Hello there. It's been a while hasn't it? I am still alive, obviously. This blog almost got the boot. I have, for months, been contemplating on pulling the plug on this site because I no longer have the time to give it a well-deserved update. Despite having been busy with things which I would have loved to share with you, I often find myself posting actively on INSTAGRAM instead since it doesn't take much of my time from work and my mommy duties.

However, sentimentality won and I just couldn't really totally bury this baby 9feet below the web ground so am still sticking to it. That said, I guess I would no longer be able to share detailed how to's for crafts and diys (which I honestly do not have time to make anymore anyway these days because my face is constantly buried under illustration work and art pieces).

Anyway I wanna share with you this beautiful DESKTOP CALENDAR I made for the month of May. Yes yes, am happy to say that freebies are back. I may not be able to share some of my diys but i hope i could share more of my artworks through this monthly free download.

I was so inspired by the heaps of sakura photos popping up from almost all social networking sites. I've always said that I am very partial to autumn colors but I must say that spring has started to grow on me. We've been meaning to take a vacation to see our family in Korea and at the same time see the cherry blossom festival this year but sadly it didn't push through because of conflicting schedules. So i painted them sakura instead.

Ai Zome - Indigo Dyeing with Japanese artist Kaoru Iwamoto

Quite of late, I find myself feeling rather blue...like wonderfully addicted to blue. It was most likely triggered by my many trips to Japan surplus stores here in Baguio and La Trinidad. We were hunting for used furniture we could diy to fit in the aesthetics of our new all-white place (yup we've moved...yet again), but i got stuck staring at those lovely white-blue porcelains. They were just so pretty! And when my artist friend Fara told me about this Japanese indigo dyeing workshop happening at Chaya, i felt it was quite serendipitous. I just got to attend it.

We were introduced to Kaoru Iwamoto, an artist from Japan who specializes on indigo dyeing using ai, a kind of leaf which when fermented could produce this really beautiful hues of blue. Kaoru was just wonderful sharing her tips and tricks despite the language barrier. She spoke in Japanese and Chaya's owner Sonoko Taguchi translated it to us in her perfect Taglish.

We were each given a tenugui or "hand towel" for our ai zome dyeing all made of Japanese cotton. You could dye them in bright, deep blue or soft and subtle like those cute little blouses and tiny kimono.

She also taught us different techniques on shibori or "tie dyeing." This was the most fun part as we get to experiment on different designs. It was much like unwrapping Christmas presents when we finally got to snip the bands and see what patterns our knots have created.

I cant wait to sew my tenugui into something, well will show you that on another post instead.

PS. please don't mind my oh-so-messy hair here. You will be happy to hear that i have just had my hair mowed into smithereens!

Tim Burton's "Big Eyes" plus other movies I can't wait to watch

1) Tim Burton's Big Eyes - art, scandal, controversy and paintings of big-eyed waif. The story is based on the life of artists Walter and Margaret Keane. Walter achieved popularity for the Big Eyes paintings in the 1950s...only to be brought to court by his ex-wife who claimed to be the original painter. Years of "painting custody battle" ensued.

2) Disney's Into the Woods - based on what I've read so far, Into the Woods is originally a musical and Disney is now turning it into a movie which, as we would expect, might take a different turn from the original story somewhere in the movie. Though am not very fond of the Act II of the musical, "The once upon a time...later, am a huge sucker for anything fairy tale so let's see how much of this movie get Disney-fied.

My Creative Space in Katha Magazine

I love creative spaces! If I could have it my way, I'd have hundreds of them. Each room would be unique on its own. But one can only have one too many, right? Unbeknownst to the online world, two years ago my family and I made "the big move" from our home to a condo for reasons I would rather not divulge here (am kind of a security phobe, and having experiened security breaches in the past has left me wary on what and what not to share online). Thus explains the different photos of my previous workroom posts from the photos am posting now.

I moved from a whole room to a decent little corner. But I must say that I have never been more happy! New space means new decorating challenge...and I love decorating a room as much as i love working in it. Looking back at my previous workspace, it was quite evident how my work has evolved too. You see, i did a lot of sewing for House of Isla Designs but for over a year now I have been consciously trying to focus more on doing art and producing original prints. And since we don't have any plans of going back to our old home anytime soon, I think you'd be expecting unexpected space changes. For all you know, I might've already moved to a new creative space (*wink)

Before I get lost in my own words, this post was meant to thank the wonderful Katha Magazine group for making me part of their July-August issue with the theme "Local Colors." It was such a great honor to grace one of your pages alongside many other local creatives.

