Hello, everyone! I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday weekend, I know I sure did. Ironically, given the chapter we are about to discuss, I was about to write that now is time to get back to the daily grind.

Interesting.

But, I’ll ponder that later.

For now, if you are new to the book club, please be sure to check out the details of participating here. You can also catch up on previous posts by following the same link.

Otherwise, let’s get started.

Summary

Women Food and God, Chapter four, It’s not about the weight but it is not not about the weight.

Once again, my highlighter was out in full force on this one. And my take on the chapter is simple and sums up almost the entire viewpoint of my blog.

The issues we have with food and our bodies aren’t about the food or our weight and we only compound the original problems by becoming overweight – especially to a point where it is physically uncomfortable to live. Resolving the weight won’t solve the problem no matter what the fantasies we have created in our heads have told us. The only thing that solves the problem is actually living our lives, feeling what we feel and being present and aware in everything we do.

Geneen writes about how some people turn this work into an excuse to binge and therefore gain weight as a result. We take that notion that it isn’t about the weight too far and just further numb ourselves with food. She writes:

When you take the charge away, all that’s left is a no-big-deal piece of cherry pie. And when you finish the pie, the that that had nothing to do with the pie – that drove you to it- is still there.

She further goes to tell us that happiness does not lie within being thin. Or rich. Or in the perfect job. Or in the perfect relationship. And that we only use those things as drugs to cope with what life is really about.

The bottom line, whether you weigh 340 pounds or 150 pounds, is that when you eat when you are not hungry, you are using food as a drug, grappling with boredom or illness or loss or grief or emptiness or loneliness or rejection. Food is only the middleman, the means to an end. Of altering your emotions. Of making yourself numb. Of creating a secondary problem when the original problem becomes to uncomfortable.

Ah, but then we have that I just like food response. The one that drives me personally bat shit crazy to hear.

When you like something, you pay attention to it. When you like something- love something- you take time with it. You want to be present for every second of the rapture.

Overeating does not lead to rapture. It leads to burping and farting and being so sick that you can think of anything but how full you are. That’s not love; that’s suffering.

Here, here, Geneen.

Weight is what happens when you use food to flatten your life.

The chapter progresses to the story of a women who is in a job she hates but needs to stay in because in order to “get where she is going” she has to start at the bottom. To cope with her misery, she eats and writes Geneen for advice on how to deal.

Geneen writes about the options and says, in a nut shell, that sometimes we have to do things we don’t like and that, once again, the best remedy for that is just being where you are, embracing how you feel. You can also bolt, but as we learned last week, that doesn’t do us any good either. So, we arrive back at just living the life we live.

There is a whole universe to discover between “I’m feeling empty” and turning to food to make it go away.

But staying with the emptiness-entering it, welcoming it, using it to get to know ourselves better, being able to distinguish the stories we tell ourselves about it from the actually feeling itself – that’s radical.

Imagine not being frightened by any feeling. Imagine knowing that nothing will destroy you. That you are beyond any feeling, any state. Bigger than. Vaster than. That there is no reason to use drugs because anything a drug could do would pale in comparison to knowing who you are.

And now, we move onto those thin fantasies.

It’s not about he weight. It’s not about the goal. It’s not about being thin or being someone special or getting there. Those are fantasies in your mind- and they are all in the future, a future that never comes.

Ever noticed that?

You will stand up. Walk around. Get root canals. Open the refrigerator door. Sleep. Feel happy. Feel devastated. Feel lonely. Feel loved. Get old. Die.

And the then the weight.

If you keep slapping another problem on top of the freshness of life itself, all you see is what you’ve slapped on to it. You cannot ignore a problem just because it is one you’ve manufactured.

If you keep using food as a drug, if your life becomes about your weight, you miss everything that is not related to your weight problem. You die without ever having lived.

And still, the bottom line is this:

You already have everything you need to be content. Your real work, despite the corporate ladder you are climbing, is to do whatever it takes to realize that. And then it won’t matter if you’re someone special or no one in particular because you’ll be fully alive in every moment-which is, I imagine all you ever wanted from going place to be someone.

Or from being thin.

My Reaction

Well, I think that in this one chapter, Geneen sums up everything I have learned in my personal journey.

Everything.

And everything I want my readers and clients to learn from me.

