Joanna, Heather & Elizabeth

Have you heard of Rhode Explorers yet?!  Rhode Explorers is a club for women in Rhode Island that gives us an opportunity to explore our home here in New England!  It was started by Joanna, Elizabeth & myself with 3 principles in mind: Adventure, Service & Knowledge.

If you read my Bio on the About Us page, I have been CEO of my household since I had my first daughter in July 2009!  Ok, I kid about the CEO part… ;)  But I have been a stay at home Mom for the past 5.5 years, keeping my husband & 2 daughters alive & well.  I love having the opportunity to be there for all the milestones, for the potty training, for the bike riding, for the play dates, field trips & everything in between!  Believe me I do!  There are those times that I sit down for a few minutes & think about having a little something for me.  You know what I mean?  Something more substantial than a hair cut or mani/pedi, even though we all need those from time to time too!  Whether you are a Mom & Wife, a Wife, a working Mom or Wife, a stay at home Mom or Wife, Single & working…we women ALL need something that is just for us.  For me, that something is Rhode Explorers!

The idea behind Rhode Explorers is getting a group of women together regularly to take on new adventures you may not want to do on your own or learn a new skill or contribute to our community through service.  We want to enrich your lives one event at at time!  Take time out from your busy life to meet new friends, try new things & just have that something for yourself.  I’m looking forward to having an event to go to every month or every other month, knowing that I will have fun, meet new women & hopefully reconnect with women from past events!  Maybe, just maybe Rhode Explorers can help us get closer to the ever elusive life balance that most women strive for, by giving us an hour to recharge, relax, learn & have fun!

Our 1st event, at Raffa Yoga, has already sold out!  Stay tuned to our events page for the March event!

Do you have an adventure, class or anything that you’ve always wanted to do, but didn’t want to go by yourself or couldn’t get a group of friends interested?!  Contact us & maybe we will pick your idea for a future event!

Head over to Rhode Explorers to read more, Joanna wrote “Why we started Rhode Explorers” & Elizabeth wrote “Why become a Rhode Explorer“!

Happy New Year

Here is a look back at 2012, 2013

New Year’s Quiz 2014 Edition!

1. What did you do in 2014 that you’d never done before?

Spent a week on Block Island this Summer & loved it!  Ava was able to ski on her own a few weeks ago, I was able to ski with her instead of using the harness!

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Same as last year…  I will try to make healthier food choices for myself & my family!  Commit to going to CrossFit at least 4, hopefully 5 times a week!  Work harder at finding the ever elusive life balance!  New this year….  Try to become a runner! ;) I want work up to running 3-4 miles a couple of times a week!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Yes!  I had 4 friends have babies in 2014!  3 boys & 1 girl!

4. Did anyone close to you die?

No, thank God!

5. What countries did you visit?

Stayed in the USA!

6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?

Be more consistent with healthy habits…meal prep, eating well & clean, going to bed earlier, life balance…  Household organization!

7. What dates from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

Ava had a few 1st’s this year that I will always remember….  She learned to swim with no swimmies, ride a bike with training wheels, pump her legs & swing without pushes, had her 1st day of Kindergarten, skied on her own!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Losing some weight, making gains at CrossFit, continuing to raise my 2 daughters from babies into the greatest little girls!

9. What was your biggest failure?

Feel like I fail at keeping my house organized & just too much clutter.  That is going to change!

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

I fractured ankle in June.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Smart TV, new skis for Ava, new laptop

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Same people as last year…  My husband…he is supportive of everything I do, he is always there for me with a hug, kiss, laugh, smile or shoulder to cry on, he loves me with all his heart!  My daughters…although not always perfectly behaved, they are polite, kind, always full of love & laughter!

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

I’ve always felt like I can’t let other people bring me down.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Same as last year…house, kids, car, vacations…

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Something I still can’t talk about, a tease I know, but can’t say anything yet.  This is the same as last year too!  Maybe something on the horizon…

16. What song will always remind you of 2014?

Same as last year…  I love music, especially country…but usually listen to XM Radio in the car or iHeart Radio at home…nothing specific comes to mind.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

a) happier or sadder?  I’m happier!
b) thinner or fatter?  Thinner!
c) richer or poorer?  I would say…same.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Same as last year…  Stayed more organized about household tasks, worked out more, meal planning, eating healthy & blogging.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Same as last year…  Less worry & anxiety!

20. How did you spend Christmas?

Same as last year…our yearly traditions!  We went to my sister-in-law’s house on Christmas Eve & we hosted my side of the family on Christmas Day.

