In this interview Mr. Catanosa says paraphrasing, that he does not see anything wrong with this, it's tradition and nobody shown him any proof that the animal are hurt in any way.

I want to ask Mr. Catanos "What kind of proof does a person need to make them realize this is wrong? Just because some people see nothing wrong with it and would pay money to see it, doesn't make it OK to do this. It being a tradition is also not an excuse. It used to be a tradition to enslave people, should we bring that back too, because some people may not see anything wrong with it? The absence of proof that the animal is suffering is not proof that the animal is not suffering. A compassionate person would, in the absence of proof either way, be prudent and may I say enlightened, to assume the animal, with the ability to feel pain and emotional stress (and we do KNOW that sentient beings feel all that) but without the ability to speak is probably suffering in silence.

Sign petition to stop this cruel and unnecessary freak show from being reintroduced. This sort of exploitation of animals has to place in a compassionate society! I really doubt that most people really enjoy watching such a cruel show.

COMMENTARY: Taxpayers to pay for unpopular revival of horse slaughter

The reintroduction of horse slaughter plants in the United States comes with a hefty price tag, much of which goes to line the pockets of people in other countries who own these dens of incalculable abuse.

The way it works is that ever since 2005, there has been a section of the Agriculture appropriations bill that de-funds (to wit, bars the expenditure of taxpayers’ dollars on) a program for the USDA to inspect foreign-owned horse plants.

Now that the de-funding law has been deleted, supporters of the grisly, completely inhumane process of horse slaughter will go back to lobbying Congress for millions of dollars annually to run the inspection program.

Without inspection, it is illegal to transport horsemeat across state lines. Once they succeed, horse slaughter will resume here.

Let’s forget for the moment that candidate Barack Obama in 2008 pledged to keep the ban on horse slaughter permanent (another promise to voters reneged?)

Let’s forget, too, that American horses are not bred or raised for consumption.

Let’s forget that the few countries where horsemeat is consumed (France, Belgium and Japan among them) are ignoring the outright cruelty to horses that raises the hackles of right-thinking Americans.

The simple question is: Do we want our tax dollars spent to inspect horses that were slaughtered in incredibly cruel fashion (a bolt through the forehead that doesn’t kill them immediately) so foreign owners of slaughter plants can profit?

In the midst of a recession when other crucial programs such as Medicare and education are suffering deep cuts, the answer is a resounding, “no.”

Supporters of horse slaughter say the reintroduction of slaughter plants in the U.S. will create jobs.

An article in the Desert Independent in Blythe, Calif., this month noted, “Horse slaughter plants operating until 2007 … never created a total of more than 178 jobs.” The kind of jobs they do create are of dubious economic value to the individuals who take them and to the communities where slaughter plants are located.

Update November 18, 2011: Both the House of Representatives and the Senate have now approved the Conference Committee report on H.R. 2112, the bill that, in part, determines agriculture appropriations for FY 2012. President Barack Obama immediately signed the measure, making commercial horse slaughter legal once again in the U.S.

Conference Committee Chair Sen. Herb Kohl (D-WI), Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), and Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) voted to reject de-funding of inspections for equines for slaughter for human consumption. Only Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA) voted to support continued de-funding of the inspections.

Without de-funding or prohibition of the inspections, commercial horse slaughter for human consumption is legal in the U.S.

Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA) introduced the amendment to the House version of the bill that would have continued the de-funding of inspections for equines sent to slaughter for human consumption. Without the inspections which have been de-funded or prohibited since 2006, commercial horse slaughter has been illegal and would have remained so with the Moran amendment. But the Senate version did not include such an amendment, and the conference committee and, in particular, the chair persons, appointed to resolve differences between the House and Senate version, rejected de-funding.

President Obama, who has since his election turned a deaf ear to virtually every effort to stop animal cruelty, wasted no time in signing the measure. This despite his campaign promise in 2008 to support an end altogether to equine slaughter for human consumption.

Rep. Moran said, “[W]e’ve far from seen the last word on this issue.

“I am committed to doing everything in my power to prevent the resumption of horse slaughter and will force Congress to debate this important policy in an open, democratic manner at every opportunity. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that Congress pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 2966) to permanently prohibit the slaughter of American horses.”

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Horses could soon be butchered in the U.S. for human consumption after Congress quietly lifted a 5-year-old ban on funding horse meat inspections, and activists say slaughterhouses could be up and running in as little as a month.

Slaughter opponents pushed a measure cutting off funding for horse meat inspections through Congress in 2006 after other efforts to pass outright bans on horse slaughter failed in previous years. Congress lifted the ban in a spending bill President Barack Obama signed into law Nov. 18 to keep the government afloat until mid-December.

Now these evil cretins in Washington, smuggle in a bill that will allow Horses to be added to the list of animals that we can just kill and eat and profit of. The very trusting animal that carried us undeserving creatures around when we conquered this continent and massacred those that were here before us, all because again we decided they were not as deserving.

