You can imagine also that people they called Hinonangnon is like a burden road or unfinished road before.

REMEMBERING THE WAITING SHED IN POBLACION

So many memories will come out unto our minds to remembering the Waiting Shed as center attraction on Poblacion, Hinunangan Southern Leyte. While ago we took stand and waiting for bus, motorcycle for hire like habal-habal, trying to hide when rains comes, cheating with our companion and barkadas, classmates and most are hiding ourselves as shelter to rest while we had waiting purposes.

They had lot of people regarding Hinunangnon, travelers, intruders and strangers are witness this popular Waiting Shed. How important that brings comfort and good shelter for everyone who wants travel in the morning afternoon and evening scenario.

Para rubber tree

The Pará rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis), often simply called rubber tree, is a tree belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae and the most economically important member of the genus Hevea. It is of major economic importance because its sap-like extract (known as latex) can be collected and is the primary source of natural rubber.

Description

The tree can reach a height of over 30m (98.4 feet). The white or yellow latex occurs in latex vessels in the bark, mostly outside the phloem. These vessels spiral up the tree in a right-handed spiral which forms an angle of about 30 degrees with the horizontal.

Harvest

Once the trees are 5-6 years old, the harvest can begin: incisions are made orthogonal to the latex vessels, just deep enough to tap the vessels without harming the tree's growth, and the sap is collected in small buckets. This process is known as rubber tapping. Older trees yield more latex, but they stop producing after 26-30 years.

History

The Pará rubber tree initially grew only in the Amazon Rainforest. Increasing demand and the discovery of the vulcanization procedure in 1839 led to a boom in that region, enriching the cities of Belém and Manaus. The name of the tree derives from Pará, the second largest Brazilian state, that contains Belém as capital, mainly city and tech-financial centre.

There had been an attempt made, in 1873, to grow rubber outside Brazil. After some effort, twelve seedlings were germinated at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. These were sent to India for cultivation, but died. A second attempt was then made, some 70,000 seeds being sent to Kew in 1875. About 4% of these germinated, and in 1876 about 2000 seedlings were sent, in Wardian cases, to Ceylon, and 22 sent to the Botanic Gardens in Singapore. Once established outside its native country, rubber was extensively propagated in the British colonies. Rubber trees were brought to the botanical gardens at Buitenzorg, Java in 1883. By 1898, a rubber plantation had been established in Malaya, and today most rubber tree plantations are in Southeast Asia and some also in tropical Africa. Efforts to cultivate the tree in its native South America were unsatisfactory.

Uses

The wood from this tree, referred to as parawood or rubberwood, is used in the manufacture of high-end furniture. It is valued for its dense grain, minimal shrinkage, attractive colour and acceptance of different finishes. It is also prized as an "environmentally friendly" wood, as it makes use of trees that have been cut down at the end of their latex-producing cycle.

One of the country's centers for collection and propagation of rubber clones, the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in Kabacan, North Cotabato, recently released a list of recommended clones of rubber.

The list comprises of the following clones: RRIM 600 (Rb 99-01), RRIM 712, RRIM 901, PB 217 (Rb 99-02), PB 235 (Rb 99-04). PB 260, USM 1 (Rb 99-03), PB 330, and PB 311. Among the new clones, USM 1 (Rb 99-03) has the highest dry rubber yield per year (2.5 tons/ha). PB 330 is also one of the highest yielding clones, recording an average annual yield of 2.38 tons/ha, closely followed by PB 260, producing 2.37 tons/ha per year.

Rubber clones are products of a normal plant breeding technique called clonal propagation.. This technique involves screening and cloning rubber seedlings with favourable traits. These will then be monitored for performance that could take decades. Finally, the best tress will be identified and recommended for propagation and planting. Unselected seedlings yield around 400 kg/ha/year whereas modern clones, produced by generations of breeding cycles, can give commercial yields well over 2000 kg/ha/year. Dry rubber production in the country is estimated to average 77,000 tons per year. Through the adoption of appropriate cultural management practices and use of high-yielding clones, this rate of production gradually increased from a meager yield of less than 0.5 tons/ha in the 1960s. Still, the annual consumption of rubber, at 133,000 tons/ha, exceeds its rate of production. Moreover, according to the Philippine Rubber Industry Master Plan, annual consumption is expected to increase to 170,000 tons from 2001 to 2005. Rubber growers will need to increase productivity to meet the industry's growing demands. The RDE Plantation Crops Network aids in developing strategies that will develop the plantation crop industry into a sustainable and globally competitive venture.

