DragonCon 2017 was a massive success and a great time for us!
Some of the highlights:

Thank you! to our friends Lori, Rob, and Lily (not pictured but much appreciated) who helped us keep the booth running smoothly! And thank you as always to people like Thom, Jesse, Mike, and the Comics track who kept us all moving in the right direction. Thank you to Q and Liz of the Alt History track for including Horror In Clay in the
Museum of Alternate History.

"The Art of the Tiki" panel was standing room only and turning people away. Hopefully that means there will be more tiki programing (maybe a 101 and 201 panels) in the future! Derek Yaniger, SHAG, Robert Jimenez, Michael Gordon and I were thoroughly entertaining if I do say so my self (but don't take my word for it..there is video. When It surfaces I'll link it here. ETA Mid Sept).

What do you mean, a "Mutant" Mug? Is this trash?

NOPE! Not trash! After almost 5 years of working with ceramics, picking them up, putting them down, and quality checking and rechecking, we were bound to have a few mugs with a little more personality than usual. They might have a birthmark, glaze wart, thick glaze, minor chip, or other slight defect that makes them unique. They may be ultra dark, or super light. Text might be a little wonky in places. These mugs are high fired and safe for drinking, but for one reason or another we’ve chosen to hold them back rather than sell them for full price…until now! Great for drinking and carrying around, if you tend to keep your best mugs shelved!

Right off the bat, let me say I didn't expect to find any tiki hiding out in the Outer Banks of North Carolina (OBX for short). Pirate themes, nautical and shipwreck dive bars, maybe, but not what I would call tiki in the Donn Beach poly-pop sense. Surprise! I found some! I also found some other neat things.

Strangely, I found a tiki Lelani mug as part of the decor in a "meat and three" restaurant in Columbia, NC called "Crossroads" as soon as I got to the area. Food was fair. Finding that before I even made it onto the islands is what inspired this article (no picture though).

Next tiki sighting was a Wayne Coombs style totem, 5 feet tall, painted in all the primary colours of tiki devolution. It was in the parking lot of a surf shoppe called Secret Spot Surf Shop in Nags Head, NC. I didn't get to go in, initially, but there will be a lot more on this place later.

There was a place called "The Wrek" tiki bar (http://www.thewreckobx.com/) in a marina near the landing for the Hatteras ferry. It seemed to at least be trying to have a tropical/tiki vibe... the entry was surrounded by cheap wooden masks screwed together to make faux poles. Sadly, it was only open lunch times and week ends, so we couldn't go inside. Snooping their facebook page on the long drive back to Kitty Hawk shows a fun looking marina bar with music and booze.

As a general note, we loved the look and feel of the small rental town area on Ocracoke island near the lighthouse. We'd love to rent a house with friends and stay there a week. Cars seemed outnumbered by rented bikes and a few golfcarts. It looked like a really chill place to spend a week and enjoy some old relaxed beachtime fun.

On the way back from Hatteras we stopped at the Froggy Dog...a seafood and grill place (http://www.froggydog.com/). Not tiki in any way, but a good waystop. Food was fair, their Painkiller made an attempt at accuracy, and and their other drinks (like the hurricane) were at least tasty if not accurate. Also, the bar area looked like it had a great selection for a roadhouse or restaurant. Probably a fair place for a normal dive bar evening or as a place to break up a drive to see the Hatteras lighthouse.

Next day we tried a joint we had high hopes for..Mama Kwan's Tiki Bar & Grill. (http://www.mamakwans.com/). Mama did not disappoint! Food and drinks were great! Bac-bac matting, and bamboo trim covered all the walls and ceiling. The menu was filled with Chinese-Hawaiian tiki bar menu standard fare at great prices. The pork plate was savory and delicious! The fried dumplings were extra crispy, and the slaw and the cucumber salad crunchy and good.
(edited to add: Evidently Mama Kwan's was in the book "Tiki Road Trip" so you know it's legit!)

Not only did they have a good drinks menu for a touristy eatery, the drinks were good, and served in Dynasty Wholesale mugs you got to keep. The joint would actually have a TiPSY (Tikis Per Square Yard) score, as there were totems and masks hanging around. Online reviews suggests the place actually gets hopping with a small dance floor some nights, but we enjoyed a leisurely meal with drinks with no wait.

Our "best cocktails" award (and food so good we went twice) went to the Black Pelican Seafood Company (www.blackpelican.com/). You should go, if you're ever in the OBX. Don't fear the crowd or a wait (there will probably be one...the food is great) Get a buzzer from the hostess and go get drinks from the upstairs bar, browse the gift shop, or just sit and watch the ocean. The restaurant is housed in the same life-saving station from which the Wright Brothers sent their historic telegram

"Success four flights thursday morning all against twenty one mile wind started from Level with engine power alone average speed through air thirty one miles longest 57 seconds inform Press home Christmas."

Seriously, the food was SO GOOD.

In the outside bar of the Black Pelican, ask for a Pelican Punch. It's a tasty drink, made with locally distilled "Kill Devil Rum" from Outer Banks Distilling. The hill at the Wright Brother's State Park is called Kill Devil Hill, reputedly because an old slang name for "Rum", "Rhum", or "Rumbustion" was "Kill Devil". The hill was so named because barrels of rum would wash up in the Outer Banks amidst wreckage from shipwrecks and be hidden around the area by locals and smugglers and the hill was a popular place to do that. The area of the Outer Banks is called the Graveyard of the Atlantic because there are so many wrecks. (Maybe I can get them to carry some Cask of Amontillado Rum Barrels in the gift shop).

After having the Pelican Punch and learning Kill Devil Rum was local (on Roanoke Island), we HAD to go on the distillery tour (http://outerbanksdistilling.com/). It was very well worth it! Outer Banks Distilling was the 14th private distillery in North Carolina, started by Adam Ball and Kelly Bray (who worked in local craft breweries) and Matt Newsome and Scott Smith (who have decades of bartending experience between them). The distillery is very new (at the time of this writing I believe they were on batch 10) but the rum is good, the tour is excellent, and the guys are really nice. (I met Matt and Scot during the tour). The still is a shiny gorgeous beastie from Germany. The guys have all kinds of plans (they started a batch of what will be dark rum, and have plans for some very interesting rums in the future), and some excellent relationships with other local businesses. (For example, contributing to rum balls, contributing fertilizer to a local farmer, etc).

The guys are locals (a bartender told me 3 of them actually live in Kill Devil Hills) and they are REALLY passionate. Go give 'em a high five! Try their rum. Maybe help ‘em bottle (they sign all their bottles! Pro Tip: Look for the Blackbeard bottle, or the one “signed” in the name of Scott’s dog…I think his name was “Otto”?).

Remember I mentioned the Secret Spot Surf Shop with the painted tiki out front? (http://www.secretspotsurfshop.com/) When I went closer for my obligatory tiki selfie, I saw that in addition to the one I could see, there were some other, MUCH BETTER natural tikis outside as well (carved with “Kapu Tiki” not sure if that is a carver or company). SO many that I had to go inside and ask about them...where I found something very cool. The owner had, at one point in the distant past, filled his garage with large hand-carved tiki from The Philippines. Like, more than I could take pictures of, and some of them were very interesting.

Massive score in Secret Spot if you are looking for a 3 to 6 foot tiki. Looks like the prices range from about $450 - $600. It also looks like a great surf and skate shop. (For the surfers, OBX does seem to have reasonable waves for the East Coast, but I don't surf so I can't vouch). Regardless, finding that many carvings to browse was very very cool. The staff was very willing to chat with me about the carvings, and let me see some of the ones not on the floor yet...I highly recommend checking them out (and buying a little something).

Otherwise, I didn't see too much tiki in the Outer Banks (but I did see WAY more than I expected).

Several of the beach shops had the tourist junk tiki masks imported by the caseload from Bali.

