A band whos name is derived from a Greek word meaning “to renew, refresh or bloom again”, Anathallo is an indie band originally from Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, now mostly based in Chicago. Anathallo utilizes a wide variety of instruments, including horns, guitars, drums, piano, bells, and even unconventional objects like chains, velcro strips, stomp boxes, and pipes. The band has released several recordings through Selah Records, a vinyl release through Potential Getaway Driver, as well as completely independent releases.

Most of the members of Among Thorns, (Matt Gilder, Darin Sasser, Brandon Eller, Gary Ishee and David Childress), who are originally from Texas, have been playing together for nearly 6 years. In 2001, they said good-bye to their lead singer, and a new lead vocalist Chad Jarnagin joined them, bringing new energy and creativity to their music, which is very much evident in their newly released third CD, DRAW NEAR.

"The changes have opened new doors for theband, inspiring them to explore more creative avenues with their music."

They started out being a band for a Bible study, becoming the house band for the Metro Bible Study in Houston, unknowingly beginning their 6 year music worship ministry that reaches out to not only high school and college Youth, but for an expanding audience of a variety of ages.

During these six years, the band feels that the Lord was busy preparing them for His service, growing their personal spirituality and musical abilities, so that in His timing they would be prepared to carry out their music ministry that He was calling them to become involved with.

Darin Sasser, Matt Gilder and Chad offer the following testimonies explaining the Lord's involvement in the band's development in these areas, in His perfect timing.

"I don't think any of us really planned to grow up and be worship leaders, but God changed the desires of all our hearts. After six years together, we're like family. God has polished and buffed and cut and pruned us to get us to the point in our lives where we know that music is just a vehicle that we can ride. It's just a small thing that God can use in us. Our vision is to reach millions of people, and if this is the way God chooses to do it, then we are just going to be thankful and grateful for whatever He does. I pray that these songs will give something to people's hearts".

"When we step on the stage, we focus on the Lord - we don't focus on the praises of man. As we step onstage we want people to know that we are intimately involved with our Savior, and that ultimately we are not there to entertain them - we are there to worship Him together."

Matt Glider / keyboards - 1) Goal for the Body of Christ: "Our calling is also definitely to lead the body of Christ into worship. When God is lifted up, He draws men to Himself. "We're aiming at the body of Christ and bringing people into a new place of worship, maybe somewhere they haven't been before. We try to stretch the audience and get them to dig deeper It's hard to imagine worshiping and having God show up in the room and people not being changed."

2) Goal concerning those who are searching: "We don't have a big agenda. We just hear story after story from people that we meet each night. We've been doing this long enough to know that at each event, on each night, there is probably someone there who is at the end of their rope. People are hungry to know God, and if HE can use us to help lead those people to His throne, that's what we are called to do. We want to lead people into a deep-time of worship and intimacy before God."

Chad Jarnagin / lead vocalist: "We want to challenge believers to get to that place of awakening in worship where they just don't sing about God on a horizontal level but truly sing to Him. Our desire for the band is to have awakenings all across the country, that the Spirit really would move when we lead worship.

Drawing inspiration from bands like Jimmy Eat World, The Appleseed Cast, Mae, and Copeland, A Midday Atlantic has a catchy and intense sound that universally draws in listeners and wins over critics. This 6-piece indie-rock/emo group has dazzled fans in over 6 states with passionate high-energy live performances of their beautifully arranged compositions.

The group began with singer, Miguel Ramirez and guitarist, Ryan Lunde and was later joined by guitarist, Jasun Krebs (formerly of As I Lay Dying), bassist, Cameron Austgen, and drummer, Kevin Weiss. The result is gorgeous melodies, heavy delayed guitars and orchestrated violin arrangements, they find a way to define themselves in an overcrowded genre.

The caught the eye of the press, receiving full page articles in local newspapers, the "Band of the Month" interview in January 2006 on sandiegopunk.com. They have shared the stage with groups such as John-Mark (Maverick Records), Desole (Abucus), June (Victory), This Day and Age, Koufax, Limbeck, and The Spill Canvas.

In the winter of 2007, they traveled to Chico, CA to record with Jeff Schneeweis of Number One Gun. Over two weeks of recording brought each member a new understanding of hard work and pushed them to progress personally as well as musically. Although the pop/rock quintet hails from Nashville, Tenn., their die-hard tour morphs into the wild mission of "being one of the few Christian bands to take over the globe." I like Allstar United because they are not afraid to be different, to stand up for what they believe in. They provide great music with a powerfl message for teens today. They are a must have. Allstar gives us a good beat with a great message. Their song "Put your arms around me" just really spoke to me and made me realize that other Christians can get lonely and it is okay.

Sister acting/singing duo Aly & AJ -- whose full names are Alyson and Amanda Joy Michalka -- showed a passion for both kinds of performing at a very young age: they started playing piano at age six and began acting classes soon after. Born in Los Angeles, the Michalkas moved to Seattle in the early '90s, where their parents exposed them to a wide variety of music and supported their excitement about both acting and making music. As the girls learned piano and guitar, they also landed acting and modeling gigs, which prepared them to pursue both careers more seriously once the family returned to southern California.

Rick Altizer is a recording artist and producer living in Nashville, Tennessee.

He began his career in music as a hopeful trying to break in to the L.A. music scene. Altizer secured a job as a staff writer for Warner/Chappell Music and hired Elliot Roberts, who had worked with Neil Young and countless others, as his manager. Things were looking good, but then a record deal with Sony fell through and Altizer ditched L.A. and took his family to Nashville. Here he hooked up with KMG, a small Christian rock label, and released two records.

1998's Blue Plate Special and 1999's Neon Fixation were Beatles-influenced pop records with a mostly subtle Christian message. Both were produced by Adrian Belew who lent his guitar playing skills as well. Altizer's third album, 2000's Go Nova, was a self-produced album for a smaller label. In 2001, Altizer wrote and produced Soul Lift: Soundtrack For the Soul, a collection of artists like Johnny Cash, Stuart Mason from Jars of Clay, and others singing gospel songs with a techno backing. Also in 2001, Altizer released [All Tie Zer] on the secular pop label Not Lame with Adrian Belew on board again to provide some guitar solos. This album was his most unabashedly pop record and introduced him to a whole new audience of power pop fans. His first three albums were critically acclaimed successes with moderate sales.

Rick developed the children's music line "Worship Jamz". Worship Jamz was the #1 selling Christian children's music CD for 2 1/2 years and the #1 Worship album in the country for 18 months.

His newest release, Scripture Memory - Pop Symphonies, was three years in the making. "It has been a labor of love for me. It was my desire to make a Scripture Memory record that you would actually enjoy listening to. I decided to do my best to make an excellent record in hopes that you would listen to it multiple times. After repeated listening, the scriptures would be forever lodged in your brain.

A true daughter of the South, Jessi was born in Jackson, Tennessee. Her father, a painter and musician, is her biggest fan. Music has always been the way we've communicated." The bond with her mother was equally strong, but her parents divorced when Jessi was three. Dividing her time between her mother's new home in Georgia and her father's in Memphis, the young girl sought solace from a
difficult home life in music. Her small blonde head sandwiched between stereo speakers, she listened to everything - bluegrass to Led Zeppelin to the Eagles to Motown. Summers with her father were highlights, with the two of them hitting Beale Street and absorbing the sounds: "I remember sitting on B.B. King's lap, and I also remember, when my dad played harmonica, passing the hat at clubs, "she recalls. "Of course, that was a hit, because who could say no to a little kid?"

Intending to major in social work, she headed to Middle Tennessee State University. Still, music beckoned. All throughout college, she sang in bands as Jessi ventured more and more often to neighboring Nashville.

Finally giving up school, "Even my teachers said, 'Go!'", Jessi laughs. "They knew my heart wasn't in it". Jessi hit the road singing backup for a few new artists before landing a gig as a Warner-Chappell staff writer.

