How a Facebook Connection Became a Real Friendship: An Afternoon with Carrol

It’s remarkable how some of the most meaningful connections in my life begin in the most unexpected ways. Carrol and I met on Facebook—yes, of all places. We’d been Facebook friends for at least five or six years, maybe even longer. We watched each other’s lives unfold online, supporting, liking, and caring from a distance. We had plenty of mutual friends in common, but we weren’t personal friends—just Facebook friends.

Hosea and Carrol

Then, out of the blue, Carrol messaged me. She was coming to New York City for business and wanted to meet for coffee. I was immediately compelled to say yes. Carrol is everything you’d hope to find in a new friend: strong, interesting, artistic, and resilient. She’s a cancer survivor, a widow, a vibrant grandmother, and a legacy child. Her presence is inspiring, and her determination is unmistakable.

We met on a perfect, non-humid Sunday afternoon in July at Eat My Cake on 125th in Harlem. As always, I brought my camera. For me, the best way to get to know someone and feel completely at ease is to take pictures. Carrol was the perfect muse—a natural in front of the lens, and the conversation flowed effortlessly. We talked for two hours over tea and pastries. I had a croissant and a really good raspberry iced tea with no sugar, which let the notes of the berry come through. Carrol had coffee and a muffin. Our conversation covered everything: overcoming health scares, losing the love of her life, caretaking, art, politics, and ultimately, the beauty of life.

At one point, Carrol noticed the gap in my smile and said we could be related. We laughed, realizing that our ancestors came from the same parts of the South. There was an immediate and undeniable sense of familiarity between us. Reflecting on it later, I thought about a Buddhist theory that’s always resonated with me: in Buddhism, there are no coincidences. It’s believed that, lifetime after lifetime, we are born within an orbit, and the other bodies in that orbit are mystically connected. We may change relationships from one lifetime to the next, but we always seem to reappear in each other’s orbit. That afternoon, it felt as though Carrol and I were simply reconnecting in this lifetime—two souls, familiar and comfortable, brought together again.

During our meeting, Aliyyah Baylor, the owner of Eat My Cake, came out to thank us for choosing her café at her bakery for our meeting. She had overheard our conversation and, in true Harlem fashion, she and Carrol quickly became friends. As it turned out, they would both be attending the same event at Martha’s Vineyard soon. I reminded Aliyyah that I had photographed her on Christmas Eve for the Harlem Business Development District. She remembered right away and mentioned that the photo is still featured on their website.

Aliyyah and Carrol

This experience was a powerful reminder that, despite its reputation, social media can bring people together in real, meaningful ways. Sometimes, digital connections turn into authentic friendships—if you’re willing to show up and be present.

Third Annual Stoop Sessions, Big Band Jubilee, A freedom Day Celebration, Wednesday; June 19th; Harlem West 119th St; Between Lenox and Adam Clayton Powell; Block Party; Juneteenth 2024

There was a time when I did'nt know what Juneteenth was. I remember upon learning the history how mad I was at the whites who didn't tell the enslaved people that slavery was over. I could only image the continued abuse those people suffered when they could have been somewhat free. I met some friends both the Freedom Celebration in Harlem this week. We had a blast the music was mostly jazz the audience was full of joy, the entertainment was perfect. It ended with a dace party of classic R and B.

Juneteenth Weekend and Lenox Ave and 7th Ave Harlem USA 2024

I was walking to the bank Saturday morning, got to 116th street and realized it was #Juneteenth and celebrations were on; It got me excited and I made a determination that, after the bank to come back down and take some pictures.

I walked back to 129th street and packed a camera bag, washed the dishes, ate lunch, and by the time I got back to 116 I think it was about 3:30 to 4pm the light was setting and usually would be kind of soft directional light, but I think the sun is hitting a little different now. The light was contrasty and a little hard for early Spring. Regardless I found a low point on the ground made myself comfortable and photographed humanity. From my perspective, to my left I could photograph subjects in the shade with direct light, directly in front of me subjects were facing direct light, and to the right, back lighting the

About Juneteenth? How can we celebrate freedom in a country that constantly reminds Black citizens that they are not really free? I think it's the freedom to be creative, the freedom to love, the freedom to find joy in the most suppressing situations, the freedom to hope is what we actually celebrate. subjects.

