In 1915, years after the racing exploits that launched both of their careers, Henry Ford and Barney Oldfield happened to meet again. As they shook hands, Ford, by then among the world's richest men, gave his former driver a wink and generously remarked that he reckoned the two of them had made each other. Oldfield winked right back and said, "I guess I did the better job of it."

Photo Gallery: 50th Anniversary - Carroll Shelby, Hot Rodder - Hot Rod Magazine

Photo Gallery: 50th Anniversary - Carroll Shelby, Hot Rodder - Hot Rod Magazine

50th Anniversary - Carroll Shelby, Hot Rodder |

He was 89.
One of the most iconic names in automotive history, Shelby became an international star in the 1950s as a race car driver, earning Sports Illustrated's "Sports Car Driver of the Year" honors in 1956 and 1957, then winning the 1959 24 Hours of LeMans in an Aston Martin with co-driver Roy Salvadori. A hereditary heart condition put an end to Shelby's driving career in 1960, but the lessons learned while driving world-renowned sports cars gave him the idea to build his own car using an AC Ace body and a small-block Ford V-8 engine. The result was the Cobra, a name that Shelby said came to him in a dream, and a company called Shelby American.

Photo Gallery: Carroll Shelby: 1923-2012 - Hot Rod Magazine

Carroll Shelby: 1923-2012 |

Ryan Adams of Santa Ana, California, has owned this old Ford since 2000. His buddy Dano Nichols found it in Riverside, California, where it was languishing in a sorry state after serving as a dirt-track car. We don’t know how long this poor soul was beaten and battered in side-by-side racing before it was finally put out to pasture, and we can only imagine how thrashed the body was back then, but since it was real, 70-year-old Ford steel for only $1,500, we can use our imaginations. Its scarred past is long behind it now, however. Seven years in the making and five years after it was completed, this ’28/’29 Model A proves that a hot rod built right will never go out of style.

Photo Gallery: Ryan Adams' 1928/1929 Ford Model A - Bombshell in Blue - HOT ROD Magazine

Bombshell In Blue |

"The tank actually started the project," confesses Eddie Barbosa from Gilroy, California. For weeks, he'd been eyeballing a half-derelict '48 Allis-Chalmers tractor that was decomposing in a field. Then one day he figured he'd give it a shot and try to get the property owner to sell him just the gas tank. "I kept looking at it thinking, That would look too cool on the back of something." That something would eventually become a noteworthy conversation piece on this '29 Ford roadster pickup.

Photo Gallery: Eddie Barbosa's 1929 Ford Roadster Pickup - The True RPU - HOT ROD Deluxe Magazine

Photo Gallery: Eddie Barbosa's 1929 Ford Roadster Pickup - The True RPU - HOT ROD Deluxe Magazine

1929 Ford Roadster Pickup - The True RPU |

While open to the public by appointment only, it's filled with Vic's personal collection -- cars and motorcycles we grew up reading about in magazines and posters on our walls. It's a showcase of Edelbrock's past and present, like a '67 Camaro that one of the first off the production line and was even used as an early HOT ROD test vehicle. It was the first in California and also the first Camaro to be road tested for print media. There are motorcycles, late-model cars, race cars, and a bunch of memorabilia on the walls. The Theme for This Build Could Be Less is More.
CONSISTENCY. In the realm of custom creations, there are plenty of hits and misses. When reshaping the already beautiful silhouette inherent to most vintage steel, it’s easy to disrupt the essential flow and harmony of the factory lines. We’re not all Harley Earl. Even the big names have their off designs, but some have a better batting average than others. Swinging his way up to the top of the pool for consistency in elegance and style is John D’Agostino. The man has left a trail of customs to be envied: Midnight Sensation, Golden Sunrise, Royal Tahitian, Gable, Golden Star, Marilyn, and Stardust to name a few of our favorites. The list speaks for itself. If those names aren’t familiar, you’re not into customs.

Photo Gallery: 1961 Olds Starfire - The Aladdin - HOT ROD Deluxe Magazine

Photo Gallery: 1961 Olds Starfire - The Aladdin - HOT ROD Deluxe Magazine

1961 Olds Starfire - The Aladdin |

Not only do turbos harness otherwise wasted exhaust energy to drive the compressor, their modular nature lets compressor and turbine housings and wheels be mixed and matched within a given turbo frame size to optimize the unit for a particular application. But this level of choice can also be daunting, introducing complexity somewhat akin to selecting the best cam for a normally aspirated motor.

Photo Gallery: How To Buy Your First Turbo - Hot Rod Magazine

How To Buy Your First Turbo |

It’s loud, it uses a Harley V-twin, it has no top, radio, A/C, or heat, and it handles. Built by JR Drake, owner of Kick Ass Rod Shop in Hickory, North Carolina, this little roadster started as a Downs Industries fiberglass body that JR and crew cut 4 inches all the way around. “It’s basically a Sportster on four wheels,” says JR, who used a ’99 1,200cc H-D Sportster engine and trans to power the roadster. He modified a transfer case out of a Legends race car (which uses an import motorcycle engine) to accept the Harley beltdrive. The transfer case runs a driveshaft to a Toyota rearend that resides in a homemade four-link. All the controls work like those on a normal car (the only difference is the driver merely has to bump the column shifter to change gears, similar to a foot lever on a bike), and making the linkages work right was the hardest part of the build. The chassis was also handbuilt. JR says it’s hard to keep up with him on North Carolina mountain roads.

Hardley A Roadster |

The downer is that guys fear the complexity and cost of adding a turbo or blower. Paxton solved that with the easiest and most affordable centrifugal huffer system we've seen: the Entry Level Universal Supercharger kit. For carbureted small-block Fords, these sell at Summit Racing for $2,359.95 in a satin finish (PN 1001864SL) or polished for $2,819.99 (PN 1001864SL-P). There are also setups for small- and big-block Mopars at slightly higher prices.