These are two of my most recent paintings and at long last, after years of hesitating and battling my own will (i meant to be truly loyal to watercolor) I finally gave in and used another medium. Frankly i was clueless the entire time i was painting with acrylic since watercolor has always been my comfort zone. No intentions here of being conceited, but i think i did a pretty darn good job. The topmost one was an original concept which I mean to turn into a series of work while the other one was referenced after a vintage illustration of a peony. Can't wait for the next one!

Behind the Scene: Tidbits About The Making of Our Handmade, Handpainted, Exotic Hair-inspired Kitty Wristlet/Purse

Boy, that was a mouthful.

And this post is looooong overdue since our kitty purse had already been successfully circulating around. Still, I thought this cutie deserves a proper introduction and a full length feature.

...because it is the first of its kind in our handmade indie label it being the only fabric art available (which i would give reasons below). I know I have been busy lately with illustrations (not to mention getting down with the big bad flu) for my paper products (ie postcards, art prints and stickers) but long before the latter hit the store shelves, this handmade kitty purse was already in the works.

It started out as a rough sketch of an exotic-haired kitty.

Then came the grueling task of handpainting the image onto over a dozen of them pieces of white fabric. I almost went bonkers with the overwhelming job but was stubborn enough not to give in with the lure of having it digitally printed instead...because I did promise myself I would make this one totally handmade down to the sewing (yes, after the grueling task of handpainting came the grueling task of handsewing) Luckily i stayed sane til the last fabric though my wrist would tell a different story. Now perhaps you get the picture why it's still the only fabric art available....i may need to find a more efficient and not too labor-intensive way of making the new designs.

However, I did get my happy ending since a lot of these babies found new homes and I only got a few of them left online. Plus I still have a couple more prints stashed away for rainy days.

Stillness: Watercolor Art by Baboo Mondonedo

I have another artist to add up on my "looking-up-to" list. Though I do not purposely limit myself to watercolor, these days i find myself still enthralled with the medium and I don't think I'd tire of it soon. I first came to know about Baboo and her beautiful work when she had a solo exhibit entitled "Stillness" held at Maryknoll Sanctuary last month. As much as I love marveling at works of different artists, I must say that I have longed so much to just drown myself with the beauty of watercolor works by watercolor artists, and the exhibit was just that...a treasure trove of watercolor masterpieces.

Baboo's story on how she got started with watercolor is also very inspiring. She mentioned in one of her interviews for one broadsheet that she never thought she would find herself painting since her hands were, as she puts it "the stiffest." Her "falling-in-love" with the medium was somewhat serendipitous and at the same time fated....a proof that there is indeed no deadline to become a better version of ourselves!

I could only aspire to be as great!

Filling in the Gaps: Exhibits, Feats and the Mundane

Hello blogworld. It's been a while...like really a long while. One of the main reasons I started this blog was to have an avenue for my silly little writing (a close second next to my love for the arts) and i truly miss it now having not written anything for months. My creative pursuit has brought me so much blessings to the detriment of my weak time management skills, not to mention my sanity. Though I must admit that whenever I hit the publish button after finishing a post, I sometimes feel like I'm just throwing my thoughts to a void. But then again you my dear friends would almost always prove me wrong by dropping by and leaving me the loveliest and sweetest comments. So, thank you. Thank you for sticking around even when the blog falls silent every now and then.

Anyway, since it's been ages since my last entry, I thought it would be appropriate to deem this one as a "look back" post. So many interesting things have happened and are still happening and it would be a pity if it's left unshared. From the moment I stated on my 2012 New Year's resolution "do illustrations more...should really give this old love a chance" I've been really doing just that as evident on the evolution of my posts. So expect more work in progress photos here on the blog.

So, to commence my first entry for this year let's look back at some of the highlights of what transpired during my blog absence (not in any particular order):

ONE OF MY POSTCARDS GOT FEATURED IN A NATIONAL MAG!
I know it was just a tiny spot, but it was kind of a big deal for me. And it's Working Mom Mag!!!Another feat checked from my bucket list!

