hey guys it's ro! welcome to another nerdy nummies! today i am dressed like merida from the movie brave ! i got so many request from you guys to do something brave themed and i was thinking -hhmmmmm- while watching the movie i saw that she and her brothers and all of her family were eating these iced rolls and i thought -that's what i wanna make- so today we are gonna be making the iced rolls from brave let's get started! the things you'll need will be:

3 cups + 3 tablespoons of bread flour 1 and a half cups of butter at room temperature 8 eggs half a cup of milk an additional 3rd cup + a tablespoon of bread flour, we are keeping this separate for a reason 1 package of active dry yeast quarter cup of sugar and 1 table spoon of salt

you will also need: some maraschino cherries royal icing with a little bit of orange juice added in aand a plastic bench scraper now let's put it all together! the first thing that we're gonna do is warm our milk. i put this in the microwave for about 30 seconds you wanted warm to the touch but not hot add our yeast and our smaller measurement of flour to our milk then take a spoon and mix it up to make a paste

set it aside for about 10 minutes to let it do its magic our yeast is ready, i've put it into a larger mixing bowl wisk together our sugar and all of our eggs first before we use the dough hook before we put this onto the mixer add 1/4 of our flour mix together until the flour starts to disappear and add more flour we are gonna be adding it in 4 parts this is 1 of them mix -add your flour- mix then, in between, add a little salt. just remember add your flour in 4 parts and the salt after the second close the mixer, turn it to a low speed and as its goin' slowly add our butter chunk by chunk

our dough is mixed. over here i've got a big bowl and some flour. sprinkle the bowl, i am also gonna sprinkle some flour on the top because this dough is very sticky and we gotta get the dough out of there and put it in the bowl our dough is in the bowl, now we are gonna tuck 'em in just got a little clean kitchen towel for this recipe, we are gonna let it sit for about 1 1/2 hour to 2 hours until it doubles in size our dough has risen and now we are gonna cut and measure them into 2 ounces â™ªwake upâ™ª take some flour. powder your work surface

we're just gonna pick it up, flip it over hope it comes out *poof* is it g- did it do it? this looks so cool. this makes me feel like i'm baking in a medieval bakery like in a castle or something doesn't it? get a lot of flour on your hands and now we are gonna push it down to flatten it out *tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap*

take your bench scraper and cut a little chunk and just put it right over here on our scale, we want 2 ounces huuuuuuuuh 1.78 tiny bit more boom 2 ounces pick 'em up and you are gonna put 'em off to the side keep cutting 2 ounce portions until you've cut out all of your dough. we've got all of our dough cut out and now we are gonna shape it into rolls it's a little bit different then just rolling it into a ball we've got a technique

you're gonna take a little bit of flour, just a little bit this time, not a lot then you are gonna take one of your measurements and you've got some flour on each side now we're gonna fold it, fold it, fold it, fold it, fold it, fold it and fold it now we are gonna put the folded side down then i'm gonna roll the dough in my hand its gonna go between my thumb, my palm and my pinkie once your ball is ready we're just gonna pick it up, place it over here onto our cookie sheet line with a piece of parchment paper. and you don't wanna put more then 12 balls onto your cookie sheet. you don't wanna crowd them. got all of our little rolls on our cookie sheet and now it's time to put them to bed one last time.

so you are gonna get your little kitchen towel and put them to bed now, wait 30 minutes. let them sit at room temperature after they've proofed we are gonna take the towel off ooo look at that they grow up so fast now we are gonna brush our rolls with a little bit of egg wash over here i've got 2 eggs mixed up with just a little bit of salt , paint over the top this will give 'em a nice shiny golden brown color it's time to bake! you're gonna heat your oven to 350 degrees and bake theses for 22 minutes

once your rolls have baked and had plenty of time to cool. now it is time to decorate ! over here i've got a little bit of royal icing in a plastic baggy and now i'm gonna ice each of the rolls to look like the icings from brave in the movie the icing on the rolls in the movie are wiggly like this. and then i'm just gonna fill it in. our rolls are iced and over here we've cut our maraschino cherries in half then we're gonna stick 'em on the top

i love that show too. hey, if you'd like tobecome a zombie without being bitten, you need to listen to what my friend les galushasays. so, les, how long do you think it's gonna take to zombify me? well, everythingwe're using here you can find at walmart or in your kitchen. this here is a little gelatinappliance made from like knox gelatin, a little higher grade than that. but i've pre-paintedit, and it's a sculpture here just a little tooth bite. oh, look. so the first thing tobecome a zombie is to get infected in some way. ah. so we're gonna say zombie bite. ah,infection. and earlier today we created a small army of zombies, about six of them inan hour. and we used anything from oats and latex and tissue paper and latex and moretissue paper and latex. so what we're gonna

do is put a bite here, probably on this larynxarea. so i'm gonna use some adhesive -- it's very sticky. it comes off with special removercalled napalm. ah, so i get to wear some napalm. and, again, this is gelatin. it can sweatoff, so it's not foolproof that it's gonna last all day. and this stuff is like contactcement. so i put it on one piece here and i put it on the other piece. and it will -- oncethe two pieces are dry they will adhere to each other. so now, we're gonna see here -- let'ssee kinda how this fits here. so we gotta bite. and depending on how much time you havewill depend on how much these edges can get blended. if the mold has thick edges thenyou can't ever blend a thick edge mold. so we try to get these as thin possible. so they'repaper thin at the edges? right, right. it

smooths all the way down to nothing, and thenyou can use what we're gonna show in a minute, some hot witch hazel, which you can get ata pharmacy or walmart. right. so now i'm gonna take this piece here and i'm gonna get underthe edges as close as possible to tie a few of these down. if you leave these on the ground,one of these dogs running around might eat because it is edible. it's made of gelatin.and we'll end up painting this with -- you can paint it with rubber mask grease paint,which you can get at halloween stores. there's also alcohol activated paints, which are waterproof.the good thing about wounds and zombies is there's no -- they're not pretty. the edgescan be torn. if it's an old age makeup or something like that, it needs to be perfect.whereas what we're looking at here, you can

always add a piece of goo, and it can justlook like another wound. so it's holding on here, so you've got a good, solid bite. ican feel it. now these edges, what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna take witch hazel, which ihave here, i'm gonna heat it up in the microwave for about 12 seconds. you don't want it toget too hot. okay, i'm removing the edges with witch hazel to kind of smooth them out.so does it dissolveâ€¦ it dissolves the gelatin. it does when it's hot. if the edges are thick,though, it still won't dissolve. it'll still be a thick edge. so there's a few places -- likethis looks really good over here. i haven't got to the other side yet. it's secure andit should last for awhile. and then once we're done with this, i'm gonna slightly powderit. and then you can use any kind of baby

powder, talc. so this is just some talc i'mgonna kinda put on here to keep anything from not sticking to itself. and the good thingabout gelatin is it's translucent like skin. you can make it out of foam as well, and foamis not -- it's, you know, opaque. it's too opaque. correct, so you can't see throughit. well, this is the same color as skin if you can put a little makeup, just normal cakemakeup, and it'll kinda blend to your skin. so this is just a little bit yellower thanyou are, not too bad. but we'll just paint it here. it just means it's jaundiced. soi'm gonna find a good color. and you can use rubber mask grease paint. again, alcohol.i'm just gonna put in some. i've already sort of tinted it that red color. if you're gonnamake a makeup piece like this, first, you

need to have a place to sculpt the bite on,which you can use a slab of wood, anything, and you use clay, then you need to make anegative of that clay so then you have a negative of your mold. then you fill that up with yourgelatin. and i'm gonna put some purple. wounds and things aren't just always red. that'sthe thing, a lot of times less is more, no pun intended, in make up. a lot of peoplejust cake it on. and this morning, we were putting on makeup on their faces and on oneof them used simply latex and toilet paper, and on another one we used oats. you can usesandpaper, anything to give texture. and then you can add like scabs and stuff. so, here,i'm just adding some subtle layers of paint. so now, get a little purple to give kind ofa bruising color. and so like now, if i wanted

to, i could go up here and create kind ofsome darker kind of purple, veiny, depending on what kind of zombie it is, you can do somereally subtle bruising. it's really just how much time you wanna spend on each area. i'mgonna fill this up with some blood gel. don't skimp on the blood gel. looks like the justgot bit. so inside each toothâ€¦ it's feeling that way. like, if you look at it, insideeach tooth mark i'm gonna put a little goo of this. i'm not just gonna fill up just everybit of it or you might as well throw on a mask of jelly on his neck. and in the endwe can always, you know, if we wanted to, get a brush and splatter like it's sprayedand spewed up everywhere all over his neck. but you can see, it kind of blends here, andlike at this little edge here it doesn't quite

smooth, we can add just this little bloodpiece to hide that. so now he's got a bite. you know, pretty good little hole in his neck.this is a good example of a quick and dirty makeup that you can do with anything out ofyour kitchen and scare your dinner guests. i love it. there we go. so we can do littleabrasions. it's like i fell off my bicycle while zombies where chasing me. that's a goodpoint. so he's got a little chin abrasion there, maybe where he fell off a bike, andthen the zombies attacked him after he couldn't get up fast enough. say you conked your head,then there'd maybe be like a slight pink. again, makeup, you don't wanna add too much.this is just a subtle layer here that's giving him kind of a burned look. then we're gonnaadd little bit, a little bit more red, but

not much. a lot of times i'll use q-tips ori'll use sponges or the ends of fat brushes. so now it looks just a little irritated. soto make it actually look like a bruise, we need some blue. and one thing you can do witha bruise, to make a bruise look like it's sticking out further, is you can always adda lighter ring around it, and it gives you the illusion of depth. so we got a littlebump there. let's take a little of this kind of purple here. this is a similar look youcan do for someone who's cold. so now he's got kind of this like allergy nose, as we'llcall it for the moment. and i'm gonna add some vein, litle blue veins. if you wannaclose your eyes, i'm gonna do a little bit here just in the eyes. and this is more ofa red tone. and one thing we wanna make sure

we wanna do is not stop with a hard line,we wanna kinda get it smoothed out or it'll look like makeup. now i'm using the greasepaint becasue we're going around the eyes. i did not wanna use any of the alchohol stuffbecause alcohol around the eyes isn't good. and we tested this beforehand to make surethat there were no allergies because some people do have allergies to different things,so. was it it stage one of zombie, just sort of getting sick. you just got bit, so we'regoing too far with this. right now i think that's a good look for your face. but, say,what would happen if we brought up the diease from the neck that's going to this area. soi'm gonna take this color that we started down there and kind of start bringing it up.following the path of contagion. now if you

welcome back! today iâ€™m going to make a japanese-stylebed. these beds are lower than western ones, with the mattress embedded in a wooden frame. iâ€™ve tried to come up with a design thatwould be easy to make using plywood, although other kinds of wooden sheets could also be used. besides, this design is easy to assemble and disassemble, quite convenient if we want to move. iâ€™ve designed two types of bed. this one is meant to be adapted to a common metal bed frame which you can find in any store. as you can see, the bed frame rests on these four corners which, in turn, join all the pieces.

the other bed design is of the same size. however, for this design weâ€™ll use a homemadeplywood frame. in this video iâ€™ll show you how i made thefirst of the two models, although both beds have similar makes. by changing the length of some pieces we canadapt this design to any bed size. now letâ€™s take a look at how i made it. this time around, in order to save time iâ€™veordered some pre-cut pieces from the same warehouse where i bought the board, sincethe parts are quite large. iâ€™ll start by cutting these pieces at anangle.

theyâ€™ll be used to make the headboard thicker. iâ€™ll also machine this rebate to work aroundthe floor plinth. iâ€™ll also glue these pieces together, ontowhich i will later screw the bed side rails. now i glue the three upper side rails togetherto make them thicker. i machine these pieces like this and put themin place with glue. i sand these parts now that itâ€™s easierand screw the bed side rails in like this. now i can start assembling the bed. i cut these two pieces in half to make foursupports for the bed frame. first i screw this one onto the side rails,keeping it 1mm away from the edge.

i remove the piece and then screw it ontothe headboard. this way, when screwing it back on, the screwswill put pressure and the joint between the side rail and the headboard will be tighter. iâ€™ll use the same system for the back. iâ€™ve numbered all the corners to make futureassemblies easier. with these last screws i finish putting thebed together. now itâ€™s time to set up the nightstands. i glue these parts together and add a littlesalt to stop them from moving due to the glueâ€™s viscosity. once the glue is dry, i sand the inner partnow that itâ€™s easier

and continue assembling the nightstands. i finish sanding all the pieces that makeup the bed and apply three coats of satin water-based varnish. iâ€™m going to put everything back togetherat the workshop to see what the finished bed looks like. i love how the edge of the plywood looks. of course, we could apply some dye to change the color, but i like the natural look of birch wood.

when people thing of japan, they don't normally picture an idillic cabin somewhere out in the woods. it's more the hustle and bustle of big cities like tokyo that gets all the attention. today though we have travelled to sakuho, to visit a downsized design that the countryside has to offer. b: hello daigo d: hi b: nice to meet you (vo) daigo built this incredible tiny cottage alongside friends from school on some unused family land.

the project started out as a get-away forthe group but later on became a home for daigo and his young family. this stunning project is entirely off thegrid and was built largely from natural materials that were sourced from the nearby forest. b: we're quite remote right now, we're in the mountains, what about things like electricity and water, where does that come from? d: there are no services, electricity is from the two solar panels, we can use lights and a small refrigerator. water we get from a stream in the mountains.

b: what about toilets and waste here, what do you do for that? d: it's kind of composted. b: ah, okay. great, well can we have a look inside thehouse? d: yes! b: this door is lovely! d: yeah, it's the mountain. you see that big mountain? the name is mt morei and here it's the shape.

b: well, let's have a look inside! this is so cosy! and we're obviously in the middle of winterin japan right now. it is freezing outside but it is lovely andwarm in here. having that little stove in the corner isjust like a little touch of magic here, isn't t? d: yes, it's a very small one. b: the design of this, it's almost european isn'tit? d: yeah, that's right. because i stayed in finland, i was impressedby finnish design and after i stayed in finland

i came back to japan and made the interior,so it's finnish design. so this house, here is the living room, andhere is for study and work. b: although i don't know if you could get anystudy done when you're looking out at that view. that is just beautiful! my eyes could never look at a computer screenwhen that mountain vista is in the background. d: yeah, work is very fun for me here. b: i bet! and a lovely dining area over here. d: yes, kitchen, kitchen counter and dining.

so we can eat and we can drink. b: i especially like how you've done the kitchencounter. that's very unusual. d: thank-you! cooking is very fun. my wife, my family they look at me and i cookhere and i feel i'm master of cafe. i can cook delicious food here. b: so how big is this place actually? what are the dimensions?

d: 5.4 meters and 3.5 meters. b: it's actually a perfect size for a littlecabin in the woods, isn't it? d: thank-you. b: and i notice over there you've got some hammocksas-well. that's a really cool feature! d: yeah set here, and here. b: can i have a go? d: yeah, of course!

b: okay. let's try. if i ever build a cabin in the woods i haveto include one of these! i absolutely love it. so for sleeping you've got the area upstairsas-well. d: yes. b: great, can we have a look at that? d: yeah of course. b: oh this space is absolutely lovely!

when you think of a sleeping loft in a logcabin this is everything that you would hope the space to be, isn't it? you've got incredible views out here, reallycosy bed, you can still see down to the wood-fire though. absolutely magic. d: yeah, i like this smaller space. and when sleeping here we can see the starsthrough the window. b: do you think that as time goes on in japanmore people will build homes like this? d: yes, i think so. in japan, in the countryside there is a lotof unused land, unused fields.

i think many people will make a cottage likethis. i don't have knowledge, it's takes a longtime but we can do it. b: and what about the cost of this home? what did this actually cost you to build? d: about $16,000. b: $16,000, that's about â¥2,000,000. d: yes, â¥2,000,000. b: that really is so affordable isn't it? and it just goes to show that if you're willingto be a little bit creative, you can build

a really beautiful home for yourself withouta lot of money. d: yes, that's right. it takes time but it's very fun and i canshow the people, society, that the house is very small but very happy and comfortableand very warm. the relationship with my wife or with familyis better than in a big house. b: daigo, this home is really beautiful. as a cabin in the woods this is an absolutedream that you have created here. thank-you very much for showing me around. d: thank-you very much.