USM is one of the institutional members of the National Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Network on Plantation Crops. The network advocates the use of high-yielding clones as one of the technology promotion and adoption thrusts of the Network.

Discovery of commercial potential

The para rubber tree initially grew in South America. Charles Marie de La Condamine is credited with introducing samples of rubber to the Académie Royale des Sciences of France in 1736. In 1751, he presented a paper by François Fresneau to the Académie (eventually published in 1755) which described many of the properties of rubber. This has been referred to as the first scientific paper on rubber.

When samples of rubber first arrived in England, it was observed by Joseph Priestley, in 1770, that a piece of the material was extremely good for rubbing off pencil marks on paper, hence the name rubber. Later it slowly made its way around England.

South America remained the main source of the limited amounts of latex rubber that were used during much of the 19th century. In 1876, Henry Wickham gathered thousands of para rubber tree seeds from Brazil, and these were germinated in Kew Gardens, England. The seedlings were then sent to Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Indonesia, Singapore and British Malaya. Malaya (now Malaysia) was later to become the biggest producer of rubber. About 100 years ago, the Congo Free State in Africa was also a significant source of natural rubber latex, mostly gathered by forced labour. Liberia and Nigeria also started production of rubber.

In India, commercial cultivation of natural rubber was introduced by the British planters, although the experimental efforts to grow rubber on a commercial scale in India were initiated as early as 1873 at the Botanical Gardens, Calcutta.
The first commercial Hevea plantations in India were established at Thattekadu in Kerala in 1902.
In the 19th and early 20th century, it was often called "India rubber." In 2010, India's natural rubber consumption stood at 0.978 million tons per year, with production at 0.893 million tons; the rest was imported with an import duty of 20%.

Rubber Tree Propagation

Rubber tree planting is now becoming popular in many provinces in Mindanao, particularly in the Central Mindanao region as evidenced by rows of rubber trees lining the roads of the areas. It has been observed that the provinces in the central region concentrated in the planting of rubber trees based on the report of the United States Agency for International Development-Growth with Equity in Mindanao (USAID-GEM) Program. USAID-GEM reported that for the period 2005-2010, overall rubber production has increased by about 25 percent in Mindanao, and went up by 50 percent in the Central Mindanao sub-region. In order to obtain good production of rubber in North Cotabato.

The University of Southern Mindanao recently partnered with the USAID to provide training on rubber tapping and bark management for the farmers in Aleosan town, and in the neighboring municipalities of Libungan and Matalam. The training, which was implemented through the USAID-GEM Program, is part of USAIDs larger efforts to improve the competitiveness of growers across conflict-affected areas in Mindanao, and to enable former combatants of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) to diversify into high-value agriculture production like rubber tree plantation.

USAID reported that in New Panay, Aleosan, the trees, some of them over 60 years old, have witnessed the transformation of this once conflict-affected region into an emerging rubber production hub. New Panay village chieftain Lolita Caputolan said “people started planting rubber here as early as the 1950s. Aleosan’s hilly terrain and agro-climatic conditions make it a good location for rubber plantations.”

It was learned that Caputolan’s father had just started the family’s rubber farm in the 1970s when armed hostilities broke out between two local ethnic groups. “We had to flee to evacuation centers in Libungan and Midsayap. More than once, we had to stay away for two to three years from our village but every time we returned home, we found our rubber trees in relatively good condition,” she recounted. “That’s the thing about rubber trees. They are resilient and need minimal care, unlike other crops,” Caputolan said.

As local economy and security conditions in the area improved over the years, residents focused more on developing their farms – and on realizing income from rubber production.

“Domestic demand for rubber continues to grow,” said Caputolan, a member and business adviser of the New Panay Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative, whose 40 members include former combatants of the MNLF.

According to government data, aggregate rubber production in the Philippines amounted to more than 395,000 metric tons in 2010, with production concentrated in Central and Western Mindanao, particularly in the provinces of North Cotabato, Basilan, and Zamboanga Sibugay.

Caputolan said the training provided farmers with improved techniques in rubber tapping, including the proper angling and thickness of the cut.