I am shamed to belong to this doomed class called the human race! Don’t trust a human because they use you as long as they need you, and they eat you when they don’t need you anymore.

Isn’t it enough that we slaughter and torture billion of chickens and cows and turkeys and what not. The streets should be covered in blood our hands surely are. It took me along time to come full circle and realize that it is not just horses, or cats or dogs that save us. Today I am a Vegan. ASPCA Urgent Alert

Dear Animal Advocates,

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is the agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior that administers America's public lands, including the animals who call these lands home. As part of its wild horse management program, the BLM periodically rounds up large numbers of wild horses and moves them into long-term holding facilities.

Over the weekend, the BLM began its latest roundup of more than 1,200 federally protected wild horses on public lands in Nevada. The use of helicopters to run the terrified horses over miles of scorching desert resulted in serious injuries and several horse deaths, which led to temporary suspension of the roundup.

This occurred in spite of the fact that the BLM, under intense public criticism, established an open comment period on its plans for wild horses that is not over until August. Instead of waiting to hear what the American public has to say, BLM officials decided to go forward with these cruel and brutal roundups in the blistering heat of summer (several more are scheduled for the coming weeks). This, of course, is funded by your tax dollars.

What You Can Do
Call the White House Comment Line today at (202) 456-1111. The Obama Administration needs to be told—politely!—that the BLM’s actions are underhanded and inappropriate, and that the current roundup and others scheduled this summer must be canceled immediately.

So Dale Steenbergen at the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce has no comment on a proposed horse slaughter facility here.

Well, here's one suggestion:

Not only no, but hell no!

That should be the message coming from Mr. Steenbergen, the Cheyenne City Council, the Laramie County Commission, Cheyenne LEADS, this area's legislative delegation, the governor (who signed this ill-conceived legislation) and anyone else who cares about progress and prosperity in this community.

There are so many things wrong with this proposal from state Rep. Sue Wallis, R-Recluse, that it is hard to keep track of them. But let's focus on the most important one: Cheyenne's image.

How could Mr. Steenbergen and other community officials here not speak out -- very loudly -- against a proposal that will draw national disdain?

Does Cheyenne want to be known to potential employers and possible technology-minded residents (remember, the world's largest supercomputer soon will be opening here) as a progressive community or as one that imports horses and puts some 7,000 of them to death every year?

Do community leaders hope to attract tourists or chase them away? Are they willing to face a potential national boycott from such groups as the Humane Society simply to allow a rogue state representative and her investors to try to peddle horse meat from Wyoming?

Does the Chamber of Commerce want people to enter town along a newly renovated West Lincolnway only to look across the railroad tracks and see holding pens for horses awaiting their turn in a slaughterhouse, mobile or not?

No, this is not what Cheyenne in 2010 should be about -- not to mention such issues as the odors of holding and slaughtering of horses and the environmental implications of such a facility -- and its leaders need to consistently speak up until this project is laid to rest for good.

It is true that the issue of what to do with horses as they reach the end of their lives is problematic. And parts of Ms. Wallis' proposal make sense.

She would bring in the horses, triage them and then move out those that can be adopted or rescued. Unfortunately, the rest would be killed in some yet-to-be-explained "humane way." Then the meat would be sold -- though to whom and for what use remains unclear, given that there presently is no market for it.

I totally agree with Willie Nelson... let the horses go until we decide what to do with them. Why keep them in holding pens which costs tax payer more then have them in the open range? They want to over fill the holding pens so they can say "Oh we have to many ,it costs too much we must slaughter them!" It's such an evil scheme!

The BLM wants to round up horse, they create and artificial problem to have an excuse to send thousands of horses to Mexico to be slaughtered which makes them money. It's a;ll about money and about cattle and the beef industry. Nothing destroys grazing land more then cattle, they rip the grass out by it's roots when they graze, Horses do not. The people are lying to the public who knows little about horses and believe what the government tells them. They say the horses destroy their environment, don't make me laugh, as if the BLM cared about the environment. It's them that are destroying the environment by allowing too many cattle to graze. But it's the beef industry and they have they power. They want as many horses as they can to send them to slaughter.

The French pay top dollar for Horse meat so do the Japanese.e It's a scam and they stand there with straight faces proclaiming it's ll for the good of the horses and the tax payer. It's bold faced lies.

Horses Lose Freedom Over Fears of Overpopulation, Starvation

Gerlach, Nev., a sleepy little town an hour and a half north of Reno, turns into the third-largest city in the state once a year when a colorful crowd descends upon the nearby Burning Man Festival.

This is not the season for Burning Man, and yet Gerlach has been a very busy place in the last few weeks. Media, activists and at least one billionaire have descended on the town to witness one of the largest wild horse roundups in the nation's history.

