Sound Royalties, a company started by investor Alex Heiche in 2014 which specializes in providing advances on future royalties for songwriters and musicians who often resort to selling parts of their publishing or songwriting rights to earn short-term cash in exchange for long-term profits, thus surrendering financial control of their creative work."We provide advances that aren't based on 100 percent recoupment, so that enables an artist or a songwriter to keep money flowing in, which means they have a higher percentage chance of success rather than being set up for failure and needing to sell," Heiche says. "Secondly, we don't buy copyrights. We only use their music as collateral, because it's non-credit-based, but we don't buy and we don't own."

Now, Sound Royalties is doubling down on their strategy, pledging to pour $100 million in advances into the music industry over the next 24 months, a figure Heiche feels is reasonable after the company self-funded a $10 million pilot program last year helping artists such as Renea navigate uncertain financials while being able to keep their copyrights. In a music industry that is only now recovering monetarily from a 15-year revenue decline, Sound Royalties is one of the several companies providing different options for songwriters and artists who have seen lower advances from traditional labels and publishers over the past several years.

Byron E. Burke has worked in the music and consulting industry for over twenty-seven years. He began at the age of 13 as a gifted trumpet player and DJ from the Westside of Chicago. By the age of 16, he was recognized as one of the top teen DJ’s in Chicago which led him to sign his first record deal with the legendary “DJ International Records” under the group named “B Rude Inc“, along with members Anthony Nash, Shawn Robinson (not in photo), Tommie Williams; including Byron Stingily shortly before the group disbanded in 1997.

Shortly after the disbandment of B Rude Inc., Burke, Stingily along with house music pioneer Marshall Jefferson began working on new music projects such as the Truth (Open Our Eyes) and Ragtyme (I Can’t Stay Away & Fix It Man feat T.C. Roper & Herb Lawson).

By the age of 19, Byron became the Vice President for Burstinglaw Music Productions, Inc. (Burke Burke, Byron Stingily, Herb Lawson) in Chicago, Illinois. The production company produced and worked with artist such as Marshall Jefferson, Kim English, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Tommie Jenkins (Cameo), Billy Beck (Ohio Players) and Masters At Work. His unique ability to compose, produce and critique songs, stage performances, including marketing & promotion strategies, has made him a pioneer in the music industry.

Byron was the creative force behind the legendary house music band from Chicago named Ten City. He co-wrote, produced and remixed songs on the “Foundation” and “State Of Mind” albums for Atlantic Records, including “No House Big Enough” for East/West Records, and “That Was Then, This Is Now” for Columbia Records.

These albums produced ten Top 20 Billboard Magazine dance songs, five Top 10 Billboard Magazine Sales Chart Singles, 10 Top United Kingdom Pop Chart Singles, including a Gold Plaque from Tusk Music, South Africa and a Silver Plaque from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), United Kingdom.

In January 1999, Byron decided to further his education by attending a continuing studies program at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. called “Business 16, From Idea to IPO”. This course set the foundation for Byron to explore his entrepreneur spirit and build relationships with successful individuals in the financial, software development, automotive, television, motion picture, fashion and music industries.

Today, Burke leads BB Media Global Group, leveraging his experience to help clients embrace the new concepts and ideas that help drive new customers and see long term growth by using biblical principles.

After a 17 year hiatus from the music industry, Burke has returned to producing. His first track “Thank You Jesus” was inspired by his love of music and all he has endured.

“I created an instrumental that had a ‘David Bowie’ vibe and I shared it with one of my friends, Tommie Cruse, who just happened to be one of David Bowie's recording engineers,” said Burke on the creation of his latest track.

“I was stunned that he was working with Mr. Bowie at the same time I created the track and would let him check it out.”

After careful consideration, Burke decided to release the track under his own start-up ventures called the "House Music Channel".

Byron was the creative force behind the legendary house music band from Chicago Ten City. He co-wrote, produced and remixed songs on the “Foundation” and “State Of Mind” albums for Atlantic Records, including “No House Big Enough” for East/West Records, and “That Was Then, This Is Now” for Columbia Records.

