Free SMS Alerts for New and Important Emails on Gmail with Google Docs

Below trick is pretty simple it just takes at the max of 5 minutes to setup. It only uses services provided by Google; no third-party services are involved. Importantly it works in almost all countries, free of cost; it is also works for international alerts.

1. Setting up Google Calendar to make SMS as default reminder channel

1. Log in to Google Calendar

2. Click on the Gears icon on the top right and select settings

3. Now click on the Mobile Setup tab.

4. Select Country, enter your Phone number and now click Send Verification Code. Now enter the code you got on your mobile and verify your number. If you don’t receive the code check if your carriers fall under supported mobile providers.

5. Now in Notifications select SMS as your default notification channel and save it.

Now you are done with the Google Calendar configuration part. All that is left is to copy the Google Docs provided below and set the polling frequencies.

2. Creating filter condition and linking to Label in Gmail

1. Login to Gmail.

2. Click on the Gears icon on the top right and select Settings.

3. Go to Labels tab.

4. Scroll down and click Create new label.

5. Give label name as sendsms and click create. Now label creation is done.

6. Now click on filter tab.

7. Click Create a new filter.

If you want SMS alerts only for emails from some important person such as your boss. Set the filter condition using ‘from’ field.

If you want SMS alerts for all incoming emails. Set the ‘Has the words’ field with is:inbox

8. Click Create filter with this search.

9. Now check Apply the label and select sendsms from the drop down. Finally click create filter.

3. Configuring Google Docs To Poll for New Incoming Emails

1. Login to Google Docs.
2. Click here to make copy of the spreadsheet. Click Yes, make a copy.
3. Now select Tools-> Script Editor. Then Resources-> Current script’s triggers.
4. Select click here to add one. Under events select Time-Driven then minute’s timer and every minute and save it.
5. Click Authorize and then grant access. Now click close and save the trigger again. That’s it.

So, now on Google Docs will be polling your Gmail Account every minute for new incoming messages through the label you have created and will send a free SMS alerts as and when they arrive.

Miri and the Gardener

The sun shines on the magic forest. It also shines on a giant oak tree, many centuries old. It’s in this tree that Miri’s family lives. Miri is a young Fairy, she’s very small, barely a few centimeters(A couple of inches) like all the fairies of her race.

Miri loves that tree with the many cavities sculpted with art and dedication. But with the respect for the survival of the living tree, of course.
The problem is that poor Miri is suffering from a mysterious illness. The magician healer was very upset. He had never encountered any such sickness before. He searched the memory books left by previous magician-healers to no avail unfortunately.
The little fairy, courageously continued to believe, in spite of her suffering, that she would heal. Winter was long for little Miri who, from her bed entertained her friends. She could not stand sorrow so she kept her morale up. With spring came a hope, as fragile as the eggs in the nest.
The healer had discovered a cure. But it was the powder that rests on the wings of butterflies. Hundreds maybe even thousands of butterflies,would be needed to harvest sufficient quantities for the medicine for Miri. Miri’s father was at the inn with his friend. He was discussing the problem of which no one seemed to know the solution. It was a sad day for Miri’s father.
A stranger seated at a neighboring table, approached them discreetly as the custom prescribes. He told Miri’s father; ”I think I can help heal your daughter”.
“Stranger, if you can accomplish that, I’ll give you everything you want”
“I have no need for everything, all I need is work.”
“Are you a healer?”
“No a gardener, if you hire me I guarantee that your daughter will be healed by the end of summer."
The honest tone and truthful gaze in the eyes of the gardener convinced Miri’s father to give him a chance. He had nothing to loose and Miri all to win...
From her window, Miri looked at the gardener work, an old man with the precise movements acquired along a lifetime dedicated to the love of plants. The gardener planted lilac trees in many shades. He even planted unknown plants, bushes and flowers with strange, mysterious names that brings visions of exotic places.
The old man told Miri that soon, he assured her, it would translate into a symphony of colors and textures that will perfume the air. He had such a pleasurable expression as he said it, that Miri was certain “HE” could smell it already. Miri observed as the young sprout escaped the soil, as the tender green shoots grew. Soon flower buds appeared followed by the most beautiful blooms.
The gossipers were having a good time. “Shameful, he buys himself a garden while his daughter, poor girl, lay sick and all. Shameful, I tell you.”
Then one warm day, attracted by the selected flowers butterflies came, more and more of them kept coming to invade the garden. The gardener installed a lawn chairs in the clearing and installed Miri comfortably in it.
Miri received a shower of the powder falling from the wings of the butterflies. The powder was of many colors shining in the sun. The rays of the sun reflected in the fine powder.
The clearing was bathed in the light and in that light Miri’s healing… In a week Miri was cured. Her delicate wings shone brightly again. Her face had regained her healthy colors and above all her smile was resplendent.
And this is how Miri got her name: “MIRI THE BUTTERFLY FAIRY”

