DRAB hits the streets of London

The last few months have seen an influx of Australian street artists passing through London, each leaving their mark on the city. Everfresh crew member Rone was in town back in January and again in April working on this mural in the Old Truman Brewery.This month has seen a visit from grafitti / street artist Lush who has been hitting London and Brighton hard with a series of typographic pieces across the two cities. We have also spotted works from HAHA and Numskull who has collaborated on a number of pieces with Mr. Penfold and Sweet Toof.

The latest Australian to hit London is Melbourne street artist DRAB, who recently moved to East London. It would appear the artist has now settled in and has begun hitting the streets with a series of large scale paste-ups pictured. It's great to see paste-up of this scale in London again and we look forward to seeing more from the artist in the coming month.

Here is our photographic round up of what's been grabbing Hookedblog's attention on the streets of East London over the last week or so. This Sweet Toof and Pez shutter is from a few weeks back from when PEZ was in London for his solo show but we have only just managed to capture a photo of the piece as the shop always seems to be open!

A new wood cut piece from Dale Grimshaw on Hanbury Street off Brick Lane.

Also on Hanbury Street is recent piece from stencil artist Otto Schade.

A piece from last year painted up in Dalston featuring the work of The Krah.

Finally found this C215 cat hiding just off Leonard Street.

Stencil duo Jana & JS were extremely busy on their recent trip to London, we have already featured a selection of the work they created around East London. The piece is located on Hengate Street, off Brick Lane.

Rolling Fools from Dr.Cream

We have been seeing these miniature resin 3d street art pieces for some time now around East London, in various colours and often in clusters stuck to walls, building and various other street furniture. Recently the pieces have gotten considerably larger such as those pictured, with each one featuring the 'Rolling Fool' character.

At first we assumed the various pieces we were seeing around London were all identical considering the detail in each, but from our recent set of pictures we realised they were numbered and each of the ones we found featuring the character in a different pose. With each piece embossed around the base with the words Rolling Fool Youtube, a quick search lead us to the video below which features these cement sticker characters in different locations right across London, with each one photographed and made into a clever street art animation. The work it seems is that of an artist calling himself Dr. Cream and his Jester Quester street art project would appear to be an urban art and photography quest that is interlinked via the search engines of Google, Flickr and Youtube. Banksy & The Queen's Diamond Jubilee

The web has been abuzz all afternoon with chatter of a new Banksy street art piece in North London. According to locals this piece appeared some time in early hours this morning on the side of Poundland on Whymark Avenue in Turnpike Lane. This piece has not officially been confirmed as a Banksy piece, but with the Queen's upcoming Diamond Jubilee, the location of this piece and the style and cut of the stencil it is highly likely that it's the work of Banksy. Here are a selection of photos Hookedblog captured this evening.

A series of new stencil pieces and paste-ups have been appearing around East London over the last week or so and yesterday we managed to find so time to capture the selection presented here. The work is that of duo Jana & JS, an Austrian and French couple currently living in Salzburg, Austria. This is the first time we have seen their work on the streets of London and we are expecting to find a few more that we know we have missed.

Spotted this additional large scale piece from JANA & JS yesterday. Should you want to see it in person you can find it on Fashion Street, just off Brick Lane.

Broken Fingaz Crew on the streets

Unga, Kip, Deso and Tant are street artists / illustrators / designers hailing from Israel and collectively known as the Broken Fingaz Crew. Having received support from the British Israeli Arts Training Scheme, a British Council initiative in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Sport in Israel, the collective recently staged their first major UK exhibition, 'CRAZY EYE HOTEL' in the Old Truman Brewery off Brick Lane. If you missed the show which closed last week, check out our slideshow of images from the show below.

With the exhibition now closed, the Broken Fingaz Crew have taken their work to the streets of East London hitting up the hoardings of this derelict building pictured on Hackney Road. We also spotted an additional new piece on Bethnal Green Road which appeared over the Bank Holiday weekend. We look forward to hopefully seeing more street work from the collective while they are in London.

Agents of Change - The Megaro Project

Earlier last month saw the completetion of this impressive and eye catching project by the Agents Of Change for the Megaro Hotel and Karpo restaurant. What looks to be one of London's largest street art / graffiti murals has been painted by the four members of Agents of Change – Remi/Rough, Steve More, LX.One and Augustine Kofie with assistance from David Shillinglaw. The project encompasses the two sides of a five storey Georgian building located directly opposite St. Pancras International Station in Kings Cross, London.

