ABTA 2012 Travel Trends

Abta is upbeat on the state of the British high street, saying in its annual Travel Trends Report 2012 that several travel companies are investing in and improving their shops.

The organisation added that despite overall shop numbers declining due to consolidation in 2011, 25% of the public said they booked holidays through a bricks and mortar agency, compared with 17% in 2010.

The Travel Trends Report 2012 in conjunction with the FCO also pointed out that British holidaymakers in the middle part of the market will continue to be squeezed in 2012 and are placing ever more emphasis on value for money.

These travellers are not, however, necessarily choosing the cheapest holiday but rather one that offers an authentic of specialist experience.

Mark Tanzer Abta chief executive said: “The squeeze on household spending looks set to continue and this is likely to see holidaymakers become more discerning about where they spend their money and what they get for it.”

“This presents a good opportunity for travel companies to offer tailored, specialist and authentic experiences, as well as all-inclusive packages for the budget conscious, that provide great value for money.”

Luxury and all-inclusive breaks will continue to be popular in 2012, the report said, and the baby boomer segment is expected continues to go from strength to strength, with 10% of over-55s taking more than four foreign holidays in 2011.

While familiar countries such as France, Greece, Italy, Spain and the USA will be popular next year as consumers turn to familiar destinations, there should also be growth in less well-known places including Jordan; Colombia; Cape Verde and Poland/Ukraine.

Overseas weddings will also continue to be popular, with one in five couples tying the knot abroad in 2011.

Allbury Travel Group Bankrupt

Allbury Travel Group has gone into administration and it's tour operator companies including Argo Holidays, JetLife and Libra Holidays have ceased trading.

This article in the travel press reveals it's a tough world out there and there is a link between this bankruptcy and the recent bankruptcy of flyglobespan.

Surprising to see that there were only 100 passengers abroad at this time but maybe that goes some way to explaining the problems that The Allbury Travel Group had.

Affected customers should check the CAA websites for info.

Save Hotel Towels - Save The Planet ?!

I have now lost count of the number of times I have stayed at a hotel and read about a policy to help the environment of only changing towels when needed - and having a system where if you leave the towels hanging up they will not be changed...... and the cleaners just disregard it and give out new towels as part of the routine!

Bugibba Malta Holidays

Bugibba is one of the largest resorts in Malta. All the way from Salina Bay to St Paul's Bay you can walk along the kurstlinjen on a lovely walk. During the walk you can enjoy the lovely views over the sea and also the view of St Paul's Island.

The town is very attractive for swimming and sunbathing, although the beach is very rocky. But it has its charm too. On the smooth rocks, it is prefect to lie and "fry" in the sun. Moreover, there are plenty of trails that lead down to the sea where you can cool off with a leisurely swim.
It's worth noting is that the water is very deep, but there tends to be ladders and piers to get direct access to the water and out again. It is very clear in the water and completely safe to swim in.

Bugibba is a real tourist town, there are a lot of hotels along the entire coastline. There are also a lot restaurants serving very nice food. A casino is also available for those that fancy a flutter. Remember to bring your passport and fairly decent clothing. To come in swimsuits and sandals are not recommended.

Bugibba is a great place to go on a boat trip. At the heart of Bugibba walk along the coast, there are several retailers of boating trips. They usually do not differ all that much in what is included, but it may still be worthwhile to enquire among several different vendors before you haggle.

An account of a trip to the Burj El Arab in Dubai :

I'm going to one of the world's most luxurious hotel, Burj Al Arab in Dubai, and I deeply regret that I accepted to be picked up in the hotel's own white limousines. The guard looks out skeptical until he found my name on the guest list and can confirm that I am one of them. The boom flies up, the gate going into the ground and the duckling may pass.
A man with a red suit, open the piccolo, Give me your hand and help me out. The bags have already been carried away. Ten people with similar outfits greet welcome. A woman splashing some lemon liquid into my hands. I do not know if I should lick it up or wipe it off. I embed my face and trying to look unmoved.

Private butler included
The farther into the great entrance, I will open up the higher ceiling. From the lobby is free visibility about 300 feet straight up. On the 14th floor, I met a new reception and my private butler Hari.
The suite consists of two floors and as many hundred square meters. Windows stretching from floor to ceiling - with the touch of a button opens the curtains to reveal a magnificent view over the sparkling Gulf waters.

Golf cart to the beach
Every time I pass reception down to staff up and smiles. When I leave the room in two minutes is the shoes neatly in a row when I return and the minibar is refilled. I sneeze so no immediate rush forward with a handkerchief.
I unpack my Burj Al Arab-beach bag with all the free stuff that can suit for a day at sea. When I start to walk across the bridge a "res suit" stops me and waves to a golf cart to drive me to the private beach.
Two guys help each other to present towels in different sizes, facial spray with lavender fragrance, deodorant and a chilled face towel. I take a water bottle from the ice filled bucket. One guy immediately hurries forward, taking the bottle from my hands, open it and pour into a glass.

I read that the Australian Dollar is pretty strong against the pound at the moment so I thought I would have a look at Sydney hotels to see what sort of prizes we are looking at for November 2009.

So 2 guests, 1 room on 19th November for 2 nights (a weekend). Staying in a four star hotel it seems like we can get the Marque hotel for £55 per room per night and that's the cheapest four star.

Comparing London for the same weekend, the best deal in a four star seems to be about the same price (ignoring stuff like Croydon and Brent Cross). A Hyde Park hotel "Hyde Park Suites" costs £60 per room per night.

Verdict - Sydney is still cheaper than London (the hotel looks nicer too).

September is, in my experience a wonderful time to visit Greece.

Why ?

It's not too busy - the school holidays are over for much of Europe so this is a time when couples come to the fore. When it's less hectic, waiters have more time, beaches are less crowded and everything is just that bit more relaxing.

The sea has been warmed all summer so swimming in those turquoise waters is all the more enjoyable.

It's not too hot. Greece can get crazy hot in July and August but by September you will typically experience very pleasurable weather. By October there is a risk of rain but that said October can be very nice too.

Where ?

Rhodes - A personal favourite of mine. Rhodes has had a hard time in recent years with the press overkill on Faliraki and has much more to offer. One of the most diverse Greek islands with some excellent beaches, hotels from typical Greek to world class luxurious and great Greek food of course. Check this page for Rhodes Late Deals and shop around for the best deal.

Crete - As one of the most southerly Greek islands you get a great chance of some sunshine. Flights from all over the UK and a wide range of choice with regards resorts and hotels. Crete Deals have seven night self catering for under £200pp.

Corfu - Gerald Durrel's favourite. Corfu is a real favourire with Brits and there is a welcoming atmousphere in the resorts. Sidari offers something for everyone and is large enough not to be "dead" by the first week of October as can happen in some smaller resorts at the beginning and end of the tourist season. Corfu flights from UK are available from a wide range of UK airports.

How ?

Just a quick post to say that we use the ebookers.com price match guarantee today and it was no quibble.

Booked a hotel only with ebookers and then saw it was cheaper at hotels.co.uk so emailed ebookers with a screenshot to prove it. The reply came straight back after a couple of hours to say they would be refunding the difference.

I am a big fan of hotelscombined.

It's fast, seems to search all the big hotel websites and lets you book direct at the website.

I think it's best for city hotel bookings. For beach holiday hotels I tend to look at the likes of Thomson or just resort to bing.com and see what comes up.