And then she hit pay dirt in an improbable way. "I hate contests," she says, "I just don't do them." But, unbeknownst to Jessi, a friend submitted a tape of hers to the 2001 NARAS Grammy Showcase. Jessi showed up for the performance, but didn't see it as a life-and-death matter. Surprise, Jessi won, and soon she was on her way.

Her career then took another giant leap forward when she was signed in 2003 by John Grady, President of Sony Music Nashville, to Columbia Records. "In my mind," Grady said simply, "she is the future of country music." Her debut, Honeysuckle Sweet was released in March 2005.

"I think more than anything, this is the first chapter of a long history. I think success would be to know the songs have touched someone because they've been living in me for so long. Some are four, even six years old. To know the transfer has happened - that I've written songs and someone has heard them. That's success."

By that measure, Jessi is already a success. She spent some time as a Warner-Chappell music writer, and Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless and others on country's A-List have recorded her songs.

From the first time you meet Todd Agnew, you'll realize that he's a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy. And his manner of speech will certainly reflect his sartorial taste: direct, straightforward, to the point.

With a Native American background, Todd was adopted and embraced by Texas parents who were dedicated in their church attendance. Crediting his spiritual growth stemming from his family's commitment to God, he was enveloped by the music of the church from his earliest remembrance.

But while his own musical skills and interests grew, including serving as worship leader at local churches, the traditional music began to lose its power, becoming ingrained as a habit instead of a worship experience and a relationship with God.

"As I grew as a worship leader, I realized that when I learned a song at a camp, I sang it with all I had, but when I sang in church, it was just routine," Todd explains. "I've been in church all my life, and it was just habit for me. I knew every word to every song, and there was no speaking of God in that, just rote practice. But when I started breaking down these songs, realizing the depth and value of their meaning, I realized that I would have to teach them again, making them more relevant."

It's when you get to his music that you will find the complexities that inhabit Todd's life.

Todd believes:

There is a God. There is only one and there is no other. He is our Father who created the universe and yet knows us intimately, our Christ who is the fullness of God and yet is humble enough to become a man for our sake, and our Spirit who guides us with the power to convict and to comfort.

We are sinners. Jesus is the Son of God who came to earth as a man and died on a cross for my mistakes. On the third day, He rose again. His death is accepted by God as the perfect sacrifice for my mistakes.

He is holy, different from us. He is worthy of a life of worship.

His debut album for Ardent Records, Grace Like Rain, is a dizzying array of musical styles, none of which seem out of place and all of which help serve Todd's dual purpose as a communicator, horizontally reaching out to a young generation looking for inspiration and vertically reaching out to the Creator who provides that inspiration.

Todd knows that it's because he chose to listen to God's still, small voice that he's been able to then sing loudly from stage. Spending more than a decade passionately serving in the worship field, he traveled to churches that needed music where God sharpened his performance and writing skills before even thinking about making a record.

"I was at a point where I had many different avenues I could have gone down in my ministry: I was leading worship, I was doing my little coffee-house, singer-songwriter thing, and I was playing cover stuff while doing evangelism by playing in clubs," Todd says. "That's where you get all the Dave Matthews, Creed, Counting Crows pop music influences; it came from playing covers."

Grace Like Rain melds rock, blues, soul, and gospel in an unabashed attempt to not only capture as many ears as possible, but also to keep Todd from being pigeonholed as an artist in his first time out the gate.

"I haven't limited myself to one style because musical creativity is an act of worship to an infinitely creative God," Todd says. "I didn't want to put out an album where you could listen to one song and immediately put a label on me as a whole."

It's in that joining of the familiar and the progressive where Todd's music finds its power. That's why a song like "Grace Like Rain" makes such an impact, taking text from one of the world's best-known hymns in "Amazing Grace" and placing it within the context of a groove-laden, alt-rock track. Todd further adds his gritty vocals, singing with a concurrent joy, amazement and thankfulness about his, and subsequently our, sins being washed away.

"About a year and a half ago, God said to me, 'why don't you marry all of those influences together?' I started combining that mainstream sound with worship because that's what our generation liked, wanted, and needed."

As a result of the not-so-gentle prods from a friend, Todd reached out to Ardent Records' Dana Key about using Ardent Studios in Memphis, where Todd had relocated, to work on a record. The longtime Christian music veteran gave Todd more advice than he had expected.

"When I started it, I went to Dana because I knew him from an earlier project. He talked to me about the business and everything, and I had to interrupt him, saying 'Look, I'm not coming to ask to be on your label, I just want to use your studio.

Walking by where Todd was recording, I found myself stopping and listening to his music," says Dana. "It wasn't long before I wanted to get involved. Similarly, whenever I play some of Todd's music for people, it has the same effect of stopping them in their tracks. His music is definitely not background material-it's music that demands attention."

While plunging headfirst into the miasma of the music business wasn't exactly something Todd was expecting at this juncture, he knows that because of his own experiences and being in touch with what God has planned for his life and career, the rigors of what is about to come will be handled. "This wasn't necessarily something I was aiming for," says Todd. "God just took His time molding before releasing me into a world I could not have handled earlier in my life.

"What God did with me was give me a gift, so I started playing and leading worship and doing a lot of the other things, and God basically took my heart and started refining it and sculpting it and telling me, 'This is who I want you to be. I want you to be somebody who wants to be about reaching people.' Once I really had a grip on that, those doors started to open because I was ready to start looking at music."

And the music that has come forth out of Todd is as crafted and polished as any debut to come down the pike in years, with songs like "Reached Down" rocking with an unfettered intensity alongside quieter tracks like "Still Here Waiting," a tune excellent in its reverence and message. Then there's "Lay It Down," one of the first songs Todd wrote after relocating from Houston to Memphis, and the one that most vividly shows his love for blues, rock and gospel.

Todd had been working with Metro Bible Study in Memphis, and pulling together a band of professional players jumpstarted his creativity.

"For the first time, I had a pro drummer," Todd says. One time I was warming up with some Dave Matthews stuff, and I hit the break in the middle of "What Would You Say?" and she just jumped right in there, playing Carter Beauford's part. We started taking these worship songs and turning them into rock songs, or funk or blues or whatever we felt like worked best. That was a very freeing experience for me, and combined with the fact that it was Memphis, it really affected my writing.

"I'd been in Memphis about a month when I wrote "Lay It Down", and through it, although I've grown up in Texas and have been listening to rock music my entire life, the whole blues influence is now a big part of who I am and who I'm becoming."

Todd also lets it fly on "This Fragile Breath," known by its nickname "The Thunder Song." The cut's big, anthemic sound came after a long-simmering revelation. "One day, it hit me all of a sudden. You know what? Worship music, it's power ballads, just done on acoustic guitars and djembes. If we're gonna play a power ballad, let's play a power ballad" Todd says. "That song is all about 'God, I'm here and I want to worship you,' but when it comes down to it, these songs are very small, piddling and insignificant compared to the fact that He is God, and He speaks with thunder and lightning, and what do I have that can compare to that? When it comes down to it, I don't have much, but whatever it is, here, this is what I can offer."

For Todd Agnew, being cognizant of his surroundings and situations is a strength when it comes to his relating to people and leading them in worship. In fact, it's all part of his primary goal. "My focus when I play as a worship leader is to worship honestly. If you can't sing something honestly, don't sing it; you're not fooling God," Todd says. "He's not getting any honor by you singing a line you don't mean. If that means you have to leave out a line, that's fine. We're not up here taking attendance, seeing who's singing which line. Worship from where you are."

Ardent Records' signature voice, Todd Agnew, is currently in the studio recording his anticipated sophomore album scheduled for release early in 2005.