The goal for the government is to gather just over 11,000 wild horses nationwide before the end of the year. More than half of the horses are located in Nevada, right around Gerlach.

The Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) oversees the roundups for the federal government. When it comes to wild horses, the government has been clear about its goal: The horses are overpopulated and starving because there are too many of them for the land to sustain, so they need to be removed.

"The evidence is stark," said Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar. "You see horses that essentially have nothing but bones and ribs on them, horses that are simply starving out there on the range."

The BLM says it is doing these roundups to protect the horses and to "manage" their population.

Activists are crying foul, saying the government's census numbers on the horses are inaccurate. They argue the horses are not overpopulated or starving, and the roundups hurt the horses. They want the horses to remain wild.

Many activists claim the government is doing this to benefit cattle ranchers who are a powerful lobbying group. "They are zeroing out too many of the legal herds," said Craig Downer, a wild horse advocate. "Their so-called appropriate management levels that have been set are not viable in the long term, so they're setting up these horses to a crippling low number that's not adaptable."

The day before the scheduled media tour, the scene was quiet at Bruno's Country Club, the little saloon, motel and restaurant that has become the unofficial headquarters of the BLM. The sun was just starting to set and Bruno's was glowing under the purple clouds in the light.

Seemingly out of nowhere, a man in a tuxedo and a horse-head mask bicycled by the dusty parking lot. One of the local rangers didn't even blink at the sight, saying he's probably a "burner."

"Burners" are a group of eccentric people who live in Gerlach year round and organize the annual festival.

Billionaire's Wife Wants to Purchase Land for Horses

As he bicycled away, choppers appeared in the sky. A few people from the town gathered in front of the saloon as two helicopters floated closer and closer to Bruno's and eventually just landed right there in the field in front of the gas station.

Doors opened and out popped Madeleine Pickens, the blonde and perfectly-coiffed wife of billionaire oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens.

Wearing a tan shall and Ralph Lauren cowboy boots, she pushed her 18-year-old blind dog Ollie in a baby stroller across the field and made her way to her room at Bruno's where she would spend the night.

Following her was her entourage: two assistants, her twin sister, two horse consultants, her photographer and three helicopter pilots. Pickens arrived to watch the horse-gathering process and to take a look at the land where she hopes one day to build a horse refuge.

"They're in holding areas right now," she said of the horses. "So let's take them out and put them on the range where they can roam freely as natural to them, and then allow the American public to come and visit them just as they would in any national park."

Pickens is upset about the horse roundups and wishes they would stop, but she's putting her energy and money into what happens to the horses after they get gathered.

"I made a proposal to the Bureau of Land Management, and I said, 'Let me create an eco-sanctuary. I will purchase the land,'" said Pickens. "Initially, they loved it. Then they changed their mind, and there was a change in the government. But you know, really Republican or Democrat, they've never been good on horse issues. It's a cattleman's issue, and it's a very difficult issue to fight."

The problem is, she needs the Department of Interior to agree to her plan in order to buy the property and place the horses in Nevada, but the department so far has refused.

"I think her proposal is one that needs to be looked at in conjunction with other proposals," Salazar said. "We are proposing the creation of three additional wild horse preserves in places that have better forage [than Nevada] to be able to deal with what is essentially an 11,000-horse problem."

The problem is where to house these horses after they have been gathered. Tough economic times mean people are not adopting horses as often, so most of the horses end up in long-term horse-holding shelters funded by taxpayers' money. The government calls the holding areas "preserves," but the activists call them "concentration camps."

The emotions run high when it comes to wild horses.

'Let Them Go': Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow Against Roundups

Prominent figures like the singers Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow have spoken out against the roundups, even accusing the government of leading the wild horses to eventual slaughter.

"I'm speaking for the horse here," Nelson said. "I think he's getting the worst deal here. There's a lot of land out there. The horses are penned up. Let them go until we decide what to do with them. In the meantime, let's take care of them. Don't slaughter them."

The slaughter of horses is illegal in the United States, but the activists claim the horses get shipped to Mexico or Canada, where it is allowed.

The day of the roundup featured a clear, blue sky. The BLM led a caravan of 12 cars carrying media representatives and horse advocates towards Solider Meadows field where cowboys had worked all morning to set up traps and locate the horses.

The drive took two hours from Gerlach on a muddy road, which caused two flat tires on the journey. When the caravan of media and BLM representatives arrived, there was an announcement that a set of helicopters operated by the contractor was on a recon mission trying to spot some mustangs in the high hills surrounding the trap site.

In Nevada, more than 600 horses have been rounded up since Dec. 29. A handful of them were standing around inside of a holding pen near the trap site. Mares, colts and male horses were divided into separate pens.

