Taking your pet on holiday outside of the UK is now much easier to arrange than it was in the past. However there are still some rules in place - so pay attention!

The good news is that pets no longer have to undergo a mandatory quarantine on re-entry to the UK. As long as your pet is resident in the UK or another qualifying country, they should be eligible for Defra's pet travel scheme.

To qualify for the pet travel scheme your pet must be microchipped so it can be identified easily. It must be treated for tics and tapeworms and most importantly it must be vaccinated against rabies. This involves an injection and a follow-up blood test to check the vaccine has worked.

Upon joining the pet travel scheme and provided it lives in the EU, your pet will receive a pet passport. If your pet is from outside the EU then a veterinary certificate must be issued to show the meet meets the requirements for entry.