A Walk With Humanity on Easter Sunday 2023 NYC

A Walk With Humanity on Easter Sunday 2023 NYC

I was determined not to say Happy Easter today. Why should I, I don’t believe that any human could rise from the dead. And I don’t need anyone to die for my sins.

Today before I left the house to meet friends for lunch, I called a Rebbe friend of mine (not to be confused with a Rabbi). “He said, 'Happy Easter' first, and it caught me by surprise,” The last thing I thought I would hear from my Jewish secular friend was Happy Easter. I responded with, “Happy Spring, Happy New Harvest, Happy Solstice, anything but Happy Easter.” He said, “Well, I don’t believe Jesus is the son of God, but it’s a nice holiday.”

I said, “I’m not subscribing to any of it this year. 3000 years of these so-called three major religions and no peace!” “I ranted about the wars in the Middle East and how it’s all just real estate grabs, and how gullible people were being used to fight a war of real estate hidden in religion.” He pretty much agreed with me and somehow calmed me down a bit.

After our conversation, I headed downtown to meet up with friends. After a nice Sunday walk through the Upper West Side, lunch, and goodbyes, I walked through Times Square and came upon some street preachers with Jesus Loves You signs and a megaphone.

I leaned on a wall across from them and pulled out my camera. I shot pictures for 10 minutes before one of them walked over to me to hand me a pamphlet and tell me about his lord and savior Jesus. As he talked, I kept eye contact and listened intently. Instead of becoming argumentative, when he finished talking, I told him how much I appreciated him for what he was trying to do for humanity, and he sincerely thanked me for listening.

He asked me if I wanted to accept Jesus Christ. I declined the offer, and when he asked me why, I went into my Buddhist reasoning for not practicing his religion while showing him appreciation for trying his best to “save” me. I was grateful for the reminder that even though we all have different beliefs, it’s important to listen and respect each other. We both smiled, shook hands, and said our goodbyes.

As I walked away, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the encounter. I realized that even though I don’t believe in the same things as the street preacher, I could still find common ground with him and connect on a human level. It was a reminder that despite our differences, we all share the same human experience of joy, pain, and ultimately, the desire to find meaning in our lives.

“I walked away to take more pictures of people on the street,” I was taking pictures of some blooming tulips on a crowded street when a guy walked up to me to suggest I try another angle. I looked at him and smiled, adjusting myself to his suggested angle. “At first glance, he could have easily been a MAGA cap-wearing person, but I said to myself, 'Don’t judge this white dude.'”

I showed him the photo from both my angle and his angle, and we agreed we liked my angle better. We chatted and laughed for a few more minutes.

Walking back to the subway, I passed Nelson (the Jesus Loves You guy from Cameron) again. We waved and smiled at each other one more time.

When I got out of the subway, my Muslim neighbor stopped me to ask about my family and wish me a happy Ramadan. I wished her a happy Ramadan too. When I got to my building, my upstairs neighbor heard me coming in and brought down a big aluminum pan of Mac and Cheese, lamb, chicken, rice, and beans, and in a separate aluminum pan, a beautiful salad topped with avocado, tomatoes, and strawberries. It was so good.

She always feeds us for the holidays. “She told me how much she missed my mother and reminded me of all the Easters we had spent with mama,”

I realized why I woke up so mad today – I was missing my mother.

Curl Fest 2015 Brooklyn, Prospect Park

2015-08-30T16:10:00.003-07:00

My first Curl Fest, just the name of it made me want to be there so I put together a video crew, got model Janine Green and fashion stylist Rick Ramsey, to correspond for me. Cinema photographer Ian Mckenzie got the shots, with moral and physical support from Andrew Padilla and Duane Jones. We created some cool spots to use on http://harlemworldmag.com, and http://www.afroscene.com TV which has just been conceived.