21. Did you fall in love in 2014?

This will always be the same every year!  Yes, I fell MORE in love with my husband, Ava & Sophie!

22. What was your favorite TV program?

A few…Bones, Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Elementary, SOA, Nashville…usually watched on the DVR after the kids are in bed!

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

No, hate is a strong word & I never plan on using it.

24. What was the best book you read?

Same as last year…  I read WAY too many to write down!  Reading is my vice…a good vice…but sometimes I’m up until 2am just because I can’t put a book (kindle app on my iPad!) down!

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Nashville soundtracks

26. What did you want and get?

Good health for my family!

27. What did you want and not get?

Same as last year…  World Peace, a cure to ALL sickness, win the lottery & an end to poverty…

28. What was your favorite film of this year?

I watched lots of movies this year, most on Netflix…only a couple in the theaters.  I couldn’t pick just one…

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 35 in 2014!  My husband & I took the girls to NYC for their 1st trip!  We went to the American Girl store, to see the Rockettes & a carriage ride through Central Park!

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

If I had stuck to healthier eating & lost more weight!

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014?

Mostly gym clothes during the week, with some jeans, sweaters, T’s, sundresses, shorts, skirts (depending on the season) on weekends!

32. What kept you sane?

Same as last year…  God, my family & friends.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Same as last year…  Not really anyone in particular.  I do like keeping up with them all in my US Weekly subscription!  Guilty pleasure…

34. What political issue stirred you the most?

I do not really keep up with political issues.

35. Who did you miss?

This will always be the same!  My Dad.  I miss him everyday.

36. Who was the best new person you met?

My friend Elizabeth!

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014.

This is the same as last year…  Living a more Thankful life can lead to living a happier life & a life filled with LESS worry & anxiety.  Try not to worry about the things you have no control over & only worry about the things that you do have control over.  This lesson helped me through my cancer diagnosis & all that went along with that.  I also learned to plan for the future but live for everyday.

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

I’m drawing a blank…..

Wishing you all a very Happy, healthy New Year filled with love, laughter, happiness, family, friends & dreams that come true!  Cheers to an awesome 2015!

I am Super Excited to tell you that I am now a Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador!!!

girlsgonesporty-ambassador-badge

This came at the perfect time for me!  The Summer was tough fitness wise for me.  I fractured my ankle in mid-June, which meant basically no working out for 3-4 weeks, then modified workouts for another 3-4 weeks.  By the end of August I was beyond ready to re-commit to my fitness journey.  Being a Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador is great inspiration to get out there & get moving, whether it is a hike, a run, a CrossFit workout or simply running around with my kids!

Along with my fitness, we’ve started, as a family, to eat & cook clean!  With my husband on board, this has been a lot easier!  I’m the one that goes grocery shopping, does the meal planning & most of the cooking, the responsibility falls to me to makes sure my family is healthy.  This proves to be a bigger task some weeks & easier other weeks.  But life is a work in progress, right?! ;)  One thing that makes this all easier for me is planning!  I plan a bigger dinner, so that I can pack leftovers for lunch or even breakfast if it works out!  I also try to have some staples on hand at all times…hard boiled eggs, eggs, cooked veggies, frozen wild caught shrimp, cooked/uncooked nitrate free bacon & deli meat, salad makings & fresh fruit.  I can usually pull together breakfast, lunch or dinner on the fly with a mix of these items!

What does all this mean for you?!  I will be sharing more of my fitness, clean eating, lifestyle changes with you!  Make sure to follow me on Twitter at @HWifeHeather & Instagram at @HWifeHeather, I will post daily updates, pics, tips & my workouts!  Let’s connect soon!

mus·ing ~ myo͞oziNG ~ noun ~ plural noun: musings
  1. a period of reflection or thought.  “his musings were interrupted by the sound of the telephone”

synonyms: meditationthinkingcontemplationdeliberation, pondering, reflection,rumination, introspection,

daydreaming, reverie, dreaming, preoccupation,broodingformal cogitation.