If you are collecting tiki-selfies with Tiki carvings in OBX, there was a smoke shop that had a nice looking 5ft black plastic Ku with glowing eyes by the door on the east side of the road and a generic Coombs style guy at a seafood restaurant on the west side of the road...both north of the Wright Bro's park in Kitty Hawk. There are several outside the Secret Spot, and one at the base of Mama Kwan’s sign. Any shop on the strip sells selfie sticks. (:P)

Edit: Other places I'm told I should investigate next time:
Goombay's - Not really tiki but good caribbean cuisine & serves a drink in a souvenir tiki glass. Rundown cafe - Pacific rim cuisine and a few totems.

Not Tiki, but there are two other things we did on the trip I can’t recommend enough for fans of anachronistic attractions.

First, the Lost Colony production (running on Roanoke Island since 1937!) was wonderful, and if you spring for the VIP back stage tour it is even better (http://www.outerbanks.com/the-lost-colony.html). Cannot recommend enough. Theater in the round, with pyrotechnics. Too cool.

Second, if it isn’t too far out of your way, consider hitting up the gloriously garish treat “Pedro’s South of the Border” (http://www.thesouthoftheborder.com). Stay overnight, even. The rooms are cheap, and you get to see the glorious neon. Seriously, the neon should be a protected American Heritage site. Don’t expect anything top flight, DO pay the $2 to ride to the top of the giant sombrero, and take a look around. Carnival rides are $8 for unlimited rides (and that includes minigolf) and you can get frozen margaritas in the Sombrero Restaurant. (DO get bumperstickers for a dime, DO NOT get the nachos).

SO; do you live in the Outer Banks? Did I miss a killer tiki spot? Want to tell me how the surfing is, or share pirate stories? A coupon code to the first person who sends me a complete set of the "OBX tiki selfies" listed above.
Track me down at http://www.horrorinclay.com or @Cthulhumug on Twitter.

Cheers!

Grated nutmeg

peppermint bitters

3oz Kraken Dark spiced rum

At its heart, the drink is a Bumbo, which is then set ablaze: Firstly heat up two tankards boiled water, set those aside to warm. Grate some Cinnamon and Nutmeg into a pewter goblet. Fill a mixing glass with water and place the goblet inside. Place an absinthe spoon above the goblet with two sugar cubes on top. Saturate the cubes with a few drops of Peppermint bitters.

Then comes the fun part: Dump all but around 25ml of the water from the blazer mugs. Add about 3oz of Kraken to one of the mugs and set it on fire. VERY carefully, pour the flaming rum back and forth from mug to mug, each time increasing the distance between the two in order to get that famous blue strand of flame.

After 4 or 5 good pours, pour the rum over sugar cubes. It's essential that you do this whilst the flames are still burning; this allows the sugar to caramelize. After the sugar has been broken down, give it a little stir with the spoon to combine everything fully. Remove the goblet from the mixing glass and enjoy!

Give us a brief rundown of your awards list and competition history.

My accolades are quite modest, to be fair, relative to the rest of the bartending world. I’ll never forget my first competition; I was lucky enough to take 1st place. November 11th 2011. It was for Grand Marnier. It was citywide but I didn’t know at the time, after I’d won, I’d be the only Scotsman being taken over to the Grand Marnier Chateau in Bordeaux. Here, I competed against bartenders from various countries as far afield as Australia. I placed 3rd, which I suppose isn’t too bad considering I was up against some major players. That gave me the motivation to enter other competitions for brands including Diplomatico rum, AquaRiva tequila, Kraken rum, Martin Miller’s Gin, 42 Below and more. I get a lot of support from my wife; Sian, and it’s down to this that I’ve won or placed in every competition I’ve entered. I’m a lucky guy.

You said you’ve used our products to win a competition…could you tell me a little more about that?

Yeah! I took part in the UK’s Ultimate Kraken Hunter competition. Almost a thousand bartenders from all over the UK were whittled to 10 for the semi finals and then 5 for the UK final, in London. My drink was inspired by an old Caribbean/Privateer concoction.

At its heart, the drink is a Bumbo, which is then set ablaze: Firstly heat up two tankards boiled water, set those aside to warm. Grate some Cinnamon and Nutmeg into a pewter goblet. After the sugar has been broken down, give it a little stir with the spoon to combine everything fully. Remove the goblet from the mixing glass and enjoy “The Demon in The Dark”.

I’m from a small fishing town in the far north east of Scotland, so I told the judges about our history, our stories and some of the real exploits of the fishermen I knew back home. To emphasize that I was indeed the UK’s ULTIMATE Kraken Hunter, I showed the crowd a trophy I’d taken from the first Kraken I’d killed: I held aloft the Horror In Clay Tentacle jigger with pride, the only man to have faced the beast and lived…albeit, a baby beast.

This presentation won me the title and the coveted hunter ring. It’s the only one in the world.

What was your earliest exposure to heavily themed restaurants? To Tiki?

My friends, Mike McGinty and Andy Stewart (who were the first to teach me about bartending) were actually the guys who kick-started *pun intended* me down the Tiki trade routes. They would tell me little bits of history as they made me, ever more elaborately garnished and complex drinks. I sat at the bar, soaking up the stories of Donn Beach, Trader Vic and then learning from the new wave of Tiki ‘tenders like Beachbum Berry. Of course, along the way, I soaked up some rum!

You’ve been all over the world competing as a bartender. What are some of your favorite locations?

Where do I start!? Well, straight off the bat, I’d have to say PDT in New York. Jim Meehan helped me propose to my wife there and even got me behind the bar to make some drinks. For that, I was honored. On top of that, every time we’re back in New York, we head to Amory Amargo.

I began learning my craft in Aberdeen (Scotland) so that’ll always have a little place in my heart. I got to stretch my wings a little which is why I’m still bartending. From there, it’s taken me to New York, Manchester, Leeds, Paris, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bordeaux. This business is nuts, but it’s the most fun you’ll ever have in your life and every new city means new friends.

Tell us a story or two…what’s the strangest thing (perhaps spookiest) that’s happened to you behind the tap?

I started working as a bar-back (glass collector and general dogsbody – for those who don’t know the industry) in Ninety-nine Bar & Kitchen. Back then, it was a sorta up and coming place in Aberdeen. Downstairs in the cellar always felt a little weird, but hey it’s a cellar, right? Those places aren’t exactly the kitchen at parties. Anyway, I’d been down there, digging through some boxes trying to find some bamboo canes I’d bought ages ago. You know that way when you feel someone behind you? I figured it was one of the guys on shift, grabbing some stock or changing a keg. I glance up and saw someone out of the corner of my eye and began explaining what I was doing “Big competition coming up. Have you seen those bamboo poles?” Silence.

“Hello? Yes or no, have you seen them?" Silence.

Turned round and there was no one there. Normally, I’d figure they hadn’t heard me and ran back upstairs to finish up. This was different. Then it hit me, the figure had been wearing a white shirt and trousers. At the time, the dress code was a little more casual, so no one was wearing that kinda thing and the chefs had all left for the night. It creeped me out so I left, thinking some dude had snuck downstairs. No one had seen anything, nothing was missing and nothing on CCTV. When I explained to the guys on shift, they simply shrugged “Ah, that’ll be the guy who used to own this place”.

I later found out, one of the owners, many years ago, had been victimized for being gay. He couldn’t take the constant abuse and had hanged himself in the cellar. Needless to say, I never spent any longer than I had to, in the cellar after that.

What are your most popular or favorite ingredients and "go-to" brands lately? Favourite rum?

I couldn’t say what my favourite rum is. I haven’t tried them all…yet. Rum’s so versatile, my preference depends on my mood and, of course, the drink I’m making/drinking. That said, however, Diplomatico, Appletons, Bacardi and Havana Club are like swiss army knives in the right hands.

