Salary minimumTK. 18,000.00 demanded as Bangladesh observes May Day...

2018-05-01T21:15:00.003-07:00

Several organisations have demanded minimum wage of Tk 18,000 a month, right to union, eight-hour workday, workplace safety, and appointment letters at May Day demonstrations in Dhaka.

Thousands of workers carrying banners and posters rallied, took out marches, and organised human-chain demonstrations on the street in front of the National Press Club and adjacent areas on Tuesday.

Police, however, did not allow the BNP’s worker affiliate Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal to demonstrate.

Garment Workers Trade Union Centre backed by the Communist Party of Bangladesh or CPB rallied in front of Mukti Bhaban at Paltan.

CPB President Mujahidul Islam told the rally that the demand for Tk 16,000 minimum wage was raised two and a half years ago.

“The government hasn’t met the demand yet. Now after two and a half years, the minimum wage should be set at Tk 20,000,” he proposed.

He demanded that the authorities guarantee all rights of workers following the International Labour Organisation or ILO convention.

Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal or BaSaD leader Razequzzaman Ratan demanded Tk 18,000 minimum wage at a Samajtantrik Sramik Front rally.

“The government must not delay in meeting this demand,” he said.

He also asked that workers’ right to form trade unions be ensured and compensation made following international laws if a worker is injured at workplace.

Sramik-Karmachari Oikya Parishad, a council of 14 organisations, organised a rally in front of the Press Club.

Jatiya Sramik League President Shukur Mahmud told the rally that it is “impossible” to run a family without Tk 18,000 monthly pay at a minimum.

“We hope the government will meet our demand shortly,” he said.

He also demanded safe workplace, and double payment for overtime work hours and on public holidays.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal or JaSoD President Hasanul Haq Inu also said the minimum wage should be Tk 18,000.

Speaking at Jatiya Sramik Jote rally at the Bangabandhu Avenue, Inu, also tye information minister, urged the workers to frustrate efforts to break their unity.

JaSoD General Secretary Shirin Akhter, Jote President Saifuzzaman Badsha and General Secretary Naimul Ahsan Jewel, among others, spoke at the rally.

Jatiya Sramik Gana Front Coordinator Tipu Biswas addressed a rally organised by the platform of four organisations.

On May 1, 1886, ten workers were killed when police opened fire on a demonstration in the US city of Chicago near Hay Market demanding an eight-hour working day instead of 12 hours.

At the height of agitation, the authorities accepted the workers' demand and the eight-hour day was introduced universally.

On July 14, 1889 in Paris, an international workers' rally declared May 1 as the International Workers Solidarity Day in recognition of the Chicago workers' sacrifice and achievement and since 1890, the day has been observed globally as the International Workers Solidarity Day.

In Bangladesh, the day is a public holiday. All offices, banks, industries and factories remain closed.

Sramik Dal to report to ITU

BNP-affiliated Sramik Dal had announced a march from the BNP office at Naya Paltan at 11am.

Party leaders said police called Sramik Dal General Secretary Nurul Islam Khan and other leaders to Paltan Model Police Station on Monday night and asked them not to go ahead with the programme.

The Dal’s former president Nazrul Islam Khan, now a member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, told a press conference they will report the issue to International Trade Union or ITU.

“We are a member of the ITU. Bangladesh, as a member of ILO, is pledge-bound to implement the ILO Convention 87 (Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise),” he said.

“We have to report to ITU what programmes we organise. We will now report we could not organise any programme and why we could not,” he added.

Sramik Dal President Anwar Hossain said, “It is clear that police are acting on orders from the authoritarian government.”

UN Security Council envoys meet with Myanmar leader Suu Kyi over Rohingya isues

2018-04-30T22:26:00.001-07:00

Myanmar's government leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with United Nations Security Council envoys on Monday over the plight of nearly 700,000 mainly Rohingya Muslims who fled to Bangladesh amid a military crackdown, pledging to investigate any credible accusations of abuse, said diplomats who attended the meeting.

During the nearly hour-long meeting, Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, also noted Myanmar's difficulties transitioning to rule of law after decades of military dictatorship, said diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Myanmar civilian government spokesman Zaw Htay was not immediately available for comment.

