Both Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News and Grant Afseth of Dallas Sports Journal have confirmed the news and report that Broghamer will be an assistant coach in Orlando.

Broghamer has been an assistant with Dallas for the past three seasons, largely focusing on player development. He was the Mavericks’ Summer League coach in 2025 and conducted Cooper Flagg‘s pregame workouts throughout the 2025/26 campaign. Flagg, last year’s No. 1 overall pick, is the NBA’s reigning Rookie of the Year.

Broghamer will be reuniting with new Magic head coach Sean Sweeney, his former colleague in Dallas and Milwaukee, as well as veteran assistant coach Popeye Jones, who spent last season with the Mavs (it was technically his second stint as an assistant in Dallas).

According to the National Basketball Coaches Association, Broghamer got his NBA start in 2013 as a video intern in Phoenix, spent four seasons under Jason Kidd with the Bucks, and had a five-year run with the Cavaliers before joining Kidd’s staff in Dallas in 2023. The Mavericks parted ways with Kidd earlier this offseason when the new front office regime took over.

Veteran assistant coach Phil Handy is now the lone holdover from last season’s Mavericks staff, Curtis and Afseth note.

“I think we’ve got a really, really good team,” White told Boone. “We’ve got a lot of really, really good players. I think we got a lot of unselfish players, so that’ll make it easy in terms of coming together. A lot of us are already here now in Charlotte working out, so that’s a major step in — what is it, August?

“You don’t see that a lot in the NBA, so that already shows individually how bought in each player is. So for us, it’s just about doing it together, doing it as a collective, getting better each and every day on the court, off the court. Because I think we all value getting to that brotherhood off the court as well. It’s just as important as doing stuff on the court.”

White, who was acquired by Charlotte ahead of the February trade deadline and re-signed with the Hornets this offseason on a three-year, $74MM deal, has high expectations for the upcoming season.

“We’ve got a chance to be a really good team and surprise a lot of people, but we’ve got to put the work in,” White said. “And what comes with the work is doing what we’re doing now.”

As Boone writes, the Hornets have the longest active playoff drought in the NBA at 10 years and the East looks quite strong. White acknowledged the apparent strength of the conference but believes the competition will only help the team grow.

While the Hornets moved on from Ball and Bridges in separate deals, those trades brought back Naz Reid, Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale and draft assets, Boone notes. White reiterated that several players on the roster are already getting to know one another.

“Being here is important,” White said. “It’s important right now, especially when you’ve got not a totally different team, but you got some new individuals joining the team. Grayson Allen’s here as well. The rookies are here. Dorian Finney-Smith is here. You don’t normally see that during the summer. So, I think it’s important for us to just gain some traction going into the training camp. It’s going to be dope.

“A lot of guys being here this early, not just being here, but you start stuff early — the locker room talks, the meal room talks. And all that stuff is important. So, yeah, exciting times for sure.”

White called Reid “super talented” and praised the big man’s “unique skill set.” He also spoke extensively about Allen, whose teams have made the playoffs in six of his eight years in the league.

“The one thing I’ve always noticed about G.A. is his ability to impact winning,” White said. “Everywhere he’s gone, he’s won. Whether it’s Milwaukee. … he’s been a winner everywhere he goes. He’s been part of a winning culture. He’s been part of a winning organization. So I think first and foremost, he knows what winning looks like, and he knows what it takes to win at this level. I think obviously being one of the best shooters in the NBA is going to help us a ton.

“And something that’s underrated about him is his ability to put the ball on the floor, play-make as well, get into the paint. He has a variety of finishes, slow step finishes around the rim, great touch. He has a lot of game, obviously, but I think everybody sees him as just a shooter. But he’s a guy who’s like an elite competitor. He’s a guy that can put the ball on the floor, play-make, get in the paint, finish around the rim, like I said. So yeah, I’m excited to share the floor with him.”

The brief report also cited the “combined effects of multiple prescription medications” as a significant factor in Clarke’s death, Gutierrez adds. Those medications weren’t listed Friday, but will be once the full autopsy report is released in the future, according to the medical examiner.

Clarke spent his entire NBA career in Memphis after being selected with the 21st pick in the 2019 draft. He was 29 years old at the time of his passing on May 11.

Clarke was found unresponsive in his bedroom following a 911 call and was pronounced dead by paramedics at 5:15 pm local time, per the examiner’s report. Drug paraphernalia was found at the home and the incident was treated as a possible overdose, which has now been confirmed.