At the moment, I’m reading up on as much Tiki culture as I can possibly get my hands on; specifically where Gin is found in those styles of drinks. On January 1st, I became the UK Brand Ambassador for Rock Rose gin, thanks to my exploits behind the bar. The Fogcutter, Saturn and Winchester are perhaps the most famous. I just need to find more! Craft Gin’s are HUGE right now in Europe so to marry both worlds would be amazing!

Pretty much everything I’m using right now, as you would imagine, is based around Rock Rose. It’s a really interesting liquid and I’m on a mission to find out all the flavours it works with.

What is the Tiki scene like in Scotland?

Honestly, it can be a hit or a miss. There are few Tiki bars in Scotland, which is a shame. The weather here is generally harsh and cold. We could use a little Polynesian passion sometimes, if only to forget about reality.

Some places hold Tiki events or Tiki nights, ranging from weekly to yearly. Any I’ve been to are, pretty much, the wildest thing you can think of. I accidentally started a weekly Tiki night in my old bar, through sheer laziness: Someone bailed on their shift (tsk tsk tsk) so I was called in to cover at VERY short notice. I spoke to my boss on the phone, saying I’d come in and cover, on the condition that I could host an impromptu Tiki night and wear a Hawaiian shirt. This was partly due to my obsession with Tiki and partly that this was the only shirt I had clean at the time! Tiki Tuesday was born!

3 years later and my old bar have only JUST stopped doing them (change in management). I’m quite proud of that.

Scotland makes some awesome contributions to Horror movies and stories (“Dog Soldiers”, a highland werewolf story, is one of my favorites). Any guidance on authors or films I should check out?

Dog Soldiers is one of my favourites! Especially the “there is no spoon” line. Kills me that it’s set in Scotland but was actually filmed in Luxembourg – I’m a bit of a film buff. Of course, The Wicker Man. One, I think, you may be interested in is Lord Of Tears. It’s based around a character found in Scot’s pagan lore and when you see it, you can be forgiven for thinking that Lovecraft had a hand in it. Other notables: The 39 steps and Braveheart – the historical inaccuracies of that film will haunt me forever ;-)

Literature-wise: Shelley and Stoker were HUGELY influenced by the Scottish countryside. Victor Frankenstein visits Orkney, in the novel. That’s one you can’t argue with, as being a benchmark for horror literature. Also, the stories of beasts like the Kelpies and Selkies are legendary, capturing the minds of generations. If you haven’t read it, pick up Muriel Gray’s The Ancient.

Do you have a favorite story by Lovecraft or Edgar Allen Poe?

I must confess, with Lovecraft’s work, it’s the imagery associated with his work that first captured me. Cthulu, Janai’ngo, and M’basui Gwandu are the things of nightmares. Anyone with an active imagination would find it hard to sleep after reading about them. Poe on the other hand, everyone should have read “The Raven”, but I’m a fan of “The Tell-tale Heart” and his short story “Manuscript Found In A Bottle”.

Do you have a recipe you like to serve in your Cthulhu mug?

As a father, I'm proud to help support Women In Horror Recognition Month. #WIH666 Let's show all the kids of all ages and all genders they can do whatever the hell they want, and let's double emphasize for our girls they can do, like, and say whatever they challenge themselves with. Anyone saying "Girls shouldn't like gross things, horror things, ghastly things" (or anything really) should shut up and get out of the way.

There are many ways to support artists and creators; usually time and treasure goes the furthest, so I spent some time spotlighting some of my favorite women working in the horror field and showing off some projects I support.

First up, I'd like to introduce you to Anya Martin, who I consider a touchstone in the Atlanta horror scene. I first met Anya at the first event I attended as Horror In Clay, the Rockabilly Luau. (Anya was there repping her alt culture project, ATLRetro.com which is my favorite place to check for things to do in Atlanta). Turns out, she is also into horror in a big way (she is the programming director for World Horror Con in Atlanta this year, and is generally present (in spirit at least) at pretty much every nifty horror thing in the city).

She writes: I’m a storyteller in prose, comics and journalism whose passion is delving into the whimsical and bitter truths of reality through the lens of the often but not always dark fantastique. Her most recent work includes the story “Resonator Superstar!” in the anthology Resonator: New Lovecraftian Tales From Beyond edited by Scott R. Jones for Martian Migraine Press. Anya will also have work (the story “Sensoria”) in Giallo Fantastique, an anthology edited by Ross Lockhart for Word Horde Press. AnyaMartin.com

Delilah is an acquaintance of mine through PDMI Publishing editor Clay Gilbert who I met Anachrocon last year. She is a highly engaging correspondent through social media, and a fun fan of horror, cosplay, and fiction.
I'm Delilah S. Dawson, and I'm horrible. Or, at least, I've been a fan of Horror ever since I swiped my mom's copy of Pet Sematary when I was 10. My first YA book, Servants of the Storm, has been labeled Southern Gothic Horror, which pleases my cold, black heart, while my next YA, Hit, is being called a Thriller and focuses on teen assassins in a bank-owned America. In both cases, I love writing about strong women, a high body count, and maybe, just maybe, some kissing. Even my Blud series, billed as Steampunk Romance, has tinges of Horror, including blood-drinking horses. What can I say? Blood's funner than water. WhimsyDark.com.

Once upon a time I had the singular experience of being on a horror movie panel where the attendees and panelists were evenly matched. Fortunately one of the other panelists was the wickedly hilarious Tonia Brown. We had a pretty damn good time engaging the audience on such diverse topics as kaiju sex and on who, if stripped of powers and magically made the same size, would win a MMA match between Cthulhu or Godzilla.

Hi! I am Tonia Brown, author, complainer and professional cat petter. I hail from a tiny little town in the back hills of NC where I live with my husband of many, many years as well as an ever fluctuating number of felines. I write in many different genres, including horror. I started reading horror at a young age when I overdosed on fantasy and got tired of it. I began with classics like Poe and worked my way up to Matheson and King, while also watching a fair dose of horror films alongside. When I took up writing in my adult life, I began with romance because I wasn’t certain horror was something I could tackle. It wasn’t that I thought of it as a male job, or that I couldn’t do it because I was a woman. I just didn’t know if I had it in me to scare the pee out of folks the way I was spooked as a kid. Eventually, I decided to try and tap into that same passion that still drove me to watch horror movies and read horror novels, and now it’s one of the many genres I love to explore. I tend to temper my horror with humor such as in the novels Badass Zombie Road Trip or Lucky Stiff, both from Books of the Dead. I also do straight up horror like Devouring Milo or the recently re-released Skin Trade from Permuted Press. www.ToniaBrownAuthor.com

Death to False Grenadine

It's holiday time, and that means everyone is trying to make sweet, sweet cocktails to dull the pain of old family wounds. Or to enjoy friends and the gatherings with which the season is rife. Or, of course, to celebrate the solstice and the return of the Old Ones.

Regardless, red is a color of the seasons, and the quickest way to sweeten up and make festive a plain old cocktail is Grenadine. Sweet, syrupy, and red. This is where people start to go horribly, HORRIBLY wrong.

That half full, stuck shut bottle of Rose's Grenadine you've had sitting since last season? Kill it with fire. Throw it out.

If you think Rose’s makes Grenadine, you’ve been lied to.
Rose’s makes cherry-flavoured corn syrup. Actually, per Wikipedia "The Mott's brand "Rose's" is by far the most common brand of grenadine sold in the United States, and is formulated from (in order of concentration): high fructose corn syrup, water, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, FD&C Red #40, natural and artificial flavors, and FD&C Blue #1.[4] In Europe, Bols still manufactures grenadine with pomegranate".

Grenadine should be made with pomegranate juice. I have it on good authority that juicing pomegranates is not worth it and that POM or Trader Joe’s pomegranate juice does a better job. The trick is to get 100% pomegranate juice...but don’t worry; making grenadine is easy.

If you have some Rose’s in your bar, never fear...you can improve it immensely by mixing it 50/50 with fresh POM and shaking the hell out of it. Trust me, the difference is night and day.

