In 1923, Coco Chanel said to Harper's Bazaar that "Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance." Coco Chanel always kept the clothing she designed simple, comfortable and revealing. Unlike most designers in that Europe, she kept the woman inside the clothes at the center of her creations. "I gave women a sense of freedom; I gave them back their bodies: bodies that were drenched in sweat, due to fashion's finery, lace, corsets, underclothes, padding." She took what were considered poor fabrics like jersey and upgraded them. The iconic Chanel jacket is a symbol of this design philosophy. During the third round of the 2006 Ford Championship at Doral, Mickelson gave $200 to a spectator after his wayward tee shot at the par-5 10th broke the man's watch.
Mickelson has also shown other signs of appreciation. In 2007, after hearing the story of retired NFL player Conrad Dobler and his family on ESPN explaining their struggles to pay medical bills, Mickelson volunteered to pay for Conrad's daughter Holli's college education at Miami University in Ohio.

The next day Mickelson announced that he would not be competing in the third FedEx Cup playoff event. Mickelson has spent over 550 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Rankings, the most by anyone not ranked number one.
In a recent Men's Vogue article, Mickelson recounted his effort to lose 20 pounds with the help of sports trainer Sean Cochran. "Once the younger players started to come on tour, he realized that he had to start working out to maintain longevity in his career," Cochran said.[10] Mickelson's regimen consisted of increasing flexibility and power, eating five smaller meals a day, aerobic training, and carrying his own golf bag.
Mickelson, paired with Tiger Woods, struggled mightily at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. He even notched a quadruple bogey.
He won for the first time in 2009 by defending his title at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club. He finished one stroke ahead of Steve Stricker. It was Mickelson's 35th win on tour, allowing him to surpass Vijay Singh for all time wins at the current time on the PGA Tour. It is difficult to deny that Valentino in his long career has created some of the most sophisticated dresses to be seen and worn, particularly for the evening, the time of the day in which his flamboyant and opulent style has expressed itself at the best. However, when it comes to considering the general output of his work, and its relevance in the history of fashion, it must also be admitted that things change. Compared to the influence and innovations of such great masters as Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and ultimately Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino's style can be seen as much more conservative and fixed. His concept of elegance and beauty is basically an exercise in glamour for the sake of glamour itself. Inventive as it may be, it lacks the modernity, the conceptual depth, and the daring spirit that has marked the work of the above mentioned designers, particularly that of the most influential of his contemporaries (and in general the most influential post war designer), Yves Saint Laurent. When one looks retrospectively to his collections, (and the recent celebration in Rome is an occasion to do this) it is possible to see clearly that he has always designed thinking only and exclusively for women of the so-called jet set, the vacuous and glittering world of the great socialites, about which he always had a particular craving. The Italian designer has never translated the Zeitgeist into his fashion, remaining constantly hooked to the more abstract imperative of a glamourized concept of femmininity. In this sense, there are no sociological traces to be found in his creations, as there are in the collections of the four French masters or, more recently, in those of Jean Paul Gaultier and Gianni Versace, two of the most acute interpreters of fashion as a mirror reflecting social and cultural changes. All of Valentino's talent has been put at the service of a romanticised notion of what the upper crust of society is, and consequently, of how a women belonging to it must dress and behave. This woman is more the fabrication of Hollywood in the 30s-40s; the main limitation of Valentino's work is that it is fundamentally tied to the period of the mythical stars such as Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Merle Oberon and Joan Crawford). The company was begun as Fratelli Prada ( English: Prada Brothers ) by Mario Prada in 1913 as a leathergoods shop in Milan, Italy. Mario Prada did not believe in women interaction within business, and so he prevented female family members from entering into his workshop. Miuccia inherited the company in 1978 by which time sales were up to $450,000 USD. With Bertelli alongside her as business manager, Miuccia was allowed time to implement for total mind onto design. She would go on to incorporate her ideas into the House of Prada that would transform it into a label of renown. She released her first set of backpacks and totes in 1979. They were made out of a tough military spec black nylon that her grandfather had used as coverings for his steamer trunks. Initial success was not instant, as they were hard to sell due to the lack of advertising and high-prices, but the lines would go on to become her first commercial hit. Next, Miuccia and Bertelli sought out wholesale accounts for the bags in upscale department stores and boutiques worldwide. In 1983, Prada opened a second boutique in Millan reminiscent to the original shop, but with a sleek and modern contrast to it. It was opened in the historic and upscale shopping district of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
The next year, Prada released its nylon tote. That same year, the House of Prada began expansion across continental Europe by opening locations in prominent shopping districts within Florence, Paris, Madrid, and New York City. A shoe line was also released in 1984. Miuccia released the classic Prada handbag in 1985, that went on to become an overnight sensation. It was practical and fashionable, functional and sturdy. In 1987, Miuccia and Bertelli married. Prada launched its women's ready-to-wear collection in 1989, and the designs came to be known for their dropped waistlines and narrow belts. Prada's popularity skyrocketed when the fashion world took notice of its clean lines, opulent fabrics, and basic colors. Time described the apparel as "unassertive, combining traditional good manners and an ultramodern industrial sleekness." Truly, the designs to come out of the House of Prada reflected feminine worker aesthetic which made it quite unique in contrast to other high-fashion brands. It would be identified with as for the affluent working women who held demanding jobs identified with it." Thus, it is no surprise that Miuccia herself took it upon herself to call her women's outfits as "uniforms."