Don't tell anyone this but I'm a fairy. Nobody knows you see because I never transform around other people. My name is Pixie and I am a green fairy. You see in the fairy tribe I come from they have three different types of fairies: the purple fairy, the
green fairy and the yellow fairy. The purple fairies are the queen fairies the fairies that live inside the Queen fairies castle. The green fairies are just normal fairies and the yellow fairies are people such as nurse fairies etc...

I am glad I am a green fairy because I get to do whatever I like and I have a really nice fairy house inside a giant mushroom. I usually transform at night when nobody is around. I started transforming into a fairy one day when I was about 9 and I think it was because I ate this crab apple and you're not supposed to eat them! I am 11 now so that was 2 years ago. Now that I'm a fairy it gives me the ability to fly around which is great because at night I go to all my friends houses and check that they are okay.
Sometimes if they are having trouble getting to sleep or they are feeling ill or anything I use my magic to help them. The house I go to most often is Amie's house because she's my best friend.
There are three different types of magic: the healing magic (that helps people), the touchstone magic (that makes things appear and disappear) and come along magic (that brings you anything you want.

This is my friend Ee-oor he is a little pocket dragon not like his cousins who are Wedge dragons (this means they are big and purple!) or like his other cousins who are minute dragons (this means they are almost invisible!)
Anyway I just thought you might like to know a few things about what it is like to be a fairy.

The Two Caterpillars

Once upon a time there were two caterpillars, a brother and a sister, who lived together way way up on the top of a big oak tree. The two caterpillars loved each other very much. They played together, ate together, and watched out for each other.

One day, while they were munching on a nice delicious green leaf, a strong breeze blew them off the tree and they both landed on the ground. They looked up and saw how far their little home was, all the way up in the top of the tree.
"Oh, no" said Cater "it will take us forever to make it back home." Pillar sighed and then she said "You're right, but we will just have to keep going until we make it, otherwise we will never get home." So they started climbing the tree. They were a bit surprised because the part they were climbing was smooth and gray, not at all like the rough brown part up at the top of the tree where their home was. But since they had never been to the bottom of the tree they thought that this was just how it was. They had only climbed a few inches however, when the tree started to move! "Wow, the tree is moving now" said Pillar sounding a bit worried. "Look!" Cater said pointing up "This isn't the tree that we're climbing. It's the foot of Elephant!" When Pillar looked up she saw two giant elephant eyes looking straight at her.

The elephant said "Why are you tickling my leg you little caterpillars?" By now Cater and Pillar were very afraid, but they explained to the elephant how the big wind had blown them out of the tree and they had thought his leg was the bottom of the tree where their home was.
The elephant was very kind even though he looked very frightening to the little caterpillars and he felt very sorry for them being stuck on the ground so he decided to help them. He put his long trunk down next to them and told them to climb on. Then he carried them up to the top of the tree by stretching his long trunk way up high. The caterpillars were thrilled to be home again and they both shouted at exactly the same time "Thank you Elephant! You saved us a lot of work climbing back up this big tree." The kind elephant waived his long trunk at the two caterpillars and went happily on his way.