You can make grenadine using "hot process" (by heating the juice to reduce it and blend in sugar) and by using "cold process" (by shaking the hell out of it to get the same effect).
Hot process is great, and fast, but can scorch if you aren’t careful. Holds up a little better in a multi-ingredient cocktail. I usually go with hot process. Enjoy.

Hot Process
2 Cups POM
1 Cup Sugar
Splash of hi-proof booze (Let's go with Wray and Nephew overproof rum) as a preservative.

Pour two cups of POM into a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer over medium-low heat until reduced by half. Add one cup of sugar, and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool; if desired, add high-proof vodka or grain alcohol as a preservative (it also keeps well, and doesn’t freeze solid, in a plastic container in the freezer).

This process produces a grenadine that has a deeper color and a richer flavor. While the cold process makes a grenadine that is fresh and light, the hot process makes a more intensely flavored end product, with a distinct “cooked” taste. It’s still not as sweet as the commercial versions, so you may need to alter the proportions in your cocktail recipes, but the rich, red color is there.

Imbibe magazine grenadine. (Cold process)
2 cups POM (or Trader Joes) passionfruit juice
1 cup ultra fine sugar
2 tbsp Orange Flower Water #
“Splash” (1 oz) Wray and Nephew overproof (as preservative)- shake
like hell and voila, you got homemade grenadine, no cooking or
reduction involved.

# Orange Flower Water is distilled from orange blossoms, and doesn’t taste like oranges at all. You can find it in better-stocked grocery stores, or specialty food stores, especially those with a good Mediterranean section. If all else fails, there’s Amazon. Monteaux is a good brand.

Lucy has some advice for all you folks starting on your Krampus costumes for next year:

Glue guns are your best friend.

Industrial velcro is also your best friend.

Look for traditional cowbells online or my favorite: ebay.

You can modify costume horns you find in the store by just painting them or attaching them to a headband or if ya wanna go big, into a headpiece.

Weave hair is also helpful for that long fur look if you don't have access to faux fur by the yard.

It was there that I had my first real (no pineapple juice/grenadine/rum float) Mai Tai and Zombie. I was instantly hooked and obsessed with these drinks.

Down in Georgia, we're used to lots of rum variety since we're so near the Caribbean. What's the rum scene like in the Pacific Northwest?

The rum scene in the PNW is definitely present with place like Hale Pele, Rumba, Rum Club and myself all carrying hundreds of unique bottles of rum. Some stuff can be a challenge to get, but if there is a will, there is a way.

I enjoy rum styles more so than individual bottles. Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad are some of my heavily used styles.
Top 5 rums:
1. Appleton 21yr
2. Plantation 20th Anniversary
3. Panama Red Overproof
4. St. Lucia Distillers 1931
5. Anything from Plantation and Lost Spirits really.

Agricole rhums can be definitely overlooked. And I love anything Overproof.

Tell us a little bit about how you came to open the Tacoma Cabana & Rum Bar.

I came to open and operate the Tacoma Cabana because I was obsessed with these classic tiki drinks that I had at Okolemaluna Tiki Lounge. Nobody was doing it in the area (at least not that I knew of. Rumba, Hale Pele and myself all opened within a month of each other) and I thought it would be awesome to recreate some of these old drinks, make a few of my own and do it all in front of a giant wall of rum.

Tiki Kon has been around since 2007, and grew out of NW Tiki Crawls before that. How did you find yourself in the B.G Reynolds Iron TikiTender contest?

It was an open call for applications nationwide. You had to submit an original recipe using the sponsors' products and a bio. Three of us were picked from that. I was lucky enough to be chosen.

I found myself in the Iron Tikitender competition in a manner of trial and error. When I first heard about it, I was fixated on making a drink with these five ingredients: Jamaican rum, okolehao, lilikoi syrup, Campari and citrus (lime). I couldn't get the balance right and after weeks of giving it my best shot, I through in the towel. BG Reynolds announced he was extending the deadline by 48 hours. I knew I had one more shot at it. So I went down to the Cabana, added 8 other ingredients to it, messed around with the ratios just a little bit until we arrived at the Eldritch Zombie. The rest is history.

Can you give our fans a little taste of what Tiki Kon was like? Were you on any panels/classes?

This was my first Tiki Kon. I was really excited to be there and to actually get to participate in it was the icing on the cake. Classes. Iron Tikitender Panel, more seminars and the big competition...Iron Tikitender!
The classes were awesome. Lot's of big names and great info. Lots of events and activities where sure to keep everyone entertained. The Tiki Kon marketplace was excellent as well. Munktiki and Vantiki were both on hand selling mugs and other wares. All in all, Tiki Kon was amazing and I can't wait to get back next year with more hands on involvement.

Can you give us instructions for building your winning recipe for Iron TikiTender, or is that forbidden lore? What do you call it?

On building a winning recipe: I didn't know what the mystery ingredient was gonna be so I was prepared to focus on balance and complimentary flavors. I didn't want to go to crazy, but I didn't want to play it totally safe. The mystery ingredient was Don Q Gran Anejo and that left the gates wide open for me to do what ever I wanted with what was available that day. I'm more than happy to share my recipe. It doesn't have a name as of yet, but I plan on tying it into to theme of Tiki Kon this year, Mysteries of the Deep.

That garnish looks intense! Tell us about it. (In general, I'd say you could teach a master-class on impressive garnishes)

There was a "Most Garish Garnish" round. We were allowed to bring anything we wanted for garnishes. There was plenty of stuff on hand to use as well. I used a small little food hibachi that was ordered from amazon. Can't recall the name. Basically took out the important part and stuffed it in the pineapple. Sterno is the fuel for that.
I knew I wanted to light a pineapple on fire and that's just what I did. We ended up hollowing it out enough go fit a hibachi grill in it. Two south African baby pineapples hang from the sides like torches. The pineapple was garnished with flowers, fresh fruit skewers and rumaki to be grilled on top of the pineapple.

(Here's what Jason recommends for coring a pineapple).

The mini Hibachi was also off Amazon and powered by sterno.

Horror and you. Are you a horror movie fan? What are some favs?

I'm definitely a horror fan. Most of it stems from brutally heavy metal. Bands like GWAR, Cannibal Corpse, Slayer and Deicide were staples in my childhood. I also grew up in the era of Nightmare on Elm Street,Friday the 13th, Reanimator, and all of the Puppet Master movies. I'm also a SciFi fan just as long as it is not Star Wars. Can't do the Star Wars. I used to play Xbox and the Gears of War story was a huge influence on me as well.

Do you have a favorite story by Lovecraft or Edgar Allen Poe?

I'm honestly not a huge fan of Poe. Nothing against him, just never felt the need to read one of his books.
I'm new to the Lovecraft stories, so I'm still playing catch up. Obviously the Call of Cthulhu and the Shadow Over Innsmouth are standouts. I'm looking forward to the Dunwich Horror, Pickman's Model, and the Colour Out Of Space.
Whargoul by Dave Brockie was an excellent read and one of my favorites.
I also read a ton of scientific books by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, David Greene, Michio Kaku, Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins and Mary Roach. Ancient Egyptian history and the history of spirits and cocktails round out my library.

Thanks, Jason, for taking the time to share your experiences, and Congratulations! Any Horror In Clay fans visiting Tacoma should definitely go visit the Tacoma Cabana & Rum Bar!

Back in the pre-prohibition days, a bar was known for its bitters as well as its signature drinks (indeed, the bitters were a crucial component). We thought it only fitting that our signature drinking vessels from Pickman's Cove and the Gilman House lounge had complimentary bitters of their own. It's the whole deal. Killer label, shelf appeal, great taste, awesome back story...the perfect compliment to your home or professional bar.

They work really well in most drinks you can put them in from a Hemingway Daiquiri to a Rhum Old-Fashioned (an Eldritch Fashioned, if you will)[1]..

