So I went to go see 500 Days of Summer tonight, and it was pretty depressing. So, all this evening I've been trying to come up with the shortest saddest pieces of ideas I can think of. Here we go:

I never realized how much of the development was pushed along because of the cold war, or that without the threat of a neuclear attack, we might be using radio waves instead of fiber or copper links for the internet's backbones.

Vimeo still has not stopped amazing me with the quality of content they have. Much better than the You-Tubes.

So, now that I'm done with school and the radio station for a little while, I've decide to work on the website some. I'm paying for it after all. It might as well work.

I followed a great tutorial I found pretty closely, and I got the bird vector images from here. I've just mocked it up in photoshop for now. Hopefully I'll have it fleshed out in HTML/css by tomorrow, and posted shortly thereafter. If you want to check out the full layout, you can see it here. Let me know what you think!

New Years Resolutions

So 2009 is here (and has been for a few weeks now), and I've decided it's time to get cracking on my New Years resolutions. They are really goals that I'm going to work on rather than things to improve on, but I mean... I do what I want... it's my body.

Here we go:

Get into business school - I'm graduating from Georgia Tech in the Spring of 2010 and I've decided I want to go for my MBA. I'm not sure I'm going to be get into the schools I want without more work experience, but I've got close to two years of internships under my belt so I'm excited. GMAT classes here I come!
Create a Portfolio of my Development Work - I'm going to start working on a body of work to show off my skill(s|z) as a software developer. This will be good if I end up working before business school. Or, even if I do end up getting in, latter down the road with my very lucrative internet start ups (scootbook.com). I'm still trying to come up with project ideas for this, so let me know if you think of anything. I might try to make a lightweight web server in C and maybe a web app.
Adopt a Puppy - I've been talking about it for a while, but I'm going to adopt a puppy from the humane society in March when my job as General Manager of WREK is over. I'm pretty psyched about it.

I'm thinking this should be a good year. Hell, I might even go on a date...

Don't blame me for being optimistic.

So, because of finals and everything else going on, I didn't actually get to the experiment I talked about last week. I'm thinking I'll have to pick it up the week after finals, when I'll have time after work. The only real creative thing I got was this:

Creative Bouancy

Lawrence Lessig,one of the founding board members of Creative Commons, gave a speech a few years back about Read/Write societies vs. Read Only societies (it's over an hour and a half so I haven't watched the whole thing yet.) In the speech he argues that we live in a Read Only society, where the culture is created by an elite group, and then consumed by everyone else. He goes on to talk about what changes to the copyright laws could be changed to encourage more creativity, but on a personal level I really like the idea of leading a balenced Read/Write live.

To actually try this out, I've decided to try to go a week where I spend at least the same amount of time creating as I do consuming. So, for every hour of tv I watch, every book or blog entry I read, I'm going to spend the same amount of time writing, working on projects, etc... I'm going to track the time over the week and post it, so everyone can keep me honest, and I'll be sure to put up any fruits of my labor. This is the week before my finals, though, so I may not have a whole lot of time to consume or create.

At any rate, if anyone has any project ideas or wants to try it too, let me know!

Non-Google Web Apps I use alot (and you should too?)

So between using my desktop, my old laptop, my ipod, and computers at work/campus, I've found it's much easier to do most things using we applications so that I can get to everything from wherever. Everyone knows about Google Mail/Calendar/Docs/Reader/Shower, but there's some non Google sites I've found for some of the things gmail can't do.

Remember the Milk - This really isn't anything more than a todo list, but there is a gadget to add it in to Gmail/Google calendar (you have to enable gadgets in the Labs menu) and it syncs with Ipod Touch/Iphones. The interface is a little clunky, but I haven't found anything keeps my tasks synced arcoss everywhere I need them.

Mint - Mint.com helps you handle all of you personal finances, grabbing information from your bank accounts and credit cards and putting it together to help you manage your spending. It's got alot of nice budgeting features and tells you how much your spending in different categories each month, as well as alot of fancy JavaScript eye candy. I've read alot of reviews about how great the service is, and it seems to be very secure.
Mind Miester - If you've ever had trouble remembering details for projects or keeping your ideas organized, brain maps are a great way to keep track of things. Mind Miester is an online brain mapping application that is very easy to use. The interface is fast and intuitive, and there are alot of keyboard shortcuts. The free account lets you keep up to 6 maps, which seems to be plenty.

Nither mint.com or mind miester offer ipod application yet, but I've found that I've never really needed them, as I tend not to work on my budget during class. Let me know if you found anything online that makes your life easier.

Trey's Guide: Giving Bad News

It's never easy to give bad news, there's all the emotions and tears and other mucuses to deal with... yuck. Luckily, it always helps to cut the sorrow of bad news with a little bit of humor. I've found that by writing the bad news in the form of a letter, running it through an online translator, and then translating it back in to English, you can still get the news across, but in a comical way.