Everything.

I’ve used food, drugs, sex, money, dieting, over-exercise, internet surfing – all of it to check out of life as I knew it.

And just yesterday, my dearest and oldest friend contacted me out of the blue. The first true friend that I was ever able to just be myself with and live in the moment I was in. We hadn’t spoken to each other since my brother passed away almost six years ago.

We were reminiscing about our past, one that goes back about 20 years, and I realized how checked out of life I once was when she told the story of visiting me when I was in my early twenties. I didn’t remember a minute of it.

Not a minute.

My dearest and oldest friend, the memories were just wiped away because I was completely checked out of my life at the time.

It made me feel like a bad friend. The one who let those precious moments slip away.

And as we chatted further, I told her my deep dark secrets about this journey I’ve been on. She accepted me and told me that I was back to the original person she grew to know and love. The person that could make anyone laugh just by being herself.

Just now, as the tears roll down my face, my heart aching for those years that I smothered, I realize what a remarkable journey this has been.

People often tell me that I am insightful, wise, intuitive.

And my response to that isn’t that I am somehow evolved or enlightened. My response is that I am present.

And the less I check out of myself, the more I am able to come into who I am. I am perfectly me and that is all I need to be happy.

“Food and love. We begin eating compulsively because of reasons that have to do with the kind and amount of love that is in our lives or that is missing from our lives. If we haven’t been loved well, recognized, understood, we arrange ourselves to the shape of our situations. We lower our expectations. We stop asking for what we need. We stop showing the places that hurt or need comfort we stop expecting to be met. And we begin to rely on ourselves and only ourselves to provide sustenance, comfort and pleasure. We begin to eat. And eat. ”

What a fantastic week it has been around here. I have lots of exciting things going on and lots of awesome posts from around the blog-o-sphere to share with you!

I launched a new site design and think I have most of the kinks worked out so if you read in a reader or by email, please pop over and check it out. If you click over from a reader, also be sure to check out the design of the home page, I really love it and think it looks super cool. The new design also includes a second navigation menu with lots of goodies for you to see.

I have also added a must reads page which includes the posts that I feel have been most helpful to my readers thus far as well as a collection of my most popular recipes.

Additionally, I updated the resources page for anyone who is just starting out on healing their relationship with food and their bodies.

And last but not least, I finally jumped on the facebook fan page bandwagon and I would appreciate it if you would take the time to like me ;) Honoring Health Wellness Fanpage!!

There is a little trouble in paradise though, for some reason, whenever I comment on blogs, they are going to spam. I am not sure why this is but I have also noticed that a lot of “real” comments are going to my spam box. So, I encourage you to check your spam box for comments because there can be good ones in there! I have emailed the spam people and hopefully, it will be resolved soon

I also published a new recipe page that I would love for you to check out.

Coconut Flour Pancakes

Enough about me. Let’s talk about you’ve been doing.

I’m a crybaby, not an eater is an awesome post from Mary about how she has embraced her inner cry baby and as a result isn’t relying on food to cope anymore. Three cheers to Mary, I love me a good cry.

Eat, Move, Write wrote a great post about how to find your blog voice and Lisa wrote an equally great post about not being a food blogger.

My dearest friend, Jen, did a wonderful interview about how she came to the intuitive eating movement intuitively.

Rachel wrote a touching post about how life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies how she gets through it.

Margarita wrote an awesome post about beating the bad body image days. She gives some real life tips that work along with a reflection on what she does to beat them herself. Mara also shares a post on ending negative self talk. These girls know the deal.

Joy shares with us her reflection on what could be worse than negative thinking. She talks about the ole guilt monster about feeling and thinking negatively.

Major props to my friend Steff for speaking out against the big bad D word. Go Steff. Tell it like it is.

Val shares her thoughts on what it is like to feel like you don’t fit into the “healthy living” blog-o-sphere. An honest look at the niche around us.

Heather wrote a touching post about an awesome lesson in marriage.

Mish stands up against the tactics we, and some “healthy living” bloggers, use to keep ourselves from eating. She questions those behaviors and most importantly, the impact such behaviors will have on our children one day. Popular blogger or not, what does rubber banding your food really mean?