"They should be 100 pounds, maybe 200 pounds heavier than what they are," said Alan Shepherd of BLM, pointing to the horses in the pen. "Going into the winter, we don't want horses in this condition. We want to get the horses before they really start declining."

After a roundup, the animals were loaded onto trucks and driven out to Fallon, Nev. to be put in a short-term holding area with the rest of the horses. On a successful day, the BLM rounds up about 50-100 horses.

After several hours of waiting, with only a couple of hours of sunlight left, the recon helicopter spotted a band. Visitors who came to watch the roundups quickly drove over to the "trap" area to sit on the side of a dusty hill and wait.

After about 45 minutes, a helicopter appeared in the distance. It got louder and louder as its rotors appeared over the edge of the hill.

The helicopter popped out from behind the slope, large, loud and close. In front of the chopper, a long band of horses galloped toward the enclosure. Despite their speed, the mustangs seemed almost quiet and slow compared to the loud buzzing of the helicopter that hovered above them.

Helicopters Round Up Horses

The horses ran in a straight, long line until they were caught.

The scene was dramatic as the cowboys on either side of the traps corralled the horses and directed them over to the loading truck. The horses whinnied and jumped on top of each other and banged against the fences.

For these mustangs, their time in the wild has come to an end.

The activists had horrified looks on their faces. One of them wanted to go down to the trap and monitor the horses' breathing, but the BLM representative didn't let her.

There were another two roundups, and each time the helicopter flew low over a long line of running horses and directed them from the distant hills into the traps. The plan was to continue the process until a total of 3,000 horses were rounded up from the area.

The government insists wild horses won't ever disappear entirely because they reproduce quickly and often. The activists say all this is going to lead wild horses to extinction.

The sun was setting as Pickens jumped back into her helicopter to survey the golden, brush-covered hills below that were hiding small bands of the remaining free, wild horses -- and the land she hopes one day to put them on.

Horse dragged to his death behind a car on purpose.

On Sunday 3rd January 2010 in the town of Olympia, Greece, a horse was dragged behind a car for 2km before being thrown into a ditch. Still alive and screaming in pain both the horse's forelegs were broken and it was completely skinned on one side with deep wounds exposing it's intestines. A vet later destroyed the horse humanely.

People who witnessed the incident reported it to police immediately and the person responsible apparently laughed and boasted about it. We are told by our counterparts in Greece, that police so far have not taken it seriously and have not apprehended the person who openly admits committing this crime.

Just When We Thought It Couldn’t Get Worse – Government Claims More Than 670,000 Acres Can Only Support 100 to 200 Horses

The proposed Eagle HMA plan puts these wild horses at great risk because the BLM is reducing the number of horses to dangerously low numbers, which could threaten the viability of the herd. Many horse advocates believe this is the BLM’s method of systematically dwindling horse population numbers down to untenable levels in order to ultimately eradicate these American living legends from public lands.

The Obama Administration is continuing the Bush Administration policy of targeting wild horses in order to serve special cattle and other industry interests. Under President Obama's oversight, the BLM is actually accelerating the pace of wild horse removals, with 12,000 horses targeted for capture from our public lands in Fiscal Year 2010 alone. The majority of these horses will be sent to government holding facilities, where they will join the 35,000 wild horses already stockpiled at taxpayer expense."

Horses, the American Mustang, a symbol of spirit and freedom.
Today these magnificent beings face an uncertain future.

Men has no need for them anymore and many men seem to believe, that if men has no use for it, it then must go. How sad, how terrible, how unenlightened.

I remember watching the movie "Misfit" with Marilyn Monroe, when I was very young. (Excerpt from Movie Comment section: This is a movie about a woman in Reno, Nevada (where else?) who is there to get a divorce. On a whim (she makes up her mind fast!) she drives out to the desert on the day of her divorce with a washed out aging cowboy (Clark Gable) and his buddy (Eli Wallach) as well as her friend (Thelma Ritter). This begins a wistful adventure and sometimes sad relationship for her with the cowboy and his misfit friends (including Montgomery Clift). They grapple with life's issues from divorce, friendship, greed and even cruelty until finally, everyone's character and philosophy of life is laid bare in a showdown over 6 wild horses.)

This movie left a deep and lasting impression in my heart. I somehow sensed that these beautiful Horses that love freedom so much, that fight with all their might to remain free are somehow linked my me in some way that I do not understand. In many ways I have been a Misfit all my life not fitting in all together. In the movie, the sadness of the characters and their pathetic life's are a reflection of society and the endless pursuit of happiness that leaves so many empty, still. The wild mustangs fight for their freedom opens up all the misery at the end. It is utterly gut wrenching to see Marilyn in the character of Roslyn throw herself between the men and the horses.

In today’s world they the Horses, The Wild Mustangs are indeed Misfits, misunderstood, under appreciated or even not appreciated at all, belittled and nullified, declared useless and many called them a nuisance. What a sin against God to say God created something that is useless or a nuisance, what a sin against God!

