Horse Stories From the Heart

Horses, Equine

If you would like to meet an old hand with horses, you have come to the right place. My experience of forty plus years speaks for itself. I have a Certificate from our Local Extention Office from OSU for my 11 years of being a 4-H Advisor in Marion County. My 4-H kids were one of the first Horseless Horse Kids. (The kids that wanted to show horses but did not have one). Sometimes, they would showed my horses. I am also a CHA Certified Horsemanship Instructor and Lifetime member. In the beginning it was not like that at all. I was always backwards and embarrassed.

I taught myself everything about horses with help by observing others, lots of reading, and practicing.

My first horse was Flicka, she was a medium sized Quarter pony about 12 hands, she was a beautiful bay. Flicka was 1 1/2 yrs old, and not broke, she was the first horse that I broke and trained by myself. I was only 13 years old, when I bought her for myself. With my bicycle money. Look for some of those stories to come.

My parents had never owned a horse before and knew nothing about them. I learnt to ride the hard way, by falling off and getting right back on. I was a very stubborn young lady that never liked to give up, I still do not give up very easliy. I hit the ground more times than I care to remember. I still have A LOT OF BATTLE WOUNDS from all my wonderful experiences. Take it from an old pro the older you get the more painful those battle scars become. You really do not want to be as stubborn as I.

I started this Blog because, I never want any kids to learn like I did, by themselfs the hard way. It wasn't really my parents fault they didn't know anything about horses. I was a very good kid that paid for my own first pony. My parents just wanted me to be happy, just like any good parent.

Since then, I have bought, sold, boarded, traded, bred, raised, and trained Horses. I love to try to help horse lovers with their horses, especially you kids. If you have any problems, questions, concerns or just want to chat about horses. This is the place for you, you do not have to own a horse just be A TRUE HORSE LOVER.

The horse in the photo with me is: Miss Lady Starlight

Star was one of my first horses. My mamma bought her for me for $50.00 when she was 22 months old. I broke and trained her, too. She died in 2001, at the nice old age of 27 and 3/4. I had her for about 26 years. She was gray with a Star, Snip, and Stripe, but you can't tell that from this picture of her. She changed colors every year and people always thought I had bought a new horse. It was great.

I am practically a professional when it comes to gray horses. I been raising them for 35 years. In fact almost all of my foals have been gray.

I never won in a hole lot of big horse shows, I did do pretty good in a few. I never really cared to get into the show circut much. I especially like to go trail riding. If you would like to make any comments or have any questions. Give me a holler

Surprised Me

I have not been here enough this year. For some odd reason, my horse got dropped off on my door step in the middle of town. That was a shock for all of us at our house, it's a good thing I still had horse fence and gates around, they came in handy.

My cousins husband is a little strange, to my face he acted like taking care of my mare was no problem. Then dumps her on my door step.

We were suppose to be able to ask for a permit to keep farm animals in our yard, in town, if we have enough room, which I do, so I ran up to the Health Department and put in my app. for a permit.

Low and behold of course they will not give out permits for that anymore. We can own property but CAN NOT have anything we want on it.

I explained to him that she (my last horse) got dumped in my yard. He so graciously gave me a whole week to get her out of my yard. I tried all week long diligently to find her a new place. At that time, there really was not many places around here that rent out stalls.

This horse was kinda a basket case when I first bought her. Her name was even Flippa. She spooked all the time, about anything, but she would spook in place. Thats why I bought her. We call her Flicka

She shocked me so much during that week, I was under the impression since I do not get to spend much time with her, that she was a little spooky. Boy has she fooled me, she is the perfect horse now. She was a lady all week long in my back yard.

Now for the rest of the story. Not even 5 days later, (remember the Health Dept. gave me a week, I thought that was 7 days ) I had the health dept., the cops, and the Humane Society at my door. I had just found her a place to live and had planned on moving her the next morn. My daughter the one leading the horse went out first to tell them that we had planned on moving her the next morn.

The Humane Society was threatening to take her and my daughter was throwing a major fit. I suppose that is why the police were there. As you can see there is nothing wrong with the mares health. I finally made it out calmed everyone down. Explained to them all, that I was planning on moving her the next day. They of course, said, (that if we did not get her out of there by then that they would have to help me get a place for her to stay and monitor her). We moved our mare the next day to a nice Amish mans house, Him and his kids take excellent care of her and lots of others along with their own.

