We're going to be dating," is what Jarret tells his clients when they first meet. He wants them to understand that interior design is a process, and in order for it to be successful and feel organic, it has to be created over time. Jarret, an interior designer, took one year to transform Sarah and Dan's rental apartment into their home.

It’s almost a year ago when we moved in our apartment and we are pretty much settled. When we had to choose for furniture it was a hell of a job, because my love and I have a very different taste. A few years ago I found new interest in decorating and I was hooked on country-style, rustic furniture. But my love is more into the modern style. So I had to find a way to make these two styles work together.

Jeanine, also known as the voice behind Aphrochic, has been bringing her blend of "modern style with soul" to the blogosphere for years. We've been intrigued with the occasional shots of her house that have been featured on the blog, so it was with pleasure that we headed over to North Beach to meet Jeanine and tour her home.

Budget solutions like a near-free steel bucket sink compliment a nearby steel pipe framed bed, blending an industrial chic veneer with modernist solutions: sliding bathroom wall and a flush-mounted LCD television invisibly set within a large mirror wall. Despite the small space, Rajiv has managed to even incorporate a miniature art gallery with intention of letting elements of it to rust!

One most common one is that, why should you buy a new one when the old furniture at the bargain spot is really still good to be displayed and used around the house? So we conclude that the decisions of buying second hand furniture are rustic furniture/antique as it gets old and money saver although they have a lot of money in their pocket.

The first thing you need to know before buying the furniture is decide the style of the furniture that you want to buy along with the dimension. Why is this so important? It is because you don’t want to buy furniture where the dimension won’t fit at your house.

Second things is to examine the furniture, you can do this by interrogating the seller and there are several questions you need to ask, such as; the kind of wood being used, whether the wood used is old and dry enough (because if the wood used isn’t old or mature, then you will get sort of wood crumbs in a short mean time and then you need to say goodbye to your furniture). The next one is you can knock on every part of the furniture whether it’s hollow or not. And don’t buy a hollow one because termites might have eaten the inner part of that furniture. Make sure the construction of supporting it is strong.

Try it out. It’s important to try it out before you buy. Unlike a new furniture, you need to make sure the strength, durability and worth the money can buy. If it is a cabinet you can open the drawers and carefully look thoroughly at inside of it. If it is a chair then you can sit on it to see how comfy or strong it is and lean on tables. When you found that the furniture isn’t at a good shape make sure that before you buy it you are able to fix it or get someone to fix it for you and pay for that condition of the items you’re buying.

If you aim to buy a knock down furniture or self assembled furniture then you’ve to be extra careful as you need to check it as the joint sometimes isn’t as strong as it uses to be.

Finally once you’ve decided to buy the second hand wooden furniture that you desire then you can always do a complete remake over by refurnishing it again or if you like you can add more motifs by asking a good carpenter to help you out. My friend emailed me over the weekend, "Fran, I fell down the stairs yesterday and I can't get up!" Ha..(a running joke between the two of us). In all seriousness, though, she did fall slightly (thank goodness she is okay and that she wasn't holding her baby), but said she was in desperate need of a stair runner and didn't know where to begin. Could I help?

Runners are practical and stylish additions to any staircase. Before selecting one though, you want to consider your other area rugs or carpets that are in view of the staircase and make sure the runner will coordinate (not match) with them.

A runner should be wide enough to cover most of the main section of the stair, leaving about 3 inches on each side (from edge of runner to wall or baluster).

Choose a flat weave carpet rather than a cut-pile or plush carpet. They install better.

Dark patterned runners are more forgiving and will hide a lot especially if you have kids and dogs. But, a light to medium tone is always a classic choice.

One of the most stylish and affordable rug companies I know is Dash and Albert and is always a good place to start.
