I have been lost my job due to the economy...again. This is the third consecutive job that I have been in the unlucky position to have it be cut.

This means I am back on the unemployment train. In addition, it means that more than likely I will be sweeping floors. Not that I mind. All that truly matters is that my wife is happy, my home is kept and my dogs are loved. Do not get me wrong. There is a passion to have a satisfying career or profession. For the time being I will settle for a lasting position. I fear the reaper. And his name is called the job line.

Aside from that, I have the great pleasure of doing several side jobs in the technology world. The first one the vice president at Century 21. I created an online marketing campaign to advertise his home across various social networks. This entailed creating a Facebook, Blogger site, Wordpress, Linkedin, and so on, websites to advertise his home that he was selling. Well, it was a success! He sold his home within one month! Quite unheard of in this fickle real estate market, right? I know the peson who did buy the home had seen a page I set-up on-line (unsure which site). So, I'll pat myself on the back on this one.

The other job is still in progress. I'll hold off my thoughts until it is finalized.

My only exciting news is my pick up for a 24" Imac. I traded my Macbook Pro (15") for a 24" Imac (new), 8GB Iphone 2G and $100. The laptop bag and a lovely unused coffee/cappuccino maker were included. The deal worked out great, I have to say, quite well for me.
I'll miss my laptop but I really wanted a mac desktop. There is no way I could afford a Desktop Mac Pro. Those range from $2,200 to $2,600. So, the Imac was the next big option. The 24" makes my 22" wide screen next to it look small in comparison.

From here on out, I want to keep a daily (or I will try) blog about the transition from the PC world to Mac. I've been dabbling with Leopard, on the Macbook pro, for a few months now. My goal is to use the PC less and less. I will still be using Vista and XP, using Parallels, in the virutal world. So, I won't be turning my nose up to the PC world all-together.

Sony Releases New Stupid Piece Of Shit That Doesn't Fucking Work

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle> Sony Releases New Stupid Piece Of Shit That Doesn't Fucking Work</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>noreply@blogger.com (Yossarian)</itunes:author><itunes:summary> Sony Releases New Stupid Piece Of Shit That Doesn't Fucking Work</itunes:summary>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.theonion.com/content/themes/common/assets/onn_embed/embedded_player.swf</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Becoming a new species -evolving

We are becoming a new species, we are becoming Homo Evolutis

At TED 2009, Juan Enriquez talked about the new human species emerging before our eyes. Thanks to an array of biological advances and our growing aptitude in robotics, we now find ourselves in the early days of the deliberate creation of what he called a new species.

By Ken Fisher | Last updated February 5, 2009 5:25

At TED 2009, now halfway through the near-weeklong binge of activities and presentations, Juan Enriquez energized and perhaps terrorized attendees with his brief look into the future of human affairs, and indeed, of the human species. What made Enriquez' presentation so engaging was that his vision wasn't that far off, this sci-fi future that he spoke of; it's the future that is unveiling itself right before us, a future that we will all likely watch arrive, and our children will come to know as reality.

Chairman and CEO of Biotechonomy, Enriquez says that humanity is on the verge of becoming a new and utterly unique species, which he dubs Homo Evolutis. What makes this species so unique is that it "takes direct and deliberate control over the evolution of the species." Calling it the "ultimate reboot," he points to the conflux of DNA manipulation and therapy, tissue generation, and robotics as making this great leap possible.

We are already in the midst of minor improvements to the human body and mind; Enriquez gave examples of growing new tissues for successful transplant, programmable cells, and augmenting our abilities through robotics. As this trend accelerates, more and more aspects of the human experience, of the human life, will be capable of scientific manipulation. While some improvement may come post-birth, our understanding of DNA and biology may lead to something much bigger.

The day may come when we are able to take the best biology of the known animal kingdom and make it part of our own. This isn't just about being a bit stronger, or having perfect eyesight our whole lives. All of our organs and limbs have weaknesses that can be addressed, and there are also opportunities to go beyond basic fixes and perform more elaborate enhancements. At a private lunch on Thursday, Enriquez spoke of a young girl who, after suffering a knee injury, received tendon replacement therapy centered around tendons grown in a lab. It not only fixed her knee, but made it stronger than normal. Later in life as she pursued life as a professional skier, he coach actually asked that she have the same surgery on her other knee to increase her abilities.

The point was clear: one day it will be possible for everyone to have stronger joints, bones, etc., thanks to work being done today, work which may ultimately be delivered into DNA. We would become a species that could, literally, control its own biological destiny.

