The pup-tastic grooming staff at Rover Oaks Pet Resort in Katy are helping animals from Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) go from bow to wow by providing weekly doggie makeovers for two lucky CAP dogs each Wednesday. Both pups also receive a free grooming certificate from Rover Oaks Katy so their new adoptive parents can continue to keep them looking their best!

Only one candidate was ready for her close up this week...Miss Lola, a three year old shih tzu/lhasa/terrier/we are not sure mix, found as a stray near Barker-Cypress and Forest Heights.

Meet Lola BEFORE Her Rover’s Makeover:

Whatever she is, she is cute! She was very matted, and had a lot of sticker burrs in the mats close to her skin, so she had to be shaved in order to start over. She has apparently never been groomed before and found the process a little scary, but once she realized it was making her feel better she was a very good girl. Lola is pretty calm and quiet...and once her stray hold is up on the 11th if her people haven't found her, she will be ready for a wonderful home.

Check Out Lola NOW!

Lola, along with many other wonderful dogs, cats and small animals, are waiting patiently for wonderful homes at Citizens for Animal Protection, 17555 Katy Freeway (I-10 at Barker-Clodine). You can also check them out on the web at www.cap4pets.org, but as there are many more animals at the shelter than are listed on the website it is definitely worth a visit.

This weekend, from February 10 - 14, CAP (along with other members of the Animal Shelter Alliance of Greater Houston) will be hosting Have a Heart specials...offering 50% off adoption fees on some of the many "hearts in waiting". http://www.cap4pets.org/component/jce/?view=popup&tmpl=component&img=images/stories/news/CAPValentine2012.jpg&title=

Houston Beagle and Hound Rescue presents Bogie, a healthy 15-inch beagle weighing in at 31 pounds. Although 2-years of age, Bogie still has quite a bit of puppy enthusiasm in him. He is very affectionate with his foster family and their mature female beagles. Bogie arrived at HBHR house-broken and doggy door trained. He does well on leash walks, and does not hesitate to express his excitement for going on walks. Bogie is improving daily with commands such as sit, off, and wait, and is learning to chew appropriate items. Bogie is best suited to a family that already has a dog, particularly an older one who is calmer than him.

If you are looking for another canine companion to add to your family, please contact HBHR about adopting adorable Bogie! Please visit http://www.houstonbeaglerescue.org/index.php and follow the instructions on adoption. Our regular adoption fee is $225; special needs, mixes and senior dogs are $175, and pups 8 months and younger are $275. The fee includes spay or neuter, vaccines, flea and heartworm preventative or treatment, a leash, collar or rescue ID tag, microchip, and some training. Some dogs may have had additional vet care such as orthopedic surgeries, heartworm treatment or other procedures, but these “extras” will not affect their adoption fee. HBHR always welcomes donations to help with vet care!

This Valentine’s Day weekend, five Houston area animal welfare organizations are teaming up to help thousands of homeless and deserving animals find permanent, loving, forever homes. The Houston Humane Society (HHS), Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), HCPHES Veterinary Public Health, the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HSPCA), and BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions (BARC) encourage Houstonians to open their heart and their home to a homeless animal this February. February 10th – 12th, each shelter will offer half off adoption fees for select pets to help homeless animals all over the Houston area find their true love. Adoption policies, costs, promotions, date of promotions, and shelter hours may vary. Make sure to contact each participating shelter for more information.

All five organizations have adorable, healthy pets of all breeds, colors, sizes and ages eagerly awaiting their new homes. We know people looking for a furry best friend are sure to find true, unconditional and lasting love when they open their hearts and give a homeless animal a second chance at life.

Thanks to our friends from DogHelpNetwork.com for this important info on Parvo! When it comes to Canine Parvovirus, or Parvo, every second counts. Parvo is a very contagious, very serious disease that can affect any dog. Parvo can last up to three months in your dog’s system, and can kill your dog within 2-3 days if not treated properly. It is a tragic virus for any dog lover.

Symptoms of Parvo may not be present in your dog for up to 14 days. The main symptoms include vomiting and extreme, foul smelling diarrhea. Parvo can quickly affect your dog and it is imperative to get him to the veterinarian as soon as possible. If left untreated, your dog will likely die from this disease.

How does my dog get Parvo?

There are many different ways your dog may contract Parvo. It is extremely contagious and can last in the household up to six months. Often times you will never know where your dog contracted Parvo, but there are a few causes to keep in mind:

Puppies. Parvo can affect dogs of all ages, but young puppies (6-20 weeks old) are especially susceptible. Once a puppy has been infected, there is about a 50/50 chance of survival, if it’s caught soon enough. Cardiac Parvo strikes newborn puppies and often results in death.

Unvaccinated Dogs. It is extremely important to have puppies vaccinated at your veterinarian’s recommendations. Dogs and puppies who have not been vaccinated for Parvo have a higher chance of contracting the virus and their immune systems have no way of fending it off.

Direct Contact. Contact with another infected dog can transfer the virus. Places like dog parks, kennels and dog pounds are examples of areas your dog could become infected with Parvo.

Feces. Parvovirus can live inside a dog’s system for up to 3 months. If your dog has eaten feces, or has come into indirect contact with fecal matter (dog fur, insects, dried particles, shoes, etc.) he can easily become infected.

Certain Breeds. Any dog can contract Parvovirus. However, for unknown reasons, certain breeds seem to be more vulnerable. These include Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers and other black and tan colored breeds.

Symptoms of Parvo:

The most common symptoms of Parvo are vomiting and diarrhea. However, there are some other signs to look out for when dealing with Parvo. Some other symptoms may include:

- Lethargy

- Loss of appetite

- Weakness

- Dizziness

- High fever

- Apparent pain or discomfort

Diagnosis of Parvo:

Your veterinarian will perform blood and feces tests to confirm the virus. Once it is properly diagnosed, treatment will begin immediately. It is said that if your dog makes it past the first two to three days of treatment, he has a high chance of survival.