Kick up your Mai Tai a notch or two. Make that Zombie extra sinister. TRANSFORM YOUR COCKTAIL!

A unique blend of spices makes a gloriously non-euclidean bitters; the perfect compliment to your Horror In Clay Tiki mugs! Our first flavour, Fiendishly Tropical Bitters, has a spicy flavour profile redolent of molasses, grapefruit, allspice, cinnamon, and vanilla.

If you are newer to this whole “bitters thing,” you can substitute Fiendishly Tropical Bitters in almost any recipes that call for aromatic bitters. You can also use them:

A) In any Booze& drink: Captain & Coke, Dark & Stormy, etc.(to taste, maybe 4-7 drops)

B) In something like a highball that is mostly booze and bitters.(several drops to taste)

C) Add a few drops on top of vanilla ice crème and fruit (try peaches), (About 4 drops)

D) Add a few drops to a flute of Champaign for added zest.

You’ll mostly notice the bitters on the “nose” (smell/taste) and “finish” (aftertaste) of a cocktail Enjoy!

If you are an old hand at using bitters in your drink, you’ll appreciate that our bitters utilize spirits from Yahara Bay Distillers. Our bitters are created by hand, and do not use any extracts or oils; only “raw” ingredients.

Good in any recipe that calls for aromatic bitters, but we specifically fine tuned it to compliment a Dark and Stormy (especially with some of the spicier Ginger beers), a fine Demerera highball, or a double scoop'a vanilla ice creme and peaches.

Initially available in 1oz bottles, 39% Alcohol by Volume, Handcrafted, Small-Batch production. We hope to expand to 5oz bottles in the coming months.

We're all about cocktails[2], and about helping you host a perfectly unique night for yourself or whoever you happen to dig up.

We partnered with Bittercube (who make my other favourite small-batch bitters[3]) to come up with a unique flavour profile for our first entry into the cocktail additives market.

These bitters bring a balance of allspice with muted cinnamon along with a coordinated molasses and tart grapefruit balance.

Pairs up well against drinks with a sweeter pineapple flavour, and can intensify the dark oak and cherries of an aged / dark rum.

With the grapefruit notes you'll probably find they work well against a gin recipe like a Tom Collinsport (a Fiendish Tom Collins).

Fiendish Tom Collins/Tom Collinsport:

¾ oz. Lemon Juice

1 oz. Rock Candy Syrup

2 oz. Plymouth Gin

1 dropper Horror Infused Fiendishly Tropical Bitters

Shake, add 1oz seltzer, strain into Collins glass with fresh ice. Garnish with large lemon peel

An Anachronistic Bijou
* 1 1/2 ounces dry gin
* 1/2 ounce vermouth
* 1/2 ounce Chartreuse [4]
* half-dropper of Horror Infused Fiendishly Tropical Bitters
Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and fill with cracked ice. Stir well for 20 seconds and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Twist a piece of lemon peel over the drink and use as garnish.

[1] We like our Rhum Old-Fashions the old fashioned way...with BOOZE in 'em.

[2] From Wikipedia - By 1806, American publications referenced the popularity of a new preparation termed cocktail, which was described as a combination of “a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters." - That's right kiddies....if it don't got bitters in it, it ain't a cocktail. ^/|\^

[3] From Bittercube.com - Bittercube Bitters utilize spirits from Yahara Bay Distillers. The bitters are created by hand, peeling hundreds of pounds of citrus, weighing dozens of spices, and decorticating vanilla beans, among other time consuming tasks! Bittercube Bitters do not use any extracts or oils, but only “raw” ingredients.

[4] I'm told this is another way to use up those dregs of vermouth and Chartreues you may have laying around.

We just had a great time at ConCarolinas in Charlotte, NC! The guest of honor was George R.R. Martin, and the place was packed. I want to get back in the habit of doing these recaps every time.

Top 5 experiences:

I was a guest on "Seriously, Dan," a live broad-cast every Sat. from 6pm to 8pm, WYXC 1270 out of Cartersville, GA. I was honored to be included by show host Dan Carroll (who you might also know from his role as Director of Media Relations for DragonCon, Monsterama, and various and sundry similar products). He's a nice, funny, and soothing personality, and I had a great time on the show. Also, turns out my "radio announcer voice" works well on actual radio (or at least was good for a laugh). I also got to meet and interact with Scott and Ruth Suehle and some other lovely folks

.

Thanks to the MandalorianMercs and my booth-minion Jamie, I got to "anguish in a Mandalorian prison cell. For 20 minutes. For charity. Also, I practiced showtunes while doing so. "Sinnnngggiinn' in tha' caaaage....just Siiiiinnnnggggin' in tha' CAAAGGGEEE! What a gloooorrrious feeeeling!" Etcetera. Ad Nauseum.

Played a new game called "Tonto Cuore". If there ISN'T a version with naughty cards, there SHOULD be. (It's about owning a household of maids, and you score points for the ones you send to your chambers...sort of). Fun game though.

I'm gonna go with meeting Neon Pink Jesus! He even blessed our booth for the second year in a row. (I'm told this year he had much better nipple-guards). If you are interested in the Gospel According to Booze, Bullets, and Hot Pink Jesus, go here; Http://www.hotpinkjesus.com (It's a movie).

The final highlight was vending with our friends who came to help staff the booth, and introducing many people to the joy of a Dark N Stormy made with Blenheim Extra Hot Ginger Ale and Horror Infused Fiendishly Tropical Bitters.

As a vendor: Load in and out was super smooth...volunteers were on hand to help load in an out. Load in 10am morning of (for a 3pm opening) was a little more frenetic than loading in the day before, but not terrible. Smartphone/wifi signal was strong with no hiccups. Donated to the charity auction.

More pictures from the trip here: https://plus.google.com/photos/104119888491198424312/albums/6020507144256513905

Also; if any one in the 501st Carolina Garrison know these two Mercs, I'd love to meet 'em when they aren't handcuffing me and throwing me in a cell. :)

TL/DR ConCarolinas was fun!

I'm a bit late to a party I'm really thrilled to discover - February is Women In Horror Recognition Month! As the father of a daughter, I'd like to thank every female creative everywhere working in the horror genre in some way. From historical writers like Mary Shelly ("Frankenstein") to modern directors like Mary Harron ("American Psycho"), women already play an active and vibrant role in horror fiction and art; this month is one chance to help recognize those contributions a little more formally, and that is awesome!

To all the female writers, artists, sculptors, podcasters, actresses and others who choose to push the boundaries and explore humanity through horror, and incidentally teach my daughter that she can do whatever she wants even if it involves "gross stuff": thank you.

There are many ways to support artists and creators; usually time and treasure goes the furthest. Just to spread the love a little further, here are some very worthwhile woman-produced horror projects being funded that I personally couldn't resist.

Corner-booth Blog #8 - Reviews from the 2013 Monster Serial event

My first fandom is horror literature. I love tiki, art history, sci-fi, fantasy, movies, graphic design, and just about all other flights of fancy, but the place I started, if I really trace it back, is horror fiction.

At Christmas one year I got a large leatherbound book of Robert Louis Stevenson stories and an unabridged collection of Edger Allen Poe stories. Between "Treasure Island", the "Strange Case of Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde," "Pit and the Pendulum," and "The Black Cat" I fell in love with the outre and the macabre.[1]

Thousands of books and a word processor later I spent most of high school writing/journaling/reviewing and editing things. Word processing led to desktop publishing and Bob's-your-uncle; I'm a working artist and graphic designer.

All that was a VERY long way around to saying that I was recently asked to participate in the October 2013 Monster Serial project over at The Collinsport Historical Society. The website is a well-curated, authoritative look at the multiple "Dark Shadows" tv series and movies. (I've said before that "Dark Shadows" is a lot like the "Dr. Who" of horror.) During the '90s revival tv series I used to join up with some other friends of mine [2] and watch the show every week.

