Students of the SCCAâs famed Trans-American Sedan series know how quickly it evolved from infancy in 1966 through the glory days of the â70 season. The first year of competition saw Fordâs Mustang, in relatively modest form, win the championship over some very tough Chrysler competition. The â67 Trans-Am season would prove just as difficult for Ford and the pseudo-factory-supported Shelby team, not only due to Chevroletâs new Camaro entry but also because of in-house competition from sister-division Mercuryâs Cougar. In the end, Mustang prevailed again, but a pitched battle with the factory Bud Moore Cougars wasnât settled until the last race of the series. The Penske Camaro team was advancing so rapidly that Ford made dramatic changes to its program in the off-season in an attempt to stay ahead of the game for 1968. That ended up quite different than expected.

As we're sure you're well aware, the 2013 HOT ROD Power Tour is ready to launch. This year, the HOT ROD Power Tour begins on Saturday, June 1 in Arlington, Texas. Finally, the tour ends in Chattanooga, Tennessee on June 6. However, along the way, the HOT ROD Power Tour is making a ton of stops along the way and may even be in your backyard or local fairground. To assure you've got all you need to make sure you don't miss out on this year's tour, we've provided the entire 2013 HOT ROD Power Tour dates and cities as well as the daily route. Below in an easy-to-download PDF form, HERE. (For Google Chrome users, right click and "save as" to save this PDF.)

More importantly, these schedules are subject to change up to the day the route is driven. Updates will be made available through HOTROD.com, as well as revised directions communicated only if necessary at each morning driversâ meeting.

Unless you've been cast away on a desert island, you're aware that Ford's current performance standard-bearer is the '11-and-later Mustang TVI-VCT 5.0L V8 that's commonly called the Coyote.
Unless you've been cast away on a desert island, you're aware that Ford's current performance standard-bearer is the '11-and-later Mustang TI-VCT (Twin Independent, Variable Camshaft Timing) 5.0L V8 that's commonly called the Coyote. The 412hp engine is currently the standard Mustang V8âno more SOHC two- or three-valve base motors. Before long, the new 5.0Ls will be all over the wrecking yards, but in the meantime, Ford Racing Performance Parts (FRPP) and savvy aftermarket companies are already full speed ahead. Not only does FRPP offer a bunch of crate enginesâincluding supercharged and high-output versionsâbut it also has a range of add-on kits to simplify retrofitment. And what Ford doesn't have, the aftermarket doesâor soon will.

A major hurdle when dropping your hot rod flat on the tarmac is packaging the adjustable suspension components within the confines of the sheetmetal, especially in the rear.
A major hurdle when dropping your hot rod flat on the tarmac is packaging the adjustable suspension components within the confines of the sheetmetal, especially in the rear. Mount the airbags above the axle, and your hot rod will knock the fillings out of your teeth on rough stretches of road. Move the bags ahead of the axle and closer to the suspension pivot points, and you gain a mechanical advantage, which results in less air pressure needed to suspend the vehicle and a softer ride. Larger airbags also require less air pressure than smaller bags to carry the same amount of weight, but you can only upsize the bags so much before you run out of space to mount them. A cantilever-style suspension is the plush-riding, space-saving answer.

From right to left in the main picture, thereâs a pulsejet-powered bicycle; an under-construction, pulsejet-powered land-speed racer; two pulsejets on test stands in the background; and a skateboard in the front that, wellâat this point, you get the idea. Bob would probably strap a pulsejet onto anything, including himself. As a matter of fact, he was the first thing he strapped to a pulsejet. In the late â90s, Bob competed in tracking contests, which is a form of skydiving where jumpers try to cover as much horizontal ground as possible. During one jump, Bobâs friend just kept pulling away from him. Thatâs when Bob thought, I need a jet engine on my chest. When he reached the ground, Bob decided his jet-powered-human idea wasnât totally nuts, so he began researching jet propulsion. Turbines were far too expensive, but he soon rediscovered pulsejets, which had fascinated him as a teenager when he found an article with a cutaway of a WWII V1 âbuzzbomb.â Bob built a prototype and parachuted with it but never fired it. His first version would have had to be ignited in the plane, and he knew it wasnât a good idea to bring a flamethrower onto a Cessna. We couldnât help but ask him if an image of Wile E. Coyote ever popped into his head. âWile E. Coyote has always been my hero,â he says. Sure enough, upon visiting his home, we discovered a painting that Bob had done of Wile E. himself, complete with some Acme-branded thrust.

My most predominant gripe lately has been about the belabored march of the nostalgia trend; I love retro and I'm super annoyed it's not special anymore.

A dozen years ago, youâd spot a true traditional car in a sea of billet rods and it gave you a shot of adrenaline. Today, nostalgia cars are as predictable as the billet rods and red â69 Camaros they fought to upstage. I want to be thrilled by them again.

Steve Strope is a storyteller. Before the Pure Vision owner (PureVisionDesign.com) even builds a car, he tells its story in his head. This almost always involves a hypothetical mashup of eras, body styles, and racing design ethics, all juxtaposed in a way that would have never occurred in nature. What if the European Martini Racing rally team had a conversation with Ford during the freewheeling racing days of the â60s? What if Fordâs feud back then were not with Ferrari but Porsche? Instead of building the GT40, perhaps Ford would have built a first-gen Mustang to go kick Porscheâs butt in their own territory. Maybe someone like Fordâs racing mastermind Fran Hernandez would have connected some dots, building a rally car powered by Fordâs DOHC Indy engine. Enter the â66 T-5R Martini Mustang.