for this project iâ€™m going to show you howto forge a â€œmini master swordâ€, out of styrofoam. make one just for fun and cosplay.or bury it in a bucket of sand, and turn it into solid metal. however you wield your power,is completely up to you, because with this legendary sword, you are the master. letâ€™s begin this project, with another sheetof dollar store foam board, and the hot-wire â€œstyro-slicerâ€ i showed you how to buildin a previous project. youâ€™ll also need this â€œmini master swordâ€template, i drew in photoshop. and you can have it for free, if you just say thank you,and check the description for a link. now you probably remember that dollar storefoam board is just a layer of foam, sandwiched

between two pieces of paper, and if we carefullyuse a fingernail to pull up on one of the corners, the paper peels right off, with hardlyany trouble at all. alright, letâ€™s get busy cutting out allthe individual pieces from the template. and if you want to save yourself from having toglue them on, then simply print your templates on full page label paper instead. cut all the shapes out, as cleanly and neatlyas you can, then go find a glue stick, so we can stick them firmly onto the foam board,next. now when youâ€™re adding glue to the backof the paper templates, you donâ€™t actually need to smear the entire piece of paper. thatwill only make it trickier to get off later on.

so just add a generous coating around theedges instead, then take time to position the template carefully on the foam-board,pressing the edges down as smoothly as you can get them. and if you utilize the space by keeping thepieces close together, youâ€™ll be able to get 3 swords, from one board. if everything looks smooth and secure, thengo ahead and power up the â€œstyro-slicerâ€. the â€œstyro-slicerâ€ is a homemade hot-wirefoam cutting factory, that has adjustable power settings, for slicing styrofoam of allshapes and sizes, and can probably create any custom cosplay, or foam prop you can thinkup. alright, the first thing we need to do withthis foam board, is chop the templates down, into manageable pieces. i typically slide the foam up and down thewire a few times, to rough out the foam pieces

a little faster, then carefully trace eachof the shapes, once theyâ€™re smaller, and easier to work with. now the two base blades need some really specialattention, so letâ€™s focus on them next. tracing around the edges of just the hilt,and the handles first, you can see the hot-wire slices easily though the foam, but doesnâ€™tactually go through the paper. thatâ€™s really cool, because it leaves uswith a really smooth, and professional looking cut. now hopefully you didnâ€™t cut the blade outyet, because thereâ€™s a cool little trick iâ€™m going to show you for doing that next. move the arm of the â€œstyro-slicerâ€ tothe side of the cutting base, then slide the wire back into the center of the work surface,and youâ€™ll see, you can adjust the angle

of the wire. how cool is that? this means, that now we can give our bladea nice beveled edge. so set the wire around 45âº and double-check itâ€™s pointing awayfrom you, then lay the sword flat on the cutting base, and trace the blade. keep the wire as perpendicular to the linesof the template as you can, then carefully trace the edges in four separate passes. when youâ€™ve made it around to the otherside of the hilt, then stop, and pull the sword straight back toward you, to releasethe wire. go ahead and peel the styrofoam off, fromaround the edges, and take a look, at that cool beveled blade.

and now that youâ€™ve got the hang of it,go ahead and do the other sword the same way, so we can move on to modifying, the thicknessof the handle next. now for this next trick, youâ€™re going toneed to adjust the blade of the â€œstyro-slicerâ€ so it hangs horizontally over the cuttingbase. and just like that, youâ€™ve got the ability to cut foam bits, in half. the blade can adjust to any thickness youwant, but for simplicity, weâ€™ll just be cutting a few select pieces, in half. the only parts that actually need to be downsized,are the 2 small blades, and the 2 handle grips, which you can see leave us with 4 of each.but you can scrap the ones with paper glued to them, because we wonâ€™t be needing themanymore.

alight the pieces are all cut to shape, soletâ€™s peel the paper templates off the foam, and if youâ€™re careful not to rip the paper,you can actually use the templates again, to make another sword. now before going any further, itâ€™s a goodidea to layout all the pieces on a table to make sure theyâ€™re all there. you should have 28 pieces altogether, and if you do,then letâ€™s get busy gluing them together. thereâ€™s a little diagram on the templatethat shows how the finished sword is going to look. so start assembling it by layingone of the base blades flat on a table, and gluing the hilt to the top. take a little time to adjust the bottom andthe sides so they match up with the base blade on the bottom. then simply follow the pattern for the restof the pieces, and you should end up with two completed sides of the sword, that lookidentical.

now simply add a generous amount glue, tothe flat sides on the bottom, then gently, but firmly, seal them together. thatâ€™s pretty much it. all thatâ€™s leftfor finishing our â€œmaster swordâ€ now, is carving out the tri-force. use a pair of scissors, or an x-acto knifeto carefully draw the 3 lines, to form a triangle in the middle, then carve the little channelsas deep as you like. with that final step, your 3d foam sword isfinished, and of course you can get creative, and customize it any way you want. i gently sanded the sword with a 220 gritsanding sponge, to smooth down any imperfections, making our little homemade creation, looksurprisingly professional.

now before you get too crazy with your sword,itâ€™s a good idea to leave it overnight so the glue has a chance to dry completely. and if you plan on turning your sword intoaluminum, youâ€™re going to need a foam riser like this as well. so you might as well makeone of those, while youâ€™re waiting. simply cut the riser to whatever length youneed, then bury the sword in a bucket of sand and pour hot molten aluminum overtop. youâ€™ll see the styrofoam vaporizes instantlyfrom the extreme temperature, allowing the metal to flow in and take its place, beforethe sand even has a chance to collapse. after 5-10 minutes of cooling, the metal willstill be scalding hot, but should be hard

[intro music] we want to give a shout-outto amanda the panda. thanks for the request and just craft it. first we want to show yousome of the goodies we got. the first store was justice. we found these cute little dollsized notebooks. they also had these surprise emoji figurines. it comes with two in a bag. so let's open it up and see which ones we got. here they are. so it's cool because theycan actually stand up, and we use them as bookends in the video. leave us a commentif you can tell us what two emoji's these are. they also had several emoji bean bagsand they are the perfect size for your american girl doll. so we got a few of those. and thenthey had these emoji erasers. it comes with

six in a pack, and they had several differentoptions to choose from. now, some of the pillows on the bed came from mcdonalds and some ofthem we made from our emoji pillow video. we looked everywhere for emoji fabric butwe just couldn't find any. so we had to get creative. we found these leggings at walmart.we got the largest size they had. that way it gave us more material to work with. wecut them up and we made a blanket for the bed and also a cushion for our doggy bed.the over sized floor pillow came from walmart and the skateboard came from the dollar tree.we just put a sticker printable on top. now these hanging photos are so adorable. so whatwe did was made a printable and you can print them yourself. just go to our blog. and thenuse the american girl magazine to cut out

little images of your dolls, and then youcan place them right in the square of the photos. just use a glue stick. push them on.you can even laminate them if you want them to look shiny. now cut them out and hang themup. for some of the wall decor, we took different size buttons and bottle caps, printed outsome fun emoji's and all we did was glue them to the top of the caps and hang them on thewall. and its fun that they are different sizes and colors, becuase it gives it thatpop on the wall. and then for something a little different, we took these leftover halfstyrofoam balls from our bb-8 video, painted them all yellow and then painted the facesof the emoji's we wanted right on top. now painting can be a bit tricky, so you can alsodraw the faces on with markers.

[ music ] and for the finishing touch, we painted the roomdesigner's nails with emoji's. now again this can be tricky. first we painted the nailsa light blue. then for the circle face emoji's we used a q-tip and painted them yellow. sojust put yellow dots on the nails. and then for the faces like the eyes, the nose, themouths, the winky, the kissys, we used a size 00 paint brush and toothpicks. just be sureto wash your paint brush with nail-polish remover when you are done. and be patient,becasue these are really tiny faces you are painting onto your nails. and for fun, leave us a comment with what 10 emoji's you would paint on your nails.

(upbeat music) - [narrator] hey guys,welcome back to the channel. it's tresha and i'mgoing to show you quickly how you can transformclothespins from the dollar tree into a beautiful work of art. you will need to grab threepacks of the clothespins in order to make one of them. in addition to theclothespins you will also need a four inch, eight inch and12 inch embroidery hoop.

in preparation you want to unscrew each of the embroidery hoops and separate them. oh, and don't forget to hitthe like button and share this video with others. the first step is to add theclothespins to the small hoop. i added 20 clothespins to mine. the next step is to addwood glue to the tips. the wood glue that i'musing is called rapidfuse and it's specifically for wood.

the great thing aboutthis glue is that it sets in 30 seconds and cures in30 minutes, but you can use any wood glue of yourchoice, totally up to you. now, we are ready to attachit to the medium hoop. simply place it on top. i'm making sure myclothespins are pressed down as well as, i have itcentered in the middle of the medium hoop. be sure to let it dryfor a couple of minutes

before moving on to the next step. now, we're ready to addclothespins to the medium hoop. simply place a clothespin inthe middle of the clothespins you have on top. next, we're going to flip itover and add glue to the tips. before the glue dries,make sure you flip it over and attach it to the large hoop. now, it's time to add more clothespins. but, this time we're goingto add two in between

the other clothespins. now, i'm just gonna flip it back over. this step is optional. i decided to add wireto ensure that the hoops stay securely together. the wire is somethingelse that i purchased at the dollar tree, soall you gonna do is just feed the wire throughand just tie it together and then just snip the ends off.

another idea is to add amirror to the face of it if you would like, butfor me, i decided to leave it off this time. for me, i decided to addcolor to it, so first i'm going to add a primer. i decided to use the kilz odorless primer. it fills in the wood grains. it helps the paint to adhere to the wood and it reduces the amountof paint that i use.

you wanna do this to thefront and back of the piece. and then, after it dries,you want to spray paint and i use this rust-oleumsilver metallic spray paint and it was only like$2.98, but you can also use any spray paint of yourchoosing, totally up to you. once you're finishedjust let it dry and then hang it on the wall. guys, i can't believeclothespins can be so beautiful. don't you agree?

hello everyone so in today's video i am doing a little bit of a christmas easy diy home touches little things you can do that you might not have thought about video i don't think it's gonna be called that in the title but that is essentially what it is as you know christmas is one of my most favorite times of the year in terms of content to watch everyone's moods decoration music films food

it's basically just the best time of year and one of the things i also really love about christmas is getting a bit crafty and making your space feel festive and putting your stamp on things and i have a few little things that i have done this year that i really really wanted to share with you one of the first things i am going to share with you is drying oranges now this is something that my mom always used to do and i remember the house smelling amazing it's so so simple as well

and it's not only just the best to fill your home with the scent of like orange and like christmas loveliness, but it's also great to use for decoration all you will need are some oranges you can go for some big ones and some slightly smaller ones it's quite nice to have a bit of a variation, and you just want to slice these then using kitchen roll or a kitchen towel or a tea towel or you can just leave them out if you have a little bit more time to do it you basically want to get as much of the orange juice out as possible because the whole idea is that you're drying out the oranges and so if you can take out a little bit of excess juice before you put them in the oven then that does make it a little bit easier

so you just want to kind of like dab them and press the paper down don't push too hard like don't like completely mash them up but you just want to try and get rid of any of the juice you don't want to get a baking tray and a sheet of baking paper on the top and you just want to lay out your oranges ready to go into the oven i'm actually using my auger for this this is like the first thing i'm actually putting my auger and in the lowest temperature oven so it's not the warming oven but it's the one just above that

i'm still learning how to use my auger if you don't have an auger basically you don't want to burn them you don't want them to go crispy so you need to set your oven to a very low temperature? you don't want them to come out of the oven and look like weird orange crisps so very very low heat, i would say like a hundred degrees centigrade or just a very low gas mark you basically want to leave them in there for a couple of hours you can keep on checking on them and seeing you know how they're getting on but that is basically it and then once they are done

you just want to take them out leave them to cool down maybe to dry out a little bit more, and then you can use them to your heart's content this kind of segues into my next little diy fun section homey homey diy section and that is styling up your mantelpiece there are so many different ways to do this and everyone has their own kind of decor style so this is just how i've done one of mine i have actually got multiple fireplaces, and you bet i'm gonna decorate each one it's not gonna be any fireplace in my house that doesn't have something on it

i like to start by buying like a garland so you can get these pretty much anywhere or you can make them yourself with real foliage or you can buy real foliage especially around the start of december they start selling them in the places where you buy your christmas trees from and you can buy the stuff in like big old bundles, so you can get things like holly? ivy and also just bits of like christmas tree and you can do it that way which i have done previous years it just doesn't seem to last as long and it starts to look quite limp quite quickly so it depends what kind of style you're going for does smell amazing though? i have to say the smell of those is great i think closer to christmas

i will probably go and get some like cuttings and distribute those around the house but for now i thought it was best to stick with a garland that was not real, so that it would actually last until christmas this one. i got from john lewis, and it has copper baubles on it acorns, and it's really nice and festive, and i really liked it, but it is nice to personalize it and customize it a little bit more to fit with the rest of the room that you are putting it in i used these little gold fern leaves, which i also got i'd get me some. thyme nervous

i think i did but you can buy like things like this from hobby craft garden centers you name it this time of year someone will have it and i just cut these up and place these amongst the garland i also used my dried oranges and popped these in as well just because they smell amazing and they look really fast 'iv and i think they give it like that little bit of christmas touch i always think if you've got a mantelpiece you need some candles so i've got these candlesticks that i've popped on the end. there's nothing like an authentic candle on a mantelpiece to really put you in a cozy mood, and then these two little i think they're gnomes but at this time of year, i think they pass as little father christmas's. we're actually a

housewarming gift from a friend who made these herself and they are the cutest thing i've ever seen and they sat proudly on the other end of the mantelpiece i would absolutely love to see how you guys style up your mantel pieces at this time of year everyone has like a different theme some people keep it quite subtle some people go a bit more likes candy some people love like the whole shebang lights the biggest garland's you've ever seen massive bull balls like i'd love to know what your style is also tag me in some pictures because i'd love to see the next fun little idea i had was to get a bit crafty with christmas photos i'm hugely sentimental, and i love photographs anyway

and my phone is full of christmas photos over the years that i've never really printed and done anything with because i kind of just like look at them every now and then when i'm like scrolling back through and i'm like oh memories so i thought it would be really nice as i am doing this video with hp who i actually talked about last year this is the hp sprocket, and it is a little printer that you can print from an app from your phone print out these adorable little photos, but this year they have this really cool limited edition gift box which would be the perfect gift since christmas is coming inside it you get the actual sprocket which i have out because i've been using it this adorable little case so that you can keep it protected in your handbag this really cute little photo album, so you can stick your photos in there, and you also get the photo paper which i have used up you can also design your own personal skin that you can stick

to the sprocket, which i think is so cool you can personalize it you can use any photo you like and stick it on your actress pocket so using the sprocket i printed out lots of the photos on my camera roll. it's super easy there's no ink required and i love this idea so you can either attach your christmassy photos on a piece of string or a piece of tinsel if you're going to go for tinsel on your tree, and you can just attach them randomly onto the tinsel or onto the string with some pegs i have these cute little father christmas pegs, which i think i got from tiger but you can use like anything really or if that is not an option for you

maybe you don't have as many that you can string on a garland you can just peg them straight on to your tree, which i actually ended up doing because i thought this looked so cute and it's nice that all those photos have lovely christmas memories for me so every time i look at that christmas tree now it makes me feel more like 10 times more festive because i actually remember the christmassy moments that are on the tree i feel like this is definitely something going forward i can keep adding to every year you can just keep adding the photos that you have of christmas going it's great. i love it and because these photos can also be used as stickers i thought it would be perfect for putting on

presents so i do like getting quite crafty for christmas presents and going like all out with different wrapping papers but there is something quite nice about just using brown paper and doodling with a sharpie, i mean until i filmed this video. i thought i wasn't okay like doodler turns out i suck so i would advise that you have some sort of plan of what you're gonna draw or maybe like repetition would be quite nice or maybe you're just like a much better drawer than i am but i really loved sticking on the photos so for papi's present i used a photo of me and papi last year when we went to buy our christmas tree and for jose. i put a picture of me joe and nala when we were visiting my dad last christmas and then i just doodle over them and

ruined it but i feel like your designs could be a lot cooler. i think it's just a really nice interesting way of having that person know that that present is from you because you're also in the photo and you know that that present is a hundred percent for them but you don't have to like try and find like a tiny gift tag. where someone's put like a p from zed you know what i mean it's very visual like it's very like this is your present from me because here we are buying our christmas tree last year i hope you like it