JOINED MY VERY FIRST BAZAAR!
Thanks to a sweet friend who shared her slot, I managed to join the annual Brent Bazaar. I sold my mini artprints and postcards and a few of my hanpainted kitty purses and mini pillows. I was overwhelmed with excitement but went crazy trying to rush the handmade stuff i barely had time to make my booth aesthetically pleasing. Vowed to prepare better for this year.

DID MY ANNUAL HAIR ASSASINATION
Instead of having my usual perm this year, I decided to chop my waves only to have it permed again few months after. The one on the left was taken immediately after the initial curl onslaught, with wispy ends and intact bangs. Yup, finally got tired of them bangs so i decided to grow them back...which is kind of a pain. These days I hide their monstrosity under a hat.

ENJOYED BAGUIO'S FIRST EVER ART IN THE PARK
I was very excited when I heard about Baguio's first art in the park. It is really amazing to see local artists' unique work and talent. My only hope for the next one is for it to be bigger and better advertised. It's a pity that not too many people know about the event.

MY ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIONS ARE NOW AVAILABLE AT MT CLOUD BOOKSHOP AS POSTCARDS AND BOOKPLATES!
When I was asked by Padma, the owner of Mt.Cloud Bookshop if i would like to consign my paper goodies to them, I was more than elated. Mt. Cloud Bookshop is a famous spot both for local and tourists alike for its unique and quirky vibe plus it has this air of the old Baguio you can't help but fall back into. Definitely the kind of place I want my work be part of.

Padayon: Art for a Cause

Before we move on to more good news, let me share what the world most probably have already heard of...how our country, the Philippines have been badly devastated by super typhoon Haiyan and how it affected millions of people. Though my city is located in the northern part of the country and had only experienced some bad gusts of wind, for many weeks I was caught in deep sadness after hearing the plight of so many families in the south.

Several weeks before the onslaught of the typhoon, I was asked by Katha Magazine, a local online magazine to create a piece for auction. All the pieces that were to be auctioned off was meant to benefit another organization but because of recent incidents and the gravity of the damage caused by the calamity, the group decided it best to donate the proceeds to the victims of the typhoon instead.

This online auction was aptly titled "Padayon" (a Visayan word for "carry on"), meant to help not only for immediate relief but also to help their rehabilitation. They gathered local artists and makers to create original pieces to be auctioned off online and all proceeds will go to Haiyan victims. For my part, I have donated this piece and I must say that i have never painted with so much passion welling up in my heart until this one. It is still up for bidding until the 30th of this month.

Projects and opportunities have been keeping me up on my toes the past weeks I neglected to introduce to you the very first set of illustrations I made for the launch of our official shop site. Meet my "Forest Boys and Girls." They are, from left to right; Prince of Birds, Little Kitty Friend, Magical Unicorn Girl and Sweet Little Fawn....my own cute little army of the forest. They are available as mini art prints that could double as postcards. As of the moment, they are running out fast and so if you missed out on buying your favorite I'd make sure they are made available again by December. Also up for sale are my "Avian-themed postcards" inspired by a dear friend who loves, well birds.

Hello, I'm back from the real world!

If you know me well enough as a design blogger, then you may have guessed that I have been quite busy in the real world that finding time to blog became somewhat a nuisance. Hence, the no post for what seemed like an eternity. My plate had been full with all sorts of colorful undertakings, which ironically have rendered this blog into a temporary coma.

As much as I missed blogging and sharing all my adventures in the creative world, I must say that it was nice to take a step back from the world wide web and take a breather once in a while. I had the chance to really focus on work, the old school way without the constant buzzing of all things techie breathing down my neck. Anyway, here's a few glimpses of what transpired in my longest record of blog absence:

Facebook Page Makeover

My facebook page had been screaming for a much-needed makeover. My absence was mainly spent on reorganizing and re-conceptualizing my little nook of an online indie shop to make way for my illustrations. Last year part of my resolution was to rekindle an old passion; art has always been my first love and thought it was only appropriate for me to merge that with my love for handmade. And I am excited to announce that this little lovechild between handmade and art would all be available in my very own official shop site which i would be launching really really soon!

I made it to the top 20 of the Freeway Art Bag Competition

I couldn't be more elated when I was informed that I made it to the top 20 of the FREEWAY art bag competition. Out of more than 200 entries, one of my two paintings was chosen for the final 20 cut. It was, in some way, some sort of affirmation that I did the right choice to follow my heart even if it meant uncertainties and facing unknown challenges. The artwork above was the first painting I did in over a decade, which made the whole accolade a lot more special. Thank you to all the people who supported me on the competition, your words of encouragement meant so much.