A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, who grew up in Phoenix, Clarke was regarded as a beloved teammate and was active in the Memphis community. The former San Jose State and Gonzaga standout averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 60.5% from the field in 309 career regular season appearances with the Grizzlies, including 55 starts (20.8 minutes per game).

The Canadian-born Clarke was one of the top reserves in the league when healthy but battled significant injury absences in recent seasons. A 6’8″ power forward, he missed a little over one calendar year due to a torn Achilles tendon he sustained in March 2023 and was limited to just two games played in 2025/26 due to knee and calf injuries.

Clarke was arrested in Cross County, Arkansas, in April on charges of trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing in a vehicle exceeding the speed limit, and improper passing. He was released on bond the following day.

Subsequent reporting indicated that over 230 grams of kratom were allegedly found in his possession after he led local deputies on a “miles-long chase” while driving over 100 miles per hour. Kratom, described by the Mayo Clinic as a herbal extract that can act as a stimulant at lower doses and a sedative for pain relief at higher doses, is legal in Tennessee but is considered a Schedule 1 controlled substance in Arkansas.

According to Gutierrez, the coroner’s report didn’t mention whether kratom was present in Clarke’s body at the time of his death.

That ruling, issued by U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney in Denver, made four-year college players from the high school class of 2022 eligible for a fifth season in 2026/27. The ruling is expected to be appealed, so a reversal is a possibility. But in the meantime, several players — including a few unsigned second-round picks — could try to return to the NCAA ranks.

We wrote stories when each of the players listed above reportedly agreed to Exhibit 10 contracts, with the exception of Washington, since it wasn’t clear whether his agreement would just be for Summer League or for training camp as well. The former Maryland forward agreed to a deal with the Pelicans, his agency announced (via Twitter) in late June.

Former North Carolina State standout Darrion Williams didn’t reach a tentative Exhibit 10 deal with an NBA club like those 27 players, but he’s another undrafted free agent who’s currently eligible for a fifth season. He committed to Texas Tech, the school announced (Twitter link), after spending his sophomore and junior seasons with the Red Raiders.

Ham is the most noteworthy name of the group and the lone holdover from last season’s staff. The former NBA forward and longtime assistant was head coach of the Lakers for two years (2022-2024) before rejoining the Bucks in the 2024 offseason. He’s entering his third consecutive season – and seventh overall – as a Milwaukee assistant.

St. Andrews spent the 2025/26 campaign with Portland after a two-year stint as an assistant in Memphis under Jenkins. He spent five years as an assistant with the Bucks (2018-23) and got his NBA start with Atlanta.

Further details on the remaining coaches — including former Bucks point guard Ford, who’s entering his first season as an NBA assistant — can be found in the team’s announcement.

In addition to the full-fledged assistants listed above, Jenkins will also have three other staff members. Jack Herum, who’s entering his eighth season in Milwaukee, will return in an assistant coach/player development role, while Isaiah Wilkins and Nshan Kenjoian have been named assistant coach/player development and head video coordinator, respectively.

“You can’t take the qualifying offer coming off an All-Star season,” one Western Conference executive told Siegel. “It’s almost like a death sentence. Nobody will view you close to the player you think you are again. Giving up a nine-figure deal for the qualifying offer and risking getting hurt with no long-term security, especially as a center in today’s league, would be extremely reckless and foolish.”

With the Pistons hoping to pay Duren in the neighborhood of $30-35MM per year and the All-NBA third-teamer seeking a maximum-salary deal, there’s still a sizable gap between the two sides, Siegel writes. Bridging that gap remains a possibility, but Siegel hears from sources that talks between Duren and the Pistons are paused for now and are expected to resume later in August, with an expectation that they could drag into September.