Myanmar National Security Advisor Thaung Tun said Suu Kyi has always insisted on the rule of law.

"She has always said nobody is above the law and we intend to implement that. She told the Security Council members 'please bring to our notice any infringement of these laws and we will do whatever is necessary to take the action'," he told Reuters on Monday after the meeting.

Earlier this month, Suu Kyi - marking two years since her party swept to power in a historic vote - said in a televised speech that Myanmar was "struggling to develop politics, society and economy."

Suu Kyi's civilian government has no control over the military.

The council envoys also met behind closed doors for two hours with military Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing in the country's capital Naypyitaw.

Rohingya insurgent attacks on security posts in Rakhine State in August last year sparked a military operation that Myanmar said was a legitimate response. Fleeing refugees have reported killings, rapes and arson on a large scale.

The Security Council envoys are due to travel to Rakhine on Tuesday.

'WHATEVER IS NECESSARY'
Britain, the United States and others have denounced the military crackdown as ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims.
The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has asked it to rule on whether it has jurisdiction over the deportations of Rohingyas to Bangladesh, a possible crime against humanity. Suu Kyi's government expressed "serious concern" over the move.
The US government is conducting an intensive examination of alleged atrocities against the Rohingya that could be used to prosecute Myanmar's military for crimes against humanity, US officials told Reuters.
Earlier on Monday the council envoys met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the country's capital Dhaka, who asked them to press Myanmar to take back "their citizens."
"That's what we want," Hasina told reporters. "They want to go back to their own country. So the Security Council can play a very pivotal role."

UN SUPERVISED RETURN?

Bangladesh Prime Minister Hasina added that the refugees should return "under UN supervision where security and safety should be ensured". When asked if UN supervision meant the deployment of peacekeepers, Hasina said: "Not exactly, well, that the UN will decide".
Myanmar and Bangladesh agreed in January to complete the voluntary repatriation of the refugees within two years but differences between the two sides remain and implementation of the plan has been slow.
"We are ready and willing but it will take two to tango," Thaung Tun told Reuters. "I hope that (the Security Council) will see we are really serious on trying to find a solution for this."
Suu Kyi's office also said in a statement released on Monday after the meeting that cooperation was needed from Bangladesh on the repatriation of refugees.
The envoys visited camps on Sunday, where distraught refugees pleaded for help ahead of the coming monsoon season.
Kuwait's UN Ambassador Mansour al-Otaibi, one of the envoys, told Hasina the Security Council wanted to "send a clear strong message ... that we're determined to end this humanitarian crisis".
The Security Council asked Myanmar in November to ensure no "further excessive use of military force" and to allow "freedom of movement, equal access to basic services, and equal access to full citizenship for all".
Buddhist-majority Myanmar has for years denied Rohingya citizenship, freedom of movement and access to basic services such as healthcare. Many in Myanmar regard Rohingya as illegal immigrants from mostly Muslim Bangladesh.

The bookies have already decided that the newcomers a chance, some by as much as 99.5 points to start, and most experts agree with these sentiments.

The Giants have shown a little more during the NAB than most expect, picking up a win on the Gold Coast and pushing Collingwood and Western Bulldogs to close the opening round, but they also suffered two 74-point defeat Hawthorn and Richmond.
Key rookie Tom Scully missing the game after suffering a fractured cheekbone in a social conflict with Israel Folau, while veteran Luke Power, Dean Brogan and Setanta O'hAilpin also been offside.

Despite their formative years, Steve Coniglio, Jeremy Cameron, Don Tyson, Will Hoskin-Elliot, Devon Smith, Nathan Wilson and Adam Kennedy also showed they are more handy AFL talent as they develop.
But they will face a seasoned side swans will be very happy with the younger brother to keep control in their first official language clash.
Swans enjoyed a successful pre-season, with a preference for the pleasure of long and faster movement of the ball while maintaining access roads difficult and penchant for football controversial. There are high expectations around the club for 2012.
Key forward Sam Reid looks set to strengthen, while younger colleagues Gary Rohan, Alex Johnson, Luke Parker and Lewis Jetta also showed an improvement.
Dan Hannebery his first minutes of the NAB Cup played in the victory last week on the Gold Coast and Adam Goodes seems as fresh as ever, with Ryan O'Keefe (knee) and Matt Spangher (hamstring) are the only real injury worries.