We humans, what do we really know and understand about them ... NOTHING. Do we know what they know, or think? No, we don’t. Our heads are filled with knowledge but our hearts are ignorant.

By simply observing with our eyes and our hearts we should know, that they love their life as much as we do love our, they love to be free as we do, and they can take care of themselves pretty well if left alone, unfortunately as many of us have forgotten how to do.

What a gift they are, and yet we don’t see it, we throw these gift aside after they lost their purpose to us, like a broken toaster, or a broken doll.

But they are not toasters, not dolls, they are of flesh and blood, the same God that created all life creates them, they are full of spirit. THEY ARE IN this world and they are a blessing from God!!!

We tend to our automobiles as if they were irreplaceable; we care for materials things and neglect the truly irreplaceable. I cannot think of a world without them and I am tortured every day by the knowledge that we make them suffer horribly, even eat them, that we find it acceptable to use them for anything to make a buck.

My heart has sunken so deep over this. Almost every day I cry! I understand them. Their eyes when they look at me talk silently to me. They say “We know you are one of many who understand, but there are millions that don’t!” Their eyes say: “We are afraid!” Life to us without freedom is not life at all!” Their eyes say: “What have we done to fall from the good graces of humans? What have we done!” “Have we not served you and carried you?”
“Have we not earned our place on this earth and in history?” “Why are you so cruel to us?” I can only look back in to their eyes, lower my head and be ashamed for humanity!

Sheryl Crow’s plea to Stop Wild Horse Roundups gets National Attention

RENO, Nev. (AP)— Sheryl Crow is joining others in calling on the federal government to halt roundups of wild horses in the West, branding them as inhumane and unnecessary.

The Grammy Award-winning singer has asked President Barack Obama and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to scrap a proposed roundup of 2,500 mustangs in northern Nevada.

“With one voice we are insisting that our government stop managing these beautiful and important animals to extinction,” Crow said in a statement released by the Cloud Foundation, a Colorado Springs, Colo.-based horse advocacy group.

The singer Sheryl Crow is urging people to get involved in a campaign to save America’s wild horses.

"I think it will be a real shame when we look back and we don't have these incredible species, and I guess my best hope would be that people, individuals, step up at this point and really protect these animals," the 46-year-old Grammy-winning singer says in a documentary film "Saving the American Wild Horse."

The programme, which will be show on the American Documentary Channel, is directed by James Kleinert, narrated by Peter Coyote and features Viggo Mortensen.

Crow, who lives in Tennessee and owns a wild mustang named Colorado, says the animals are part of American history but are being sacrificed in big business' drive for Western lands.

"We're starting to get really, really far away from our heritage and what this country is based on," she says.

Advertised as "World Famous" Lipizzaners... but they are NOT the Vienna Lippizaners nor are the riders Exellent!

UPDATE:

I found out that these are NOT the famous Lipizzaner that you would think of when you hear "World Famous" meaning the ones from Vienna.

The riding school of Vienna is the cream of the crop, the riders are superb and the standards are VERY HIGH, the rules and how the animals are treated is impeccable. A Vienna School Lipizzaner has only one rider through it's live and when the riders retires the horse does as well.

This "World Famous Lipizzaner Show" show is a gimmick based on the real thing, designed to make money, there is no tradition and the standards are obviously not as high as those of the real Vienna school. All you have to do it watch some of the videos of the 2nd rate riders online and compare them to the real thing.

Since I found out in time before I went to see, and I immediately canceled the tickets. I have no idea how these animal are threaded and what goes on behind the scenes so I certainly won't support it.

I really don't understand how they can get away with calling it the "World Famous" Lipizzaner since they know that most everyone that knows about them would assume these are the Horses from Vienna. When you see the video of the riders from the Vienna school and those from this show you can see the difference in quality of ridership and quality of horses as far as trained!

I love horses regardless, I don't care if they are purebred, or wild, mustangs whatever, so this is not about that, but it's about the fact that this is presented in a misleading manner.

The horses I love regardless. I hope they tread them well. I know the Horses in Vienna are treated wonderfully, but I don't know that about this show and what goes on behind the scenes!

House Passes Mustang Management Bill by: Pat Raia

A bill promoting increased on-range management for wild horses and burros came closer to becoming law today when the U.S. House of Representatives passed it 239-185.

Introduced by Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) HR 1018, the Restore Our American Mustangs Act, amends the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971 to allow the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to increase acreage available to free roaming herds, and to develop wild horse and burro sanctuaries on public lands.

The bill also calls for wider use of contraception to control herd growth, directs the BLM to expand its wild horse and burro adoptions programs, and forbids the euthanasia or sale of healthy horses to commercial slaughter.

It now moves to the Senate for approval.

