Exclusive Interview With Michael Bruno Of Honor Society: 'Deserted' Is The Next New Song

Ladies please hold your 'fangirling' until the interview is over :) Mike Bruno, the lead singer of Honor Society, gave Buzznet the inside scoop on tour, the next demo they're releasing and the story behind the song's accompanying artwork!

I first met the gents of Honor Society back when they were on the Jonas Brothers tour. They're some of the most down to earth guys I've ever met in the music industry. I've seen them live 6 times and they just keep getting better-- constantly evolving as musicians.

Gabbie: Would you mind explaining what the Honor System is, for your newer fans?

Mike: The Honor System is basicaly us giving away free music to our fans. We did it for about 9 weeks last year, where we gave away one free song a week. Basically the deal is, we'll give you free music if you guys as our fans spread the word to those who haven't heard Honor Society yet. The first time, it went over really well and we brought it back. This time it's a little different--you get the song by liking our facebook page and when we get 2,000 more likes on our page we'll release the next track. We're about halfway there

Gabbie: "Obsession" is the newest demo you released via the Honor System. Was it a song you had already had written?

Mike: You know what, it was a brand new song. When we got off tour at the end of the year, I got sick and had the flu. Even though I wasn't feeling well, I still had all these new songs bubbling up. The guitar riff for "Obsession" was one of the first things that came to me. I showed it to the guys and they loved it and we built the rest of the song around it. It took maybe a week or two. It has been awesome, the fan response has been excellent. It's a little different sound for us, it's all still us though.

Gabbie: Yeah I feel like it has this western vibe to it.

Mike: Yeah, totally!

Gabbie: Everyone is loving the tour documentaries by Ruby Summer--and the fans want to know what it's like in the studio.

Mike: Maybe we should have Ruby Summer come into the studio, so you guys can see what it's like. It's probably more mellow then people think. We kind of get in the zone. You know on tour, there's a lot of joking around that happens.We're so focused on getting the vibe right and if the song is more serious or even if it's fun, we don't want to be too jokey. The vibe is kind of mellow to be honest. It's not always all four of us in the studio sometimes its me and Jay. Sometimes it's Jay and Andy, or me and Alexs.

Gabbie: And you actually did the painting for the demo. How long did it take you and what did you have in mind? Because it kind of looks like a Picasso painting, not going to lie.

Mike: You just made me lose my breath with the Picasso thing. He's amazing and one of the best ever. But I appericate that you think that it has some of that flavor. I use to take art lessons after school when I was a kid. I was always interested in drawing and painting and all of the arts, really. It wasn't my first time painting, but I havent done it in a while. The whole painting took about 35 minutes. The guys kept asking me what was I going to paint and I kind of didn't want to think about it. I just wanted to put the song on and feel the inspiration. There was prob a good 10 minutes where I was just staring at the canvas. I just wanted to feel the vibe of the song.

Mike: I'm actually really impressed that you got the Picasso vibe, because some people are like, "wow Michael, you can't paint a face," but when i think of "Obsession," it kind of means you're a little crazy for something or out of your mind. So when I started painting I wanted it to be more of an abstract face.

Gabbie: I think it's really good! I wish i could paint!

Mike: Thank you

Gabbie: You guys are about 1,000 likes away from your goal. Fans are going crazy and posting flyers and telling friends and family. How does that make you feel?

Mike: It's awesome. We want the likes quickly, but hopefully we won't get the likes today because the song isn't done. We appreciate the fans so much even when the spotlight isn't on us because they keep us exciting and relevant. It just means the world to us, that they are printing out flyers and pushing the cause.

Mike: If you want we could give Buzznet the exclusive, we haven't told anyone what the track is called.

Gabbie: Yes please! That was my next question

Mike: Just so you know, you will be the first person to be told! The new song will be called "Deserted." It was another song that came to us while we were all not feeling well after tour. You know, on tour once one person gets sick, everyone gets sick.

Gabbie: You were all kind of laying there dying and you just came up with a song.

Mike: Yeah kind of. I came to the tabel with "Obsession," while Jay and Alex's started the "Deserted" one and then I added the lyrics and melody to it.

Gabbie: And you're still working on it, but can you give me 3 words that describes the sound?

Mike: It's a little slower then "Obsession" but it's really emotional. I would stay it's emotinal, its bigger then "Obsession" sounded and it has a little bit of a dreamy quality to it.

Gabbie: I can't wait to hear it! Are the rest of the guys fighting over who is going to paint next?

Mike: It's funny that you said that because, kind of, yes. I think, the next one is going to be Alex's.

Gabbie: He's pushing for it.

Mike: Yeah he's pushing and he will probably do the same thing with video and everything

Gabbie: Are you going to stick with the 2,000 likes everytime or are you going to raise it?

Mike: Wow you're good. It's a good question. Not sure, let's see how long this one takes. If we feel like this recording could take longer we might bump up the likes but we don't want to make it too hard.

Gabbie: Are we going to be hearing these song on tour?

Mike: You know will we play them live, definitely. Will they make the next record? Maybe, maybe not. That's the exciting element to it--these are songs that might not ever make a record, so it's like get them while they're available.

Gabbie: Everyone wants to know, are you guys working on a tour?

Mike: I know! Believe me, nobody wants to know more then us. Some touring is in the works. We're talking pretty much everyday with our booking agent. Were trying to find the right tour. We might be opening up for someone bigger which would be exciting, or another headling or co-headling. As soon as we know.. we'll let buzznet know first.