Just like expected Curl Fest was attended by people who love natural hair. As I photographed them I noticed that their skin was beautiful and healthy too, maybe chemical free hair and good skin go hand in hand.

I had this idea to do portraits on a black background in natural light, I love the look.

#curlfest2015I got excited when I saw this woman's hair and made a snap decision to do her portrait on a white background. Might have been deeper on black.

I Love Portraits on White

2014-08-26T01:24:00.002-07:00

I love portraits on white, simple but leaves much to the imagination. August 23, 2014 was the annual Afro Punk Fest in Brooklyn, New York. My favorite event of the year. No place is chill felt so deeply. This year to document all the chill people, I set up a white back drop and an umbrella a few blocks from Commodore Barry Park and asked folks to sit for a portrait as they passed by.

Breakfast at Coppellia, with friends. After some serious diamoku at the NYCC.

After headed home for final preparations for a Marathon reading of Maya Angelou poetry. Wearing my father's tie, I headed out to St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church.

How was it? Well, I felt like I was out of my league as far as spoken word and my knowledge of Maya Angelou. Like I know her as a figure always in my life, but I had not studied her or her poetry. And I don't watch Oprah much. On the real, the only poem I knew of hers was "Phenomenal Woman", which I had mixed feelings about because it is a women's poem, and the few times I had seen it recited, it was always young girls reciting it and I think it's inappropriate for young girls.

All the other readers/artist had multiple titles like actor, director, singer, or dancer, teacher, publisher, there were theater directors, there was George E Tait, Poet Laureate of Harlem. I didn't even know we had a poet laureate of Harlem. There were authors, painters, producers, playwrights, a minister,a journalist, everybody seemed really book smart.

It must have been at least 30 artist reading 90 poems and I was the one person that was just a photographer and when I wrote my bio, I really thought it was gonna be me and some nice ladies in a church basement, eating chicken and pound cake and reading Maya Angelou for three hours. If I knew it was politicians and people I could possibly get work from my bio would have been a little different.

In preparation I recited the poems in my phone and played it over and over, I You Tube-ed Maya Angelou and watched her interviewed. I was in awe of her commitment to society, like I had no idea, her role in Civil Rights, She had a deep influential relationship with Malcolm X a real voice. So I thought I was prepared but these people performing were really prepared, they knew Maya intimately
But when it was my turn, I stepped to the mic, took a deep breath and started to recite but I forgot to put my glasses and when I looked down at my laptop to read I could not see and for a split second could not figure out why I could not see. Not cool. I recovered pretty quickly, but not perfection.

I went back to my seat and listened to people perform and it was beautiful, animated and deep, and i was excited. My next poem was called "Fighting is Natural" for me this poem is natural, I connected from the moment I saw the title, and rehearsed it with confidence and dare I say swag. I had to shake that first fuck up off, so in that moment I chanted to let go of the past and pull this fighter from deep in my life. I found his voice and I slowed him down and I laid it out! I could hear the audience breath with each phrase we were in rhythm. It felt right. I hope I did Maya Angelou proud.

To make a perfect evening even better the night ended with everyone singing "This little light of mine I'm gonna let it shine, this little lite of mine I'm gonna let it shine! This little lite of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. Let it shine! Let it shine! Let it shine!!!!!!" #beautiful #moments

I spent a lot of time in cars, while visiting Lagos. The traffic is very heavy. Pedestrians, entrepreneurs and many vehicles share roads and even some expressways. With the intense amount of humanity in Lagos there is something beautiful where ever you look, despite the challenging infrastructure.