The logo for the label, the Prada silver-and black triangle, was not the main design element unlike other prominent luxury brands the likes of Louis Vuitton. And its appeal, including the apparel, were taken as "anti-status" or "reverse snobbery."

Kenzo's love for fashion developed at an early age, particularly through reading his sisters' magazines. He shortly attended the University of Kobe, where he felt bored and eventually withdrew, against the will of his family . In 1958, he joined a fashion school, Tokyo's Bunka Fashion College, which had then just opened its doors to male students.
After earning his diploma, he settled in Paris in 1964. He was trying to gain a place in the fashion environment; attending shows, making contacts with the media and selling sketches.
Kenzo's first designs started because he could only afford to buy his fabrics from flea sales. most of these fabrics were scraps, the remains of grandmothers sewing baskets. As a result, Kenzo had to mix many bold fabrics together to make one garment.

Elbaz, an Israeli citizen, was born in Casablanca, Morocco. When he was 10 years old, Alber, two brothers, two sisters and their Jewish parents immigrated to Israel from Morocco. After mandatory military service in the Israeli Defence Forces, he studied at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design (as it is known today) in Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv, Israel, 1982-86.
In 1987, he moved to New York City, worked for two years for a manufacturer of mother-of-the-bride clothing. Eventually, he went on to work for Geoffrey Beene for seven years. He claims to have benefited appreciably from his time with Beene, influenced by Beene's rejection of trends and masterful drape and fit. "It was a very beautiful relationship... Our best dialogue was not in words," Elbaz has reminisced (Suzy Menkes, International Herald Tribune, May 24, 2005).
In 1997, Elbaz left Beene and, through retailer Dawn Mello, was hired by the firm of Guy Laroche. But, by the time of Elbaz's arrival, the Laroche enterprise had become overly conservative and lackluster. Even so, Elbaz was able to update the collection and somewhat enhance the image of the firm, whose activities at the time included the management of 15 boutiques and 70 license agreements worldwide. However, he departed within a year, 1998, and began designing ready-to-wear women's clothing for Yves Saint-Laurent, because Saint-Laurent himself wished to withdraw from his hands-on design of prêt-à-porter. In the position, Elbaz's talent was recognized, and he would have become the head designer of the house when Saint-Larent retired. This was not to happen because the Gucci Group purchased YSL Rive Gauche, the ready-to-wear label, and, hence, Gucci design director Tom Ford dismissed Elbaz after 3 collections.

After Krizia and in October 2001, he was appointed artistic director of Lanvin in Paris. Lanvin is the oldest extant fashion house worldwide, having been founded by Jeanne Lanvin, who began making dresses in 1909 and millinery earlier. In August 2001, the company had been purchased by investor group Harmonie S.A., led by Mrs. Shaw-Lan Wang, a Taiwanese media magnate, who hired Elbaz. 2006, Elbaz introduced new packaging for the fashion house, featuring a light forget-me-not blue color, a favorite shade which Lanvin purportedly had seen in a Fra Angelico fresco. There are shopping bags, imprinted with Paul Iribe's 1907 illustration of Lanvin and her daughter Marguerite, and new shoe boxes much like antique library files, tied with black ribbons, to emphasize the precious nature of the product.