That was what happened at the beginning of my summer. Since then I have had 2 more grandsons and another one on the way. Making my total of grandchildren 8 very soon. I have been very busy taking care of them this year. It is calming down now and Soon I hope to remember lots more horse stories from my past. So, keep checking back, and tell all of your horsey friends.

Hello !

How are all you horse lovers out there ? Spring is on its way, the trees are budding, the sun has been out and it's getting warmer day by day. I can hardly wait. What about you ? I been going stir crazy for the last month, I have cabin fever real bad. I want to go spend more time with my horse. She is so beautiful and has a great disposition. She is closer to my house now so it will make taking the grandchildren out to see her much easier. I moved her to my cousins house, they are taking excellent care of her. I am so thankful for them. Thank You, so much, Tami and Fred.

GO FIGURE

2011-11-19T11:35:00.001-08:00

Hi everyone! I still do not get on here much these days. With 6 grand children and a new job I am pretty busy. I do not have my own Internet connection and driving around using others is a pain in the neck. Its does bother me that I can not get on here as much.

I had my horses in the city right beside the public fairgrounds. When I bought the house I called the city council, the fairgrounds, and the City Police Dept. They all said it was fine they had no laws or what ever against it, just keep the manure cleaned up which was not a problem.

I get my horses all moved into there new home. The my mare and her colt passed away as I wrote in my last blog. Just when I thought everything was gonna be great by having my horses in the back yard.

Go figure, the city council decides to put restrictions on the farm and other animals in the city. We fought and begged them for awhile so they decided to let us have them as long as we filed for a permit every year. They made a bunch of new rules that you have to follow, etc..
I was planning on moving my horse to where she could have lots of pasture however, I did not file for my permit, a couple months later they sent me a letter saying, They gave me 10 days to move my horse. My boyfriend and I was having some trouble because he has a farm with pasture but I could not move my horse there because I had no job. That is one of the reasons I started working, but I was a little mad at him so I hadn't moved my horse yet. I got a job shortly thereafter. Then the city health dept. guy starts sending the humane society to my house. Well I will be damned if they take her, so I tried to find another place for her. I could not find one.
I finally had to brake down call one of my xxx boyfriends to see if he'd take her for me, well he did, Thank God. I did not want to tell them where she was at, I really did not think it was any of their business, after all the issue was over me having to move my mare.

I would not tell them where she was, They issued a warrant for my arrest. I had to get a lawyer which did not really do anything but keep me out of jail, which I do appreciate. I just had to tell them where she was stabled, so they could check to see if she was there.

The City Health Dept. had been to my house several times to see if she was there, but they could not come back to see if she was not there. They are not issuing anymore permits after next year. There you have it The fine politics of the city at work wasting tax payers money.

Apologies

2011-03-09T01:15:00.000-08:00

I want to give my sincerest apologies for the last year. I really wanted to blog all the time when my foals started coming. After, I had helped Blair's Riding Stable pick out the horses they were going to use on the post for the riders, helped fix the electric fence, help feed once in a while, watered all the horses when needed, etc.. Soon after my foals were on the ground the stable owner kicked me out for hosing down my horse Velvet in the wrong area. Shortly after I got my horses moved to my house my mare Velvet passed away, about a week later her foal Pistol passed away, also. Needless to say I had a bad year 2 yrs. in a row. Velvet had been born and raised on my farm. She was about 16 yrs. old and we had just gotten her back. She developed pneumonia while at Blair's Riding Stables, the short 2 weeks, that I did not go out, to visit her, no one had bothered to tell me she was coughing or acting abnormal. Needless to say I was devastated, very depressed and terribly disappointed.

I had to sell Peppers foal because I could not keep all of them in my back yard, I live in town. I do have a couple of pictures of him when he was about 3 months old. I will post them. I think I will have a memorial tribute for Velvet and Pistol.

Colts and Fillies

2010-04-12T01:39:00.001-07:00

We been so busy taking care of new foals being born at our barn, I haven’t had much time to write. It started about 2 weeks ago when the first colt hit the ground. We were not expecting him quit so soon. I got a frantic call telling me that my horse had a foal, they thought it was not going to live, the mother had no milk and the baby would not stand on its own.