The two caterpillars continued to live in the top of the tree and to take care of each other, but soon it was time for them to make their cocoons and turn into beautiful butterflies. Cater and Pillar said goodbye to each other and promised that who ever came out first would stay and wait for the other one. Then they spun their cocoons and sealed themselves inside.
While they were in their cocoons, another big storm came and blew them off their branch and far away. But this time they did not land next to each other. Cater landed near the river and Pillar landed near the field.
When they came out of their cocoons the caterpillars could not find each other. They looked this way and that but they couldn't even see their home. Each caterpillar, now a beautiful butterfly, was alone in the middle of the great big world. "Where is Cater?" Pillar said when she came out. "Where is Pillar?" Cater thought when he came out. So the two butterflies decided to look for each other.

As he flew off Cater looked down at himself and realized that he had turned into a butterfly with a yellow body and yellow and black spotted wings. He didn't look anything like the little green caterpillar he had been before he closed himself up in the cocoon. He landed on a nearby leaf and sat there wondering how he was going to find Pillar since he didn't even know what she looked like any more either. All his life he had known her as a little green caterpillar too. "This is not going to be easy" Cater thought to himself, "How can I search for my sister butterfly when I don't know what to look for?"
But Cater knew that he had to find her somehow, so he flew up into the air and began to look around for his sister. Each time he saw another butterfly he would rush over and ask, "Are you Pillar?" But each time the answer was "No" so he kept looking. He must have asked one hundred butterflies this question, but none of them were his sister. Everyone wanted to help and they all asked what she looked like but Cater could not tell them because he didn't know. All he knew was that her name was Pillar and that she was his sweet sister.

By now Pillar was just as worried. She had also realized that since she had turned into a butterfly with purple and red wings and blue spots, her brother must look different too. She knew that he must have changed just as much and she would never be able to recognize him. How was she going to find him? How? How? How?
Pillar also began to look for Cater by flying around and calling his name as loudly as she could. Suddenly she had a great idea and she started to ask all of the other insects she saw to help her find her brother by calling his name too. Before she knew it there were hundreds of insects flying around calling her brother's name. The air was full of bugs saying ''Cater".
Before long Cater heard someone calling his name and rushed see who it might be. He followed the sound of his name until he reached a big fat green praying mantis. Cater was very disappointed to see that it was not his sister, and he asked the praying mantis why he was calling his name. The praying mantis told him that a beautiful purple butterfly with blue spots was looking for her brother and had asked him to help.

Cater was so happy! He was close to finding his sister again and he could hardly believe that he would see her again. Once Cater had calmed down he asked a praying mantis which direction his sister had gone. The helpful praying mantis pointed him in the right direction and Cater flew off as fast as his wings could carry him. Every time Cater passed an insect calling his name he would happily shout "That's me!" He was getting happier by the moment because he knew that he was going in the right direction and soon he would see Pillar again. Then, far away, he saw his sister. He started calling her name and flying to her as fast as he could. Pillar heard her brother's voice and turned to see a beautiful butterfly with black and yellow spots heading towards her. In no time the two butterflies were back together again and they were laughing and playing as they flew off across the fields to search for their lovely home.

The Lonely Traffic Light

Once upon a time, there was a traffic light… a lonely traffic light. She felt that nobody gave her much attention. Sometimes people would stand by her and push the button for the light to change, and she felt less lonely while they were waiting. But once the light changed the people would leave and cross the street.
At times, when the light was red, the people waiting in the cars would give her their attention as they waited for the light to turn green. That also made her less lonely, but not for long. Once the light turned green the cars would zoom by without noticing that she existed.

Then, the traffic light noticed that there was a little red car that passed by early every morning and again every afternoon. It was a mother and two little kids dropping off their Daddy at the train station in the morning and picking him up in the afternoon.

Sometimes when the light was red, the two kids would wave to the traffic light, show her their stuffed animals, or stare at her waiting for the light to change. That made her very happy. At other times when the light was green the car would go right through the intersection and the little kids wouldn't even look at the light. That made her very sad.
The traffic light wanted the attention of the two little children and decided that the next time she saw the car she would turn herself red. That would give the kids a chance to wave to her or stare at her. She thought the idea sounded very nice, so that is what she did the next morning and afternoon when she saw the red car.

