What it must have been like to be in his band of disciples. This man who “spoke with authority” and yet was as free as the wind was leading them through a myriad of adventures and challenges. One day the crowds loved him, the next the crowds hated him. He was venerated and vilified all at the same time. And all of the time your mind is grappling with the growing realization that this really is God in human form. What a journey!

I feel the same way about what we see God doing through so many different people and ministries. This is living now the excitement of looking to see what the Father is doing. It is one of the reasons that in these newsletters we do not only talk about what House2House is up to, but also frequently highlight other people and ministries. We should join the Lord wherever we see him at work. You will never go short because you promote others. Doesn’t Proverbs teach us, “Let another man praise you, and not your own lips.” (Prov. 27:2) So here are some situations that I count it a privilege to pass on to you:

Roger Thoman is doing wonderful work through his blog (www.simplechurchjournal.com) and through the on-line courses that he runs (see http://simplechurchrevolution.com/coursedescription.htm for information about the course and when it will next run.)

From time to time we mention David Shepherd and Heaven’s Family (see http://www.heavensfamily.org/) because I know of no better way for any house church group to involve in missions and caring for the poor and the needy. 2012 would be a great year to see your church regularly standing with these wonderful folk in the work they do around the world.

If you want your faith stretched, why not join with this India church planter, who for the past two years has been praying for (AND actually seeing) one million people baptized within their network). Read his challenge to the body of Christ at this link. Is anyone in this country ready to take his challenge for 100,000 souls?

Do you know the I Am Second movement? Awesome stories are coming out of this work with many multiplying house churches (not always called churches, but “a rose by any other name still smells as sweet”) springing up all over the country. If you have never checked out these folk or looked at some of the tools that they provide, you should seriously consider doing so!

You all know that we love and respect what Neil Cole and his blog bring to the body of Christ. But by checking out this link you can not only check out other resources from CMA, but also listen to a podcast of Rad Zdero, a Canadian medical engineering inventor and house church leader, introducing people to what house church is all about!

If you have never been overseas to see what the Lord is doing, then let me challenge you to consider contact Floyd and Sally McClung at info@all-nations.co.za and consider going to S. Africa to work with them on a short term missions project. It will change your life and give you the privilege of seeing a little of what our Father is doing across Africa!

Finally, or this list will go on forever, you must watch this YouTube video about Jon Zens book, “The Pastor Has No Clothes!” Understanding the Biblical position on The Pastor may be a big surprise to people who have never read this fascinating book. It is worth it for Neil Cole introduction even before you get into the book itself!!

We love what we see the Lord doing through others. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t also highly value the visibility and the resources that the Lord is making available through House2House! In a recent newsletter I shared that Ken Eastburn has recently become our new Executive Director. Most newsletters will now be written by him. David Underwood has assumed the leadership of the House2House board. (Actually, we believe that the Holy Spirit has always and continues to have that position, but for ease of use, I think you all know what I mean!) They are already helping to bring together resources of materials and people to be available to serve any of you in your work with the Lord. In this context I definitely want to mention that Katie Driver (see her blog here), another of our board members, does an incredible job in coaching folk who are leading house churches or are seeking to transform legacy churches into more of a house church network. Why not contact her to discuss how to re-ignite life within your church community.

Well, I know no one will read this if I go on any longer. It is a privilege being allowed to send this to you. I hope that you will find the links and information in this week’s newsletter really helpful.

The Pastor Has No Clothes!
By Jon Zens

Protestantism carries on with the practice of making the “pastor” the focal point in church. In The Pastor Has No Clothes, Jon Zens demonstrates that putting all the ecclesiastical eggs in the pastor’s basket has no precedent in the New Testament. Using 1 Corinthians 12:14, Zens shows the usual way of doing church contradicts Paul’s self-evident remark that “the body indeed is not one part” and then goes on to unfold from that Epistle how the living church functions “with many parts.” Jon dismembers the traditional pastor doctrine from various angles by combining two new essays and a response to Eugene Peterson’s The Pastor: A Memoir, with three past articles and excerpts from his response to Dr. Ben Witherington’s review of Pagan Christianity.

Church planters Tony and Felicity Dale and acclaimed researcher George Barna bring a big message to God’s church. How might we change the world if our Christian faith began multiplying at a rapid pace—through a way of life that is explosive and transformational? And as God uses us to channel Jesus’ love into a hurting, desperate world, we’ll see his church grow beyond anything we could have imagined.

Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday the House2House board met in Austin for our annual board retreat. Everybody comes at their own expense, with most people staying in our home or some preferring to pick up the tab for hotel space. Then we have three relaxed days to pray, reflect, discuss and plan. The direction for House2House, even the question of whether or not House2House should still exist, are always on the agenda. We try to follow Jesus in only doing “what we see the Father doing.” (See John 5:19) This year’s time brought us to a very clear place of unity and clarity. Let me explain:

As we considered the past, we were so encouraged to see what the Lord has done. House churches and house church movements have rapidly entered the mainstream of American Christianity over the past few years. This was almost inconceivable just a few years ago. House2House has not caused this, but it has been allowed by the Lord to be a small part of this seismic shift in the direction of church in America.

Events like the 2011 Exponential-Verge conference confirm that from the largest to the smallest churches across America, thinking and action steps are happening because of the impact of house church type thinking. The emergence of the concept of “missional”, although meaning different things to different people, is testament to the impact of the rapid growth of church planting movements (small, rapidly multiplying churches that are planting churches) all over the world. Church leaders across the denominational spectrum are exploring concepts and reaching out to those, like Neil Cole and The Greenhouse Movement, who are making simple/organic church principles accessible and understandable to all.

So where do we go from here. Felicity and I have watched over the years to see how we can best fit into the Lord’s plans for us. We are generally pretty good at the pioneering stages of a new movement. We love change! But we are not nearly as good at leading the pioneers on into maturity. We are better at casting a vision and helping it get off the ground than subsequently building it into reality. But God always provides the leadership that is needed. Over the past few years, Ken Eastburn (many of you know of the work his wife, Ali, does with www.withthisring.org) has had a growing sense of his commitment to working with house church movements to help them mature. Out of this discussion and the hard work that Ken has been putting into House2House over the past year, the board has come to the following decisions:

Asked Ken to become the new (also the first!) Executive Director of House2House. Ken’s role is to help steer and implement the goals as articulated by the board. We hope that we can make this a full-time position, as the Lord shows the way to raise the finance necessary. We have not had full-time staff the last few years.

David Underwood, one of the original four people (along with Jim Mellon and Tony and Felicity Dale) to start House2House, is going to be taking over as Chairman of the House2House board. I will continue to serve as a co-chair for this next year while Ken and David learn the ropes and work their way into their respective responsibilities.

We are initiating a series of tools and services that we believe will help to support the cost of this expanded role for H2H.

Katie Driver, another board member, and Felicity Dale are pulling together the core of a coaching and support mechanism for house church leaders looking to re-energize and mature the house churches that they are leading. For more information on this contact coaching@house2house.com.

Alongside this, we want to expand the relationship with the www.lk10.com site, and encourage people to strongly consider their six week Foundations Course, as an awesome tool for individuals or groups to grow into a deeper understand of the leading of the Holy Spirit within a small group context.

There are two other things that I want to mention to help everyone getting this newsletter understand the changes that we see taking place.

First, the Lord has been giving me a clear vision of what I can do through my company to radically transform how Christians handle the ever escalating costs of medical care. Most Christian families, let alone churches and ministries, are not aware that there are substantially cheaper and better alternatives to handling health costs than using medical insurance. I am now specifically working with the staff of churches, Christian schools and colleges, mission groups, and Christian businesses to help them cut their medical cost by 50% or more. Any of you who would like to know more about this should go to http://www.thekarisgroup.com/Services/IntrotoMedicalSharing.html to find out more.

Secondly, scriptures teaches that we all have the privilege of helping to support the people and ministries that have helped us (see 1 Cor. 9:11-12). We want to start encouraging each of you to consider making a small, monthly donation to H2H as a practical way of supporting the vision and ministry of House2House. As little as $10 per month from enough people will make a significant impact on how we can implement the many things mentioned above. Your part in this is both vital and much appreciated.

Well, that is more than enough for one newsletter. May I urge you to pray with us as we seek to follow the Lord into 2012 and all that the Lord is asking of House 2 House in the year to come.

It is strange to see how much society is changing all around us. Most of us grew up in environments where Christmas was enjoyed by all and no one thought there was anything strange about keeping Christ in Christmas. In one short generation (a Biblical generation being 40 years) we have seen all of that change. Now each of us individually needs to choose how actively we center on Jesus. And that is not a bad thing! It makes personal what previously may have just been a societal response.

