfully adorned with 1870 ornaments. It also features an antique mantle piece and bar-counter, making for a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

And now we take the lift and head to the room!

I felt like I was transported back to Japan again. The lift and corridor of the rooms spot a more traditional Japanese decor with floral motifs, Japanese art pieces and wooden walls.

And we arrived at our abode of the trip!

It is a cozy and functional little room that is well equipped with a queen-sized bed, comfortable robes, a washlet toilet, steam-free bathroom mirror and free wifi!

On top of soft fluffy towels and regular hotel toiletries, Hotel Monterey also provides foaming face and hand wash!

This is the kinda luxury and service I'm talking about. They take care of you from head to your pinky toes. :P

And now we explore the room.

The room boasts an elegant design by continuing the theme of the lobby and corridor with its english-themed dark blue striped walls, bedsheets and dark wooden furniture and Japanese lamp.

On top of the basic hotel amenities, the hotel also provides an air purifier, anti-germ spray and trinket containers for our jewelry and knick-knacks.

Not enough choices? Vending machine to the rescue!

Vending machines are ubiquitous in Japan so I wasn't surprised to find one along the corridor.

Overall, I thought my room was perfect. My only gripe was the pathetic view from my window despite staying on the 11th floor. Oh well...

There are many good eateries in close vicinity of the hotel that offers traditional, authentic and savory Kyoto cuisine. Here are my top faves.

Minokichi (Kyoto's Traditional Cuisine)

If I didn't read the signboard (below) wrongly, I think this next establishment is called Risami Sushi. It is a traditional family restaurant that offers the freshest and most delicious sashimi and sushi.

These great restaurants were actually introduced to us by the friendly staff at the Hotel Monterey concierge (see below). Besides arranging transport for hotel guests, they also provide detailed travel guides and information.

Trust me. They know Kyoto inside out and can easily name five good restaurants or attractions when you enquire. They are well-versed in English so you don't have to worry if you can't speak or read Japanese.

And now here's a quick rundown of the must-see tourist attractions in Kyoto recommended by Hotel Monterey Kyoto!

Gion

Gion (祇園) is Kyoto's most famous geisha district, located around Shijo Avenue between Yasaka Shrine in the east and the Kamo River in the west. It is filled with shops, restaurants and ochaya (teahouses), where geiko (Kyoto dialect for geisha) and maiko (geiko apprentices) entertain.

Gion attracts tourists with its high concentration of traditional wooden machiya merchant houses. Due to the fact that property taxes were formerly based upon street frontage, the houses were built with narrow facades only five to six meters wide, but extend up to twenty meters in from the street.

I met a real Geisha!

Kinkaku-ji or Temple of the Golden Pavilion (a Buddhist temple made famous in 1950 when it was destroyed by arson after surviving World War II intact.)

Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera is one of the most famous temples in Kyoto and was built at the end of the 8th century. The main hall was constructed in the 17th century, and is famous for its location overhanging a cliff. The platform of the main hall, which is supported by 139 giant pillars, affords a spectacular view of the town of Kyoto. It is designated a National Treasure. The three-storied pagoda in the temple precinct, which was rebuilt during the 17th century, is designated by the national government as an Important Cultural Property. The expansive site, with an area of 130,000 sq m, contains many Important Cultural Properties, including buildings and Buddhist images.

Along the ravine to the south of the main hall grow cherry and maple trees. This site is known for its cherry blossoms in the spring, and its red leaves during the fall.

I took many shots and this was probably my best capture of the Kiyomizu-dera. I love it so much and I'm so going to hang this picture in my future home. :D

Kurama Onsen

Outdoor and indoor baths can be enjoyed at Kurama Onsen, a ryokan located at the upper end of the town of Kurama. It can be reached in a 10 minute walk from the train station along the town's only road or along a nature trail following the river. Staying guests can use the baths for free, while daytrippers pay 2500 yen to use all of the baths or 1100 yen for just the outdoor bath.

After your soothing hot soaks, you could enjoy a fine cup of green tea or try Kurama Onsen's homemade dishes at their family restaurant. They serve the healthiest and most palatable dishes I tell you.

