Part of my goal in 2014 is to find more balance, and part of that means placing an effort on taking better care of myself. Things like a better sleep schedule, a better daily routine, making time to eat better throughout the day and having the ability to step away from the computer to get in a quick workout. This past year I found that I was at my best when I would toss on my workout clothes and go for a quick run. Outside. But the winter months don’t allow for me to do that, and I find myself spending more time on the computer and snacking than getting active. Not a great combo.

We purchased a treadmill years ago, and it is something you don’t see make an appearance on the blog all that often because 1) it doesn’t get used as much as it should and 2) it is ugly.

This little update sure put a fire in me to want to run inside and make better use of that little corner of ours. I always say I feel more productive in a neat and orderly environment, and this is definitely no exception to that rule.

As far as a routine goes, I sort of just do what I have time for and what I feel like I want to focus on for the day. My goal is 15-30 minutes of some sort of exercise Monday – Friday, just to break up the hours of sitting I do on the computer, but any tips and suggestions from those of you who have mastered this already would be sincerely appreciated.

Dealing with younger children is hard work and takes a lot of patience, especially when it comes to getting them to eat their food. When they flat out refuse to eat, you have a bit of a dilemma on your hands – you want them to have all the necessary nutrition so that they can grow and stay healthy, but on the other hand you don’t want force food down their throat if they aren’t hungry. In fact, having them eat a lot of food constantly is a fast lane to obesity and this is definitely not something that you want. You should definitely avoid:

• Giving your kids sugary snacks in between meals
• Letting your kids drink a lot of juice/soda right before a meal
• Using food as a reward or bargaining chip
• Developing an association between food and emotions
• Letting your child’s temper tantrums go unpunished

These habits can be detrimental to developing a healthy diet and your child will be stuck eating only junk food. If you are looking to develop some good habits that will make your kids less picky, then read on.

Run a tight meal schedule
Three solid meals a day and a couple of small snacks here and there will get the job done, just make sure that both you and the children know that the family eats at a certain time. The kids can run around and play between meals, but don’t give them any food until a set meal time. This way they actually get hungry and are ready to devour almost anything that you offer them. Making your kids less picky is pretty easy when they want to eat something quick.

Let your child help you out in the kitchen

Making the child feel like an integral part of the family instead of a little dictator is very important. They need to know that you are not there for their amusement and to satisfy their every whim, but that they are expected to contribute as well. This helps in several ways – it can raise your child’s self-respect, tire them out and make them hungry and familiarize them with the cooking process so that they feel less reluctant to try new things.

Each and every day when my little ones hop off of the bus and come running in through the front door, they take off all their gear and give their mama some major hugs! That’s my favorite part. And then they take out piles and piles of paperwork. Piles. And more piles. It’s like crazy amounts of papers each and every day.

Tackling these piles can quickly get overwhelming, since it seems never ending. And if they don’t get dealt with, the piles can create mass chaos…. I know, I have been there!

We typically go through all of their work, and file all the necessities in their personal bins.

This is always our “go to” place for all things related to the kid’s schooling and activities. However, to ensure the bin doesn’t overflow with all the papers I can’t part with, I had created this binder system to house all my favs.

I tend to hold on to all their important tests, report cards, paperwork showing milestones being made, etc… and it ended up being more than I originally planned for. And that’s ok. It is always one of my favorite ways to go down memory lane with the little ones… they really get a kick out of looking at their older papers as well. So instead of pairing down even more, which tends to be my first reaction, I decided I needed a new storage approach. One that will be manageable as they continue to learn and grow, yet is easy to maintain.

So I snagged three file boxes. You can get them anywhere, office supply stores, Target and Walmart, Amazon… They come in so many shapes and sizes and colors!

I just pop the cover on and stow away on a nearby shelf. Making this a really easy system to maintain. Oh imagine the giddiness!!

School paperwork is always a hot topic that I have gotten oodles of emails about, so if there are any other storage ideas or solutions that are working well for you, we would all heart to know!