This last link may be out of place here but I had to share it none the less. My husband and I have been dreaming about re-doing our kitchen and have exactly no cash to do so. Well, this post about a shoestring budget kitchen makeover has had me dreaming all week. I want. I want. I want. I shall manifest it.

Now that is a lot of link love.

What did you do amazing this week? Share some links in the comments!

Recently, Rachel wrote a post about owning it and invited her fellow bloggers to own something they aren’t necessarily ashamed of yet haven’t ever really talked about on their blogs. Well, as you all know, I am really open here on my corner of the internet and I racked my brain for what I needed to own that was relevant to the context of my blog. And then, Melissa wrote about the kind of family she comes from and a major light bulb went off in my brain. I know what I need to own.

I am, for the most part, estranged from my family.

Yep, that’s right.

And I own it.

I have mentioned my family from time to time and with the exception of the book club posts, I try not to really talk about it much anymore because I would rather focus on the present. But, the thing is, one of the major beliefs I have about health includes having healthy relationships and it is something I have wanted to write about to in order to help others. I’ve avoided writing about relationships at all because I have been worried that no one would understand the fact that I maintain very little contact with my family.

On purpose.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love my family and don’t want anything terrible to happen to any of them but that does not change the fact that those relationships remain toxic for me. Despite my efforts in trying, I have not been able to maintain relationships with most of them and remain healthy. And you know how I feel about that.

So, here it is.

I don’t come from one of those happy, shiny families either. I come from a toxic, non-supportive, belittling family.

And no – it won’t be fun to spend Christmas with them.

And no – they might not come around.

And no – I’m done trying.

And I’m cool with that.

Relationships are hard.

But toxic ones are pointless.

And sometimes, in order to move forward, we have to let some of them go. And I’m sorry, but I’m not sorry that for me, that means family, too.

Have you ever had to let go of relationships with family in order to move on with your life?

OK, back to regularly scheduled programing, Welcome, Rebecca!

“Today is going to be the day I run four miles”, I thought one morning back in July.

I was determined.

I grabbed my water bottle, laced up my shoes, and headed out the door.

As a fairly new runner, I was still running on the treadmill. For a long time, I didn’t own good shoes, so I thought running on the treadmill was the safest bet. I was wrong. Turns out you need good shoes no matter where you run. I started having problems with my inner right ankle when I ran more than two miles. At the time I was working at a running specialty store, and decided to get fitted for shoes. I found out that I over-pronate and needed a mid-stability shoe.

After I started running with my new shoes, the problem went away for a little while, and then came back a few weeks later. On that particular day in July, I decided to ignore it, and pushed through the four miles.

Bad idea.

The inside of my ankle hurt more than ever.

I decided to take a couple days off from running, and didn’t realize at the time that continuing to do any physical activity would make my ankle worse. A couple days after I originally hurt my ankle, I went to a Pi-Yo class (pilates/yoga).Something I did in that class made the pain in my inner ankle spread to the top of my foot, and up and down my outside ankle. I finally decided to take some time off from working out completely, and made a sports medicine appointment.

On August 9th, I walked into the office expecting the worse. I had been in a ridiculous amount of pain for 3 weeks by then, and thought the doctor was going to tell me that I shouldn’t be running at all. Turns out, I have ankle tendinitis. The doc said no running until my follow-up appointment on Aug. 30 and that I needed to get Superfeet inserts.

Like anyone who is forced out of a routine because of a sports injury, I’ve felt angry and frustrated at times. I even broke down once and wrote a letter on my blog telling myself that I am beautiful no matter what.

But overall, I still feel fabulous about myself. So, if you’re suffering from an injury that has kept you from maintaining your normal routine, and you’re feeling a little down about yourself, here are some things you can do to feel better about the awesome person you really are, inside and out:

Reach out to friends and family. In my case, the blogging community has been a major help. There’s no better way to feel better about yourself than to open up to a close friend or family member. I promise, you’ll get the support and love you need and deserve.

Read the Operation Beautiful book and blog or post an Operation Beautiful note. I feel better right away when I open the book and see tons of motivating and encouraging notes from women just like me. Whenever I’ve having a bad day, I post a note in a bathroom or another random place. Just knowing that someone is going to see my note makes me feel empowered and strong.

Know that your body is trying to tell you something. You need to rest. You need to heal. It’s your body’s way of protecting you. Be good to your body, and it will be good to you.