i also just really like what this looks like i think it looks very sleek and it's very easily portable you can also get this in black and red but that is sold like individually the one in the gift box which personally i do think is the prettier one is is this one i feel like this is one of those gadgets where you're like you never know you needed it until you had it and then you will then you felt that everyone else should have one. do you know what i mean? i have persuaded so many friends to buy these in fact. i bought one of these for mark for christmas last year so there you go the next thing that i thought was worth mentioning was also something that i love doing i love like

making little personalizable things for friends and family and the first thing that i have done and this is because a lot of my friends are coming to stay it towards the end of november and we're having like a pre christmas christmas, and i'm so excited about it we're doing secret santa so that's like one present per person, but because they're coming to stay at my house i wanted to make it feel special and kind of like we were all actually having a christmas so i really hope they don't watch this video as this is gonna really ruin the surprise

oh, well, so what i have done is i bought these stockings you can buy cheaper stockings, and then you can either stitch if you're like very like handy and you have like sewing machine, and you love things like and you have a bit more time i would totally recommend either making the stocking from scratch it's a pretty simple template and you can get quite creative with which fabrics you want to use or you can buy a stocking and then stick on some lettering so last year although it was a year before two years ago myself and alfie bought big red fluffy stockings for his family and we actually bought iron-on gold letters, and we spent christmas eve ironing on everyone's names letter by letter and that was actually really fun

and i like doing things like that because it gives it a really nice like personal touch. this year i found personalized letter stockings on matalin and they were only eight pounds, so i was like oh, that's actually a really good price i quite like the look at these so i picked up one for every initial of my friends and i started thinking about what i could put in there this is also a really great idea for a secret santa because if you know the person but you don't know too much about them, and you have like a certain budget it's quite nice to buy like a couple of little things to put inside something like that so if you had a secret santa and the budget was twenty you could spend eight on the stocking and then

fill it with lots of other little bits and pieces so for my friends i bought them a small bottle of prosecco because nothing says christmas like a little glass of bubbles and i also put some chocolate pennies in there i've just i just feel like you can't do a stocking without using chocolate coins. i feel like that's like christmas like sacrilege so chocolate coins went in then i also bought little selection packs now growing up i always had selection boxes in my sacks. we always had sacks we never had stockings and those were like the first thing you pulled out and like all day you would keep going back to your selection box and being like which chocolate bar shall i eat next i don't know whether that's a

thing with everyone, but that's certainly like a thing with me, so i thought i would share that joy, i also bought five different christmas lush bath bombs and i placed these in tiny little christmas treat bags and sealed them with a sticker so that each person has a different bath bomb i also bought novelty hats. i've remembered. i bought some really funny novelty hats from asda and i was gonna put a different one in each stocking also so that when people are going through their stockings they have something funny to put on and next year no doubt those are the photos that will be going up on the tree alongside all the other ones the next thing is

staircases now. i know not everybody decorates their staircase, but for me. i feel like this was always a very exciting part to decorate i just remember being a child and walking down the stairs on christmas morning and like all the lights are twinkling on the stairs and you just would be so excited to walk into the living room and see what was underneath the christmas tree and i don't know why but i just think the staircase is just a great place to decorate most years i've just put garlands on the staircase with fairy lights, but last year i was reading a christmas magazine it was after christmas and there was a photo in it of a staircase a really like lovely grand staircase in like a

edwardian style property and they had huge big white paper? decorations going up the banister and i remember thinking oh my god that looks amazing i wonder if i can do that in the new house when we have christmas there what i stupidly didn't do is take a picture of it, so i've kind of had to go from memory but i just love what it looks like it's quite out there. i do feel like if you don't feel so brave. you don't have to do as many or you could mix it up and use lots of different colors i did see one on pinterest where they'd used black and green as well as white and that looked really cool

especially if you have like a theme running through your house and also paper decorations are not too expensive you can even make some of them yourself if you have the time, or if you have the skill i feel like it's a really easy quick way yet it looks really effective, and it looks like someone's come into your house and done it for you, and i really really like doing it i think it looks amazing i think this is the best my stairs have ever looked at christmas time and that makes me really happy and last but by no means least is a christmas eve box ice so many people doing these mostly for their children but i think that there is scope to create adult ones for sure normally every christmas eve

we have our tradition of matching pajamas slippers or cozy socks dressing gowns and i guess that's mostly where we get to but i thought it would be nice since we're doing christmas at our house this year to lay out a box for each person with their pajamas with some cozy socks with a dressing-gown then i also thought about other things i could incorporate into that which were very like christmas eve so in this box i've also put the night before christmas book which i think is very apt i'm not expecting alfie's dad to whip that book out and sit there reading it

but i think if you're creating this for one person and that works really nicely or if it's someone that's a bit younger putting that book in is really really cute then i think it is very important to have a christmas mug and some form of hot chocolate you can buy the cute little sachets if you know what someone's favorite hot chocolate is you can put those inside the mugs for each person and i also got some decorate your own gingerbread because who doesn't want to decorate a gingerbread man on christmas eve i feel like it's perfect whilst you are decorating your gingerbread, man you could have a christmas film on i want to try and get everyone's favorite christmas film

whether they get time to watch it that evening or not i think it would be nice for all of us to have a different one and for us to decide which one we watch or just for them to keep and have next year since i want to try and get people's favorite christmas film i popped arthur christmas in mine because i think it is an amazing amazing film highly recommend seeing that if you haven't seen it yet terry's chocolate orange like you, it's not christmas unless you've got a terry's chocolate orange so i had to put one of those in there also some chocolate coins because again i don't feel like you can do a christmas hamper or a christmas stocking without adding chocolate coins and then last but by no means least

i had this idea where everyone has like their top three four favorites from every select action of christmas chocolates so we have celebrations miniature heroes quality streets and roses and those are like the top four that kind of most households will have at least one or two of these tins in that house of course i've gone overboard and i've bought all four but that is also because i really wanted to pick each person's favorite now it might require a little bit of like detective work, or if you just know someone really really well i guess it's the ultimate test to know which ones are their favorites from each each tin so i've picked out a couple that i know

someone would like and pop them in a little treat bag and sealed it with a sticker and also put that on there because there's also, not enough chocolate in this box i just thought it would be nice to eat those whilst watching the christmas film in our matching pj's our comfy socks our dressing gowns i do feel like half the fun of christmas is christmas eve, so i really like making that a huge part of the whole christmas experience, and i think the christmas eve boxes just give it that like extra personal touch and i just really like them and that is everything that i wanted to share with you today i would absolutely love to know if there's anything that you do around

hi, i'm jeffrey moss, with pottery barn. as summer rolls back around, we're planning gatherings to celebrate the warm weather season. inspired by life at the seashore, we've pulled together dinnerware and linens in oceanic hues, and silvery pieces which make whimsical reference to sea life. we're also taking a dip into a hot culinary trend, and designing one course of our meal around one of the oldest seasonings for food...salt. for an unexpected and entertaining twist to our party, we're using blocks of pink himalayan salt. blocks of salt are gorgeous when they catch light and fire up in variegated hues ranging from light pink to deep red, and they can be put to work as cooking surfaces

and self-seasoning serving pieces. slabs of himalayan salt can withstand extreme temperatures without cracking meaning you can heat them for cooking. to prepare the scallops we're serving, heat a salt block to five hundred degrees in your oven. place the heated block on your stove top, coat sea scallops with olive and cracked peppercorns, then drop onto the block. when the scallops are seared to perfection on both sides, squeeze lime and lemon juice over them and garnish with shreds of citrus zest. once the preparation is done, you can use a pottery barn wood paddle pedestal to present the salt block at the table.

small round salt slabs can be used for individual servings, and provide a subtle salt flavor quite unlike using ground or flake salt. for place cards that capitalize on the salty top note of our menu, you can download these at potterybarn.com and trim, or write and stamp each guest's name, then use pottery barn's turtle salt cellars filled with finishing salt, for the final presentation. one of my favorite cocktails, especially in summertime, is a variation on the greyhound, the salty dog. traditionally, the salty dog is vodka and grapefruit juice, served on the rocks with a salted rim, but gin or tequila may also be used. for our salty dogs, i used a rim of alaea hawaiian sea salt,

mixed with a little chipotle pepper for beautiful color and extra zing, and premixed the juice and spirits, making it easy to refresh guests' cocktails. to compliment the salt flavors used for the meal, we're pouring refreshingly floral and light-bodied riesling, kept on ice throughout the party in pottery barn's woven canoe cooler. the table is beautifully set, the meal is prepped, the guest invited. in true summertime style, finish off your table with a fresh bouquet of flowers from the garden, and let the good times roll. cheers!

holidays, christmas, in the white house overthe years. we partner with these programs with the national archives from time to timeand have had the privilege and pleasure of working with the archivist going back almost20 years. it's wonderful to have this opportunity to continue in this format.the white house historical association is a nonprofit non-partisan organization foundedby mrs.kennedy in 1961. and our mission is very simple. it's to be the private partnerto the public white house to provide the financial resources to make possible the preservation,restoration, the conservation of the state rooms of the white house, those rooms thatare open to the public, and to provide funds to the acquisition of furnishings and decorativearts to the permanent white house collection.

we're privileged to do that as the privatepartner to the white house. and over the past 53 years we've had the opportunity to contributeover $42 millieon to that work. we're privately funded. we're non-partisan. we raise thatmoney principally by our famous little white house christmas ornament. and we're very happythat our friends of the archives are making these available through your wonderful shophere. get them quickly because this year we're going to sell out before christmas.we've done these for 33 years. they're made by this wonderful american company in rhodeisland. this is the ornament that honors president harding. we honor presidents in sequence.so we're in our trifecta of interesting presidents. we have harding, coolidge, and hoover. buti promise you that next year's ornament is

going to be the most exciting ornament yet.the national archives is a wonderful organization. they are truly the source, a great source,for american history not only in the nation's capital but, as the archivist mentioned, inthese wonderful network of presidential libraries from coast-to-coast. and we have the opportunityto partner with many of them and work closely with them.as our panelists come out tonight, i'd like to reiterate who is going to be with us. wehave tim gunn, who's been a good friend of the archives and a good friend to the whitehouse historical association. he is a native washingtonian. and he is -- he has had hisown personal experience of decorating the white house that he'll tell us about.lynda johnson robb is the daughter of the

president and mrs. johnson. and mrs. johnsonwas actually, herself, an extraordinary contributor to the preservation and restoration of thewhite house following mrs. kennedy. and mrs.johnson is due a great deal of credit and respectfor her contributions to the white house as first lady. and i'm interested to hear aboutthe wedding of the robbs. we have senator robb with us tonight. took place in the christmasseason a few years ago. gary walters is a great american public servant.gary served in the white house for 37 years and was the chief usher. and for those ofyou who don't know, the chief usher in the white house is sort of like the orchestraconductor that makes everything happen and makes everything harmonious, or tries to,that happens in the white house. and gary,

in full disclosure, is a member of the whitehouse historical association board of directors. he's a great man and has wonderful insightsinto the operations of the white house as well as this behind-the-scenes wizard of ozlook as to what goes on behind the scenes when christmas is prepared for.genevieve gorder, as you know, has been host since 2009 when hgtv took over again the broadcastof the white house christmas special and has up-close, personal views of the white houseand its decorations for christmas these past five years and particularly this season. andthat program, i believe, airs on hgtv on december 14. i was at the white house today and thisyear's decorations are absolutely extraordinary. and finally, coleen christian burke, authorof "christmas with the first ladies" and has

participated in decorating the white househerself so we have a wonderful panel. they can maketheir way out. on behalf of the national archives and the white house historical association,we would like to wish each and every one of you a safe, happy, and healthy holiday seasonand all the best in 2015. thank you very much. it's great to share the holidays with allof you. i'm sure some of you are wondering: what is tim gunn doing here? well, you'llfind out a little later. and it may surprise all of you. we have a lot of visual informationfor you. we have a lot of historical information for you. we have a preview of things to come.and it's going to be a very exciting night. so welcome.we should get going with -- we have our first slide which is quite spectacular looking.the white house looks fabulous. does it not? this could not happen -- how many volunteersare there? >> depending on the year, this year i thinkit was like 106? >> yeah. we had a little over 100 this year.a lot of christmas elves.

>> i feel like there had been years wherethere were almost 300. it was swarming volunteers. >> usually about 100>> it's a beehive. >> tim gunn: gary, in your experience as chiefusher, do you have to conduct the volunteers as well?>> well, i was very fortunate to have a young woman who worked for me for a number of years.her name was nancy clark. she was both right-brained and left-brained. she could put together computersfrom scratch and she could be this incredible designer. and she was the one that kind oforchestrated getting the volunteers together in association with the first ladies throughthe years and the first ladies staff.there's normally about 100 to 150 people dependingon the circumstances each year. they come

from various walks of life. most of them havesome affiliation, one form or the other, with florists, florist deliveries or studying,school. it's a wonderful group of people. they're dedicated.what's not known is in addition to the three days that it takes to decorate the white house-- >> tim gunn: it happens in three days?>> three days. usually over a weekend. >> tim gunn: good heavens.>> it closes down on friday. it usually happens saturday, sunday, monday with the first eventbeing monday evening. >> tim gunn: a real deadline. people are coming.>> it is. most volunteers come from a week to 10 days in advance and work at a remotesite, national park service site, where all

the decorations are held until they're needed.and they work for that period of time putting the decorations together. and they're labeled.when they come into the white house from the trucks -- you see them on hgtv, i'm sure.they're labeled, marked where they go. it's an ant hill for a while.>> it is like a military event. it is so organized. you wish your house ran like this. and everyvolunteer knows exactly where they're going with their box, written with what decorationit is. and they're in charge of what room and working with them.>> tim gunn: and genevieve, you know firsthand because you're hosting a special, "white housechristmas" which airs sunday. we have a preview for you. you want to set it up for us?>> it's being cut as we speak because we just

filmed this -- coleen and i just went therethis year, the day after thanksgiving. so it is the quickest edited show. so what we'regoing to see i just caught a glimpse prior to you getting here. it's very fragment. considerit top secret. >> tim gunn: top secret.>> and really cool and not mapy and weird. ok?>> tim gunn: let's see the clip. we promise there's a clip. here it comes. we're staring.we have a monitor. >> thank you for saying that.>> didn't realize we were all looking at it. >> it's very, very top secret.>> yeah. are we going to see it? >> little pine cones here and there.>> everything's smooth.

[applause]>> i promise, the show actually connects together. i don't know how we got that feed but justconsider it cool. all right. >> tim gunn: the show is about the process.>> it really is. i think most of the country is unaware that this is something that theycan volunteer to do. and i can't tell you -- i've been doing it for six years now. everyyear i go the volunteers all approach me saying this is how we found out that we could dothis, watching the show.