ASK:
Then the Giants had enough of the ball at midfield of the sentence Swans? With Scully put offside, Ward's will, Coniglio and James McDonald have many goods collection and Jonathan Giles will be crucial in the ruck.
How the line of swans forward to work? Coach John Longmire has experimented with a number of options during the preseason, the rotation Reid, Goodes, Rohan, Tommy Walsh, Mitch Morton and Mike Pyke by this part of the field.
Can anyone on the Giants to stop Adam Goodes? The dual Brownlow medalist is a nightmare to match any opposition, but the young side GWS seems less well equipped than most against the superstar.

Bin Laden wife claims, He had not left the room where he was shot for the past FIVE YEARS.

2011-05-06T10:58:00.000-07:00

Osama Bin Laden spent the last five years living in the room of his mansion where he was shot and killed by U.S. forces, according to Pakistan security officials.
The claims were made by the terrorist leader's wife, who apparently told interrogators that she and her husband had not left the same room for the past half a decade.
The revelations of Amal al-Sadah, Bin Laden's Yemeni wife, sheds new light on the existence of the world's most wanted man.

Pakistan continues to defend its failure to uncover Bin Laden, who had been living in the Abbottabad region next to a military base for at least the past half a decade, and officials have rubbished claims that the country's secret services have links to Al Qaeda.

It also emerged today that the only way Bin Laden could have avoided being killed in the raid by U.S. forces is if he was naked.

The elite U.S. Navy Seals team that killed him was told to assume he was wearing a suicide vest if he was clothed, according to a briefing given to a congressional aide.

The aide - briefed on the rules of engagement - revealed that Bin Laden 'would have had to be naked for them to allow him to surrender'.

The terror mastermind was wearing his nightclothes - believed to be pyjamas - when the commandos stormed his compound in Abbottabad.

The admission raises the question of whether the operation targeting the Al Qaeda chief - in which he was shot in the head by a U.S. commando at a hideout in Abbottabad in Pakistan - would have done anything other than kill him.

Military specialists have said that, even arriving in helicopters whose noisy approach would have alerted the house's occupants and all but ensured a fight, were typical of a 'kill raid'.

A special forces officer told the LA Times: ‘If anyone feels in any way that there is a hostile threat ... deadly force will be authorised.

News for John Barry ! 5-Oscar winner, composer John Barry, dies at 77 Years

2011-02-01T01:58:00.000-08:00

Robert Barr / Associated Press
London— Composer John Barry, who won five Oscars for his film work but was best known for his contributions to a dozen James Bond movies, has died. He was 77.
Barry died in New York on Sunday, his family said.

The English-born composer won two Oscars, for the score and the song, for "Born Free" in 1966, and he earned single statuettes for "The Lion Winter" (1968), "Out of Africa" (1985) and "Dances with Wolves" (1990).

He was also nominated for his scores for "Mary, Queen of Scots" in 1971 and "Chaplin" in 1992.

His association with Agent 007 began controversially with "Dr. No" in 1962, although his contribution was not credited. He wrote music for a dozen Bond films in all.

Monty Norman, who was credited as the composer for "Dr. No," sued the Sunday Times in 2001 for reporting that Barry had been called in to help after Norman's inspiration faltered. Norman won the case, collecting 30,000 pounds ($48,000).

Barry, who was not sued, had testified that he was paid 250 pounds to work on the music but had agreed that Norman would get the credit, which was his contractual right.

Barry subsequently wrote music for "Goldfinger," "From Russia with Love," "Thunderball," "You Only Live Twice," "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," "Diamonds are Forever," "The Man with the Golden Gun," "Moonraker," "Octopussy," "A View to a Kill" and "The Living Daylights."

Born in York, England as John Barry Prendergast, he trained as a pianist and then took up the trumpet. He founded a jazz group, the John Barry Seven, in 1957.

The group teamed with singer Adam Faith, scoring hits with "What Do You Want?" and "Poor Me," and Barry moved into film work when Faith was tapped to star in "Beat Girl" (titled "Living for Kicks" in the United States).