Here are a few more notes and rumors on NBA free agency:

• The Hawks have “backed off significantly” in the Peyton Watson sweepstakes due to a reluctance to meet the asking prices of both Watson and the Nuggets, according to Siegel, who says there’s also widespread skepticism about the Cavaliers landing the restricted free agent forward. The Clippers and Bucks are considered more viable sign-and-trade suitors for Watson, with Siegel reporting that L.A. has conveyed a willingness to part with defensive-minded wing Derrick Jones Jr. in a potential deal. However, due to their position above the second apron, the Nuggets wouldn’t be permitted to take back Jones using Watson’s outgoing salary. Siegel adds that Watson’s camp has felt “disrespected” by the Nuggets’ offers to date and may prefer a sign-and-trade.
• The Pistons inquired on Bennedict Mathurin last month but are no longer pursuing the Clippers‘ restricted free agent wing, sources tell ClutchPoints. Siegel suggests that L.A. would likely be willing to accept Isaac Okoro and second-round draft capital from the Bulls for Mathurin, though it’s unclear if Chicago would put that sort of offer on the table.
• The Knicks have been in contact with several free agents as they consider options to fill their third center spot, per Ian Begley of SNY.tv. However, Begley points out that if they were prepared to give a guaranteed deal to any of those players, it would likely already be done. That’s why – unless the Knicks make a trade for a third center or someone unexpected gets waived – Begley anticipates the Knicks will bring in multiple big men on non-guaranteed contracts to compete for that role.

Peter, 24, was the 54th overall pick of the 2025 draft out of Liberty University. He made 38 appearances for Indiana as a rookie, averaging 4.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 12.9 minutes per game, with a .380/.328/.625 shooting line.

Peter’s two-way contract with the Pacers covered a second season and he played pretty well at the Las Vegas Summer League last month, scoring 10.4 points in 24.3 minutes per game while making 50.0% of his shots from the floor. However, Indiana had a crowded two-way situation and needed to make room to re-sign Jalen Slawson, so Peter found himself as the odd man out and was cut at the end of he team’s run in Vegas.

The Spurs signed a pair of 2026 second-rounders – Maliq Brown and Ja’Kobi Gillespie – to two-way contracts while also bringing back David Jones Garcia on a new two-way deal. So if Peter receives an Exhibit 10 contract, he seems more likely to end up as an affiliate player for the Austin Spurs, San Antonio’s G League team, than to have that deal converted to a two-way.

The Spurs currently have four openings on their 21-man offseason roster, so no corresponding move will be necessary to bring Peter aboard.

August 5: The Clippers are waiving point guard Sean Pedulla, Michael Scotto reports for HoopsHype (Twitter link). The 23-year-old was on a two-way deal that he signed in February.

Pedulla played seven games for the Clippers last season, making 5-of-15 field goal attempts for 13 points in 31 total minutes. He spent the majority of his time with the team’s G League affiliate, the San Diego Clippers, after starting the season with the Rip City Remix, the Trail Blazers’ affiliate.

Pedulla was named G League Rookie of the Year after averaging 23.6 points, 6.7 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 28 total games between the Remix and the San Diego Clippers.

Pedulla was one of two Clippers two-way players, alongside this year’s 55th overall pick, Nick Martinelli. L.A. has reportedly agreed to two-way deals with Jamarion Sharp and Jalen Pickett, necessitating a roster move, since teams only have three two-way slots apiece.

Stewart, who went undrafted out of Presbyterian College in 2025, spent his first professional season playing in the G League, where he appeared in a total of 46 games for the Austin Spurs, Memphis Hustle, and Wisconsin Herd. The 6’6″ guard/forward averaged 7.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 20.0 minutes per game, with a shooting line of .455/.308/.767.

Stewart suited up for the Bucks at the California Classic and Las Vegas Summer Leagues last month, getting into six games and averaging 4.8 PPG and 2.5 RPG in 12.8 MPG.

An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed deal that puts a player in line for a bonus worth up to $91K if he’s waived before the season begins and then spends at least 60 days with his team’s G League affiliate. It can also be converted into a two-way deal, but a follow-up tweet from Boone makes it sounds like the Hornets plan to eventually waive Stewart and make him a returning-rights player for the Greensboro Swarm.

The Swarm will have to acquire Stewart’s rights from the Herd via trade at some point in order for him to join the Hornets’ affiliate and earn his Exhibit 10 bonus this fall.

Harden was arrested in June 13 in Houston after police found during a traffic stop that he had a handgun in his vehicle. As Hanna writes, it’s considered a misdemeanor in Texas for an individual to have a gun in “plain view” in a vehicle without a license to carry it.

While the violation is considered punishable by up to a year in jail, Harden will avoid a criminal record after completing an alternative resolution program, court records show. An alternative resolution program allows a defendant to avoid a conviction by performing community service, according to Hanna, who says court documents in Harris County don’t provide the details of Harden’s agreement.