“in my musing of late, I have decided that I need more purpose in my life”

Now that you know what MUSING means….  Here are my Random Musings, in no particular order…
  1. It is September 25th, where did the Summer go?!
  2. Same train of thought…. We needed coats today!
  3. How is it possible that my “baby” is in Kindergarten?!  Seriously?!
  4. My CrockPot has become a workhorse in my kitchen lately!  Helps me get a healthy & delicious dinner on the table in a timely fashion!
  5. I’m loving our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)!  It has been a challenge some weeks to use all the veggies…  When in doubt or simply out of time, I chop ‘em & put ‘em all in the crockpot with some spices & hope for the best!  Every time I’ve done this, we’ve gotten the best!
  6. I kind of love the more scheduled life we have because of my daughter being in kindergarten!
  7. Same train of thought…  Makes me realize how much time was wasted this Summer without a schedule.  Live & learn!
  8. Kindergarten is tough for spontaneous long weekend travelers like us!  No more Mondays & Fridays off, or at least not too many!
  9. SOOOOO very happy to be mostly healed after my ankle fraction in mid June.  Finally at the gym with no ankle brace, which means while I am strengthening my ankle, it has been a little sore.
  10. I’m loving the Whole Life Challenge that we are doing!  8 weeks of clean eating, exercising, mobility, water intake, supplements & lifestyle changes started on September 13th!
  11. I darkened my hair with low lights yesterday….a sure sign of Fall!
  12. Start of Fall, but I already signed the girls up for ski lessons!  I can’t wait for Winter & skiing!
  13. This will be our 1st year with all 4 of us skiing together!  I can’t believe we are already at that point with our family!
  14. Still dealing with the fall out of my cancer/hysterectomy…not in a physical way but rather an emotional way…  I REALLY wanted to add to our family, in fact we were trying to get pregnant when I was diagnosed, so that for me has been the hardest to accept.
  15. If anyone happens to see a stork flying around with a baby, please send them our way! ;)  Seriously!!

Ok, are you sick of my Musings yet?!  I will give you a break at this point! ;)  I think this may become a more regular post, I had fun sharing all of these with you!

Leave me a comment & share some of your musings with me!

Google Map of Block IslandDid you know that there is a little island (9.734 sq mi) 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island?!  Well, there is, Block Island!  It is a quick ferry boat ride away!  How many locals do you think go out there?!  Maybe for vacation or even a day?!  Probably not as many as you would think.  Kind of along the idea that it is there & you know it is there but you don’t go & visit because so many other things fill up your days when you are at home.  Next time you have a free day, weekend or just a couple days…take a trip to Block Island!  Local Rhode Islander or tourist, there is plenty to enjoy on this little piece of paradise off the Rhode Island coast!  We went out for a week this Summer & rented a house with friends, we went the week of 4th of July!  We had a great time on Block Island & so can you!

For the price of a ferry ride you can be on Block Island in 30 minutes aboard the Fast Ferry or 55 minutes aboard the Traditional (car) Ferry.  Ferries leave from Pt. Judith, Newport, RI & Fall River, MA.  Prices range from $23.65 roundtrip for adults to $96 Full Size SUV roundtrip, kids under 5 are free & kids 5-11 are $12.70  roundtrip.

Now you are on Block Island….  What to do, what to do?!  Here our Top 10…where we ate, what we did  & what we saw while we were there!