Realize that beauty is from the inside out. While you may not be feeling particularly great on the outside, if you feel great on in inside, that will shine through everything you do.

The great news is, since this post was written her doctor has given her permission to run again!

What do you do to boost your spirit when you can’t get out and do what you love?

Not too long ago, Rebekah asked me a couple of questions on twitter about my personal challenges and what hold others back from being successful with intuitive eating. I previously wrote a post about what I still struggle with and in light of all the comments on yesterdays book club post, I decided to answer the second question today.

The most common reason people give up on intuitive eating is because they gain weight.

Reasons People Gain Weight with Intuitive Eating

They use intuitive eating as an excuse to binge – For many, they have been depriving themselves for so long with the diet and binge cycle that when they learn that they can eat “whatever they want” they go balls to the wall and binge. And binge. And binge.

*raises hand*

Intuitive eating is not an excuse to binge.

However, for some, this may just be part of the process and a necessary step in a very long journey of healing. When we have depriving ourselves and we start to eat the things we enjoy again, our brains kick into survival mode, like cavemen and cave women.

Feast or Famine.

And the only way to stop that pattern from happening is to ride it out. It is possible that it can also come in waves, especially as you go through the phase of making peace with food. In order to be able to get to the stage of really listening to your body, you have to settle your mind.

And this may lead to gaining weight.

They are not in tune with their hunger signals – Similar to the first reason, many people struggle with knowing what their hunger signals are. If you don’t know what hunger or fullness feels like, it can be really hard to work within those parameters of intuitive eating. You may find using a food mood journal along with the hunger scale to help you determine what your signals are.

The bottom line on hunger is that if we consistently eat outside of our hunger signals, we will gain weight. Every now and then is not a big, no pun intended, deal. If you overeat at lunch, if you are really listening to your hunger signals, you will notice that you get hungry for dinner later than usual. And, if you had to delay lunch for whatever reason, you may find yourself hungrier and able to eat more than usual. Your body is wise and knows exactly how much you need to eat and will help you along the way if you are really tuning in.

No, really.

It does.

Another caveat to that is when you eat tons of foods that chemically confuse our bodies, especially things like high fructose corn syrup, it can be virtually impossible to listen to your body. Those sorts of foods prevent our bodies from sending the proper hunger and fullness signals. Now, once again, it is important to make peace with ALL food in order for intuitive eating work for you in the long term so eating those types of foods may be an important part of your process. (see point number one)

They need to gain weight in the first place – For some that come to intuitive eating, they are either underweight or at a weight that is lower than what is best for their bodies. The fact is, we all come in a variety of shapes and sizes and the ideal we have set in our society is much too low and not attainable for the long term for anyone.

If you are at a weight that is a struggle to maintain, in that you can’t eat normally and/or you have to exercise excessively to keep the weight off, you may gain weight with intuitive eating. But in this case, it is a biological need to be healthy.

For those that are in recovery from an easting disorder, it is very important that you work with your treatment team to work through this otherwise, you may relapse.

The intuitive eating process can be a long one, it isn’t instant like diets are. If you want instant gratification, intuitive eating isn’t for you. Though, I would challenge you to question why you would want a temporary fix rather than a life long solution.

But, I digress.

As you can see, acceptance and trust are the only ways to get through these road blocks. And when the going gets tough, you have to hang on. You have to believe that you can do this, that you are strong and that your body really does know best.

You may give up and go back to dieting. But once you have that taste of freedom from food, you’ll lose faith in the process of dieting and start to put more and more faith in you and your body.

And when that happens, the road blocks won’t matter.

Have you started the process of intuitive eating and given up due to weight gain?

What was the reason behind the gain and do you see how just accepting that can be an important part of the process?

Here we are, at week three of the virtual book club and I am so excited that you all are loving it as much as I am. For those of you that are new to the book club, feel free to jump in at anytime. If you haven’t read the book, no worries, there is plenty of inspiring information in the posts and especially in the comments so dive right in. Here is what you have missed so far:

Women Food and God, Chapter One – About God – Geneen writes about what she means by the term God and I, as well as many others, chime in with reactions to that and what God has meant in our lives.