"The James Bond movies came because we were successful in the pop music world, with a couple of big instrumental hits. They thought I knew how to write instrumental hit music," Barry said in an interview with the Associated Press in 1991.

Barry was divorced three times. He is survived by his wife Laurie, his four children and five grandchildren. A private funeral was planned, the family said.

'‘The King’s Speech’' takes top honor at SAG awards this Year Oscar underdog to front-runner.

2011-02-01T01:54:00.000-08:00

LOS ANGELES — In the span of about two weeks, "The King’s Speech" has gone from Oscar underdog to front-runner.

The World War II-era British drama took the Screen Actors Guild’s top honor Sunday evening at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, winning the movie ensemble acting award and essentially completing the trifecta of top Hollywood guild honors; its director, Tom Hooper, captured the top Directors Guild of America award on Saturday night, and last weekend the movie walked away with the Producers Guild title.
The movie about King George VI and his stammer is now riding a wave of momentum with just four weeks to go before the Academy Awards, stealing thunder from "The Social Network." That movie, about the founding of Facebook, had been seen as the leading best picture Oscar contender after receiving the National Board of Review’s top prize in December, largely sweeping the nation’s main film critics awards, and taking home a best picture statue at the Golden Globes on Jan. 16. But the film received no trophies at the SAG ceremony.

In the acting categories at the SAG awards, Colin Firth and Natalie Portman took home the top two prizes for their roles in "The King’s Speech" and "Black Swan," respectively.

Portman kept her acceptance speech more compact than she did at the Golden Globes, but she was bleeped by TV censors when she thanked her parents for teaching her not "to be an ..."

After accepting his statue, Firth took a moment backstage to send a text message to his wife, who was back in England, with the news. He then assessed the biggest challenge of his role.

"(I wanted to) make sure it was respectful and real and true to what people (who stutter) go through. It needed to be because nothing would matter if it wasn’t," he said.

The other big winner of the night was "The Fighter," with Christian Bale and Melissa Leo taking home acting prizes for their supporting roles in the boxing drama. The cast was particularly celebratory since both Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund — the real men on whom the film is based — were in the audience to root on their newfound Hollywood friends.

Bale was joined on stage briefly by Eklund, who throughout the ceremony cheered loudly whenever "The Fighter" was mentioned. "Thank you for living the life and thank you for letting me play you," Bale said to Eklund upon accepting his statue. He added, "It’s so silly what we do, sometimes it’s like playing dress-up. Other times it’s so meaningful."

Leo continued the awards romp that began for her and Bale at the Golden Globes, this time giving a shout-out to the six women who accompanied her to the awards show — six of the seven actresses who played her colorful daughters in the movie. "Thanks for helping me get a man to take home tonight," she quipped in reference to her solid bronze statue.

Leo also got a bit political, likely surprising non-Hollywood viewers with her union shop talk. "Let’s join together," she said during her acceptance speech. "Let’s make it a real voice."

She was referring to a possible merger between the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. SAG represents 125,000 members, while AFTRA has 70,000. Many actors belong to both unions, and the two guilds conduct some joint bargaining. If the two unions were to unite, it’s unclear what next year’s awards might be called.

Meanwhile, in the television categories, the cast of HBO’s drama "Boardwalk Empire" won for best ensemble in a dramatic series just two weeks after taking home the top TV prize at the Golden Globes. Steve Buscemi won the actor award for his work on the series, just as he did at the Globes.

Julianna Margulies won best female actress in a drama series for the second year in a row for her role in "The Good Wife." (Katey Segal won the Globe for her work on "Sons of Anarchy.")

Alec Baldwin was named lead actor in a comedy series — his fifth win in a row for his work on "30 Rock" — while 89-year-old Betty White, who last year was honored with the SAG lifetime achievement award, won for her work on TV Land’s "Hot in Cleveland." ”Modern Family" took home the award for ensemble in a comedy series, besting "Glee," which won last year (and captured a Globe two weeks ago).

To Protesters ignore curfew in Egypt

2011-01-30T01:14:00.000-08:00

Thousands of protesters have ignored a curfew in Egypt's chaos-stricken capital as widespread demonstrations demanding reforms and an end to President Hosni Mubarak's three-decade rule continue

The defiant stand came as David Cameron personally spoke to the embattled leader to express his "grave concern" about violence against the anti-government dissidents, who are entering their sixth day of action.

