Stop Being an Idiot Twitter User

I am not even the smartest man I knew, but I still have some common sense that makes me think before believing anything as a truth.

This evening, while the shamefulness of the #blametheIslam keyword is trending on Twitter, I noticed lots of retweets from my followers regarding a tweet from another Malaysia saying that Justin Bieber is racist and he posted a couple of links for this unsubstantiated claimed.

The first one was from a blog post of Justin Bieber Bashes Islam:

And the second link was from Yahoo Answers:

Notice how similar the posts from both sites are? That is because both articles are from the same source!

I was a little bit offended by all these vicious lies and thus, asked the person who posted the links on Twitter at the first place, while questioning him two simple questions:

1. Where is the link from the claimed post of Daily Star (A British tabloid for God’s sake, do you really telling me that you believe them all?)
2. Why this issue is only coming up after 10 months of both posts up on the Internet? (blog post on 21st September 2010 and the Yahoo Answers from 10 months back)

Then, I did a simple Google search with keywords “Daily Star Justin Bieber” and it didn’t show the claimed article. Trust me, if Justin Bieber really said a statement that “Why can't Islam be accepting of other people, like Christianity and Judaism?” it will be one of the top post of that come out in the Google online search.

For your information, I am not even a Justin Bieber’s fan. No offense, his music is radio friendly and all, but it’s just not one of my musical preferences.

This incident reminded me back when #RIPJackieChan was trending on Twitter worldwide. That awkward moment after you had posted some tearful tweets offering condolences and kind words to Jackie Chan and you realized that Jackie Chan is still kicking and alive.

Still, I was not jumping on the bandwagon at that time. After a quick Google search, you will stumble upon the truth that many were blinded by. I even Googled “Amy Winehouse” just to make sure that she’s really dead; such a lost in the British music industry, but that will be in a different post.

Anyway, my sincere advise to all Twitter users, stop retweet malicious news so easily. With a simple Google search you will find the truth. Stealing from the wisdom of Johannes Sebastian Bach, “if I decide to be an idiot, then I’ll be an idiot on my own record.” Don’t let others who might even have ulterior motive to be fooled you.

In Malay, there is saying, "sudah terhantuk baru terngadah" meaning, you're only realized your mistake after you had done one. Stop being an idiot Twitter user, please!

A Victory Post

So, today I come to office early and start to type a post for my blog.

Yes, it has indeed been a while; I was gravely caught up with my works more than I predicted. I am like a working machine, but with a stomach and mouth full with ulcers (literally).

Anyway, my first financial year has officially over as June came to an end, which means my blog deserved a victory post. More post will come later!

Apart from the usual slaving hours working, I managed to squeeze my time by joining couples of programs; volunteering for the mangrove planting program at Port Dickson, joining our company’s family day and participating in the #twtupkaseh; a charity event for the orphanage at Kg. Melayu Subang and Kuah, Rawang. All will be explained in excruciating details later.

A post to kick off a new week, a new financial year and a new hope of reviving my otherwise dead blog; please be excited as I am!

Top 10 Ways Climbing the Modern Social Ladder

Nowadays climbing up a social ladder is defined by how many friends you have on Facebook, how many followers you have on Twitter, how many blogs you run on the internet, how many birthday wishes you got when your birthday come around. Believe it or not, the times when being popular means you have lots of friends, great attitude and how successful you are in life is now fading over.

Virtual friends are the key to social success and it has been a vicious cycle of backstabbing and sweet talking. Thus, I would like to share with you the tips to become acceptable in this modern society:

1. Pretend to be someone else. If you are just Tom, Dick or Harry this will not take you anywhere. Try pretending to be Donald Trump the President. Be arrogant, be over the top, and be powerful; even if it’s just by pretending to be one.

2. Weirdo is in. Or conventional people called it “sense of individuality”. To achieve it, you must be constantly committed in being a unique person; the easiest way is through fashion. Every time you dress up, ask yourself, “what Lady Gaga would wear?”

3. Participate in all social events; invitation is not really necessary. Especially when it is one of those social networking events. You will gain more followers and friends by attending these events. If you manage to be one of the organizers, it will be a bonus point!

4. Splurge on expensive things. Money can’t buy happiness, but money can buy fake friends and thus buy you popularity that you seek for.

5. Stop working or appear like you are not working. Hanging up late at night with your friends even it’s a weekday. Remember, being popular is not without sacrifice even it is your sleep.

6. Regular doses of emotional breakdown. Try creating an imaginary scene where someone is doing bad things to you and trying expending your make believe story from there. Preferably to do in any of your social networking sites. Nothing screams popular other than superficial breakdown forever noted by your virtual friends.