Nancy Perry, vice president of Government Affairs for the Humane Society of the United States, said the vote represents a step toward more cost-effective, humane wild horse and burro management.

"It helps the BLM get past its practice of round-up and holding," she said.

The BLM currently manages more than 33,000 wild horses and burros on public land.

No one from the BLM was immediately available for comment.

The History of The Trakehner Horse

Next to the history and story of the American Mustang, the History and story of the Trakehner Horse is most fascinating and inspiring to me. I spend many years and up 'till today absorbed and facinated by Trakehners. Their grueling journey fleeing from the advancing Russian Army in 1944 that killed most of these magnificant horses and left only the most enduring, strong and true survivors reminds me in many ways of the sad "Trail Of Tears"! Indeed it was a trail of tears for horse and men. Many gave all to save this breed and thankfully were able to restablish this breed after the war in Germany.

The oldest warm blood in the world the Trakehner is known for it's beauty, endurance and excellence. One of the most famous Trakehner was "Tempelhüter" translated "Guardian of the Temple"

Tempelhüter: Chief sire in Trakehnen 1916-1931. At that time, considered the perfect example of the Trakehner. As illustration of his unrivaled significance, a statue of this magnificent stallion was erected in front of the State Stud at Trakehnen where it remained until being taken as war booty to Russia after World War II.

Trakehnen The Trakehner horse is the oldest warmblood breed in the world, with a history spanning over 400 years. The official name, "The East Prussian Warmblood Horse of Trakehner Origin" hints to the roots of this magnificent breed: the region of East Prussia once belonging to Germany, but lost during World War II to Russia. The origin of the breed is a small horse - bred locally in East Prussia - known as the "Schwaike". The Schwaike was known for its versatility and endurance. When this breed was crossed with imported English thoroughbred and Arabian stallions, the resulting horse was named after the main stud it came from: Trakehnen. The original purpose of the Trakehner was for use as calvary mount. In the early 18th century, King Friedrich Wilhelm I realized that a new type of cavalry mount was needed as war tactics had changed and demanded a faster, lighter horse that also posessed power & endurance. In 1732, he moved the best of his cavalry horses to the new royal stud farm Trakehnen and began to systematically breed a horse that would meet many criteria. The new cavalry mounts had to be attractive enough to be a representative horse for his officers but additionally had to be tough enough to survive hard situations and come out sound. Through his efforts, the Trakehner breed evolved. At the same time, East Prussian framers were breeding the same base of horses. East Prussia therefore had two separate, but equally outstanding sources for riding horses. The military & civilian herds were mixed often, further consolidating the best possible traits.

The main stud Trakehnen was a huge compound, a city of its own, covering some 15.000 acres. Apart from the main complex, sixteen "Vorwerke" (more distant barns) were home to the famous mare herds. The Trakehner horse was bred depending on its color; which may sound strange but made perfect sense once one takes into consideration that the differently colored herds also showed certain traits that were useful for the population. The black herd at Gurdzen for example consisted of mares that had the most substance and were very strong and outstanding "workers". Famous stallions like Ararad and Jagdheld were crossed with these mares, mainly to maintain a balance to the otherwise very refined Trakehners.

Even today, these "heaviers" genes can come through in the descendants of this great herd. The chestnut mares were collected at Trakehnen itself. Descending from famous thoroughbreds like Thunderclap xx, the chestnut mares were elegant, sensitive and exhibited the greatest performance potential. One of the most successful dressage lines of all times in warmblood breeding, the Hanovarian A-line, founded by the Trakehner stallion Abglanz, originated from the chestnut herd. Bay and brown mares were collected at Kalpakin. They were known for outstanding temperament and again, excellent rideability. And at Bajorgallen, the "mixed herd" was stationed. Here mares of all colors including the gray horses were bred to many of the Arabian stallions. Foundation mares like Kassette and Donna came out of that exquisite group of horses and even today, 60 years after their time are the most prominent names in the history of Trakehner horses. A chief sire at Trakehnen lived like a king. Each stallion had a huge paddock that was fenced by trees and bushes. The stall was a stone house, open to one side, built like a round pen with a luxury roof and beautiful steel ornaments.

Each stallion was assigned a private groom, always older and proven men that had spent their lives at Trakehnen and had that special "6th horse sense" built in. It must have been a special view each morning when the men opened the giant barn doors at Trakehnen and waves of gleaming horses made their way along the paths to the pastures. There were no fences at Trakehnen, the horses were guarded by a man on a horse, watching over "his" friends every day. Weanlings were kept in large herds and had all the freedom a young horse could dream of. At three years old colts were started under saddle and thoroughly tested to determine their future: cavalry, riding horse or future sire for Trakehnen and the East Prussian local studs. Obviously with so many high quality horses, only the very best were chosen as potential future sires. These - the cream of the crop - next underwent the stallion performance test. Performance testing lasted a full year and was held at Zwion, the state's stallion test station and the first of its kind in the world. The colts were driven, raced, used for hard fox hunting and eventing, trained in dressage and tested over jumps.