>> tim gunn: oh, great.>> so i'm glad that we could be a part of bringing everyone into the party and celebratingthis beautiful event that happens every year. it is quite stunning.>> that's how i found out about it. >> tim gunn: coleen, you were chosen to bethe 2014 design partner. >> yes. so i first -- nancy clark was niceenough to bring me in 2008. and then i kind of got hooked on the first ladies. i wantedto know what all of their styles were. and i ended up writing a book about it, "christmaswith the first ladies." not very original. >> tim gunn: it's to the point.>> it's to the point. i just wanted you to know what it was about. and the amazing thingwas that mrs. obama invited me back and this

year they asked me to be the design partner.>> tim gunn: what does that involve? it sounds like a heavy responsibility.>> i got to keep the secret longer. so i started working in march on the decorations and gotto hear what the first lady's initial ideas were going to be. and i got to see the processreally inside. it was just amazing. and the outcome, as we all know, is just really beautifulin fact, i see one of the gals who was on my team, susan, in the audience. an amazingvolunteer. >> i remember you.[laughter] i think you were in the clip.>> she was in the clip. but we had a great time. so this year's theme is children's winterwonderland. and just to see all of the elements

come together and how many layers, like genevievementioned, just all of the thought and the process that goes into it from the first ladydown is amazing. >> one of the things in that third clip there,the gentleman, jim, he's been there for 28 years, coming back year after year. he runsa design school. he also designs ornaments. and he comes every year and spends his timehelping first ladies with their designs for the white house.>> tim gunn: that's wonderful. gary, can we ask you, where do all of these trees comefrom? >> the trees are purchased from across thecountry. we found a gentleman up in pennsylvania who had a tree farm. the national christmastree growers association holds a biannual

meeting. it was actually at that meeting thatthey choose both this year's winner and the next year's winner. and they are by the christmastree growers association given the honor of presenting the blue ribbon tree to the whitehouse. this started in the johnson administration, the association with the national christmastree association. they also provide a tree at their giving desire for the first familyfor their own personal tree up on the second floor of the residence.but we also have this gentleman, as i said before, in pennsylvania who was growing trees.he and his father planted their first batch of christmas trees in the late 1930s. he calledthis one field that they literally abandoned a number of years ago the white house fieldbecause the white house wanted trees that

were 18 feet, six inches. that's the floor-to-ceilingmeasurement in the blue room of the white house. and we couldn't find christmas treegrowers because christmas tree growers grow trees for your homes. and how many peoplehave 18-foot ceilings? there aren't many. so it has to be tied off. the top whirl ofthe tree is tide off on the chandelier support so that the tree won't fall over. and thebottom has a very substantial standing that holds it in place and also allows us to waterthe tree. the tree is not cut until very late in the season, usually in late november, andallows it to come into the white house being very fresh.>> how do you water it? >> with a very long hose.[laughter]

i'm serious. it's a garden hose, about eight-footlong. the gardener at the white house, whose name was irv williams, been there 50 years,devised the system that the hose -- he had a tank that they held up in the air, thisvery long hose that allowed it to go into a container that contained about 15 to 20gallons of water. and irv's mantra as far as preserving the christmas tree was don'tput any additives in the water, a little clorox -->> tim gunn: yes. >> to keep the germs down. and extremely hotwater. >> tim gunn: oh.>> that keeps the capillaries of the tree open and allows it to take up the water.>> tim gunn: interesting.

>> now you know how to preserve your tree.the white house tree goes up the first week of december and stays up till new year's.and there are sometimes as many as 3,000 ornaments on the tree. and they have to support thatweight. as i'm sure others can testify, quite frequently the limbs are held together bywires from limb to limb to limb all the way to the top.>> if you have that hole in your tree -- i just learned that this year. it was so genius.they just zip tie the lower branch to the upper branch and all the trees are perfect.you can do this. >> tim gunn: what i want to point out is thescaffolding. how many of you look at this and are terrified? i am. and how many of ushave been on that scaffolding?

[laughter]the three of us? linda? they never made you? >> never let me.[laughter] >> the secret is out.>> tim gunn: and gary? >> actually, there were a group of peoplethat were dedicated as supervisors because they all had specific jobs. the people standingaround the bottom would get the ornaments that are supposed to go on the tree at variouslevels and they would put them in little baskets. then the person on the top would pull thebasket up and then put the ornaments on. now that we have so many ornaments given byvolunteers from around the country when they come to the white house, they want to knowwhere their ornament is. so we devised a system

where we put ribbons on the tree on each corner,north, south, east, and west. and we kept track of every five feet so that we couldtell mr. smith when he came in or mrs. jones that your ornament is in the west side ofthe tree, one-third of the way down. it's up to you to find exactly where it is butat least we give you a general area. >> tim gunn: but that degree of detail isremarkable. really remarkable. let's go back. this is 1902. we're lookingat the grover cleveland christmas tree in the yellow oval room. lynda, that's the secondfloor? >> yes.>> tim gunn: so not on the main level. >> it's right above the blue room.>> tim gunn: and here we see teddy roosevelt's

son, archie. he actually smuggled a smalltree into the white house and hid it in a closet in the upstairs sewing room. i don'tknow -- why did he have to smuggle it in? >> his father was a staunch conservative.at that time they did not grow trees as a crop. they grew trees in the woods. peoplewent out in the forest and cut trees and brought them home. and the president being a staunchconservative, he decided that he didn't want a tree in the house because that didn't fithis thinking on cutting down trees. >> tim gunn: he sounds like a grump.>> bah, humbug. >> grump is better than grinch when talkingabout the president. >> he made great parks, though.>> tim gunn: and here we have franklin roosevelt

and his family. and more of the rooseveltwhite house at christmas time. >> that's the east room.>> tim gunn: that's the east room? >> yeah.>> tim gunn: it looks like a bottom-heavy tree.[laughter] >> they look like heavy chandeliers.>> tim gunn: very much so. and the eisenhower white house. and we see a lot of tinsel.>> wow. [laughter]>> tim gunn: it looks tinsel heavy. >> on the top.>> that was pre-theme. [laughter]>> the theme of tinsel.

>> tim gunn: yeah. that was the theme, tinsel.they did a great job of it. then we get to the kennedy white house. andthings change here. coleen and gary, can you talk about that, about what happened at thattime? >> well, mrs. kennedy was the first firstlady who said we should have a theme. i guess if you're going to have 100,000 people overfor the holidays, you should have a theme. you should think about it. it should be unified.and the very first theme was "the nutcracker". so it was "the nutcracker" christmas.i believe that's crepe paper on the tree. >> tim gunn: it looks like it.>> i looked at it and looked at it. >> it was supposed to be ribbon. i think theyran out of ribbon and used crepe paper.

>> tim gunn: it's more affordable. i'll saythat about it. and can you tell us anything about the crechethat we see on the right? >> you want to take it?>> ok. mrs. kennedy decided that she wanted to have it in the white house.>> tim gunn: was that approved? >> and on public display. well, the familieshad private -- this was on the state floor. so she wanted to have one. she borrowed oneto be on display at the white house. and that started the tradition of the creche in thewhite house, which is on display constantly now to remind people that the white houseis a home. >> tim gunn: very nice. and more of "the nutcracker"ornaments.

>> and caroline, you have to notice how preciousshe looks in that picture. >> tim gunn: and "the nutcracker" legacy waspicked up again by the bushes in 1990. >> i think those are a little scary.[laughter] i'm just saying. they're horrifying.>> they don't have eyes. >> tim gunn: we ran through the slides earlier.the incredibly depth and skillful individual who helped pull these images said she wasbeing kind. this is actually a nice picture compared to the way some of the other ornamentslooked, that they were rather terrifying. gary, you were there.>> actually what it was is we bought the faces. they are just faces.>> tim gunn: what?

>> they are blank porcelain faces. and thedecorators, the white house florist and people from around the country, they came in, actuallyput the different dolls together. they wanted to paint the mustaches to replicate europeansoldiers at the time. and they were throughout the house. those were on the tree in the blueroom. but on each one of the vignette -- we had a vignette on each one of the tables andthe mantel pieces throughout the house that replicated "the nutcracker", different scenesfrom "the nutcracker". but those were all built specifically, all the dolls, were builtat the white house by the florist. there were six people in the florist shop.>> tim gunn: i don't know whether that makes it better or worse.[laughter]

and then in 1996 president and mrs. clintonbring back "the nutcracker" theme again. >> and the amazing thing there was chelseawas dancing in "the nutcracker" the year that they chose that as the theme.>> tim gunn: oh. well, this looks more cheerful i'm happy to say.>> evolved. >> tim gunn: and now lynda, this is your territory.here we are. >> absolutely. well, first you have to recognizethat we didn't decorate the house until december 22 because, of course, for a month you mournedthe president. so all over the white house we had all of this black crepe, you know,over the mirrors, over everything. and so then on december 22, which happens to be mymother's birthday, they tore off the crepe

and started putting everything together.for our years my father was very fiscally conservative. he said we would use the samedecorations every year. so they were like your home might be. they were old-time thingsthat everybody could have, popcorn and cranberries. after the first year we learned that cranberriesshould not be on the tree -- >> tim gunn: what happens?>> they can't take 30 days or whatever it is. they're mushy. so after that we had tohave fake cranberries or fake berries. but we had popcorn on string.>> we're wondering who strung all of that. >> oh.>> tim gunn: did you participate, lynda? >> no. i did not participate. 50 years agois so long ago. i don't remember that. but

if you got the archives bulletin, you willsee that little baby -- lucinda, stand up. >> tim gunn: there she is.[laughter] lucinda was almost 2 months old.>> tim gunn: i'm going to fast forward. >> you have it? another time?>> tim gunn: let's fast forward. >> oh, well.>> tim gunn: there we are. >> there she is. but you can see a littlemore. this one has lucinda's first cousin, lucy's son. and then one of my first cousin'schildren who came to be with us. but we really didn't spend every christmas at the whitehouse. the only christmas we really spent there was our last christmas.every year we would have two particular special

parties. one of them was for the embassy children.they would come in costume -- i shouldn't say costume. come in what they wore in theircountry. for us it looked like costumes. and then we would have a party for -- i don'tknow if they were orphan children but there were particular homes. and the children wouldcome. we would set up little bitty tables and they would all have a christmas soda orwhatever. so that was very special. and that's what the second picture is there.i'm actually in the picture with daddy but you can't see me because -- only half of me.i'm wearing that pink outfit. but you can see the children loving the tree. that wasvery special. >> tim gunn: and you had cookies within reach.>> oh, yes. these were all ornaments -- well,

these are the ornaments, some of the ornamentsover here. i don't know if any of you can see them.>> tim gunn: you can come up afterwards and take a closer look.>> they were very simple. they were ones that we could have on our tree. and that was ourtheme, everybody's christmas. i'm going to read you a little piece. december22, 1968, my father wrote this note to my mother. "to claudia alta taylor johnson,"her whole name. "my dearest, upon your return to the white house arrangements will be madeto pay for the christmas tree decorations so you will own them and enjoy them againin the years ahead." and then he goes on, "here is another birthday present i've beentold you would enjoy. all my love."

and daddy, his next-to-last year -- can wego back to the wedding? this is the most important part.>> tim gunn: forward. >> forward. ok. we'll get to it.>> tim gunn: there we go. >> we were married, stand up.[laughter] chuck and i were married 47 and two days ago.[applause] >> tim gunn: bravo.>> we had the most beautiful decorations. and, again, this is the way to save money.you just recycle them. you do them for the wedding and then you just keep on doing it.so that year -- talk about trouble. can you imagine this? we had wonderful, gorgeous treesmade out of poinsettias. they were all around.

and then we got married on the 9th. and immediatelythe next day they -- now we can start on christmas, on the 10th of december.the beautiful creche that you will see, which was given by the engelhard's, was right wherewe got married in the east room. so it didn't get to go up until we got out. but you willsee a picture of that. here's part of it, neapolitan creche. it was a gift to the whitehouse. every year they put it up. i've been back -- for many of the first years,i would go back and take a picture of it with my children or whoever was available and sendthe picture to mrs. engelhard just to let them know that it was really still there andloved and everything. it was a special, special time.but we got married. and then they had to start

doing the decorations. and, of course, youcan imagine we received our guests in the blue room so you couldn't have that big treein the blue room. so they had to do all of that starting on the 10th of december. i don'tknow how they did it. and then we went off on our honeymoon andmy father went around the world. he was the first president to go around the world. hetook off and went to the funeral of the prime minister of australia, went around to vietnamto see our troops, flew in to the vatican city to see the pope. he did the full worldand then came back on christmas eve. that was really wonderful. and we came back fromthe honeymoon so we could all be together for that christmas. that's when you see thesepictures of lucinda and me. it was wonderful.

and then all of us sitting upstairs in thefamily quarters. here we go. >> was that your family christmas picturethat you guys would take every year? >> well, we always did have to do a familyhorror show picture. trying to gather - i don't know about y'all, but it is one of theleast fun things that we do every year to try to get everybody together, everybody smiling;the two lyndons both being, you know, smiling. we have a 2-month-old baby, a dog that isvery active. so trying to get everybody. but that is upstairs in the family quarters. andthat's the tree there which was wonderful. and lucinda insisted that i bring this. doyou know this? lynda bird on it. everybody? a very special bag. now, this is where i wishwe had a picture. i don't think you have a

picture of the upstairs other than this one.but we hung up stockings. and this year we had special stockings made for us.>> tim gunn: good heavens. that is elaborate. >> mine. and this is university of texas wherei went to school. mystic, my camp. "mccall's" magazine. there i am on the front. i workedfor mccall. there's the ranch, all in beautiful -- just spectacular. christmas tree, texashistory, the white house, my sorority. and a little book which i should have writtensomething wonderful in but i don't think i did.>> tim gunn: there's still time. >> oh yes. but we have hung this up for 46years i guess. might have been 47. i guess it was because we have one for you, too, chuck.don't we?

[laughter]it could have been 68. it shows you when you get to my age, what is a year or two. anyway.oh, it had to be 68 because we have one for lucinda.>> tim gunn: where is yours? >> i told her to bring mine.[laughter] >> so we have them hanging up. and then afterthey hung at the l.b.j. ranch after we left washington. and they hung up and everythingwas just gorgeous, beautiful, wonderful. and we added grandchildren. so that meant themother had to go make us new stockings. and none are going to be as elegant as this becausethe lady had unfortunately died, was not available to make new stockings.>> tim gunn: actually, this -- [inaudible]

>> i wouldn't want to tell you everything.on chuck's, he has a marine, beautiful, wonderful, all in jewels. every one is different. daddy'swas fantastic. mother's was great. and then when mother died, we couldn't goback to the ranch and hang our stockings up anymore. each family decided to take theirstockings back. so i hung these up a week ago or so and just took it off the mantelpieceto bring it here tonight because lucinda told me to.>> thank you, lucinda. >> tim gunn: thank you.[applause] talk about something special. genevieve, doesthe crafts person in you approve? >> i'm just taken away with this. this isso beautiful. it's not too much. this could

be sold at anthropology in two seconds.>> actually -- this was the fanciest thing we did. our tree is homespun. the only thingis we did put - every year we would put fresh cookies on it. and the little children wouldcome and we would know that it was appreciated because we would see little bite holes outof every cookie. [laughter]we had to make sure that we put the cookies, the real cookie, down towards the bottom.we didn't want any child to break their tooth on them. even with these we had the problemof if we put candy in them, you have to really hope that the chocolate is not still therenext year. >> tim gunn: actually to underscore what youwere saying about recycling, we may think

at first glance that this is the same tree.they are two different trees, different years. >> and even today i think especially withthe obama administration everything is repurposed and reused. you'll see some sparkle on anornament that was a different color last year, which is nice because there are so many ornaments.it's nice they keep reusing them. >> tim gunn: when i talk about my experience,it was a different time. oh lynda, what is that under the tree?>> yes. [laughter]>> tim gunn: any speculation around here? >> it looks like one of those afghan dogs.[laughter] >> they were white painted twigs.>> tim gunn: oh.

>> it was meant to replicate snow under thetree. >> tim gunn: i see.>> if i could just one quick thing. >> tim gunn: oh, yes. we want you to.>> when it was the center in mrs. robb's, i think it was the 30th or 31st wedding anniversary,i received a call from mrs. robb. she said: do you think it would be possible for chuckand i to come down to the white house? i know it's awfully busy at christmas time but itis our anniversary. as it turned out, on that specific date the events for that eveningwere over at 7:00. and i knew that everybody would be gone about 8:00 or 8:30. so i madearrangements for the senator and mrs. robb to come to the white house unbeknownst toanybody other than the secret service. the

butlers and i placed a bottle of champagnein the east room for them so that they do have a little bit of private time in the roomwhere they were married. i think it was a very moving occasion. andit also points out what the white house really is. it's a home. people flow through, butthey always have a tie to the white house. we try and represent that. it's somethingwe feel very strongly about. the white house is the president's home.>> tim gunn: that's lovely. thank you. >> it was a wonderful thing. it made us feelso good. we're still together, 47 years. [laughter]>> which is astonishing. [applause]>> white house weddings do not have many long

weddings. we feel very blessed.>> tim gunn: here we have christmas with the nixons.>> i wanted to point out this ornament that mrs. nixon is holding. these are referredto as the state flower balls. you can see more of them on this other picture. thesewere ornaments, one was made for each state. they were made by handicapped individuals.they were kind of a combination of felt and some artificial flowers. and these ornamentswere actually left behind. mrs. nixon left her ornaments behind whereas most first ladiesmake arrangements, like your mom and dad did, take them for their presidential libraries.so i had heard that these were around. i wanted to see them when i was researching my book.and no one could tell me exactly where they

were. we were working in the warehouse. asyou mentioned, there's a lot of boxes. we came across the box that was unceremoniouslymarked "pat's balls." [laughter]that's the raunchy part of the segment. and there they were inside. they've actually beenused. they've been used by mrs. reagan, mrs. obama. they've been brought out. they havemoved into the category of a national treasure now because of their age and what they represent.that's my story. >> tim gunn: that's quite a story.and this is more from the nixon's. >> yes. she loved this gold garland.>> tim gunn: where is that tree? >> that was in the grand foyer that year.right? is there had been years where it's

been in the grand foyer.>> tim gunn: i see. so it's not always in the blue room.>> recently i think. for the last many years it's been in the blue room. but there wasa point -- >> i think the last time the principle treewas in the kennedy administration. every year since then it's -- the principle tree withthe theme on it has been in the blue room. although there are many years where thereare trees all over. >> yeah. every year i've been there, thereare so many. >> tim gunn: there was a new tradition establishedunder the nixons, the gingerbread house. here are two of them.>> we've come a long way.