If you are a music-lover, like myself, who asked for physical copies of CDs instead of gift certificates to download them digitally this Christmas, you may have found yourself in shock. As I went to the mall to pick up CDs to give as gifts, I was floored to find that every music store had gone out of business! F.Y.E. and Borders, two of my go-to stops in the mall, had closed. I decided to make a trip to Target, since they have been known to have a good selection of CDs for a very reasonable price, and I was, again, shocked to find they were down to only TWO isles with a very small variety of genres and artists. With digital music downloading becoming so popular, it is noticeably hurting the music industry and record sales. Two popular, hard-working bands have recently independently released their own music, with the hopes that fans will help stimulate their success and purchase the albums to support the band.

The Maine, an alternative rock band from Tempe, Arizona have been featured on MTV, toured with bands such as Taking Back Sunday and All Time Low, and just released their third studio album,Pioneer, in December. They are currently signed to Warner Brothers Records and have released one album with the company titled Black And White. After a difference in agreement on song choices with the label, the guys decided to take the recording process into their own hands and create Pioneer under the band's label, Action Theory Records, and have it distributed by Warner.

"We have been a band for five years and this record means the absolute world to us," lead-singer John O'Callaghan says to a sold-out crowd in Los Angeles. "Knowing that you guys will be here for us has really kept us going." The Maine genuinely listens and connects with their fans, who have helped them grow as musicians and supports them in all of their endeavors. Despite the rocky decline in the music industry, their album Pioneer currently holds the Number 23 spot on the Top 100 Alternative Albums on iTunes and debuted at Number 90 on the Billboard 200 in its first week.

When you go on tour with the hottest pop band in the land, lay a track with Timbaland, and appear on a hit MTV show, you know you've made it. The guys from Honor Society have done all of those things. After gaining a huge fanbase on a summer world tour with the Jonas Brothers in 2010, working and touring with Timbaland, and releasing a studio album under Hollywood Records called Fashionably Late, Honor Society achieved a lot of deserved success in a short amount of time. For their third album, the guys decided they wanted to go back to their roots and release a continuation of their first extended preview album, A Tale Of Risky Business, which was released in 2008. "We had a ton of creative freedom on this record," lead singer Michael Bruno told me. "Our album is like a story. When it came to the music, we made sure that it all flowed together." In its first week, A Tale Of Risky Business Part 2 reached number 29 on Billboards Independent Album Charts.

The Maine and Honor Society are just two of many bands that have worked their way to prosper in the music industry, and have shown great success in performing, recording, and gaining a fanbase. Continue to support your favorite artists and bands by purchasing their full-lengths albums. As easy and tempting it is to download songs for free, your contributions will help put "food on their tables," as the guys from The Maine have said jokingly to their fans. If the fate of the music industry is going digital, so be it. Just be sure to help out the bands you want to continue hearing more music from.

Honor Society Year in Review

Honor Society kicked off 2011 with a performance at the Americana in Glendale as part of X to the TXT. Thursdays with Honor Society were going strong and they made an appearance or two on Cambio.

In February we found out Honor Society would perform as part of Family Gras in New Orleans at the ends of the month. The guys hung out at the Jordin Sparks Experience and we tried to get Honor Society on The Seven.

In March, Honor Society performed at Night of Generosity. Thursdays with Honor Society continued.

A new Honor Society street team was launched in April, Honor Society was featured as a sticker on GetGlue.com, the guys did a show with The Cab, honorsocietymusic.com got a new look and the Wherever You Are Tour 2011 was announced.

May kicked off with the first 5 Wherever You Are tour dates being announced in CA and AZ. We got to go behind the scenes with Honor Society and Steven Taylor. Word got out that the first 50 people to buy tickets would get a M&G with ALL the bands on the tour - not only Honor Society but Action Item and Katelyn Tarver as well. It was also announced that select shows would also have after parties!

We found out in June that Sunderland and I Love Monsters would also be performing on the Wherever You Are tour at select dates. Thursdays with Honor Society continued. LA had a PPP. There Wherever You Are tour kicked off and we were treated to some new songs off the upcoming Honor Society EP. The month closed out with us trying to help Honor Society crash XL 106.7's Red Hot and Boom!

The Wherever You Are tour continued through July. Honor Society also performed as a part of The Grove's Summer Concerts. Mid-July Honor Society performed at a Fashion Show in NYC. The month ended with a performance at the Stoney Clover pop up shop!

In August, there was a secret show for Mike's birthday. The guys were on Z100 and also KIIS Weekend Mixtape.

In September, Honor Society performed at TJ Martell Family Day in California. The guys held a Fashionably Late 2 year chat. We found out that the new EP would be called "A Tale of Risky Business Part 2" and got treated to some behind the scenes videos to the making of Fashionably Late.

October brought us the much anticipated release of A Tale of Risky Business part 2. The guys did a CD Release party in New York City. The guys did a cover of Jane Says which even ended up on the Jane's Addiction Facebook page! The guys were featured in USA Today and the Rock The Red Kettle tour was announced. The guys also shot a music video for Spread the Love in New York City and invited fans to participate in the filming.

November kicked off the Rock The Red Kettle tour. A Tale of Risky Business Part 2 debuted on the Billboard charts at 133. The guys used "Flowd" as a way to interact with fans while on tour. The Spread the Love music video premiered.

The Rock The Red Kettle tour continued through December, with a special show at Universal City Walk with Hanson and other bands. Hurricane was in rotation on Sirius XM's Morning Mash Up. We were reminded that Honor Society does not have personal facebook pages. Honor Society and Salvation Army released a couple of videos of the guys doing charity work before their shows on the tour. The first 2 parts of the Honor Society tour documentary by RubySummer was released.
