The first year of competition saw Fordâs Mustang, in relatively modest form, win the championship over some very tough Chrysler competition. The â67 Trans-Am season would prove just as difficult for Ford and the pseudo-factory-supported Shelby team, not only due to Chevroletâs new Camaro entry but also because of in-house competition from sister-division Mercuryâs Cougar. In the end, Mustang prevailed again, but a pitched battle with the factory Bud Moore Cougars wasnât settled until the last race of the series. The Penske Camaro team was advancing so rapidly that Ford made dramatic changes to its program in the off-season in an attempt to stay ahead of the game for 1968. Bob would probably strap a pulsejet onto anything, including himself. As a matter of fact, he was the first thing he strapped to a pulsejet. In the late â90s, Bob competed in tracking contests, which is a form of skydiving where jumpers try to cover as much horizontal ground as possible. During one jump, Bobâs friend just kept pulling away from him. Thatâs when Bob thought, I need a jet engine on my chest. When he reached the ground, Bob decided his jet-powered-human idea wasnât totally nuts, so he began researching jet propulsion. Turbines were far too expensive, but he soon rediscovered pulsejets, which had fascinated him as a teenager when he found an article with a cutaway of a WWII V1 âbuzzbomb.â Bob built a prototype and parachuted with it but never fired it. His first version would have had to be ignited in the plane, and he knew it wasnât a good idea to bring a flamethrower onto a Cessna. We couldnât help but ask him if an image of Wile E. Coyote ever popped into his head. âWile E. Coyote has always been my hero,â he says.