"In my journey, I have been Blessed to succeed in many facets of this business. The one thing that I have come across consistently is that our community has no awards show, nor anything that recognizes our accomplishments within our community. Yes, there are the Grammys, WMC, American Music Awards, and the Billboard Awards.

Let me address the Grammys....

First and foremost I am a voting member and sit on the Dance board occasionally. We only have 3 awards in total for an entire community.

In a community of millions we all have to compete for only 3 slots?

I am not bashing the Grammys they are trying to honor all genres of music. So they are not in a position to offer more slots neither as far as awards nor on the TV special.

Now let's address WMC....

I have continued to support this conference since it was based in Fort Lauderdale. Problem at hand.... they have open voting. That means anyone can email in a vote. In my opinion, if you are popular enough and have an extensive network of people not only can you get nominated you might even win the category.

American Music Awards and the Billboard Awards don’t even have categories for us. At this point you might be asking why I have not approach these organizations to adopt new ways of voting or to allow us more categories.

I have…. I was met with no change. I respect their choice to run their organizations as they see conducive for their business. When you look at other genres in the music industry, they all have established their Award shows that celebrate and honor their own.

For example:

Hip-hop. The BET Hip-Hop awards

Gospel...Stellar Awards

I can go on and on.

My motto in life is: stop complain about it...fix it!

The Dj Hall of Fame has the best possibility of fixing this over sight. I feel it is way over due for our own Red carpet Televised event that honors many of Best Djs, Artists, Producers, Remixers, and all music industry affiliated.

Before I go into why it is important for you to join and become a voting member, let me address our Facebook members.

You will always be welcomed to everything. You will not be excluded from our events or ceremonies. We will welcome your nominations via the website Djhalloffamegroup.com.

In order for us to build this organization to be respected by the masses we need a minimal fee from each voting member to cover costs.It’s going to take the village to build this together….

A voting member will get the following benefits:

Still not enough....

We are the first to begin an accurate and truthful archiving of DJs and Music starting from the 70’s on to the new age of music know as House, EDM, etc. This will be based on accurate research of the past, present and future. We will dedicate a wall to those that have paved the way in our industry but are no longer with us.

The most important reason to become a voting member…

No one can deny that you had a had a principal role in making sure that we honored our own! (It will be etched in glass) If you have pride in your contribution to our music, which I know you do…

A minimal amount of $35 US dollars (which is 25 euros, which is 22 pounds, etc.) is a price you cannot pass up to honor your peers.

Side note: I know I spend more than $35 every week in a club or restaurant. At this moment you might be thinking… “Get rich scheme” The minimal fee of $35 does not allow the possibilities to get rich. Binders, certificates, meet and greets, web seminars, Televised shows, Awards, etc. all cost money. Do the math.

Further, once a year we will have a meeting that goes over every dollar brought in vs what is spent. Transparency and clarity is a must for me!

I hope you are receiving why it is important for us to build this organization. If you believe differently, I Respect your choice not to join. I still Respect you as part of our community and you are welcome to still be a member on all of our social networks and we still welcome your nominees for the Award show.

Please remember that 100’s have already join and committed to this vision and belief!I ask one thing of you, please break this negative cycle in our community…when we do not like something we go out to destroy it...

Robert E. Pettibone, Jr. (born 15 July 1959, better known as Shep Pettibone) is a record producer, remixer, songwriter and club DJ, one of the most prolific of the 1980s. His earliest work known to the public was for one of New York City's top disco/dance radio stations, WRKS 98.7 "Kiss" FM, and later as remixer/producer for the disco label Salsoul Records. His prowess at production and mixing led him to work with such artists as Madonna and George Michael in the late '80s during the height of these artists' popularity. Shep's contribution to 1980s club music is too extensive to list completely. He was instrumental in bringing the early underground sound of house music into the pop mainstream by way of a hybrid sound (much to the dismay of some purists who preferred standard disco/dance and R&B). Though he was contemporaneous to others (such as François Kevorkian and Arthur Baker), he is certainly the most prominent DJ/Remixer to bridge the high Disco and House eras in popular dance music.