2014-04-24T06:58:00.000-07:00

I recently partly funded a trip to Nigeria to volunteer with an organization called UR4Africa, with a Gofundit.com campaign. I raised about twenty three hundred dollars, I was able to go to Lagos, Nigeria, do great work with two schools, encourage artist, and students, bring lots of art supplies and a brand new Canon Rebel camera, for the program. I loved Nigeria, and with the teaching artist from UR4Africa we did a great job creating disease prevention campaigns with the school children. The other teaching artist are all native and volunteered as well. So with the extra help of the gofundme campaign I was able to by lunches and provide some transportation to the teaching artist, it was really great. Everyone greatly appreciated the Gofundme campaign benefits. Lagos is a beautiful place with a lot of challenges and all the potential of the Universe is there. So for the next few months I am going to double my gofundme campaign efforts, and sell prints from the first trip. To continue to support the Public Art Nigeria project and continue to encourage and inspire one person at a time. We are a Village!

My blue shirt

2014-04-23T02:04:00.004-07:00

This is the story of how I got this really cool shirt.

Two years ago I sent a friend request to this person named Sannie Moe. I saw an image he posted and it drew me in and I went on his page and liked what he posted. I sent a friend request. He accepted and we “liked” random images posted of each other over the years. We had an actual message exchange about life. In that conversation we both said, “Hope to meet you some day”.

So fast forward a few years and I’m in Nigeria, Volunteering for The UR4Africa project and documenting my journey on Facebook, instagram and Twitter, for my Gofundme.com contributors. And I get a message on Face Book from Sannie Moe saying. “ Yo I can’t believe you are in town and I did’nt tell me!” And my first reaction was fear, I didn’t know this dude, do I reply to his message? Within a second I was over my lesser self, and I messaged him back. We exchanged locations and agreed to meet in Victoria Island.

When we meet it was like meeting my little brother. Sannie Moe seemed so familiar like in a past life we were kin of some sort and the story just picked up again in the year 2014 in Nigeria. I really believe that is exactly as the Universe works. And we both were so happy to be hanging out again after so many lifetimes apart. Sanni Moe said he wanted to show me Victoria Island Nigeria from his perspective, and he did.

I had been in Nigeria for six days and didn’t think I would ever take public transportation. And I would look at these crowded beat up yellow mini vans all over Lagos, from the passenger side of my best friends ride, an air conditioned SUV. And I would stare at these people packed like sardines, in a can in Africa’s heat, heat made heavier with the exhaust from the thousands of vehicles, many not meeting environmental standards , many just spewing black smoke. Sliding doors and windows open to circulate fumed filled air. Beautiful black faces pressed against open windows, determined, getting to work, no matter what.

Assisting the bus driver is an attendant riding the yellow bus like it’s a wild horse. Collecting money and stop request. Now for the first time I was with everybody melting in the heat like chocolate, slowly in a great double boiler. Within 10 minutes of meeting my long lost little Nigerian brother I’m on a hot sweaty little bus in bumper to bumper traffic tight with people . Having a conversation about poetry and photography, beauty and religion, freedom and joy, all in the temple of my familiar. It all felt perfectly normal. I was happy and at ease. Free and safe. We jumped out the moving yellow van and was in Sannie’s World. My new friend was a respected young man in the neighborhood,. I was proud to be walking down the street with him. In this land of fabric and tailors, is where Sannie Moe, made my shirt that fits me so well.

Public Art Nigera Final Project (The reason I came to Nigeria)

2014-03-31T09:57:00.002-07:00

The reason I came to Nigeria was to work with the UR4 Africa and Public Art Nigeria. My experience was pretty enlightening on so many levels. One big one was realizing how much karma we share as people. The second this is how sweet the children are in Nigeria. The level of respect these kids show is like nothing I have ever seen. I made a joke to a friend of mine here, that it's no wonder white people come and adopt kids from Africa because all the kids are so respectful and well behaved, no matter what their issues are. But I regress. This project's purpose was to teach children disease prevention, there were four teams, Team Malaria, Team Typhoid, Team Cholera, and Team Obesity. Each team worked with individual teaching artist to create a campaign to promote healthy living. They studied ways to prevent their respective disease created thumb nails and drawings and finally photography, and then some photoshop, and design technique. We then took the individual campaigns and created a calendars that we distributed through the town as a group. The children equipped with knowledge and wisdom talked discuss the topics with their neighbors. As I think back on this day looking at pictures to post almost tearing up and thinking "yes this could have been one of the best days of my life. Special thanks to everyone who contributed to my Go fund me Campaign, folks who gave me art supplies to bring with me and folks who wished me good luck. We are a village!!!! In this pictorial the images were taken by myself and my students here. Please enjoy

Where I'm at now (Nigeria). It rained again on my last night.