LIMASAWA ISLAND

The island was first visited by foreigners with the arrival of Chinese and perhaps Arabic tradesmen. In 1225, the Chinese merchant Chau Ju Kuo described the population of Mazaua as friendly and congenial to trade-relations. On March 28, 1521, the Mazaua's raia Siaiu (as named by Antonio Pigafetta, diarist of Magellan's expedition, and Kolambu, King of Butuan) was visited by Magellan and his fleet of three ships, passing through en route to the Spice Islands. The two leaders maintained very amicable relations, becoming casicasi or blood-brothers on Good Friday, 29 March 1521, second day of Magellan's stay at Mazaua.

According to wayward and superficial history, Limasawa and not Mazaua is where the first ever Mass in the Philippines was celebrated. Thus, Limasawa is famously referred to as "site of the First mass in the Philippines."

Primary and secondary sources point to Mazaua, not Limasawa and not Butuan, as the port where an Easter Sunday mass was held on March 31, 1521. The description of present-day Limasawa does not fit the geologic, geographic, geomorphologic, archaeologic, histriographic categories of Mazaua as described and explained in the eyewitness chronicles of Antonio Pigafetta, Ginés de Mafra, Francisco Albo, The Genoese Pilot, Martín de Ayamonte, as well as the secondhand accounts of Antonio de Brito, Andrés de San Martín, Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas, and Maximilianus Transylvanus. Up to this time, there is still debate on where Mazaua is. See First mass in the Philippines. Even so, no serious scholar today still thinks Limasawa is the port Mazaua.

The Limasawa story was written by a Jesuit missionary, Fr. Francisco Combés, S.J., who had not read a single primary account. His 3-paragraph story of the Mazaua episode does not refer to any kind of mass having been held anywhere in the Visayas or Mindanao. His Limasawa also is not the port where Magellan and his fleet anchored from March 28 to April 4, 1521.

Silago is a small coastal town set at the northernmost part of the province of Southern Leyte, Philippines. The town is composed of only 15 barangays. Silago got her name from the word “murcielago” which is a Spanish term for bat, because of this species' dominance in the locality. Proof to this is the giant bat sanctuary at Barangay Catmon. Traveling through the coastal barangays of the town, one can notice beautiful clean beaches and a structure designed by nature lying in the town’s deep blue sea known as Pelada Rock also locally known as “Batong Dako means huge rock”,

The rock is located just a short distance from the shore of Barangay Laguma and Barangay Salvacion. Riding on a motorboat will take only 5 minutes from those Barangays; or more or less ten minutes from the brown fine clean sand beach of Silago town proper.

Farther north, is a natural rock formation with a length of more or less 50 meters from the shore and about 10 meters wide.

Added to this beauty is the upland of Silago, which displays the town’s picturesque mountains, exuding a distinctive charm and even a mystery. In these mountains is the town’s vast forest, home of the wild pigs locally known as “Baboy Ihas”. Among all the municipalities of the province, Silago is identified to have the biggest forest area.

The municipal tree park is another kind of tourist attraction in the municipality where fresh breeze and songs of the birds make the atmosphere pleasantly unique. On its northern part is a clean and clear river that allows everybody an enjoyable swimming.

Additionally, the different astounding shapes of waterfalls are not an illusion for Silago. In the upper portion of the town, at different locations, are falls that urge one to come and feel the placidity, of the environment, with a very cool and clean water.

Kagut-an falls is more or less 1 kilometer away from the national highway, along Barangay Katipunan. This falls is paired with another falls near its vicinity, locally called as Kagut-an Dako Dos Falls, which possesses an exceptional attraction to all who sees it.

In the same barangay of Silago, is another falls called Kagut-an Gamay falls. The beauty of this falls could be greatly enhanced by a wise and sustainable human intervention.

In Barangay Mercedes of this municipality can be found other falls of different gorgeous impact. Sitio Kawayan Falls has a more or less 1-kilometer distance from Mercedes Barangay Road, with a height of about 10 meters.

Another falls is in Barangay Tubod distinctive in structure with matching cave on its opposite side. Water from this falls, along its way meets the Lanang River flow, which also has its own unique attraction. The beauty of Lanang River would catch the eye of any viewer with a warm invitation to get into it.

Aside from Lanang River, which is located at the town’s mountain barangay, is the Maag River that crosses along the national highway in Poblacion District 1. This river forms like lake that is suited for enjoyable boating recreation. At the mouth of the river is the brown fine clean sand beach of Silago, which is more or less 1 kilometer long.

