I am one of the resident experts featured in Julie’s Blog Support Room – Q&A Weds 6pm EDT. This Skype chat room allows visitors who have questions about blogging, to ask them online and get an answer specific to their situation. It’s been a pretty good system so far.

How do I see the keywords used on someone else’s site? My Goal: use the same keywords (or better with help of Market Samurai) to promote her site : http://www.freshthemovie.com on my blog http://www.holistic-zone.com

Without further ado…

First, there are many ways to deconstruct your competitions sites and pages (including Market Samurai), so here are just a couple — explore via Google once you see how, to find more ways.

Method 1: (Search Status)

Free browser add on

Quirk’s Search Status is a small tool that sits at the bottom of Firefox’s browser and allows you to see the meta tags, (such as keywords, title and description) for any page on a website. Install the Add on, restart Firefox, then right click the Q in a circle that it adds to the status bar. In the fly out menu, select the Meta Tags menu item.
This tool will display every meta tag directed at the search engines such as title, description, keywords, author, generators and robot instructions.
There are is a LOT more this tool will do for you. So much so, it probably deserves it’s own post to cover them. A quick list of additional features includes:

Highlighting Nofollow Links
Generating a Link Report
Show other domains on the IP address
Show the WhoIs Info for the domain
Show the robots.txt file used for that page
Show the sitemap.xml file (if found) for the domain
Show the keyword density for the page. You enter the keyword to review
Highlight a specific keyword everywhere it appears on the page
Show all pages indexed in a variety of search engines
Show Backward links. This will show all inbound links registered with the search engines!

Method 2: (Term Extractor)

Free Online Tool

SEO moz has a term extractor tool. You give it a URL, and it extract the terms (keywords) it thinks are being directed at the search engines. Basically, this tool analyzes the content of a given page and extracts the terms that appear to be targeted at search engines. It applies certain weights to HTML elements and other on-page factors to determine what it thinks is a targeted term.

It works by allowing you to enter a URL, and then firing up their engine (“Show Targeted Terms”). They then return three lists. Single words, double word combination’s, and triple word combination’s.

This is often more advanced than just pulling their keywords from the meta tags, since these are words that are used correctly from an SEO standpoint as well as potential LSI terms. You can download SEOmoz Term Extractor here.

Method 3: (Keyword Spy)

Both a Free and Paid tool

KeywordSpy is a browser add on that brings some pretty sweet tools to the party. Want to deconstruct their PPC ad campaigns? Want to see a list of keywords they are paying for? How about the keywords they are listed for organically? Want to see the ad’s they are running on the ad networks? It’s all here.
It also has a widget you can add to your blog’s sidebar that will allow you to do keyword research on the fly. Enter a keyword and the widget displays the number of searches done on a series of related keywords. Click a related keyword from the list, and instantly see graphical charts on search volumn, PPC campaigns, additional related keywords to target, average CPC if you were to want an ad campaign for that keyword.

The free version of KeywordSpy limits the number of entries you can see to 15, while the paid version shows them all.

Method 4: Market Samurai

Paid tool, worth its digital weight in gold

As anyone who knows me will testify, I love Market Samurai, and for good reason. This tool should be in every serious Internet Marketers tool box. With Market Samurai, you can get detailed info on keywords, generate a large list to focus on, get ideas for new content, grab public domain content to place on your blog and so much more.
One major piece of the niche marketing arsenal requires you to know what your competitors are doing right, and what they are doing wrong. With the SEO Competition research tool, you can provide a keyword you are trying to compete for, and have Market Samurai tell you why the top 10, are in the top 10. Emulate what they are doing, (Only better) and you can kick them off their spot!

Retrofit Your Elegant Theme With Shortcodes

If you have followed my (excellent) advice, you have purchased Elegant Themes. You have installed one of their beautiful themes on your blog. Perhaps you even did this some time ago. In that case, the theme you have installed might not have the new Shortcodes feature.

What Are Shortcodes?

Shortcodes are cool little “codes” you can insert to add features to your blog without needing to know any coding. You can add little ditties like icon boxes or closeable content areas. A couple of my favorites are the image sliders and info boxes.

The Shortcode is a little snippet of “code” that looks something like this: [box type=”info”]This text is inside the box with an information icon and a colored background[/box]

You can type this in both visual or HTML mode on your post editor since it uses brackets ( [ ] )instead of normal HTML tag angle brackets (<>). They even come with their own “dialog” boxes so you can just run the “wizard”, and it inserts the “code”. In this figure, you can see the additional options added to the visual toolbar in your post editor.

Pretty cool, huh?

How To Add Them To Your Theme

A qualifier first. I haven’t tried to add shortcodes to a non-Elegant Theme. These instructions are for your Elegant Theme that uses the ePanel to setup the theme selections and options.

Step 1: Get the Shortcodes folder setup

Download one of the newer themes such as The Style, Glider or TheProfessional (I used The Professional myself). Extract to your computer so you can see into the folders and locate the shortcodes folder (it’s inside the epanel folder).

Step 2: Give your older theme access to shortcodes

Upload the shortcodes folder to the epanel folder on your domain. Please note, do NOT upload the entire epanel folder or replace the one already there. I tried this with really interesting results. I wound up removing it and starting over with the older ePanel.