Recording at Memphis, world-renowned Ardent Studios, which has lent its distinctive halls to such artists as R.E.M., ZZ Top, Dave Matthews, Bob Dylan and numerous other notables, Agnew is co-producing the project along with veteran John Hampton (Gin Blossoms, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Audio Adrenaline). Agnew's yet-to-be-titled album follows his 2003 critically acclaimed Grace Like Rain, the debut project that earned him four Dove nominations in addition to honors from Christian Music Planet as one of "12 Artists to Watch in 2004" and Worship Leader magazine as the "2003 Breakthrough Artist of the Year."

Recently exceeding 100,000 retail sales in less than a year, Grace like Rain continues to garner fan appeal including remarkable success at radio. Following two consecutive No. 1 singles, "This Fragile Breath (The Thunder Song)" and "Grace Like Rain," Todd is simultaneously releasing two new songs to radio on Friday, August 20; "Reached Down" for CHR and "Still Here Waiting" for AC/INSP.

In between studio sessions at Ardent and wrapping up this summer's performances at various youth camps and festivals across the country, Agnew is preparing to traverse the nation on two major-market tours this fall and winter. He will headline World Vision's "In the Name of Love Tour" beginning this September along with artists Building 429, BarlowGirl, Starfield and speakers David Nasser and Brian Currie. Agnew will continue in November as a special guest on "Target presents Adoration: The Tour" with Newsboys and Rebecca St. James.

In addition to significant concert exposure, Agnew will be featured in a "Todd on Tour" promotion this fall with participating retailers. Starting Sept. 15, Grace Like Rain product will feature a special sticker providing purchasers with access to free downloads of new Agnew songs, giving a sneak preview of his 2005 studio project.

We're kind of a melting pot, a unique fingerprint for Christian music, combining so many of our individual musical influences into one sound," notes bassist Matt McFadden, while making it apparent members' Christian beliefs are a clear lyrical component. "Our musical backgrounds are so diverse, and it's interesting to see how we pull it all together; but more than just sounding strong, we hope and pray our varied backgrounds will open us up to a larger audience – one not subject to the same three chords over and over."

And those elements are exactly what attracted Slanted Records, the pop/rock/alternative indie label under the Spring Hill Music umbrella, which also recently launched the Grammy-nominated act DecembeRadio. The two bands share the same producer Scotty Wilbanks (Third Day, Overflow, Echoing Angels), who introduced After Edmund to the highly interested staff when demoing tracks for its national debut.

"We actually had a handful of labels interested; but the reason we went with Slanted was we really felt like they were After Edmund fans and we’d seen what they had done with DecembeRadio," McFadden continues. "Slanted didn't feel like business. It was really more like a partnership and friendship where we’ve both decided to work really hard."

The results have proven to be overwhelmingly fruitful throughout the ambitious Hello (February 2008), which fans from any scene can recognize for its artful approach when it hits the shelves in February. Between the vast degree of inventive muses, plus members' own individual talents and chemistry with one another, the disc is drenched with an engaging sonic landscape and thought-provoking lyrical fodder.

"When we talk about several of us being classically trained, it is not meant to sound like showing off," explains drummer Adam Stanley. "Hopefully people won't listen and say 'they sound like music majors,' but our goal through that kind of practice and study is the ability to make better music where we know what we're doing in the studio rather than just stabbing around in the dark. If our backgrounds are not facilitating better art, it's pretty worthless other than just for amusement's sake."

"This is definitely one of the most talented bands I've ever worked with," confirmed Wilbanks. "Most of the guys play at least two to three different instruments. It's pretty cool when the drummer can pick up a guitar and start playing jazz standards and the lead guitar player goes over to the piano and starts playing some Joplin . The guys do a high energy live show, and I wanted to do my best to capture that vibe in the studio...there's no programming on this record. Everything was played live in the studio by the band, kind of 'old school' for today's way of making records. I'm really pumped about the sounds we got on this record..."

Other selections stem from a deeply dug spiritual sustenance. Thank God has become a live classic, bearing musical resemblance to the Foo Fighters and Muse while unveiling thoughts of God being the ultimate source of peace and stability over temporary earthly treasures. The artsy, almost chromatic feel of Clouds speaks of Christ's presence in our lives through the storms we face and how He lifts us above the clouds while simultaneously encouraging the downtrodden that better days are yet to come.

"Scotty has been a huge influence on us, and that's helped make all of these songs better than our original intentions," offers McFadden. "He helped us bring out the best in the songs and made sure they sound like us and accurately convey the musical and personal messages we have in our hearts."

Much of those emotions stem from the guys' personal lives, which have been openly intertwined into the progressive fabric of the project. Ben and Matt are each married (and Matt also serves as a youth pastor); Mitch has a wedding on the way; several of the band members are actively involved in their local churches while at home, including serving as worship leaders; while recent university graduate Yates scored the top spot in his graduating class.

"A lot of our ministry is off stage since we enjoy talking to people and hearing what's on their mind," Stanley sums up. "God doesn't come into every conversation; but He does much of the time, and we are happy to share how faithful He's been to us. Being a musician, life is really uncertain, but we've never missed a meal! We'll be happy to share that, plus a lot of people are looking for someone outside their families to help them feel validated. Just being a listening ear does wonders for their self-esteems, which is an important part in finding the Truth. Sure we're all sinners; but on the flipside, we're beautiful in God's eyes and people have to realize how much He loves them."

Reid Anderson (vocals/keys), Chris Eddie (guitar/vocals) and Garrett Pifer (bass/vocals) were playing in separate bands when their association with Falling Up first brought them together, but the commonality of their musical vision immediately synched them into a potent new unit. Hitting the Northwest tour circuit hard, their inventive blend of dynamic indie rock and vibrant lyricism soon garnered a groundswell of attention and die-hard fans. Reid Anderson partnered with Falling Up’s Jessy Ribordy and Steve Wilson to create 11 nuance-laden songs, reminiscent of impressionist art with its vivid imagery and intuitive sonics. From the first electronic strains of opener “14th & Knotts,” evocative urban images fly fast and furious, vibrantly portraying loneliness and regret while also offering encouragement, reminding us to “remember that the freeway takes you anyplace.” The uplifting message is close to the guitarist Chris Eddie’s heart. “There’s something for everybody, but sometimes we get lazy or feel hopeless and we need a message that says get up, get out there and make something of your life. The band members share their faith in God, but they know they are as dependent on grace as the next guy. Reid Anderson laughs, “We’re way less than perfect. We mess up all the time, and struggle just as much as those around us.” The band is committed to performing in every arena, reaching out to every listener with their timely message of hope and empowerment. The luminous and intensely honest songs of Intermission to the Moon will go a long way in doing just that, while acknowledging the circumstances that create our need. The howling title track, with its brawny percussion, forceful passion, and burning rhythms, bravely looks into the coldness of the culture, and the throbbing, well crafted “Be Honest” takes a bold look at relationship games. “Trendsetter,” with its wildly hooky chorus, vividly describes the high school hero who thinks he’s on top of it all. “I remember the school king,” recalls Anderson , “who played all the sports, and all the girls loved him. Even though the group called it quits in 2003, Adie's passion for communicating her faith through music hasn't wavered, which is particularly remarkable these days when she's busier than ever as a wife and mother to two young daughters, Isabella and Arianne, who are both under the age of two. And if she wasn't ambitious enough, she's also recently opened a hip new clothing store in her small Indiana hometown.

After The Benjamin Gate broke up Adie and Jeremy Camp, who've been married for nearly three years, began writing songs for her solo debut, Don't Wait. With their experiences as recording artists and the couple's innate ability to be honest with each other about what works and what doesn't stylistically, Adie says she couldn't have asked for a better working situation.