>> tim gunn: they're startlingly different.>> i can give you a little bit of background. >> tim gunn: we'd love to hear it.>> the traditional gingerbread house is german. and that was because hans raffert, an americancitizen, born in germany, received his training there, came to the white house in the johnsonadministration and when mrs. nixon came in, he went to her one day and said the whitehouse ought to have a tradition from around the world and i'd like to create a gingerbreadhouse. >> tim gunn: he was the chef.>> chef to the white house. not the pastry chef but a chef in the white house. but that'sa traditional german gingerbread house. and through the years it has morphed.>> tim gunn: considerably.

>> considerably. and a pastry chef, he said,the pastry chef will create the gingerbread house.>> tim gunn: so this is 2009. >> yeah. it has electricity now and water.and mechanized ice skaters this year. >> tim gunn: it's incredible. remarkable.>> they work -- they work from architectural plans to get everything correct, the measurements,proportions and everything. >> tim gunn: i can see why.>> each year the chefs try and update it. there's about 400 pounds of gingerbread andicing in those. that's on a base there that's on a table in the state dining room. carryit in, it takes eight people. and it has to be taken from the pastry shop, which is atemporary facility that's created in the ground

floor of the executive residence, actuallywhere the china is kept. and they put it together down there because they need a big area. andthen it's very ceremoniously taken out the south doors, where the president goes in andout to the helicopters, loaded onto a truck driven at 2 miles an hour to the north porticowhere it's ceremoniously carried in and placed on the state dining room table. the end table,i should say. it stays there throughout entire the christmas season. and at the end of thechristmas season it's taken out and thrown in the dumpster. unfortunately it's been therefor 30 days. do you want to eat gingerbread that's been there for 30 days?>> you don't want to eat it anyway. but has it ever broken in the transfer? this is oneof my favorite parts of the show every year.

>> i'm not aware of it.>> i did see one year, i believe it was two years ago. we brought it up -- "we." i watched.>> you did the whole thing. there was someone who licked the house.>> tim gunn: really? >> was it you?>> it was not me. but it was a wonderful moment. >> tim gunn: if it were to break, it wouldbe a "make it work" moment. >> yes.>> tim gunn: so now we are with the fords at the white house for christmas. coleen?>> well, mrs. ford loved this calico fabric. that year was going to be a frugal christmas.she was going to be very conscientious about the spending. it turned out that that fabricwas quite costly and she ended up spending

not just on the fabric but the whole thingwas $1,600. >> tim gunn: for the whole tree?>> for all the decorations that year. >> tim gunn: all right.>> and the press were merciless with her. because that was more than the previous threeadministrations had spent. so it kind of backfired on her. can you imagine? it seems like nothingtoday. >> tim gunn: that's remarkably little.>> how many trees do they decorate? just that one?>> they had this one but i believe they just had some smaller trees, smaller table-toptrees. they used some greens in the hallways but nothing like we see today.and mrs. ford also liked to wrap her packages

with fabric. that was something unusual thatshe did. >> tim gunn: and this was more of the fordwhite house. >> yup. we see more calico. there's that fabric.she really loved it. >> tim gunn: i understood that she broughtin a rather masterful quilter. >> yes.>> tim gunn: to work on these decorations. >> yes. this was the style. one of the reasonsthat i had loved researching this topic was just this glimpse back in time of how thingshave changed, just how charming that was and understated. and maybe something we wouldnot repeat. i'm not certain. >> tim gunn: it's a matter of taste.>> once again, looking back at the historical

context, at the time president ford took officethere was what they referred to as runaway inflation, which was about 6%. and presidentford and his staff came up with the idea of the win, with inflation now, program. andthey were trying to be as frugal as possible. so a lot of the ornaments were natural material.>> tim gunn: this looks quite grand. this is the state floor cross hall.>> that was the following year. >> tim gunn: yes. 1974.>> and that's boxwoods cut up, the branches cut up. and the angels, with the trumpets.i think there were 12 of them entirely on the state floor.>> tim gunn: they're beautiful. >> there was a bit of a problem with the angels.they were supposed to be -- there were supposed

to be more. and in transit to the white housethey were broken. so they scaled them back. >> tim gunn: well, now i bring you to me.this is 1979. i was teaching at the corcoran school of art, now part of george washingtonuniversity. and we were called two weeks in advance. so we were given a lot of notice.and told that we were decorating, making ornaments for and decorating the white house christmastree in the blue room. we were all hugely excited. in fact, the woman standing nextto mrs. carter was my boss. she was chair of the fine arts department. she was makingcertain everything was all right. mrs. carter established the theme. i learnedtonight that she established the theme. for some reason i thought we established it.[laughter]

it was american folk art. so we decided uponroughly 12 templates. we needed to create a lot of ornaments. and we did a lot of researchinto american folk art and we had a santa's workshop going. we were cutting wood, painting.>> every ornament you guys made? >> every one we made by hand. this was nosleep for two weeks. and we did the installation. to give you the idea of the sense of scale,that's how big the ornaments are. actually, i made that noah's ark.[laughter] i didn't know there was a picture of it untiltonight. and i made that white house. two ornaments. it's roughly the same size as thenoah's ark. so you can see how small these look on the tree. they're big. as we know,it's a huge tree.

but i have to tell you what happens. we arrived-- we had five days, which i now know is a luxury. we're up on the teetering scaffolding.and because we made these ornaments to look antique, they were all subdued hues, distressed.once they got on the tree, they disappeared. it was like a weird camouflage. it was horrifying.and we found out about it, of course, the very first day of the installation.i had been at sears, which i don't know whether it's still on wisconsin avenue anymore, butit was then. i had been there buying sandpaper, dozens of tools for the students. we had alot of work to do. and once we were at the white house doing this installation, i rememberedpassing a display of red lacquered styrofoam apples. you can see one on the tree. it'stwo inches in diameter. i thought, our savior.

i'm going to buy as many of these apples asi possibly can. so i ran up there. they were in boxes of adozen. i said, "i need 100." and the salesperson said, "you need 100 of these apples?" i said,"no, i need 100 boxes of a dozen." so i returned with 1,200 of these apples and the tree cameto life. it really did. thankfully. the students who were majoring in ceramicmade the packages, the presents that you see. everything's clay. everything's fired clay.it was ambitious. but we didn't care about those clay packages. we cared about what washappening on the tree. >> and was the need for secrecy as much thenas today? were you telling people what you were doing?>> tim gunn: you know, i remember boasting

about it. maybe i was a security breach. butwe were all so thrilled and ecstatic. we were at the white house. we were eating in thecommissary, in in the basement every day for lunch. it was thrilling.>> i know here they're described as colonial. >> tim gunn: oh. really?[laughter] >> "decorations made in a colonial style bycontemporary artists." >> tim gunn: well, they were contemporaryartisans. >> "by the corcoran school of arts and designto make over 500 ornaments in mixed media. one of those students was our own panel moderator.">> tim gunn: i had graduated by then. i was then teaching. but i will tell you, initiallyit was 10 people. once we saw how daunting

the size of the tree was, i went running backto the school and said, "anyone standing, we need your help." but it was a huge amountof fun. >> i'll confirm with my notes i have herethat i ahead -- i made -- it was the american folk art on a douglas fur tree that came fromwest virginia. >> tim gunn: one other brief anecdote. wewere all so thrilled to have our photographs taken with mrs. carter. and something happenedthat would never happen today. when we followed up to ask where are the photographs, it wasafter about a month, we were told there was no film in the camera.>> really? >> tim gunn: and that story has been corroboratedby the national archives. there was no film

in the camera.actually, coleen and gary, i want to ask you this, too. when we took the tree down, tookthe ornaments down, we took them all back. so was that unusual?>> no. at that time it wasn't. >> tim gunn: ok.>> because they were a donation from the corcoran school.>> tim gunn: yes. >> they went back to the corcoran school withthe understanding that they wouldn't be sold. >> tim gunn: they were not sold.>> i know. [laughter]that was how they got back. at least as far as we can tell that didn't happen.>> tim gunn: no.

>> and i know this year there are some ornamentsthat we made arrangements to take back, too. one of the ornaments in the east room thisyear, we took books that were going to be thrown away and we have them open on a treewith paper popup art coming out of it. we just knew they would be crushed in transit.so -- going back to the warehouse. so we made arrangements that we're going to take thoseand return them to the artist. >> tim gunn: so case by case.>> in more recent years all the ornaments have become property of white house becausethe government paid for them. >> tim gunn: i see.>> they become property of the white house and remain such until the national archives,the wonderful people here at the national

archives, take possession of them.we've had some discussions over the years. some of the natural things that have beenon the trees, after they've been in boxes for a couple of years until the end of anadministration, like cookies and things, the national archives isn't too interested ingetting those kinds of things in with the rest of the archival material. so there havebeen some good discussions over the years. but all of the ornaments now go to the nationalarchives. >> tim gunn: wait a minute. is this a surprise?>> mrs. carter was very disappointed she wasn't able to join us tonight. she has fond memoriesof her time with you. >> tim gunn: i'm going to burst into tears.[laughter]

[applause]>> tim gunn: you're kidding? thank you. >> you're welcome.>> tim gunn: i'm farklempt. this is the loveliest thing ever.>> thank you for solving the problem. we had been tearing the place apart looking for theornaments. [laughter]>> tim gunn: that is so lovely. i don't know what to do with it now. i'm putting it nextto lynda's stocking. what an incredible surprise. how did you sneak that in? i went throughthe slides earlier. >> two sets of slides.>> tim gunn: you are sneaky. i'm deeply, deeply touched. i'm thrilled and honored. thank you.all right. we are moving ahead. oops. we're

going backwards. see? farklempt.i have a question. who was holding mrs. reagan's legs in this photograph?>> gary! [applause]>> at least i was holding the ladder. >> tim gunn: coleen, the reagan years.>> well, i described them as a little bit of hollywood glitz because nancy had a lot-- mrs. reagan, had a lot of gold, gold snowflakes. one of the things she did -- do you remember"just say no," the campaign against drugs? >> tim gunn: yeah.>> she put her money where her mouth was. the decorators for several years during thereagan administration were recovering young drug addicts who came and decorated the whitehouse. and many of them -- i've gone back

and researched. there are many letters ofthese young people saying how much that meant to them that the first lady would bring theminto the most important house in our land and really entrust them with such a job. ifound that to be a very touching story. >> tim gunn: i agree. i've never heard itbefore. >> i don't know if you can see it so well,but nancy had these shoes she loved to wear with little red pompoms. they were in a lotof her christmas pictures. i guess they were her christmas shoes. not these.[laughter] and then mrs. reagan was also known for bringinga little bit of celebrity to the white house. there were secret santas. some of them werewell-known from hollywood. we might see one.

that's her husband. that was supposedly asurprise. >> tim gunn: there's one.>> there's one. [laughter]>> this should have been leaked years ago. >> tim gunn: that's a classic photographer.>> this was actually done at the press preview. mr. t. of the multi-gold necklaces, came downthe grand staircase. she had this set up in front of the press. so it did see the lightof day early on. >> i love that he's giving out his dolls tothe children. [laughter]>> tim gunn: if this were today, i would say this didn't happen; it was photo shopped.>> oh, it happened.

>> tim gunn: it really happened. remarkable.i would have failed this multiple choice test. and now we are to -->> if i can back up a second. >> tim gunn: yes, of course.>> the idea of those trees. you go to the trees there. the idea of those trees startedin the third year of the reagan administration. the trees with the snow.>> tim gunn: on the right. >> the designer, mrs. reagan's designer, fromcalifornia, the second year of the administration we flocked the trees with baby's breath putin amongst the branches of the trees. mrs. reagan said let's do lots of trees. we had27 trees. >> tim gunn: 27?>> yeah. one on each corner of the east room,

one on either side of the creche, cross hall,grand foyer. and then nancy clark, the chief floral designer, went to new york on a shoppingspree to try and get some decorations and red apples i think was on her list.[laughter] and she ran across the place called the studio56 in new york. and they had a product that was called real fake snow. and what it waswas white terrafin run through a machine. it was filmy and thin. we got this productand tried it on a small table-top tree. i think we did it in the summer. it was crazy.but we did it in the summer. and ted graber, we were putting little handfuls on the tree.he said, "no, that's not the way snow falls." he walked over and grabbed a box of snow andturned it upside down on the tree. and that's

the way -- it looked like it was natural.sowhat we did was we put the scaffoldings up, we'd go to the top of the tree and take boxesof this real fake snow and just literally throw it up in the air and let it fall downon the tree. and it gave this wonderful look, as you can see.>> tim gunn: it does. >> but in the grand foyer when the touristscame up from the ground floor, up the stairs, they made a left-hand turn and went into thegrand foyer, these trees, multiple stacks of trees, and you could visibly see them shiveras they walked in because it seemed like it was so cold. they looked real.at the parties, the kids used to love to run and slide up under the trees like they werein the snow drifts.

>> tim gunn: did this become a tradition?>> well, different first ladies used it. the next slide, with the bushes.>> tim gunn: yes. >> mrs. bush said, i've gone through six yearsof snow at the white house and i don't want it to stop. she said it's a wonderful traditionthat nancy started. and that's why the snow. and you can see here in the foyer on the right-handside as you're looking at it, how it looks like it's been in a snowstorm.>> tim gunn: it's very beautiful. so here we are with the bushes. what are we lookingat on the right? >> mrs. bush favored literacy. so they actuallyhung books on the trees. they were some of the ornaments. they were part of the table-topdecor as well. you're always looking for big

things. you were looking for apples, but otherpeople are looking for big stuff to put on the tree to take up space. and books servedthat purpose. these i think were all literary characters one year.>> this was another year. i don't know how many of you are familiar with annabelle dolls?they're collectibles out of pennsylvania. we went, once again, nancy clark went up andmet with the people at the company. we bought the basic structures of these ornaments andanimals. and then they brought them back and hand-painted them in the florist shop andput -- created the animal's cape, clothing for the dolls. that went on the trees andalso on the mantels throughout the house. >> tim gunn: they're much merrier and morecheerful than those nutcrackers.

>> they became better artists.>> tim gunn: we have more needlepoint. >> this one blows me away. i think this isthe year of the needlepoint where all the blue room ornaments were done by needlepoint.>> tim gunn: this sounds like some sort of torture treatment.>> also they did a whole needlepoint village, like a train village under one of the trees.i interviewed one of the people who worked on these. she said, "we were panic-strickenthat we weren't going to get these finished because they were so time intensive and neededso many of them." >> tim gunn: can i ask a question about theneedlepoint? why? [laughter]>> barbra bush loves to needlepoint.

>> tim gunn: well, let her.[laughter] >> she wanted to share. i'll let you takethat up with her. >> you will get a very ardent person. shedid her needlepoint when she picked it up, was when the president was the ambassadorto china. she needed an activity flying back and forth.>> tim gunn: she took up a good one. >> actually when she started doing needlepoint,her church got together and did a needlepoint creche. they presented to she and the presidentwhen they were at the vice president's residence so they would have a creche in their homeat the vice president's residence. when she came to the white house, she brought thatand decided why not do a needlepoint, the

guild all over the country. that was a continuationof an effort that's going on today. that's an outreach across the country to use differentgroups. i've gotten in more trouble than i can tellyou. when a new first lady comes into the white house and after trying to go throughthe campaign, go through the thank yous, parties after inaugural, then the chief usher comesup to the first lady two weeks later and says we need to start thinking about christmas.and all the first ladies have said: i haven't even picked a staff yet and you're askingme to think about christmas? she picked that up very quickly.>> tim gunn: how many of these needlepoint ornaments were there?>> hundreds i think.