With the building wrapped in scaffolding, it took the artists two whole weeks to complete, using over 150 litres of emulsion and 160 litres of spray paint. On it's unveiling, the buildings colourful new addition was very well received although it was met with some opposition from a member of the King’s Cross Conservation Area Advisory Committee who felt "what was an attractive building had now been knackered with a layer of permanent paint,like an unwanted tattoo"!

We personally feel it is a great addition to the city and especially the Kings Cross area. And what with London hosting the 2012 Olympics this summer it makes for a fantastic first impression on national and international visitor arriving into St. Pancras, highlighting London as a vibrant and creative city. Mobstr back on the streets

RONE Mural In London

Hookedblog bumped into Australian artist and Everfresh Crew member RONE this morning while we were out and about around Brick Lane taking some street art photos. We last saw RONE in London back in January when the artist painted some large scale murals as well as hitting up Redchurch Street with some large paste-ups featuring his stylised images of ‘girls’ faces.

The Melbourne based artist arrived into town earlier this week ahead of the opening of his joint London exhibition ‘Don’t Look Back’ with Tom French. With the exhibition work hung and ready for the opening this Thursday 26th April, the artist found time to begin work on this mural piece in East London using a combination of paste-ups, paints and spray paint. If you are out East be sure and check this piece in the Old Truman Brewery off Brick Lane.

The ‘Don’t Look Back’ exhibition opens 26th April with a preview on the night from 6:30pm – 9:30pm. The show will then run from April 27th – May 1st 2012.

ROA's New London Hedgehog Mural

Following the opening of his successful London solo shows "Hypnagogia" at Stolen Space last Thursday night (covered here), Belgian artist ROA took to the street Saturday evening and began work on this large scale hedgehog piece located on Chance Street opposite Shoreditch Station.

After sketching up the outlines and laying down the base colours last night, the artist returned this afternoon to complete the piece. The hedgehog piece drew huge crowds throughout the day with new and old fans stopping to take pictures of the artist at work as well as having their photos taken with ROA. Working late into the evening this latest street art mural is almost complete with a small few pieces which ROA will finish in the morning before he leaves London. We think you will all agree that this is another fantastic piece from ROA and a great new addition to the streets of East London.

D*Face hits Tower Bridge

Hookedblog found ourselves in South London this afternoon and what with all the road works and barricades going up for this years London 2012 Marathon, we headed back to East London via Tower Bridge. As we crossed the bridge it was hard not to miss the army of signature D*Dog characters of London artist D*Face, which appear to have taken to the skies!

The white and yellow screen printed characters attached to various street lamposts popped out against the evening sky and lined the length of Tower Bridge, which also happens to be part of the Marathon route! Keep your eyes peeled if you are in the area, if not here are a selection of pictures we took.

C215 Book Signing At Signal Gallery

For all you fans of French stencil artist C215, the artist is set to return to London this weekend, Saturday 21st April. C215 was last in town at the start of March when he hit the streets of East London with a whole new series of his signature stencil portraits.

This weekend will see The Signal Gallery host the artist for a signing of his latest book titled 'C215 Street Art'. Published by Pyramyd Editions in France, the book will be exclusively available in the UK at The Signal Gallery and will be priced at £15.

C215 will also be bringing a small collection of new works which will be on view and for sale in the galleries showroom over the weekend. Knowing the artist he'll no doubt be at work around Shoreditch over the weekend, hitting the streets with some new stencil work so keep your eyes peeled!. If you plan on attending the book launch, please drop The Signal Gallery an email in advance(info@signalgallery.com) to give them an idea as to the number of books to have available at the launch. Bortusk Leer's Street Monsters

DIBO & PEZ New London Mural

Last night saw Hookedblog catch up again with Spanish artist PEZ. Having already painted a number of street art pieces around London here and here during his time in the city as well as some collaborative shutters with London street artists Malarky and Sweet Toof, PEZ managed to get one last wall in last night before his departure this afternoon.