This Portland, Oregon-based band is made up of Watson (vocals/guitars/songwriter), Brook Moser (drums) and Tim Aylward (keys). They are fans of all music styles, with influences from Weezer, Five Iron Frenzy and Delirious to The Beatles and Duke Ellington, Above the Golden State’s members describe their sound in a
press release as “West Coast Rock, Pop.” “We’re doing our best not to call it surf-rock,” explained Watson, “But yeah, basically, it’s that with a touch of the rainy Northwest.”

Michael Watson, songwriter and lead vocalist of the group has no doubt as to why he is doing what he is doing. “Music is from God and for God. And I believe God is raising up a new generation of young musicians who want to see music being used for its original purpose – to glorify God.”

Their self-titled debut album, ''Above the Golden State'', was released on July 22, 2008. The band's first single from the album was "Sound of Your Name". The songs on Above the Golden State’s debut are as uplifting as they are accessible, as worshipful as they are radio-friendly.

Watson explains, “One of my favorite quotes is from renowned pastor and author A.W.Tozer: ‘The esteem of the world isn’t worth the effort.’ That sentiment describes my focus with this music. I know the only thing that carries on to eternity is God being glorified in and through us by the grace of Jesus, so we’ll put all our energy toward that.”

When asked about goals, Watson simply states that he wants to go as far as heaven will take Him. With such a unique live show, though, it is not hard to imagine that Above the Golden State’s sphere of influence will expand quickly. One part worship, one part pop show, and one part spoken interaction, Watson and company plan to give audiences plenty to take home with them.

The A7 Bio

Singing together since 1987, A7 is made up of 6 motivated and talented brothers from one family whose first names all begin with A: Arcelious, Alonzo, Alexander, Andronicus, Antipas and Antonio, sons of Pastor and Mrs. James L Harris. The 7 refers to the presence of God in the form of the Holy Spirit which motivates and leads their music ministry and had led them in their preparation for lives of service for Christ as well.

The 7 also in Hebrew scripture signifies
maturity. When they sang together when they were younger boys, they called themselves A-Boys. Now that they have matured mentally, musically and spiritually, they call themselves, A7. Their parents did an excellent job of not only loving them individually, encouraging them to get an education but also in guiding them down the path to the Lord as well. Pastor and Mrs. James L Harris raised and nurtured Godly, motivated children who can depend and grow in the Spirit; a goal which is pleasing to the Lord.

I bet Pastor and Mrs. James L Harris had an active prayer life, a close walk with the Lord themselves and were Christ-like examples, showing their children what having an active Christian faith life style meant / looked like. The basic family principle followed in the Harris household, throughout their childhood and youth, by both the parents and children, was "We have come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord." This belief was relied on and practiced in action, and became a solid foundation to remember to depend on the Lord.

The results of leaning on the Lord and learning to trust Him in each of their lives has been stunning, in that they have fully developed, or are on their to do so, their individual gifts, talents, interests, through the leadings and power of the Holy Spirit, as they grew in their relationship with the Lord. They served the Lord and His Gospel on several fronts, besides their music ministry.

Meet the A7 Members

Arcelious - Drummer, singer, songwriter and lyricist, and also designs clothes. He is founder of D'Clipse Designs. Currently, besides playing music with his brothers, he is a student at LaGrange College studying music and business management. He also produces and helps to develop other "aspiring artists."

His Joy - "The greatest joy I get
out of our ministerial experience is seeing my peers be inspired by the lyrics that we sing."

Alonzo - Keyboardist &
Prolific drummer, organist, pianist, lyricist and composer for both popular and classic musical compositions. His talents showed themselves early when he was a young child. His educational credits are impressive. Graduated from LaGrange College with a degree in Creative Music Technology. Earned a Masters of Music with a concentration in Contemporary Improvisation at New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. Oh yes, he can sing as well!

Alexander - Lead singer with 2 Master degrees who has been blessed with a powerful voice. He is classically trained singer, and has toured with the LaGrange College Tour choir, and a winner of the NATS award for his abilities in singing classical music. Also having a heart for the ministry, Alexander graduated from LaGrange College with a BA in Human Services and Psychology. He then earned his Masters of Social Work at Boston University, and went on to earn his Masters of Theology. He uses all his gifts to minister the word of God through music and reaching out to those in need. Has served as a youth pastor and singing evangelist in his churches.

His Greatest Joy: "Reaching out to the community and seeing to the welfare of those in need."

Andronicus - Group's electric guitarist and bassist, songwriter - also a pastor and a lawyer! He first earned a degree at LaGrange College completing a BA in English and a minor in Religion. Continuing on, he earned a Masters of Divinity from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. In 2005, He earned the Juris Doctorate at Mercer University School of Law. Being a gifted speaker, Andronicus spreads the gospel message through his preaching as a co- assoc. pastor at his home church and as a traveling evangelist. He also is a youth mentor and counselor.

Antipas - Keyboardist, songwriter, producer and pastor / music minister, with 2 Masters Degrees. His musical gifts appeared at the age of 2, as he could play tunes by ear. He earned his first degree from LaGrange College, a BA in Religion and in Creative Music Technology. He went on to earn a Masters of Divinity from Candler School of theology at Emory University and a Masters of Sacred Theology from Yale University. He also has served as an assoc. pastor, a youth pastor and a music pastor, with a real gift of offering pastoral care to high school, college students and adults as well. He is known as a "profound teacher, evangelist and councilor," offering pastoral care to high school, college students and adults as well.

His Life Principle: "Do all you can for God and others while you can and through Christ, who is able to strengthen all."

Antonio - Contributes his rich tenor voice to the four part harmonies found in A7's vocals. Besides singing with his brothers, Antonio excels as an educator and is a gifted youth minister with a flair for counseling youth. Antonio is a husband to the love of his life, Soraya and father to his children: Alexandria, Damarissse, Giovanna and Jada. He earned his BA in Mathematics from LaGrange College and a Masters of Education from Columbus State University. He also earned ED.S. from Columbus State University.

As you can see, all 6 brothers are highly educated, living lives dedicated to the Lord, with a variety of ministries, from teaching to preaching to being in a vibrant music ministry. WOW! What a group of hard-working, disciplined brothers, who have developed both their musical & spiritual gifts and talents, which they have used to fully live their faith in Jesus Christ, giving back to their community and to others whom they come in contact with. .

In between their various ministries and schedules, the Harris brothers got together at the end of 2006, and made a debut album, entitled A7, bringing all their musical training and experiences, along with what they have learned and developed spiritually. A7 managed in 2007 to make special appearances and short tours around their regular jobs, developing a strong following. Their music was well-received throughout 2007, even earning them a nomination for Best Song, for DON'T WALK AWAY at the Gospel Choice Awards.

When they recently switched record labels, their debut album was re-released in Sept. 2007, with a few bonus tracks; an a capella version of MARY DON'T WEEP, GOD BLESS AMERICA and FATHER STAY.

Most of the songs found on this collection of A7's distinct musical style, known as "inspirational urban gospel" were penned AND composed by A7. These songs in this album collection showcase both the vocal talents and their musical gifts as well. The great combination of interesting compositions with meaningful lyrics, propelled by uplifting harmonious vocals and harmonies, truly are a blessing to the listener. Through this debut album, they strive to "whisper peace to the distressed, hope to the despondent and joy to the disheartened, " bringing to light the Lord's good promises and the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

NewSong started out 20 years ago as a 9 member church band for Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta, GA. Founding member, Billy Goodwin, explains the group's faith attitude, "The commitment that we made was, 'God, we'll do this as long as Your hand is on it, as long as we see You working.' One of the joys in my walk has been learning that God is faithful even when things look impossible."

Throughout the years, and changes in the group, they have had
17 #1 singles, six Gospel Music Association Dove Award nominations, numerous songwriting awards, and five of the Top 100 Christian radio singles of the past decade. They are known for their songs, "Arise, My Love," "Miracles," "Jesus To The World (Roaring Lambs), and "The Christmas Shoes," which is also the title of their first Christmas Album.