After a few days of switching herself, the circuit inside of her pole got messed up and the light stayed on yellow. She tried very hard to switch it to red or green but she just couldn't.
The next morning, the repairmen came and opened the little door on the side of her pole. They worked for a couple of hours and found the problem. The switch that she used to turn the light from red to yellow to green had burnt out. In a few minutes they had replaced the bad switch and the traffic light was back to normal. Now she was again able to stop the red car and see the little children every morning and afternoon. But after a few days the switch burnt out again and the repairmen had to come out to fix it once more.

As they were working, the traffic light could hear them talking to each other. She heard them saying that the traffic light must be getting too old and that it was really hard for all of the people, because it was making traffic jams when she broke down. When she looked up she saw a huge line of cars all waiting and honking. All of the people in them were very upset because they couldn't get where they needed to go.
It was then that the traffic light realized how important she was to all of the people in their cars. She had always thought that they were simply ignoring her when they drove away, but now she knew that without her no one would be able to drive anywhere. Then she felt very bad that she had caused all of these problems.

The traffic light did not want to make people unhappy, so she decided that from now on she would only switch herself from green to red when it was the proper time so that her switch wouldn't burn out too soon. She thought of how happy it made people when she was working properly, and she knew that she would still see the kids every day, even if it was for only a few seconds. That made her VERY happy, and from that day on she was never lonely again.

How to Turn Twitter into a Gmail Notifier

I am ready to share a little project around Gmail that I have been working on this weekend. The idea is that you can turn your Twitter Timeline into a Gmail Notifier and get notified (via tweets) as soon as new email messages arrive in your mailbox.
And since you can link Twitter to your phone number, you can even get SMS text alerts for new Gmail messages on your mobile phone with the help of Twitter. There’s no programming required and you can be up and running in 5 minutes.

Connect Gmail and Twitter through Google Docs

Gmail provide an RSS feed of your mailbox but the big problem is that if you have to auto-publish this RSS feed to Twitter, you’ll have to supply your Google account credentials in plain text. That’s not done.

My solution (see source code) uses OAuth with Google Apps Script to link your Gmail and Twitter accounts so you don’t have to share your passwords with anyone. You have a Google Docs spreadsheet that monitors your Gmail mailbox in the background, say, every 5 minutes. As soon as it finds any new message(s) in your mailbox, it sends out a tweet using your own Twitter app. That’s the overall picture but here’s how you can implement it:

Step A: Create a new Twitter App for Gmail

Go to twitter.com/signup and create a new Twitter account for your Gmail Inbox – mine is called myGmailInbox.
Confirm your email address, then open the Twitter settings page and check the option “Protect My Tweets” and uncheck the option “Let others find me by my email address.” This is necessary because you don’t want search engines, or any other Twitter user, to see your Gmail tweets even if the tweets will only have the message subject.
Go to dev.twitter.com, sign-in using your new Twitter account and use the following values to create a New Twitter App. [Name=Gmail; Description=Gmail Bot; Website=http://goo.gl/ldAXX; Callback URL=https://spreadsheets.google.com/macros]
Make sure there are no empty spaces in the URL fields else Twitter may give an “Invalid URL format” warning. Accept the terms and conditions, fill in the CAPTCHA and submit the form to create your first Twitter application.
Next go to the Settings Tab of your Twitter Application and change the “Access” mode from “Read only” to “Read and Write” since we want to publish tweets from Google Docs.
Save the Settings, then switch to the tab that says OAuth Tool and make a note of the Consumer Key and the Consumer Secret Key.

Step B: Link Google Docs and Twitter

Go to Google Docs and make a copy of this spreadsheet in your own Docs account.
From Tools –> Script Editor, replace the values of TWITTER_CONSUMER_KEY and TWITTER_CONSUMER_SECRET with their actual values.
Go to Resources –> Current Script’s triggers and create a new Time-driven event for “sendTweet” that triggers every 5 minutes.
Save the trigger and then click Authorize (Grant Access) so that this script can automatically read your Gmail inbox at set intervals to check for new mails.
Go to Run –> SendTweet and it should display another “Authorization Required” message from Twitter. Click Authorize –> Authorize App to allow Google Apps Script publish tweets to your Twitter Gmail account.

Step C: Follow Gmail on Twitter

Log in to your old Twitter account and send a follow request to your new Gmail account on Twitter.
Log in to your new Gmail account and approve the “follow request.”
And we are done. You should now see tweets for new Gmail messages, as they arrive, in your main timeline.