Despite last nights heavy rain fall and the miserable cold conditions the artist worked through on producing this colourful fun wall which saw him collaborate with fellow Spanish artist Dibo who has just recently landed in London. This new piece is located on Pedley St, off Brick Lane.

The King's Land Mural Project

Last week saw Hookedblog head up to Haggerston to catch up with Nazir Tanbouli and his assistant Rita working on The King's Land Mural Project. The Egyptian born artist moved into the Kingsland Estate off Kingsland Road in 2011 and set up his studio/gallery(Studio75) on the East London estate.

The eight blocks of semi derelict flats are due to be demolished later in the year and replaced with new homes. A large portion of the estate is depopulated and bricked up but there are still tenants living there awaiting rehousing. Having had a positive response from the local community to a mural the artist painted on the exterior wall of his studio, Nazir approached the building owners L&Q Housing Association with the idea of extending the mural project in an effort to liven up the area for the remaining tenants.

The Housing Association agreed to support the urban art installation and granted Nazir permission to extend the project across all eight blocks on the estate. The King's Land Mural Project has seen the artist creating a series of large scale hand painted posters which have been pasted up directly onto the blocked up windows of a number of the blocks. The artist has been working flat out and several mural have already been completed with plans to have murals on all the building by the Queen’s Jubilee in the summer before all the blocks get demolished. Hookedblog will be checking in again on the project and bringing you additional photos as the work progresses on the project. Pez - Smiling Since 1999 Exhibition

We have previously featured legendary Spanish street artist PEZ on Hookedblog, as the artist has been in London for the last week ahead of the opening of his first London solo show 'Smiling Since 199" which opened at Tony's Gallery on the 5th April 2012. The show features a mixture of installations, original canvas works, prints and some video work.

Hookedblog have been lucky enough to hang out with the artist as he has been re-decorating the streets of East London the last few days with his smiling iconic fish characters. Some of the street work you will have already seen on the blog, but here is a new selection of photographs we have captured.

If you are in or near London this weekend it's your last chance to catch 'Smiling since 1999' at Tony's Gallery as the show finishes and as it's a Bank Holiday you've no excuse not to go and see it!

CYRCLE Collective in London

Looks like the LA based street art collective known as Cyrcle recently passed through London. The three man art collective formed in 2010, combining their skills from different backgrounds which blend graffiti, fine art and design to form the Cyrcle brand.

The collective would appear to be on tour at the moment, with London the first stop on route to Paris where they were they have been working on some collaborative work with French Street artist and Ted prize winner JR. You can see some of that collaborative work over on Cyrcle's Facebook page here. We expect we will see more street work from the collective over the next few days who are in Paris for Paris Free Walls, an event which has also seen a number of UK artist taking part, including Ben Slow, Nick Walker, SheOne and David Shillinglaw. London Street Art Shutters

It's Friday and we were up early this morning to hit the streets and capture a few new and some older roller shutters that we have been trying to photograph for some time now. We have already featured some awesome street art earlier this week on Hookedblog including the stunning new wall from Sheffield artist Phlegm as well as our photographic roundup of London Street Art and not forgetting the work of Spanish street artist PEZ who has been bringing a welcome splash of colour to the streets of Hackney.

So here is a selection of what we photographed this morning, two new shutters from Malarky both colloborative pieces and both with Spanish artists. The first is with PEZ pictured above on Brick Lane and the second shutter features the work of Barcelona artist eDjinn on Cheshire Street. Up top a classic piece from Ronzo who loves Dalston unlike the grumpy old man in the photo!

Triplets! And no, not the sequel to the 80s Twins movie that's just been announced!! But three new triplet owls from East London artist Dscreet. Finally two older shutters featuring work from Gaia and Mr. Penfold, both on shops that always seem to be open!

Awesome Phlegm Mural in London

Sheffield based artist and Hookedblog favorite Phlegm was in London last week and painted this awesome street art mural. This huge wall, one of the largest London walls the artist has painted was arranged by Global Street Art, who after securing the wall worked with Phlegm over the three days it took for him to paint this piece. The wall really needs to be seen in person and if you happen to be in London we suggest you make your way over to Heneage Street in East London and check it out. Here are a selection of photographs we took of this stunning new wall.

