Special  guest of this XVIIIth Edition: Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella di Firenze, The world-famous Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy will celebrate its 400th anniversary at ARTIGIANATO E PALAZZO in the Corsini Gardens. Giorgiana Corsini and Neri Torrigiani have invited Eugenio Alphandery to hold the celebration of the historic Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella here, at Artigianato e Palazzo, a fitting venue for the 400 year-old activity founded nearby in 1221 by the Dominican Friars of Santa Maria Novella. The Friars cultivated medicinal herbs and the Pharmacy was opened to the public in 1612. Since then it has become world known and now has 55 single-brand shops in the world, over 15 of which are in Japan and Korea. The products of the Pharmacy are inimitable: their centuries-old history an emblem of continuing innovation and research. The products of the Pharmacy combine artisanal techniques dating back to the Middle Ages with high quality materials and advanced technology.

Friday 11th through Sunday 13th May there will be a number of celebrations dedicated to the 400 years of the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella: a preview with Eugenio Alphandery, director and co-owner of the  Officina, as guest of honour. Eugenio is the heart and soul of innovation at the Officina and is responsible for the expansion abroad of this most Florentine of brands.

Another special guest of the 2012 edition of Artigianato e Palazzo will be the  Consorzio “Il cappello di Firenze”, founded in May 1986 by the Association of Florentine Industrialists to safeguard and widespead the traditional art of straw hats of Florence. On exhibit, under the XVth century Loggia of Buontalenti of the Palazzo Corsini, will be some unique pieces made especially for this event following the tradition of those straw hats which, since the nineteenth century, have been crafted by Florentine hatmakers in many materials: straw, felt, raffia, precious threads, silk, satin and lace. On show will also be a grandiose collective installation.

During the three days of Artigianato e Palazzo the many artisans and craftsmen present will do practical demonstrations of how they achieve their high quality products. You will be able to understand, hands-on, the difference between quality products made by hand and others produced serially.

The idea at the basis of “Domes in the World” is to give a substantial contribution to intercultural dialogue through an international and interdisciplinary congress aimed at highlighting the significance of domes and their symbolic value from the perspective of different cultures. The themes to be examined will include: the cultural and spatial significance of the ancient and contemporary domes in buildings; their architectural context in the territory and in the landscape; their construction (materials, techniques, structural system); their documentation, interpretation, conservation and restoration and their continuity in contemporary building.

Thus this international congress which unites people of various countries, with different cultural backgrounds, philosophical approaches to life and traditional knowledge, will explore the multidisciplinary themes related to domes divided into two main areas: the symbolic, sociological, humanistic context and the architectural field, between geometry, structure and material.

A high scientific profile will allow the participants to assess the present situation of domes, to debate, compare and elaborate their interpretation, to define appropriate uses and the protection of the extensive patrimony of domes existing in the world. The architectural conservation of domes and their material and conceptual significance will also be addressed.

The objective of the congress is to collect and compare scientific information about the cultural and spatial significance of domes for men, societies and cultural landscapes in different cultural environments, past and present, their building concepts and interpretations, their building traditions and techniques, their conservation / restoration and their contemporary building as a basis for  further development of integrated heritage work (planning, education, tourism, conservation etc.).

The promoters of congress wish to obtain results that will be of direct benefit to our civil society (individuals, institutions, public administrations) in its current theoretical, philosophical and real evolution.

Simultaneous translation of oral presentations in different languages such  English, French, Italian, Russian and Spanish is planned so far. The languages will be confirmed according to the registration of participants from different countries.

The congress is directed towards professionals and scholars, as well as to students and graduates attending specialization courses, in the fields of architecture and landscaping, civil planning and engineering, architectural conservation, structural strengthening, restoration, mathematics, anthropology, philosophy, history and history of art, preservation of cultural heritage and heritage tourism and education. It will also be of interest to enterprises and firms working towards the conservation of historic monuments. The promoters of “Domes in the World” have decided to make the congress accessible to the general public who can take advantage of the diffused knowledge from the scientific community. “The New Frontiers of Coeliac Disease: an Update from Basic to Clinical Research”, which will be held in Florence on March 29-31, 2012, will see the participation of many eminent Speakers coming from every part of the world including different European countries, United States and Australia.

Topics of the International Meeting on Coeliac Disease will include pathogenic aspects, novel genetic implications, new trends in clinical presentation, changing diagnostic criteria and perspectives for an alternative treatment to gluten-free diet. A special session will be reserved to young researchers who will show off the results of their most original studies. Moreover, research projects promoted by the Italian Coeliac Disease Foundation will be discussed during the meeting.

Parallel sessions of 30 and 31 March will touch practical relevant aspects of the life of Coeliac Disease patients such as nutritional and psychological problems as well as the role of food industry and Italian government in the management of Coeliac Disease.

In Florence will be held the first World Bach Fest, three days each dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach. This festival, was conceived by Mario Ruffini, born from the desire of the master Ramin Bahrami and promoted by Facebook, is an innovative event.

This event will have three main offices in the city, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino,Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio and Cinema Teatro Odeon.

Ramin Bahrami is one of the most important performers of Bach’s music, the opening festival will take place on March 9 at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale with three Concerts conducted by Mario Ruffini. Bahrami will close the festival on March 11, with the Goldber’s Variations in Salone dei Cinquecento, accompanied by voice-over by Sandro Cappelletto.

Between these two events, there will be a series of musical events:Saturday and Sunday in the Salone dei Cinquecento there will be a 48-hour music no-stop with soloists, groups and orchestras. At the Odeon Cinema on March 10 a Cinema’s Night from 22 pm to 9 am.

Dinosaurs in flesh and bone is the “giant” exhibition at the Florence Museum of Natural History. The big predators inhabit the Botanical Garden where they appear along with tree branches of ancient trees and in the halls of the Museum of Paleontology.

In the exhibition we can see animals whose appearance is the result of the most modern and accurate anatomical and ecological research combined with the unmatched skills of the greatest internationally renowned Italian artists of the field.

The largest animals, including some well-known characters of fantasies that not only children share like Tyrannosaurus, Spinosaurus and Gallimimus, are presented in a surrounding that resembles their original vegetation in one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens. They are represented in scale 1:1.

Others, like the Glyptodone Thylacinus find their place among the skeletons of fossils in the great national paleontological collection which is also an important monument of Florence’s role in the history of science.

The visit of the exhibition, an outstanding event already by itself, is accompanied with activities for children who are the biggest dinosaur lovers. Especially on Saturdays and Sundays the little ones can participate on excavation workshops, on drawing activities and  model with clay.