Get SMS Alerts for New Gmail

Should you wish to receive SMS alerts on your mobile phone for new Gmail messages, just open the Twitter profile page of your Gmail bot and turn on Mobile Notifications. This will obviously work only if you have connected (and verified) your mobile phone with your main Twitter account.
One more thing. In the default setup, the Google Script watches your Gmail Inbox for all incoming mails and tweets as soon as it encounters any new messages in the mailbox.
If this results in too many tweets (or SMS text messages), you can specify a different Gmail search filter and thus receive notifications only for messages that you care about. You need to change the value of GMAIL_SEARCH_STRING in line #18.

How to Hide the Data on your Computer

You may want to hide some files and folders on your computer for various reasons. Maybe you don’t want mom to accidentally stumble upon all the stuff that you have downloaded from the Internet. Or you share the home computer with an inquisitive brother and would not like him to view your private files.
Or maybe it’s your work computer and you are worried that the system administrator may remotely access your files.

Hide your Data from Prying Eyes

Here are some ways to hide your data on the computer from other people:

Put your Sensitive Files in the Cloud

The easiest approach would be that you use a USB Flash Drive to store your confidential files and not the computer’s hard disk. USB disks are inexpensive – you can get a 16 GB disk for less than $10 – and some are so thin that they will easily fit in your wallet like a credit card.
The next option is that instead of storing the files on a physical disk, you upload them online to places like Google Docs (1 GB), Windows SkyDrive (25 GB) or Box (5 GB). Dropbox is another good option for online file storage but because the service synchronizes files automatically with your hard drive, you may want to avoid it on a common computer.

You can also use your web email accounts to store files – attach files to a messages and email it to yourself. The maximum size of files that you attach to an email message in Hotmail is 10 MB while the limit is 25 MB in the case of Gmail.
If you are planning to store EXEs or other prohibited file types in your mailbox, make sure that you change the file extension before attaching as the Gmail scanner will otherwise reject your message.

Hide Files inside Private (Invisible) Folders

If you wish to store your confidential files on the computer’s hard disk itself and not in the cloud, you have several options as well.
You can put all the secret files that you want to hide in one folder and then use a utility like My Lockbox to make that folder invisible on your hard disk. Once you hide a folder, it won’t appear in Windows Explorer and the only way to access the contents of that protected folder will be through My Lockbox.
The free edition of My Lockbox can lock one folder but if you would wish to hide multiple files or folders on your hard disk, use the free Winmend utility. Here you have the option to hide folders as well as individual files and someone will have to know your password to read, edit or erase any of these hidden files and folders.

Hide Files and Folders by Camouflage

Your curious friend is less likely to open a folder that resembles the Recycle Bin and even if he does, the real contents of that folder won’t be revealed.
That’s the logic behind Disguise Folders, a free Windows utility that you can use to easily disguises any folder as a system folder – like the Control Panel, Recycle Bin or even the Fonts folder. When you open any of these “disguised” folders inside Windows Explorer, they’ll open the folder corresponding to their appearance but if you open the same folder through Disguise Folders, it will reveal the actual content of that folder.

Hide Files using the Steganography Technique

The other option to hide files and folder on your computer is steganography – it’s like embedding documents, images, and other files into another unsuspecting file – like your kid’s photograph.
The idea is that you can embed your private files into another file which could be a JPEG image or an MP3 audio file. If you wish to hide an entire folder into another file, just compress into a zip file. When someone double-clicks these “container” files, the image or MP3 will open in the default media player but internally, they are hold all your private files.

You can hide files inside regular MP3s or JPG images using the simple copy command or make use of this free utility called Our Secret. It work like this. You pick a carrier file – it could be a JPEG image or an audio file – and then select one or more private files that you want to hide inside the carrier file. The next step is optional but you can also encrypt the contained files with a password.
Your private files will be secretly bundled inside the carrier JPEG (or MP3) and only when you re-open this carrier file inside Our Secret, the hidden files will be decoded. If you use the DOS copy command to hide the files inside another image, the contained files can be extracted using any Winzip like utility without requiring any special program.