Monster Serials was a commitment by several authors to write a movie review a day during October, culminating in multiple reviews from the "Halloween" line of films on All Hallow's Eve. I'd like to thank Wallace for inviting me to participate, and share my contributions to the project here. Without further ado; here are my contributions. Hope you enjoy.

For those interested, here is my two-bit summary of the Halloween franchise.

1. Innovative Original

2. The Next Day

3. Capitalize on the name with unrelated property

4-5-6. Create a TRILOGY instead of 4. to explain backstory and move the story forward

[extra interesting in my opinion because they A) do some gymnastics to work the unrelated 3rd movie into the cosmology and B) the try to end the series for the first time (producers cut) then decide to release a different ending (theatrical cut) allowing for...]

7. The "Where are they now" sequel that was originally written to pick up where 6 left off but was then REWRITTEN to pick up where II left off and ignore 4-5-6.7. also has a conclusive end

...until 8. decides to resurrect the franchise again, this time with video cameras ala SAW.

Thanks for reading these thoughts from the Corner-booth at Pickman's Cove!

•"I watched him for fifteen years, sitting in a room, staring at a wall, not seeing the wall, looking past the wall - looking at this night, inhumanly patient, waiting for some secret, silent alarm to trigger him off."

[1] You see what happens, Donny? This is what happens when you give a little kid antique literature.

[2] One of my old friends, Tim, does sardonic live-texts of movies he watches under the heading #TerribleTheater (Indexed here)

He wrote one for "In The Mouth of Madness". It was so funny I almost couldn't write my own review. Enjoy.

You've just been made an expert in something and now people are inviting you to talk to other people at conventions. What do you do? Grab a mug of your favorite beverage and read on.

Disclaimer - these are just some notes from my own perspective and experience, by no means exhaustive or complete. Hopefully useful and cogent, but I'm not promising anything. This is the exact opposite of an expert opinion.

Really basic 101 type stuff

When you go to Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Pop Culture conventions etc there are usually panels you can sit in to learn more about your favorite topics. I've had the good fortune to be on a few panels* (usually in a crowd of other folks, usually related to Lovecraft/Cthulhu, fundraising, marketing, or prop-making).

Panels are fun, but they can be stressful for panelists, and the stress can come from some strange directions. I wanted to run down some of the more common thoughts and observations I've had, on the off chance they are useful to someone about to be on their first convention panel.

So you're going to be on a panel…GREAT! They are fun! REMEMBER THAT! In any setting you can enjoy the atmosphere or you can BE part of the atmosphere. If you've been asked to be on a panel (or Q&A session, or to speak) it means, first and foremost, the panel organizer (track director or whoever) trusts you to contribute positively to the panel/track/convention.
Don't let the organizer down. Here's a handy dandy sub-list that will help you out.

WAY BEFORE THE SHOW

When you are asked to be on the panel, nail down some specifics if they exist. What tone does the organizer want the panel to have (if any).

Who will you be on the panel with? (You can and probably should look up your fellow panelists. This may induce nervousness or an inferiority complex, it may not. Try not to worry about it if it does…see #2 above). ALSO; remember, you have to speak too! I confess I have gotten too wrapped up and interested in what a co-panelist was saying and missed making a point I intended to add.

Who is the audience? Speak to their interests and with language at their level.

What does the organizer need/expect from you? Do you need to prepare a bio? How long? Can you/should you promote the panel on your social media sites (hint: almost always yes)?

Do you intend to have any advertising collateral to leave in the room (perhaps by a water cooler or table outside?) Is that cool?

Is it cool to have any book/movie/art example etc. that you are currently promoting discretely on the table with you? (Want to feel dumb? Leave yours at home and have everyone else lay their stuff on the table. I will always carry a Horror In Clay Cthulhu tiki mug with me from now on, just in case).

Google the subject of your panel, unless you are an absolute expert on it, and take a few notes, or print out some notes. It does make one seem a bit more authoritative and helps refresh knowledge.

BEFORE THE PANEL

Dress in a manner that feels most comfortable to you and helps bring out the you-ness to the surface. You will present more comfortably if you are comfortable. I can't make up my mind if showing up in a "Cthulhu Waits Drinking" shirt makes me the guy in the band wearing the band's shirt or not…so I err on the side of marketing and do it anyway. Plus it's comfy.

Every day at the event, check in with the schedule/organizer and make sure the panel is still at the same time and location you expect it to be.

Have a friend in the audience with a decent camera who can take a few photos. (You might ask if video is ok, and if so have someone video the panel for you**).

Eat something. I don't mean a turkey dinner, nachos with all the trimmings, and 16 glasses of beer, but don't be preoccupied with being hungry (or with being full).

Bring a pad of paper and a pen. Things will occur to you during the panel - it is helpful to be able to jot them down. Also to take notes, or questions you want to answer more fully online later.

RIGHT BEFORE THE PANEL

Show up early.

Locate the nearest bathroom and use it once or twice before.

Don't be nervous.

Turn off your cell!

Try and meet the moderator before hand.

Make sure you have water.

Get your fooling with the mic finished early. A non-adjustable table mic stand puts the mic at about a foot off the table. I'm a tall man with a large belly, so leaning forward to speak into the mic on table makes me feel self conscious, breaks my eye contact with the audience, and compresses my larynx…you may not need to do anything special to talk into a mic, but if you do, think about it in advance. Will you hold it? Be aware your arm may get tired. You may want to raise the mic stand/put it up on a stack of books (if so, bring a plain solid block or something).

I personally recommend trying to at least exchange words with the other panelists beforehand, but that may or may not happen.

DURING THE PANEL

HAVE FUN!

I've noticed there is a fair amount of "who's turn is it to speak" glancing around when in the front of the room. Sometimes there is a natural order to questions (everyone takes a turn answering) and sometimes there is a moderator handing cues. Try and look for the cues that it is "your turn" to speak, but be aware it is ok to follow up/interject where appropriate - just ALWAYS be respectful of your fellow panelists.

Some people are more comfortable and experienced than others - if that's you, try and engage your fellow panelists a bit - in my experience the BEST panels get a little crosstalk going.

First and foremost a panel should be informative for the audience and interactive with them; that can be a little easier to achieve if the panelists have already set a conversational tone. NEVER devolve to having a conversation at the front of the room that the audience isn't involved in; you'll lose them really fast that way.

Don't shout into the mic. Don't swallow it. Certainly don't leap on the table and swing it around by the cord (unless it is a panel on 80's glam metal…then swing away).

Try not to obsess over how you did. Like any stage performance, you probably are far more critical of yourself than you should be. Also, recordings will make you look and sound horrible to yourself. If you have one take note of how more experienced panel members fielded questions and segued between the question asked and the one they wanted to answer (pretty common I've noticed). If you don't have an answer you can just say that, or you can do the best you can and skew discussion in a direction you know.

Pro Tip - if you have a bonafide authority on the panel and can't recall specifics when asked a question, you can sometimes Tai Chi the situation. Once upon a time (last week) I was on a panel entitled "Cthulhu 101" with Kenneth Hite…who WROTE "Cthulhu 101". When a fellow panelist was asked something about depictions of Cthulhu he started his answer with, "Ken can probably fill in some more detail, but from what I recall, Lovecraft actually DREW Cthulhu in a letter". He then proceeded to talk about his inspirations and interpretations. That was a pretty good answer, and created more of a dialogue, because when he finished talking Ken filled in some more detail.

AFTER THE SHOW

Be available if possible. You want to interact with any audience members.

who want to interact with you, if you have the time. Some people are more available than others. At minimum thank the organizer on the way out, and be aware people might take it ill if you immediately bolt.

About a week after the panel follow up with the organizer and say something like "Hi! Had a great time on the panel.Wanted to followup....was there any feedback (from you or the audience) relevant to the panel in general or my participation in particular that could help me become a better presenter/panel guest?"