All TED talks are limited to 18 minutes (in theory), so Enriquez wasn't able to elaborate beyond the basic points, nor was he able to field questions, which would have undoubtedly included essentialist objections to his notion of speciation or evolution. But for those 18 minutes, Enriquez painted the clearest path towards humanity's Borg-like future I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. It is no coincidence that he also mentioned, briefly, the need for ethical dialog around these issues.

All of this, coincidentally, was prefaced by a short discussion about our economic woes as of late, and Enriquez's view of the way out. With the massive growth in mandatory spending, Enriquez called for an end to entitlements, and a return to the acceptance of austerity. Tough times are unavoidable.

He also had comments on the workforce that were more relevant to his presentation. Like many, Enriquez believes that our workforce is going to work later and later in life, to the age of 70 and beyond. This is necessary because we need more production, and also because we must reduce the amount of time seniors spend collecting money from governments. In this way, the dawn of Homo Evolutis will not merely be occasioned by our desire to live longer, but by the necessity of it.

Make a Smilebox postcard

For my Dear Friends

If you are looking for a program, song, movie, etc...

E-mail me or leave a comment. I can not give you an explanation for why I am not excited. After all, who hates your day of birth? It truly is an amazing series. It is complex in nature, separating itself from other shows. The characters are dynamic and realistic. No one is spared their dignity, not one person is perceived innocent, nor can a character be idolized. They are all flawed human beings, as we are behind the doors, exposed for all to see.

This last episode, the final moments of this show has torn me up inside. I wept without remorse. 1 The basic concept from the start of the show with a death (the father) and the beginning of Claire's life is the end of the show. This makes sense. However, it hit me deep. I have no faith. No God. I fear the death of those whom I love and the eventual end to this life. I cannot stop the inevitable: I will grow old, those I know will to, and eventually leave this world. Yet, I want to leave with the dignity bestowed upon those I love.

When I think of this episode...it tears me a bit inside. It is for the best. And I know it. My unripened, youthful self is peeling back. The sweetest part of my life has just begun-may I savor it...

However, I know it is more than just moving beyond the past. It was a haunting reminder of life that occurred a few months ago. Something I rather not have spoken of but rather to encapsulate into words. Yes, words, to...take the bitter taste away from the gross reality.

I went with my wife to visit her grandmother whom had gotten sick at a rapid pace. Her cancer, unknown to her at the time, was eating away-within. We thought, or were told, or wanted to think, to believe, that her placement in the hospital was a step forward toward health. But then there were signs that we all ignored, didn't want to believe, didn't want to verbalize, that life is but a cycle. She stopped eating. Her jokes diminished quicker than her smile. Sleep overcame the insomniac's inhibition. And slowly, she faded. She slept. I was 'there' when cruel reality had come to everyone's lips. When the tears of acceptance came and aided in her journey. She was gone, rather quickly, or slowly if you accept our denial, without a word. Sleep was eternal.

Yet, the thought or image that came rushing through my brain into my dilated eyes was of my dog Buddy. I would feel sad for confessing this if I felt any different about death.
My first dog, buddy, lived to a young age of 16 years until he stayed outside in the rain too long. He was a typical run-away pup, who was used to the uninhibited days on the farm. The neighbor came to our door that night and had him wrapped up in a blanket, in his arms. He said some spiteful words about our family "not caring", but he was clearly wrong about one part; he just never realized to what extent.
And the face, the look, his expression,...all if it...was just so sad. His tongue, much like my wife's grandmother, was hanging with reason to which side it lay in the mouth. The breathing was no different than hers-a rattling, nonrhythmic ventilation of stagnant air. It served no purpose other than what the brain told the lungs to do: keep living. Or, stay alive, without living.
The eyes were closed; but when revealed, the fog was settling in like a cold, bitter, windy rainy night. No warmth can be seen behind it- with nothing to expose. His body, no different than her own her, lay abandoned by the prior owner.

And all I could think was how we are such fragile shells. All that mattered-her laugh, personality, ideas, morals, visions and love-had left. What remains was two empty shells with only time to wash away the memories that will haunt or compel us.

<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:subtitle>My wife and I watched the whole season of Six Feet Under. Or, should I say career? It's a marketing position in which I have no background experience in. Not that I am concerned as I know I can learn rather quickly. Yet, it is a bit spooky stepping into the darkness for the first time. The only light is the glimmer of motivation I bring in with it.