>> over 600. and some of them were like thehouse here, were done -- >> three dimensional.>> done not on canvas but on the plastic mesh. that's how they got the houses to stand together.my daughter ended up doing millie's dog house. tended up as part of the decorations. theywere on the mantelpieces once again. storybook characters. it was an amazing christmas.you don't like the needlepoint, tim? >> tim gunn: it pains me because i know howlabor intensive it is. it makes the folk art tree seem like a walk in the park.>> i told you you had a lot of time. >> tim gunn: yeah.>> i believe that that millie ornament, the first lady made herself of the dog. she participated.she made ornaments as well that year.

>> tim gunn: as well she should.[laughter] and now we have mrs. clinton. this is herfirst tree? 1995. the theme is "twas the night before christmas.">> which was fun because they did a couple of things that were interesting. they reachedout to architecture schools to create different ornaments for the house in the night beforechristmas and i believe they reached out to culinary schools to represent the night beforechristmas. and that was i believe a sugar mantel if i'm right, gary, in the green roomthere. >> yes. it created a great bit of consternation.>> tim gunn: why is that? >> well, it was a pastry. and it was sittingon a mantel against french silk. and there's

also a fireplace under it which was lit everyevening. i believe her name was collette. >> it was.>> we had long discussions. you can't see it there in the photograph, but we ended upwith the piece of plexiglas behind the pastry to shield the cloth and the front where thegreenery hides an insulation shield which kept the heat from melting the pastry work.>> tim gunn: it's a "make it work" moment. and you did.>> that ended up being my job. i ended up being more of a person that says, "you wantto do what?" let's talk about this for a minute, with the garlands hung on the top, throughoutthe house. >> tim gunn: it's beautiful.>> there was a lot of negotiation on how decorations

would go up.>> so they had snowmen one year. this i always liked. this was all pastry, right, gary?>> yes. >> this christmas tree here. this is all sugarwork. and another sugar fireplace. just really amazing, intricate work.>> beautiful. >> that was in the grand foyer. on that table,the marble, white martial top table, was part of the purchase after the white house wasburnt in the war of 1812. it was purchased by president monroe for the blue room. itnow resides in the grand foyer of the white house, just inside the north portico door.it becomes a prop for the decoration. once again a lot of talk about how to preserve.make sure we didn't do anything either to

the mirror, the gold gild or anything. buti think it works out well. >> that was one of my favorite pieces in thehouse. i didn't know that. >> tim gunn: what is this? the world's mostelaborate chandelier? good heavens. >> what happened was -- we had a course ofwork to repair the three chandeliers in the east room. we worked it out in such a waythat one at the north end had been done, one at the south end had been done, the one inthe middle was left open >> this wreath was done to take the placeof the chandelier. it was a monstrous undertaking with a number of national park service, engineers,and architects. there's an architect on my staff making sure it wasn't too heavy forthe support. that support actually goes up

in the floor of the queen's bedroom above.there's an access hatch that allows you to get to that support.>> tim gunn: i still don't know that i'd have the courage to stand under it.>> you could have danced under it. it happened many a night.>> tim gunn: i don't know, gary. it is beautiful. >> it says here that it's -- i see, "complementingthe gold of the east room creche with a 600-point gold and silver advent wreath." goodness gracious.>> tim gunn: it's scary. >> yes.>> tim gunn: what are we looking at on the right?>> i think the first lady was honoring historic places and homes.>> tim gunn: yes.

>> i think a lot of buildings here. the otherthing i was going to point out, the clintons used the same tree skirt every year in theblue room. there's a patch from each state on the left that was quilted on. so that wasone of the things that remained constant through the clinton administration. but these aremore i think of the historic homes that we were honoring across america.>> a little bit of a funny story. >> tim gunn: sure.>> over the summer we were looking at photos. we were thinking about the decorations forthis year. i said i've seen this photo from the clinton administration. there's a beautifulwreath. we started looking into if it was available to use again. and i had the pictureson our kitchen table. and my son said, "oh,

you're putting up an o for obama?" [laughter]and i quick called and said we might want to rethink the o.but the other thing was we found out that it had been repurposed as a halloween wreathas some point. so it no longer existed for us anyway. i just thought, you know, throughthe eyes of kids, that was pretty funny. >> tim gunn: and the next bush white house.yes, we get it. [laughter]>> i think this year was "home for the holidays" might have been the theme. they recreatedall of the presidential homes in miniature dollhouse forms. i've seen these in the warehouse.they still exist. they're really quite lovely. >> tim gunn: they're wonderful.>> they invited me to come and see the one

-- the texas white house. they had the beagledogs. >> it was accurate?>> oh, the beagle dogs are not there. we never decorated like that.>> designer's license. >> of course, we never had that kind of tree.>> once again, the chief floral designer went to the national park service and went to allthe sites and got the architecturally drawings. and the white house carpenter shop createdeach and every one of these homes to scale. >> tim gunn: beautiful.>> and, again, literary characters we're going to see popping up. "alice in wonderland.">> tim gunn: great. >> so this year -- well, that was -- theirlast christmas was a patriotic christmas.

this was the year that nancy clark was niceenough to bring me in. the funny thing is we were creating this snow again. so we weregiven this instruction to make it look like a beautiful snowy scene. so we worked veryhard. first lady, mrs. bush would often walk through. and we got notes. and the notes were,"oh, dear, there's too much snow." we thought, ok, we can regroup. we would start takingthe snow away. they'd say, "oh, dear, now there's too little snow." so we'd go throughthis process a couple of times. we'd say can we have a little more feedback. and nancyclark says envision that there's been a fresh snowfall and then it's three days later andthe snow has melted and reset. i said, "all right. i'm from jersey. you do not want snowthe third day after it's on the ground."

>> tim gunn: no. you want a fresh snowfall.>> that was the only time i spoke up. the rest of the time i behaved. the point wasthe first lady had a vision. and she knew what it was. and we were really there justto make it happen, to make it work for her. and when we finally got the finished product,it really was beautiful. and it was worth all the give and take.>> is cleanup just the worst with that stuff? >> that was just the cotton that you wouldlike -- i don't know where they bought it. >> the real fake stuff?>> we just took the trees down, let it fall on the floor wherever it was and i went outand had carpenters buy plastic snow shovels. that's how we got it off marble floors.>> tim gunn: and now to the present day. the

obama white house.>> one of the things that mrs. obama always does is the first holiday activity of theseason is with children of military personnel serving in active service. in that way shehonors them. i think this year they were making some type of -- i'm sure low-cal, low-sugartreats. >> tim gunn: and tasty, also.>> yes. >> that's the state dining room.that hawaii ball that you saw, they were supposedly underneath as a very unattractive gold plasticball that was recycled. they decorated over them. and i think -- was this america thebeautiful or america the brave? the blue room tree -- i think that might be this year. thisis i think this year's blue room tree.

>> tim gunn: it is.>> the blue room tree under mrs. obama has always had some type of military significancehonoring our men and women who are serving or who have served.>> tim gunn: it pays tribute to our armed forces through the eyes of children.>> all in this tree are very humble, too. burlap ribbons, piece of log. all of thesemediums that are super available and approachable to everyone everywhere else. these are gorgeous.that's this year. >> this is the room which the volunteers nicknamedthe vermouth room. >> what's happening?>> you just go crazy. really beautiful dress form. so the first lady had this idea whichi thought was just so neat given her take

on fashion. we were so lucky that two volunteersshowed up in our mix. one was a teacher at parsons. the other was a dress maker. theywere really able to take the lead on this for us.>> tim gunn: they're beautiful. >> the one on the left has a fabric undergarment,like a hoop skirt. it kept getting weighted down by all of the bows. you need a lot ofevergreen to cover those skirts. >> tim gunn: absolutely. wire instead of cloth.>> yes. the other was out of wire. it worked a lot quicker.>> i think the ornament on the left, we had the white house held an ornament contest thisyear to make a 3d ornament. i believe this was the winner or one of the winners on theleft.

>> a lot of blues this year throughout thewhite house, which i thought was a very non-traditional christmas color that just looked gorgeouswith the traditional reds and greens. it's kind of that antique gray blue.>> tim gunn:it is beautiful. >> and i can tell a secret. if you go backto the picture -- you tell it. >> no, you go ahead.>> so jim marvin, who we mentioned earlier, who has come back for many, many years anddid the state room this year, you may see that the volunteers hung a j and an m on thetree in honor of him. yup, the j and the m for jim marvin.>> tim gunn: very nice. >> did you think i was going to tell a differentsecret?

>> yeah.>> yeah, i'm not telling that. that one i'm not telling.>> there's a number of things that go on, like i said, of putting decorations up andhow they go up. like the garland over top of the fireplace in the state dining room.it has to be supported. and the mantels in there dates back from the early years of thewhite house. there's not a whole lot of support. so it has to be very closely engineered. andthis year there was a small failure. the garland came crashing down. luckily no damage occurredto the portrait of president lincoln. it's one of those things that happens just likein your home. if you have a cat and it runs up the tree and the dog chases it, over goesthe tree.

>> tim gunn: and the delivery of the tree.this looks like quite a production. >> once again, this is process of deliveringthe tree to the white house started in the johnson administration with the national christmastree association. this is the way the tree is delivered. it actually comes from differentparts of the country. i had an opportunity to go to washington and oregon and wisconsinand north carolina, and just about every state in the union where the christmas trees camefrom. they get transported sometimes by national guard, sometimes they come by private truck.it's all done by donation from the christmas tree growers association. when it gets tothe pennsylvania avenue gate, it's offloaded from the trucks and placed on this wagon andthen the horse-drawn carriage brings it up

to the north portico. i think this year mrs.obama commented about how big the tree was and it was going to be difficult to get in.you know the story about that. >> no, i'm going to let you tell it.>> i think they had to take the doors off their hinges.>> they did. >> tree trouble. there was some tree trouble.>> it's not first time that's happened. back about 25 years ago we got a tree that we literallycould not get in the doors. we ended up taking the doors on the south down and used a craneto crane it through the south portico, over the railing and in through the south side.it was seven inches wider at the door at the south side than the north.>> and that's on your shoulders, right? if

the tree doesn't fit, you take the blame?>> yeah. [laughter]>> tim gunn: the limbs are malleable, are they not?>> it depends on the temperature. >> tim gunn: ok.>> when they wrap the tree. once they're wrapped -- you can see the heavy ropes on the treeto pull it tight. if it's too -- >> tim gunn: it's brought in wrapped.>> yeah. if it's too cold when they transport it, if they pull it too tightly, all the limbssnap. i can't say that that hasn't occurred in past years. we had to go out and get anothertree at the last second. >> tim gunn: what's the story of the cranberrytree?

>> i think mrs. ford started the cranberrytree. it's a colonial decoration, topiary. and for many, many years it was done justlike this. two little old ladies would painstakingly dip their pen in elmer's glue and then putit on to the styrofoam form. i believe the story is they always made two.one would stay in refrigeration and one would be out. half way through the season they wouldswap them. then mrs. obama has reinterpreted this. her first year in office there was acranberry mantel instead of the tree. >> tim gunn: we have the picture.>> this is the reinterpretation. they've done a couple of different things. so the cranberrytree has transformed. and you can hot glue them.>> peppercorns one year, too. really beautiful.

>> for years nancy clark and i had a runningargument about that cranberry tree. she wanted to do away with it because it took two volunteersover two days 10 hours a day. each one was done individually. about a third of the cranberriesthat they used didn't hold up when they were trying to put them in. i said it was a traditionthat i personally liked and therefore we would continue it. it wasn't until after i leftthat nancy found another way. >> and the white house historical associationornaments. how long has this been a tradition? >> 33rd year.>> tim gunn: the 33rd year. they're incredibly beautiful. it's a remarkable legacy to have.>> it also helps the white house historical association support the educational programabout the white house and the families that

live there. it is the main source of fundsfor that purpose. and through the years it has grown. for a while there it was exponentialgrowth. now it's pretty much topped out. although it is continuing to grow. and the ornaments-- the people that get the first set -- i had neighbors across the street. i gave themthe first set, the first four years. they said if you decide to move away and don'tgive us the ornament, we'll never talk to you again. so once you get the set started,i think 81 was the first year, then if people want to keep the set going forever.>> tim gunn: and it's holiday time. so we have hanukkah in the white house as well.coleen? >> we've also had the obamas recognize kwanzaa.i believe president nixon may have been the

first to have a menorah in the white house.president bush was the first to have it i guess in the west wing. there's been representationof other religions through the year. i think a conscious effort in the last couple of yearshas been made to include others. >> tim gunn: very good. and we have whitehouse pets. >> whenever your approval rating goes down,the white house pet is a good thing to have. >> tim gunn: it is a good thing to have. sowe had the nixon family pets on the left. and the bush's dog, millie, on the right.and we had the cat. and buddy. >> i think under the bush -- under georgew. they started the barney cam. is that right? the internet videos that were all the rageof the first pets going around. they wore

little cameras. you could see the decorationsfrom their point of view. >> tim gunn: i loved that.>> you can still go back and look at it. it's the barney cam.>> tim gunn: yes. yes. exactly. >> and sunny and bo are really big and popular.literally they're really big. like this year i think a mile ribbon was used on each ofthe animals. the children love them. >> tim gunn: and that was caroline kennedy'spony, macaroni. >> there they are.>> tim gunn: and behind bo is a four-foot statue made out of 40,000 pipe cleaners.>> yes. >> tim gunn: maybe they should have made boout of cranberries.

[laughter]>> i think this year they are both mechanized, bo and sonny.>> tim gunn: is that right? >> they call them bobots.>> tim gunn: this is our last slide. >> this is represents what the white houseis all about at christmas. these military people represent obviously our military. theywere just at the end of the evening, a long evening, standing in front of the fireplace,enjoying the decoration and the camaraderie that goes along with being at the white house.but all the visitors that come to the white house at some point have a moment like thiswhere they can enjoy the decorations, and enjoy what is the white house home.>> tim gunn: beautiful. we want to thank all

>> tim gunn: to account for.>> the national archives would like us to have some record of what we have.>> where they are. >> tim gunn: yes?>> hi. thank you so much. this is a great program. do you guys know what happened tothe corcoran ornaments now that it is closing and going into g.w.?>> tim gunn: i know. they all came back with us. the individuals who made them took themback. i took great pride in giving away white house christmas tree candy-colored styrofoamornaments for years, for years. because we paid for everything.>> so they're floating around ebay somewhere right now.>> tim gunn: they may very well be. i honestly

don't know what happened to my two ornaments.i don't know. thank you, mrs. carter. >> i think if they're on ebay, the price justwent up. gary, a question for you. my mom was a volunteerat the white house under george w. bush. she just always enjoyed when you came and spoketo the volunteers and appreciated all the hard work that they did. but rumor had ityou were going to write a book. where is that book you were going to write?>> it's a good rumor. i've just personally decided that for the time being, you know,we're a little further away from when i retired, but i had the opportunity and the pleasureto serve some great families. they were always very nice to me and very kind. a lot of whati know and the questions that come out are

table decoration ideas 50th birthday party

danielle: hi, i'm danielle venokur from dvgreenand today we are going to be talking about how to design a rustic diner party with lotsof influences from nature, from the past and from stuff pulled from throughout your house.ok, so for the rustic dinner party, we really took this word "rustic" pretty seriously.it's great to come up with a theme i find because it just helps you just get inspirationfor designing your table. so what we did here was i went upstate andi, in the forest, found a fallen birch tree and took the birch bark and used that as aninspiration for the entire table dã©cor. so obviously, we're going to get a real naturalfeel using that as our foundation. and then, just going through the centerpiecefor you, all the flowers here are either local

or certified organic. so, we've got some sprayroses here and some gaudacia here, from the local farmers market. so we are supportingour local farms. and then, these white roses here are certified organic flowers. a lotof local florists are starting to carry certified organic flowers too, so those are great optionsfor the flowers. our farmers market flowers are in this vintagevase. it is actually a sugar holder, but for the night we took out the sugar, put it insomething separate and used this for the table dã©cor. so it's really great to use thingsthat you have around the house or vintage items to introduce into the table, ratherthan buying things that you are going to use for one night.