So those are some of my thoughts after presenting twice on Cthulhu-related panels this year. It was fun, it was slightly terrifying, it was great exposure, and I've made some great friends. I've had folks from the audience who were backers of the original Kickstarter come up and say hi! HOW COOL!

(As a note, there are some best practices for audiences, the top 3 of which for me are: Be respectful, don't try to lead the discussion from the audience/nitpick excessively, and leave feedback for the organizer).

Party Like a Cephalopod!

"Beware the Alumni, for they have squids in their heads" is a phrase you'll hear if you hang around me long enough. (I'll explain some other time). Well, the squid in the head of my friend Mr. Kleef is fond of math. And rum. And he wanted to throw a party for all his friends who bought the Horror In Clay. Logistically, there were a few things to consider:

How to scale the recipe for the signature cocktail up to monster-sized?

How to tell one mug from another?

We decided to share a little of the legwork he did to make a wonderful Lovecraftian Luau come to hideous undying life.

How to make 5 gallons of Cthulhu Waits Dreaming

SCIENCE!

You'll Need:

Gold Rum 160oz

Dark Rum 20oz

Brandy 40oz

Absinthe 1.67oz <OR> 10 tsp

Cinnamon Syrup 40oz

Orgeat Syrup 40oz

White Grapefruit Juice 140oz

Fresh lemon juice 60oz

Bitters 8.34oz

Oh so many bitters.

Also poured in maybe 1/3 of a 20lb bag of ice.

The Shopping List

3 x 1.75L bottle Appleton Jamaica Rum [Special]

1 x 1.75L bottle Coruba Dark Rum (sub Meyers)

1 x 1.75L bottle Paul Masson Grande Amber (sub whatever)

1 x 0.75L bottle Absinthe

2 x 0.75L bottle Collins Orgeat Syrup

3 half-gallon White Grapefruit bottles

1 x 10 Oz bottle Angostura Bitters

3 of the 2-cup cinn. syrup mix (handmade at 1c sugar, 1c water, 3 sticks)

Juice of 40 lemons (at 1.5 oz per lemon <OR> 60 oz fresh squeezed = buy 4 pints)

You will need to juice more than twice this many lemons. You will feel every nick, cut, scrape, and tear on your hands.

Don't forget the salt-water rinse!

A few tea spoons of sea salt in a casserole dish full of water to brine/rinse your mug in first (just ladle in some salt water, rinse, and pour out.)

So. You have all the social lubricant anyone could ask for. You have a bunch of like minded tiki freaks, horror fans, and freaky freaks all hanging out. Everyone brought their mug. All the mugs are the same. How to tell them apart?

You could glue googly eyes on them like this fellow:

Which I don't recommend.

Or you could order a bunch of rubber bands designed to tell beer bottles apart (or LiveStrong bracelets, or whatever) and sharpies. This is a pretty entertaining option, and worked well. I recommend it anywhere you go where you need a nametag for your tiki mug.

Whatever you do, have fun! More on decorating your Cthulhu fete later. If you have your own events around our products, I'd LOVE to hear about them and see pictures! 'Til then, enjoy your Horror In Clay gear!

An extra special thanks to Mr. Kleef and Lucky for hosting this awesome event! Thanks guys! All the best.

Corner-booth Blog #3 - Fist full of swizzles and a Tropical Drink Primer.

I recently had the pleasure of introducing one of our customers, a lifetime horror fan, to tropical mixed drinks. He wanted to know where to start.

This was my advice, presented here with footnotes:

The first Beachbum Berry book (the Grog Log) is what got me started on historic mixology, because we wanted tropical drinks for our wedding. It is a fun damn hobby. We often have a buncha folks bring parts of a new or favorite recipe and have an evening of it (like having folks over for original Pat O'Brian recipe Hurricanes for Fat Tuesday *1).

So, first thing if you want to get into accurate tiki drinks for your mug,

go buy The Grog Log Remixed.

Berry researches his recipes and can be considered a definitive

authority on the "right" way to make these drinks.

Stocking your first tiki bar? Here is a great resource for a traveling or initial "basic" bar to have on hand if you want to min/max your drink options by Tim "Swanky" Glasner Traveling Tiki Bar Needs

Here are some quick guidelines to 100% improve your cocktails:

1. Use fresh lemon and lime juice. Get a hand juice squeezer. (for OJ something like Simply Orange Juice is ok…any high end good juice will do.)

2. Measure correct amounts if you want the accurate taste. Don't free pour.

3. Learn a bit about rum, and realize that, if a recipe calls for a Martinique gold rum, it will taste different if you use a Puerto Rican gold rum. (Probably not bad, but not as originally developed).

If you change an ingredients you should change the name of the cocktail, and that is a good thing.

Remixed will have a good primer for rums. If you want to go down the

rabbit hole on rums check out Ed Hamilton's Ministry of Rum *4 and Paul Senft's Rum Journey.

Off hand, I'd make sure you have: Puerto Rican white (Bacardi *5), Jamaican dark (Meyers or my fav, Coruba), a nice gold (some variety of Appleton's always works for me), a demerara (a very molasses-tasting dark rum), and Lemon Hart 151 (a dark overproof) *6. Also; you can spice your own rum; it is fairly simple and fun and I prefer it to any prepackaged spiced rum.

4. Realize these drinks are about mixing and balancing and tasting the

flavours of the rums; some of them are pretty damn heavy

handed/strong. Just be aware. (Note, you can ruin yourself for

"normal" tropical drinks you get at bars...they start to taste like weak

chemical garbage).

5. Learn your syrups, and love to make them *7. Rose's grenadine is

pathetic; once you have real homemade grenadine I will be amazed if

you can go back.

6. Have a simpler drink to sip on while mixing your complicated concoctions. Dark and Stormies are delicious, as are Cuba Libres (a proper rum and coke). The way I make either: get either a real coke (mexican coke with sugar and no high fructose corn syrup) or a nice strong ginger beer (not ginger ale)*8 and add 2 shots of dark rum and the juice of half a lime. (I like to add a splash of bitters, because it ain't a cocktail without bitters.) Make it over crushed ice.... put rum in glass, then ice, then pour in the soda to keep the most fizz. Delicious!

*1 Hurricane recipe: (1 part lemon juice, 1 part passion fruit syrup, 2 parts dark Jamaican rum).

*2 Passion fruit syrup (see below)

*3 The brand of passion fruit pulp I like: CANOA' Maracuya Passion Fruit puree/pulp

*4 Also kiss his boots for getting Lemon Hart 151 into wide circulation again!

*5 In general, Bacardi is popular because it has a fairly neutral flavor (meaning it hides in drinks) and because they spent a lot of money hosting cocktail contests back in the day. Doesn't mean they are the best.

*6 Can you tell I love dark rum?

*7 A few words about syrups (see below)

*8 I love Blenheim's Old #3 Hot.

A FEW WORDS (681) ABOUT SYRUPS:

please note: I researched these off

the internet when I got into cocktails years ago; my tweaks and

commentary are rife below but I don't claim original authorship.

GRENADINE

If you think Rose’s makes grenadine, you’ve been lied to (my opinion only).

I also wanted to wax evangelical about falernum if you haven't tried it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falernum

http://www.artofdrink.com/2008/08/falernum.php

http://thecocktailcircuit.blogspot.com/2006/06/barbados-in-bottle.html

I strongly recommend making yourself a batch for fun at least. Nothing else really tastes like it. And then invite me over to help you try it out, of course. (Note; can be alcoholic or not).

I always use Paul Clarke's Falernum #8 Recipe. It produces a very limy falernum. While Beachbum

recommends the milder Fee Brothers (which can be bought at some liquor store and on the internet) I don't really like it, preferring the stronger, more gingery taste of the above.

Buying list for Falrenum #8

From Liquor store

6 ounces Wray & Nephew Overproof White Rum

gold Puerto Rican rum (Bacardi gold?)