The Prime Minister urged Mr Mubarak to "take bold steps to accelerate political reform and build democratic legitimacy" rather than attempt to repress dissent, according to Downing Street.

In a joint statement with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Mr Cameron said: "The Egyptian people have legitimate grievances and a longing for a just and better future.

"We urge President Mubarak to embark on a process of transformation which should be reflected in a broad-based government and in free and fair elections."

Mr Cameron's intervention came in a telephone call last night, as tens of thousands of protesters remained on the streets.

In Cairo, swathes of citizens ignored a 4pm to 8am curfew and roamed the city under the watchful glare of the army, which has increased its presence of tanks and armoured personnel carriers.

Residents have reported gangs of youths, some on motorbikes, looting supermarkets, shops, shopping centres and homes. Gunfire was also heard in Cairo's centre as well as outlying districts.

More than 50 people are said to have died during five days of clashes with police, and thousands more have been injured.

Mr Mubarak tried to ease the crisis last week by sacking his cabinet and appointing a moderate new deputy.

But the UK and US - previously strong allies of the regime - have failed to give their backing. America has suggested it could withdraw Egypt's multibillion-dollar aid package if civil liberties are not respected.

News today !! Sky sexism row from Sian Massey told she must miss out... again

2011-01-30T00:15:00.000-08:00

Referees'!!

Chiefs have again withdrawn Sian Massey from the spotlight following the Sky sexism row.

Massey was due to referee Corby's Blue Square Bet North game against Eastwood on Saturday after also being due to run the line on Tuesday at Crewe's League Two game against Bradford City.
She was withdrawn hours before kick-off then and was not awarded an FA Cup fourth-round tie this weekend.
She will also not be involved in any of next week's Premier League matches.
Yesterday's decision by Professional Game Match Officials came after Corby reported a huge demand for access by television crews at the 3,000-capacity Rockingham Triangle ground.
Massey was the subject of sexist off-air comments by former Sky Sports presenters Richard Keys and Andy Gray when assistant referee for Liverpool's 3-0 win over Wolves last Saturday.
Gray and Keys agreed female officials 'don't know the offside rule' in an off-air chat that was nevertheless recorded. Following a series of further indiscretions leaked on YouTube, the pair lost their broadcasting jobs this week.

The PGMO insist the decision to withdraw Massey today was taken after consultation with the 25-year-old, a PE teacher at Foxford School and Community Arts College in Coventry.
The Premier League, who speak for the PGMO, refused to comment on whether there would be any financial loss for the official.
A PGMO spokesman said: 'The focus needs to be on the football match, not the officials. It would be unfair on the clubs involved.'
But both managers appeared to have no issue with Massey taking charge of their match. Corby boss Graham Drury said this week: 'We've had Sian before and she had a fantastic game.
'She stamps her authority on the game and she interacts with players well. We've got a top referee for this game.
'I don't mind if it's a man, woman or even an elephant refereeing as long as they do it properly.'

Speaking to Sportsmail earlier this week, the FA's head of national game, Kelly Simmons, talked about how difficult she expected it to be for Massey when she eventually returns to officiating.
She said: 'Sian's a tremendously brave young woman. I can't imagine the pressure she's under. It just goes to show what a fantastic role model Sian is.

'I thought the comments (from Keys and Gray) were disappointing. I can only emphasise how robust and rigorous our refereeing system is. Sian Massey got there on merit.'

Dennis Strudwick, general manager of the Football Conference, said the FA, who appoint officials, had given them no reason for Massey's withdrawal.

"The prices confirm the promise we made that the tickets would be affordable and accessible," Sharad Pawar, the ICC vice president, said. The committee said that in excess of 100,000 tickets were being released for the first phase of online ticket sales. The move to make tickets cheaper comes after the debacle of the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, where tickets were expensive and the grounds largely empty as a result.

Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, was happy with the progress of preparations for the competition. "While there is a lot of important operational detail ahead of us, I am pleased at the progress we have made to date," he said. "For example, in the next few months, safety and security aspects will be dealt with in detail by the security directorate headed by BCCI President Shashank Manohar."