Lil Louis is the stage name used by Chicago-born house music producer and DJ Louis Burns. He scored a number of hits on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in the 1980s and 1990s, three of which hit #1.

His best known song, "French Kiss," featured vocals by Shawn Christopher and spent two weeks at #1 on the dance chart in 1989. The house track features a several-minutes-long breakdown in which the music gradually slowed down in tempo to a stop. Even with its sensual sound, it crossed over to some pop radio stations and climbed to #50 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was a big success throughout Europe reaching # 2 in the UK Singles Chart and in Germany.

Laurent Garnier's 1997 12" single "Flashback" contained a remix made by Lil Louis called "Lil Louis Civilized Instrumental Painting."

British Jungle/Drum'n'Bass producer Ed Rush remixed the track "French Kiss".

In 2000 fellow producer Josh Wink released "How's Your Evening So Far?"—credited to Wink vs. Lil Louis—a track that heavily sampled "French Kiss." The song peaked at #3 on the dance chart. The song was also sampled in 2000 by female emcee Lil' Kim on the track "Custom Made (Give It To You)," which was featured on The Notorious KIM.

Louis has also released albums under the names Li'l Louis & the World and Li'l Louis & the Party.

In the song "Teachers" off the Homework album by Daft Punk, Lil' Louis is one of the many musicians mentioned.

As one of the prominent, iconic women in the Dance Music business, Abigail Adams’ critical role in the development of New Jersey’s Essex County-centered dance music industry continues to impress upon its new crop of DJ’s, remixers, producers, record labels and recording artists. This former model, Bernardsville NJ born, raised in Summit NJ, earned a BA in Early Childhood Education from Boston College. Abigail began her career in the Dance music arena via her DJ boyfriend, KB. In the early 1980’s, they owned a custom roller skating store in East Orange, NJ, subsequently opening up a store in the famous, “B-Boy friendly” Roxy roller disco in NYC. KB purchased a pair of Technics 1200 turntables and set them up in the East Orange store so he could practice DJing. Customers would inquire about the music KB was spinning, and the ever inventive, “forward-thinking” Abigail made note of the customer’s inquiries and trekked to various NYC record shops like Downtown Records & Vinyl Mania Records to purchase these titles and bring them back to NJ to resell them. Realizing that she could buy them in bulk from the wholesaler, Abigail soon found herself at the beginning of what would become Movin’ Records.

By the mid 1980’s, through her friendships with now legendary DJ’s such as Timmy Regisford, Larry Levan (RIP) and Tony Humphries, her knowledge of recording artists and their discographies grew rapidly. Movin’ Records became THE most influential record shop in the Dance music scene in NJ. Every DJ, recording artist and dance music aficionado from NYC to California from London,

Spain

and

Japan

who is worth his or her salt made the pilgrimage to the shop. It virtually became a “who’s who” of the not only the dance scene but the R&B/Rap world as well. Queen Latifah, Vinnie, Treach & Kay Gee (Naughty by Nature), Red Man, Wyclef and Lauren Hill (The Fugees) were all youngsters hanging out at the store. But it was the underground dance music that lit all of Essex County on fire.

It was Abigail’s relationship with DJ Tony Humphries of Club Zanzibar who was also one of the leading DJ’s on NYC’s 98.7 KISS-FM mastermix show and the club’s former manager, Shelton Hayes, had unknowingly created a unique marketing strategy that catapulted many undiscovered artists into dance world stardom. Using that paradigm, record sales at the store reached unimaginable figures. The birth of Movin’ Records, the label was a natural progression for Abigail due in part to the exploding dance music culture that seemed unstoppable. The Movin’ Records catalogue is full of some of genre’s forthright artists, producers & remixers such as Vicky Martin, Kenny Bobien, Cassio Ware, Boyd Jarvis, Intense, Kerri Chandler, Marshall Jefferson, DJ Pierre, Ce Ce Rogers, Blaze, Larry Patterson and Tony Humphries. “I truly loved and believed in the music that I was selling and putting out on my record label. It was and still is a passion of mine. I supported the local artists and producers from New Jersey because their sound was heartfelt and full of soul and meaningful lyrics”.....