Rocky Beach Resort is a newly operating beach resort, which is adorned with beautiful stones and clean brown sand, typical for picnics. This resort does not have room accommodations yet, but there are places to stay comfortably in the heart of the town, about more or less 5 minutes away.

Hinunangan is a 3rd class (based on NSCB website as of 31 December 2010 Hinunangan Statistics 2010) municipality in the province of Southern Leyte, Philippines. According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 27,712 a 0.90% growth compared to the 2000 census.

Hinunangan is known as the "Rice Granary of the Province" for its vast plain land that is entirely planted with rice. Hinunangan, one of the key towns of the province, has great potential for tourism because of its beautiful sand beaches and islands.

The town of Hinunangan is also a producer of rattan and wood-based furnitures, abaca handicrafts items, pineapple, vegetables, other forest products, and bamboo furnitures. It has a potential for mineral water and root crops processing and copper mining.

The highest mountain in the province is Mount Nacolod which can also be found in Hinunangan with an elevation of 948 meters above sea level.

HISTORY

In 1521, Magellan recorded sighting Hononganan (Hinunangan) during the voyage in Leyte Gulf. As far back in 1750 Hinunangan was a mid-way station of Boholanos trading in Eastern Leyte. They rested overnight at the mouth of Das-ay River where they moored their boats. A shelter was built for the crews and tenders known as "Hononganan" or Stop-Over.

Thus the name.In 1822, a certain Boholano named Palonoy founded Hinunangan. At this time Silago of the North and Hinundayan and Anahawan on the South were part of Hinunangan.

It was the first place the expedition directed its course to Leyte Island. Again, in 1944, in the greatest naval battle in history the blocking warship of the Liberation waylaid the Japanese Fleet near Hinunangan. Thus, the area in Southern Leyte is the natural frontier of historically significant events in Philippine History.

Hinunangan is also known as a major gateway in Leyte because of its near proximity to Tacloban City. The opening of Abuyog - Silago Road cuts travel time to more than 50 percent, from the previous 6 hours (Tacloban - Hinunangan Route) to less than 3 hours.

It is also the place in Southern Leyte with the most immigrants from Europe and North America. It has a lot of touristic places, as Tahusan, Talisay or the twin islands (known as Cabugan Grande and Cabugan Chico as Pigafetta stated in his account during their travel with Magellan.

The Municipality of Sogod (pronounced ˈsuɡud; Cebuano: Lungsod sa Sogod, Tagalog: Bayan ng Sogod, Waray: Bungto han Sogod) is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Southern Leyte, Philippines. It is located seventy-two (72) kilometers northeast of Maasin City, the capital city of the province, one hundred twenty-six (126) kilometers south of Tacloban City, the regional center of Eastern Visayas, twenty-four (24) kilometers north of Liloan, a major port town that connects Surigao City, and thirty-six (36) kilometers east of Hilongos, another major port town that connects Cebu City.

It is the largest municipality in the province encompassing a total land area of 23,690 hectares or about 236.9 square kilometers followed by the City of Maasin having a total area of 21,165.8 hectares or 211.7 square kilometers. The name of the municipality means "to start", from the Cebuano word, sogod, a fitting name for the municipality as it is experiencing a massive economic growth since the establishment of many industries. According to the 2007 National Statistics Office (NSO) census, it has a population of 39,864 inhabitants.

Its varied landscape is composed of rugged mountain ranges in the northern portion and a flat-plained terrain in the center and southern areas of the municipality. The town has numerous river and creek systems suitable for agriculture it produces rice, corn, copra, tobacco, abaca and root crops. The mining and quarrying business in the Subangdaku River provides the town with an efficient supply of gravel and sand, which are either exported domestically to other neighboring provinces.

The municipality is home to Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) Main Campus, a premier and foremost state university in the province of Southern Leyte, the Saint Thomas Aquinas College (STAC), one of the oldest and leading catholic institutions in the province and in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maasin that served the community since January 6, 1946.

It houses the Agas-Agas Bridge, the country's tallest bridge. It measures thirty (30) stories high or two hundred ninety-two (292) feet above ground. The bridge houses the longest and only zipline in Eastern Visayas in the length of eight hundred eighty (880) meters, established by the province as a tourist attraction. This bridge is by far the tallest pier or column that involves the construction of a three hundred fifty (350) linear meter bridge, with a mix of steel and concrete, supported by two (2) piers from the ground.