Besides having a touring ministry, which has caused many to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, have also started their winter Jam and Summer Jam event tours where many top name Christian Artists come together for evening concerts for the benefit of youth and families, at a price that is affordable.

At every concert, they promote World Vision, a Christian organization that feeds, educates and gives opportunities the world's poor children through sponsorship. Because of newsong's efforts, 22,000 children have been sponsored through World Vision.

The current band members are Eddie Carswell, Billy Goodwin, Michael O'Brien (vocals, keyboards) and Steve Reischl (vocals, guitar, mandolin). Matt Butler (keyboards, violin, cello, vocals), the newest addition to the group. Each member brings his unique musical gift to the total group sound. Eddie Carswell makes this observation. Newsong... This group is my uncles fav. group. I fell in love with them when I heard the song "Can't Keep A Good Man Down". My dad doesn't like much music but he even fell in love with the song! Then when they came out with their latest CD I had to get it because it had a tear jerker in it. "The Christmas Shoes" was such a beautiful song of course I had to have it. My mom listened to that song and started crying! I think this is a great group and I'm hoping I can see them in concert. I was able to see them in concert just didn't get to see all of it.

In 1990, Mark Harris, Kirk Sullivan, Andy Chrisman and Marty Magehee felt called to start another Chrisitan music group. So, they left the original band, THE TRUTH and started their music ministry, as 4Him, a Christian Pop music group which was greatly blessed by the Lord with success in the mainstream Christian Pop music industry. During these 8 years, 4Him made 7 original albums to the glory of Jesus Christ. They have won many awards, including 7 Dove awards. Their recogniton and success began in 1991, when they won a Dove Award for BEST NEW ARTIST. A near complete list of all their awards can be found at the bottom of their Discography page.

It had been three years since their last studio release with original songs.

Kirk Sullivan was led by the Holy Spirit to purchase a recording studio, as a witness to God's faithfulness, which he set up in Mobile, AL, where he has been working with local Christian artists and churches to produce their own Christian music CDs. He also developed stronger relationships with the people in a local church over the last 3 years, feeling like he now has a home in Mobile, Al.

Mark Harris and Marty Magehee for the last three years had been enjoying
married life and happily raising their children, immersing themselves into family life, putting their music ministry second.

Andy Chrisman, when he wasn't traveling with the band, is full-time pastor and music worship leader at Celebrate Family church in Celebration, Florida. In 1998, Andy felt a strong calling to become a pastor, and after a two year wait, which "stretched the faith of Andy and his family", a pastor asked Andy to help start a church in Florida.

During this time, the members of 4Him have been traveling down very different roads, gathering inspiration thourgh their own life walks with Jesus, for their next album, WALK ON. The experiences of living their faith in their every day Christian walk began to weave its way throughout the lyrics as they composed the new songs on this CD, which so beautifully expressed these four men's new journeys and lessons learned from life experiences in following the Lord in faith. Mark Heimerman and Brent Bourgeios produced this gem of an album.

4Him once again came together to create a new album, VISIBLE, which is a return to 4Him's roots with amazing harmonies and stellar vocals reminiscent of the sound that established them as Dove Award winners.

With raw and honest lyrics that describe God's unconditional love for mankind and His sovereign power in our lives, this album is a must-have! "The songs on this record are some of the best that we have ever had the privilege to perform. They are from the heart, and I hope they mean as much to others as they do to us," says Mark Harris.

For several years, the members 4Him have been friends with Jim Caveizel, who portrays Jesus in Mel Gibson's film, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. Marty MaGehee was able to accept an invitation to screen the film, and was actually able to visit Jim Caviezel on the set of this movie during its production in Italy.

"I had the opportunity to go to Rome and visit the set with Jim while he was doing this project," says Marty. "Even though we've known him for 10 years, after the make up was applied, and the hair placed on his head on set, he was no longer Jim. I could tell that unlike his roles in the past, where it was easy to separate Jim from his characters, it was nearly impossible to find him at all in this role. My wife Sheri and I could tell that God had done an incredible work in Jim's life through this role."

February 24, 2004 - 4Him traveled to Manila, in the Phillipeans where they performed a series of concerts in The Cathedral of Praise, which is a church of nearly 20,000 members in downtown Manila. The members of 4Him visited 17 years ago when they were still members of THE TRUTH.

4th Avenue Jones is a band that has consistently pushed the boundaries of its sound—a groundbreaking blend of rock, soul and hip-hop influences with energy reminiscent of the glory days when music was art and innovation was king. The 4th Avenue Jones' 'Hiprocksoul' is a flavor that defies conventional songwriting with a combination of energy and precision as found on their incredible new album due out March 2005 entitled Stereo: The Evolution of HipRockSoul (Lookalive/Gotee/EMI). Frontman Ahmad Jones calls the project "an optimistic celebration of music, and its ability to help quench our despair."

4th Avenue Jones was conceived by Ahmad Jones, known to long time Hip Hop fans as Ahmad. His 1994 platinum single "Back In The Day" thrust him into
the national spotlight at the age of 18.

Ahmad decided to abandon his solo career and form his own label, Lookalive Records. He set out to bring together a dream team of gifted musicians who were committed to the art of music. "It was my goal to create a situation that enabled us to make the music we loved on our terms, and be treated fairly in the process," he explains. "In the band we feed off one another's influences and are always introducing each other to artists we dig, like Tribe Called Quest, Depeche Mode, Public Enemy, The Cure, Rachmaninoff, Sibelius, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, and almost every artist that ever appeared on YO! MTV Raps. We work things out in a collaborative way—it's a lot more fun than being a solo artist."

Inspired with a vision of things to come Ahmad enlisted a roster of amazing talent that would position the group for refinement and growth: his wife, Tena Jones, blessing the vocals, Tim Stewart aka “Timmy Shakes” joining on lead guitar, the amazing Gailybird on violin, “Phat” Albert Parker on bass, and Derrick “Dee” Calloway on drums. The collaboration ensured consistent, invigorating performances, and set the pace for the next phase of their careers together. “Our chemistry shows that we are authentic about who we are and what we do, and people appreciate that,” says Tena. “People who support our band know we are always going to give it 100% in terms of our energy on stage, as well as our preparation beforehand.”

What happens when you combine several good things into one? In this case you get one great thing - Jason, Chris and Collin. Separately they are talented musicians and vocalists, but together they form a unique blend that stands heads and shoulders above the crowd. Together they form 33Miles. The trio boasts a fresh new sound that combines their varied influences into an intriguing musical blend that shouts their destiny, "...to love on God's people."

Each member is an accomplished vocalist, songwriter, and musician in his own right, but together there's an electricity and passion that comes from

a shared sense of purpose. "We know why God brought us together," says Chris. "We really believe that God has called us to the church. We feel like we've been called to remind the church and ourselves of who we are in Christ and whom we serve. As Christians, we have grace, mercy and power beyond comprehension and understanding. We just want to encourage the church to look to Jesus. Don't forget who you are in Christ."

This purpose is reflected in their name, which is a simple metaphor for the 33 years that Christ spent on Earth, and how He lived them. "He was a friend to the friendless, He loved the unlovable, and He gave of Himself selflessly by dying on the cross in our place so that we could live forever," Jason explains. "We want to follow Christ. We want our 'Miles' to have purpose and meaning and to make a difference for the Kingdom of God . We aren't promised a certain number of miles, so what are we going to do with the "Miles" that we are given?"

Good news travels fast in Nashville 's music community and as word spread that Jason, Chris, and Collin had formed a new group, the doors began opening. The trio signed with INO Records, home to other artists such as MercyMe, Sara Groves, Derek Webb, and more. As they began working in the studio with acclaimed producer Nathan Nockels (Phillip, Craig & Dean, Watermark, Passion) and hot newcomer Sam Mizell (Jessie Daniels, RJ Helton, & Matthew West) the group's singular sound emerged. The album is a simple message that conveys the heart of 33Miles.