Fashion Illustration for Stacia Pierce

When I was asked to do an illustration for Stacia Pierce, I turned into a hodgepodge of different happy emotions. Excited, thrilled, ecstatic but nervous at the same time. I felt honored to be trusted enough to do a fashion illustration for such an inspirational figure to a lot of women.

There are a few more projects that I am also super excited to share but I would leave that hanging for now. Til next.

Tutorial: Vintage-inspired decorated bottles

As promised, here is the tutorial for the deco bottles I mentioned yesterday. The rub-on stickers pack comes with how to's printed on the back but for the love of me, it didn't make any sense. I was left to rely on my craft instincts instead. In other words, I decided to just wing it!

How tos:

1) cut the image and peel off the paper backing

2) with the right side facing you, rub the image to the bottle using the stick that came with the pack or any hard object, strong enough to transfer the image.

3) gently peel off the lamination.

4) finish it by brushing acrylic medium or any clear lacquer to prevent any peeling in the future.

Craft Loot: Crafters can never have one too many of them pretty little things

Bought these pretties last mall sale and before heading to the cashier, I made myself promise that I would use these and actually make something out of it, lest they'd be left dusting in a sad sad little corner. I needn't rack my brain too hard trying to justify my purchase because as soon as I set my eyes on them pretty rub-on stickos, I've already got a clear vision on how and to what to use them for. Of course, I had to get myself those pretty deco tapes too especially because they only cost 29pesos a piece. My crafty heart couldn't stop fluttering.

Would be posting a tutorial on how to make these pretty decorated bottles (washable and long-lasting) using the rub-on stickers. Do come back tomorrow alright?!

Fieldguided: BenCab Museum x Cafe Sabel

Nothing lifts the downtrodden spirit more than filling one's heart with so much inspiration enough to pull oneself from a depressing state. Not that I'm currently on that state but lets just say for weeks now I was still coming to terms with the fact that somebody just let me down big time. It's complicated and I'd rather talk about good things here so why don't we just go over our recent trip when I dragged my two beloved boys to the museum.

You've probably heard of Benedicto Reyes Cabrera better known as Bencab. If you haven't, I suggest you go out of that cave you're living in once in a while. He just happened to be awarded as National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts.

You'd be welcomed by amazing artworks in the lobby and would be handed out a museum guide with a map of the place. The exhibits are grouped into different categories and rooms. They are contemporary arts, the Cordilleras, the Erotica, the Print gallery and Bencab's work himself.

Cafe Sabel is Bencab Museum's quaint little restaurant at the lowest level of the building. It also opens to the farm garden and an amazing view of a little lake and tree-filled wonder which is located at the back of the museum.

The whole trip, however short it was, was enough to resuscitate me from my temporary emotional coma and the person...people responsible for that are now nothing but bad memories and will no longer have business being in my life. Sometimes we need to chuck people out of our system to avoid getting poisoned ourselves.

So if you get to visit Baguio and you're all done with your strawberry-picking or vegetable-buying, why don't you pay Bencab Museum a visit.

Trust me, it's exhilarating!

{Day 9} Something Vintage: Children's Book-inspired Illustration

How appropriate is it that the whole time I was drawing today's challenge, my neighbor decided to play Louis Armstrong's record? Now we got this vintage vibe going on around the house. I feel like putting on my red red lippy and 2 inch shoes and dance the rest of the afternoon away. That would be quite a scene.

{Day 8} Nature-Inspired: Botanical Illustration

Being a green thumb wannabe, I have always had this soft spot for botanical illustrations. If I could have it my way, our house would have already turned into one big botanical gallery by now. I love collecting them too, I mean the real thing. Whenever the fam and I get the chance to go overseas, I make sure to schedule a day of relaxed stroll in the park or mountainside just so I could get my hands on them pretty flowers and foliage. An ultimate favorite would be ginkgo leaves. I love how they turn golden in autumn.

How about taking a walk somewhere this weekend?

