<br />Event Description: (From http://i.cs.hku.hk/~clwang/projects/JESSICA2.html)

JESSICA2 (Java-Enabled Single-System-Image Computing Architecture version 2) is a distributed Java Virtual Machine (DJVM) to support parallel execution of multithreaded Java applications in a networked cluster environment. Implemented as a cluster middleware at the Java virtual machine level for realizing single system image, JESSICA2, makes the whole cluster look as a single machine running a single JVM. With JESSICA2 DJVM, a single Java program can span multiple computing nodes, and enjoy extreme computation power, huge memory space, and strong I/O capabilities.

Dr C.L.Wang has previously spoken at HKJUG event on the project - he would provide an update to the latest development of the project.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Cho-Li Wang received his BS degree in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1985. He obtained his MS and PhD degrees in Computer Engineering from University of Southern California in 1990 and1995 respectively. Dr. Wang is very active in the cluster and grid computing research. He is currently a member of the executive committee for IEEE Task Force on Cluster Computing (TFCC) and IEEE Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (TCPP). He is also a core member of Hong Kong Grid (HKGrid) and Asia-Pacific Grid (ApGrid). Dr. Wang has served as the program committee member for more than 15 international conferences and has been the Program Chair of the 2003 IEEE International Conference on Cluster Computing. He and Dr. Francis Lau co-lead the Systems Research Group (SRG). Their team built the Gideon300 cluster in October 2002, which was ranked #175 onthe TOP500 Supercomputers list (Nov 2002). It was the first largest self-made PC cluster in Hong Kong. Dr. Wang&#39;s research interests include cluster and grid computing, ubiquitous/pervasive computing.

Spring 2.5 continues its established theme of simplicity and power, offering a range of new capabilities that support developers building large, complex, mission-critical enterprise applications. In this session, Paul will be exploring a subset of the new capabilities present in Spring 2.5, along with some of its sister products that have recently been released. Aimed at existing Spring users, this session will introduce new capabilities including automated component scanning, expanded annotated metadata services, and the considerable advancement of convention over configuration in Spring’s web framework.

Whilst these improvements considerably enhance the productivity of application developers and lower long-term maintenance cost, Spring 2.5 also significantly improves the production and runtime experience. Paul will demonstrate some of these production runtime enhancements, including OSGi bundle support and the new Spring Advanced Management Suite (AMS).

Paul’s session will be intensely demonstration oriented, focusing on refactoring an existing Spring 2.0 application to leverage the new Spring 2.5 capabilities. As such, the session will clearly communicate how these improvements reduce the amount of both Java code and XML now required, plus provide solid guidance for attendees on how to approach upgrading their existing Spring 2.0 applications.

Abstract
In the very old day when we wrote Java Applet for web page or standalone Java application, we use AWT to construct User Interface (UI), and then Swing becomes popular, and then Eclipse SWT/RCP claims to be another killer technology. In the mobile world, there is a MIDP UI API. So many UI technologies and standards are out there already, why bother to have yet another one called JavaFX?!

In the JavaOne conference 2007, JavaFX is first introduced to the public as the next killer UI technology. It supports various platform and is designed to simplify and speed up the creation and deployment of high impact UI applications. In this event, Mr. Lee Chuk Munn will introduce this standard and technology to us. He will show us what&#39;s special about JavaFX and demonstrate how simple it is to write JavaFX Script to construct UI for different platforms.

Speaker Biography
Chuk Munn Lee has been programming in the Java language since 1996, when he first joined Sun Microsystems in Hong Kong. He currently works as a senior developer consultant and technology evangelist for Technology Outreach at Sun in Singapore and is a frequent speaker at conferences around the globe. He has spent six years working with key Asia-Pacific independent software vendors (ISVs) to design, prototype, develop, tune, size, and benchmark their applications. An avid gamer, Lee is also creating a 2D isometric Java technology game that is played between two players by email or peer-to-peer network. He graduated in 1987 from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, where his favorite subject was compiler theory.