other items, like this, are these cool, beautifulvegetables and fruits. there's one there and we have these citrus fruits that are so interestingand again, from farmers markets, you are supporting the local vendors and then at the end of themeal, you take this and for tomorrow's dinner, you can throw it in a pot steam it like cauliflower. here, you can see these adorable, little pineconecandles. these are from the bee man candle company and they are pure beeswax, which isan incredible alternative to paraffin candles. most candles, which are made from paraffin,are petroleum based, so you want to try to avoid that. and they smell great. so other aspects of the table that make itspecifically eco-friendly and a little bit

interesting, include the napkins, which areall made from vintage scarves. i love this idea and i think it is a really fun idea thatanyone can do... and what we did, we took vintage scarves and we took linen and we sewedthem together. so you have one side is a usable napkin and the other side are these interestingscarves, which some of them came from my closet, some from my mother's closet... so you getthis very fun, a lot of introduction of a lot of unique color. and again, it's a reallycool thing to just have on the table, and obviously you can re-use these again and again,which is better than using a disposable napkin. our final accent on each napkin was this creamcity ribbon. so this is a cotton-based made in the u.s., totally biodegradable and allthe dyes are water-based. so it is super easy,

you just cut it off the roll. it is this alreadyin this form you just kind of slip it right through this napkin, and it is a great littleaccent. and that is our rustic dinner table. enjoy.

sponge applicators, masking tape, primer andpaint. i'm going to paint 5 drawers, 2 in pink and 3 in aqua blue. i'll also add littlewhite dots on top, which will look adorbs, just wait for it! so let's start with thefirst drawer. we're just going to paint the front, so to keep that neat edge we need toprotect the inside with the masking tape. make sure your furniture is clean and dryand you're set to start painting. well, first we have to apply primer which assures thatpaint sticks firmly to the furniture and will last us many years. leave the primer to drycompletely and finally here comes the fun part â€“ color! let's start with this prettypink. give the paint a stir and then just paint the front of the drawer and the sideedge. i love how with paint your can totally

transform a room for such a low price. let'smove to the blue paint. i love this blue-aqua, it's so beautiful! apply one even coat andlet the drawers dry for a day. then apply another coat. my paint was actually quitethick and one coat would do the job but i still decided to go for two. and here areall my painted drawers â€“ so pretty! leave them dry completely before you start drawingthe dots. here i am marking where each dot should be â€“ i went for 3 inches betweenthe dots and 1.5 inches between each row of dots. to make a perfect dot i am using a bigcircle puncher. make a circle hole in a piece of a masking tape to get this neat dot stencil.stick it on the drawer and paint the inside of the dot with a sponge applicator dippedin white paint. the perfect dot! if you want

the dotting to go faster you can also justmake them using a sponge applicator as it's shape is rounded. but i really wanted mineto look perfect so i took time for it. my blue drawer is done and look how beautifulit is! and here is the pink one finished too! all my drawers are done and i can't even explainhow happy i am with them. let's put them in place! i love how the white dots connect thepainted drawers with the rest of the furniture which i kept white. i adore my new furniture! for the bedding i chose a simple white onewith pink accents saying love is in the air. oh yeah! i also got this textured blanketfor when it gets a bit chilly. and i love to decorate my bed with pillows, a lot ofpillows! since they can actually be quite

pricey, i made this gorgeous smile and chevronpillows myself. i'll show you how to make the smile one first. to make it you will needan empty pillow case, which you can get for very cheap, scissors, fabric glue and wool. take your wool and write anything you like,i decided to write the word smile on my pillow because you know what they say: just smileand the world will smile with you. once you are happy with how the word looks like justtake your fabric glue and stick the wool in place. lift it up, apply a bit of glue andpress the wool down on the pillow case. in the end i am adding a little spiral abovethe letter â€œiâ€ to represent the dot. and we are all finished with the adorable smilepillow. this project is literally done in

2 minutes and it doesn't really get any cuter!you can also make this pillow for a friend and maybe write his or her name on for a beautifulpersonalized gift. but i am keeping this one for myself! another idea is a chevron pillow. you'll needa white pillow case, masking tape, a pot for color, sponge applicators or a paint brush,scissors and fabric paint. if you want to protect the edges of the pillow like me, stickmasking tape pieces along all the four sides. now make the first chevron row by stickingmasking tape in a chevron pattern. then stick another chevron row right above this firstone and add another above that one. peel away the middle row and you get the perfect chevronrow stencil, which we're going to color later.

i love this technique because it gives youthe perfect parallel chevron rows and neat pillow in the end. okay, our chevron stencilis all ready for painting. i decided for pink and blue, surprise, surprise, to match myroom. first i am making a blue row using a sponge applicator. for a crisp and neat edgei recommend to move from the tape towards the center of the row. that way you preventthe color from leaking under the tape causing a messy chevron edge. when all the rows arecolored, peal away the masking tape to reveal the perfect chevron pattern. you can use morethan two colors or even just one for a more classic chevron pillow. i love making my owndecoration for the room because i can tailor them to suite my room perfectly. you can stophere because it already looks fantastic but

i decided to color the edges too. protectthe freshly painted chevron pattern with the masking tape and apply the color along thesides. remove the tape, leave your beautiful pillow to dry for a few hours and you areready to decorate your room with this masterpiece. i really like how these pillows make my bednot just incredibly cosy, but also absolutely gorgeous to look at. ok, my bed is pretty but there's stil a lotof room on my desk and dresser so let's make some quick decorations to put on those. forthis lovely colored sand cactus you will need some sand preferably white, cactus, biggerglass, food coloring, toothpicks, a few more glasses or pots for the sand and somethingto stir the sand with. distribute the sand

between glasses, i have four of them as ialso have 4 food colors. time for the fun part - coloring the sand! take a small amountof water and mix in a bit of color. i have blue, pink, green and yellow. pour the coloredwater in the sand and mix well to distribute the color evenly. if you put the food colordirectly into the sand glass the color won't incorporate evenly. trust me i tried it. it'smuch better to mix it with water first. how pretty do these look! i love them, i justwant to eat them! okay, now you have to let the sand dry completely... and then it's timeto make a pretty sandy house for our cactus. starting with green, off you go into the glass!i put my sand in little plastic bags just so it'll be easier to pour. place the cactuson and let's continue with pink. i love plants

but let's be honest all my plants die, soi figured a cactus is a low maintenance plant that gives life to your room but doesn't requiremuch time. that's perfect for me. look how beautiful sandy waves we're getting! i amabsolutely in love with this dã©cor idea. looks stunning and i had so much fun makingit. but be careful with cactuses, these guys can be really mean! a cute butterfly lamp, anyone? for this oneyou'll need a plain lamp, a bunch of colorful butterflies and a glue.we are going to decorate the lamp cover with these shiny friends. i am starting on top- all you have to do is put a drop of glue on the back of the butterfly and stick iton the cover. unique lamps can be quite expensive,

whereas this plain one cost me around 4 dollarsand i also got the chance to make it exactly how i like it! i bought these butterflieson the internet for a couple of dollars, so 6 bucks for this pretty lamp - not bad i'dsay. the top part is covered with the flying beauties so let's continue on the sides. tomake the lamp cover stay in place while working you can put something like a masking tapeinside. instead of the super glue that i am using, you can also go for a glue gun. butwhichever you are using be careful that you don't stick your fingers together! here goesthe final butterfly and we are finished with this unique lamp. it creates such a prettyshuttered light full of butterfly shadows. and can also work as a hat...

we all love candles... but how about thesesuper stunning colored candles made out of crayons? you'll need a candle glass, candlewick, crayons and white wax. select three colors, i'm going with green, pink and blue.put some wax in the pot and add a piece of crayon. now you need to melt the wax and crayonso you can either put it in a microwave, just make sure to use a microwaveable pot or justmelt it above the candle like me. i like watching how the wax melts and mixes with crayon. feelinglike a lab scientist. when everything is nice and melted give the colored wax a stir. herewe have the pink and here the blue. place an eraser under one side of the glass, holdthe candle wick in the middle and pour the melted wax in. when the first layer is dry,place the eraser under the other side of the

glass and pour your second color in. lastly,remove the eraser and pour your last color on top for that neat horizontal ending. you'releft with a gorgeous colorful candle. you can also use more than 3 colors. here i decidedfor a smaller slope and 4 wax colors. now your candles will give you that cosy warmfeeling and a nice pop of color to your room even when they're not burning. a very cute way of incorporating low maintenanceplants to your room is a bamboo stick in a tube with water decorated with colorful stones.hold your bamboo stick in the middle of the vase and pour in stones in colored layers.i started with green, then red and lastly yellow. that's it, how easy, fast and prettyis this diy! if you don't have a bamboo you

can totally make this stone terrarium withany plant of your choice and it will for sure brighten up any room. we also need to make some decorations forour wall, right? first iâ€™m going to show you how to make this awesome paper flowergarland, which doubles as a hawaian necklace.you will need some colored paper, i have somepatterned as well, scissors, stapler, hole puncher, pencil, ruler and a string.measure a rectangle of about 5 by 2 inches, you can also make it larger if you want biggerflowers, and thenjust cut it out with scissors. fold your rectangle three times along theshorter side and unfold it again. we did this just to get these guiding lines all along.then fold the paper again but this time in

the zig zag manner like me. time to take ourstapler and make a punch in the middle of that little rectangle. cut away the cornersdiagonally, this will give you that pretty flower shape. open up your flower by joiningthe sides together and secure them in place with your stapler. now just make a bunch ofthem in different colorsâ€¦ arenâ€™t they pretty?! when you have enough of flowers weare ready to thread them on the string. make two holes in each flower using a hole puncher.as you can see, i like leaving an empty petal between two petals with holes. finally leadthe string through the holes youâ€™ve just made to hang all these cuties on. voila! weare all finished with this adorable flower garland. you can hang it above your bed, dooror window, i decided to place it on the wall

above my desk, so that when i am working ican see this beautiful creation in front. i love how it gives a lot of color and textureto my wall. another great wall art idea is this colorfulcanvas painting with a word on. the things we need are a masking tape, acrylic paintin different colors and sponge applicators. to start off stick your masking tape on thecanvas to write any word you like. you can be very creative here but keep in mind thatletters that consist only of straight lines are a bit easier to make â€“ like the wordlive, which i went for. once your word is set you can color the painting in any possibleway. i went for bright neon colors and i decided to make wave shapes all over the paintingusing my sponge applicator. i decided to go

for the word live, just to remind me thatevery moment is a treasure that we have to cherish and enjoy. sometimes i get so busywith planning for the future, i get so excited about things that are about to happen andi kind of forget that the present is all that we actually have. i love this idea becausein the end the painting turns out so neat with the pretty letters while you can justslap the color on the canvas, not worrying at all. there we go. my canvas is entirelycovered in these happy fluorescent colors, so the only thing left for me to do is toremove the masking tape. see how cool it looks! this painting will not just make your walllook gorgeous, but it will also remind you to live life to the fullest every time yousee it.

i love having freshly cut vase flowers inmy room, but unfortunately they can be really expensive and they donâ€™t really last long.no problem, because you can easily make these adorable pom pom flowers which will last forever.youâ€™ll need some small tree branches, wool, scissors and glue.take your wool and wrap it around 4 of your fingers about 100 times. the more wool youwrap the fuller and prettier your pom pom when finished. after a while youâ€™ll endup with a fluffy ball like this one. take a short piece of wool and wrap it around yourwoolen ball tightly. you end up with a bow shaped fluffiness. take your scissors andcut through the loops on both sides. the bow shape is gone but no problem because we gota cute fluffy pom pom with a bit messy hairstyle,

which we need to take care of. so just havefun with scissors and give your pom pom that lovely rounded shape. here you can decidewhether you want your flowers to be smaller and daintier or larger. i decided for bigstatement pom pom flowers, so i am keeping the fluffy balls nice and large. make moreof these using different wool colors for a more interesting colorful bouquet. i wentfor green, purple, yellow, blue and red. itâ€™s time to attach some stems to our flowers,so take your tree branches, i got mine from a park nearby. apply some glue and place ona pom pom. there you go, weâ€™ve got a beautiful flower bouquet ready to put in the vase.i decided to just use a jar as a vase. hmm... i think somethingâ€™s missing here. letâ€™sgo pick up some stones and fill up the vase

hi, everyone my name is kelsey and my name is becky and we are the sorry girls and today we are here with wendy. hi, my name is wendy. i have a youtube channel called withwendy i do sewing and diy videos there, so obviously we have to work together she's amazing! this collab was requested so many times. it's unbelievable. i'm so happy it's finally happening yeah yeah, so today. we're doing some like dorm slash student apartments slash regular apartment diys which is so exciting we have three on our channel three on my wendys channel? oh my goodness i cannot believe how adorable they turned out

boho chic vibe, but we were all just like loving and it is all good. it was good. i'm excited yes, all right, so we should we get into how we made these yeah let's start off with how we made the palette bed to make this pallet bed start by gathering four large pallets are similar in size and heights pallets can often be found left out for recycling, but make sure you always ask them for taking from any person or business. take a look at the pallets for stamps indicating that it hasn't been chemically treated. lay the palette out with the bottoms up and do a check for any exposed nails or rough spots. we gave the bottoms a light sand to protect our floors now is also a good time to fix any height issues we added some boards to one of our lower sitting pallets now flip the pallets over into their final positions

again remove any exposed nails and fix loose boards we added some planks in to cover up a small gap between two of our pallets to support our mattress we use two boards of mdf that were three by four feet each we screwed them down into the center of the pallet base now using a power sander sand down the remaining exposed pallet pieces. make sure that you sand the top of the boards really well to avoid any splinters. and as a final step we coated the tops of our boards with white paint once the paint is dry. you're good to add on your mattress and bedding! next up, i'll show you how to make the diy curtains so to make the curtains you're going to want to measure the total height that you want to cover and then by two

times that amount so that you have enough for two curtain panels. the fabric that i chose is really lightweight to give it that dreamy look and we're going to cut and sew this very quickly into a curtain. first you're going to want to tear a strip from that entire piece of fabric that is 7 centimeters wide. we're going to use this to make the top loops for the curtain. to sew these loops unfold over one side about a third of the way then bring over the other side tucking in a little strip so that all the raw edges are hidden away if you add a straight stitch all the way down that folded edge. it's going to seal it off

and then we have one big long strip that we can cut up to make the individual loops. here's how that finished long strip looked so as you can see there is the one straight stitch going all the way down that little folded edge and it locks everything in place i needed 16 loops in total, 8 for each side of the curtain and so i folded the fabric in half over and over until i got to 16 layers in total and then cut those apart with a pair of scissors. taking each of these strips we're going to fold it in half and then sew them with a straight stitch along the top edge of the curtain i put eight on each curtain so you just have to space enough to equal distance from each other. here's how the top edge of the curtain looks. i have the top

lip folded over just a little bit and then i sewed with a straight stitch attaching the loops every so often. along the left and right side of each curtain i fold the fabric in twice and did a straight stitch to hem it all off. when you look at it from the outside everything is all clean the raw edges are hidden away and your curtains are done! and lastly we're going to show you how to make this stepladder nightstand! to make the step ladder side table, start by gathering four pieces of wood that are three feet long for each of the table legs. for the shelves, we're using a piece of wood that is six inches wide and a piece that is ten inches wide start by cutting each of the shelf pieces to 20 inches long out of our four leg pieces. we're going to angle two of them

draw out 25 degree angles on each end and cut off the extra wood with the remaining two legs cut them each to 21 and a half inches long now that everything's cut sand it all down for a smooth finish. now, it's time to assemble! line the steep side of one of the angled leg pieces up against the top of a straight leg piece. drill a pilot hole through both pieces to keep the wood from splitting then add a small amount of wood glue and screw the pieces together. repeat this for your two remaining leg pieces now we can connect the two v-shaped legs together with our two shelf pieces slide the shelves up between the legs until they set where you'd like them again drill pilot holes into the sides add on some wood glue and drill them into place

(upbeat, energetic music) - (gasping) oh my god, that's so cute! - hello! we are on our way to charlotte's dorm to check out her space and see if we can give her an awesome makeover. charlotte just started school, she's a freshman, her roomis pretty basic right now, we're gonna see what we can do.

let's go. hi charlotte! this is charlotte's dorm room! (enthusiastic music) so this is your roommate's side over here. - yeah. so we're not gonna touch this side, we're just gonna do charlotte's side. - i like, like, dim lighting, like

i don't like overhead lights. - just cozy.- cozy. - i love plants. like, so much, as you can see. - [steph] yeah, i cansee all sorts over there. - um, and i like to put stuff on my walls, but i have not bought anything. (laughs) to put on my wall yet.