Step 3: Tell your older theme it can access the shortcodes

This final step will grant the older theme access to the cool new features available with shortcodes. And although it requires you to edit your theme, please don’t panic. No, really.. don’t panic.

Visit the Dashboard | Appearance | Editor page and select the custom_functions.php file from the right hand list of links. Add these two lines of code to the top of the file (just under the opening PHP tag).

require_once(TEMPLATEPATH . '/epanel/shortcodes/shortcodes.php');

Save your file by clicking the Update File button below the content area. That’s it!

You can now use the dialogs while editing a post, or code a solution directly into the HTML tab. And to help with all the fun things you can do, Nick created a document online that shows how to use them all.

Whoops! Damn A Prescheduled Post

All I can say is … “I’m Sorry”. I screwed up. My blog screwed up. And I am pretty sure my dog screwed up too.

Oh wait… I don’t have a dog. I guess it’s all on me then.

My newsletter subscribers will recognize that when I publish new content to my blog, it get’s sent to them as well. In fact, when I publish a new video on my *I Can Do It Myself* site, that ALSO gets sent to them.

Normally, this isn’t a challenge. Normally, I only post once or twice a week. This week wasn’t normal.

I did a 5 part video over the course of two days, and published to my video blog. It was , one master video of all 5 parts titled “More *Must Load* WordPress Plugins”. I had inserted a new video (on a schedule three days earlier) called “How To Determine Keyword Relevancy”.

And, I am assuming that three posts on my main blog felt lonely, and decided for no reason I can fathom, to republish themselves so they could be sent out over the ether to join their brothers and sisters.

So, if you were one of the few hundred that got FIVE email’s from me in one day (and another the very next day (this message)), then you have my profound apologies. My heart felt contrition and shame. Oh, and my embarrassment.

I’m a geek, and I still can’t figure out why three posts written weeks ago decided to leap off the blog and send themselves out. It’s a mystery to me. If you have ANY experience with this yourself, and you resolved it, I would love to hear from you.

WordPress Theme Installation Video

In this video, I show off a few features from Elegant Themes, one of my favorite theme providers. We will also download, extract and upload to our domain one of the themes we find there. Some of the features of Elegant Themes that I love are the shortcodes and ePanel features. Shortcodes allow you to quickly bring in beautiful buttons or tabs, without coding. The ePanel allows you to turn on or off categories that are displayed in a variety of places.

It’s a short video, but if you are struggling with installing a new theme, then this video will really help.

A friend shared a video with me tonight, and I simply had to stop what I was doing and post it on my blog. This is not my normal type of video, but I think you will love it.

This compilation video is a series of amazing people doing incredible things. It’s set to some very upbeat music (“Mecha Love” by Hadouken) which got my toes tapping and my fingers snapping.

I promise you, you will be holding your breath for a few of these stunts. This video left me breathless! Enjoy.

I came across a video which helped put things into perspective for me. In fact, I shared this video with an older friend, who has consistently complained that the Internet wouldn’t be a big as television or radio. In his defense, he is over 70. I saw this coming back in 1982 and tried to get him on board.

It feels good to be proven right.

I have tried to *teach him* the Internet, web surfing and shopping online. He refused to learn. Now, if you don’t know how to surf and search online, you are going to be left behind. Maybe not today, but real soon.

Now, before you run off thinking I have gone all “Law of Attraction” or “Zen” on you, take a moment. This is a fun video from a group I really enjoy on YouTube called Pomplamoose. They take fun songs, and create a really unique music videos showing every note, every beat and each guitar lick or piano key.

In this video, they did something a little different (for them) and added in some of those “Law of Attraction” style message.

As someone who is suffering a little IM burnout this month, I found new motivation in the message. I am hoping you do as well. And remember… it doesn’t happen overnight, but each day, you must take a single step forward.

After watching the video I realized I haven’t even hit my full stride. In fact, I am still taking baby steps because I am worried someone (Who that someone is I am not sure) will judge me. Sheeesh. Talk about motivation killing.

Keyword Ranking Now More Important

Professional bloggers know the value of a good keyword ranking for the exact keyword their target market is searching for, but it just got much more important to be ranked highly for your search terms.

Google has released Google Instant, a search tool reminiscent of the Quicken style searching introduced when computers were still in their adolescence. As you type, results begin appearing. Type a bit more, the results change to show the “new information”.

Since there is no need to scroll to see additional results, searchers are focusing more on the results that appear at the top of the results page.

So, your keyword rankings are no longer something you can focus on after you got the content just right. You need to focus on your content before you write it, during the process and then you should fine tune anything left undone.

Watch this video from Google about their exciting new Instant Search and then spend a little time getting your ducks in a row. You don’t want to be left behind on this… otherwise, your competition will be the only one your targeted audience will be reading.

Here are a few of the core features in Google Instant:

Dynamic Results – Google dynamically displays relevant search results as you type so you can quickly interact and click through to the web content you need.
Predictions – One of the key technologies in Google Instant is that we predict the rest of your query (in light gray text) before you finish typing. See what you need? Stop typing, look down and find what you’re looking for.
Scroll to search – Scroll through predictions and see results instantly for each as you arrow down.

Though not on everyone’s browser or in every country during the initial release, Google Instant will become the core search experience on Google.com for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE 8. They’ll also be offering Google Instant to their users in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain and the U.K. who are signed in and have Instant-capable browsers. Do You Have The Commitment To Save Yourself?

You don’t need a crystal ball to see what’s coming. The last few years have shown us in stark relief the *state* of the economy. The *bail-outs* being discussed (ad nausium) and implemented are just one indicator. There are others:

Jobs American’s depend on are moving overseas at an unprecedented (and alarming) rate
The Federal Reserve is printing money faster than ever before
The housing market is suffering a catastrophic collapse
The foreclosure rate has reached all time highs
Fuel costs are rising and impacting everything from the cost of bread to Airline flights
The Stock Market is taking hits not unlike what happened in 1929, just days before the *depression* started

People all across America are anxiously watching the debates and listening to what the *politicians* are saying with held breath. In the private area between their ears they are wondering which candidate will save them.

I can answer that one for you. None of them.

You Are The Only One That Has The Power To Save Yourself.

For most of you, that statement has made your blood run cold. Sorry. For others of you, you are asking yourself…. *But how?*

Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki have been saying it for years, and the information has fallen on deaf ears. Network Marketing is a business model that does three things for you. It allows you to leverage:

Other people’s time
Other people’s money
Other people’s products

It takes time, yes. It takes personal effort, yes. It takes new skills, yes. But a business of this type has the power to insulate you from the terrible things going on in the business world. You only have to look at news to see what I am talking about. This was a recent post on the CNN website (Sept 15th, 2008):

The leading U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy and brokerage Merrill Lynch was the subject of a $50 billion buyout by Bank of America. The fate of other big name financial institutions remained in doubt and stock prices plunged in Asia, Europe and the United States.

In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 504 points down, or about 4.4 percent.

The Nasdaq composite lost 3.6 percent, its worst single-session percentage decline since March 24, 2003. It left the tech-fueled average at its lowest point since March 17 of this year.

(Note: On Tuesday, October 29th, 1929, a stock market crash cost the market about 12% of it’s value. A few days before, on the 24th, it lost 6%. Over the next few months, it lost more than 85% of its value)

It’s Not All Bad

Now, I don’t mean to be all *doom and gloom*, but I wanted you to understand where I am coming from. Saving yourself takes commitment. It takes effort. And frankly, it will take some time. You didn’t get into debt overnight and you won’t get out overnight either.

But you can get out. You can save yourself from the upcoming economic upheavals if you will stop expecting others to *save you*, and start doing it yourself.

I am creating a long-term residual income for myself using the proven business model of network marketing. I am doing the work once and reaping the benefits over time. The more I build, the more insulated I am. I am willing to train you. Well, at least a few of you. Since the level of training I provide is so extensive and hands on, I can only take on a few at a time.

Do All Themes Support Excerpts?

QUESTION TO CENAY: if I want a page looking like a blog with “read more” link, or excerpts, how do i make that? Is it possible that not every theme supports this?

I answered with this…
It is possible not every theme supports it, but you can test with a couple of methods. You can also change your blog’s display method in a couple of different ways. I will detail each here.

To Test Your Theme

To test if your theme allows excerpts, first try adding text to the “Excerpt” field located below the post content box on the Add/Edit Post page. It’s a smaller text box, and does allow HTML. After adding your excerpt, save your post again. Review the home page. Does the excerpt appear now?

Second, try adding the “More” tag to the post itself, where you want to the excerpt to break. For themes that do allow excerpts, this will also include the HTML of the excerpt (typically).

To Add Excerpts To Theme

There are more than two ways, but I will outline the two easiest here.

If you just aren’t “into” editing your theme files (It’s not as hard as it sounds), but you want to convert your theme to use excerpts, download a plugin called “Homepage Excerpts” which will allow you to “set” how many posts display a full post and the rest are “converted” to excerpts for you. For example, on blogs that are set to display 10 posts on home page, you can say allow 1 full post. This will display 1 post in it’s entirety, and the other 9 in excerpt form. I recommend allowing 0, so all posts are converted to excerpts.

Edit Theme To Add Excerpts

First, don’t panic. This isn’t that hard.

Second, visit Dashboard | Appearance | Editor and then select the home.php, index.php or other file that your theme uses for the home page. This is probably the hardest part, determining WHICH file your theme uses as the home page. (On simple themes, it is most likely one of the two I just mentioned).

Locate the section that (without quotes), “the_content()”. There may or may not be stuff inside the parenthesis. This tells WordPress to display the post or page content now. This generally follows the title, thumbnail images, etc.

If you replace “the_content()” with “the_excerpt()”, WordPress will ONLY display the excerpt. If it doesn’t find an excerpt (a more tag or a completed “Excerpt” field), it will grab the first 50 characters. You can change this default if you want, but since the More tag is so easy to use, I wouldn’t.

As long as we are talking about Excerpts, I want to chime in here with some reasons for doing this.

Search Engines Prefer Excerpts

Google defines “duplicate content” as the same content, that appears in it’s entirety, more than once on the same domain. Let that sink in a minute.

If you are displaying your whole post on the home page, your whole post on the category page, and your whole post on the actual post page, then Google sees the same article THREE times on your domain. Not good.

Real People Prefer Excerpts

The next reason to use excerpts over content is real people. When someone lands on your home page and you use full posts, they see your first article. Nothing else except your ad’s in the sidebar and your header. They have to SCROLL to see what else you offer. Not good.

Using excerpts allows your visitors to see 3 or 4 short blurbs that might interest them, not just one. And using thumbnail images in the excerpts, gives them “eye candy” to hold them there long enough to interest them.

Can you think of any other reasons to use excerpts over full posts? I would love to hear them!

Retrofitting Your Theme For The New Custom Menu Feature

The new Worpdress 3.0 feature that adds custom menu’s is a great add-on to an already amazing piece of software. Previously, if you wanted specific items to appear in a specific order, you had to add plugins, edit theme files, update exclude lists and basically jump through a bunch of hoops.

No more. Say hello to my little custom menu. Thanks to all the WordPress community developers. You guys really rock.

Unfortunately, if you purchased or installed your theme prior to WordPress 3.0, your theme might not be *custom menu ready*. You have two choices. Go buy/get a new theme that is custom menu ready, or retro-fit your existing theme.

I don’t know about you, but I have dozens and dozens of hours over the last couple of years invested in custom tweaks and feature additions I don’t want to lose. I choose to retro-fit my theme.

WordPress 3.0 Custom Navigation Menu Features

Before I jump into telling you HOW to retro-fit your theme to use this cool new feature, perhaps we should talk about what the cool new feature is. And to understand what the WordPress community has gifted us with, we first need to explain what we had. Pages. Posts. That’s it. And most themes would display one navigation menu for pages, and another for categories of posts (if you were lucky).

If you wanted to have a single page appear in the navigation bar were the posts were displayed, you had to hack the theme. If you wanted to add a menu item to the top menu bar that pointed to another of your sites, you had to hack your theme. Remove 3 pages that you didn’t want displayed to everyone and their dog, hack the theme. Get the idea?

With the new WordPress Navigation Menu system, you now have complete control over your menus. Want three categories, two pages and an external link on your top menu? Just drag and drop exactly those items and save the menu. Done.

Want to show a page within a list of category items on your bottom menu? Drag and drop into the order you want and save. Done.

Get the idea? Forget hacking the theme for something that should be (and now is) easy.

In WordPress 3.0, you’ll have a new screen in your Dashboard area under the Appearance menu. It’s called Menus. (Dashboard | Appearance | Menus) In the screen capture below, I have outlined the four areas you will have more control.

Theme Locations: If your theme supports nav menus, it’ll register new locations for you to add your custom-created menus.
Menus (named): This is where the names of your menus will appear after you’ve created them. (Note that the “+” sign will create a new menu.)
Add Menu Items: There’ll be several meta boxes containing pages, other post types, categories, other taxonomies, and custom links to your menus.
Menu Items: Once you’ve added menu items to your menu, they will appear under the menu for your configuration.

Retro-fit Existing Themes

If your theme was created prior to WordPress 3.0, check for an upgrade. If there isn’t one, you will have to hack your theme one last time to retro-fit it for the custom menus. Grab your editor and let’s go through that.

There are two methods to add a menu. Add a single navigation menu, and add multiple navigation menus. To associate specific menus with locations within our themes, we need to register these locations. Otherwise, we won’t know which menu goes where. There are two functions we can use for this:

register_nav_menu(): Registers a single theme location.
register_nav_menus(): An array of locations we want to register.

A Single Navigation Menu Item

Registering a single menu for a theme (theme location)

In this example, we’ll register a single menu called Primary Menu from our theme’s functions.php file. (To edit this file, visit Dashboard | Appearance | Editor and then select the functions.php file)

Since I answer a LOT of questions there, I thought I would start publishing the questions and answers here so you guys could benefit as well. So, start watching for the category FAQ to get more posts in upcoming weeks, as I re-purpose some of the work I am doing over there…
QUESTION FOR CENAY:  have you heard about this new thing “Instant Blog Subscribers”?  Well, in there you can post a blog and you can do trackbacks to other blogs that you’ve mentioned.  Twice now I have written a post and tried to trackback to my blogs and I get a message that the trackback was refused.  I have both blogs set up to allow pings and trackback so maybe I’m using the wrong link.  I just used my regular link http://NinaNestoroff.com and http://ultimatelistbuildingtips.com/blog/    Is there something else I’m supposed to use in that scenario?    I would appreciate any suggestions.
Also, it allowed me to do pings on weblogs.com, blo.gs and ping-o-matic, but technorait refused it saying I had given an incorrect url but it was the same that went to the others.  http://instantblogsubscribers.com/?w=buildyourlists   Maybe the whole w= thing is unacceptable. Any advice?

Trackbacks and Refusals
First, you need to know that it isn’t YOUR blog settings that are allowing you to trackback to another blog, but rather THEIR settings. Each blog owner has the choice to allow it or not (including you).
On WordPress, they can turn this option on or off at Dashboard | Settings | Discussion. It is the “Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)” in the Default article settings section.
So, now that we understand the OTHER blog owner chooses to allow you to trackback or not, we need to understand a trackback a little better. Each post in their blog (in WordPress), creates a trackback URL, except the home page. So, for example, let’s say I am writing a new blog post about my favorite plugins. During my research for the article I found three other posts (on other blogs) that are similar and list a couple of my favorites. I can add a trackback on MY post, which will notify their blogs about my article. And IF that blog owner allows trackbacks, my notification will trigger a reciporical link. Automatically.

Now, regarding your additional question about the w= part of your URL and Technorati’s refusal of that link, I think the answer is less about the link, and more about the ping service.
Ping Servers Let Search Engines Know You Have New Content
Understand that not every ping server is appropriate for every blog out there. That’s one of the reasons there are so many. And not every ping server allows links with “query strings”, which is what that ?w= part or your URL is called. Spend some time reviewing possible ping servers you can use that match your blog’s genre and specific pinging methods. Don’t know where to find ‘em?

Today’s entry from the mail bag comes from Marquis, regarding a recent video tutorial I did on Headspace2. Marquis writes:
Hello Cenay,
I recently viewed your Headspace2 tutorial video.  This video was by far the most helpful tutorial I’ve come across.  However, I am a novice when it comes to websites and SEO and I had a few additional questions regarding the Headspace2 plugin.
I am launching a sports blog that covers the latest news and headlines, as well as highlights in sports.  Because most of the content will be covering breaking news, SEO is extremely important.
Under the global settings, I have the following tags listed as: sports headlines,sports highlights,sports news
Are these settings proficient? Do I need to add “sports” in the tags as well? 
Also, most of the content in my posts will hardly ever have written content, as it will mostly include video and photos.  Therefore, I will not have many opportunities to implement keywords within the posts.  Although my posts will have keywords in the titles,  will not having keywords within the posts put me at a disadvantage when it comes to SEO?
Any assistance regarding this topic would be greatly appreciated.

I emailed him back, but really felt like this answer might answer some of your questions as well. So forgive me Marquis for not asking permission to republish your question, but I had to share my answer…
Headspace2 And Video Posts: The Answer
Marquis,
The most important question first… by offering videos and NOT having text that the search engines can crawl, YES, you are at a disadvantage. As redundant as it sounds, I would place a “summary” of what the video is about in text form, and make sure you use your primary and secondary keywords within that text.
Also, you should place the keyword in all 9 places the search engines look for it. Here is a post I did detailing all 9 places to add your keyword.
Next, there are things you can do to help get your video posts found. Google created a video and tutorial section on Video Sitemaps which you can access here.
Regarding the global keyword/tags and what you should place on the post for each…
1) The global should be the generic keywords that are applicable to ALL posts.
2) The keywords on the individual posts should include words used within the body of that post content. For example, if the post/video is about the Eagles training camp and a specific player, use BOTH those words in the post and post keywords/tags.
Just remember, you are tagging so people can find your content so you will need to know what words they are searching. A little keyword research (from Google Trends for example), can help you understand how they search and what the hottest topics are.
For more in depth keyword research (something I highly recommend), I strongly advise getting a tool like Market Samurai or Keyword Elite. There is no substitute for knowing how people search for a given subject, and what your competition is doing to land the clicks for those searches.

Most unsuccessful marketers lack one thing, and it’s the one thing that 99% of the successful marketers have in common. Can you guess what it is? Come on, I gave you a hint (in the title).
Thanks right. Follow up.

And you can’t follow up if you don’t capture their name and email address. That part is called *Building a list*. Generally speaking, you offer something of value in exchange for permission to follow up with them. That *offer* is an ethical bribe. And frankly, it needs to be worth their name and email address in today’s world of spammers.
A free ebook they can’t get elsewhere, a newsletter, a 20% discount on a product they will likely want (based on your niche) or something of this nature. It will vary depending on the niche you are in, but not too much.
This Gets You In The Door
A name and email address in exchange for something of value is just your foot in the door, and like all good salesmen, you have to continue to earn their trust and attention. That’s where the follow up comes in. This is your opportunity to build your reputation with them. Build trust. Build a relationship. And don’t be like the other marketers that fail this part of the process by “marketing” too soon.
You aren’t an adviser yet. They don’t know or like you yet. You haven’t earned the right to recommend anything yet. To earn it, you have to continue to send them info/value/product that matches up with their needs. And for this to be successful, your message has to get past their “ad filters” (visual), their “spam filters” (physical) and reach their email inbox.
There Is One Tool You Need In Your Arsenal
Well, okay, to be fair, you really need a few tools, but without the ability to follow up over time, and get those messages past their spam filters, you are just spinning your wheels in this industry.
The tool is rightly called an “Auto Responder“. It’s an automated tool that allows you to custom craft your messages and then assign a time period when to send them. In other words, send message 1, 10 minutes after they sign up. Send message 2, 3 days later. Send message 3 and every future message 7 days later. You get the idea.
Now, you can try to remember all this, you can track your prospects in Excel and you can manually deal with the Internet Service providers that will ban your IP address or domain name (it happens all the time), or you can sign up for a service such as AWeber or iContact, Constant Contact or Get Response.
Using a service (particularly one that forces an opt in confirmation), allows you to focus on your messages, your follow up and not the mechanics.
I know which method I would prefer. How about you? Are you ready to follow up like a pro? Get an autoresponder service account. I prefer AWeber for a variety of reason, but it really doesn’t matter which autoresponder account you go with. Just go with one of them. 
Each has their own merits so you can evaluate based on what you need. Trust me? Then get an AWeber account for a pittance ($19.95 a month) and double or even triple your sales numbers by allowing your prospects to get to know you first, hear from you often and purchase from you when you gain their trust.

This Was A LOT Easier 30 Years Ago

Some of you know me personally. As in come over to my house or speak with me on the phone. For those of you, I have this message… This was SOOOO much easier 30 years ago. 
For those of you not in my immediate circle (don’t you wish you were?), let me explain. 
I just had to move. Suddenly. My daughter just had to move. Suddenly. I managed (with a lot of help from some really good friends) to get the majority of my things packed and moved into the new house. The remainder placed in storage. I am organized after all. My daughter’s move was scheduled the weekend following mine…
…it didn’t go as well. 
Britene got everything packed, we got the u-Haul loaded and drove over to the new house. Ooops. The power company has decided it will not turn on the power (that was just disconnected the day before) because the breaker box is not up to code. 
Time for Plan B.
We unloaded the U-Haul with every single thing Britene owned onto the upper deck of her soon-to-be-husband’s house. The one he has been remodeling. The one under construction. Crap. 
Time to pull out all the stops and get the bottom floor ready for habitation. It just needs the electrical fixtures installed, and the wood floor installed. No problem. 
Now to the part that was so much easier 30 years (and more than a few pounds) ago… construction. Cutting, fitting, bending, lifting, hammering, sawing, and generally doing the handy things I loved doing in my younger days as a trim carpenter. 
I can’t decide if its the weight or the age that hurts worse. Not being able to comfortably do something I love? It’s time to lose weight and get back in shape. 49 isn’t that old, right? 
So, in case you were wondering where my posts are, each night these past two weeks, I am too tired to sit at the computer. In fact, my body aches and cries and whimpers. I have to put it to bed early. I miss you dear reader. I will return soon.

Ask and ye shall receive. I discovered a listing website where radio  talk show hosts are able to troll for guests that match the format of  their show. It only took a few hours of me having listed The Mothership Connection show on WLIP to get deluged with requests for interviews from Bigfoot hunters to a dentist who claims he chats regularly with aliens.
I received 35 emails in about twelve hours, with no end in sight. One after another, I got pitched by authors and publishing houses and  managers all trying to get their clients some air time. I’ll give it to  them too, but not only that I’ll make solid connections I can use for  future reference. I love talking about all these topics and I need to  carve myself a niche.
Having a Sunday night show for four hours isn’t a bad start, but it  isn’t the end all be all either. What I need to do is find a way to  combine my comedy skills with my radio skills, and then create a network  of people who will pay me for both. I think it’s totally possible.
I know what I’m doing on the air, and I know what I’m doing on stage.  I’ve got years of hard earned experience in both areas. Now, the trick  is to create my own unique show that allows me to shine at what I do  best. That doesn’t mean I need to be the main focus all the time, but I  do want to be in the position where I’m driving the bus…or the  Mothership.
I’ve talked about doing this before, but it’s not as easy as just  deciding to and then it’s a done deal. It would take a lot of calculated  changes, and I’m not so sure it’s the right time for that just yet. I  need to still be versatile for at least a little while so I can stay  employed by mainstream bookers. That’s where my work is right now so why  should I put it at risk?
Sending out promotional material to comedy clubs as ‘The King of  Uranus’ could be an unbelievably stupid move, or it could be the most  brilliant marketing tactic of the 2000’s. Personally, without any media  hype I think it would be completely stupid. This has to get attention  before any shows see the light of day, and that’s a lot different than  just comedy.
The whole point of everything is that I’m getting a strong message  it’s time to reinvent myself (or at least part of myself) as The King of  Uranus and let it start growing. It won’t be without lumps and bumps  and wrinkles and glitches, but what isn’t? I need to just get off my  asteroids and DO this project. It’s a calculated crapshoot, but I think  it will work.
I already see it working. People beep and wave and give me a thumbs  up for my Uranus bumper sticker and license plate on my car, and it’s  not even that great a car. It’s a big old tub of rusting Toyota, but I  see smiles light up people’s faces in my mirror each and every day. Kids  get it. Adults get it. Even cops get it. Now I need to just let go and  let it happen.
This is a point at which all entertainers tend to lose confidence.  It’s a whole new way of doing things, and old habits die hard. But, some  entertainers realize that what they’d been doing for years isn’t going  to get any bigger, and the only way to fight it is to reshuffle the deck  and play a new hand. That’s where I am now, but I really don’t know how  exactly.
What I do know is that some ingredients are in place. I have a  gimmick in The King Of Uranus, even though it’s not fully developed. I  also have a radio show with a growing line of strange and unusual people  asking me to be on it. That alone seems to be a major plus.
I really enjoy doing the radio show, because it’s exactly what I want  to be talking about. I’m in charge, and everyone knows it. Like Johnny  Carson though, I encourage everybody to have their moment in the sun,  and I’m secure enough in myself to let it happen. I really want people  to shine, because in the end we all win. That’s what makes a show stand  out.
Coast to Coast AM is the real Mothership as far as shows like this  go, and I’m a big fan. I’m not trying to take over or compete or do  anything like that. I’d love to be a guest on it at some point, maybe  even a fill in host, but that’s about it. Our show is a cross between a  morning show and Coast to Coast AM, and has a different feel. We‘re an  ensemble show.
In a perfect world, we’d be on every night as a warmup act for Coast  to Coast AM and I think it would be a perfect fit. We could be a little  lighter in spirit and prepare listeners to go all the way off when the  big show comes on. I’d love to have comedians on and people like George  Clinton who would be fascinating to talk to on the air. That would be a  kick.
Is there a demand for an every day show like this? I don’t know, and  right now I’m just trying to fill the four hours a week I’ve got with as  many interesting people as I can locate on a shoestring budget. So far  it’s been very good but now I think I’ve hit the mother lode and we can  take it to a whole new level. I’d love to develop a world wide cult  following.
The key is to mix everything together though. I can’t afford to keep  all these projects as individual entities, or I’ll not have enough time  to do any of them. If I’m going to be The King of Uranus, that has to be  both a comedy character and my persona as the host of the radio show.  It also has to be a spokesperson for Uranus Factory Outlet and all that  entails.
That will hopefully involve funny commercials selling funny products  from t-shirts to greeting cards to whoopee cushions to joke items of all  kinds. It will be the 21st Century version of Colonel Sanders, only  instead of selling fried chicken it will be rubber ones.
Colonel Sanders became a walking brand name, logo and spokesman all  rolled into one. He had a killer slogan and a unique look and everything  fell together. He always wore his white suit with a black string tie,  and everyone knew him. What will I wear as the King of Uranus? A cape? A  crown? A cod piece? Who knows? I don’t. Not yet. But I’ll find out.
Part of this is scary as hell, but another part is the most amazing  adventure I could ever think of. Building something out of nothing has  always been of interest, and it still is. I’ve never really had any  major success, but the few things I did do have been very satisfying.
I’m starting to see the big picture in my head with all this. The  radio show will feed the King of Uranus character, which will boldly  find comedy where no man has gone before. Even if this whole thing is a  flaming disaster, I’ll have great stories to tell for many years.

DIY WordPress: What You Need to Know About PHP

WordPress can be considered a dynamic  web application.  What that means depends a little bit on who you  talk to, and what you are using WordPress to achieve. (Look for related  reading at the end of this article.)
What “dynamic web application” means for this article is a web page  resulting from an unholy fusion of HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL.  And  Javascript.  Can’t forget Javascript.
5 different langguages. That’s crazy.  Seriously, it’s crazy.  Back  in the dinosaur days (1990s), it was plenty to master one programming  language per application.*  You could  even spend most of a career just  in one or a few languages.
Anyway, if you’re still with me, you probably know a little bit about  HTML and CSS by now.  It turns out that for WordPress, you don’t need a  lot of Javascript or MySQL for tweaking themes and plugins.  Helpful,  they are, but not necessary.
What you need now is a little PHP, so that’s where we’re going next.
“Why should I care about PHP?”
You continue, despite your better judgement, to read Website  In A Weekend on a regular basis. Which means by hook or by crook,  you’re at least partly in the do-it-yourself camp.  You may not want to camp in DIY, but there you are.  So you should care because if you  don’t, you’re gonna mess something up sooner or later.
Sidenote: If you whitescreen  WordPress, that is, all of sudden, the only thing displayed is a blank  white page, you almost 100% surely have a syntax error in your PHP code,  and that syntax error is almost surely a missing semi-colon “;”.
And it won’t be pleasant.
So that’s why you should care.
WTH is PHP, anyway?
PHP is a recursive acronym, meaning PHP Hypertext Preprocessor.  For  more on recursive acronyms, I suggest Wikipedia.
PHP is a programming language that slides in and around HTML to do a  lot of tedious dirty work so you don’t have to.  PHP code intermingled  with HTML often appears ugly. In programming, something appearing ugly  often is ugly.  One of the weaknesses of PHP is that some of  this ugliness can’t be helped.  It was designed in.
PHP is a module that plugs into your web server that translates  (preprocesses) PHP files into HTML (hypertext).  The PHP interpreter is  different than the web server.  You can run a web server without PHP,  but you can’t serve PHP over the web without a web server.
PHP is all that and more!

From the above, PHP the programming language is what’s of most  concern to you, right here and right now.  The language is what you’re  going to see when you’re poking around in WordPress.  Here’s the basic  concepts.

PHP language syntax. PHP syntax derives from the  family of C like languages.  If you know already know C, you will pick  up PHP pretty quick (but you probably already know that).  If you don’t  know C, no worries, it’s not that important.  The point is, there’s  history and meaning behind PHP syntax.  It didn’t sprout from someone’s  forehead, ex nihilo.Current versions of PHP are “object-oriented.”  But really, PHP is  procedural, object-oriented capability was bolted on, not designed in.
Understand variable scope.  Understanding  variable scope is critical.  If you have programmed before, you may need  to unlearn some assumptions, like global variables not acting how you  think they should.  Variable scope in PHP still trips me up.   If you have little programming experience, you won’t have to unlearn  anything.  That’s a good thing.
PHP paths are critical.  When you write an  application or even tweak a plugin for WordPress, you need to know how  WordPress and PHP find things like files and images you want to deliver  to your readers.  WordPress does a pretty good job of standardizing  paths.  Spend the time to figure that out.
Understand single and double quoting. Single and  double quoting in PHP behave slightly differently, but these small  differences are important.  Sometimes single and double quotes can be  used the same way, other times, they can’t be used the same way.  Most  people develop their own scheme for when and how to use each type of  quoting.
WordPress and PHP APIs are different.  A collection  (library) of functions is called an Application Programming Interface  (API).  When you’re just starting out, it’s critical to figure out the  difference between functions that are part of PHP and functions that are  part of WordPress.

Here’s four functions you absolutely must know for effectively  programming in WordPress.  I suggest either memorizing these functions  (smart) or have their definitions on speed dial (not as good, but it’s  how I do it).

dirname: returns the directory path to the file given  as argument.  This is the directory on the server, not the URL path. PHP  function.
basename: returns just the file name for a given path.   Dual to dirname. PHP function.
add_action: adds a specified function to a WordPress action.  Example: if you want to print your own meta tags into your web page  head element, create a function and use add_action to tell WordPress  where to print the output of your function. See Line 20 in Anchor  Text Plugin.WordPress function.
add_filter: modifies text before printing that text to a  WordPress page.  For example, WordPress uses a filter to automatically  add paragraph breaks to your blog posts.  (Which some people really  hate, but what can you do?).  WordPress function.

As mentioned in a previous post, recently I have started playing with Video SEO, and found it to be a part of SEO I quite like. It’s a very technical trade so far, so apologies for all the code in the article lying in front of you, but there just is no way around it: you’ll need to know about the technical part of these implementations.
Talking about that, it seems as though everyone is focusing on XML Sitemaps, while there’s actually not 1 but 4 methods of getting Google to recognize your video content.
Video SEO consists of 3 parts: indexation, ranking and click through optimization. While I might cover #2 and #3 in a later article, I’m focusing on the technical aspects of Video SEO for this article, and thus on the methods of getting your video’s indexed. I’ll focus mainly on Video SEO for Google, as I haven’t really looked at other search engines so far in testing.
XML Video Sitemaps
There’s several ways to tell Google you’ve got video on your site. The most well known, and probably also easiest, is the XML Video Sitemap. Just like a normal XML Sitemap, this sitemap contains URL’s, and for each URL it contains a video section, outlining all the details about that video, from its location and / or player location to its keywords.

Most of the attributes of a video are optional, but you need either a location or a player, preferably both, and a “poster“ image. We’ll touch on the image later on, but remember to add this for each and every video.

Once you’ve created an XML video sitemap, make sure to submit it to Google through Google’s Webmaster Tools. While you can submit it manually, you can also ping Google with the URL of the sitemap every time you’ve updated it. Pinging Google is very simple, just open the following URL (replacing the sitemap URL with your own, of course):
http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=http://example.com/sitemap.xml
Within Google Webmaster Tools you can also check whether Google understands your sitemap, or if it’s missing any vital components.
MediaRSS
Another way of telling Google that your site carries video, that also uses XML, is by adding MediaRSS tags to your RSS feed, and then submitting your RSS feed to Google as a sitemap.
MediaRSS is a standard conceived by Yahoo!, which Google fully supports for the discovery of all sorts of Rich Media, ranging from images to video. Because it’s an add on to your RSS feed, this has one downside compared to XML video sitemaps: usually it’ll only contain your last 10, 20 or 100 posts, while you might have hundreds of posts and pages containing video. The upside is there too: for a lot of sites, their RSS feed get’s indexed very regularly, allowing for fast inclusion of your video in Google’s index.

Yahoo! Searchmonkey
Yes, I said I’d be focusing on Google, and yes this is the second Yahoo! standard I’ve mentioned. The reason is simple: Google supports it. If you mark up your pages with

Yahoo! Searchmonkey Video tags, Google will, as stated here, recognize these and list your video in the search results.
Other than XML Video Sitemaps and MediaRSS enhancements, Yahoo! Searchmonkey code goes straight into your pages. This has the benefit that Google will recognize your videos without any additional submission of feeds or sitemaps. Depending on how you embed video, this might be fairly easy to add or might take some more work. The reason is that it starts with attributes on the object element, and some JavaScript based injection methods might not have an object element.

Let’s have a look at what it looks like (example stolen from Google’s example page):

          


Most of these aren’t required, and some are even outright not needed at all. There’s only one valid media type: application/x-shockwave-flash.