All colts were evaluated thoroughly on character, rideability and temperament. Only the very best of these magnificent animals were chosen to contribute to the prestigious gene pool at Trakehnen. By far more mares were distributed among the smaller breeding farms of the East Prussian farmers than at Trakehnen. This resulted in an indigenous breed, which was the great advantage of the East Prussian as opposed to other breeds, since it made for a great consistency. Their quality improved as Trakehnen and the bigger private studs raised a large number of their foals. The state stallion depots and the riding and driving clubs formed their backbone. At local and national shows, they competed with larger breeders.

But Trakehnen was much more than horses and people, operating one of East Prussia's biggest agricultural farms with 900 cows, 600 sheep and other farm animals. At this agricultural farm, a stock of 500 Trakehner horses was only used for farm work. With the addition of English and Arabian thoroughbreds the Trakehner achieved the great beauty, legendary soundness as well as the wonderful floating way of going and great jumping abilities that makes the Trakehner horse world-famous. Today, quality Thoroughbred and Arabian horses are allowed into the otherwise closed studbook. This consistency of breeding helps maintain the "Trakehner look", "freshens" the bloodlines and adds great rideability and sensitivity. The Trakehner horse was the most successful sport horse in the world between the two World Wars. Olympic gold in dressage went to Piccolomini in 1924, and the silver medal went to Sabel. In 1936, the dressage gold medal was won by the 7-year old Kronos, the gold medal in eventing was won by the Trakehner Nurmi and the winning German eventing team was made up of two Trakehners and one Thoroughbred.

The East Prussian warmblood horse was exported not only to Europe but all over the world. In 1938 some 478.000 horses lived in East Prussia with 1.289 stallions covering 89.628 East Prussian mares. Trakehners were used for all purposes: hard-working farm horses in the fields, courageous & sound cavalry mounts, for fox hunting, driving and last but not least for horse racing. Between 1921 and 1936, the hardest steeplechase in the world, the Pardubice steeplechase, was won 9 times by East Prussian horses. Dominant influential sire lines Over the years, such careful breeding & selection of breeding stallions created some legendary sire lines. These Chief Sires had a dominant influence on East Prussian breeding, which is still felt today. Perfectionist xx: 1899 foaled in UK, chief sire in Trakehnen 1904-1906. He was most influential through his sons Tempelhüter, Jagdheld, Irrlehrer, and his daughter, Posthalterin, dam of the foundation sire Parsival. Tempelhüter: Chief sire in Trakehnen 1916-1931. At that time, considered the perfect example of the Trakehner.

As illustration of his unrivaled significance, a statue of this magnificent stallion was erected in front of the State Stud at Trakehnen where it remained until being taken as war booty to Russia after World War II. Dampfross: His line is still very popular today, with many leading Trakehner stallions representing his bloodline. Pythagoras: by Dampfroß out of Pechmarie by Tempelhüter. Chief sire 1933-1944. Combining the blood of the two "Century Sires" Dampfross and Tempelhüter, Pythagoras was Trakehnen's leading sire prior to WWII. His son Totilas and daughter Tapete were instrumental in revitalizing the breed after the war. Cancara: Representing the idea of combining Arabian and English TB, Cancara was one of Trakehnen's leading sport horse producers. His daughters Donna and Kokette are among the most prominent Trakehner mares of all times. Fetysz ox: Fetysz is the foundation stallion of today's best dressage lines in the Trakehner breed. Tragically shot by the invading Russian Army, Feytsz ox nevertheless left his legacy as even Olympic competitors today carry his valuable blood. Harun al Raschid: He influenced the breed especially through his outstanding daughters, most importantly the famous Kassette. The blood of Kassette continues to amaze all over the world, from Australia's former event champion Kassiber to the latest Trakehner champion stallion of 2001: K2, the quality of the Kassette line cannot be denied.

War and Trek During World War I, the population of the Trakehner horse was halved and it took great efforts of the breeders to bring the breed back to its former numbers and famous standard of quality. But in 1944, in the closing days of WWII, it seemed these heroic efforts would have been in vain. In the harsh winter, as the Russian Army broke across the front lines and invaded East Prussia, people were forced to leave their land and belongings behind to save not much more than their lives. In October 1944 it was decided to evacuate the main stud Trakehnen. A total of 800 of the best mares, stallions and young colts were loaded on trains and driven to the West. Most of these horses were lost to the Russians. The private breeders and their horses were not allowed to leave until January of 1945, when there was almost no time to escape. In the terrible and cold winter, the "Trek" began; a gathering of tens of thousands of people and some 18.000 East Prussian horses bundled their most precious belongings in wagons and began walking and driving westbound. Mares were heavy in foal and sometimes there wasn't food for days. Thousands of lives were lost, horses that wouldn't make it any further had to be left behind, the horror of these months is hard to describe in words. Eventually, most East Prussians reached the safety of the West, but at a terrible price.