In 1985, in his book, Couture: The Great Fashion Designers, Caroline Rennolds Milbank wrote, "The most consistently celebrated and influential designer of the past twenty-five years, Yves Saint Laurent can be credited with both spurring the couture's rise from its Sixties ashes and with finally rendering ready-to-wear reputable".The son of an insurance company president, Yves Saint Laurent was born on August 1, 1936 in Oran, in what was then French Algeria. Saint Laurent left home at the age of 17 to work for the French designer Christian Dior. Following Dior's death in 1957, Yves, at the age of 22, was put in charge of the effort of saving the Dior house from financial ruin. Shortly after this success, he was conscripted to serve in the French army during the Algerian War of Independence. After 20 days, the stress of being hazed by fellow soldiers, led the fragile Saint Laurent to be institutionalized in a French mental hospital, where he underwent psychiatric treatment, including electroshock therapy, for a nervous breakdown.
In 1962, in the wake of his nervous breakdown, Saint Laurent was released from Dior and started his own label, YSL, financed by his companion, Pierre Bergé. She won two national titles in 1989 and 1990 and one junior world title in 1988 as a pairs skater with Rudy Galindo. In December 2005, she was inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame. Yamaguchi was a local commentator on figure skating for San Francisco-area TV station KNTV during the 2006 Winter Olympics.
On May 20, 2008, Yamaguchi became the celebrity champion in the sixth season of Dancing with the Stars with pro dance partner Mark Ballas, defeating finalist couple Jason Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska. The judges commented that she was the most consistent competitor of all the dancers in every season and according to the host of the show, she had the highest scores of any competitor in the show's history.
Yamaguchi is the 2008 season winner on ABC is reality program Dancing with the Stars 6th season paired with Mark Ballas. In the first three weeks, they received scores of 9, 9, and 9 for a total of 27 for their Foxtrot, Mambo and Tango. This was the highest first and third week score in the show's history.
During the fourth week, she received 10, 9, and 10 to have a total of 29, and the fifth week she received 9, 10, and 10 of having another total of 29 on the Paso Doble & Rumba. On her April 21 performance she received a perfect 30 score from the judges for her Jive. This makes her holding the 1st place spot for 6 weeks in a row, which is a new record on the show. During the seventh week, she didn't come in first. She received a 26 out of 30 for her Viennese Waltz which the judges gave her 9, 8, and 9 which gives her first 8 ever given, and her Cha-Cha-Cha was a 28 out of 30. The judges gave her 10, 8, and 10. Yamaguchi ended up with a fifty-four out of sixty which put her in second, her first time not being first on the judge's leaderboard. On the eighth week of competition, they received a 29 out of 30 as the judges scored 9, 10, and 10 for their quickstep and 26 out of 30 for their sassy samba with the judges scored them for 8,9, and 9. In the ninth week of competition, Kristi got her "top spot" back after two weeks. On the Tango, the judges gave her a 29 and on the Jive, 28. On the tenth week of the competition (finals), she received the highest score once again, breaking the tie with Mario Lopez for the most times a celebrity placed first place. On her "Mambo and Hip Hop" mesh Freestyle to Michael Jackson's Working Day and Night, the judges gave her a perfect 30, her first since her Jive in Week 6. And on her Cha-Cha, she received another 30. She received all but one of the perfect 30s awarded in that season (Jason Taylor's finale dance being the other). The Cha-Cha was danced back-to-back for the finals.
Kristi Yamaguchi received the Inspiration Award at the 2008 Asian Excellence Awards. Two days after her Dancing with the Stars champion crowning, she received the 2008 Sonja Henie Award from the Professional Skaters Association. Among her others awards are the Thurman Munson Award, Women's Sports Foundation Flo Hyman Award, and the Great Sports Legends Awards. She is also a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee Olympic Hall of Fame, World Skating Hall of Fame, and the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
Mark Alexander Corky Ballas (age 21) was born May 24, 1986 in Houston, Texas. He is a professional ballroom dancer on the ABC program Dancing with the Stars. At a young age he moved to London, England, where he began his performing career. His parents are Corky Ballas and Shirley Ballas.
On the 5th season of Dancing With The Stars, Ballas was paired up with Cheetah Girls star Sabrina Bryan. On October 30, 2007, the pair was voted off the show. The announcement was met with shock from the judges and the live audience. An AOL poll voted their elimination "2007's most shocking TV moment." The next week, the remaining dancers and celebrities showed their continued support and affection for Bryan by donning her signature cheetah paw-print tattoo. For the second-to-last week, Bryan and Ballas were invited back to the show to perform, another first for any couple.
After weeks of speculation among the fans and entertainment news of a budding romance between him and his DWTS partner, just a week after they were taken off the show on November 5, 2007, Sabrina Bryan, in an interview with TV Guide, admitted that she and Ballas are dating. Ballas was incorrectly quoted by UsWeekly saying she was "too busy for him", however he retracted his statement on his myspace saying he was taken "completely out of context". Later, the magazine edited the article to include that he retracted his statement.
It was announced, Ballas' partner for Season 6 of Dancing with the Stars is Olympic Gold Medal winning figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. In the first week, Kristi and Mark received a 27 out of 30 for their foxtrot, the highest score to be received on the first week in the entire series. Together, they continued to top the leaderboard for 6 weeks straight, a new record on DWTS. However, they came in 2nd in the 7th and 8th week of competition, ending their streak. Kristi and Mark were top of the leaderboard for 8 of the 10 weeks of competition, a new DWTS record. They also mantained the highest average as of Week 10 with a 28.3 average including a perfect 90/90 score for the finale, both DWTS records. Kristi and Mark's lowest score, a 26, was also the highest "low" score ever for any contestant throughout the seasons. On May 20, 2008 Ballas and Yamaguchi won the 2008 Season of Dancing with the Stars. According to the judges, they had set the standard for the entire season and were the most consistent couple not only in Season 6, but in all the seasons of DWTS. Kristi and Mark have commented that they would like to perform on the winter DWTS tour if asked.