The Most Secure Way of Hiding Files and Folders

While the above utilities do a decent job of hiding your files and folders on your computer, they aren’t the most secure choices available as they lack encryption. If you are really serious about protecting your files from snoopers and hackers, you should use a powerful encryption software like TrueCrypt or SafeHouse Explorer (I find the latter more user-friendly).
Once you launch SafeHouse, it creates a hidden storage area (or an encrypted volume) on your hard disk to hold all your private files and folders. The size of this volume can be adjusted based on your requirements. You can access this virtual drive just like any other drive inside Windows Explorer but the drive and the folders inside are completely invisible until you enter your password inside SafeHouse.
Here’s a detailed tutorial for beginners on how to protect files with encryption using SafeHouse. You can use the utility to protect files on your hard disk and also on your removable USB disks. Your files are protected using the strongest-possible encryption method available but that also means that if you forget your password, it will be impossible to recover your hidden files.

Display your Profile Picture in Google Search Results

If you write a blog or have a website where authors can contribute stories, here’s a new feature in Google – Authorship – that you’ll find very hard to ignore (and you should not).

Google can now display your name as well as your profile picture in search results next to stories that you may have written. The picture will in turn link to your Google Profile page. You may want to see this page on Google for a live example.
What’s the advantage?
As a content creator, this is an important feature for you because you can now indirectly claim authorship of your content on Google search pages.
There’s another advantage as well – your Google CTRs may improve. That’s because a Google page is often chock-full of text and thus people might be attracted more towards a result that has some visual element (the author’s photograph) attached to it.
How do I implement this?

Like it? The good news is that implementing authorship markup into a site is extremely simple and the whole thing should not take more than a few minutes.
Let’s get started:
Step 1: Create an “About Me” page on your blog, if you haven’t done that already, and link the about page to your Google Profile page.
This is important. While creating the hyperlink to your Google Profile page, do remember to add rel="me" to the link as shown below (or see the source of my bio page).

Step 2: Next you need to ensure that all the blog stories that you have written include a link to your “About Me” page. This hyperlink should have the rel="author" attribute as shown below (or see the sidebar of this page for an example).

Step 3: This is the last step. Sign in to your Google Profiles account and under links, add a new custom link that points to your “About Me” page. Tick the option that says “This page is specifically about me” and save the changes.
That’s it. Wait for Google to re-crawl your new content and then test your links. Open the rich snippets tool and copy-paste the URL of one of your recent stories in the preview box. If the results say verified author (see the next screenshot), you are all set.

Troubleshooting tips:
If Google is still not willing to display your profile picture in search pages, here are some things you can try:
1. Make sure your author page is complete with some pictures, you have written a bio and that you have linked to your other social profiles. Also, the author page should be on the same domain as your articles /stories.
2. Your Google Profile should also be complete with your bio and include links to your own site as well as your other online profiles.
3. Google will pick the picture thumbnail from your Google Profile page and thus use an actual picture of yourself (not an icon). The picture should look good even when compressed into a 50×50 thumbnail image.

What’s the address? is a simple tool that can help you find the approximate address of any point on Google Maps.

All you have to do is drag the red marker pin to another location and the approximate snail address of that place should pop-up in a marker window.
You can also search for the street name, city or zip code to quickly jump to any particular location on the map.
The tool internally uses the reverse geocoding feature of the Google Maps API. When you click a point on the map, the latitude and longitude co-ordinates of that place are translated into a human-readable address which is what you see on the map. The UI was written using the Twitter’s Bootstrap framework.

Bing puts a new image (sometimes, even a video) on their homepage every day. Google prefers rotating doodles on the homepage but they do offer you an option to add background images manually from the public photo galleries of Picasa.
If you prefer Google for search but like checking out Bing for images, get this Chrome extension. It will automatically set your Google homepage background to the image that’s currently featured on the Bing homepage.
A limitation is that background images on Google occupy the entire screen area and thus the 960×500 pixel Bing images may sometimes appear pixelated.
There’s a similar app in the Android Market, called Bing Live Wallpaper, that will make the Bing image your default live wallpaper on the Android phone. Once you have installed the App, go to Settings –> Display –> Wallpaper and choose “Live Wallpaper” here.