London Street Art — 27

Wow it looks like January was the last time we posted a photographic round up of what's been grabbing our attention on the streets of East London. What with the unseasonably warm weather London has been having over the last few days our camera has been kept super busy as many artists appear to be venturing outside and back onto the streets, so here is our long over due selection.

Spanish artist PEZ rocked into London over the weekend and has hitting the streets with his iconic smiling fish characters. We have already featured the large wall he completed in Hackney and we expect we will be seeing more from the artist in the coming weeks.

East London artist Sweet Toof has been hitting the streets hard recently with some large scale pieces as well as a number of collaborative shutters and walls with other artists. Yesterday saw Sweet Toof team up with Mr Nylon on the shutter piece pictured up top. He also dropped this colourfull piece above on Hackney Road with Mr.Penfold and Australian artist Numskull. We have yet to grab some pictures but our friend and fellow photographer João Retorta caught up with Sweet Toof over the weekend and photographed some large scale roller action from the artist in Dalston alongside Mr.Nylon and Dscreet. Mr. Hin Stencil artist Don has been very active since January with multiple pieces from the artist to be found around Redchurch Street, Hanbury Street as well as the Southbank skate park.

David Walker x SheOne collaborated on this mural earlier in the month an it can still be seen on Pedley Street, just off Brick Lane.

London is Smiling with PEZ

Hookedblog caught up with the legendary Spanish street artist PEZ yesterday in Hackney. PEZ first started painting his now iconic ʻsmiling fishʼ logo in the streets of Barcelona as far back as 1999. He arrived into London over the weekend from Bogota (Colombia) where he currently lives, to begin work on his first London solo show early next month at Tony's Gallery.

Wasting no time at all the artist was eager to hit the streets and we caught up with Pez as work began on this mural late afternoon, featuring his signature fish characters. We were lucky enough to hang out with the artist as work progressed on the wall but with the evening temperature dropping , light fading and possibly a touch of jet-lag, plus the calling of cold beers the artist decided to finish for the day. Pez plans to return later today to complete the wall and we will bring you some photos once it is finished so watch this space...

ROA Street Art in London

Looks like we missed Belgium artist ROA while we were away last weekend. The artist painted this new street art piece just off Brick Lane on the Old Truman Brewery gates which had previously seen work from Coloumbian street artist Bastardilla. We are hoping that this is just the first of many new pieces that ROA will paint ahead of his upcoming show at StolenSpace next month.

Entitled 'Hypnagogia', the forthcoming exhibition will be a large scale event spread over two exhibition spaces, so we can expect to see some installation work as well as original works painted on various found objects. The show opening will also mark the launch of ROA's first artist book 'Roa: 'An Introduction To Animal Representation' by Mammal Press. Conor Harrington, Dscreet & Ronzo — New Mural in Dalston

Following his sellout London show 'Dead Meat' earlier this month at Lazarides Gallery, Conor Harrington took to the streets yesterday for some outdoor painting. Making the most of the glorious Spring sunshine he teamed up with fellow London artists Dscreet and Ronzo to paint this collaborative wall in Dalston, East London.

Conor Harrington and Ronzo are also featuring in the latest issue of VNA magazine which went on sale last week and is available online via their website.

Cheryl Dunn At Ivory & Black Soho

Hookedblog have been fans of New York based filmmaker and photographer Cheryl Dunn's work for a number of years now. This Friday night, March 23rd will see the opening of Dunn's latest exhibition 'Sometimes the Answer', the debut show of London’s newest gallery, Ivory & Black Soho.

Dunn has had her work exhibited at various galleries and museums, including Deitch Projects in New York, The Tate Modern in London, and the “Art in the Streets” Exhibition at Geffen Contemporary MOCA as well as featuring in the landmark documentary, book and travelling museum exhibition, 'Beautiful Losers'. She is also currently working on completing her 'Everything Street' project, a full-length feature film documenting New York's preeminent street photographers, a Kickstarter project which we contributed to last year.

Friday's exhibition will feature a wide range of photographs from Dunn’s 30 years of signature documentation and will be accompanied by the release of a limited edition artist’s book of her work. Cheryl Dunn has already landed in London and hits the streets with artist Pedro Matos in this short film above directed by Joao Retorta for Ivory & Black Soho.

The show opens March 23 and runs until April 21, 2012