Here's an example going from English to Japanese and back:

In these troubled times of economic rig-a-ma-rolls, polito-spastic news cycles, and climate cycle change-abouts (made up hyphenated words make me seem quirky right?), I've decided I'm going to start publishing some of the wisdom I've collected over the years in to easily digestible blog posts. Ready, set, Consume!

Trey's Guide to Meditation:

I've found a bunch about meditation already online, however most of it seems to be written for pansies. Also, none of them really seem to encompus the method I use to relax. By following my simple steps, you should be able to completely forget about everything that has stressed you in your life.

Make sure your room is almost completely sound-proof (limiting ambient noise to about 15-25dB). The chamber I use can be found here.
You can not relax with your pants on. I debated weither or not to add this to the guid, as it is completely obvious, but I have no way of knowing the kind of characters that read this thing.
You may cross your legs, but I recommend against it, because man-up. Whatever you decide however, and this is important for men and women alike, dont' sit on your own balls. This will have very detrimintal effects on your relaxation.
As you begin to meditate, try to clear all thoughts from you mind. You may, however, find random thoughts creeping into you consciousness. I find it helpful to imagine you are firing a large rocket at your thoughts and having them be violently obliterated. It is perfectly acceptable to make sound effects with your mouth if you so choose.
As time passes, and the voices in your head have been repressed for a while, you will notice that they will begin to all scream very loudly and merge in to one orange ball of fury in your mind. You are now in your most relaxed state.
You should regain consiousness within two to three days. It is normal to wake up in a location diffrent that you remeber, possibly with several small animals laying dead around you. You should always meditate with a cell phone in your pocket so that you can have a friend find you to bring you home.

I've found that if you run through these simple steps several times a week, not only will you feel more relaxed, but you will be also have a false since of wisdom that will allow you to write helpful articles on the internet.

So, I've been wanting to do this for a while now, but I think I'm going to make a WREK logo out of LED's. The dimensions for the board are about the same as the old smaller WREK logo stickers. Getting the circuit board fabricated and the parts should run about $60 and it should take about 3 to 4 weeks to get it all together. Let me know if you want one.

So I found this good article about riding your bike on the road in traffic. It's a quick read but it's good stuff, especially if you're biking in Atlanta.

Also, I built a "bike light" (I use the quotations because its about twice as big and half as bright as it should be to be useful) with my Arduino. It's got 3 modes: All On, Blink, and Wave. There's even a button to advance through the modes, so yeah, who's cool now?

Someone has also come out with a cheap touchscreen/oled kit to use with the board so I might have to come up with a project to use one of those. If your interested in getting started with electronics or micro controllers as a hobby, I'd definitely go with an Arduino over jumping straight into something like a PIC. There's tons of tutorials and cool projects you can do for not too expensive.

I've definitly been nerding out today.

Ok, so I thought the LHC would have destroyed the world by now, but it's down for maintenance, so I guess I'll need to start keeping up with my presence on the web again.

UPDATES!!!:

I've been riding my bike and working out alot latley, so be careful. I had to register my calfs with the ATF.
I've started back with my record collecting. Added 2 Earl Scruggs Albums, 2 CCR Albums, a Sun Ra Album, and a Parliment album as well as 3 7"s for less that $50. Wax and Fax and Full Moon Records have great selections if your ever interested. Used vynal is GO!
My second batch of St. Aubrey's Ale has finished conditioning. It came out ok, but one of the intgredients seem to be a little overpowering all the way through to the finish. On the drinkablilty scale, it's definitly lower than most other brown ales. Stop by the Bellemeade some day if you'd like to try one.

Fall is here, and the weather has been great (which is good because our air conditioner broke). I'm gonna go sit out in the front yard.

Why I love (and hate) my computer science homework

Hohkay, so, this week for my Systems and Networks class I have to create the control logic for a processor they gave us in a circuit simulator program. Now while this is not the easiest assignment in the world, the overall idea is definitely not unreasonable. The problem comes in when the circuit simulation software we use in only used in education and has no users in any kind of industry, so it's buggy as all get out. The "program" we are writing for the processor (it's basically just a list of states in a finite state machine) has to be written in a language created just for this homework assigment so the compiler we have to use is about as robust as a house of cards. It tends to crap out if you don't hit enter the secert magic number of times that it wants you to.

The thing is, while you end up spending more time learning to use the buggy tools instead of working on the real objective of the project, you really end up getting a feel for what working on these kinds of projects is like in the real world. Unless you're doing something really boring that has been done many times before, you are going to spend most of your time troubleshooting the bugs in others peoples code your having to work with, or working around arbitrary constraints. I guess that's any technical professions though.

At any rate, sorry for the big lapse in posts, I've been pretty busy with live latley. I'll start trying to have some less computer sciencey things in the future.

I don't even care if I haven't had a real post in a while, this is the coolest thing I've ever seen