At a time of year when we remember how God gave of Himself in giving us His Son, it is no wonder that we also respond by looking for ways to give. I love my Mum’s attitude, as a retired missionary to China and a long-time follower of Jesus when she told me to let all of our family know that she doesn’t want any gifts this year. Rather, if anyone wants to give her anything, give her cash which she can give away to another missionary couple who will put it to good use! I want to remind you of some things that you may have heard about in this newsletter before, but which still need our help. What a great time for your house church to consider taking on board one of these great giving projects:

Jacob Phiri leads a network of house churches in Zambia and is helping in the planning and hosting of a conference for house church planters from all over Africa that is planned for January of 2013. He is very involved in some major agricultural projects that desperately need a diesel powered tractor. They have collected $6230 towards this project, but need $15,000 to take delivery of a tractor which could transform farming in their region. You can respond to Jacob directly via his website www.actionforempowermentzambia.com. We have friends on the ground who work with him and this is a trusted project.

David Servant, who some of you know through his Heaven’s Family newsletter (see www.heavensfamily.org for up to date info) continues the amazing work that the Lord has put on his heart in many different parts of the world. The December newsletter tells amazing stories including of one grandmother who is literally taking tons of food into N. Korea to help Christians there. It is very easy to give via this site into a wide variety of trustworthy causes.

Bhutia Dawa is another of the precious saints that Felicity and I have been privileged to meet and to work with in the past year. His work in training house church planters in S.E. Asia for working in some very hostile environments is amazing. On top of this, they have been very involved in disaster relief from recent earthquakes in the primary country that they work in. Even small gifts make a huge help in these situations. If God puts this on your heart, contact Bhutia directly at bhutiads@yahoo.com.

Our Australian cousins at Oikos put out a great newsletter. Here is the link to their Spring edition (don’t forget they are in Spring right now in their upside down world!)

The “I Am Second” movement that advertises on major billboards in a few key cities across the US is putting on a great training event in Plano, TX in January. They are helping to start groups in schools, businesses, universities, etc. all over the nation. Click this link to find out more about this exciting training happening next month.

As you pray over some of the items that I have listed for your prayerful generosity in other parts of the world, could I also ask you to pray over what, if anything, it may be appropriate to give to House2House here as we near the end of the year. House2House is totally dependent on the Lord’s provision through all of your generous gifts. Many people plan their giving around the end of the year. We believe that the Lord has some significant expansion of services and tools that House2House can provide to the rapidly proliferating house church movements around the country. Your help is key to that!

One creative way that one family gave last year was by providing to us Airline Miles for use for Mission conferences. This saved us thousands of dollars on travel costs. Do any of you reading this have Airline Miles that you might want to donate now? Contact Paul@house2house.com if you want to give in this way.

The Lord has been speaking to Felicity and I a lot from the book of Haggai about what it looks like to build His house, rather than just our own individual house churches! Felicity has touched on this in her blog (www.simplychurch.com) and I plan to say more through this newsletter in the New Year. But for now let me just make one point – at the first Christmas, as was beautifully put by one hymn writer, Jesus left his house to work on something he viewed as more important: us!

Thou didst leave Thy throne and Thy kingly crown
When Thou camest to earth for me
But in Bethlehem’s home was there found no room
For Thy holy nativity.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
There is room in my heart for Thee

Every blessing,

In The Pastor Has No Clothes, Jon Zens demonstrates that putting all the ecclesiastical eggs in the pastor’s basket has no precedent in the New Testament.
Church planters Tony and Felicity Dale and acclaimed researcher George Barna bring a big message to God’s church.

Felicity and I just arrived home from a night at the movies. We went to see “Courageous”, a wonderful new movie by the same group that did “Facing The Giants” and “Fireproof.” This movie is a challenge to men to be the fathers and husbands that God called them to be. It is great to stand with other Christians by supporting a movie like this with such a clear message.

This typified to me the call of God to meet our culture head-on. Our “meetings” need a clear understanding of the purposes of God. God is preparing us as a dwelling place for God in the Spirit. We are living stones, designed to impact this world with the presence of Christ. Jesus “went about doing good and healing all those who were oppressed of the devil, for God was with Him.” (Acts 10:38). And didn’t He tell us, “As the Father sent me, so send I you!” This is the call of God to each of us. I am far from convinced that house church is primarily about what happens in our homes. Rather it is about what happens in our lives – 24/7 living in the presence of God and providing evidence to the world around us that God is ready to touch and to bless them.