While combining pop, rock, country and worship moments, 33Miles attracts a diverse group of fans encompassing a wide range of ages. "I think a lot of it is because we do take all our influences and put them together," says Jason. Meet 21:03, a contemporary fusion of Gospel revelation and hip-hop beats, poised to top the charts and win praise from a generation of Gospel fans. 21:03 is made up of three young men (Evin Martin, Torrence Greene, and Jor’el Quinn) united around one common purpose: To carry a message of faith, hope, and optimism to an often troubled world.

Each group member has a unique story of his personal walk of faith. Evin was a classic “church boy,” immersed in the faith since infancy; Torrence walking an “on-and-off” pathway that led to
his ultimate commitment to a Power much greater than his own; and Jor’el an Apollo winner as a child, came closer as he began playing piano at his church. All three were born with god-given musical gifts, and raised on diverse musical menus, running a gamut from Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Brandy, and Michael Jackson to gospel greats the Winans, Paul J. Morton, Kim Burrell, and Tonex.

When 21:03 first hit the urban gospel scene with its watershed debut, PAJAM Presents Twenty One O’ Three (2006), they were slowly finding their voice and place in an already cluttered marketplace. With Total Attention (2008) also produced by PAJAM, the trio cements its identity, assuring the world they’re not a flash in the pan. They’re here to stay.

The album PAJAM Presents Twenty One O’ Three features guest performances by two big-name artists – Kierra “Kiki” Sheard on the rock-steady, hip-hop of “One Love,” and JMoss on the heart-stoppingly gorgeous ballad, “I’m Sorry” – all but a handful of the cuts offer a truly equal, even and seamless division of lead and harmony vocal trade-offs among Torrence, Jor’el and Evin, with their voices often almost interwoven as one.

“The bottom line for us is simple,” Torrence concludes. “We want to give hope to the hopeless, and life to the lifeless...and encouragement to keep going, even when the going is tough.”

On their album Total Attention, 21:03 has had the opportunity to study under PAJAM and enhance their writing skills. It has allowed the group to participate in writing on other project and now they have co-written on some of the songs for this their sophomore album. “We are very excited about being able to open up and displaying some of the words that we have in our hearts”, says Evin. The first radio single is “Cover Me” which is a heart-stirring ballad that features an all star cast, Fred Hammond, Smokie Norful, and J Moss.

“We’ve grown spiritually,” Evin says of the period between their first album and Total Attention. “We have a better sense of our ministry and our call. We know that there’s a dying world that needs Jesus and they need to see him in music, in the media, in the church, and in us. We want to be those examples.”

So what is it that the group want to do with their music? What do they want to see happen through their music? Elvin responds, "Man, we're just expecting the unexpected. We expect to reach people; bring light into dark situations. We want to show the love of God and bring that message that no matter what you're going through God can help you. God can bring you through it, you know? We should allow our lives not to just be spoken words but to live what we say and what we sing about and what we teach about. So that people could identify with all our different stories and situations that we've been through. So it's bound to be an awesome experience!"

Evin chips in, "We don't want to be just a group doing music. I mean, we were walking past the Habitat For Humanity booth and we were talking about signing up to do the work, to be the body. We remade a song by Casting Crowns called "We Are the Body". We're very adamant about being the hands and the feet in ministry and not just singing."

12 Stones

Since their debut in 2002, hard rock/heavy metal band 12 Stones has been on quite a remarkable ride. The young quartet from Mandeville, Louisiana randomly found each other while perusing in a record store. After talking for a bit, they started playing together and then soon found themselves practicing up to three days a week. Seven months and thirteen concerts later, they signed a record deal with Wind-Up Records. Three months later, they released their self-titled first album. If only getting into the music business was as easy as 12 Stones makes it out to be!

The 12 Stones album was well received by both fans and critics and hit sales of over 300,000. Their success in record sales came largely through touring with big bands like Creed and 3 Doors Down. As well, lead singer Paul McCoy made an appearance on Evanescence's album, Fallen, which sold 12 million worldwide.

The group followed up their 12 Stones album with Potter's Field in 2004. Because of
the success of their first album, 12 Stones was given complete freedom on Potter's Field and thus made it exactly how they wanted it. They feel that is is all-around, a more complete record because they know each other so much better and have learned to work with one another. It may have a slightly different sound, they say, but that is the sound they have wanted all along.

All four members of 12 Stones take part in songwriting, as it is pretty much an all-the-time thing for them. They are constantly messing around with ideas, and just go with whatever works, dumping whatever doesn't.

12 Stones feels its purpose is is to play positive music that can connect with both Christians and non-Christians. "I grew up Southern Baptist," says frontman Paul McCoy, "and as I've gone to churches and youth groups, I've seen the same 50 people and it's become more of a social gathering. Jesus hung out with liars, prostitutes and thieves. If you have something good to say, tell the world. Don't be judgmental about who you talk to. Learn to be yourself in any situation, no matter who you are surrounded by. Putting yourself in that position to make a difference is key. If you're not a Christian but like the music, it would be awesome if you related to our lyrics. If you're a Christian and you relate spiritually, that's amazing too. People enjoy the music for different reasons and we want to be there for them so they can make their own story from it-to really get it on a personal level where it counts."

The group has a passion for playing for a crowd and love the energy that is exchanged. They hope their music helps people know they are not alone in this world, and that a brighter day will come.

Worship leader, music producer, composer, lyricist, musician, singer. And husband and father, too. Not only does Isaiah D. Thomas bring a host of talents in his mission to Christ, he has been following his calling for most of his life.

“At age ten, I was playing piano for the church choir,” Thomas reveals. “By the time I was 14, I was
teaching songs to the choir, and playing for the service.” Thomas’s father, now a bishop, was pastor of the Bibleway Church in Washington, D.C. “We had church every night. I would study and do my homework in church. My dad was always encouraging me in music. When I was hitting the wrong keys, he’d say, ‘You’re doing great.’”

So great, that at the age of 19, Thomas was minister of music at Cornerstone Peace Bible Church, in Washington, where he not only directed the choir but wrote songs for them to record two albums.

“I could not believe it the first time they played my song on the radio,” Thomas says. “Winston Chaney, still one of the most popular deejays in D.C. -- he was the first. He’s always been a major supporter, and has always pushed me. Before you know it, the song was all over the country. It was very humbling.”

Compared to composing, worship leading and playing, Thomas came to professional singing relatively late in life – at the age of 20. “I didn’t think I could sing,” Thomas says. “One day I had to go into the studio, and the singer didn’t show up. I thought we would have to cancel.” The engineer suggested, since they booked the time, that they should try it with Thomas. He was doubtful, but, “I sang … and I’ve been singing ever since. On the second album [for Cornerstone], I ended up singing lead on six songs.”

Thomas started writing songs when he was young, too. “I was writing at 13 or 14,” he says. “Some of the songs are funny to me now, but some of them I still play.” Much of his early renown came from writing – and producing – songs for other artists, including Gladys Knight, Dottie Peoples, The Williams Brothers and other Stellar and Dove winning artists.

In 2007, with his song “I Will Bless the Lord,” recorded by Byron Cage, Thomas won his first Stellar Award, for Song of the Year. The song also won the following year for “Most Played Gospel Song of the Year.” This time it was the BMI Christian Award.

Thomas also won the Stellar in 2008, with the group he founded, Elements of Praise, for Contemporary Choir of the Year. EOP, as it is known, is a unique gathering of dedicated Christian artists from around the nation’s capitol.

“Elements of Praise is a group of ministry-minded individuals that God has placed in my life,” says Thomas. “They are all very gifted artists in their own right. Twelve singers, derived from different churches, where they are all very active. Some are ministers in their own church. During a song, I could just throw the mike in the air and whoever catches it could minister the song as well or even better. It’s an honor to work with them.”

