Texas Longhorns coach Mack Brown won the inaugural Stallings Award.  Stallings started the Rise School in Tuscaloosa, Ala., when he was coach of the Crimson Tide, to provide a school for children with development delays.
There are now Rise Schools in Austin, Dallas and Houston.  Brown volunteers at the Rise School in Austin.  Brown also had a relationship with Stallings’ late son, Johnny, who was born with Down syndrome.  Johnny Stallings was the real inspiration behind the award.

Stallings stated, “It goes to somebody who makes a difference in the community.  It’s not about won-loss record. Mack has made a difference in a lot of different ways and lot of different programs not only in Austin but throughout the country. We wanted him to be the first recipient of this award. It goes to somebody who makes a difference in the community.  It’s not about won-loss record. Brown stated: “The award means a lot to me because I knew Johnny. I knew him well. I watched Coach Stallings. He is a big tough football coach. He was a mentor to us all. When I was around him with Johnny you saw the special bond he had with his son. It was the driving force for Sally [Mack's wife] and I to get involved with the Rise School in Austin.”

The Texas Longhorns and Mack Brown now have 14 commitments for the class of 2013, with Antwuan Davis from Bastrop (Texas), becoming the first defensive back in the class.

Marketed Schools and Pro Organizations that have gained fans interest across the nation

In most cases, fans have followed teams that play in their own backyard. At the same time, we have certain teams from pro to college sports that have made their own universal mark gaining fans interest from across the country and overseas.
Example: In pro sports from MLB, NBA and the NFL, we have the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics, Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys. These are organizations that have had lots of success winning championships, and having legendary coaches and players that went on to make the Hall of Fame.

And with that success, the world of big-time television marketed these successful franchises in America’s living rooms. This is why we have fans that like teams from other states. In college sports, big time schools such as Duke, Miami, Texas, Ohio State, Syracuse, North Carolina, Florida, Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Penn State and many more have gained interest from fans across the nation due to being on prime time television networks. Ultimately, in my opinion, you shouldn’t be a fan of a team only because they play down the street from your home.

You like who you like, no matter where they play. Being a Connecticut resident, I have heard many being criticized for being Cowboys, Steelers or Duke Fanatic. And I have repeatedly explained the simple fact of universal schools and professional organizations that have been on the market for decades. So if you’re living in the northern states wearing Texas gear, I wouldn’t have a problem with it, and neither should anyone else.

Question: If you’re a Packers, Steelers, Cowboys or Lakers fan living in Connecticut or any other state that doesn’t sport a pro team, and then later starts a pro franchise, will you then have to switch teams because of having one in your own state?

Cameron Ridley | Signed National Letter of Intent for Texas Longhorns

Cameron Ridley signed his National Letter of Intent today and officially join the Longhorns, according to multiple reports citing his high school coach, Ronnie Courtney.   Texas Longhorns, who beat out North Carolina, Georgetown and Ohio State for the promising center.
The center is from Fort Bend Bush and has been verbally committed to Texas for more than a year.  UT’s sixth recruit to sign is a 6-foot-10, 230-pound prospect.
Ridley was a McDonald’s All-American this year and is a five-star recruit.  Texas was undersized in the middle all season, but Ridley and Ibeh give UT the size it really needs.  Ridley joins Prince Ibeh (Naaman Forest High School in Garland), Connor Lammert (Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio) and Ioannis Papapetrou (Florida Air Academy) in the Texas Longhorns’ front court next season.

T.J. Ford, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Daniel Gibson are other big in-state commits, who laid the groundwork for many of the state’s elite players, who played for Rick Barnes.  Ridley got a very late start for playing basketball. He played pickup games with his brother often, but didn’t play high school basketball until after his freshman year.

I will be up front about this: I have liked the NBA’s one-and-done rule. I am one of those crazy people who LOVE both the college and pro game equally. So seeing these top talents wearing college uniforms for a season or so and then having these kids coming into the League with some sort of top-level experience is great for me.

But that’s about it.

Rick Barnes | Quote on J’Covan Brown

I will miss the name J’Covan, when I attend the University of Texas games at the Erwin Center next year.  I love his style of play and the effort he gives.  Here is a quotation from Texas Longhorns head coach, Rick Barnes, on junior guard J’Covan Brown’s decision to enter the NBA Draft:

“Our staff wishes J’Covan and his family nothing but success as he moves forward. We’ve literally seen J’Covan grow up and mature before our eyes over the last three years here, and we are proud of the man that he has become. We respect his decision and understand his need to provide for his daughter.”

J’Covan Brown decided to forgo his senior season.  The University of Texas coaching staff and players will miss him more than they realize at the Erwin Center next year.  He always gave everything he had on the court.  Here is a quotation from J’Covan of the Texas Longhorns,  on his decision why he will enter the NBA Draft:
