This past few week Lisa, my daughter is almost 17 years old often came home late from her lesson. Again and again I ask, the answer is always traffic jam. She usually not like that, she always home on time.

Our relationship was not good indeed. Since she asked for permission to join the school band and I'm not allow it, it's just like my daughter put up a barrier to our relationship. She always keep silence even though I tried to ask. She was a quiet type, but once she was always warm to me. I really miss my spoiled little girl, sweet and always open to me.

I asked my husband to intervene. But it makes our relationship even worse. Even he put his hands up and asked me to be patient. "Lisa maybe need time alone. Be patient!"

As days past our relationship get more worse. I became increasingly irritable because I do not know how else to talk to my daughter. If she forgot about her task, I immediately snaps and mad at her. She keep quiet but her eyes did not look like it.

When finally I decided to be quiet, it's like our house save fire in the straw. Looks cool, but it's ready to explode. I opted to avoid encounter with my daughter. I thought Lisa was old enough, I know my daughter well. She would not do anything bad if she knew how much I opposed her wish to become a singer.

Back when Lisa was still in elementary school, her teacher said that she has a beautiful voice. But in our family, no one works as a singer. Moreover, I know the artist's world is a glitzy world far from spiritual values. So I chose to put her into a regular high school. Lisa is smart, so I never tried to explore her potential as a singer.

Many times before requesting permission to join the band, Lisa always put in a word that if she became a singer, she did not want to be a regular entertainer singer. She wants to be a very qualified singer, and most importantly she'll never forget to worship. At that time I just laugh at her desire by saying, "Do you believe with a voice like that you could make a living?" I know it hurts her, it's better that she was aware of the singer's glitzy world not as easy as she had seen on television.

A few days after the last time talking to Lisa, one night she came up to me and her dad after dinner. She handed me an invitation. I picked it up, read it "High School Fund Night".

"Please come, mom! Dad. I became the chairman committee in this event. I wish Mom and Dad were there.", she pleaded earnestly.

Maybe this is a sign that my daughter want to make up. Of course I do not want to miss this. I want to see one of my daughter's success. With a sincere smile, I nodded in agreement. Her smile makes my heart believe, my daughter already understand why I forbid it.

Finally the event that we are waiting for. I went with my husband, we got the second row seat. Lisa's teacher greet me, as well as my daughter's friends. But I do not see her anywhere. I even asked my husband to help me look for her.

Suddenly, a girl gave me a sheet of paper containing the list of events. I quickly read it and I think my daughter was probably getting ready backstage. Maybe she was elected to speech represent her friends later because I see there is one event titled "Dedication of the heart by Lisa", I think this a strange title for a speech, but teenager nowadays are good at making unique things.

One by one the event begins. Speech from the chief organizer in fact represented by the vice organizer of the event. Where is my daughter? What presentation she would do. I was wondering, my husband tells me to keep quiet and listen because he tired of all my questions. While still curious, I'm trying to concentrate on the events.

Finally, the event organizer say "Let us follow the next event, dedication of the heart by Lisa. And also the chief organizer of this fund night. Let us welcome Lisa!"

The stage curtain slowly open, along with a music sound. I looked at the stage in disbelief when I saw my daughter standing in the middle, smiling at me. Worries making my hands shaking, my stomach feels queasy and I'm so nervous, get ready to be humiliated. Ok, ok but I don't want to let my daughter nervous. "O God, give her strength, give her courage" I prayed silently. Unconsciously my hand clutching my husband's hand. We both hold the doubts and fears together.

She softly sing a song of Celine Dion's "Because you loved me .."

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I’ll be forever thankful baby

I ran out of word. Is it true that my daughter is singing? I looked at my daughter's eyes. I looked at her admiringly. How could that powerful voice out of her tiny lips that never says so hard?

I never realize that Lisa have a really beautiful voice. She look different, she's no longer my calm and quiet daughter, she was so sparkling in the stage light. Oh God, I just realize I have one of your angel. Her voice is so soft voiced her love to me. Oh God, you have open my eyes, open my heart and told me that you have give me a very special gift, a talented and gifted daughter.

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall

I’m grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don’t know that much

My daughter who always listen to what I say now standing on the stage, voicing out her heart, beg me one more chance. Her hand lead me, as if begging a chance to undergo one wish. Her beautiful voice beg me to give her permission. "Mother, give me one more chance."

I know she dedicating this song for me. Because I like this song and I used to ask her to sing this song. A song I often sing while she was still in primary school. The song that I sang for her whenever she felt sad. This is our song, about us, about the love of a child and her mother ...

Beautiful sounding shriek hit my tighten chest. For some reason, suddenly tears dripping from my eyes. Oh, let these tears away, let me see my daughter, seeing my little angels sing. I don't want to lose this most precious moments of my life. I look at her with pride.

My daughter's long voice redo the song refrain make my tears flow freely. I nod to her. I know she see me because she smiled. "Yes, you can sing.", I whisper to myself.

The song end, my daughter smile despite the tears down her cheeks. I stand up, and give her an applause as hard as I can. I don't care about anyone else, I don't care about my husband, I don't even care if it just me who stand and applaud her. I just want to tell her, "You're great! Really great!". I want to tell her that she was the best. But the sound of thunderous applause drown my screams. Everyone stand up to give a standing applause for her. But on the stage, Lisa just look at me, look at her mother's gratitude.

Dear God, thank you because everyone like my daughter performance. I look at my husband and I see his teary eyes. We can not say a word.

Lisa run down the stage toward us. I just know that greet her with hugs are the best thing I could do. She hug tightly, "Thank you.", she whisper over and over again.

Oh God, thank you for giving my daughter the courage to express her desire. I'm sorry I never give her a chance for this, and it almost made me lose the opportunity to have this so much pride. Thank you God, you give me the opportunity to be the best mother for her.

Psychopath is a status for people who suffer from psychopathy, a personality disorder that is characterized by the absence of the slightest feeling of guilt when violating a norm or rule. Psychopaths are also identical to the cruel behavior and fearless.

Psychopath is sometimes difficult to identify, because most psychopaths appear normal or even very friendly in their daily life. But behind it all, a psychopath has no conscience of empathy or sensitivity to the surrounding environment.

According to research, 1 in 100 people actually have a psychopathy tendency with varying levels. The 10 the following statement can be used simply to estimate how much the tendency for someone to be a psychopath.

A customer came to the barber to cut his hair. The barber began cutting his hair and start a warm conversation. They talked about many things and various subject, and instant topic of the conversation turned to God.

The barber said, "I do not believe God exists."
"Why do you say that?" replied the customer.
"Well, you just look ahead, in the streets. To realize that God does not exist. Tell me, if God exists, will there be a sick people?, Neglected children? If God exists, there will be no pain or distress. I can not imagine God the Most Merciful will let it all happen."

The customer thought for a moment, but did not respond because he do not want to start an argument. The barber's finish the job and he left the place. After some time he left the room he saw a man on the street with long hair, wavy, dirty and long beard. The man looked dirty and unkempt.

The customer back into the barbershop and said, "You know, actually there is NO barber. The barber did not take it, "How can you said that?. I'm here and I am a barber. And just now I cut your hair!"
"No!" said the consumer.

"The barbers do not exist, because if there is a barber, there will be no people with dirty long hair and bearded like a man out there", the customer adds.

"Ah no, but still there is a barber!", protested the barber. "What you see is their own fault, why they do not come to me", replied the barber defensively.

"Exactly!" said the customer agreed. "That's the main point! It's the same with GOD, GOD IS ALSO THERE!, But what happened to the people DO NOT WANT TO COME to him, and DO NOT WANT TO FIND HER. Therefore a lot of pain and sorrow stricken in this world.", the barber stupefied!!

From the very beginning, the girl's family objected strongly on her dating this guy. Saying that it has got to do with family background & that the girl will have to suffer for the rest of her life if she were to be with him.?

Due to family's pressure, the couple quarrel very often. Though the girl love the guy deeply, but she always ask him: "How deep is your love for me?"

As the guy is not good with his words, this often causes the girl to be very upset. With that & the family's pressure, the girl often vents her anger on him. As for him, he only endures it in silence.

After a couple of years, the guy finally graduated & decided to further his studies in overseas. Before leaving, he proposed to the girl: "I'm not very good with words. But all I know is that I love you. If you allow me, I will take care of you for the rest of my life. As for your family, I'll try my best to talk them round. Will you marry me?"

The girl agreed, & with the guy's determination, the family finally gave in & agreed to let them get married. So before he leaves, they got engaged.

The girl went out to the working society, whereas the guy was overseas, continuing his studies. They sent their love through emails & phone calls. Though it's hard, but both never thought of giving up.

One day, while the girl was on her way to work, she was knocked down by a car that lost control. When she woke up, she saw her parents beside her bed. She realized that she was badly injured. Seeing her mum crying, she wanted to comfort her. But she realized that all that could come out of her mouth was just a sigh. She has lost her voice.

The doctor says that the impact on her brain has caused her to lose her voice. Listening to her parents' comfort, but with nothing coming out from her, she broke down.

During the stay in hospital, besides silence cry, it's still just silence cry that companied her. Upon reaching home, everything seems to be the same. Except for the ringing tone of the phone. Which pierced into her heart every time it rang. She does not wish to let the guy know. & not wanting to be a burden to him, she wrote a letter to him saying that she does not wish to wait any longer.

With that, she sent the ring back to him. In return, the guy sent millions & millions of reply, and countless of phone calls, all the girl could do, besides crying, is still crying.

The parents decided to move away, hoping that she could eventually forget everything & be happy.

With a new environment, the girl learnt sign language & started a new life. Telling herself everyday that she must forget the guy. One day, her friend came & told her that he's back. She asked her friend not to let him know what happened to her. Since then, there wasn't anymore news of him.

A year has passed & her friend came with an envelope, containing an invitation card for the guy's wedding. The girl was shattered. When she opened the letter, she saw her name in it instead.

When she was about to ask her friend what's going on, she saw the guy standing in front of her. He used sign language telling her "I've spent a year's time to learn sign language. Just to let you know that I've not forgotten our promise. Let me have the chance to be your voice. I
Love You." With that, he slipped the ring back into her finger. The girl finally smiled.

Once upon a time in a large pond there lived a young frog and his mother. The frog is very naughty and never listen to his mothers. If his mother told him to go to the mountain, he would go to sea. If her mother told him to go to the east, he would go west. Anyway whatever he was told, he will do the opposite.

"What should I do to this kid" thought the mother frog. "Why does he not like any other kids, always obey their parents."

One day the mother said, "Son, do not go outside because it was raining outside. You'll be drifting by the tide."

Her mother had not finished talking, he already jumps out, laughing happily, "Hooray ... flood, I will play as much as I like!"

Every day mother frog advised her son but the child's behavior was even more worst. It made mother frog gloomy and sad and make her ill. Everyday the illness became worse.

One day she felt that she's getting weaker, mother frog called her son, "Son, I think my life will not be long. If I die, do not bury me on the mountain, bury me on the edge of the river."

Mother frog actually wanted to be buried on the mountain, but because her son always do the opposite, so she request the contrary.

Finally, the mother frog was dead. The frog were crying and regretted his behavior, "Poor mother. Why I never want to listen to her words. Now she has gone, I've killed her."

The frogs then recalled his mother last request. "I always do whatever my mother prohibited. Now to make amends, I will do her request as well as possible."

So the frog bury her mother in the riverbank.

Several weeks later the rain falling heavily, so the river water where the frog bury his mother to overflow. The frog was so concerned about his mother's grave will be swept away by the river water. Finally he decided to go to the river and watched.

In the midst of a torrential rain she wept and wept. "Kwong-Kwong-Kwong. O river do not take my mother away!"

And the frog will always go to the river and cry every rain. Since that is why until today we always hears frogs cry every rain.

The Forgotten Mirror

Once upon a time, a married couple, just say it their was the Smith, and they held a garage sale to sell all the things that they don't need anymore. Their was already middle-aged, and their children have left home to live independently. Now it's time to tidy up the house, and sell things that are not needed anymore.

While collecting things to be sold, they found something that have been stored in the attic for so long. One of them is a mirror in which they got for their wedding gift, 20 years ago.

Since the first time they got it, the mirror was never used. Aqua blue colored frame makes this mirror to look bad, and not suitable to be placed in any room in their house. But because they don't want to hurt the person who gave it, they kept it. Thus, the mirror being an antics in the attic. After 20 years passed, they think the people who gift it would have forgotten. So they put it together with other things to be sold the next day.

Their garage sale were getting a lot of enthusiasts. People come to see the sale. One by one, all the things have sold. Home furnishings, books, clothing, gardening tools, toys, even a not working old radio.

A man approached Mrs. Smith. "How much is this mirror?" he said, pointing at the mirror.

Mrs. Smith was stunned. "I myself don't expect that this mirror would be sold. Do you really want to buy it?" she said. "Yes, of course. The conditions are still very good." replied the man.

Mrs. Smith did not know how much the fair price for the bad mirror. Although it's in a very good condition, but for her it remains an ugly and worthless mirror.

After thinking for a moment, Mrs. Smith said, "Hmm ... you can buy it for a dollar."

With beaming face, the man pulled out his wallet, pulled out a dollar and handed it to Mrs. Smith. "Thanks," she said. "Now the mirror is yours. Do you need it wrapped?"

"Oh, if allowed, I would like to check it before I brought it home."

Mrs. Smith gives the permission, and he hurried to take the mirror and put it on the table in front of her. He began to peel the edge of the mirror frame. With one pull he torn the protection layer and emerges a golden color. The mirror frame was painted with a very beautiful gold color, and the aqua blue color that had been covered it is the color of the protective layer of the frame!

"Yes, exactly as I expected! Thank you!" he shouts happily.

Mrs. Smith could not say a word seeing the mirror was taken away by its new owner, to obtain a more appropriate place than her small and dusty attic.

This story illustrates how we view our lives. Sometimes we feel our life is boring, not as nice as we want. We see our life in the form of a series of routines that we must live. Wake up early, go to work, come home in the afternoon, sleep, wake up, go to work, come home in the afternoon, sleeping. That's all we live every day.

As with Mr and Mrs. Smith, who only saw the plastic coating of the mirror frame, so they feel the mirror is ugly and not fit. Yet behind that layer, there is a beautiful golden color.

Yet behind the routine of our lives, there are many things that can enrich our lives. Every time we passed, we can only experience once our lifetime. Every second we live, apply only one time in our lives. Every second is a new gift from God to us. Will we waste it with fixed on a routine? Will we let the time pass by our lives do not feel like we want?

After twenty years, and after being delayed, then Mrs. Smith realized the real value of the mirror. Would we realize the beauty of our lives when it's too late? Of course not.

Therefore, let us begin eroding our view that life is just routine. Let's start peeling the routine and find the real value of our lives.

Once upon a time in a small island, there is Love, Sad, Wealth, Happy and Beauty. They coexist well. But one day, there's a storm and the sea water suddenly rose and would sink the island. All the inhabitants of the island quickly tried to save themselves. Love is very confused because she can not swim and not have boats.

She stood on the beach trying to find help. Meanwhile, the water increased and soaked her feet. Then Love see Wealth is pedaling a boats. "Wealth! Wealth! Help me!", shouted Love.

"Sorry, Love!", said Wealth, "My boat filled with all my treasures. I can not take you as well, this boat will sink. Moreover, there is no place anymore for you in this boat.", then Wealth quickly pedaled his boat away.

Love was so sad, but then he saw Happy passing by with his boat. "Happy! Help me!", shouted Love. But Happy was too happy because he found a boat so he could not hear Love shouting.

The water getting higher and soaked Love to the waist and she increasingly frantic. Not long Beauty pass. "Beauty! Take me with you!", shouted Love.

"Love you're wet and dirty. I can't take you with me. You're going to pollute this beautiful boat.", Beauty said.

Love was so sad to hear that. She began sobbing. Sad that moment pass."Oh, Sad, take me with you," said Love. "Sorry, Love. I'm sad and I want to be alone ... ", Sad said, still pedaling the boat.

Love feel desperate. She felt the water getting up and going to drown her. At that critical moment suddenly she heard a voice, "Love! Quickly climbed into my boat!"

Love turned her head toward the sound and saw an old man with his boat. Love quickly climbed into the boat, just before the water drown her. On the nearest island, the old man let Love get off his boat, and immediately left.

At that moment, Love realized that she did not know who the old man who save her. Love ask an old people in the island, who is actually the old man. "The old man? He is Time.", said the man.

"But, why did he save me? I do not know him. Even my friends who know me also reluctant to help me "Love asked in surprise."

"Because," the man said, "Only Time who knows what the real value of Love is ..."

There were two male patients who suffer severe pain. They were treated in the same hospital. The first man allowed to sit in bed every evening for an hour. The aim is that the fluid from his lungs will be excreted. The bed is located near the only window in the room. The second was a man who must always lie in the supine condition. Because between the two beds there was a high walls, the men who sleep supine could not see into the window.

Both men are often in conversation. All kinds of topic. From about their wives, families, homes, jobs, military conscription until the places visited during the holidays. In the afternoon, as the man who occupies the bed near the window allowed to sit, he talked to his roommate. He tell all the things he saw outside the window.