In 1989, during NYC’s New Music Seminar (now known as the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida) Abigail, in association with Shelton Hayes and Club Zanzibar created “Jersey Jams”. It was a special dance music event that featured unsigned recording artists and some of Jersey’s hottest dance music stars. That event received major coverage in the entertainment section of NJ’s Star Ledger, various dance music publications and Vanity Fair magazine. By the early 1990’s, House music proliferated in the mainstream media alongside R&B and Rap. The Movin’ Label and the record shop continued to forge ahead successfully. It is at this time that Abigail was offered a position as club promoter for an event that became known as Scandals housed in East Orange’s Charlie’s West club, previously a white gay establishment. Abigail, along with partner Michael Jasper built a very successful, yet diverse Thursday night party. By the mid 90’s, mainstream’s taste in Dance music began to wane rapidly, in addition to the technological changes in how music is made and consumed. Ultimately, Abigail made the tough decision to close Movin’ Records and the shop. It was a sad day in NJ’s dance music’s history when “Movin’” closed its doors. However, Abigail took this time focus all her attention on her daughter, attend college and be a productive citizen. Nonetheless, the lure of the music business still simmered in her spirit. In the mid 2000’s, Abigail resurfaced in the dance music industry re-establishing old contacts and making new ones around the world. Diving head first into Artist Management, she now represents several recording artists and DJ’s such as Kenny Bobien and Duce Martinez.

The King Of House Music Farley Jackmaster Funk

When a new style of music first cracks the pop charts, the hit is usually a deliberate crossover by an artist having little to do with the music's original pioneers. The first house single to reach the charts, however, was recorded by seminal Chicago DJ and producer, Farley Jackmaster Funk. His cover of Isaac Hayes' "Love Can't Turn Around" made the Top Ten in mid-1986 -- ironically, not in his home country but in the U.K. -- at the same time that he was one of the biggest names in Chicago house. Born in 1962, Farley began DJing while still a teenager. He first made his name in 1981, broadcasting on Chicago's WBMX-FM with Ralphi "The Razz" Rosario, Kenny "Jammin" Jason, Mickey "Mixin" Oliver and Scott "Smokin" Seals as the Hot Mix 5 -- the legendary DJ team which broke house music for a wider Chicago audience. Farley also appeared at the legendary Warehouse club (mixing alongside Frankie Knuckles) and then began a residency at the Playground (later the Candy Store) which set in stone his reputation as one of the city's top DJs.

Known as Farley Keith or Farley Funkin' Keith up to that point, he began recording in 1984 with the single "Jack the Bass," which inaugurated the highly popular jacking craze in Chicago house. After two more singles ("Funkin' with Drums Again," "Give Yourself to Me") for Trax Records, he re-christened himself Farley Jackmaster Funk and released "Love Can't Turn Around," with vocals by Darryl Pandy (often mistaken for Farley on the accompanying video). The single hit the number nine spot on the British pop charts and stunned hundreds of Chicagoans, who had no idea their records were becoming popular across the ocean.

"Love Can't Turn Around" wasn't followed by any other big international hits -- "As Always" made a brief U.K. entry in 1989, while "It's You" was a local club draw -- and by the late '80s, he had lost his DJ residency as well. Fortunately, Farley made a smooth transition to an even more lucrative sport -- the global DJ circuit, where the prospect of hearing an American original brought thousands of club-goers. Never one of the most prolific recording artists in a style of music known for single-a-month release schedules, Farley moved into hip-hop in the early '90s, but returned to house by the mid-'90s with a new protege vocalist, Melanie. He also recorded new material with two other house legends (Adonis and Chip E) as Black Balls, and also released a volume in the mix series House Music Movement. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

What makes a legend: longevity, fame, respect or a combination of the three? Label owner, songwriter, producer and DJ, Mark Grant has been making legendary moves for 23 years now. He is a world traveled DJ with a non-stop tour schedule secured by a fan base that stretches from his hometown Chicago, to as far as Istanbul. Hes produced a number of songs and remixes that have garnered him the respect of his peers and music media. Put it all together and you have an internationally known, well-respected talent who has shown incredible resilience in an industry of one-hit wonders. Its true, Mark Grant has the stuff of legend, but with no signs of stopping, dont call him one, just yet.