Women Food and God, Chapter Two – Ending the War – Geneen writes about the battle we have with food and what it really represents. Check out the comments because there is some good, juicy stuff there.

*If you want to chime in on previous weeks, please do so in the correct post so that others will be on the same page about what you are saying.

The Technical Stuff

The Intention

Today, we are going to discuss Chapter Three of Women Food and God by Geneen Roth. The intent of this book club is that we discuss one chapter per week so that we have plenty of time for the information to percolate and sink in. If you have read beyond chapter three, please refrain from discussing any of the other chapters out of respect for those who want to go chapter by chapter, myself included. If you have not read Chapter three, feel free to join the conversation anyway.

Staying Connected to the Conversation

I have threaded comments enabled meaning that you can reply to others by clicking the reply link under the person’s comment. Also note that you will be emailed anytime someone responds to one of your comments, I encourage you to come back and keep the conversation going, we can learn so much from each other! You can also check the “subscribe to comments” box before submitting your comment and all comments will be emailed to you, no matter whether they are in direct reply to you or not.

Comments Policy

Please keep the comments respectful, we may not all agree, and that is OK, but we must play nice and understand that we all come from different walks of life and have our own perspectives. Comments that are derogatory or that do not contribute to the conversation will be deleted and you will be blocked from further participating.

Summary

Women, Food, and God by Geneen Roth, Chapter Three – Never Underestimate the Inclination to Bolt

I think I dried up my highlighter in this chapter.

Geneen tells the story of wanting to bail at a ten day meditation retreat and that despite her very limited income, she was actually trying to rent a helicopter to come pick her up from the middle of nowhere.

She was going to bail.

This chapter digs us deeper into our relationship with food by showing us how we bail on ourselves and that we aren’t really living when we aren’t really feeling. When it feels to hard, we bail.

Not Bolting – being awake without being drugged by food, alcohol, work, sex, money, drugs, fame or in denial (about the crisis we are actually in)- is asking a lot.

Obsession is a way of organizing our lives so that we never have to deal with the hard part – the part that happens between being two years old and dying.

We compulsive eaters wouldn’t have an obsession with food if we believed that life was tolerable without it.

But what should we do instead?

The answer to “I have no idea how I am going to get through this” is: You allow yourself to sob, the heave to feel as if your heart has boulders crashing through it.

And you notice that when you don’t use food to shut yourself down, to leave your body, you actually feel more alive.

On obsessions:

Obsessions are ways we leave before we are left because we believe that the pain of staying would kill us.

But the person who would be killed, the “I” in the “pain is big and I am small” belief, is an idea, a memory, an image of yourself leftover from childhood. You already felt destroyed. That was then. You will never feel that small again. You are not dependant on someone else to hold you, to love you so that you can continue breathing.

What it takes to stay:

Staying requires the awareness of the desire to bolt. Of the stories you are telling yourself about the need to bolt. Staying means recognizing that when you want to bolt you are living in the past.

Staying requires being curious about who you actually are when you don’t take yourself to be a collection of memories.

To stay, you have to believe there is something worth staying for – and then you have to bring yourself back, again and again. The initial glimpse of wonder, of love, of possibility, of expansion becomes commitment to returning, to bringing yourself back each time you bolt.

My Reaction

I didn’t even come close to sharing with you everything I highlighted because I am sure I would have broken some sort of copyright law had I done so. What a powerful message because now, we are getting into the nitty gritty of it all. And though I don’t really binge anymore and my focus has shifted from weight, I know that I still bail on myself.

In the past, I brought so much awareness to my life in food, I thought for a while that I had it all figured out. But the truth is, the bolting factor still remains.

Every time I skip my morning meditation, I am bolting.

Every time I choose to surf the web instead of doing what I really need to be doing, I am bolting.

Every time I choose to spend money I don’t have, I am bolting.

Bolting. Bolting. Bolting.

Though I prefer to call it bailing.

But I also use the term dude.

See, there I go again.

Bolting with humor.

Now, I don’t believe that everyone that has issues with food, sex, drugs, money, the internet, or whatever, have deep seated childhood issues going on but I did.

Or do.

I was made to feel very, very small as a child. And even today, on the rare occasion that I speak to my parents, they still make me feel very small. I have gotten better at using my voice and standing up to them, but I know that those feelings, the ones my parents planted, still contribute to how I respond to life today. I still tell myself those stories about not being good enough, smart enough, whatever.

