The Hopton-on-Sea mobile library service visits every fourth Wednesday, with visits currently scheduled for 8 Feb, 8 March, 5 April, 3 May, 31 May, and 28 June.

The library makes three stops in and around the village, first calling at the White Hart car park from 11:20am to 11:45am, then moving on to the Old Church Road layby from 11.50am to 12:05pm. The final stop is at Rogers Close from 12:10pm to 12:30pm.

A lot of people want to know how to get to Hopton-on-sea by train. The process of getting there via the train is relatively simple

If you are travelling from London take the train from London Liverpool Street to Norwich. You then get the bus to Great Yarmouth from the Market Gates station, arriving at the Turnstone in Hopton-on-Sea. If you are travelling from the North of the country (or Scotland) then you can change from Peterborough to get to Norwich and go from there.

Sea fishing at Hopton is seasonal- From May to October it is an ideal location for bass fishing, from October to April you can go fishing for whiting and dabs and finally from December to February you can fish for codlings. You can access the fishing area on the beach by turning left at Beach Road and going down the concrete slope.

Despite its small size, Hopton-on-Sea is a major regional holiday spot, with the Potters leisure camp and the many caravan parks drawing thousands of visitors each year.The town brings an estimated £10m into the Norfolk economy each year.

The beach has always been at the centre of Hopton’s charm, and, in 2008 locals, visitors, and businesses began to report the loss of beach material, with many blaming the building of a new Outer Harbour in Great Yarmouth, a claim which has repeatedly been denied by the council.

The first new attempt to defend Hopton against further incursions came when Bourne Leisure, owners of the Haven Holiday Village, conducted temporary emergency work with the intention of strengthening the cliff. Using wood, they built a series of tide breaks designed to retain sand and underlying rock. However, despite their investment, the defences proved to be insufficient, and in 2012 they failed and beach access was restricted.

The storm surge of December 2013 only worsened the situation, with caravans having to be moved away from the clifftop, and even more beach material disappearing.

Last year, Bourne revealed plans to build nine new rock groynes designed to permanently protect the cliff. It is also hoped that the specially-designed groynes will aid in the recapture of sand, eventually contributing to a restored beach.

The new defences are nothing to be sniffed at. 85,000 tonnes of Norwegian granite have been placed in a unique ‘fish tail’ shape that projects almost 60m out into the North Sea. The planning was precise, and engineers used state of the art computer modelling to make sure each rock went exactly where it was needed.

One year on, and the design seems to be working. Though recapture of sand has been slow, there is hope that Hopton’s wide expansive beaches may return. What is certain is that despite some seasonal storms, the beach has suffered no further damage. Thanks to the new defences, beach access has been fully restored, and the Norfolk Coastal path, which had formerly had to be rerouted inland, now once again leads down onto Hopton beach.
