As couponers, we all pay very close attention to the price of products in the grocery store. So I'm sure you've noticed the uptick in just about everything. The fact of the matter is that the Federal Reserve's "quantitative easing" program (that means "printing money out of thin air" for you non-banksters) is now starting to effect us as a rise in commodities prices. Commodities are what you and I use\need every day. Cotton rose 54%, corn rose 29%, soybeans rose 22%, orange juice rose 17%, and sugar rose by 51% during the months of September and October alone! When current inventories are burned off, we will really start to see prices rise.

Please, PLEASE watch this video from the National Inflation Association and wake up to what is being done to us.

Hi, everyone. I'm sure you've noticed that I haven't been posting alot lately (OK, not at all). Please allow me to explain what's going on. When I first got into couponing, I was so excited about the huge pile of money I was saving - heck, I still am! And I started this blog as a way to tell my family and friends about the magic of couponing. And then it blossomed into so much more than that.

But the fact of the matter is that it really takes alot of time to stay up on all the sales, coupons, coupon matchups, etc. With a full-time job, it is really ~~difficult~~ impossible for me to post about them all. I have always prided myself on having the most complete grocery matchups in Kansas City but that was taking up my entire Tuesday evening and alot of Wednesday. I started to realize that it was becoming more of a chore and not so much fun to spend my mornings before work and my evenings doing coupon matchups and posts. I started to question the silliness of re-posting deals (which is what alot of couponer blogs do, including a certain well-known one here in KC - they don't have any original content of their own). And, even worse, I started to miss deals because I was busy posting and not hounding!

The past week has been an experiment to see if I could kick this blogging addiction. What I found is that I was able to get so much more done, spend much more quality time with my hunny and my darling pups, and the freedom of knowing that I didn't have to get a post done before work or before bed is intoxicating.

So, after a year and a half, I am saying goodbye to ThriftyPuppy's blog. I want to thank you all for being such faithful readers and for all that you have shared with me. I wish you all the best of luck and hope that you save a mountain of money. For those of you that hang out on SlickDeals or HotCouponWorld, you'll see me posting there. I may be giving up blogging but I'm still chasing the deals!

Today is National Donut Day and lots of favorite donutmakers are making our lives a little sweeter by giving away those little circles of sweet numminess.

Lamar's (my favorite here in KC) is giving away a free original glazed donut

Dunkin Donuts is handing out free donuts with any drink purchase

As with all freebie giveaways, not all stores may be participating, so I recommend that you call ahead.

Here's a little on the history of Donut Day: according to Lamar's website, the Chicago Salvation Army started in 1938 to honor the "lassies" of World War I - women volunteers who served donuts to soldiers behind the front lines in France. Donuts were chosen as a treat for the soldiers due to the difficulty of providing freshly-baked goods near the front lines. According to popular legend, the donuts were made with leftover ingredients and a wine bottle for a rolling pin. They were cooked in oil inside a soldier's helmet. The donuts were such a hit that the lassies produced thousands of donuts around the clock. And that tradition has been celebrated ever since!

Smart Stockpiler or Insane Couponer?

You're looking at 13 boxes of 100 coffee filters - enough to last 3 and 1/2 years!

It all started a couple of weeks ago when Price Chopper had Melitta coffee filters on sale for just $1.00. DBF can't function without coffee in the morning and it seems he's always "almost out of coffee filters, honey!" and, dangit, I didn't get the $1.00 coupon in the 3/28 SS. So I was really bummed when I saw that sale.

The only good thing was that the shelves were wiped out, so we were able to get a raincheck. And the super-nice lady at Customer Service was nice enough to write us a raincheck for an UNLIMITED amount of any Melitta filter product from 40 to 200-count. So I drove home at 90 miles an hour to order the coupons from Coupon Dede (thank you!) I ordered 30 coupons (they expire May 31st) and got them promptly 2 days later. Why only 13 boxes in the picture? That's all they had. But, again, the nice lady at Customer Service informed me that they'll have some on the truck that will be here on Wednesday. If I buy the other 17, I will never have to buy another coffee filter for another 8.2 years!

It's a good thing Coupon Contessa posted over the weekend about other ways to use these - did you know they are great for cleaning your windows?

I stopped by Walgreens after work yesterday to snag my FREE Ivory soap 3-pack (on sale for $0.99 this week with in-ad coupon and I had the $1.00 coupon from the current Rouge maagazine to make it FREE). The coupon beeped since it was a penny over the price of the item and the manager acted like he didn't know how to price adjust the coupon or the item. Weird, since other managers have done that at the same store before. I ended up walking out with my coupon.

Which I promptly took to another Walgreens where they had no problem marking down the Q. Aaarrrggghhhh! Why can't Walgreens get their coupon act together?