2014-03-31T07:33:00.002-07:00

It rained last night. Furious winds or happy gales depending on ones state of life. I was safely in my room looking out the window afraid of a lightning strike, but enjoying the cool winds and thinking "wow another beautiful storm on the eve of my departure back to the U.S".

This being my second post of my stay here but certainly not my last, this post is to honor and thank Olubusola (Shola) and her family for inviting and hosting me here and changing my life. I am in the town of Alagbado, in a beautiful gigantic house, made of stone, with more rooms than I could count. It's Shola family home. All though her mom and siblings are in the States and her Dad the late Captain Michael Abiodun Ayodele, has passed on, I felt welcomed by all of them.

The house like all the other big homes in this area is surrounded by high stone walls and iron gates. Security is high. It is pretty organic around here spinach and other editable greens grows like wild flowers in the gardens as well from almost every crack in the concrete. The trees well there is a lemon tree, a mango tree, a palm tree, a coconut tree and pine apples growing here and there. Chickens, goats, quails, lizards every where (I happen to love lizards) and wild birds all over the place I saw hawks, white breasted black birds, parrots, and these little yellow birds I call sparrows. A couple of really sweet dogs (don't tell anybody they are sweet) and two giant plastic barrels of cat fish home raised.

Outside of the walls are beautiful people many dressed traditionally in all the colors and patterns we know as African prints, and babies, many beautiful babies some wearing nothing more than a diaper playing in dirt, and happy in the moment.

Please enjoy my pictorial of the Ajayi home.

Son Retuns To Mother After 500 Years!

2014-03-23T18:00:00.002-07:00

On March 20th 2014 I departed for Lagos Nigeria my mission; to encourage some kids and encourage my friend Shola, You see Shola is a dreamer like myself and we both believe that one small gesture of compassion will change the world for the better. So because she loves her country so much, she created the Public Art Nigeria Project. The PANA teaches disease prevention and social responsibility through art.

So after a few months of a very successful "Go Fund Me" campaign. I had enough money to travel to Nigeria and bring lots of gifts and join in the fight to encourage children in Lagos Nigeria. For me, a man who feels very connected to the world but especially Africa, this was a chance of a life time. I'd like to think that I am the first of my blood relatives to have returned to the continent after 500 years of slavery and colonization and that made this journey even more special. I was going to the motherland.

But like with any great quest I was met with many obstacles, mostly from people in my life who could not understand why I cared so much, which I had no answer for, I just did, and resented them for not understanding. As time passed, before my departure I came to realize that these folks loved me and did not want me to get hurt in anyway, and my resentment turned to appreciation.

As soon as a I boarded Arik Airlines at JFK I was in Africa, from the crew to the passengers there was something really different. First class looked like a spa, to bad I had to keep moving to coach. But coach was kind of cozy too. My seat mate was a lovely, generous, woman on her way home to Ghana and the guy sitting across the isle from me was this really cool dude I wanted to call uncle but sir sufficed, after the flight he found me confused trying to convert money and offered to pay for the rolling cart I was trying to rent. The plane actually had an area that could best be described as a standing bar and at some point there were as many as 10 men standing around and debating, deep.

As I waited for Shola to pick me up from the airport I met a young man working at the airport and we talked in length about life, aspirations, and joy. Nothing was strange and no one could believe I was not Nigerian and that made me really happy.

Shola showed soon and I was on my way to her house to sleep for a few hours and get right to work. At a public school in the city of Alagbado. Thanks for reading. And look for more post and pictures from Project Africa!
