Meet Kelly! Kelly started her career at Horizon in 2014 as an intern while she was in grad school. In 2015, she was hired as a Substance Use Counselor, and now works as a Program Director, where she oversees our Perinatal Mental Health Program. What is your “why” for working at Horizon?

I am a firm believer that you don’t end up in this field by accident. Growing up in a family that was impacted by addiction, I felt like I didn’t have anyone who understood or could relate to what I was going through. I knew that I wanted to help others feel heard, improve their lives, and repair relationships with loved ones and others that have been impacted by mental health or substance use.

What opportunities has Horizon provided you that have helped you grow in your career?

Horizon has provided me with the opportunity to take various clinical trainings to help grow and develop my skillset and the skillset of others. I have also been involved in ongoing leadership trainings to help further my advancement and provide opportunities for networking with others in the community.

How do you prioritize your well-being while also growing and developing in your career?

It’s all about finding a balance, which can look different for everyone at different times. I find that when I am intentional about practicing my own self-care (exercising, reading, spending time with friends/family, being in nature) then I can be more present for myself and for others. Being able to advocate for myself has been necessary for my well-being as well.

What would you say to someone who might be interested in growing their career with Horizon?

Depression affects about 332 million people worldwide. Depression can be prompted by genetics, environmental factors, hormonal or biochemical imbalance, and many other factors.

Some individuals affected experience urges that keep them feeling low. We can follow that urge or we can do the “opposite action.” “Opposite actions” promote our body to change our emotions; for example instead of wanting to stay in bed all day, the “opposite action” would be pushing yourself to get out of bed and move to the couch or step outside. These small actions over time can create big change!

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month once again, a time to strengthen understanding, connection, and support within our communities. NAMI’s 2026 theme, “Stigma grows in silence. Healing begins in community,” focuses on sharing the stories and experiences of individuals in our community to challenge stigma and turn silence into connection.

In the spirit of this theme, and in Horizon’s commitment to pushing against stigma and providing quality care to our community, we asked our amazing Horizon team members to share their thoughts on Mental Health Awareness Month and how they prioritize their own mental health. What does Mental Health Awareness Month mean to you?

“Mental Health Awareness month means so much to me. I have been through so much in my life, and have seen so many people who are going through their own battles, that it shows me just how much this month needs to be recognized to see the patterns in our everyday life. When I am going through my everyday life and a battle, I try to remember that I am not alone, and in times when I feel like nobody is on my side, I remember the people I have around me working just as hard for their own story.”

What is something you do each week to prioritize your mental health?

“I always try to have at least some time when I disconnect from electronics and just sit. Whether that’s just quietly enjoying nature on my porch or reading a physical book on my couch with my cat. It’s a way to sort of put all the background noise of the world on mute for an hour or two and recalibrate outside of all the noise.”

What would you tell someone who is hesitant to reach out for mental health support?

“You do not need to fight this alone; service providers are there to be your allies in your struggles and to help you find your way to the other side of it.”

What are your main focuses of practice?

I mainly work with patients 18 years of age and older who are in need of psychiatric services.

What other areas of the medical field have you worked in prior to Horizon?

Before joining Horizon, I worked as a Registered Nurse in a neurosurgical ICU, in a pediatric ICU, and a step-down telemetry floor.

What’s your why? (What makes Horizon special to you? What motivates you to contribute your best every day?)

I want to take care of patients the way I’d want my family to be taken care of. Also, compared to previous roles I’ve held, the culture and focus on work-life balance at Horizon is a breath of fresh air.

What would you tell a patient or family member who may be hesitant to reach out for help? What would you want them to know about our services and treatment?

Horizon team members truly care about doing a great job and working together for their patients. Since joining Horizon, several of my patients have shared that they are very happy with the organization, how it is run, and the culture here.

What is your “why” for working at Horizon?

Horizon’s mission to support the community by providing excellent substance use and mental health treatment, while also providing a great place to work and grow your career, is why I started here 8 years ago – and why I’m still here today!

What opportunities has Horizon provided that have helped you grow in your career?

At Horizon, you always have the opportunity to learn and take on new challenges. I started off working at the IT Help Desk, mostly troubleshooting hardware and computer issues. Once I discovered that I was interested in networking and cloud software, Horizon provided the resources for me to further my training and education on those topics. Horizon has a great Horizon University team that provides trainings for employees on a wide range of subjects.

How do you prioritize your well-being while also growing and developing in your career?

One of the benefits of working at Horizon is the flexibility in scheduling, along with the amount of PTO and holidays that are offered. Although being in the IT field may require you to work on a moment’s notice when something goes wrong, I never feel burnt out because there is plenty of PTO to take time off when you need it. Plus, the amount of PTO you get continues to grow the longer you stay with Horizon!

What would you say to someone who might be interested in growing their career with Horizon?

Horizon is a great place to work if you’re looking to further your career and development within your field. I started here just a few weeks after graduating college and never could have imagined the number of things that I would learn and the opportunities I would be given. Horizon has such a large presence in WNY, and as a leader in the healthcare sector, there is always room for you to grow in new ways here.

Did you know that Black birthing individuals face significantly more physical and mental health concerns during pregnancy than other women?

The week of April 11th to April 17th is Black Maternal Health Week, a time to amplify the voices and experiences of Black mothers and birthing individuals. During this week, we encourage all to consider the disparities and lack of access to care often faced by Black individuals, and how we can bring attention to these disparities to increase quality care.

This week and throughout the year, we encourage all to acknowledge and advocate for increased awareness of perinatal mental health concerns.

Risk Factors:

Social and racial disparities can have a large impact on the mental health of individuals who are pregnant, struggling with fertility or loss, or any other concerns during pregnancy.

Birthing individuals, as well as adoptive parents, partners, or parents via surrogacy are at a higher risk of developing a perinatal mental health concern if they have experienced the following:

• History or family history of depression, substance use or other mental health problems
• Difficult relationships or lack of support from partner, friends or other family members
• Financial or housing stressors
• Young maternal age
• Stressful life events, home relocation, death of a family member, etc.
• Sleep difficulties
• Pregnancy complications and/or traumatic birth
• Grief and loss of pregnancy/baby (miscarriage, termination, stillbirth)
