Wind and Solar Power Paired With Storage Could Power Grid 99.9 Percent of the Time

2012-12-14T14:16:00.001+00:00

Renewable energy could fully power a large electric grid 99.9 percent of the time by 2030 at costs comparable to today’s electricity expenses, according to new research by the University of Delaware and Delaware Technical Community College.

A well-designed combination of wind power, solar power and storage in batteries and fuel cells would nearly always exceed electricity demands while… More

Panorama Perfected

2012-12-14T12:17:00.001+00:00

How about another version of getting the photographer to be photographed? Camera features like panorama angles and stitching have to get innovate, so the next obvious step according to the designing community is to include the photographer into the snapshot, but with precision and finesse. The 360Vision Camera has a hinge connection to the display; that allows you to use it in many different angles, including self-portraits.

360Vision is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Resurrection of Extinct Enzymes Reveals Evolutionary Strategy for the Invention of New Functions

2012-12-14T10:04:00.005+00:00

How does evolution innovate? We exist because our ancestors have had the ability to adapt successfully to changes in their environment; however, merely examining present-day organisms can limit our understanding of the actual evolutionary processes because the crucial events have been masked by the passage of aeons — what we need is a time machine. Scientists from VIB, KU Leuven, University of… More

How Our Sense of Touch Is a Lot Like the Way We Hear

2012-12-14T10:04:00.003+00:00

When you walk into a darkened room, your first instinct is to feel around for a light switch. You slide your hand along the wall, feeling the transition from the doorframe to the painted drywall, and then up and down until you find the metal or plastic plate of the switch. During the process you use your sense of touch to develop an image in your mind of the wall’s surface and make a better… More

Solar Power Prices to Continue Falling Through 2025, Experts Say

2012-12-14T10:04:00.001+00:00

A new survey of experts argues that solar power will become much cheaper through 2025, while expanding greatly—but for these trends to continue for the long term, will require a committment to funding research

Prices for solar modules—the part of solar panels that produce electricity—will continue to fall, in line with the long-term trend since 1980, according to a survey of experts by Near Zero, , a nonprofit energy research organization. However, for prices to keep falling for the long term will require continued committment to research, such as on materials used for making solar… More

by wordlesstech team

The Flyboard is a watersports equipment by Jurmol Yao, allowing propulsion underwater and in the air. It could be compared to a powered wakeboard.

The Flyboard watersports has the propulsion system built directly into the bottom, and uses Electronic Management Kit allowing operation of the PWC throttle and the kill switch.

The Most Organized Desk

2012-12-12T10:49:00.001+00:00

OMG, I love this Integrated Workstation not because it is a sleek and well-organized desk, but because it integrates a very thoughtful daybed datum into the workstation typology. The desk is more than just a space to work, it provides place to charge tablets, laptops, and cell phones. It even encourages a range of postures throughout the day. The best part is that the design doesn’t take up much space. Ah, my next power nap has to be on this!

The Integrated Workstation was designed for Herman Miller and resulted from a partnership between Cranbrook Academy of Art and Herman Miller.

Clustered Lighting

2012-12-06T10:50:00.001+00:00

Though at first glance it looks like a singular unit, the Square Bell hanging pendant is actually 5 lamps in 1. Smaller, pyramid-shaped shades surround a larger central shade, creating a functional cluster that is at once united and separate. The unique placement and angle of each individual shade casts expansive directional illumination, making it an ideal choice for lighting larger spaces.

A Different Kind of Anti-Theft

2012-12-05T13:33:00.001+00:00

When it comes to bicycle theft, the saying remains true- “if they want it bad enough, they’ll take it.” The designers at Cycling Boom believe bigger chains and bulky locks are just one solution to deterring theft, which is why they’ve created a unique tag system that is effective in a different way. These discrete metal tags can be placed anywhere on the bike and feature a custom identification number that can be looked up in an online universal registry system. Buyers can look up the used bike’s ID to ensure they aren’t purchasing a stolen bike, discouraging overall theft.

The Flip Headphones

2012-12-05T09:07:00.001+00:00

The Flip is a hybrid speakers and headphones concept, something that is getting very popular these days. With two modes to use them, the flick of a switch allows you to stream music straight into your ears or share it with friends. Both modes work with your devices using a headphone jack or USB, depending upon how you want to go about it. Awesome!