Well, that is enough of what the Lord is challenging me on. Here are a few other things that I think merit our attention in the middle of the busyness that characterizes almost everyone’s lives:

Nate and Joanne Krupp have been pioneers within house church movements for the best part of 50 years. Some of their early writings on church life have helped people from all over the world. Maurice Smith, who many of your reading this newsletter will know, has alerted us to the serious need they have for some financial help at this stage in their lives. He writes, “It broke my heart to read (this report). I’m sitting here at my computer on the verge of tears wondering what can be done to help these two saints who have been a blessing to the HC community over the years.” Go here if God is touching you about this opportunity to bless a couple who have been such a blessing to the wider body of Christ over the years.

A friend of mine whose kids are missionaries in India just sent me this link to a great two minute cartoon video helping one understand discipleship. It is a delightful explanation of so much happening in simple church movements. Enjoy!

We are blessed with so many great friends. Many of these are actively involved in missions, mission thinking, and strategy development. Some of you will know of Don Davis’ work through house2harvest.com. If you haven’t investigated that site, do so. Another of these friends is Pam Arlund. Pam has done everything from being Professor of Linguistics within a Chinese University to working with students across America through the Student CPX (student church planting eXperience). She is very keen to begin dialog with any people who are involved in or who have been thinking about cross-cultural missions and the role of simple/organic church movements in reaching across cultures. Pam’s email is parlund@allnations.us and she would love any of you involved in cross-cultural missions to be in touch with her so that she can help gather data and ideas on how house church movements can be more effective in contributing to world missions.

Robert Fitts is another of those pioneers who has selflessly promoted church planting movements through house churches over many decades. His book, “The Church in the House – A return to simplicity,” has helped thousands all over the world. Now a house church planter in a M country is asking Robert for helping in getting 5,000 of these printed in his nation’s language for use within their house church movement. Robert would greatly value financial help in this venture. Could your house church consider being involved with him? If so, contact him at RobertandJoni@gmail.com.

Several of the items in this week’s newsletter are requests for help. The truth is these are just a few of the many such requests that come our way. If you or the house church/es that you are a part of don’t know how to involve in generous giving, we are always glad to pass on more of these ideas to you. The thought here is not that anyone church would involve in all of these things, but rather that every house church would go before the Lord to see what the Lord is putting on your hearts and how you can help in whatever areas of need that the Holy Spirit gives you a burden about. As Paul said in 2 Cor. 8:7, “Since you excel in so many ways, . . . I want you to excel also in the gracious act of giving.” If you are the only one in your house church who receives this newsletter, why not pass this on to the rest of the team and encourage them to subscribe.
That enough from us for now! God has been doing some awesome things in the house church we are a part of. If you want to know more, check out Felicity’s blog at simplychurch.com.

All churches, denominations, and parachurch organizations are eager for new models of leadership development. Cole uses the life and leadership lessons of the Apostle Paul to show how to develop leaders who are skilled, dedicated, and always open to learning from experience.

Cole, a trusted, innovative authority, uses the four journeys of Paul to shows how leaders can grow to be more influential.

A publication from the acclaimed Leadership Network

Paul, the original “church planter,” was very instrumental in the growth of Christianity—and a perfect model for today’s leaders.

Shows how Paul’s leadership developed over the course of his life to get better and better with time and maturity—and how they can do the same.

By Tony & Felicity Dale with George Barna

Church planters Tony and Felicity Dale and acclaimed researcher George Barna bring a big message to God’s church. How might we change the world if our Christian faith began multiplying at a rapid pace—through a way of life that is explosive and transformational? It happened once before, in the early days of the church; what will it take to bring us to that point of urgency and determination again? Small Is Big offers keys to 21st-century evangelism: leveraging the power of the small—and taking the gospel to where the people are and the pain is. And as God uses us to channel Jesus’ love into a hurting, desperate world, we’ll see his church grow beyond anything we could have imagined.

Ben Witherington’s review of Pagan Christianity.

by Neil Cole

A powerful, biblically based model of leadership development based on the life of the Apostle Paul

Originally published as The Rabbit and the Elephant and now updated with new material.