The man who could only lay after a long time can enjoy his friend's story. For an hour a day, expanded worldview and revived by hearing about all the events and the colorful outside world. The window overlooking a garden. In the garden there is also a beautiful lake with ducks and geese that swim in it. Children play with their toy sail boat. A husband and wife walking arm in arm among the colorful flowers like a color of rainbow. Several large trees grow in the grass. Beautiful city scenery from a distance.

The day passed. The men who could not see out the window silently arise envy because of the stories tells by his roommate, because he wanted to see everything with his own eyes. He began to hate his roommate and feel frustrated. He also wanted to occupy a bed near the window!

One morning a nurse came into their room. The men who sleep near the window was found died peacefully in his sleep. With sadness she called the hospital caretaker to move the body.

Having considered timely, a man who is still hospitalized asked if he could be moved to the bed near the window. The nurse do not object to move him and after making sure her patients in a safe position, she left him alone. Slowly, with pain, he tried to pull himself up, for the first time to see the world outside the window. He thought, finally, he could also enjoy the happiness when he saw outside the park and all activities there. He tried to look . But he became very surprised because it turned out that he saw only an empty wall. He immediately called the nurse and asked, "How can my roommate could see everything he told me? Loving someone does not mean giving us full rights to own or manage a person's life. Can we claim to love someone if we always confine him or her? Giving freedom is one of the manifestations of love. The meaning of freedom is not, "You're free to do all you want." Much deeper than that, given the freedom is to give full trust to be responsible for everything that he or she had decided or done.
BEAUTY
Who would not be happy, if your loved ones suddenly appear more handsome or beautiful? Shown beautiful is also a wonderful gift you know. Besides the beauty of personal appearance, you can also give away a beauty atmosphere at home. Beautiful vases and fresh flowers in the family room or dining room table beautifully arranged, for example.
POSITIVE RESPONSE
Unconsciously, we often give a negative assessment for the thoughts, attitudes or actions of our loved one. It was as if none of the absolute truth of them and only on us. This time, try the gift of positive responses. Express clearly and sincerely. Try to remember, how many times in your last week to thank you for everything he or she does for you. Also remember, do you ever praised he or her. Those two things, thanks and praise (and apologies), is a gift of love that is often forgotten.
WILLINGNESS TO SUCCUMB
Not all problems deserve to be fighting for. Especially to be a great hassle. You should consider, should be love sacrificed just because of the problem? When you have consider about this, it means you are ready to give the gift of "willingness to succumb". Okay, you may be upset or angry because he or she arrived late for appointments. But if it happened only once, so why should trigger a protracted quarrel? Willingness to yield to wear off the pain in our heart and shows us to realize that is no man is perfect in this world.
SMILE
Believe it or not, the incredible power of a smile. Smile, especially given sincerely, could be defrost frozen relations, the encourager in despair. Lightening mood somber, even a troubled soul sedative. Smile is also a gesture to open up the world around us. When was the last time that you give away a sweet smile on a loved one?

Steve Jobs' 2005 Stanford Commencement Address

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest
universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the
closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three
stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as
a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?
It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college
graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very
strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set
for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped
out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents,
who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an
unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological
mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that
my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final
adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised
that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost
as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being
spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had
no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help
me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved
their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK.
It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I
ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that
didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends'
rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would
walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at
the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following
my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you
one example:
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the
country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was
beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take
the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I
learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space
between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great.
It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture,
and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years
later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me.
And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful
typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac
would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since
Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have
them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy
class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they
do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in
college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them
looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your
future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma,
whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference
in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in
my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had
grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000
employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year
earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from
a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was
very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went
well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a
falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was
out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was
gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous
generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being
passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for
screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running
away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved
what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been
rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the
best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being
successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about
everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company
named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife.
Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy
Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a
remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the
technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance.
And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from
Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes
life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the
only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find
what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work
is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to
do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love
what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all
matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship,
it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find
it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if
it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on
me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every
morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want
to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No"
for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever
encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything
— all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these
things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of
thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not
to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning,
and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas
was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is
incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My
doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code
for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd
have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure
everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It
means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they
stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines,
put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated,
but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a
microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare
form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm
fine now.
This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for
a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit
more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get
there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it.
And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of
Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right
now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become
the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be
trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking.
Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most
important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow
already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth
Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow
named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life
with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and
desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid
cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google
came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.
Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then
when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I
was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early
morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were
so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was
their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have
always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that
for you.

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