Within the bay, the town is the center for trade, commerce and industry.

The municipality of Sogod covers 23,690 hectares or about 236.9 square kilometers in land area. It is situated in the northern portion of the province of Southern Leyte and in the south-central side of Leyte Island, facing the Sogod Bay. It is located 10°23’10 North Longitude and 124°58’48 East Latitude. The town belongs to the province of Southern Leyte. It is approximately seventy-two kilometers (72) from the City of Maasin, the provincial capital of Southern Leyte; one hundred twenty-seven (127) kilometers from Tacloban City, the regional centre of Eastern Visayas and the provincial capital of Leyte; one hundred six kilometers (106) from Ormoc City, the major entry of point of Leyte.

The town is bounded on the north by the municipality of Mahaplag, Leyte, approximately thirty-eight (38) kilometers northbound via the Maharlika Highway; in the east are the municipalities of Silago, Hinunangan, and some portion of the municipality Saint Bernard; in the southeast is the municipality of Libagon, about twenty-two (22) kilometers eastbound via the national highway; facing to the south is Sogod Bay, the only water form that divides the province from west to east; monitoring six kilometers southwest bound lies the municipality of Bontoc; in the west are the towns of Hindang, Hilongos, and several portion of the municipalities of Bato and Inopacan.

It is either bounded by mountain ranges, rivers, creeks, and irrigation canals that run thru the municipality. In the north, the Mahaplag-Sogod boundary line is the provincial boundary line that separates the two provinces: Leyte and Southern Leyte, wherein the mountain slopes serves as a line. In Barangay Kahupian (particularly at Sitio Balintulay), passing by the Agas-Agas Bridge, are two bridges that links Sogod and Mahaplag, Leyte. Beneath these bridges are deep ravenous ridges that are made as a boundary for the two provinces and its people. In the east and west sides of the municipality are much similar to the north side, the mountain slopes serves also barricades from the other municipalities. However, some mountain roads are passable and people from these hinterlands are using these pivotal roads in order to bargain and trade their produce. In the southern part is bounded by rivers and creeks, wherein Santa Cruz creek serves as demarcation line bounded by the municipality of Bontoc and Gakat creek on the southeastern side of the town.

Sogod has mostly plains in the southern portion, making the land suitable for agriculture with rivers abound in the municipality. The most prominent ones are the Subangdaku River, which is situated in the central portion and considered as hazardous, and the other one is the San Francisco River, the river that is the major channel for the Subangdaku River’s sustenance. Its source is found somewhere in the municipalities of Abuyog, Leyte and Mahaplag, Leyte where it is an extension of the Layug River that leads to Mahaplag town and the Cadac-an River of Abuyog town, where is it the mouth of these rivers in the north. Eventually, hard rains contribute to the connection of Subangdaku River and Maag River in the municipality of Silago, Southern Leyte.

While rivers are abundant in the municipality, springs or tubod are literally found in the municipality. Mostly it is found on the barrios, which supplies the water they need for household purposes. The Magaupas Spring in Barangay Pandan and the Banat-e Spring in Barangay San Pedro are the sources of freshwater of the Sogod Water District (SWD), the local distributor of freshwater in Sogod Town Proper.

In the northern part are mountain slopes that are dotted with thick rain forests and serves as a habitat for rare species of flora and fauna.There are three mountain ranges that separates the municipality from the other towns, these are: Baybay to Maasin Cordillera, the Abuyog to Liloan Cordillera and Mahaplag Mountain range. The Baybay to Maasin Cordillera are relatively scattered hills with high mountains situated on the Baybay-Hindang portion and it has varied upland plains, which is inhabited by the locals.

The Abuyog to Liloan Cordillera is somehow different and remote. It is mountainous and somehow regarded as the bounty for endangered animals such as the tarsiers, eagles, deers, monkeys, and others. The mountain range has an altitude of about 2,000 above sea level. It houses the Sogod rainforest, a vast area that is being exploited by loggers because of lumber. Due to massive timber cutting, it caused severe flowing of the Subangdaku River and mudslides to the nearby communities that surrounds the mountainous joint of the municipality. In mid-1980s.

The Philippine Government issued the banning of timber cutting in the entire country, leading to the massive restoration of the forests in the country including Eastern Visayas. Now, the mountains and its environs are slowly restoring its virgin forest by reforestation projects headed by the Local Government Units (LGU) and non-government organizations (NGO). The Mahaplag Cordillera is an arm of the Abuyog to Liloan Mountain Range and has the same characteristics with the other mountain ranges.