The case had not been considered a factor in Harden’s free agency negotiations with the Cavaliers. Although a deal has not yet been finalized, there has been an expectation for most of the summer that the former Most Valuable Player will eventually return to Cleveland on a two- or three-year contract after declining his $42.3MM player option for 2026/27 in June.

Haynes doesn’t provide any specifics on the terms of the agreement, but given that Williams has no two-way eligibility left and has never been on a standard NBA contract, it seems safe to assume it’ll be a non-guaranteed training camp deal that includes Exhibit 9 and Exhibit 10 language.

Williams, who went undrafted out of Wake Forest in 2022, has bounced back and forth between the NBA and G League over the past four years, spending time with the Nets, Heat, Pistons, and Wizards, as well as their respective NBAGL affiliates.

The 6’4″ guard has only made 13 appearances at the NBA level, but he earned rotation minutes while on a 10-day deal with Washington in February of this year, averaging 11.0 points per game on .615/.357/.875 shooting in four appearances off the bench. That stretch included a 25-point, 10-rebound performance in a win over Indiana on Feb. 20.

A stalwart at the G League level over the last few seasons, Williams set a new career high by scoring 22.5 points per game in 35 outings for the Capital City Go-Go in 2025/26. The 26-year-old also contributed 5.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. In 2023/24, he was named the G League’s Most Improved Player and claimed a spot on the All-NBAGL first team.

There could be a path for Williams to earn a spot on the Wizards’ opening night roster this fall, given that the team is currently carrying 14 players on standard contracts. But unless he has a huge preseason, it seems more likely that he’ll return to the Go-Go to open the season.

As McMenamin writes, James and Love were teammates for several years in Cleveland and have remained close since then, vacationing together earlier this summer. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be an opportunity for Love in Philadelphia this season.

The 76ers are currently just $1.83MM away from their first-apron hard cap with 14 players on standard contracts. Adding a 15th man on a veteran’s minimum contract before the regular season would carry a $2.45MM cap hit, so it won’t be possible until December 4 – when a minimum deal has prorated down to $1.82MM – unless the team makes a roster move to generate additional space below that hard cap.

Waiving Jabari Walker, whose $2.58MM salary is only partially guaranteed for $250K, would be the easiest way to make room for a newcomer. But Walker made a positive impression on the team in a part-time role last season, averaging 4.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 11.9 minutes per game across 64 appearances. Recent reporting has indicated that the front office would prefer to keep him.

When they needed to make room under the first apron to sign Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the Sixers opted to attach a second-round pick to trade Johni Broome to the Clippers rather than cutting Walker, whose agent Rich Paul also represents James, Tyrese Maxey, and Justin Edwards.

Walker also just turned 24 years old last Thursday and may still have room to improve, whereas Love will turn 38 in September and has seen his production decline in recent years. Last season, the five-time All-Star averaged 6.7 PPG and 5.8 RPG in 16.6 MPG over the course of 37 appearances (five starts) for Utah, posting a shooting line of .397/.373/.841.

According to McMenamin, while Love would have interest in reuniting with James to pursue a title in Philadelphia, he also still has a strong relationship with Jazz head coach Will Hardy and was a valued veteran leader in the club’s locker room last season.

As is the case with the 76ers though, it’s unclear whether the Jazz will have room on their regular season roster for Love. Utah is currently carrying 14 players on fully guaranteed contracts, with big man Mo Bamba on a partially guaranteed deal as the potential 15th man.

Reporting last month indicated that Mathews had reached an agreement with the Italian club on a one-plus-one deal, but Olimpia Milano has yet to formally announce it. According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport (hat tip to Sportando), that announcement will likely come sometime after August 15, when Mathews arrives in Italy ahead of the team’s training camp. At that time, he’ll take a physical (which is considered a formality) and officially finalize his contract.

“I’m excited about the opportunity,” Mathews told Pulliam this week. “I didn’t think I’d ever play (overseas), but I got a couple calls with some great offers that were too hard to pass up.”

After going undrafted out of Lipscomb in 2019, the Tennessee native caught on with the Wizards as an undrafted free agent. He subsequently appeared in 329 total regular season games for Washington, Houston, Atlanta, and Indiana across seven seasons from 2019-25, averaging 6.4 points and 1.7 rebounds in 17.3 minutes per contest.