7. Make yourself superior; always condescending others. It’s all about you. You must have opinions on ever thing that your friends said, lack of one will make you look like a noob (definition of noob: know little and have no will to learn any more).

8. Be good at something. Some people are expert in making jokes, singing, dancing, or when you realized that you are good at nothing, try bitching. People may love you or hate you, but the truth is, they can’t stop talking about you.

9. Everyone is your best friend. (Refer to point 7).

10. Be a yes man. Especially when you are dealing with another person with a higher hierarchy of the social ladder. Be a good follower and perhaps the “Higher” will take you with him to the top.

There you go, Top 10 (should be secrets, thank you) Ways Climbing the Modern Social Ladder. Caution: it might cost you few real friends, extreme fatigue, couples of backstabbing, sweat and tears and few “crazy” muttering by your virtual friends. Don't Deny a Man His Food!

Once again, I am starving. I can’t really speak, let alone eat during these ulcerous days. The beginning of this problem started when I was advised by my panel doctor to use yet another type of mouth wash, this time it was a mouth wash B. I had tried the ‘branded’ mouth wash (you can seek fashion in everything that you buy, even it is from a chemically produced pharmaceutical product) L, O and C, and all their flavors.

The truth is, I had tried B before when I was in high school. The feeling after you use it is very soothing; for your throat and ulcers, but after a few days, small ulcers will pop out everywhere (favorite place is under the tongue). So, when the doctor advised me to try use B, I tried it. Hoping that somehow my antibody and tongue resistance has mutated and thus, the ulcers will not be so easy to occur.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. I had self-proclaimed myself as an Ulcer Man. The ulcers resulted from that are so plenty, it’s hurting me even to swallow food, water or even to speak. This came from a guy who is ‘normally’ have 3-5 ulcers at one time.

Needless to say, I am super hungry and my mind is bursting with ideas that I need to thrash it out. Refraining my desire to speak; not that people understand me anyway, they keep asking me to repeat my words, I chose the other way that I know the best; which is writing. I have been tweeting like crazy these couple of days and writing long posts on blog.

I forgot how much fun is that; writing without knowing whether there is anyone out there is reading your rambling posts. Did people read it, but decide not to comment on it? Or whether people read it and said to themselves “I better not commenting on this blue guy post, he must be having an emotional breakdown or something”. Honestly, at this moment, I do not care; I am just having one of those days where you’re too hungry to pretend to care.

Motto of the day: Do not deny a man his food, do not mess with a hungry man.

P/S: B, L, O and C are the brands of mouth wash. I rather not poke fun with rich pharmaceutical companies; I watched Erin Brockovich and read John Grisham’s novels that they can really be a pain in the ass. Long live consumerism!

There was a point of time when parents reminded their children before they went to sleep that without hard work, your talent will goes to the drain. The time has ended. We are living in the cultural moment when every possible thing can shoot you up to the highest ladder of popularity contest, even for the wrong reason. Take Chipmunk music for example, I for once never thought it will become that successful, maybe I am a conservative person and making fun of people voice is more than an act of distasteful towards other human being, but the Chipmunk and all his kind catapult to the fame within years of their existence.

Then, come Rebecca Black and her Friday song. At the peak moment when people are expressing their grief, concern and prayers to the devastating double major disaster in Japan (8.9 earthquakes and tsunami that followed) the social networking world was injected by a humor by the recording company called Ark Music Factory. They are basically making their business based on the foundation that every teenage dream is to become a pop or rock stars.

These privileged young girls will record a song, written by professional musicians, auto-tuning their voice (so that it wasn’t overly embarrassing) and then have a professional grade music video for them. The end result will be fed to the public through YouTube. Rebecca Black’s video has been gaining millions of views (last count it was more than 7 millions) and even attracted the attention of the mighty CNN.

The lyric was pretty simple and made up from the repetition of the word “Friday” (47 times), “yeah” (23 times), “fun” (20 times) and “partyin’” (17 times). Oh and she’s counting the days and apparently can’t decide whether to seat in the front or back seat. The perfect mixture of brainless lyric and the fact that she can’t sing are the reason of her success. The “Friday Friday” and “Rebecca Black” has been trending on Twitter from Monday. The impact of her song is that big; even it is Monday, Friday is trending.

100th International Women’s Day - Malaysia

“All persons are equal before the law and entitled to equal protection of the law” Article 8 of the Malaysian federal constitution.