From Grocery Store

almond extract

From Trader Joe's (or a grocery store)

100% white grapefruit juice / white grapefruits to squeeze

From somewhere

eyedropper

cheesecloth

Microplane grater

Here's the instructions again. Paul Clarke's Falernum #8 Recipe.

Some non-tropical falernum drinks to try (you should be able to google

these up; I don't remember where I found them and don't want to

irritate anyone)

"Cognac Misty", Albert Carillo (1965)

"Frosty Dawn", Albert Carillo (1954)

"Golden Wave", Jose C. Yalco (1969)

"Cogna Perino", Anthony Cordero (1973)

"Prestige Cocktail" Dale DeGroff

"Corn n Oil"

CINNAMON-INFUSED SIMPLE SYRUP

Crush 3 cinnamon sticks, place in saucepan with 1cup water and 1 cup sugar.

Bring to boil and stir until sugar dissolves.

Lower heat, cover the saucepan, and simmer for 2 minutes.

Remove from heat and, keeping covered, let sit for 2 hours before

straining and bottling.

PASSIONFRUIT SYRUP

Make by bringing 1 part water to roiling boil and mixing that with 2 parts sugar until the sugar is dissolved, and mixing THAT 1:1 with passionfruit pulp. I use CANOA' Maracuya Passion Fruit puree/pulp -

you can get it at mexican groceries/farmers market.

Corner-booth Blog #2 - Anachrocon 2013 Recap & Lovecraft Vs. Cthulhu panel

Anachrocon 2013 was only our second time out vending as Horror In Clay. Most of our "booth" is repurposed gear from our basement tike bar. Our adventure began loading up the minivan to the roof with mugs, shirts, jiggers, stickers, and fezzes (for this con we were an official reseller for Fez-O-Rama fezzes. Made in America, by folks who know fine haberdashery. www.fezorama.com).

Load in and setup in went smoothly Thursday night, aided by our friends and minions (frinions?) Lucky and Tang. Thanks guys! Those lovely stalwarts also opened the booth for us and vended on Friday. (Tang even did some tweeting and facebooking about the experience). Saturday and Sunday Allison and I lived at Anachrocon, which was much fun. We were bracketed by the lovely people at Wolfhome Constuming (great gear for sale, and man can one of those ladies BAKE) and by Aardvark Tees (they have some really funny shirts, my fav being a Dr. Who shirt inspired by the episode "Don't Blink"). We were also over by the bathroom ("take a right by Cthulhu" to go to the loo).

Horror In Clay was proud to sponsor the Classic Horror Track. Highlights from the vending room include being accosted by a guy in a Cthulhu mask made of balloons, lots of gorgeous steampunk attire, weaving things out of Twizzlers (tentacles) and of course talking about and selling our Horror In Clay wares. Much fun was had by all, and we look forward to doing it again next year.

I was invited to speak on a panel called Lovecraft vs. Cthulhu by Horror Track director Derek Tatum. The panelists included

James R. Tuck (writer), Eddie Coulter (writer), Mark Helwig (artist), and of course myself Jonathan Chaffin (artist).

The moderator was Clay Gilbert (writer).

Here is an expansion of some notes I scribbled on a scrap of cardboard taken from a box of swizzles during the panel.

The panel focused on differences between HPL and his followers both contemporary (like Robert E Howard and August Derleth) and modern (like Stephen King, Brian Lumley, Robert Bloch to name but a few of the horde), on differences between HPLs Mythos and non-mythos work, and on Cthulhlu's emergence as a pop culture icon and HPLs probable feelings on that (we suspected bafflement mixed with irritation.) It's hard for me personally to imagine Howard and his long gaunt New England chin being thrilled about the idea.

A few differences between HPL and his followers:

1. HPL had no HOP....E. The earth was insignificant, people were insignificant, once you opened the door your mind/body was forfeit and what ever was on the other side probably wouldn't notice, much less care. Later writers set up balances and opposing forces that could provide some hope of making it through.

2. There were still external terrestrial frontiers being achieved regularly. Hilary, the Antarctic, etc; latter-day writers were necessarily changed by the effects of world war, space exploration, etc.

3. Once the door was opened in an HPL story, you were screwed. There are maybe three stories where the main character makes it out alive and sane. Later authors are much more likely to let their survivors out.

4. Women. HPL didn't write them, and rarely did they make an appearance (of course, he was raised sorta like Norman Bates, so what

would you expect).

5. Humor or eroticism, actually present in other writers...I've yet to find an HPL counter example, although I haven't dug into that topic much yet.

A few differences between HPL's Mythos and non-mythos work:

Non-mythos = paranoid/cynical attitude about humanity

Cthulhu mythos = qualities of general Lovecraft fiction with a darkly cosmic focus and a sense of the universe as disinterested in humanity/hostile to humanity. HPL gets rather gets swallowed up in the Mythos because the Mythos is an easy thing for people to glom onto--i.e. cosmic monsters.

Other topics of interest:

Cthulhu, Dagon, Deep Ones might be so widely discussed/depicted in art (a contributing factor to their popularity) because they are concrete, more like kaiju, and easier to conceive (and pronounce).

Chaosium RPG supplements helped seed the mythos far and wide by functioning as "What if" scenarios that got a lot of exposure.

Non-Lovecraft Lovecraftian Horrors:

In the Mouth of Madness

John Carpenter's The Thing

Inhumanoids (Didn't mention this on the panel, but I wanted to, the monster Tendril is where I trace a lot of my personal affinity for both Cthulhu and Godzilla)

Homework list (for me personally, but feel free to play along at home…love to hear your thoughts):

Movie "Late Bloomer" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh-Ur4WMWEs

If any of my fellow panelists or audience members want to add other stuff we talked about, I'd love to get it down. Next time; video camera.

SEO and vanity tells me I need a blog to help support the doings of www.HorrorInClay.com so here it is; my random ramblings, appearance info, and opinions from my little corner of my own little imaginary tiki bar and virtual store.

I. The Manifesto

By now everyone knows we sell a Cthulhu inspired tiki mug. Yay! The world just got more awesome! (At least we think so)

We have a little more going on that that, and still more in the pipeline, so here's our manifesto.

We at Horror In Clay want the world to be a more magical place, and have more of the stuff we create and that we find inspirational from around us. We want want to sell high quality, conceptually appropriate products. We want to help people do cool things to promote more inspiring products in the world.

I'd much rather have something crafted from one of our concepts than just slap a logo on something (although if it's really cool we might do a little of that). This is our labour of love, so sometimes it might take a little while to get things shipped out, but I promise to try and get everything handled in a timely fashion, as defined by me.

II. Some Cool Stuff We Will Be Attending

Horror In Clay is sponsoring the inaugural Classic Horror track at http://www.Anachrocon.com Feb. 22-24, In Atlanta, GA. Anachrocon is an alternative history convention (think steampunk or weird west genres) and is a lot of fun. We will have a booth in the dealer's room and also will be giving out tchotchkes and speaking on a panel.

We will be vending at http://www.ConCarolinas.org in Charlotte, NC, from May 31-June 2, 2013. ConCarolinas is a general multi-genre multi-media convention. They call themselves a sci-fi convention but in truth cover all speculative fiction - science fiction, fantasy and horror. It hosts a variety of fandom related events and guests, including gaming, discussion panels, costume events, music events like Klingon Karaoke, charity auction, SCA events, fan groups like the 501st Stormtroopers, Starfleet, and Klingon Assault Group, and something different every year.

We would love to see you at these events. Please stop by our booth if you are at the con and say hi!

III. More Awesome

For years I have been a fan of the minty fresh skypieces produced by Fez-O-Rama. Starting at Anachrocon, Horror In Clay will be an official Fez-O-Rama reseller and will have a limited selection of Fez-O-Rama fezzes for sale (mostly those with tentacles). We cannot wait to share these and send more fezzes into the wild.

That's enough for now. Your host, JMC

-- "The box. You opened it. We came."