I knew I had more supplies than what an over the door organizer could accommodate; I also knew I may want to remove the closet door all together someday. I also wanted to keep the wrapping supplies in my studio, which is where I work, craft, project and pretty much spend every last waking second. Lastly, I wanted to set up a station that could potentially transform into a packaging station for my shop someday, if/when I get to that point. Occasionally I ship things and keep shipping envelopes and packaging materials on hand, therefore, it only makes sense that these items live here as well. I was longing for the wrapping paper to be stored in an easy to access way, which would allow for it to stay nice and neat in-between uses. Oh! And my ribbon collection also. I had tried one of those sweet ribbon boxes, and was even planning on DIY’ing a few more, but I ultimately decided that there was a better, space saving solution.

There are things that our children should have so they can lead a rich and fulfilling life. Sure, if we wanted them just to survive, to just get by, they could do so. But that’s not living. We want our children to go out and have experiences that turn them into better people.

While a well-rounded education is important, these 13 things below are also necessary. You might think they are common knowledge or not even a big deal, but it would surprise you how many kids are growing up to become “adults” still dependent on their parents, teachers, and co-workers, amongst others.

Our children aren’t going to turn 18 and magically turn into responsible, capable adults. We need to do our best to equip our children with the knowledge and skills they need to go out into the real world and have a successful, rewarding life. It’s best to start teaching them these things when they are young. That way, they grow up with this knowledge and can better understand the importance of it.

In addition to a sound education, things your child needs include a basic knowledge and understanding of:

Finances
Money is extremely important. Teach your children how to budget, how to save and how respect things that you bought for them or they bought for themselves. They need to know that swiping a card means money is being transferred. Teach them how to be responsible with credit cards and how to stay out of debt.

Politics
Does your 3-year-old really need to be able to explain to you the reasoning and history behind a checks and balance system? No. Could a 3-year-old see a picture of the U.S. President and be able to identify him? Of course. They might not be mature enough to understand what it means to be president of a country, but they can know who their leaders are.

Show your children the importance of being active in your community politics by participating yourself. Talk to them about when you go and vote. Tell them who you voted for and why. Discuss these things with them and prepare them to take an active role in the community themselves.

A Sense of Self-worth
So many children today are suffering from a lack of self-esteem. Your home should be a place of comfort and peace. Let your children know they are important, that they are special. Find ways to help build their self-esteem; compliment them, point out their good attributes, support them and be there when they need help.

Tie-Dye Clothing

For this activity you will need clothing dye, freshly washed and dried t-shirts, rubber gloves, a large washing up bowl or bucket, and elastic bands or string.

Use the elastic bands or string to fold, knot, and tie the clothing item: the way it is tied determines which parts will be exposed to the dye and coloured. Wearing the rubber gloves, mix up the dye with water according to the dye manufacturer’s instructions and submerge the clothing item for the recommended amount of time. Remove the item and allow it to dry for 24 hours, and then wash. Once finished you’ll have a very lively piece of clothing!

Play Some Retro Games

Classics such as Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit are still great fun to play and promote intelligent thinking, whilst games such as Jenga can provide fun shocks, and Twister will have everyone in hysterics. These games are also useful in promoting social interaction and communication, so dust off your old versions and get playing!

Hi everyone! It’s Jill from the Rozy Home! I, too, am a remodelaholic. For the last three years I have been working non-stop on my home. Last year I spent a large amount of time, effort and, yes, money, on my foyer. After all, the foyer is the first thing you see when you enter a home. After adding board and batten (and then converting it to picture frame moulding) I decided that I needed to do something about my poor, naked windows.

For the arches, I had to nail the trim on. The angles/bending made it impossible to glue on. After a day of letting the glue dry completely, I began working on the corner of the arches. For this, I grabbed some old moulding I had in the garage and created a cornice-type piece.

Although I loved the look, the exterior side felt a little unbalanced. My solution? Head back to Lowe’s where I purchased more EverTrue, but this time I bought lattice. I glued it on the exterior edge of the trim and that did it. The trim was balanced!

As far as the cost… The EverTrue trim was around $2.50 per 10 foot piece and I used about 30 pieces (for doors at window). The lattice was $5.00 per 10 foot piece and I used 10 – 15. If memory serves, the total cost was a little over $100. Not bad for trimming out 5 windows and two doors in a room with 15 foot ceilings!