Gene Farris

Gene Farris is the sinister minister of electronic music’s changing sounds. Farris’ extensive discography of over fifty productions and global DJ track record is definitely a testament to the true sound of Chicago House. For Farris, music is his undoubted passion that inspires his works of the very best deep, bumpin’, funky, soulful House tracks in the industry. With sultry beatn’ blends in the DJ booth, Farris has been known to entrance and twirl crowds into frenzies making him a party favorite around the world.

Chicago born and raised Gene Farris caught the DJ bug at the tender age of twelve. During that year he was given his first DJ set-up that included a pair of turntables that did not have pitch control and a very basic mixer. Thus, Farris learned to mix the hard way. Inspired by the likes of Ron Hardy, Prince, and Roy Ayers Farris began blending a mixture of funk, disco and soul with eighties’ pop icons such as Duran Duran. His love of disco is still apparent in his work. While making tapes for his neighborhood buddies Farris developed spinning skills into the unique fast and funky dexterous style that we now associate with him. Selling his mix tapes to Windy City record stores like Hot Jams and Gramophone his reputation grew. Farris quickly graduated to “beatn’ down” neighborhood block parties. By the age of seventeen Farris gained his childhood dream slot warming up for Ron Hardy and Ron Carrol at the legendary AKA Club.

As the early nineties approached, Gene Farris quickly became a major player in the thriving Chicago dance scene, and inevitably began to produce his own tracks. Farris’ first production style was tuff, loopy and tracky House. However, his fresh tuff style caught the eye of close friend, Ron Trent, who recommended Farris take his tunes to a new label that Cajmere just started named Relief Records. When Farris went to Relief he met another young Chicago DJ called Sneak, who had also just made his first demo. The pair both had their tracks signed! The 'Farris Wheel EP' was Farris’ debut release for Relief in 1994. Farris, alongside fellow musicians like DJ Sneak, Paul Johnston, Derrick Carter, DJ Rush, Spencer Kinsey, Boo Williams and Glen Underground formed the new wave of notorious, globe trotting Chicago producers.

The ‘Farris Wheel’ EP on Relief Records was the beginning of a prolific production career. Farris’ discography highlights works released on dance music’s most influential labels such as, Defected, Fluential, Soma Records, Siesta, Force Inc., Formaldehyde, 83 West, Communique, Defmix, Doubledown, and Static.

Being a leader in the industry, Gene Farris started his own label, `Farris Wheel Recordings, Inc., in 1998 with ‘The Copa Cabana EP.’ Among the label’s many loved EPs is FWR 008 that includes a DJ Sneak remix of Farris’ `The Spirit.' As the catalog grows, Farris Wheel Recordings, Inc. continues to prosper and gain respectability within the industry. Farris takes pride in discovering new talent from Chicago and around the world such as, studio master mind Jason Heinrichs, heavenly vocalist Lady Sarah, and a live jazz band, Lowend.

In February of 2001, Gene Farris revealed his latest brainchild, Farris Wheel Limited, which is a spin-off of Farris Wheel Recordings. His concept of Farris Wheel Limited is designed to feature more organic productions. Farris Wheel Limited artists are incorporating LIVE feeds into their melodic soulful beats that are filling DJ bags world wide.

When asked about his future in music Gene Farris passionately replies, “House music is my one and only true love. I’ve been with her for over sixteen years and never plan on leaving. She’s my peace... me and the music.”

As the critics continually applaud his greatening accomplishments, Gene Farris and his Farris Wheel Recordings empire continue to thrive.