Mathews, whose most recent NBA stint came in the first half of the 2025/26 season on a two 10-day deals and a non-guaranteed contract with the Pacers, is valued most for his shooting ability. The 29-year-old has knocked down 38.2% of 3.9 three-point attempts per game over the course of his NBA career.

After being waived by the Pacers in December, Mathews valued the opportunity to spend some time back home in the greater Nashville area, seeing family and “old friends.” However, he’s looking forward to resuming his career and suggested he hopes to play well enough in Europe to generate renewed interest from NBA teams.

“My ultimate goal is to have a good year and then hopefully get an opportunity to come back to play,” he said.

L.A. also reportedly intends to waive Pedulla and sign guard Jalen Pickett to a two-way deal.

July 21: The Clippers and free agent center Jamarion Sharp have agreed to terms on a two-way contract, agent Scott Nichols tells Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link).

Sharp, who will turn 25 in August, went undrafted out of Ole Miss in 2024 and has played primarily for the Texas Legends in the G League since then. The 7’5″ big man had a huge year for the Legends in 2025/26, earning a spot on the G League’s All-Defensive team and being named NBAGL Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league with 3.9 blocks per game.

Sharp’s rim protection is his calling card. He also led the NCAA in blocked shots in 2021/22 (4.6 per game) and 2022/23 (4.1) while playing for Western Kentucky. Playing for the Raptors at the Las Vegas Summer League this month, he averaged 7.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks in just 18.2 minutes per game across five appearances.

As Scotto notes, the expectation is that Sharp will provide depth in the middle for the Clippers while Yanic Konan Niederhauser recovers following a pair of procedures on his right foot. While the team hasn’t shared a recovery timeline for Niederhauser, it would be a surprise if he’s ready for opening night.

Sean Pedulla and 2026 second-round pick Nick Martinelli currently hold two-way contracts for the Clippers, leaving one open slot, so no corresponding roster move will be necessary to officially sign Sharp.

Torre and Koppelman weren’t able to find evidence that Leonard actually did any endorsement work for Daktronics as part of the agreement, and a source noted that Daktronics hasn’t historically employed celebrity spokespeople, since it’s a B2B (“business-to-business”) company rather than one that sells product to consumers.

The agreement with Daktronics is separate from the one that Leonard had with Aspiration, a now-defunct green banking company that also had a sponsorship deal with the Clippers. Leonard’s contract with Aspiration, described by Torre as a “no-show” endorsement deal, prompted the NBA to launch an investigation into whether the Clippers circumvented the salary cap to pay the star forward beyond his NBA salary.

That investigation, led by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, has taken over 11 months and has yet to wrap up. A July report from The Athletic indicated that the probe had expanded to take into account a potential second undisclosed endorsement deal for Leonard — it’s unclear whether this newly reported agreement with Daktronics is the deal in question, but it would make sense if it is.

Although Leonard’s deal with Daktronics wasn’t made public, a source who worked for Intuit Dome told Torre it was “talked about openly within the organization.”

“It was openly joked about, within people working on the project that knew about this, as it was 1,000 percent a way to circumvent the salary cap,” the source said.

Asked about Leonard’s relationship with Daktronics, a spokesperson representing the company told Torre and Koppelman that the two-time Finals MVP doesn’t have an active contract in place. However, that spokesperson added, “I don’t know what the company wants to say, or can say, given the Wachtell investigation and all that.”

The Clippers and team owner Steve Ballmer have repeatedly denied that they circumvented the NBA salary cap to funnel money to Leonard via endorsement contracts, but they could face penalties – including a sizable fine, the forfeiture of draft picks, and suspensions for executives or Ballmer himself – if the league believes otherwise.

If the NBA looks to levy penalties on the Clippers and/or Leonard based on strong circumstantial evidence without hard proof, Ballmer and the NBPA are likely to push back and seek arbitration, which could delay a resolution on the case until 2027.

That resolution has become all the more crucial after the Raptors reached an agreement this offseason to acquire Leonard from the Clippers in a trade that will send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and draft assets to Los Angeles. That deal is on hold while the Raptors wait to see if Leonard faces any repercussions as a result of the investigation, such as a suspension or even the voiding of his contract.

It’s possible Toronto would decide to move forward on the trade before the case is fully resolved if an arbitration battle focuses more on penalties for the Clippers rather than for Leonard himself.