Every 8th March each year, women all over the world are celebrating the International Women’s Day. This year, it marks the 100th day of celebration. Being brought up in Malaysia for almost my entire life, I can see the differences between the women years ago with the later year, more women can be seen in the higher learning education and increasing number of women uphold important positions in their respective companies.

However, the main perception of women is still evolving around family matters. From my personal observation, many women are expected to remain as homemakers and mothers. Even if women are given the choice to work, they still need to devote most of their time at home around their family members. Many women who work before marriage have also given up their jobs when they get married.

In conclusion, we still need to focus on women’s rights, sexual harassment, domestic violence, education and women in work. Lots of things need to be focused on and more yet to be identified. Nevertheless, I hope that Malaysia is going on the right direction.

On that note, I checked online for the International Women’s Day Malaysia celebration. There was an event, International Women’s Day Malaysia, 100th Anniversary Celebration organised on 5th of March 2011. While I am applauding the agenda of the event, the special performance baffled me: Sexy Belly Dancing? Well, nothing say celebration of women more than sexy belly dancing. WIN!

Mak Datin Melayu

Mak Datin, definition: 1) wife of the rich Datuk in Malaysia 2) Talking very loudly and always flaunting their richness 3) Job description: attending social functions and gatherings.

My job requires me to go mingle in some of the hottest golf clubs in Malaysia; attending meetings and just random social visits. This is a true story (kind off. Some of the information has been changed to protect their privacy).

I was having a short meeting with a manager at one of the best golf and country club in Malaysia. After that we had lunch at the golf club area.

Next to our table, there was a group of Mak Datins are having brunch. They are conquering the huge portion portions in the middle of the club house. Some of them even have personal assistance standing by with boxes that look like international gifts.

The calm atmosphere from the country club is being interrupted only by their laughter and loud gesture. Some of them are wearing a typical Malay elitist scarf; with a bulging hair spotted under the scarf. While others with their colored hair and huge diamonds on every inch of their body. Covered with designer clothes and the hint of their expensive perfume, they are on the top of the world.

I guess I better explain a little bit of Mak Datins’ lifestyle in Malaysian society. They are the one who’re ruling the society events in Malaysia. Their children are mostly studying overseas, private colleges and a frequent face in the social parties. Whereas, the husbands (Datuks) are the bread winner; more like the BMW and Mercedes winners. Mostly businessmen, some are also Government workers.

Back to the present, after about an hour of laugh out loud (literally), business deals that their husbands made and gossiping about local artists; on my defense I could not help but to eavesdropping into their conversation unless I am close my ears with both of my hands (worth trying).

We ended out lunch (and the Mak Datins group, brunch) and we walked to the car park. To my amusement, one of the Mak Datin said:

“Alamak, I forgot which car my driver sent me here. I wonder whether it’s this Mercedes or the other one”

I just was giggling all the way to the car. This is what we called socialite in Malaysia. So Malay drama! I should hang out here more.

How to Handle Your Twitter Followers

Nowadays, Twitter is getting too crowd with different types of users in it. Some of them are pleasant to be followed, while others will cause you a nightmare. I am not really a fan of unfollowing people (unless you’re really annoying). So I came out with ways to handle 10 types of Twitter followers.

1. The Jokers
These are my inspiration people, they have such a wicked mind, you will blame yourself for not thinking about it first. Not suitable for kids, mostly.

How to handle them: MUST Follow!

2. The Attention Seekers
They love the attention, mostly from their followers. These people are what we called artist wannabe! Being popular is their life virtue and will do anything to climb that popularity leader.

How to handle them: you must identify them quickly and not fall in their traps; like retweeting the nonsense things they tweeted. At times, you can also bury their desire by being a good hater! If somehow they have become an artist, please refer to the number 5 type (artist).

3. Educated
They will talk about politics, world and general issues at large. Some people find this type of Twitter user as informative.

How to handle them: If you’re planning to interact with them, you have to equip yourself with the latest things going on the world and occasionally tweet something intelligence yourself.

4. Self Monolog
They are born to be a writer, though most of them are not. In their own world, they usually talk about what’s going on in their life. It just like reading books!

How to handle them: This type of people is usually self sustain, they can tweet all day long without any single interruption from others. You can just sit back and enjoy their tweet without actually interacting with them. A rare breed and a must follow!

5. Politicians/Musicians/Artists in General
Just like in the real world, they are invading the Twitter too. Nonetheless, this kind of Twitter user can be useful when you need a dose of juicy gossip or just want to know the other side of the story.

