Another day, another congressional district, another poll, another huge advantage for one candidate in a crowded field. This time it’s the 9th congressional district and the advantage goes to Mike Sodrel.

According to a poll conducted by Wilson Research Strategies:

Mike Sodrel leads his primary GOP opponents by a wide margin. On a ballot test among 300 likely Republican primary voters in the Ninth District, Sodrel is ahead with 46% compared to Travis Hankins’ 19% and Todd Young’s 13%. Twenty-two percent of voters are still undecided. Among those 46% of voters for Sodrel, 52% identified themselves as “very conservative” voters.

Much like in the 5th congressional district poll, even if one of the challengers picked up the entire undecided percentages the incumbent (or in this case the former incumbent) still comes out on top.

Granted there are till 7+ weeks to go and ground can be gained or lost on all sides. That said, it looks like the 9th is preparing for Rocky 5.

Voters were polled from February 28-March 3, 2010.

Today word came out that the House GOP Conference has just adopted a complete earmark ban for the rest of the year in order to curb spending and hold the Democrats accountable.

Here are what some members of the Republican Study Committee are saying, with two of them being a part of the Indiana Delegation.

Rep. Dan Burton (IN-5)

Because of the irresponsible spending and public outrage over largess in Congress, I have sworn to not request, and to vote against, earmarks since 2007. Until today, I was one of just thirty-two members of Congress to take that pledge. Today, with the entire conference of House Republicans adopting our ban on all earmarks, we have sent a clear message to the American people that we are serious about cutting spending, and serious about an ethical appropriations process in Congress

Rep. Mike Pence (IN-6)

No doubt earmarks are being talked about in a different way by the democratic majority. Democrats were cutting “backroom deals” to persuade reluctant House Democrats to vote for the president’s proposal, and said “the American people want us to change business as usual.

Rep. Eric Cantor (VA-7)

Democrats’ promises to clean up Washington politics “is being broken every day.”

Rep. John Boehner (OH-8)

For millions of Americans, the earmark process in Congress has become a symbol of a broken Washington, Today House Republicans took an important step toward showing the American people we’re serious about reform by adopting an immediate, unilateral ban on all earmarks.

You can read the full article here from The Daily Caller and here is the list of t the 32 members in the Republican Study Committee that signed unto this total earmark ban.

Rep. Steve Austria (R-OH)
Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN)
Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)
Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA)
Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN)
Rep. John Campbell (R-CA)
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)
Rep. Peter Sessions (R-TX)
Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ)
Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA)

I am proud of Reps. Burton and Pence for signing unto this and making it a pledge since 2007. It shows leadership on their part and I wish others from the Indiana Delegation would sign on as well.

This shows the Democrats that the Republicans are serious about curbing spending, putting the focus on getting the economy rolling again and without government intrusion. See the Republicans get it, they understand that spending our way out of a recession with all of these earmarks will not help. The Democrats have always had a policy of spend and tax, tax and spend and it has and won’t work.

The audacity of arrogance on parade! Since, the states and communities can’t do it, BHO can! The Administration insists you raise the bar on your education standards or lose funding; translation- adopt our superior national curriculum standards or no soup cash for you!

From an article on MSN:

Obama wants to expand the federal government’s role in education, which traditionally is a state and local responsibility. His approach has been to use the federal purse as leverage to encourage states to adopt his ideas. Many schools count on a key source of federal aid, known as Title I, to help disadvantaged students — $14.5 billion this budget year. Under Obama’s proposal, to qualify for that money, states would have to adopt and certify that they have “college- and career-ready standards in reading and mathematics.” The deadline for setting the new standards is 2014.

Obama wants to encourage states to enact education standards that the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State Schools Officers are developing. All states but Alaska and Texas have endorsed the effort; Kentucky adopted the standards earlier this month.

there’s more:

The Obama administration wants to see a uniform set of standards in schools nationwide, in hopes that it will make the U.S. more competitive internationally. Many other countries operate under a single set of standards.

National curriculum standards is the wrong direction for ed reform, however, plans are full throttle ahead. We must insist that our governors are not bribed or strong-armed into this heinous, losing scheme. Once the feds own our schools, we will never get them back.

The greatness of the national standard curriculum is utterly irrelevant. Students are not uniform in their abilities and cannot be expected to fit into some national or international mold. Not only will this one-size-fits all fail our students but it will kill innovation in curriculum development. Only a free-market creates the necessary competitive environment that facilitates progress.

I made the point in an earlier post that private schooled students consistently far outscore their public school peers. Now, we have homeschooled students outscoring the private schooled kids. Why is this? Simple: individuality. Homeschooled students are the freest learners. The homeschool curriculum market is vast and varied.

Public school students deserve the same benefits of private and homeschooled kids. We can realize this for them through universal school choice. The free market can see that their individual educational needs are met at half the cost.

We must insist education reform pursues what works, for the sake of our children.

Rational and thinking people would want to, you know, know what was in legislation before it got voted on.

From the Rochester Sentinel:

President Barack Obama wants Congress to vote yes or no on a comprehensive reform measure from the Senate. Donnelly likes a lot about the bill, but its language on abortion is a “fatal flaw.” For him, it is a deal breaker. “I would not vote for it,” he said. He figures there will be a vote within a month or so. The abortion language is unpopular with “a significant” number of congressmen. It has the potential to kill the bill, he said.

And then there’s this:

Donnelly says that health reform is needed, and needed soon. The cost of Medicare is an “unsustainable cost burden” that will “overwhelm” the budget if nothing is done, he said. But, he will not vote for the measure approved in the Senate because of that abortion language.

Medicare is going to go bankrupt, and Donnelly’s solution is to expand Federal health care entitlements to be even bigger?