You might be interested to know that Kurama Onsen maintains a strict no tattoo policy. So if you have a tattoo, you might wanna skip this and head to this next destination. :)

Ryōan-ji

Ryōan-ji (Shinjitai: 竜安寺, Kyūjitai: 龍安寺, The Temple of the Dragon at Peace) is a Zen temple located in northwest Kyoto, Japan. It belongs to the Myōshin-ji school of the Rinzai branch of Zen Buddhism. The temple garden is considered to be one of the finest examples of a kare-sansui, a Japanese rock garden, or zen garden, in Japan.[1] The temple and gardens are listed as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine

It was the third week of March and the cherry blossoms had yet to bloom. :(

But!

The plum blossoms were already bursting out in bloom so we were just as excited.

Plum, or ume, trees were introduced to Japan from China in the 8th century and are believed to ward off danger. On many older plots of land you will find plum trees planted in the northeast corner, the so-called ''Demon's Gate'', from where danger and evil are believed to enter. Because of this belief, many family crests also incorporate the plum blossom into their design. Plum blossoms herald spring and offer the perfect occasion for the year's first picnics, a sure sign that cherry blossoms and warmer days can't be far away.

Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine is home to nearly 2,000 plum trees. This shrine has become synonymous with plum blossoms, which are a prominent decorative motif in its lanterns, tiles, and woodwork. From about February 10th to the end of March, the plum orchard southwest of the main shrine is open for public viewing.

It is a flea market that is held around Kitano-tenmangu Shrine on the 25th of each month. Everyday people sell second-hand clothing, pottery, and antiques here in small stalls. This is a fun place to chat with the sellers, learn about the items on sale, and even negotiate the prices if you feel up to the task. There are also plenty of food stalls as well.

Finally, I bid my Kyoto trip goodbye with a sumptuous and calorific meal at Jouvencelle, Gion.

They serve the best matcha fondue/ green tea fondue in town!

Dip your favorite Japanese mochi (rice cake), fruits and cakes into a specially prepared matcha chocolate for the ultimate green tea experience.

Finished your confections and cakes and still have some matcha chocolate left? Then transform it into a matcha au lait by adding some warm milk! This suggestion was made by a Jouvencelle staff. :)

Here's what I thought about the product...

I was 14 when I first discovered the magic of beauty products and guess what? The first beauty product I ever laid my hands on was my grandma's Olay whitening cream! So there was definitely an air of nostalgia when I unboxed my Olay Regenerist cream. Haha!

The consistency of the cream is thick and smooth. Here's a photo of the texture.

The fragrance and slightly greasy texture made me worry about its effects on my sensitive skin. So each time, I'll apply only a small dollop of the cream on my face and neck to prevent breakouts or any adverse skin reactions.

But I gotta say, the fragrance is rather alluring and refreshing. It made my skin smell like flowers! ✿

The cream broke me out in the first couple of days but the pimples subsided once the skin got used to the richness of the product. Even though I do not have crow's feet and wrinkles on my face at the moment, I do have unflattering neck lines. So I'm hoping with prolonged use, it will mitigate the wrinkly neck problem.

To be honest, if you're looking for a miracle cream like the pink bees honey anti-aging cream that Adam invented in the movie Upside Down, you'll be pretty disappointed. Even though it's named micro sculpting cream, I don't think it actually sculpts or lifts the contours of the face. To achieve such drastic results, you probably have to consult a plastic surgeon instead.

All in all, I think the cream functions adequately as an emollient and hydrator. I'll certainly lug this along on winter vacations. 3.5 Honeyz crowns!

Here's what I think about it.

As the name suggests, the product possesses a watery and mousse-like texture that glides well on skin. It does not leave a white sheen or greasy film on the skin.

When applied, the Biore UV Watery Essence dissipates into my skin fast leaving a flawless matte and smooth finish. This phenomenon seems to be consistent even when I'm perspiring.