Many of the members of the group record in their own right, and Thomas produces many of their songs. That’s how he met them. “Musicians would come into town and ask me to help them put something together,” he says. “We started to work together. Now, it’s a family. God has cultivated this group of singers into something that I can’t do without.”

One of the group’s songs, “Said He Would Be With Me,” has had nearly 100,000 hits on YouTube. Says Thomas, “Everyone all over the country, whether we’re playing in Chicago or California or wherever knows that song. When we play it, they’re singing along. It’s very humbling.”

Elements of Praise’s album “I Dare You” is out in September, 2011, and prior to that, a song from the album, “Ain’t No Harm,” will be on the radio.

Thomas’s wife, Shalaundia, is also a member of Elements of Praise. “She’s the real singer in the family,” he reveals. “She is a natural born singer. She was already singing professionally when I met her.”

All three of their sons are gifted musicians as well. “Two of my sons played with me for the first time this summer,” in Hunt Valley, Maryland, at a church convention. “I was so happy for them. There were 1500 people in the audience, and most of them were youth,” Thomas says. “That was very inspiring for them, and I think the youth were inspired by them as well.”

As dedicated a father as Thomas is, he is also a dedicated son. The next album, coming out early in 2012, a live album, recorded in a church in Baltimore, is dedicated to his father. “It’s the most exciting record I’ve ever done,” Thomas says. “One song on it, ‘I Made It,’ my dad wrote. We’ll be singing the song together. I am dedicated the album to him. The whole album is his legacy.”

In addition to all of his other ministries, Thomas is Minister of Worship for New Macedonia Baptist Church. When asked how he balances his touring schedule with his duties there, Thomas is quick to praise the senior pastor, Rev. Patrick Walker. “Pastor Walker encourages me to minister abroad and not just to the local church,” he says. “It’s a great situation, to fulfill my dreams and minister around the country. I’m so blessed.”

The soft Texas drawl gives Chris Clayton away. There is a sincerity to it that, even before he starts talking about his music and God, belies the shaggy-beard quality of his photo on the band’s website. Make no mistake: the band rocks! But when the suburban Dallas father of four boys speaks, it’s as a true believer.

“My father was a Baptist minister, so I came to know Christ at a very young age,” Chris tells

ChristianMusic. “It wasn’t until junior high school, though, that I understood what it meant to have a relationship with Christ… what a walk with Christ meant.”

Though the Chris Clayton band plays to people of all ages, and performs often in church services, their look and sound have an energy that speaks particularly to youth. “We didn’t really set out to write for any particular age group,” explains Chris. His sound, he says, “is just where God has taken me in my journey with him.”

“Summer is a highlight of the year because we’ll be doing six camps all over the country,” says Chris. “Camps are cool because we get to invest some time in the students that we’re leading. Throughout the day, we’re hanging out with them, but mainly leading the music.” And, as evidenced in an entertaining verite video, playing dodgeball.

Chris started out leading worship and performing for youth when his audience was the same age he was. “My grandparents bought me my first acoustic guitar,” he says. “I started playing in ninth grade. Steven Chapman was one of my heroes, and still is to this day.”

“We would go to conference and we would take songs back to our church [in Beaumont, Texas] and play,” Chris says. “My student minister was a big advocate for us.”

Though he and the band are on the road most of the time, Chris still leads worship at his church, 121 Community Church, in Grapevine, Texas. He also works as a record producer and engineer for other Christian musicians. Even with a busy summer, Chris and the band are working on five more songs to complement their latest EP, “Anthems of Mystery.”

The bass player, Matt, is the new guy in the band. The other three have been together for over three years. “Jordan, my guitar player, was one of my students when I was teaching a class at Dallas Baptist College,” Chris says. “My drummer, Brad has been with me for four years. I met him in my recording studio.”

“Anthems of Mystery” is doing well on the iTunes charts. Explains Chris, “I just really like anthems. You want to shout them. They come from deep within.

“The biggest song on the album, ‘Hope of Glory,’ almost didn’t make it on the record,” Chris says, adding that it is being played by other local churches in their worship services. Does this “slower” song work with his rock style? “We do church-wide events a lot, with students and adults,” he explains. “You want to be true to your music, but you have to be aware of the audience. You have to be sensitive to the people in the service.”

“The main thing,” Chris adds, “you have to be confident in the message.”

Relient K has become very well acquitted with a touring lifestyle, being on the road on average 150-200 dates a year. Touring has been a key element to the band's development of their fan base and strong record sales. Being a part of tours featuring bands such as Switchfoot, The O.C. Supertones, Five Iron Frenzy among others, have helped to put the band in front of over a million people to date. In addition, Relient K has ventured out on two very successful headlining tours. The name "Relient K" is from Hoopes' K car. You can see a picture of the car in the photo gallery under the "media" link.

Both Matts and Brian grew up as casual friends. They went to the same church. Sophomore/Freshman year, they all started playing guitars for youth group worship on Wednesday nights. All three of them were really into MxPx, Ghoti Hook, Slickshoes, Plankeye, and other bands like that. With those immediate influences, the guys decided to start the band. That was the fall of 1997. They found a
drummer named Todd Frescone, and he played with the band for about a year. In Feb. 1998, Relient K recorded an independent demo with Mark Townsend. It was crappy but fun to have recorded music. The guys just went to school and played a bunch of shows. Some were a lot better than others. In August 1998 Gotee records showed interest in the band. A demo deal was set into place, and the band started working really heard to try and set things in motion to start full-time. The self-titled debut was finished in August of 1999, and was released 4/28/00. From there on, Relient K started touring regularly. After a few drumming changes, Dave Douglas took the permanent role in December of 2000.

About eight years after that premonition, Thiessen joined up with friends Brian Pittman and Matt Hoopes to start Relient K. The boys wrote some songs that were under the influence of bands such as Mxpx, Ghoti Hook, Five Iron Frensy, and Click Shoes. In January of 1998, with the addition of drummer Todd Frascone, Relient K started playing shows. One month later, as a favor, producer Mark Lee Townsend recorded "All Work and No Play" (Relient K's first demo) for $200. While on tour with DC Talk, Mark played the demo for DC Talk member and owner of Gotee Records, Toby Mckeehan. Toby heard some raw promise in the demo, and eventually signed Relient K to the Gotee roster.

"When I was about eight years old, I distinctly remember tossing around the ideas of being a 'rock star' when I grew up," says Matt Thiessen, singer/guitarist for Relient K. "Immediately after the thought entered my mind, I felt very dirty for having such an idea. That, of course, was 1988, and the tail end of MTV's spandex wielding hair band era. My definition of a rock star was a guy (resembling a girl) with long wild hair, skin tight leopard print clothes, and a keytar (keyboard guitar) in hand. All of this accompanied the fact that I was forbidden to watch MTV, and that all of these impressions of rock and roll were illegally snuck into my mind under mom's ever-present radar. After those 30 seconds of absolute rebellion, I submitted to the respected aspiration of being an astronaut."

Relient K's first album (self-titled) was recorded in the summer of 1999 and released in April 2000. The self titled album was received warmly and has since racked up over 100,000 units in sales. Their second album, "the Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek," was recorded in January 2001 and released late August of that year. The album showed that the band had maturing potential as well as an ever expanding fan base, selling 300,000 copies. In March of 2003, Relient K released their third full length LP, "Two Lefts Don't Make A Right, But Three Do" debuting at #38 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. "It's cool. I'm glad that it exists and that we made it," says bassist Brian Pittman.

"In addition to our 3 nationally released recordings," adds Matt Thiessen "we've always released an EP before every album to allow some new and exclusive material to leak out in-between LPs."

