Healthcare and information technology has evolved significantly over the past few decades. While many people associate technology with solid state electronics, there are many ways that the life sciences has benefitted the development of computers and other information systems. In many cases, a biological contract research organisation can spur the development of new technologies. One of the best examples of computers influencing tech is with computers.

Traditional computer systems are based off of silicon transistors and vacuum tubes. While these systems are commonly used in most computers, there are now several new types of computing systems that can be powered by biological systems.

One of the most interesting new types of computers is powered by protein folding and genes. Using specialized genetically modified proteins, it’s possible for these computers to do basic computations. While current systems are significantly slower than transistor-based computers, they offer several significant advantages. With a biological computer, it’s possible to do an unlimited number of concurrent calculations. A very high level of multitasking can yield performance that is better than the best silicon-based computers available today.

In addition, biological computers can be an excellent way to reduce manufacturing costs. It can take years to build a processor fabrication facility. While computers are dropping in price every year, they are still very expensive to build. With a biological computer, building a new computer could be as simple as growing a plant in a garden. Since a new computer can grow using micro-organisms, the cost of a traditional computer could decrease dramatically.

It’s also possible to store more information on a biological computer than a silicon-based computer. For example, most silicon-based computers use magnetic charges to store information on hard drives. While this can be an effective strategy, there is a limit to how much data can be stored in a discrete space. In addition, manufacturing costs can increase significantly as storage capacity increases.

With a biological computer, data can be coded in DNA or RNA. By storing data in these forms, it’s possible to store a very large amount of data in a small space. In addition, these systems are immune to electrical and magnetic interference – something that can cause a traditional computer to crash.

Most biological computers available today can only do very basic calculations like adding and subtracting. While these systems only have limited value at the current time, it’s important to remember the limitations of silicone-based computers less than 50 years ago. Biological computing will revolutionize the world, and it may just be a few short years when we start to see these computers on a grander scale.

Providence’s NBC 10 took an identity theft expert to the streets to show consumers how easy it is. He slipped an RFID card scanner (you can find them on eBay for as little as 50 bucks) into an iPad case and went to town. Here is the video.

Pretty scary isn’t it? I think I will stick to normal cards as opposed to RFID.

With the new release  it’s easy to let Sopcast open with VLC. Very helpfull when you want to watch some specific high bitrate channels which only work with VLC. You only have to setup this once and you can use it all the time.

How to do?

• Make sure to have the latest Sopcast
• Install VLC

Open Sopcast, and go to Options (at the bottom –> Option)

• Choose the external player
• Use my Own Media Player
• Select there VLC.exe (tip: search for VLC on your pc –> in the folder/map there you can select the VLC icon)
• Standard is C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

Accept this, and restart Sopcast. Yet you can easy open it in the external VLC player. Start a channel, wait untill it has buffered > 30%, and then select the below button;

Now it will open in VLC and you can see the channel normally. This can be done everytime you don’t get a picture or you get a weird screen. Keep the trick in mind as you can need it quite a few times.

Or, Open VLC –> Open Network stream –> Http –> 127.0.0.1:8902 and press ok. But sopcast and a channel should be running first (as usual)

Not running smooth or you got issues?

The following may help the smoothness of your stream in VLC

• Open VLC
• From the VLC Menu select Tools
• From the drop down menu select Preferences
• From the menu on the left side select Video
• In the display section uncheck the following two options:
• Advanced Video Output (Overlay)
• Use Hardware YUV->RGB Conversions
• When they are unchecked, click Save.
• Then close and restart VLC.