  1. Spring House is a hotel & restaurant with a slopping lawn & beautiful view of the ocean & Old Harbor.  We ate here twice, both times for lunch.  All the food we tried was superb!  I loved the shrimp tacos, my husband loved the lobster roll & the girls enjoyed fish & chips & linguine & clams!  If you go, you’ve got to try the Peanut Butter Banana Mudslide….so AWESOME!  There on adirondack chairs set up on the lawn, we sat & had a drink while the kids played on the lawn…perfect for some adult time while the kids are playing!
  2. Beachead is a restaurant near Fred Benson Town Beach (formerly known as the State Beach), on Corn Neck Rd.  We went here 3 times for lunch!  Seriously, that good!  We would head to the beach, then stop at Beachead for lunch before putting the girls down for nap!  The seafood nachos were our favorite nachos ever!  Nacho chips with crab, shrimp & scallops piled on top with a special sauce & a little seaweed salad!  Even the girls loved the nachos, Ava tried scallops for the 1st time & loves to eat them now!  The mudslides are also really good!  Notice a pattern here…?! ;)
  3. Payne’s Donuts located on Payne’s Dock & has THE BEST donuts!  The donuts are called Killer Donuts & that they are!  The donuts come in 3 flavors: plain, sugar or cinnamon sugar.  These donuts are KILLER!  I think one reason is the donuts are served warm, which would make anything taste better!  The coffee is really good too!  This was a to go breakfast twice while we were on Block Island!
  4. Bethany’s Airport Diner is a restaurant located in the airport!  This was the kids favorite breakfast spot!  We got to enjoy a wonderful breakfast while watching the planes land & take off!  Food & entertainment in one!
  5. Aldo’s Bakery was our ice cream spot!  Aldo’s has fresh baked goods, homemade ice cream & a breakfast buffet!
  6. Fred Benson Beach, also known as the State Beach is where we went!  There were bathrooms & a snack bar along with rentals for chairs, umbrellas & boogie boards!  This beach is 1 of 2 that have on duty lifeguards too, the other beach with lifeguards is Ballards.
  7. North Lighthouse, which was built in 1867, can be found at Sandy Point on the northern tip of Block Island.  We took a walk along the beach to check out the lighthouse & surrounding dunes.  We also walked to the beach & saw a cool wood hut someone had built, the kids had fun playing in & around it!  Would be fun to pack a lunch to go along with the walk, collect seashells & drift wood, there is no swimming at this beach due to the rip tide.
  8. Southeast Lighthouse & Mohegan Bluffs are very close to where the house we rented was located.  The lighthouse was built in 1875 & is still in use to this day, although it was moved 300 feet back from the bluffs in 1993 due to cliff erosion.  There is a steep stairway comprised of over 100 stairs down the Mohegan Bluffs to the beach below.  The cliffs measure about 150 feet tall in some places!  Because our house was near by we walked down a hiking trail to get to the beach below instead of the stairs.
  9. Justin’s Farm is a petting zoo with exotic & domestic animals for the kids to see & feed!  It is located between Spring Street & High Street.
  10. Shopping, shopping & more shopping!  There are all kinds of shops to fit whatever purchases you want/need to make!  Beach shops selling any & all beach items along with sweatshirts & other clothes screen printed with “Block Island”!  There are hat shops, art galleries, jewelry stores, house decor shops,  clothing stores, shoe stores, sunglass shops & small artisan shops!  Plus Farmers Markets & a grocery store!

This is certainly not a complete list of everything to do, see or eat on Block Island…it is just our small piece of it!  One attraction I wanted to try, but wasn’t able to do was Stand Up Paddle boarding {SUP} because of my fractured ankle.  This will be on the list for next time!  But if you want to try SUP, check out Ocean Adventures for lessons, rentals & tours or Elevation Studio for SUP yoga!

My day was made when I was contacted by Stonyfield to do a review & giveaway!  Ava & Sophie love the YoKids line, especially YoKids Squezzers!  I gave the YoBaby to both girls when they were babies/toddlers, they both enjoyed the yogurt & I was happy that it was good for them!

I got coupons for free Stonyfield Greek yogurt & off I went to my local grocery store!  I tried 5 out of the 14 flavors to try…Plain, Strawberry, Pineapple, Vanilla & Super Fruits!

Here is what Stonyfield has to say:

“Everything we make is certified organic Our yogurts and other foods are labeled “organic” (rather than “100% organic”) because a small amount of our ingredients (5% or less) aren’t available in organic versions in sufficient quantity, quality or form.” – See more at: http://www.stonyfield.com/blog/certified-organic/#sthash.KFwpoqwm.dpuf

“We started as one farm 28 years ago and today we support hundreds of family farms through our ingredient sourcing.” – See more at: http://www.stonyfield.com/blog/we-love-our-farmers/#sthash.7jR34v5O.dpuf

My favorite flavor so far is the Super Fruit!

I used the Vanilla & Plain in smoothies for my husband & I, some with frozen fruit or protein!  But our all time favorite is a “Monkey” Smoothie, named by Ava!

2 servings protein powder {I use SFH vanilla or coconut}
2 frozen bananas {I slice very ripe bananas & freeze}
2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
2-4 Tbsp nut butter {I use almond or a chocolate almond)
1-2 Plain Stonyfield Greek Yogurt {depending on desired consistency}
A little water if needed to thin out
Serve & Enjoy!
All in all, I was very pleased with Stonyfield’s Greek yogurt!  It tasted great on its own or in a smoothie!  Not only did it taste great, but I knew I was eating something healthier compared to other greek yogurts…win win!!  Stonyfield also has a great site featuring the full product line, recipes, their own blog, store locater & a spot to sign up for free coupons!  You can also keep up with Stonyfield on FaceBook, Twitter, Pintrest & Instagram!
Stonyfield has graciously offered to give one of my readers FREE Greek Yogurt!  Yes, I said FREE!!  You would receive coupons that can be used at your local grocery store for FREE Stonyfield Greek Yogurt!!

*I was sent coupons for free product to review in order to share my opinion.  As always, my opinions are my own.