Musically, Relient K listen's to a ton of stuff that influences them. Pretty much any pop punk band you can think of (Midtown, Piebald, NFG, Blink, etc?) as well as bands like The Beach Boys, Ben Folds, and Simon and Garfunkle. Our lives are influenced by our Christian beliefs, our friends, and our amazingly supportive families.

Following up the extraordinary success of 2001's The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek, Relient K fires up another red-hot batch of punk-powered rock 'n' roll that makes their third release, Two Lefts Don't Make a Right, But Three Do, simply explosive. Their riff-driven new album exemplifies this band's continued growth as lyrical craftsmen and pop hook dynamos all realized through songs as smart as they are snappy. Their latest, which vocalist Matt Thiessen co-produced with longtime collaborator Mark Townsend, perfectly captures the group's signature hooks and harmonies without forgetting to slam it all together with a burly dose of untamed punk attitude.

Two Lefts (for short) opens with "Chap Stick, Chapped Lips, and Things Like Chemistry," an ear-addicting take on relationships with a classic Relient K kick. The group's trademark wily wit and John Waters-ish nostalgia rings most rowdy in songs like "Mood Rings" (a sarcastic wish to know when girlfriends are thinking kiss or kill) and "Hoopes I Did It Again" (which describes Canton as "90210 without the Beverly Hills"). And showing revenge is best served loud and fast, "In Love with the 80's" pays back those childhood poundings as Thiessen mocks his older brothers' new wave rites of passage, such as wearing pink cummerbunds to their proms and sporting the famed mustache-and-mullet.

When not jabbing at pop culture stereotypes, Relient K also exhibits deft skill in capturing life's highs and lows in songs that really hit home. Last summer, the group witnessed their music's reach when tragedy stunned their hometown community as a local teenage girl was kidnapped and later found murdered. Relient K happened to be the girl's favorite band, so at her parents' request, the group flew back home from tour to perform "For the Moment I Feel Faint" at her memorial. Recalls Thiessen, "We got to meet her parents and really interact with all her friends. It was incredible to see the impact that the music actually had."

With Two Lefts, serious songs like "Getting Into You" stress the importance of setting one's priorities straight, while "I Am Understood?" deals with feelings that no one understands, including yourself. Likewise, "Falling Out" focuses on the aftermath of a bitter failure, and "Over Thinking" tackles the torn emotions of concluding ill-fated relationships. Clearly the impact of last summer's tragedy further stirred Relient K's approach to offering hope within wellcrafted songs.

Looking back, Relient K originally formed with the simple desire to play shows making their live debut on New Year's Day 1998. Even then, the group's humor invaded the band's very name, which they christened after Hoopes' train-wreck heap of a car, a Plymouth Reliant K. Thiessen laughs, "One night we stopped the car on the highway to see how fast it could go from zero to sixty. It took over fifteen seconds!"

In 2000, Relient K dropped their self-titled Gotee Records debut, which earned the group a Billboard Video Music Award nod. Their 2001 follow-up, The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek, proved to be the group's breakthrough as it continues selling thousands of copies every week while turning these young Buckeyes into a club headliner. In fact, Relient K sold-out 25 mainstream clubs last fall on their first top-bill tour. With Two Lefts promising even more success, Relient K is already set to rubber the road again this spring on the national See Spot Rock Tour, expecting to fill over 40 auditoriums in "A" markets across the country.

"We are just regular kids," confesses Thiessen about his band. "I think we relate to our audience because we are our audience. We like the same music that our fans do, songs that helps us have a good time but that also make us think."

Without question, Relient K's latest is about to deliver a lot more of these good times, and that's something to think about!

DECEMBER 2010 CONGRATS... “What Love Really Means” is a hit single by J.J. Heller. The top female Christian song of the year, this single is from her album, “When I’m With You.” A hurting child, a lonely woman, a man in a prison cell--all wonder, “who will love me for me?” “I will love you for you,” they hear, as the voice within their hearts points to Jesus as the answer.

JJ Heller shares "I have always love Phillipians Chapter 2. Paul talks about having an attitude like Christ (which is a pretty tall order). This means being humble, authentic, willing to serve, and entirely dependent on the Father."

How would you describe your music?

JJ Heller: "I would describe it as acoustic, lyrically-driven, folk-ish music."

JJ Heller graciously shared about her life, her influences, her spiritual walk with the Lord, her musical process, and her songs.

Her relationship with the Lord Jesus began early and evolved as she came of age, deepening in her adult life.

JJ Heller shares, "I grew up in San Jose, California in a Christian home, and gave my life (the best way I knew how) to Christ at the age of 5. I feel like I’ve had a really firm foundation as far as Biblical knowledge, but I don’t think I truly claimed Christianity for myself until college. I started to question things, and search out the answers for myself, and because of that, developed a stronger sense of what I believe. Since then I’ve been trying to figure out how to truly live out a relationship with God instead of just trying to follow a list of rules."

Any personal testimony you would like to share to encourage others, what the Lord has done for you?

JJ Heller - "I’m simply amazed that God would choose someone like me to be in a relationship with Him. He knows my weaknesses better than I do, and yet He still loves me. He has kindly and gently shown me that the way to His heart is not in doing good things, but in chasing after Him with all that I have."

Mentors? Who in your life as been a source of guidance, reinforced your character, taught you your important values?

JJ Heller - "My parents have been a great example of what a godly marriage looks like, and what it means to be obedient to Christ. They have also proven over and over how much they support me and believe in the music that Dave (her husband) and I are sharing with others."

Musical Influences: Artists (secular and Christian) which influenced you growing up or now which have influenced your singing style, performance skills and / or composing.....

JJ Heller - "I’ve always loved music, but my family didn’t listen to a whole lot of it when I was growing up. I remember hearing Jennifer Knapp for the first time, and being blown away that Christian music could sound like that. It was just so different than what I was used to hearing. Recently my husband, Dave, and I have been really intentional about expanding our horizons as far as music goes. My absolute favorite songwriter is Patty Griffin. I also enjoy Damien Rice, David Gray, and a whole bunch of amazingly talented independent artists that we’ve met since moving to Nashville."

What was your early musical experience? First performances?

JJ Heller - "I started taking piano lessons when I was 5, and later got involved in children’s choir both at church and at school. I was given a few solos during this time, which I loved but which also made me extremely nervous!"

How did the Lord prepare you for your life of service through music?

JJ Heller - "He definitely started me out with a good dose of humility. I was in a vocal ensemble in High School, and I was rarely given solos. It wasn’t until I went on a missions trip to Africa early in college that He began to birth the dream in me to be a singer/songwriter."

How were you led by the Lord to use the artist’s musical gifts to write and sing songs?

JJ Heller - "It was a very gradual process. I started to write songs during my sophomore year of college, and eventually started to play with a band (that included my future husband, Dave) at some open-mic nights at coffee shops. From there we landed our first real gig which made me a nervous wreck during the days leading up to it. The more gigs we played, the more I fell in love with it. I realized that when I'm sharing my heart and my thoughts through songs, I'm doing exactly what God created me to do. I feel so at home doing what I love."

JJ Heller continued, "So, as Dave and I moved closer to graduation and our wedding day, we felt like God wanted us to keep playing music. We didn't know what in the world we were doing, but we decided to go for it. We've been full-time musicians since we've been married, and I wouldn't trade our experience for anything."

Any life-molding experiences that you would like to share with us, which were pleasant or were difficult, but molded your thinking, music, Christian walk, outlook on life?

JJ Heller shares, "A huge experience would have to be simply making the decision to play music full-time. After interning at the Arizona Republic newspaper in Phoenix, my husband, Dave was offered a job as a staff photographer. It was the job he'd been working toward since he was in elementary school and I didn't want him to give up his dream for mine. I told him that the decision was his, and after praying long and hard about it, he knew that God was calling us to music. He said that he felt more fulfilled playing music than taking photos. It definitely wasn't the most logical decision, but we've never regretted it."