How to handle them: Follow with care. Some of them are just talking about nonsense and will spam your timeline with all their replies, but there always a chance of getting to know the different side of them.

6. The Annoying one
There are two types of annoying people. The first one is what I classified as annoying when he or she starts to interrupt my personal conversation with my followers and or friends. This conversation might be continuity from a real life conversation that has nothing to do with this annoying prick (see how my mood changed now?).

Second type is the latest trend on Twitter – specifically in Malaysia. They called it “unmention”; where you have a conversation with your friends without actually mentioning the other person. Thus, you will be reading a conversation without actually understand a thing. I received lots of complains from my friends about this type of people.

How to handle them: For the first type, I usually will just ignore them and hoping that one day they will get it. For the unmention people, I finally found a genius solution apart from unfollow them: follow all the bunch of them. If you follow all of their kind, you can actually understand the whole conversation.

7. Bots/Spammers
Some of them are just posting feed from blogs/sites, others are just posting advertisements based on the keyword of your tweets. They might not even follow you, but still can automatically reply your tweets.

How to handle them: Block.

8. Thefts
Do you know how long it takes to write a well crafted tweet? I don’t either. Nevertheless, we should always give the credit to those who did.

How to handle them: retweet the real source if you can find it. That will send them subtle message.

9. Quoters
I love quotes, but some of you might not. Quotations can be an amazing mind opener, for those who want to discover.

How to handle them: Follow only those that are your cup of tea. You can follow love quotes, motivational or success and everything in between. Caution: Do not retweet all quotes that you read, if not you might be classified as spammer (see 7) or the annoying one (see 6).

10. Informants
From facts to the breaking news, they will provide a feed stream for everything.

How to handle them: Same as the aforementioned type, follow only those that are your cup of tea. Some of them will repeat the same things, therefore, be selective on who you follow.

Thus, follow with care!

The year of the Rabbit: is in sharp contrast to the explosive year of the tiger. It is a year of placidity and respite where little will be set in stone; a carefree happy year that will be both temperate and relaxed.

By the way, have you noticed Hot Shit Form Here new look? Do you like it? I was inspired by beautiful book covers (yes, I love to read books, the real one). As mentioned by lots of reading posts lately, I always judge a book by its cover; well, you need an escape after all those words don’t you?

Who are the 3 idiots on the road?

Evil drivers of HUGE truck/bus
Slow, unresponsive drivers
(Selfish, evil, I fooled you not) lady drivers.

They are basically the evil doers on the roads and can be dangerous to others.

Needless to say, they are humongous; add that up with some of the most reckless driving skill we ever see, they are basically the Godzilla on the road. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw one long truck drove more than 100km/hr on the main highway (Federal Highway) in Kuala Lumpur. It even needs to use two lanes just to pass through a corner. Trust me, seeing one huge lorry with couple of containers on it surfing on the road is mesmerizing (and scary). How about those irresponsible bus drivers? They are basically committing a mass murder on the road. Idiot.

Slow, unresponsive drivers

When the road is becoming a battlefield, you never want the injured warriors to drag you down. Yes, the road doesn't need that kind of warriors. They might not be injured at all, they are just having all the time of their life, talking to the phone, watching the traffic lights turning red times and times again. Hey dude, I have to go to work for God sake.

(Selfish, evil, I fooled you not) lady drivers

I am not being sexist. However, I must admit that were times I swore in my car about the aforementioned drivers. They just don’t let you cut into their lane, do they? Once, there was a police roadblock and the two lanes road was diverted to one lane. This lady driver didn’t want to give the cars on the other lane to combine into hers. The police traffic was forced to stop her car and gave other cars to move into her lane. That sir, just made my day!

To have to wake up as early as 6.30AM just so that I can manage to get into the office by 8.30 AM every day is very tiring. Stressed out even before going to the office!

What is going on with me?

… I haven’t found the time to update my beloved blogs. Anyway, these are what I have been doing for the past few weeks:

Working
Watching movies
Tweeting, a lot

Okay, that’s all, nothing much. Hah.

My job is taking over my life, literally. I have to attend meetings here and there and even managed to finish few projects under my belt. Jyeah!

I know someone out there is still reading my blog. Thus, I will make sure I update my blog more often; starting with this short post. We will meet again, soon.

A recent survey in the Netherlands: 43% would take their TV set with them, 17% the radio, and 17% a stack of magazines. But no one mentioned taking a book! These are the 10 ways to make your reading more fun!

