Phase I of Houston Community College’s recycling program was a success and the college is kicking off Phase II this semester. From January 2011 through October 2011, with 7 campuses cites reporting, HCC diverted 62.807 tons from the common landfill site. Phase I included District 3100 Main, Central Campus, Willie Lee Gay Hall, Northeast Northline, Northwest Alief, Southeast Campus and Southwest Stafford locations.

Phase II will add three more HCC locations to the recycling initiative. District 3100 Main, Central Campus, Coleman Campus, Northeast Northline Campus, Northwest Spring Branch Campus, Northwest Katy Campus, Northwest Alief Campus, Southeast Campus, Southwest Missouri City Campus and Southwest West loop Center are all Phase II participants, making another exceptional year for recycling.

As members of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), HCC is committed to energy efficient processes and sustainable green projects for the college. In the spirit of this commitment, HCC is an entrant in this year’s RecycleMania competition. RecycleMania is a friendly competition among college and university recycling programs in North America and Canada. During eight weeks each spring, schools compete in different categories to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of waste per capita or have the highest recycling rate. This year’s competition will run from February 5 to March 31. Participating colleges will report the amount of recyclable items collected each week and subsequently receive a ranking in various categories, based on which institutions collect the most recyclable items, per capita. With each week’s updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce waste and recycle more. Eight HCC locations are participating in the RecycleMania competition.

Besides HCC’s recycling program, the college partnered with Chevron Energy Solutions to upgrade, retrofit and replace damaged, old or low efficiency equipment and processes for its buildings throughout the district. Renovations and retrofits of HCC’s lighting, atmospheric and water consumption applications at 29 separate HCC facilities will save HCC an estimated $600,000 a year. The projected savings over 15 years will be $11.3 million.

For more information about HCC’s energy saving and recycling projects, please go to hccs.edu/gogreen.

The impact of global warming and the inefficient use of our resources is a growing concern. It is up to America’s institutions of higher education to be on the frontline of efforts necessary to neutralize the effects.

Recognizing this need, HCC was one of the first institutions of higher learning to sign the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Dr. Spangler serves as co-chair of the ACUPCC’s Steering Committee.

HCC has formed its own Clean and Green Committee, which has developed energy efficient processes and sustainable green projects for the college. HCC has instituted a recycling program and partnered with Chevron Energy Solutions to upgrade, retrofit and replace damaged, old or low efficiency equipment and processes for its buildings throughout the district.

Renovations and retrofits of HCC’s lighting, atmospheric and water consumption applications at 29 separate HCC facilities will save HCC an estimated $600,000 a year. The projected savings over 15 years will be $11.3 million.

By instituting the energy saving measures, HCC’s energy provider, CenterPoint Energy, offers incentive rebates that will contribute to the overall savings the project engenders for the college. The initial incentive payment received from CenterPoint Energy in November, 2010 was $109,313.66.

Last year the recycling efforts at five of our campuses collected 100,390 lbs. of paper at 5 locations and saved 853 trees. This year three more buildings were added to our recycling efforts: 3100 Main, Northeast’s Northline Campus and Southwest’s Alief Campus. Paperless Initiatives supported through Information Technology also reduce HCC’s use of paper.

From Human Resources applications in Payroll, Training, and Time and Labor to electronic grade sheets and trans-scripting, an estimated 2,158,316 sheets of paper, 259,000 trees, 179 print heads and 60 print drums were saved through these efforts since the fall of 2008.

• Office temperature does tend to vary at times, so if your work area tends to be cooler, keep a sweater or
shawl on hand.
• Warm tea is not only good for you, it warms the body.
• If your office warms up in the afternoon due to large windows, wear lighter clothing under jackets or close
blinds.
• Purchase insulated lunch bags to keep food cool.
• Freeze drinks, then wrap in foil before placing in lunch bags.
• Ice machines are located at most campuses. Enjoy them.
4. Print double-sided when possible
• When copying documents for meetings, orientations and so on, it is more cost effective to copy two-sided.
• Marketing literature can be copied two-sided or on post cards.
• “Print Preview” before printing documents. Errors can be seen and corrected. This saves on paper and ink.
• Set up printers to automatically print two-sided.
• Network several areas to one printer. Areas will share the cost of toner.
5. Make Century Gothic your default font
• According to a UW-Green Bay study, the switch from the default font (Arial) to Century Gothic will cut back
on the amount of ink required—about 30 percent. Also , consider reducing font size to 10 or 11 and reduce
margins so that more information is printed on each page:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/can_switching_fonts_save_you_money
6. Reduce printing of instructional materials by making them accessible on-line
• Once students complete registration, they should receive course curriculum and textbook information
electronically.
• Post syllabi and important information on Blackboard or through PeopleSoft.
• Exam reviews and PowerPoint presentations can be sent to students electronically or posted to Moodle or
Learning Web.
7. Reduce your travel and travel smart
• HCC has purchased and implemented Cisco’s WebEx online meeting software (to review the FAQs go to
http://www.webex.com/what-is-webex/faqs.html). This tool has the potential to improve significantly our
productivity. The development of an online “how to” training for instructors and staff members is forthcoming.
• Documents can be sent to committee members electronically, with feedback from each. One meeting may
be necessary to finalize outcomes.
• When possible, plan ahead when requesting airline tickets and take advantage of “early bird” conference
registration discounts.
• If a larger group attends, negotiate conference fees.
• Schedule teleconference trainings whenever possible.
• Make sure you use your ID to have state tax waived or receive government rates whenever possible.
8. Report all water leaks
• Close tightly all water faucets.
• Report to your facilities/campus manager all noticeable water leaks (faucets, toilets, etc.).
9. Minimize the use of throwaways
• Use reusable cups/mugs for coffee.
• Store extra cups/mugs in break room for co-workers use.
• Use reusable drinking container for water.
• Throw all food and drinks in designated trash cans in break rooms, not in offices/cubicles.
10. Prioritize food/drink purchases
• Lunch should only be ordered for faculty/staff if meetings/trainings are all day or scheduled lunch meetings.
• Water coolers should be limited to break rooms and should not be in storage rooms or office suites.
• Departmental celebrations can be planned as “potluck.”

By March 2, three more HCC buildings began recycling. Paper recycling expanded to 3100 Main, Northline College, and Alief Hayes Road through an agreement with AbitibiBowater. Blue containers are now present in common areas, classrooms and offices making the recycling of reusable paper as easy as placing it in a wastebasket. Five HCC Campus’s already participate in formal recycling efforts and include Central’s Elgin and 288 campus’s, Southwest’s Stafford and Gulfton campus’s and Southeast’s Rustic campus.

The goal is to collect two tons of reusable paper at every location an AbitibiBowater bin is present. Almost any paper can be recycled. Types of paper include: office paper, brochures, old letterhead, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, fax paper, non-original forms, folders, and catalogs. As always, follow the HCC procedure for records management regarding the retention of records.

Aluminum cans and plastic water bottles can be recycled at the three new locations. Through the EcoRewards Program, single stream pickup allows recycling of the additional items. Look for the nearest bin and more information regarding recycling at each of these locations.

HCC is a signatory school of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). As such, HCC has made an institutional commitment to, “accelerate progress towards climate neutrality and sustainability.” Recycling is just one part of being a good steward of the environment.