Shortly after, that call, I got another frantic call from my friend, turns out it was not my mare, it was hers. She is a truck driver and she was on the road in PA. We live in Ohio. Her kids were going out to see what they could do, I was thirty minutes away. She ask me to go see what was going on and buy some replacement milk for the baby.

On my way I made a few phone calls to see what all could be done. Thank God, I had never had these problems before. I talked to two vets each said they did not make supplement milk for horse foals and cows replacement milk would not work. I called my friends the first one said, the same thing and gave me some good advise on bringing in the mares milk, etc. I thought about another friend of minep that had raised a set of twin foals, I remembered how she said she supplemented her foals with milk because her mare did not produce enough milk. She said yes they do make mares replacement milk to call OSU Vet Hospital. In the mean time I could replace it with Lambs replacement milk.

So I frantically ran through out TSC looking for iodine, some kind of replacement milk, a tetinus shot, heat lamp cause it was cold out, etc.

Finally I arrived at the barn where we board. The kids had given the baby some powdered milk and had the foal up trying to nurse. The mare did have milk. THANK GOD

The Race

2010-01-27T21:10:00.001-08:00

Flicka turned out to be a very good pony. I kept her at a local stable. It was probably about 3 miles to my house. I use to ride her to town quite often. I would ride her into my house just to spend time with her and do something different. When I rode her to town lots of younger children would stop me, to pet and ride the pony. I really enjoyed sharing her with everyone, she was such a good little pony. I always let them pet her. I was afraid to let them ride, I did not want any little ones to get hurt.

There is one particular day I remember the most. I had taken Flicka to Nancy's house a few blocks away from my house. On my way home one of the boys I went to school with rode up on his new bicycle.

All you girls know what happened next. Yes, he started, Bragging about his new bicycle ," my new bike is faster than your pony, I'll race you". I knew my pony was faster than his bike but he kept at me. "come on race me" "chicken". Come on race me". Well being the competitive, daredevil young lady I am I jumped right on it.

We went running down the street as fast as we could go. This is the part where you need to pay close attention.

I was on the left, he was on the left, Paying attention ? Remember I was about 13 years old. Flicka is my first pony.

Flicka and I were running fast as we could down the middle of my street Then I seen my house, we got to the front of my house with Flicka in the lead, I turned Flicka towards my house, which was on the right. Flicka, poor baby, ran into his new bike, jumped up high in the air just (trying to miss that bicycle). Like a rodeo horse, kicked out at the bike, and went running into the back yard. I went flying over her shoulders rolled smack into the big walnut tree in front of my house.

Oh, my gosh my head hurt so bad I could barely get up. The neighbors went after Flicka, she was in the back yard, eating grass of course.

They carefully walked me over to set on my porch. Well Flicka was fine but Larry's bicycle well that was a different story. It was not even rideable. Flicka broke the spokes out, and bent the rim, lol. So much for that new bicycle.

Lesson for the day. Remember everyone, I was only about 13 years old, with little to no horse experience. As I set there in total disbelief and in shock. I finally figured out just what happened.

Guess What? *** Horses and ponies they turn much, much faster than bicycles.

These are my grand children I have three. This is my oldest one her name is Paige, she just turned 6 years old this year. Its her very first horse ride with me beside her.

This young man is my grandson Wyatt, he is 2 years old. He is my little horseman. I call him my little mister. Whenever he sees a horse no matter where it is he’s telling grandma “horse, horse, horse”. The first four pictures are over Christmas. In the lower one on Velvet he is about a year and a half old. The last one he was just seven months old on Shaggy.

This little lady is my youngest grand daughter her name is Miss AnnElise she turned one year old in July she's a little bit on the scared side, the real horses care her to death she screamed whenever we got close to one, my daughter and I was devestated, lol. She was even a little leary of stuffed ones they are now a blast. The first picture is at Christmas this year. She took a break from unwrapping presents just to ride the horse. God willing next year she will be ready for the real thing.

I was looking through the local area animal shelters. I was so sad when I found so many nice horses to adopt and of course lets not forget the dogs, cats and other critters. I am sure that all the poor abused, neglected, mistreated, unloved, animals would love to be adopted by a nice loving family.