Because of the dense forest and isolated by human activities, it is also home to other species of flora and fauna. But, however, the New People’s Army, a communist separatist group that is reckoning havoc since the Marcos era, is actively operating and took camp in the vast hinterlands of the area.

The coastline of Sogod is characterized by black sands on the southeastern portion and in the southwestern side are pebbles and rocks that cover the entire poblacion. However, the length of the coastline of Sogod is small, the bay that surrounds the province is named after the municipality because the town is centrally located at the heart of the bay.

Subangdaku River

Subang Daku River

It is the town’s biggest river lying on the central part of the area that drains to the Sogod Bay. It is considered as the major drainage of the bay together with Divisoria River found in Barangay Divisoria, Bontoc town.

For years, following the floodings of the river, it created an issue over the province. It has been quarried and rechanneled which caused the incidents. After many attempts, the issue remained unsolved.

By description, it can be considered a braided river composed of several channels from near areas that divide and reunite forming an alluvial fan with very wide floodplain. As such, the river usually became hazardous during typhoon after a heavy rain. The river sometime overflows spilling its waters on the low-lying barangays of San Juan and San Vicente and destroyed an ongoing flood control project worth millions of pesos.The river has been known to meander along its course, ever changing its way over time.
During the time it’s flooding, it destructs every side of its course. In 2001, portion of the road and banks in Barangay San Miguel along the river have been destroyed. It hampered the economic activities of the local residents as well as national because the destroyed portion is part of the Philippine National Road.

The local officials blamed the rechannelization and uncontrolled quarrying of gravel and sand at the side of river as the cause of the flood. At a meeting on March 18, 2002, one of the representatives of a government agency alleged that the reason of the incidents of flood and other environmental problems in the river was due to the Philippine Fault System which caused rocks to rumble down. However, the reason was contended because the fault is a geological feature and environmental problems in the province just occurred that time.

In 2007, Governor Damian Mercado and Congressman Roger Mercado, together with Mayor Sheffered Tan, order the complete rechannelization of the river with dikes to protect the barangays that touches the river namely: Suba, San Isidro, San Miguel and Concepcion, following to the plans of former Governor Rossette Yniguez-Lerias to rehabilitate the said river.

Today, the dike is not strong enough to maintain the wild rage of the course of the river, although it stands but the foundation of the dike is weak and it is made of rocks that are concreted and formed into a barricade against the river (grouted riffraff).

An irrigation dam was constructed beneath the mighty Subangdaku River, to control the flow of the current to the farmlands in the southeastern portion of the municipality. It was destroyed during hard rains occurred last January 2011.

Agas-Agas Bridge

Agas Agas Bridge, the highest bridge in the country, at Barangay Kahupian as part of Maharlika Highway.

The Agas-Agas Bridge is situated in Southern Leyte, the highest bridge ever built in the Philippines.[44] The bridge straddles between two mountains and traverses along the Mahaplag-Sogod (south-central) section of the Maharlika Highway. It provides a significant link to motorists traveling from Luzon to Mindanao. This bridge is by far the tallest pier or column that the DPWH has constructed with a help from the Japanese Government. It involves the construction of a 350 linear meter bridge, with a mix of steel and concrete, supported by two piers from the ground and has a height of 292 feet above ground.

Residents said that the Agas-Agas section of the Maharlika Highway in Southern Leyte is known for being prone to slides during heavy rains. Since it is situated in a mountainous area, it is regularly reported that movements of loose soil or landslides take place whenever it rains heavily, much more when typhoon strikes the province. Thus, the viaduct was constructed in 2006 primarily to help motorists avoid the mountainous sections that are prone to landslides and road slips and prevent life and property losses.

Seeing its high tourism potential the Department of Public Works and Highways , the executive department which is responsible for all safety of projects in the filed of public works and roads, submitted to the President Gloria Arroyo, a plan to turn the Php 1,024,000 billion bridge into a haven for sports enthusiasts who are into bungee jumping, paramotor, downhill skateboarding and zipline rapelling and other extreme sports. Seeing the panoramic beauty of the mountains and rivers around it, then-President Arroyo had ordered that a bungee jumping platform be constructed along the bridge as well as other tourists amenities.