I still convince myself that I am not worthy.

I question, who am I to be doing this work.

I have no right to be healthy.

I have no right to be happy.

And so, I bail.

I hide my voice in fear of what will happen if I do.

I check out.

I escape from feeling less than whole.

But, I am whole.

And one thing I know for sure is that I feel most alive when I am allowing myself to just feel whatever I feel. In fact, crying, heaving sobbing is now one of my favorite pass times.

Seriously.

I’ve been called too sensitive my entire life.

I was told that crying was weakness and that I just need to “shut up right now”.

My tears were silenced for far too long.

So, now I cry whenever the hell I feel like it.

I sob, I moan, I heave to the point that it feels like my chest is going to explode.

I let the emotion move through me.

And damn, it feels good.

You can’t have that just had a good cry feeling if you never cry.

What is laughter without tears, afterall?

Let’s Talk

Well, now, that was therapeutic.

What is your reaction to chapter three?

Can you relate to my reaction to chapter three? (please someone say yes!)

What tactics do you use in bailing on yourself?

What emotions are you afraid of just feeling?

Did your childhood or parents play a role in how you feel about using your voice now?

“When we give up dieting, we take back something we were often too young to know we had given away: our own voice. Our ability to make decisions about what to eat and when. Our belief in ourselves. Our right to decide what goes into our mouths. Unlike the diets that appear monthly in magazines or the thermal pants that sweat off pounds, unlike a lover or a friend or a car, your body is reliable. It doesn’t go away, get lost, stolen. If you will listen, it will speak.”

This week is action packed with links to make up for last weeks short and sweet list!

Blogs

I found this post via one of my favorite tweethearts @Jen_Saunders; it is a review of the movie Eat, Pray, Love and I couldn’t agree more.

Ashley wrote an awesome guest post on Voice in Recovery about the fear of hunger. Why is it that we are so darn afraid to feel hungry? She also wrote a post on her on blog about being ok with who you are and what you do. You should read the comments, too. Hilarious, but oh so true.

Heather, from Heather’s Dish, started the amazing movement Faces of Beauty which is a site to show that women are beautiful just the way they are, bare faced and proud. Check it out and then join the movement.

And Heather, from Hangry Pants, wrote a post about all the good things going on for her right now which includes a beautiful account about her yoga practice.

Katie wrote a post right out of my brain about how life can get in the way of eating when you are hungry. I have my own post brewing about this but she does a wonderful job of answering the age old intuitive eating question of what to do when you can’t honor your hunger signals. She also wrote an awesome, awesome post about Thin Fantasies. You know, those dreams of being thin and how dramatically different your life will be when you get to be a certain weight? Yeah, those.

My dear sweet love, Mish, wrote a post to her avoidance. She gets real about where she is, where she has been and where she is going.

This past week, Karen and I had a skype date and we had a chat about embracing the fact that what works for me doesn’t work for everyone else, and that includes the principles of intuitive eating. Ironically, there was lots of chatter among other bloggers and twitter about the same topic and Karen wrote an amazing post called Whatever Works, and I don’t think I could have said it better myself.

My dear friend, Margarita tells you 10 way to stop fat talk for good. These are real tactics that you can use in your everyday life to stop those negative tapes.

Joy is doing a FREE discovering your dreams teleconference and this girls rocks my socks. She always knows exactly what to say, how to say it and when to say it. Love.

Around Here

To all that have asked about my interview, thank you. I have not been provided with a recording and at this point, doubt that I will be but frankly speaking, I’m not in love with how it turned out anyway. So to all who supported me through that, thank you, too. That was a tough day and I could not have made it through without that support.

I’ve decided to change up the way I do recipes. I am going to make pages out of them instead of posts and include them in my link love posts. So, to get started with that, I created a page just for the peach salsa that was featured in the oven baked halibut post yesterday.

Fresh Peach Salsa – A perfect way to use up those sweet, summer peaches. This pairs well with fish as well as chicken or tortilla chips!

OK, told you it was packed this week. Lots of fabulous things going on in this amazing community of ours.

Is there something I missed? What did you do this week that you are proud of? Come on, toot your own horn. If you don’t, who will? Leave me some link love in the comments.