I added a new horse to our Stable her name is Flip A Coin Silver Dollar she is a registered Tennessee Walker, her bloodlines are really great. Flicka as we call her because Flippa sounds kinda funny, is black with a star, strip, and Snip. She has a great walk, with an awsome back end. Shes been shown and I believe she was a stall baby. When, we put her out she was pretty flippy pardon the pun, lol, but she settled right down. She rides excellent.

With a name like that what do you think we should call her ?? Suggestions are Welcomed

Pony Tag

2009-09-23T23:58:00.000-07:00

My pony Flicka

I lived in town and had to stable my pony at a local farmers house. There was several kids with horses and ponies. There was the big front barn with about 5 stalls, a back barn with two pretty big stalls and a small orchard with a little shed.

There were plenty of us kids to go around, if you were there and did not have a pony we would fix you right up. I talked my mom and dad into buying a few more ponies, after I bought Flicka. That way I could sell them to my friends and family. We use to play pony tag. I don't know if it is a real game these days but it was a game all us kids made up. We had a blast chasing each other around and tagging each other on our ponies. Playing pony tag is probably how I learnt to stay on my wild little pony Flicka.

Flicka could turn on a dime, run like the wind and had super brakes. When I first started riding her I would fall off almost every time I stopped her. I never blamed her though because it was me that didn't know how to stop properly. I was and still am a very stubborn girl, I would get up and get right back on. I did not even know I was suppose to do that to keep Flicka from learning bad habits. I won all the races even with the big horses. If I knew then what I know now I could have made some money on that sweet little pony Flicka. I was too young my mom and dad never had horses. I had to teach myself everything.

Last week my daughter Katie and I went out to spend some time with our horses. We brushed down Pepper and Glory and took them for a ride. Unfortunately we forgot the camera. They both look so much better than they did when we got them. Its the first time I have really spent any time with them. Pepper, the little paint mare needs a lot of ground work. Shes a little skidish but really racks like a dream. Glory, is a very smooth ride also, she has a very good head shaking walk. She likes to go go go and does not stand very well. We will be working on that problem, too. We let Velvet Lace rest this time.

Run Away Mustang and The Great Day

2009-07-08T10:49:00.000-07:00

Yesterday was a great day. My daughter, her friend, and my grand babies and I went to see our horses. I have a couple pictures of my grandson riding our horse Stars Velvet Lace, we will call her Lacey for short, of course the cameras batteries went dead, so I only got a few pictures. It is my grandson Wyatt's second time on a horse.

We got to here some exciting true stories while we were there about their new horse Eli. A few days ago seems Eli decided to go on an adventures all on his own. Steven was riding him and started cantering something he has not done under saddle yet. Eli decided he wasn't too happy about it and threw Steven off. He took off and was running all over the place he got way to close to I 71 yes the interstate. My friend Cindy had to jump on my old faithful Lacey and go catch him. She got pretty close caught him but he twisted around and got loose. So some nice neighbor of hers went and got some grain they threw it on the ground and he then let them catch him.

Thank You Lord Jesus

Bummed

2009-07-06T12:53:00.000-07:00

Owning horses and not having your own place anymore is a bummer. I enjoyed having my own Stable very very much. It is so nice being able to go out your back door to see your horses. It is just like keeping a very large dog around. They follow you around and are very nosey. I have not been out to see my horses lately. I am kinda bummed about it. I do enjoy them so much. I will make it a top priority on my list of things to do.

Sharing horses and Experiences with you

2009-07-01T04:08:00.000-07:00

I bought one of Stars fillies back, her name is Stars Velvet Lace. She was, bred, born and trained on my farm. Yes, I done all of her training. I trained her very well according to the owner of the farm shes lived at for the last 10 years. She was one of their top riding horses, at Marmon Valley Farm, a Christian Riding Camp in Bellefountaine, Ohio. We had to sell her when she was about 4 years old. The same old problem all true horse lovers have, to many horses. She was born in 1993 and her sire is out of Merry Go Boy a foundation sire of the Tennessee Walking Horse. Her Dam was of course Miss Lady Starlight.

I am so happy to have her back, she is one of my horses first foals, Star. She was born on my birthday. What a wonderful birthday present that was from my old horse.

I also bought two other mares pictured above, they are both Tennessee Walkers। These pictures are from when we first brought them home। Pepper is the little Paint mare, she is 4 this year। Glory is the black mare, she is 13 years old। They are all very nice mares, and ride great