Zipline Southern Leyte

On April 11, 2011,The newly completed construction of the much-awaited zip line, an environment friendly tourist attraction, has now become an added feature of Agas-agas Bridge, the tallest bridge in the Philippines located in Sogod, Southern Leyte.

A soft opening of Zip Southern Leyte, is the first tandem zipline facility in Eastern Visayas, will be officially opened to the public on Friday, Provincial Governor Damian G. Mercado said in his letter invitation to PIA Southern Leyte.

The zip line extreme sports facility is the typical Public Private Partnership (PPP) undertaking by the provincial government of Southern Leyte and a local investor, Edwin Sakdalan, who is based in Camp Sabros, Digos City, Provincial Tourism Officer Nedgar Garvez said to PIA. PPP is a priority project.

On the same occasion, the provincial government has also scheduled for the groundbreaking ceremony of the planned Provincial Pavilion at the vicinity of Agas-agas Bridge in Barangay Kahupian, Sogod, he said.

From Maasin City, a motorcade will commence at the Provincial Capitol at Agas-agas Bridge and converge at Sogod Suba Junction road for the motorcade coming from Libagon, Pacific and Pana-on municipal and provincial officials, he further said.

The Southern Leyte Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SLCCI) has identified the construction of zip line among the four tourism hubs, namely, the Canopy Walk in the virgin forests of Silago, dive sites of San Francisco and Padre Burgos and the animal park in Danao Forest Park in Maasin City, SLCCI President Engr. Robert Castañares disclosed to PIA earlier.

Two radio stations, DYSL (Government) an AM and FM station operating in SLSU Campus, Barangay San Roque, and the DYSC 101.1 (owned by the Radyo Natin Network) an FM station that is operating also in Barangay San Roque, serves the locals with programs and news. Print media is also present in the municipality. There are two provincial newspapers which are the Southern Leyte Times (English) and the Southern Leyte Balita (Cebuano). The newspapers are based in the capital city of Maasin and gives accurate and constructive news on the province and the neighboring Leyte province. Other leading newspapers have reached the town before the establishment of provincial newspapers providing the news from the entire nation and in the world.

Unfortunately, the Municipality of Sogod pays no attention to the sites found in the town. There are falls, a lake and a cave system, beaches and hotels. But accommodations are plenty to choose from and found at the vicinity of the poblacion.

The Pasanon Falls and River in Barangay Dagsa, Lum-an Falls in Barangay Lum-an, Lake Lanao and Springs in Barangay San Juan, Subangdaku River in Barangays Suba and San Miguel, man-made lake in Barangay Malinao, Labong Cave in Barangay Javier, Magapso Beach in Barangay Maac, Black Sand Beaches in Barangay Consolacion and Prima, Cabadoy and Palanca Pebble Beaches in Barangay San Jose are one of the few sites that the municipality can offer. But some of these sites are in ruins, endangered or rather unexplored by human activities.

In the fields of infrastructure and agro-tourism, the Agas-Agas Bridge is famous and considered as the highest bridge in the Philippines. It stands 85 meters tall or 1,000 feet high and spans 300 meters connecting the Maharlika Highway. It is built so, because the area is prone to landslides and often many accidents occurred in this narrow corridor with a deep ravine on its side. Today, the bridge carries visitors to visit the area and government officials have plans to make it as a tourist attraction. Some bridges like the Subangdaku Bridge is regarded as one of the longest bridge in the entire province and up to now another bridge is constructed to minimize the travel time for the commuters traveling along the arterial highways. Along the bridge, one can see a dam that controls the river current when bad weather occurs. Also, CTL Farms, named in-memory of the owner's son Carlo Tirso Luzon, in Barangay Concepcion and La Caridad Farms in Barangay Buac Gamay offers wide array of beautiful flora and fauna. The farms also offer many activities, either you can go fishing or roam around and enjoy the fields of green by affordable prices.

In 1521, Magellan recorded sighting Hononganan (Hinunangan) during the voyage in Leyte Gulf. As far back in 1750 Hinunangan was a mid-way station of Boholanos trading in Eastern Leyte. They rested overnight at the mouth of Das-ay River where they moored their boats. A shelter was built for the crews and tenders known as "hononganan" or stopover. Thus the name.In 1822, a certain Boholano named Palonoy founded Hinunangan. At this time Silago of the North and Hinundayan and Anahawan on the South were part of Hinunangan.

Hinunangan also is the one of kind Rice Granary of Southern Leyte.