By the end of World War II, Trakehnen was no more. This "Horse Pardise", once a virtual "City of Horses" was laid to waste, and only a handful of Trakehner horses survived the horrific performance test that forever after would be referred to in hushed tones as "The Trek". From the legendary, great mare herds of Trakehnen - once grouped by color - only the strongest survived . . a mere 21 original main stud mares. Trakehnen and its horses seemed to have been lost forever. It is only because of a few dedicated individuals, totally committed to saving this great treasure, that today the Trakehner is not a footnote in history. The most important stallions were lost during the trek. Some - like Feytsz ox - were shot by the army, others were captured and taken to Kirov, where they established one of today's most powerful sport horses, the Russian Trakehner. A new beginning Of the 1.100 once beautiful and proud horses from the main stud Trakehnen, only around 100 individuals survived, many with tremendous injuries. Additionally, the East Prussian horses that belonged to the private breeders and had made the trek were scattered all over what remained of Germany. The following years were spent trying to relocate and collect and catalog these few Trakehners. In October 1947, the "West German Association of Breeders and Friends of the Warmblood Horse of Trakehner Origin", today known as the "Trakehner Verband", was established, replacing the East Prussian Stud Book Society. Together with the Trakehner horses of private breeders from East Prussia, a few hundred Trakehners were available for rebuilding the breed.

The Verband's first president, Baron von Schrötter and his manager, Dr. Fritz Schilke, spent most of their time in the years following the war finding and relocating the horses. In 1950, the state government of Lower Saxony and the German government stepped in to help, providing the Trakehner Verband with a central breeding facility in Hunnesrück, Lower Saxony. Together with the Trakehner stud farms Rantzau and Schmoel, Hunnesrück soon became famous. The last original Trakehner brood mares from the main stud were collected here and used to breed future generations. Great foundation mares like Kassette, Polarfahrt, Donna, Tapete, Halensee and others found a last home in these Trakehner farms, together with some of the last sires rescued from the main stud, like the Pythagoras-son Totilas, who was most important to establish the Trakehner breed in West Germany.

Smaller private breeders were given the opportunity to board their mares there, the resulting foals belonged to the "Trakehner Gesellschaft", a corporation founded to preserve and promote the Trakehner in West Germany and later the whole world. In the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), the situation was much the same. After the Soviet forces had closed the borders, the Trakehner horses that were stranded in the GDR were scattered all around the country and again, Trakehner lovers and enthusiasts, many of them East Prussian breeders that had lost everything, started to collect and breed these horses and maintained a high quality Trakehner population until the reunification of Germany in 1991, when not only the wall came down and Germany grew together again, but when also this fine breed was unified. It was due to yet another outstanding personality, Dietrich von Lenski, who originated in one East Prussia's biggest private stud farms, Kattenau, that the "Trakehner Förderverein" was established. The Förderverein is an organization that helps to promote the Trakehner in the international sport world by providing exceptional horses to internationally successful riders. Also, young talents are spotted and the owners are funded to maintain a high training standard for these horses. The most prominent example of such a Förderverein-owned horse was the black Trakehner stallion Habicht (by Burnus AAH out of Hallo, by Goldregen). Habicht was given to the Trakehner Verband stud at Hunnesrück for breeding purposes and yet, at the same time, the Förderverein provided the young German rider Martin Plewa with this incredible stallion.

The results on both sides were outstanding: Habicht won the international CCI*** at Achselschwang and also established a famous stallion line, today represented for example by his elite son Sixtus (out of Stradelle by Ibikus) and the German premium stallion Windfall, Germany's horse of the year in 1999 and now an approved ATA stallion in North America. In the 1980s, the Trakehner Verband owned three breeding operations: Hunnesrück, Rantzau and Birkhausen, a wonderful farm in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. From stud Birkhausen, the Trakehner conquered the world. It was in Birkhausen that in 1970 the gray mare Abiza was covered by the bay stallion, Donauwind. She exported in foal to Canada and the resulting colt later became the internationally famous Abdullah. In addition to Birkhausen, several private breeders established new breeding farms, some of them gaining world stature.

Gottfried Hoogen's Vogelsangshof was the origin of the best Trakehner dressage sire of all times, Mahagoni, who later moved to yet another famous farm, Hörem of Hubertus Poll, who in later years stood such incredible individuals as Consul, Rockefeller and today, Buddenbrock. And of course Hörstein, founded by Adam Dreßler in 1962 and today run by his daughter Christa and her husband Wolfgang Diehm always stood out, both nationally and internationally, and was Habicht's home for many years.