Balcony Gardening

In between drawing and crafting/sewing (yup am back doing some projects at the moment), I had a bit of time attending to my little indoor garden and thought I could give you a few glimpses of it. Admittedly I am not one very good gardener, not yet at least. But with practice and lots of love, I'm sure i'd get there somehow. It still has a long way to go, but as I have mentioned on my Instagram, I am most determined to have my own little forest by the end of the year. For now it houses my geraniums, some spiders, succulents and ivies. Can't wait to add big ones in the coming months. For the mean time I'd be practicing on my nurturing prowess. For advice and suggestions from green thumbs out there, you are most welcomed to give them here and I thank you in advance. Ciao bellas!

{Day 6}Something Involving Water

Yes, I am posting two days of my Drawing Challenge today. I unintentionally skipped some days because of the busy holiday weekend here in Baguio. Unlike other cities, we get busier on holiday seasons because tons of tourists, both local and foreign flock to the city. As for us, well we got stuck somewhere. Blame it on the absence of a parking space.

Anyway, day 6 requires a drawing that involves water. It is obvious indeed that i made this one the same day as my previous one because they look like they're part of the same series. I titled this one "Granmamare" the mother of Ponyo of Miyazaki's animated movie of the same title.

Now let me excuse meself as I rack my brain for the day7 Drawing Challenge. Til next!

{Day 5} Fashion Illustration

{Day 4} Favorite piece of clothing

Knitted cardigans no doubt.

I own about a couple of this and probably more than the total number of my footwear. The most recent fave is this gray-black number from Terranova. That leather elbow patch just made it too adorable to resist, not to mention the 75% off from the original price. Sweeet!!!

What do you think of this cutesy little thing for the 4th day of my drawing challenge? I just realized that I used different mediums for every challenge day....this one's watercolor pens with a touch of digital editing and collage. I wonder what I'd be using tomorrow? Any suggestions?

{Day 3} Draw an object in the room

Chances are that you are most likely to find me inside the kitchen or the dining room. So it is no surprise that what I came up with for the day three challenge is a treat for the palate. Today I was seriously craving for peanut butter and since the lighting in the dining area was the brightest in the house, I decided to draw there too.....of course what else but the peanut butter i was happily gobbling up.

The colors of the drawing did look a bit weird. Blame my being stubborn. I was determined to use only sharpies, pens and markers only to realize in the end that I don't have the right hues. My point quite obvious with that neon yellow and that uber dark brown that made it look more like Nutella in a PeterPan peanut butter jar.....teheeh!

The photo above may disagree.....with that nonchalant, poker-face look I was donning

but I was seriously seriously enjoying my peanut butter fix!

Now let me get back to scooping yet another one.

{Day 2} Draw an Animal

Obviously, I'm trying to make up for my day one blunder by posting not one, but three drawings. After being torn between a forest deer or a cute bunny, I decided, since it is also Easter to do the latter instead. I sat on my workdesk not exactly knowing how to begin and by mid-morning I was already done with Peter Rabbit's rough sketch. I've heard somewhere that before you become your own self in the art world, you must first try to imitate the great artists before your time.

I love Beatrix Potter. Her beautiful illustrations are subtle, whimsical and I love love the way her colors blend. But aside from that I also somehow feel kindred with her taste for the pastoral. I love animals dressed in human clothes prancing around glorious farms and breathtaking meadows. I guess that's prolly the reason this challenge turned out pretty well, I truly enjoyed the whole thing. If there's one thing I could have done differently though, that would be using a watercolor paper instead of a regular drawing paper. It could have had better texture that way. I wasn't actually thinking of doing it in full color but hey, it turned out well in the end anyway.

Below are some quick drawings I did in the past. You might think I sort of cheated by drawing another person's original artwork so I added two of my quick drawings. Now that day2 is out of the way, I think I deserve a cup of good ol' coffee. Hope to see your artworks soon guys!

{Day 1 of 30 Days Drawing Challenge} Draw yourself

Ok I admit, I got off on the wrong foot with my 30 days drawing challenge. I did promise to kick it off Monday, which was yesterday and here I am a day late. Not to sound like I'm making excuses but for some reason I was so sure it was only Saturday when it was actually Sunday already. This losing-track-of-days-thing often happens when the kid is on his term break. My body clock automatically shuts off as if it too was on a break.

Anyway, here's what I came up with for the first challenge. At first, I wasn't really very sure on how to go about it so I sort of just went with the wind.The whole time I used the 2B pencil because I haven't gotten used to the softer 4B and 6B. Plus of course my trusty kneaded eraser.