I applied the product on my limbs before my jog this morning. After the jog, I touched my hands and legs and realized my skin remained moist and clean even after much perspiration. It did not produce the greasy and sticky residue like many other sunscreens did. :D

I also like that it does not contain pore-clogging ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium oxide which are absolutely detrimental to my acne-prone skin. I did not have a pimple attack after application. :)

The fragrance is not prominent in this product in that it did not have the typical 'sunscreen smell' unlike my Sunplay lotions. I could not smell the oils or the lemon in the ingredients either. This is great news because you don't wanna go out smelling like the swimming pool, do you?

Catwalk Debut - Noel Caleb Jonah Fashion Show 2013

This weekend, I'll be walking Noel Caleb's fashion runway that will be held at The Sail at Marina Bay! :D

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a fashion show?

Well, before I 'strut my stuff' on the runway, I thought I could show you the preparation that goes into a runway show as well as a sneak preview of the Noel Caleb Jonah Collection.

Since most of us are catwalk newbies, Noel Caleb invited veteran model Jessica Ee to help us polish our walk.

The session commenced with a mini catwalk show where we had to show Jessica our walks.

I've never done this before so it was a sink or swim situation for me. I look pretty lost here. Haha!

Jessica was very funny throughout the rehearsal and often made remarks like 'I'm gonna scrutinize and criticize your walks like I'm Noami Campbell because being nice does not pay off!'

Jessica's antics and the cheery banter with the girls certainly made the catwalk rehearsals a much relaxed and happier experience.

My main takeaway from the session was to walk and pose with confidence. According to Jessica, I have the tendency to abruptly break my walk and pose. So she advised that I should always know when I'm going to stop and prepare to pose. Also twisting my torso slightly and throwing my shoulders forward during the pose will accentuate the narrowness of my waist and make me look more confident.

Now who says modeling is easy???

I wore a pair of turquoise heels that day which Jessica strongly disapproved of. She advised that we wear only nude or black 5-inch stiletto heels during the show because they go very well with outfits of any color.

Thanks Noel Caleb and Jessica for giving me a good reason to go shopping. :P

Immediately after the session, I broke the bank and bought a few shoes and of course, also this pair of gorgeous suede nude heels from Aldo for the fashion show.

After all that striding on our imaginary runway, we had our first dress fitting with the pretty clothes of the Jonah Collection.

I'm a huge fan of eyewear products so their popular Venice Frames caught my eyes instantly.

It is called the Venice Cafe Red Sun and is currently priced at SGD179.

The creator of these shades is the famous Ottica Carraro that also produces a range of designer eyeglasses and sunglasses. They've worked with big names like Ray-Ban, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Chanel and the list goes on.

So I wasn't surprised to see this in the description:

"Unique craftsmanship process. Materials: (Natural) Well-tested cellulose acetate. Sunglasses full UV polarised."

Most shades use injection molded plastic frames which are made by injecting a more brittle petroleum based plastic that is liquified, then injected into an aluminum or stainless steel mold. Colors are added through a spray application then coated and tumbled for shine. Injection mold frames are generally less expensive but considered to be lower quality.

The Venice Cafe Red Sun frames are made of a different material known as cellulose acetate. And this material is made from processed wood pulp. This means that unlike most man-made fibres, it comes from a renewable resource and is biodegradable. On top of this, it is also hypoallergenic and very tough. Cellulose acetate is the highest quality plastic material for eyeglasses.

Besides good quality frames, I was also very glad that the lenses are full UV polarized. Do you know that most sunglasses are not fully polarized, even the designer ones? If you're wondering why this is a concern, it is because polarized lenses helps to reduce glare reflected at some angles off shiny non-metallic surfaces such as water. Prolonged exposure to glare from these surfaces can cause ocular problems such as cataracts or even worse, eye cancer.

So kudos to La Sambuca's polarized sunglasses!

And now it's time to try them on!

The Venice Cafe Red Sun shades fit me like a glove! I have a pretty angular face so most square or geometric shades do not look good on me. The shades miraculously reduced the angles of my strong jawline and sat securely and comfortably on my rather flat nose bridge.
