The big news at Honolulu Dogfight HQ is the arrival of twin boys. My far far superior half, Jessica is one of the most gifted life creators ever to tread the earth, and I couldn't be more in awe of her than I am right now. I'm a very lucky guy.
bigger art projects will probably take a back seat in the weeks to come, but they won't stop altogether. Here are some post it sketches and a character design that I am just starting to color in photoshop.

Wow! Look at this! Art superstar comic book kingpin Francesco Francavilla did this wonderful piece of fan art of none other than my very own Phantom Skull. I could not be more flattered, nor can I thank him enough. You owe it to yourself to check out at least one of his sites, I personally recommend Pulp Sunday
He's the real deal and if you're not already, you'll be a fan after checking out his stuff.

Here's something I really haven't done to much. I just did this character design and thought I would post the pencils, inks and final color just to show the working process.

You may or may not believe it, but there is ongoing progress on The Phantom Skull. I think I nailed down what I would like to be the back up feature for when this stuff all comes together in book form.
More of that soon. Keep your eyes peeled, thanks for looking and give me a shout if you feel like it.

So, while finishing up the last semester of school, preparing for the imminent arrival of the twins, and a short freelance animation thing getting underway, I was lucky enough to have been asked to make the following stuff for the annual ArtBeat festival. PROOF OF LIFE...
Thought I would post something in defense of the theory that I am NOT a miserable wretch. At least not in the field of comics production. Well at least not as badly as has been said in the past...
Here are some in progress pages, worked on as fresh as last week. The revised and tightened outline and notes has this going on into the 50's as far as episode count, so we're only nearing the halfway. The last half is going to be a blast to draw.
On that topic I have a new illustration in this weeks Phoenix I am pleased with. Check it out HERE!
Also, I have a very fun and very laborious job on the table right now that I am having a great time doing and the results are going to be fantastic as well I feel. More on that later, and sketches and so on. Naturally it means the comics take a hit, but it's a job comic people might like so...coming soon.

A quick update, something noticed, and something done about it...
First and foremost I am sitting down and beginning to rule out some panels on new Phantom Skull pages. It will still be a while, but they're on the way. Secondly, I realized I haven't posted any sketchbook stuff in a long, long time. Below are some warm up sketches I've done the last few days. Every single one of them lays claim to being the least original, or most derivative art work ever. You decide. One I think is actually a college mascot.
It's semi public knowledge now, but my infinitely better half Jess and I are expecting twin boys around the end of June, so things here are joyfully hectic. I dropped a long term project, and am trying to simplify my work life a great deal. The Phantom Skull is a big part of that. And some other comics. I recently cut a rough animatic out of the first episode of the Phantom Skull, that I am itching to animate. More on that later I guess.
Anyway stay tuned...more sketches and Skull-duggery on the way...

And now a few words regarding The Phantom Skull...
There is going to be a brief pause in the action for a bit. When I started this thing I was usually about four weeks ahead of the curve for posting. Work and a whole host of other real world obligations have narrowed that lead down considerably. I'm going to take a breather and get ahead of the game again.
I've received a ton of great emails, and comments and I could not be more pleased. Some have asked if this is a seat of the pants, make it up as I go endeavor and the answer to that is, no. I have a rough outline I've been working from, and I do full well know where it's going and what I think the final panels will look like.
Several of you have asked if this is coming out in book form and if there is a publisher. I want it to be a book, there is no publisher yet. Part of taking a pause here, not only gets me ahead on the strip, but lets me research and maybe get some samples to people that may be interested.
Paul Conrad of the awesome Super Robot Monster blog gave me the best comment via email, saying he wants to be able to hand a book of these strips to his kids, and that has been my absolute goal with this. Simple rollicking adventure stuff that I would have liked when I was younger.
In thinking about this as a potential piece of printed matter, I also realize that it's going to need some additional material. That is to say I have some backup story ideas. Not necessarily Skull stories either, and I may want to fine tune one of those to include in a book.
The Skull will return very soon, probably in a couple of weeks, and the story is going to be racing towards a dramatic conclusion, so stay tuned.