10 Ways to Make Your Reading Fun!

1. Start reading your book
If you've read some of it already, just start there. Buy or borrow a book from your friends.

2. Judge a book by it’s cover
Contrary to popular saying, always judge a book by it’s cover.

3. Take your time
Take a break if it's getting too frustrating or tedious. Especially if the storyline is too heavy, you might want to read it in stages and digest everything in one page at the time

4. Make it as a gift
Everything is more exciting dressed in wrapping paper and a bow.

5. Read it out loud
Speak in different voices for different characters, and voice their emotions. It may sound childish, but it usually works.

6. Book VS Movie
In my opinion, it's best to read the book before you watch the movie. However, if you've already watched the movie, you can picture the characters and scenery as shown in the film. That's always fun to do!

7. Choose your book well
You can choose your favorite genre; chick flicks, comedy, black comedy, fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, biography etc. Suitable fonts, illustration, colors, type of papers.

8. Imagination is the key!
Let your imagination run wild.

9. Reading buddy
Find a friend that shared the same interest with you – you can share the reviews of the books, open up to different authors or genre based on your friends’ suggestions.

10. Encourage others
Your family and friends and try to cultivate reading habits from an early stage.

No, This Is Not a New Year Resolution

Lots of New Year resolutions have been unreservedly all over the Internet. Ranging from losing weight (favorite of all time) to getting married and/or have a baby. If you read one by one, the resolutions usually assembled few things:

Personal consciousness (self improvement)
Family theme (family oriented goals)
Friendship that never ended (yeah, right)

The truth is, I have been experiencing lots of ups and down in the year 2010. I am officially a chemical engineer graduate, working in a property company, moved and renting alone two different houses in just few months, new car, newly found self boasting confident (note to myself: will tune that down in 2011) and met lots of new friends.

"Hi"

I considered myself as a social person; I enjoy meeting new people, with my adrenaline is pumping up to its highest velocity when being in a new and foreign environment. Between the first “Hi” until the series of conversations that followed suit, my mind is easily turned on by this kind of surrounding.

Nevertheless, in 2010, I learned a lot about friendships. In times, you will learn how to choose your friends well. If you’re not careful enough, the old friendship will be weaken by times and distance. A sentence that used to be funny now has becoming an awkward moment in conversation.

In the end, you are left with those who are still being around you; new friends and the old one who stayed. Just hope that those who left are the one who will have your back and care about you.

With that, I would like to wish all my friends, Happy New Year 2011! May this rabbit year will be joyful and fill with meaningful friendships. Be grateful too. Some people predicted the world will ends next year. Erk.

Introduction

• Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI), also referred to as "nosocomial" or "hospital" infection is a buried problem that no institution or country appears to have solved yet.

• Hospitalization and interventions for the purposes of healthcare have always been associated with a risk of infection.

• Advances in medical technology and treatment means more patients are being treated than ever before and this increases the risk of acquiring HAI infection.

• Each year, hundreds of millions of patients around the world are affected by HAI. They are the most frequent adverse event during healthcare delivery worldwide.

• Not all HAI can be prevented; however, high standards of infection control can minimize the risk of occurrence.

What is HAI?

HAI is an infection occurring in a patient during the process of care in a hospital or other health care facility which was not present or incubating at the time of admission. This includes infections acquired in the hospital but appearing after discharge, and also occupational infections among staff. – WHO

Why HAI is Dangerous?

• For a patient affected by HAI, it can cause:

Considerable distress
Extend stays in hospital
Decline in quality of life
Prolong discomfort, permanent disability and in some cases contribute to, or cause, death

• Healthcare staffs are also at risk of acquiring HAI as a result of attending to infected patients.

HAI in USA

• In 2002, the estimated HAI incidence rate in the United States of America was 4.5%, corresponding to 9.3 infections per 1 000 patient-days and 1.7 million affected patients, leading to 99 000 deaths

• The annual economic impact was approximately US$ 6.5 billion in 2004

• Every year in the USA, 250 000 episodes of nosocomial bloodstream infection occur, resulting in 16-40% attributable mortality in critically ill patients

Not On My Watch Campaign

Ventilator–associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the top three infection concerns of clinicians today

• Approximately 20–30% of healthcare-associated infections are considered to be preventable by intensive hygiene and control programs

• To help achieve this goal, Kimberly-Clark Health Care launched "Not on My Watch", a website that provides tools and information to help facilities eliminate HAI.

• Kimberly-Clark will match all year-end gifts made by AORN members up to $20,000.

• The donation will be used to support the advancement of patient safety through education, research and patient safety initiatives.

• A few of these nurses’ programs include scholarships, educational tool kits, webinars and conferences for professional development.