- [steph] we can fix that!(both laughing) awesome! i think we have everything we need! so, we're gonna go figure out how we can upgrade your dorm room! - sweet! i'm so excited. - yay! (popping)

(ringing) - the first diy that i'mgonna make is a lap desk. this way she can workwhile she's on her bed, or on the couch. the things that i'm using for this are a picture frame, a pillow,and some pretty, soft fabric. the first thing we're gonna do is take this thing out of this frame. i have wrapping paper,you can use anything.

you can use a photo, youcan use a piece of fabric, i'm just gonna use this, andstick it right in the frame. (cheerful music) time to cut up my pillow. i'm just using a regular old pillow, just one that i probably wouldhave thrown away otherwise. i'm just gonna draw a line,so i know where to cut it. fold it closed. safety pin it shut!

i'm gonna take my fabric! i'm just going to lay it right on top. try and get it as centered as possible, and shove all of myfabric into the middle. remember, this thing, that wegot rid of, we need it again. just kind of, situate your fabric in whatever way makes the most sense. top it off with this guy. you're gonna pull all thefabric back out the edges.

throw that guy on top. you just kind of wrap thefabric around the inner frame, and then push the little pins down so that it holds the frame in place. all right, i haveroughly rolled the edges, now i'm just gonna gluethem down with hot glue. okay, i got all the cornerstucked in, nice and pretty. i think this is done. so now she can just puther laptop right on here,

set it on her lap whileshe's sitting in bed or wherever she is, and justhave a nice, little cozy table. desk. thing. one thing that is super easy to diy and great for anyonewho is feeling homesick, like most collegestudents, is to make a map of your hometown, or your home state, or your home country,or wherever you're from.

and draw it out usingmaterials from that place. for charlotte, i'm using dirt from oregon. and it's so easy, i'm just drawing it out with some glue, i'm dumping some dirt on top of it that i got from oregon, and then you just wait a little while for it to dry, you pop itin a frame, and it's done. and i think it looks socute, it's a really cool little piece of art that willalways remind you of home,

and i really thinkcharlotte's gonna love it. okay, for this next diy i'm going to make a neon sign, totally diy, super cheap and affordable, and it'sgonna look super cute. so, the first thing youdo when you're making a neon sign, is drawwhatever you want it to say. the easiest thing to do isto write something in cursive because it all connects andyou can connect the wires together, and it'll flow beautifully.

okay, so once you haveyour word drawn out, you're gonna take a piece of string, doesn't matter what it looks like, you're gonna throw itaway when you're done. and this is so you canmeasure out the length of wire that you're going to need. so i'm going to measure that out and make sure i have enough. and i'm also going to make sure

that i have enough el wire, which is what i'm gonna beusing for the neon light. you can get it online inpretty much any color, and i got this for $8, so.(cash register) can't get better than that. i'm using this wire, igot it in the same color as my light, or at least a similar color. you wanna get a wire that is pretty stiff, but you can still bend it with your hand.

okay, now that i havea rough shape bent out in my wire, i'm goingto use some superglue and glue it all together sothat it doesn't fall apart. and now that i have a significant amount of superglue on all ofmy fingers, it's done! let's see how this looksin charlotte's dorm. we are in charlotte's dorm room. got a lot of work to do. i'm here with addy, charlotte's sister.

let's get to work. let's start with the desk. the desk is kind of thefocal point of the room, it's where charlotte is gonna do all of her schoolwork, spend most of her time. one super easy way to kindof spice up your desk, is to put a piece of prettyfabric over your bulletin board, because you can still pinthings through a fabric, it's just gonna lookway prettier than cork.

i also wanted to kind of give her a theme to go with her warm colors,bring the whole room together. so for an accent color i chosegold, it goes really well with warm colors, likereds and pinks and purples. and that's what's gonna be what all of her accessories are on her desk. planner. everybody needs a planner. (record scratching)

it's so scary. like, little floppy skeleton. bookends are a really cute way to hold all your books together, since you do have a ton of textbooks in college. and you'd be surprisedhow many nice bookends you can find in a thriftstore for like, two bucks. also, if you have a lot of random junk juts kind of laying around everywhere,

get yourself some baskets. a couple of cute baskets on your desk where you can just throw all of your shit into and not even worry about it, is gonna make your roomlook so much nicer, even if inside of those baskets is a mess. out of sight out of mind. shelf risers are awesome, they're amazing. i love them.

the one i put in charlotte's room i found at a discount store, super affordable, and it adds a whole new layer of shelving. it's amazing. especially if you have tons of room above your desk that goes nowhere and there's just wasted space. get yourself some shelvesor some shelf risers. it will change your life.

charlotte said she wanted her room to feel warm, and cozy, she wanted some ambiance, so i got her some twinkle lights, i think that is the best, and easiest way to make your room feel cozy, so you don't have these harsh overheadlights everywhere. i love the ones that arelike, a curtain of lights, that's what i got for her, and i'm gonna put them behind her bed as ifit's kinda like a headboard.

you can also do the sameeffect with a tapestry, or a big piece of art, but i think hanging something big like that behind your bed is a really cool way tokind of create the illusion that you have a cool headboard? when really, you don't. (addy sighs)(laughing) (steph and addy laughing) - addy!

- okay, okay, we'll get there. we'll figure it out. since charlotte has a lot of photos of her friends, and her family, and is probably feelinga little bit homesick here in new york, farfar away from oregon, i felt like having a corkboardwasn't quite enough space to display all of these photographs. so i also got her this metal grid thing.

it's kind of like a very modern corkboard that i've seen kind of trending on pinterest and everywhere these days. but it looks super cool, i'm hanging it up on her closet, because there's not really anything going on there. and she can just clip on papers, or photos with little safety pins andit will look so much better than like, taping themto the wall or something.

charlotte has a great bedspread. i'm so happy i didn'thave to go out and buy her a new one, because theone she has is awesome. but when i walked in there,she had it covered up! it was covered up with aboring, plain, white blanket! what're you doing you're killing me. - i don't think i'veever seen this bed made. - we don't want to coverthat up, we want to see it. so i'm taking it off, throwing it away,

revealing this beautifulbedspread that she has, and everything else isgonna match this bed. so i got her some nice orange pillowcases to replace her boring white ones, and they match the accents in the bedspread. charlotte has this huge, beautiful window looking out onto new york city, it's so nice, but it is drab. it's got these horrible blinds,

so we're gonna hang upsome really cute curtains that i got from a thrift store. you can also just usea sheet, or just some cheap fabric, it doesn'teven have to be a curtain, just drape it across andit'll do the same thing. one thing that charlotte said she really wanted were pillows. just, pillows everywhere. and since your dorm roomis your entire home,

you don't have a living room,you don't have any other space to hang out, whenyou have friends over, they're probably gonna sit on the bed. it's like your couch. it's probably more ofyour couch than your bed, so one way to create thateffect is to just get a bunch of pillows, linethem up against the wall and around the corner, so it creates this kind of couch effect whenyou're not sleeping in it.

and then just take themoff when you go to bed. two of these pillows imade out of old t-shirts that i probably wouldhave just thrown away if i didn't use them for this. same with the pillows,they were old and cheap and you can find them anywhere. or you can just use stuffing, you don't have to usea pillow, you can just, stuff it full of pillowstuffing, which is even cheaper.

but they're super easyto make, it's so nice to diy your own pillows, especially when you have a bunch of old t-shirts that you don't know what to do with. it really adds a nice piece of home there. and then the other ones i just picked up from thrift stores, from discount stores, from people who didn't want them anymore. pillows can be veryexpensive, but if you know

where to find them, it's so easy to get a cheap, nice pillow. when you're using a lot of pillows in a small space, it'sgood to have a nice variety of sizes, and textures, and colors. i got some that were fuzzy, some that were patterns, and that were solid. a bunch of different sizesto kind of mix it up a bit. now i already got the twinkle lights

to make this room a little bit cozier, but it still needs something else. so i really wanted toget her some candles, give her that niceambiance that she wants. but unfortunately, dormrooms don't allow you to have candles, or an open flame. or do anything fun. luckily, i was able to finda huge pack of flameless, electric, battery-operatedcandles on amazon.

so cheap, so affordable,you get a million of them. and honestly, they look pretty real. i also got her a bunch of fake plants because i know she lovesplants, but it is very hard to take care of plantsas a college student, especially when you don't havea lot of light in the room, or you may not be aroundvery often to water them. so i just got her ahandful of fake plants, some of them i got from the dollar store,

some of them i got from the thrift store, some of them i got on sale. i think the plantscombined with the dirt art of oregon really compliment each other in a way that i didn't even anticipate. it just brings a nice earthyatmosphere to the room. and i know she loves that, because it's very reminiscent of oregon. and her home.

and what she loves. and it's really gonna makethis room feel like home. when you're in collegeand you have a dorm room, with a roommate like charlotte, no matter how close youare with that person, they could be your best friend, you are gonna want some privacy. so for charlotte i'm creatinga big room divider for her. i think it's going to be really helpful,

but not super obtrusive,she can kind of tie it to the side if she doesn't want it. so what i'm using for thisis just a gigantic piece of fabric that i found on clearance. it was like $2 a yard, which is awesome. so i have six yards ofthis very wide fabric that i'm going to cutin half so that it is two three yard pieces,which should theoretically reach from the ceiling to the floor.

now what i'm gonna dowith this is just fold over one of the edges so thati can slip a rope or a string through it, and just glueit down with hot glue. and then just do the exact samething with the other piece, on the same piece of rope sothat it all connects together. and you can put togetheras many pieces of fabric that you want, you canjust match the colors, make it just a crazy, random curtain of different fabrics,do whatever you want.

and just keep adding curtains until your rope is as long as your wall. easy as pie. so now whenever charlotte and her roommate want some privacy, theycan just take the curtains, close it right in the middle of the room, and then they can open itback up when they're done. the easiest thing for this would be to use like a huge bed sheet

or something that's very large because even though it's a dorm room, it's still pretty big. i'm amazed! - [addy] no way. - and it's like, easy to slide. i think we're like, done. it's done, we have completed it. after so many hours of hard work,

rustic decorating ideas

my name josh and this is my diy channel videoeppo i donâ€™t like long intros, but this is important,so hang on with me a bit. i am not experienced, or professionally qualifiedto operate any of the power tools i use. in fact this is first time ever, i am holdinga chain-saw. i donâ€™t own it, its on rent ,and thus doesnâ€™thave an instruction manual the owner gave me a set of instructions andi referred to a lot of tutorial videos before trying this out. safety is a must. dust protection mask, ear protection, eyeprotection is absolutely necessary.

for the head protection, i am using my ridinghelmet. i know it funny something is better than nothing next thing is, i am not going to chop downa tree just because i have some crazy ideas and i am going to make a video on it. the logs that you see in the video are harvestedfrom trees that were victims of a cyclone. the cyclone swept about 50% of cities greeneryand the trees in the backyard fell. some made it and some didnâ€™t. the ones that didnâ€™t, will make way to myworkshop. let me gear up and get started!

making sure the wood log doesnâ€™t fall onme after being cut and carefully choosing my positions i cut the tree logs from themain tree. the camera angle are not so clear becausei was focussing on the tree logs and also needed to make sure that the falling log doesnâ€™tknock my camera down. it might seem simple, but it did take quitea bit of effort in cutting down these logs into the size that i could carry. a black t-shirt on a hot summer afternoonproved to be foolish. i changed, and got back to work again. .the logs were moved where i could continue

working comfortably. to cut these into further smaller pieces ,thelogs were placed on heavy rocks so that, they would not move while its being cut. with the basic plans made for this video thelogs were cut to the desired size. i was aiming for 6 projects for this and neededget all logs ready before sunset and return the chainsaw the next day,these were brought in to the workshop, all possible tools with me were fetched. i am aiming for an unfinished natural lookso these tools could do the job.

first thing was to sand the top of the logsto get rid of saw tooth marks. flap disc on an angle grinder chews theseup easily . again, safety gears are important here aswood chips fly everywhere. once done , sanding with a sand paper helpsget a better finish the first project is colour pencil stand. using my kidâ€™s mechanics toy, the log wasmarked where holes needed to be drilled. i thought of lining them up and securing witha tape , but i figured it might get caught in the drill and fling on my face. punch holes were made for the drill bit tocatch , makes it a lot easier later.

drill bit was chosen to the correspondingsize of a pencil, approximately 10 mm using the drill press stand, holes were made. once done , the pencil were inserted and itlooks cool. to make the colour of the log darker, it wasoiled using a rag and let to dry overnight then a few coats of wood polish were addedto preserve the wood. with this we complete our first project. the next project is very simple. heat pads for the dining table. thin strips of logs were sanded.

by oiling and finishing with wood polish weare almost done adding a bit of decorative touch helps. the heat pads are done but these could beused for so many things, imagination is the key for this third project , the core of the logwill be hollowed and made into a wood log planter or a flower vasethe inspiration comes from steve ramseyâ€™s video. in fact i will be the first video to pop-up if are looking to make something with tree logs thank you steve the center was marked for the part to be scooped out. this log is large and so wouldnâ€™t fit inmy drill stand. so using a spade bit , it was drill manually.

the plan was to make multiple holes and thenchisel the center part after an hour, there wasnâ€™t much progress. therefore i headed out to the hardware storeto get a forstner bit and the maximum size available in the shop was 25 mm. even this did not help and i went back tochiselling it and i took 4 hours to hollow it out. using a homemade spindle , inspired by jack houwelingâ€™s video the edges were sanded smooth. a flap disc was mounted on the drill to accessthe bottom.

after finishing the log with oiling and polish,it was time to plant something in there. let me try a few things hereplacing a bunch of artificial flowers and filling it up decorative stone makes a nicetable top vase. you could try different options here i designed this to grow lucky bamboo.a although it can hold water, for easy access and cleaning, a pet bottle was cut and placed inside. then placing the bamboo inside adds to thatfeng shui touch. this can be made into a planter but a drainagehole must be drilled in the bottom.

but this log particularly comes from neem treewhich could shunt the growth of a main plant. itâ€™s a bit of concern. the fourth project is a treasure chestthe centre of the log was scooped out as previously shown. when the logs were cut, a specific portionwas chosen for the lid and the base. after oiling and wood polish, the lid wasnailed with the base for sliding action for opening and closing. there are magnets inside the wood to holdthe lid in place, but are not strong enough. it could be nice thing to store my coin collectionand old currency. but this will be better cherished by my wife.

for the 5th project, a log was hollowed outtoo. but this time it going to stand up vertical,housing a glass container and in this case its going to be a light bulb. see my video on light bulb terrarium on howto hollow the light bulb. just to emphasis, clear the broken glass piecesimmediately there is a hole on top of the setup to pourwater and the light bulb is secured with hot glue. just for sake of demonstration, i am keepinga single bamboo plant in there, feng shui recommends specific numbers of stalks forspecific kind of energy

for the six and final project, a simple logwas cut, and coated with wood polish. two holes were made and these would housetwo candles. you might have guessed it; itâ€™s going tobe a candle stand. just so the wood doesnâ€™t catch up on firetwo washer are placed. a piece of aluminium foil was cut, rolledand inserted into those slots and now we are done. tiny holes were drilled and artificial leaveswere glued to complete the project. so there you have it, ^ projects from thewood and many more yet to come. i try different things so would take breakand come to it later.

for that. there is this really cute racecar themed bedding. we have a little cute sporty stuff. let's walk through some of the items that you got. when you have. you want to prepare for all aspects of

college life or whatever you are going back to college for. we even meet a lot of students over the years dish actually just this past year just to find out what it is that they may have forgotten that was frequently forgotten days just to help to get them prepared a

little bit better. but you don't want to forget about your towels and toiletries. and you mentioned also flatware and plates. all of that stuff is one of the most forgotten items as well. you think i'm just going to

and if you use magnetic cookware which we also have at ikea, it heats up really fast and it only heats up when you put the cookware on the surface. as soon as you take it off the surface is cool again. that is great and deftly supersafe.

i remember in college there were restrictions on what you could bring into the dorm room because of fire hazards and all of that and the checklist option is great so you don't forget things like your cups and plates and things like that.

what else did you bring? we have great organizing items. you don't want to forget you will most likely have closet space and don't forget things like hangers. remember trash baskets, under bed storage. especially here if you are

going to college in pennsylvania, the weather is a little crazy in the fall and people don't realize that you are going to knee-jerk summer clothes and went to close both and a place to store them. there is boxes for that as well. i know you are holding

an event in the middle of july. this is something if you have the time you will come out to the ikea and robinson. it is july 14 through the 16th. we are going to have workshops. you can take the style quiz and bring your results in and they will help you even more to
